Packers Team Bond Is Strong

Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Mike Daniels recently hosted several teammates on the defense to a nice dinner.  It's not unusual for teammates to befriend one another and spend time together off the clock.  We also see position groups get together to bond when they're together for team activities.

But this recent gathering had a different air.  I wasn't there and I don't know what was said, but it just seems like this year's team has a stronger sense of what they can accomplish than I've seen in quite some time.

The embracing of his role as a leader by Daniels and the comeuppance of safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, for one, seem to indicate that there is a stronger veteran presence in the Packers locker room.  Already established are the obvious: Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, Clay Matthews, Morgan Burnett, and Randall Cobb.  Recently added veterans Martellus Bennett, Lance Kendricks and Ricky Jean Francois seem poised to add their presence to that list.

Since the days of Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, Greg Jennings, Ryan Pickett and Cullen Jenkins, the Packers seem to have been searching for the return of that type of leadership presence.

Fans have been wanting it even more, it seems.  Anywhere that fan comments are found, Packers fans have been calling for more veterans and (some) tossing darts at pictures of general manager Ted Thompson for his constant lack of involvement in infusing more veteran talent on his team.  The constant revolving door of young hopefuls left the Packers constantly trying to replace both talent and presence.

In looking at many of the recent Super Bowl champions, there is the common thread of strong veteran presence both on and off the field.

2012's Baltimore Ravens was led by Ray Lewis, one of the most vocal leaders the NFL has seen.  2013 was the year of the Seattle Seahawks and the Legion of Boom, along with a defense that terrorized opponents all the way to the Lombardi trophy.  The New England Patriots are. . the New England Patriots.  Their leadership and moxie comes from the top with Bill Belichick and trickles down through Tom Brady and whoever else is on the roster.  2015 champions, the Denver Broncos?  Peyton Manning, Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, Emmanuel Sanders.

Talent can't be ignored in the formula to create a championship team but leadership and a tight bond between teammates have to be part of it.  A strong and common purpose is so very key and it seems that this year's Packers team has an elevated sense of that goal.

Will it be enough to get this team over the hump and back to a Super Bowl?  Many other things typically need to happen to reach that pinnacle, such as health and a little luck.  But beyond the talent, of which the Packers have a good amount, the 2017 team looks to bring more of the intangibles that have historically been present in champions.  The most imporant, a strong bond.

I think Bennett will be excellent in the locker room, same with Jahri Evans. Both have won a SB's and both have done and been through just about anything in their time in the NFL. Call me foolish but guys like Bennett and Evans, guys who have been there and done that, bring more to the locker room than say Bostick and Newhouse?
We could still use another on defense, someone to really step up alongside Daniels.

NP: Bostick and Newhouse, LOL. I think Francois may fit that "older veteran" presence. Just got to believe Guion has run out of nine lives and will be gone, maybe before his suspension ends. Interesting 2nd year guy to watch is the youngster at NT; MM has said that Kenny Clark "is crushing it" in the weight room. He was really coming on at the end of last year.

I was going for the youngster vs the veteran... I could have come up with a better example than Newhouse but Bostick was right on the money.

Bostick...Young, UDFA, small school, cheap vs say maybe a player like Owen Daniels who the Packers had in for a tryout that summer. I understand the value of players like Bostick and even the need. Obviously with the salary cap they all can't cost millions. But the Packers didn't have anyone at TE in 2014 like Daniels, Bennett, Kendricks, or Cook, not even close.

Blake Martinez could be another guy like that eventually. Great attitude, prepares with intensity, wore the defensive headset as a rookie. Is 2017 too soon?

Daniel's crap is forced, which is why it sells with the fans and the media, but why Packers players are like 'just Mike being Mike'. I'd rather see him make a play once in a while.

One thing I've learned in life is that a real, bona fide bad-ass never runs around telling people how much of one he is.

We agree on the last part and as far as I know, Daniels hasn't been tooting his own horn. He is confident, but that shouldn't be construed as self-promotion or being arrogant.

As far as his making a play once in a while, you are in luck! Just watch most any game he's in over the past 5 seasons. Plenty to be found and the Packers have to have agreed based on the extension they gave him a year ago.

No one wants to hear it, but the reason the Packers haven't been to the SB again is LOFT (lack of freaking talent). Sometimes you can have a great offense and make some noise, but if you don't have the defense to make key stops then its noise.

TT's two best moves this year, IMHO, have been to bring in House and Bennett. He has a good young secondary, but no depth. House can make a difference there.MM wants to make the middle of the field his sandbox. With the TEs he has on the roster, that can be a reality. He even has depth with RR being the number 3 guy.
The team bond is important, but w/o the horses to make it happen it's just noise.
Savage 57 is right....a real bad-ass doesn't say he's one, he just is one.

So Daniels hosted a dinner and you weren't there but it had a "different air"? Anything else you don't have any information about you'd like to characterize?

From everything I've read and heard, they'll miss Peppers' leadership in the locker room. But even more important is for them to replace his, and Datone's production rushing the passer. I'm hoping another vet is added for that purpose.

It's all speculation and hype at this point. The team bonding is important and a good step but it needs to play out the field. It's easy to feel good now when nothing is at stake. Will it be there when it's needed in the playoffs? Only time will tell. In the meantime show up and make plays, especially when it matters. That's how you earn leadership, not by taking about it.
Thanks, Since '61

'9ers are desperate. He won't make through a full season. As for defensive talent and leadership on this team, I think they are improved this year. Not gonna miss Jones' 1 pressure per game, or Peppers' cavalier attitude about losing.
