Reactions to Packers' Tuesday Activity

Reacting to Eddie Lacy and Davon House.

Today was a reminder that there are facts and behind-the-scenes analysis that we are not privy to as fans.

I went on and on about how the Packers should bring back Eddie Lacy just a few weeks ago. In my defense, that was not a prediction but an opinion.

When I saw Bob McGinn's Tweet on Tuesday that related to Eddie Lacy's recent weight, my jaw smooshed the rest of my sandwich.

There goes everything I hoped would be true about Eddie Lacy. If he really weighed in at that level, and I don't consider Bob McGinn to be a TMZ journalist, then I say good riddance.

I had no idea, and none of us could have known, that was Lacy's status. Whether it's injury or some other issue that has him weighing that much, I think the Packers are lucky to see him go.

This obviously makes running back a crucial area of need for the Packers and we'll have to wait and see who they go with in the draft and in the race for undrafted rookies, but I have a lot of confidence in Ty Montgomery and surely they will add another legitimate threat at the position.

When it comes to Davon House, I'm not arguing that he is a significant upgrade, but I am very glad they brought him back.

He brings experience. If these younger players can develop into something, House eases that growth period.

House will also be accompanied by rookies through the draft. I know this was the line last year, but if the Packers' corners from last year can begin to improve, adding House with some more top-level talent through the draft should lead to strength at the corner position.

Overall, I do wish the Packers had gone with a cornerback of a higher caliber and invested money at a crucial position. At the time of this post, Malcolm Butler was visiting or on his way to visit with the New Orleans Saints. But, when it comes to this team and its history in free agency, I'm glad they didn't completely sit on their hands at cornerback.

Zachary Jacobson has already gotten the ball rolling on the Eddie Lacy signing. What do our great CheeseheadTV commenters feel about Davon House?

House helps bring experience to a young secondary. We should have gotten Lacy at a one year prove it deal , he was fun to watch when healthy running over people especially Viking defensive backs.

Look at how many tackles Jayrone had last year in less than half the snaps Datone recieved. Datone was a bust, despite the homers best attempts to sugar coat it.

I'm very disappointed with them letting Lacy go. I know I'm in the minority, but he gained the weight back because HE CAN'T RUN BECAUSE OF HIS ANKLE SURGERY. Not because he's fat, dumb and stupid. I'm tired of people painting him that way.

The RB position has been consistently mismanaged and today was another step backward. We all saw the lack of depth at the position last season with frantic signings of Knile Davis and Christine Michael.

So last year, Ted rewards James Starks with a 2 year deal, who's NEVER had a 1,000 yard season, but we kick Lacy to the curb, who's had two thousand yard seasons and was averaging 5.1 yards per carry last season until he got hurt.

What did we have to lose by signing Lacy to a 1 year prove it deal laden with incentives? Montgomery has sickle cell and we have no one behind him.

The 2013 draft class looks like a disaster now. If this is a draft and develop franchise, then we're doing a crappy job of retaining anybody we DO draft.

Uh, Eddie Lacy is fat. Very fat. When asked about his hobbies he cites playing Call of Duty. Butter Burger Eddie is fat and will always be fat and injured. No wonder he slipped to the 2nd round.

"When asked about his hobbies he cites playing Call of Duty."

There was a recent piece written (and I can't remember where I saw it) in which players were asked what their favorite pasttimes were, and a majority play video games. As someone who works with college-age kids, I'm not surprised.

Dobber: Players can do whatever they like in their free time. Nobody was complaining when he had back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. We'll give the injury prone James Starks a 2 year deal, who's never done much except be a nice complementary back.

Pointer Packer: To be fair, he can't run right now. Secondly, he lost the weight last season and was running well. I guess 5.1 YPC doesn't mean anything to you?

He's the best RB we've had since Ahman Green. I know he was overweight in 2015, but he owned that and got back into shape. I've always viewed him as a Jerome Bettis-type of running back. He's just a big guy.

And he sure as hell wasn't as injured as Bettis was. Remember, people thought Bettis was washed up with the Rams, then he went to the Steelers and reinvented himself.

I'm on the fence with Lacy. Sure he had 5.1 YPC. He also only averaged 22.5 YPG over the course of the season because he was hurt...again...and that matters.

In a draft full of quality RBs, I'm OK with letting him go.

Nice try. Trent Richardson didn't even crack 1,000 yards in either of his first two seasons in Cleveland. In fact, he only had 950 yards his rookie year and then 105 in his second year. Lacy had more yards in his rookie year than Richardson did combined in his first two seasons in Cleveland.

Lacy was named the Offensive Rookie of Year. That was the first time since 1971 that a Packer player had earned that honor. So we had to wait 42 years for this to happen. May never see it again in our lifetime.

Last but not least, Richardson NEVER ran for 1,000 yards with ANY team he played on. Just because they both went to Alabama is a hollow comparison.

Datone to the Vikes means that unless Kyler Fackrell is looking like a beast this off-season the Packers need to roll up their sleeves and find another OLB...not going to find enough help to replace Jones and Peppers on the field for 2017 in the draft alone.

I think I know who we all (well, OK, most of us) hope that will be.

Pretty slim pickens after Barwin...kind of rough losing Peppers and Jones but reality says that's the price of perry. Gotta get something now, there's Dumervil... Freeney.....both good fits but getting up there in age, I wouldn't mind bringing in Dumervil I guess...a battered DeAndre Levy, could try talking to Chad Greenway..these are not your guys but they could be veteran leaders, something that it looks like Clay doesn't bring to the table.

Are there a bunch of really good qb's in next year's (2018) draft?

Feels like the Packers are trying to acquire as many compensatory picks as possible. Use them (along with Hundley) to trade up and draft Rodgers' successor.

It can't be Hundley. He'll be gone before Aaron's done.
But a 2018 rookie would have two seasons to watch/learn while Rodgers finishes his current contract.

Bold...bold move for Ted to pull walking out like that. But not impossible. I dont know about next years draft. If he were doing this in this year's draft I'm not sure he would need to give up all that much because I see Josh Dobbs as a huge value pick in the middle of the draft with a ton of upside with his intelligence. He could just use one of his picks to get him.

No way. Jones might beast out in a 43. He was a bad pick for a 34 team. Lacy was a good pick who couldn't control himself. Bakh makes the class. JC was a good Center with injury issues. He still might beast. Oh what could have been with Franklin. Hyde was a GREAT 5th round pick. Johnson and Barrington both looked promising, but flamed out.

That's a pretty ok to good class. Just didn't work out in our favor unfortunately.

1. Datone Jones, DE, UCLA
2. Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
4a. David Bakhtiari, T, Colorado
4b. J.C. Tretter, T, Cornell
4c. Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
5a. Micah Hyde, CB, Iowa
5b. Josh Boyd, DE, Mississippi State
6. Nate Palmer, LB, Illinois State
7a. Charles Johnson, WR, Grand Valley State
7b. Kevin Dorsey, WR, Maryland
7c. Sam Barrington, LB, South Florida

Depends on how you measure success. If drafting and developing is the foundation of the franchise and we only keep 1 out 11 players after their rookie contract, that does not spell success to me. That spells failure.

Bakhtiari, Hyde and Lacy were the only impact players that emerged. The rest of them showed flashes, but never lived up to their potential. Why the hell would we draft Datone Jones and then force him to play in a 3-4? I don't get it. He'll do better with Minnesota in 4-3, but also because opponents will be focusing on blocking his more talented teammates, opening up things for him.

Packers have gone from elite to pretty good to good. Not sure what they are right now, but it feels like they're still sliding.

The roster has been lacking for a while (sans Rodgers).
I understand letting average players walk.
But not bringing anyone in to upgrade is troubling.

They're done signing guys (of consequence).
The only additions are going to be rookies of various shapes and sizes.
Other than Clark, Lowry, and maybe Martinez there aren't any young defensive players who show any promise.

And now the run game is gone (regression on the oline and at rb).

Nothing's gonna change by June.

I disagree on all fronts.

A lot will change before June rolls around, not even including the draft. I don't think they are done. Players will get cut to open up cap space and a number of other reasons. More so after the draft, some before I'm sure. We aren't even 2 weeks I to free agency. Johnathan Hankins would be a good sign, still an option. Oderick, teams are clearly not appealing to Barwin the way he expected that speaks some sort of volume. Patience. Options are out there and more will arise.

If you don't see any promise in randall rollins or gunter, well I don't know what to tell you because they just gained experience at the second most difficult position in the game in the most challenging and influential way possible. Being thrown in the fire.

I still don't see Lacy panning out at 5.5M production. He's going to split time with Rawls and Prosise who is going to be featured on third downs in particular. As for him remaining in GB, as productive as he was even at his weight (would have been more productive at a lighter weight, don't you think?) He is only of value to any team when he's healthy. Even if he's only 255 or 260 lbs that's still too much for a running back.

Also, stop comparing him to Jerome Bettis because he was one of the hardest workers and most dedicated players at his position. Lacy clearly isn't. The comparison just, isn't there....

No - the Packers do not suck (thank you Aaron Rodgers) but they are also not getting any better. The roster has progressively regressed over the last 4 years or so. It's at a point where fans are upset when bad/average players don't get resigned - because they know they players behind them are even less likely to help the team reach the Super Bowl.

Akeem - think of it this way.
No super Bowls with Lacy
No super Bowls with D. Jones
No Super Bowls with Hyde
No Super Bowls with Cook

Point is we didn't win any with them we can continue to not win the SB without them. But we now have a chance to replace them with better players and maybe make the difference to get to the big game.

As for Lang, I would have preferred to keep him, but realistically his best seasons are behind him. Maybe he has one good year left in him but TT wasn't going to pay $9 mil plus for maybe another season and a half or so.
TT actually did Lang a favor by letting the Lions overpay him. He actually did Lacy the same favor because if Lacy is 267 lbs as reported his playing days are done shortly. Remember, Lacy has 3 1/2 seasons on him as an RB and now with a bad ankle and 2 concussions. He'll get hit even more playing at 260+ and RBs have only so many hits in them.

We'll replace Lacy, D. Jones, Tretter and Hyde with better players. We've already replaced Cook with better TEs and House is an improvement over Hyde for speed alone. This is a process that isn't set until Week 1 of the season. Long way to go with more changes to come. Give it a chance. Thanks, Since '61

Ryan Graham: So you say Lacy and Bettis share nothing in common? You're basing that on ONE season of him being overweight and then extrapolating that over his entire career. How is that fair?

If anything, Lacy doing P90X and getting into shape for 2016 showed:
1) That he could lose the weight.
2) That he took responsibility.
3) He had the work ethic to do it.

Here's why they are similar:
1. SIZE. Bettis was 5'11" 255 lbs. and sometimes played a tad heavier. Lacy is a big guy himself at 5'11" 250-260 lbs.

2. PERFORMANCE. Like Lacy, Bettis's first two years were back-to-back thousand yard seasons. In his 3rd season with the Rams, he only had 637 yards, averaging 3.5 yards per carry, in part due to the Rams going more pass heavy.

3. CRITICISMS. People also claimed he was washed up and too heavy. In fact, the Rams asked him to play fullback and he refused.

Look, I'm not crowning Eddie Lacy has a Hall of Famer. But to say there are no similarities between him and Jerome Bettis is simply inaccurate. Bettis redefined the role for big backs. There IS a place for them as feature backs in the NFL.

Now they have to do exactly that, simply to fill the roster.
BPA is not an option.
They HAVE to pick a RB, IOL, OLB, CB.

Not signing Lang leaves the door open for someone else. TT actually gave up on a 1st round pick (d jones), hard to believe. Doesn't feel like the same ol Ted.

I'm actually happy to see that- sometimes I think he gets too attached to his people and overpays. Good to see him cut bait and admit he missed on a 1st.

4th - As long as Lang is replaced by anyone besides Barclay I'm OK with it.
As for Jones it would be almost impossible to find a replacement who is not better than him. We have a chance to improve the team with most of these guys gone (Lacy, D. Jones, Hyde, Tretter), let's hope that TT doesn't muck it up. Thanks, Since '61

Sabotage? You're an extreme homer on drugs. Seaturds just overpaid for a chronically injured fat ass. Dude won't play 10 games this year.

Absolutely agree Point. Unless of course the Seaturds dangle hamburgers from their goal posts during the game. Thanks, Since '61

Hard to add to what's already been said...time to move on and focus. Let's look at need areas, and how the team might address them. I'll list my order of inportance. Feel free to disagree and offer your own analysis.

1) CB
2) OLB/DE
3) RB
4A) OL
4B) DT
5) S
6) WR
7) DB

I think all the needs are addressed, it's tough to say what order they are gonna be picked because we don't know what will be available when until draft day.

I don't think Datone Jones was a bust. He did what they asked him too. His 1 game suspension sucked. And this is just another bad move by TT. If you sign Perry he should of signed D.Jones. And it just goes to show you that the entire defense coaching staff should be replaced. Datone will eat up the league. And he will get a bigger contract. His place was at DE. I said fire moss. With all the draft choices TT gave him. He is the reason they don't succeed. Moss You suck! Capers Sucks and Trvac needs to go before he wrecks Clark. Good Luck Jones. Perry will join you sooner than people believe. Just a great Bargain for the Vikings.

Need to get to June at least before assessing TT's moves. I usually assess after TC and before the season's opening game so I know who is still on the team and healthy and who is actually going to play in the real games. On the plus side we've improved TE dramatically and we've improved our CBs very slightly. With Lacy gone we can draft fresh legs with a player who is more interested in playing than eating and thereby improve our RB position. Losing Tretter and Lang from the OL is a concern but Tretter is often injured and Lang's best days are behind him. He may have one more good season left but not likely much beyond that. IMO losing Datone Jones immediately improves our OLB position. He was either hurt or just awful when he was on the field. A poor #1 pick by TT. This also tells me that TT may be working on a deal to sign another OLB. Given the list of players that TT has not re-signed tells me that the Packers are making a serious attempt to add speed, versatility and hopefully some toughness to the roster. Bennett and Kendricks can both block, they bring speed and more toughness than either J. Cook or R. Rodgers. When healthy Perry plays very physically. House adds speed at least to our CB group. TT still has cap money even after signing House and accounting for the draft. He may be going for Barwin or a DL. Then we'll see what type of players he drafts and maybe we'll get a better idea of the direction the Packers are taking. For certain, adding speed, toughness and some nasty attitude to our defense couldn't hurt. I would have preferred to keep Lang, especially after the loss of Tretter but the other guys who were let go won't be missed. We have a good chance to improve the team at every one of their positions. Keep chopping out the dead wood TT. Thanks, Since '61

While there is some validity to "chopping the dead wood," we have lost any nastiness we had on the offensive line, now that Sitton and Lang are gone.

Eddie may very well do OK in Seattle. He'll have to stay healthy but it may be easier in Seattle than GB. --- Seattle is better at handling players than GB. --- That's always been the Pack's obvious problem --- no good veterans to set the example.

Now GB has no "real" RB. --- Monty is not the answer.

I pretty much agree with Since '61. I'm actually happy that TT had the fortitude to let his 1st-rounder Jones go. TT has a history of hanging on to past mistakes. And as for Lang and Lacy and Hyde, I don't see those losses as being detrimental to our season, while hoping that TT uses this new found money to help our defense.
