Cory's Corner: Aaron Jones Is Perfect For Green Bay

The X-factor sometimes comes in small packages. Aaron Jones is the fulcrum of this offense.

Jordan Love has played surprisingly well this season.

So well in fact, that Love has a real argument to be named as a Pro Bowler.

But if the Packers are going to keep this unbelievable season going, it’s up to Aaron Jones.

He’s the guy that the Packers drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-9 versatile dynamo has carved out an amazing role. Many didn’t like the pick back then, but Jones has proven that he not only belongs, but he’s one of the most important weapons in the game.

In the last three games, Jones has tallied three 100-yard contests. He suffered through hamstring and knee injuries before finally getting healthy and being able to be his jitterbug self.

“His presence alone just uplifts everybody,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur. “Certainly, we know the type of player he is, how explosive he is and what it’s meant to this team for years. It’s everything he does, not only on the field, but off the field, as well.”

LaFleur is right. The sombrero wearing running back is not only an excellent back that can catch and run with excellent precision, but he’s also a tremendous leader that puts himself before the team. His restructure saved the Packers $11.8 million. That’s an amazing story in itself because his position isn’t in a position to help out their fellow teams. Running backs have been struggling to grasp what their role is, but versatility has been the vital key.

Jones, 29, can run, catch and block. But The 5-9, 208-pound running back packs a punch by being fifth in the league with 2.2 yards after contact per attempt. He has 11 broken tackles, which is more than Bengals running back Joe Mixon’s 10.

The NFL has never been more of a pass-happy league and it’s never been a better time to move on from an undersized back. However, Jones is different. His slide cuts are some of the quickest in the game and he is automatically respected by his offensive line.

Jones is also important for another reason: he keeps Dak Prescott and the high-flying Cowboys offense off the field. The Cowboys have been a different team this season by averaging 37 points a game at Jerry World.

In the playoffs, you have to be able to run the football. You have to grind out tough yards and that’s exactly what Jones gives you. He can run between the tackles for four tough yards or he can put his foot in the ground and make an impressive move to get to the pylon.

I don’t think the Packers can win a shootout vs. the Cowboys at home. And the best way to avoid that is by having a running back that takes pressure off the passing game and the pass protection.

The Packers have been making great strides in the last month, but that’s because they have one concentrated dose of amazing at running back. Jones has been and is the fulcrum of this offense and will be the reason why Green Bay moves on.

I assume you meant "I don’t think the Packers can win a shootout vs. the Cowboys" not a "shutout."

Jones is one of my favorite Packers, ever, and I was much more excited by the selections of Williams and Dillon at the time, though I don't know why you think "Many didn’t like the pick back then." He was pretty much an afterthought, not a dislike.

Aaron Jones alone has revitalized my kids' interest and investment in the fortunes of the Packers post the other Aaron era.

My youngest calls him, "Mr. Electric", and says he makes watching the Packers fun again. The other two aren't as focused on Jones, they love Love, but they all say the Packers are an easier team to get behind because it isn't all about Aaron Rodgers anymore, it's about the team.

I'm thankful for this iteration of the Packers. They've forged a new, more fun identity for this team, and they've removed the clouds that came with the stink eyes, the gesticulations, the hissy fits, and the aloofness that had become the hallmarks of this team and its so-called leader.

They don't have to win to be enjoyable, they just have to be themselves because they've made Packers football fun again.

Some of us don't want to dump on our history. Savage's post was excellent. It's a shame he didn't stick with the positives. It was enough for me to celebrate Jordan Love and the next generation of the Green Bay Packers.

Time to move on from the "Aaron Rodgers is a dickhead posts". What's the point? It truly serves no purpose. We get it. Many in here don't like him. People need to move on, it's over.

Upvotes be damned, thank Aaron Rodgers for all he did for this organization, including being a very positive influence on Jordan Love. Celebrate the future of this team we all love. The villain is gone, find a new villain.

That's why I gave him a thumbs down.

All you Rodgers haters? I don't get it. Like you didn't enjoy 2010, or even the last two trips to the Championship game. Hissy fits? Really? So I assume you dislike Brady, as well?

I will never understand the vitriol towards this guy. By all accounts, inside the locker room, Aaron was and still is a well respected leader.

Haters gotta hate.

Aaron Jones is 5'9". He is also going to have a salary cap hit of a bit over $17 million next year, and will turn the dreaded 30, a virtual death knell for running backs. On the other hand, Jones was not used very much for the first couple of years under McCarthy. Then again, his injuries seem to be getting worse, with more time missed. Does he have another good season in him, or several good seasons? Do the Packers let both Jones and Dillon go and hope they can find replacements in the draft? Cut Jones and keep Dillon and draft a replacement for Jones? Well, none of this matters until after the Packers season is done, which hopefully won't be for a few more weeks.

Jones has proven he's enough of a difference maker to this offense you roll the dice with him and take the prudent risk with him being productive for a couple more seasons.

Ricky,
Its hard to argue with anything you're saying, but I see such a "Packer" that I think just his presence makes this team better, particularly the offense.
I know the proverbial 'Age' thing is just around the corner, and he wasn't used a lot in his early years, but I also remember Raheem Mostert as a 49er which was similar, and at 31 he's had one of his best seasons.
I understand the cap hit, and the Packers are not in a good position but can Jones really be replaced with everything he brings to the team? Its hard to argue the improvement in the O-line since he returned a few weeks ago, and again I think the young receivers follow his 'team player' lead.
I'm hoping we can keep him, with a fast improving offense and hopefully a solid defense next year, the sky could be the limit!

Gutey lost out on Taylor.
We know change is coming to the RB position.
Jones represents "packer Pride" more than any player.
Jones value to the packers
is beyond any logical reasoning.

It's not age it's usage. The Mendoza line is 1600 carries and Jones is at 1177. I doubt there's many good RBs in the history of the NFL that had that few carries at age 29, if any. Jones should give MM a thank you card with a hundy in it as thanks for still making solid money in the NFL.

Also not sure why being 5'-9" is a drawback for a RB. But I guess Barry Sanders was considered too small too, even though he was a solid 205 lbs. But you could be right, Frank Gore was only 5'-9" too and we all know he didn't last long.

Actually I’d like to keep him as a FB hybrid. Whether he will come at a price we can live with is a fair question, but he’s actually better in that role than Deguara or any TE we have. He’s just not a number one back except in foul weather.

Cory,
You absolutely nailed it. thank you!
Jones is the consummate Packer in so many ways, from his work on the field and off with his work with kids and his charities.
His Green and Gold sombrero accompanied by that huge smile is a bright spot every time we see them and his 'Team' attitude is a refreshing contrast to that exhibited by the 'other' Aaron who is now part of the Jets.
Jones was willing to re-do his deal to stay in Green Bay, help the team, and hopefully management is fully aware of what he means to this team.
He was instrumental in helping Jordan Love to organize and was a big part off-season work outs that took place last summer, and has shown constant support for Love right from the start. He's not only a Packer, but a Packer fan, and a Packer ambassador, a very good one. Its only fitting that from what we often see on the sidelines during games is that this young team looks up to him and views him as a team leader. At the so-called offensive skill positions he's the grizzled veteran, and it shows. After seeing him talking with teammates on the sidelines during breaks, he takes the field and walks the walk, and I believe he plays a big part in the success and improvement of our young receivers group. He's a Pro"s Pro.
Management needs to find a way to keep him in GB, he's kinda' the latest version of Favre and/or Rodgers, and now that the team is on the rise he has earned and deserves a shot at the Title!

I feel like we'll probably see the return of Jones AND Dillon PLUS the drafting of at least two RBs. I think they'll find some way to make it work. We don't have to worry about a Jones injury if there is a cheap, good rookie backing him up.

p.s. I like Trey Benson, Blake Corum, Will Shipley, and Audric Estime as Packer RB Prospects.

Running, blocking, receiving....he fits the mold of a running back in MLF's system. He can act like another wide receiver at times...which is important in the scheme. And yes.....without dwelling on it too much, Savage57 absolutely hit the nail on the head...and recent events have confirmed it.

Fulcrum is a good description for Jones, Corey. Well done. Not aware of any athlete being nicknamed "The Fulcrum", but it would be a good moniker.

LH, when you led your sentence with the word "Fulcrum", it immediately made me think back to ancient history and Archimedes who was a Greek mathematician and physicist. He used the word "Fulcrum" in one of his quotes which was:

"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world." Now, I don't know if Jones can move the world as Archimedes penned, but he sure can help move the Packers.

Well said Cory, great points. I’m confident in saying if the play calling and run blocking are on par with what we’ve seen these last three games (sequential ‘set up’ play calls with misdirection, motion and play action to put the defense on its heals) and if Jones can exploit gaps in the wide zone looks and tosses to the outside with a few of his signature cutbacks inside to soften the belly of the D line…we’re going to be in this game all the way and quite possibly dictate the flow of the game (vital on the road) and dominate TOP, keeping Dak and his weapons off the field and our defense fresh. Jones, Love, the O-line and the entire offense are peaking at the right time and this entire team has a solid, quietly confident yet ‘perceived underdogs’ vibe about them. I believe Jones is going to have yet another signature game in Dallas, not a four TD effort like ‘19, but it will be more than enough to keep Dallas’ D off balance and give our QB10 plenty of clean pockets and looks to distribute the ball to the open target (refreshing to say that!) on all three levels. Of course, the defense has to hold up, but if MLF calls another excellent game and the offense executes…Barry’s defensive concepts are tailored for playing complimentary ‘bend but don’t break’ with a lead and a cushion. If I’m Joe Barry, and my contract expires at seasons end, I KNOW I’m out after our next loss—I’m gonna do whatever is asked and put my players in the best position (i.e. NO ILB covering WR’s!) to succeed by emphasizing their strengths (press-man) out on the field in the spotlight and have something to hang my hat on for my next job as ILB coach somewhere else because this game is my audition and interview. That’s his reality, and I think he’ll actually call a decent game for the second consecutive week. This team right now just gives me good vibes, I believe they are fired up for this and will play loose, relaxed and very well. It’s all house money right now, they’re all in, so are we. Game on, Dak and Big Mike…I believe the pressure is on you!

I think 100% of us fans on here love AJ and want him back. It is all going to depend on the new contract restructure and if he takes another pay cut. AJ is a proven game changer for the Packers, and we really need him back, but at the right dollars. I hope it can be worked out as well as Dillon resigning a lower prove it contract. I think Dillon will get better offers elsewhere. The reality is the salary cap works in the NFL and you can't keep everyone. Too bad MLB isn't the same.

The best Aaron Jones clone I see in this draft is Marshawn Lloyd-USC. 5'9 210 lbs. and runs 4.4s. Same speed and size and he has great hands like Jones. He had 13 catches last year for almost 20 YPC. Probably an early 3rd rounder. Looks like he could be a great replacement for Jones regardless of the contract situation. Check his video highlights.

Another early round RB I like because he is a combo of our 2 RBs is Braelon Allen-Wisc. 6'2 225lbs and runs 4.4s. Catches well and he is only 21 years old. Probably will take a 2nd round pick to get him.

Later round guys I like are Ray Davis-Kentucky, 5'10 220lbs, and runs & catches really well. He had 21 total TDs for Kentucky this year. 4th or 5th rounder?
Isaiah Davis-S Dakota St, National Champs best RB. Big and fast like Braelon Allen. 6th round?

I hope Jones stays. At the very least Jones will be worth as much as the Bills gave us for that CB we traded them. Think how strong the trade interest would be if a team could redo his contract for $5 to $7 mill per year. Too bad losing Bahk won't be in a demand as well. Waited too long.

I guess what I meant is he needs to sign a lower dollar contract to stay in GB. They won't pay him $2 or $3 mill a year. I actually like him as a complimentary RB. He runs hard and can catch very well too. I hope we can keep him.

Most people didn't know anything about Jones, Baloney. It looked like GB said lets draft 3 RBs and see what happens. It's probably one of the best late round picks ever in the NFL. Maybe we can duplicate it with Rasheed Walker as I think he went in same round or later.

I like Marshawn Lloyd as well Baloney. He is a complete back and very much similar to Jones. He really catches the ball well. Only 13 catches in 2023 but @ almost 20 YPC. He can make tacklers look stupid. Even if we are lucky enough to resign Jones, we need to pick for the future. Draftek had him going in the 6th in their latest mock. He won't last that long. Probably late 3rd or early 4th.

Ray Davis is another later back who could help us. Similar skills to Jones and Lloyd, but bigger @ 5'11 220lbs. He had 21 TDs this year for Kentucky against SEC competition. Probably a 5th or 6th to get him.
