REPORT: Packers WR Geronimo Allison Suspended

The second-year wide receiver will be watching the first game of the regular season from the sidelines.

Add Geronimo Allison to the short list of players who will start the 2017 regular season on the Packers' suspension list.

It was reported Wednesday afternoon by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the Packers' second-year wide receiver will be suspended for the first game of the season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

A statement released by an NFL spokesperson said the following:

"Geronimo Allison of the Green Bay Packers has been suspended without pay for the first game of the regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Allison will be eligible to return to the Packers' active roster on Monday, September 11 following the team's September 10 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Allison is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games."

This comes after Allison settled a misdemeanor charge for being in possession of marijuana in September. As originally reported at the time by Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he wrote that Wisconsin State Patrol trooper Bryan Ashenbrenner "smelled marijuana emanating from the car." He also reported that Ashenbrenner's search of Allison's vehicle "produced three Backwoods cigars on the front passenger seat, and two of them were filled with a green leafy material that tested positive for THC."

Allison at the time was placed under arrest and first appeared in court a day after the Packers' loss in the NFC Championship to the Falcons.

Allison and Guion are the only two suspended players on Green Bay's roster, however, Guion will miss the first four games of the regular season for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances as opposed to Allison's one.

After flashing in training camp a year ago, Allison originally earned himself a spot on the team's practice squad before being activated in October to replace Jared Abbrederis. He caught a touchdown in his first regular season game—a 33-32 loss to the Falcons in Atlanta. He finished the 2016 season with 12 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns. He led all Packers receivers with 16.8 yards per reception.

He signed his exclusive rights tender back in March to guarantee himself a spot with the team in his upcoming second season.

I hope that it's a good wake-up call to him.

I know, but I can still hope that the incident wakes the young man up to what he could lose.

I think his weed use is more likely to make him sleepy than wake him up.

In the summer I sell Frito Lay products out of a rickshaw style cart. Could anyone show me where this gentleman's neighborhood is? I see some profit potential here.

I'm for allowing players to use medical Marijuana for pain ( healthier than other chemical meds), but, we all know it would get abused and impossible to differentiate between who needs it and casual users. Just ask Mr 2 blunts on the front seat Allison if he would abuse the pain use policy.

Who cares! Millions of Americans use it recreationally and its legal in multiple states. Change the NFL policy. It's just ridiculous. Many professionals use pot & worse. The kid wasn't involved in team activities so this is just stupid IMO.

I'm fine with changing the rule, but until then, he's an imbecile for breaking it.

Technically, since the federal statute still outlaws recreational pot, all states that have "legalized" it are out of compliance. It's still illegal, but the feds have chosen not to drop the hammer on those states.

Looks like one of Yancey, Dupre, McCaffrey, Janis, etc., just got a ticket to the first week of the active roster that they weren't going to get otherwise.
