Starting Fast Will Be Important for the Packers in San Francisco

The Green Bay Packers are 9.5-point underdogs as they head west to face the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. While the Pack may not be favored in this game, they certainly have a chance to win it. One of the most important things they can do to improve their chances of winning is to get off to a fast start.

Offensively, the fast start has been part of an attitude for the Packers during their second half surge. It began on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit when the Packers won the toss and chose to receive instead of deferring their decision to the second half.

The Lions were favored at home, but the Packers set the tone by scoring a touchdown on their first drive. The first play from scrimmage was a 53-yard pass from Jordan Love to Christian Watson. The Packers took the lead four plays later when Love hit Jayden Reed on a 10-yard touchdown pass. They never trailed in the game.

The same thing worked for the Packers again last week in Dallas. As a strong underdog, the Packers won the toss and took the ball first. Love led them downfield, and they scored on a time-consuming drive that culminated with a three-yard run by Aaron Jones. The opening score gave the Packers momentum in a game I which they never trailed.

Scoring first does several things for this young Packers team. It certainly gives them a confidence boost, especially against teams that are favored like the Lions, Cowboys, or 49ers.

It also allows the offense to open the game using Matt LaFleur’s scripted plays. Usually, the first 15 or so plays are predetermined although obviously Love can change the play at the line of scrimmage if he doesn’t like the defense the other team is in.

By scoring first, the offense gains confidence in the game plan and that they can move the ball on the opposition in general. In their current four-game winning streak, the Packers have averaged 33.8-points per game. Those totals came against some pretty good defenses including a Cowboys team that was ranked fifth in the league in yards allowed and points allowed.

By scoring first, the Packers can also take the crowd out of the game. An enthusiastic and noisy crowd can be intimidating for an inexperienced team like the Packers. It also makes it tougher for the players to hear Love calling signals although he goes to visual cues when that happens. Instead of having to put up with a raucous and hostile crowd, the silence works in the road team’s favor.

More importantly, taking the early lead helps the Packers defense immensely. Joe Barry’s defense emphasizes stopping the pass over the run. Opposing teams averaged 4.4-yards per attempt which ranked 23rd in the league this season.

But when a team falls behind in a game, they are less likely to run the ball frequently and become more one-dimensional. That reduces one of the defense’s weaknesses and forces the other team to become more one-dimensional on offense.

Even if they do run the ball, it keeps the clock moving and when protecting a big lead, the Packers aren’t as concerned about four- or five-yard gains on the ground.

If the 49ers are less able to utilize Christian McCaffrey in the running game, that takes away one of the strongest weapons in their offense.

If the Packers know the opposition has to pass, they also get a better chance to devise blitzes or stunts to get more pressure on the opposing quarterback.

It also gives Barry more opportunities to mix his pass coverages and to deal with opposing offenses from a position of strength. Both the increased pass rush and the variety of coverages are more likely to lead to turnovers by the Green Bay defense as we saw in Dallas last weekend.

So, if the Packers want to keep their season going and advance to the NFC Championship Game, a fast start will be a big help towards achieving that goal.

I will add not letting SF get off to a fast start or a clock consuming drive is just as important.

Also keeping Jordan Love's pocket clean.

Stuffing the 9er's run game.

I look for this team to be dominant for over a decade, making it to at least the divisional round on a regular basis. This is great experience in a building year, only rare for those who don't make the GB roster next season.

I am still optimistic about this team. Despite the issues on defense all season long - and even those times when Love had some interception issues ( I blame Lafleur's lack of motion mid season causing Love to do anything to win including under throwing many receivers and it was because of bad offense and sitting in the pocket too long.) Now I dont expect to win today - I think that the 49ers have too many weapons especially at running back ( which Dallas didnt have) and Deebo and Kittle. I am especially worried about McCaffery out of the backfield on those swing passes. So what I really hope and I am positive of Love being in a learning position and gaining the experience of playing in a high stakes game again. As long as he gets some support from Jones running the ball and has some good drives I will be satisfied with us being in this game. Having fun talking it up to my Vike and Bear supporters. Especially after what they were sniping at me mid season.

No - and i am not in the minority - Love stood in the pocket going through his progression early in the season and took a lot of sacks - and it wasnt only the Oline's fault - and of course he didnt have Jones most of the time . But people were wondering where was the " Lafleur great offensive mind" or was it all AR.
I believe that sitting some QB's is the best - Stroud may be an exception - will see over the long run. But until Lafleur started to play to Love's and the rookie receivers strength- ie a lot of motion and Love's escapability - the offense wasnt working. And what did Getsy do in GB - was it him or was is AR?

Don't misunderestimate Jusczyk. Not only is he a ball carrier, without getting a touch he's still a playmaker. #28 could fill that role, and he might be better at the run blocking part of it than he is the RB part. Next season #44 Pearson and 84 Davis could also play that position. When he went down with a season ending injury I was afraid they would just give up on the FB position for the season, and they have.

This game will be a perfect opportunity to see why not to do that. Tucker Kraft isn't exactly playing that, but he's the closest we've got and it really helps!

#28 is more like just standard pass pro, which would also help #33 stay quick on his feet.

But with Aiyuk and their FB they've got 5 offensive weapons that are stars in their own right, play well together, know their playbook and have experience playing together. I don't know if they have the stamina to be at their best for a whole game or if they need to come out for a breather? Fortunately they do not have 5 stars on their O line. Their weakness seems to be C and RG, just like ours. This is the first time they've had their preferred starters on their D line for at least a month.

This will be a tough out. SF not having played together for a while might be our biggest advantage? I'm not proud, I'll take that. I fear that sloppy conditions favors the more physical, downhill team, and hurts the team needing to lean on finesse more. Generating pressure and causing Purdy to make some mistakes might prove to be GB's best chance? Certainly several of our defensive players would like a chance to redeem themselves from dropped interceptions this season. It'll be slick when they're trying to catch it, too.

Hopefully they play well, and nobody gets hurt.

They're going to need to play stellar football for the vast majority of 60 minutes in order to win. History against previous opponents is meaningless. The 49ers are a different kind of animal, as they can beat you with defense or outscore you in a shootout. I also don't think the crowd will remotely be taken out of the game unless the Packers were able to duplicate the type of first half performance they did against Dallas.

The biggest thing the Packers can do on defense to help themselves win is keep McCaffrey under control. In three of four of San Francisco's meaningful losses, he was held in check. In the other one, he gained 103 yards on the ground, but the Ravens forced Purdy into 4 INTs. So getting pressure on him is also at the top of the list.

Who knows who is going to get the ball the first, anyway? If the 49ers do and move the ball quickly but are held to a FG attempt, that's sort of a small victory. The Packers should be prepared to battle all game long no matter who scores first; perfect starts aren't always possible.

Yup, 100% effort from every player, on every down, all game long is an absolute MUST. This is the main thing I've looked for all season. It's a habit. It's individual character, and a team culture.

I see no signs of JL10'S ceiling, but if this team is ever to be their best, this has to become a constant rather than a variable. There's been a lot of improvement in this area over last season, but I can't say it's been the norm over each of the 18 games played so far. I don't have a tally of how many they really did vs did not. KC is a standout example this season, but there were others. Last season, only the second Vikings game came close, or maybe even counted as that?

Last game I'll give them a pass, as they were doing what coach said. Hopefully more of our players are closer to 100% because of it. The 3 on the injury report are NOT the only guys hurting. Myers has been struggling for I don't know how long without ever being on the injury report. Some depth on the interior is needed. Reed has played hurt a LOT! Maybe we'll hear his own assessment sometime in the off-season, if he was playing at 70% or what.

I read that Shanahan will defer if they win the coin toss. This gives the Packers an opportunity to play ahead from the start. I think this move by SF is the wrong choice, given their Offense against the GB Defense. It would serve SF best to get the lead early and first, but they appear to have confidence to stop the 1st quarter scoring ability of GB.

I'm betting the law of averages that GB ends the losing cycle against SF on the money line and with the points.

I also put a little on the Texans to play better than Prescott, oops, I mean Lamar in the playoffs, since both Prescott and Lamar seem equal (not good) when playing in them.

I feel good about them, since I selected 195 winners this year, over 70% win rate, and I can absorb the loss if it happens Bet with my head, not my heart, perhaps some heart this week. LOL.

They've made it this far and and not many fans thought they would myself including. 49ers are a strong, physical aggressive smash mouth style type of ball club, the type the Packers never play well against. So I would tell these young Packer athletes go out have fun stay focused and leave it all on the field. Your playing with house money the pressure is all on the 49ers. 49ers 31 Packers 17. I hope I'm wrong. Go Pack GO...

We have the WR horses to run with anyone in the NFL. Use them to get ahead and take SF out of their game plan. We should be able to move the ball in the run and pass game on them. The key will be having the right mix of/ TE's and WR's on the field to put things in our favor while slowing their pass rush. I would like to see 5 wide and see how that works for us. Our Defense will have their hands full. If we can get pressure on Purdy and get a few 3nouts or a turnover we should be able to pull ahead with points as long as we score TD's instead of 3 points.

If I were an opposing defensive coordinator, the way I'd approach Green Bay:

Do not blitz. Line up no more than 4 on the LOS, dare the Packers to run the ball. Do not bite on play action, if the Packers beat you on the ground, so be it. Ideally, generate pressure on Love from your DL by way of inside stunts, attack the interior of the OL, but keep your edge defenders at home to keep Love contained as much as possible. Play a mix of man on the edges with zone underneath; force Love to throw high to get over the zones if he wants to hit WRs over the middle.

Blitzing Love is a mistake. He understands how to identify the pressures, and more importantly, he understands how to ply his offense to take advantage of the holes in coverage created when you send the extra defender. Love has a tendency to throw high to his targets, he's been somewhat lucky so far that his WRs have been able to elevate and make tough catches that could easily become tipped balls falling into the hands of a waiting safety.

This approach is a tall order, it takes a next level defensive front to pull it off. I could even see SF putting 3 man fronts out there and uncharacteristically trotting out a dime back occasionally to help keep the passing lanes cluttered. I am concerned that the 49ers have the horses to pull off 4 man fronts and still manage the ground game and even pressure Love, and I'm concerned that the 49ers being intimately familiar with the offense they're facing will help keep them from being blinded by the pre-snap motion and theatrics at the LOS.

I have no idea if the 49ers take the approach I've laid out, but I'm concerned they might, and I'm worried it might actually stymie this high-flying Packers offense.

As I mentioned last week, this young Packers team hasn't faced a team as talented as the 49ers (or Ravens) yet- I do think these two teams are a cut above all others in the league this season. This will be a great measuring stick game for this very young, very exciting, and very talented Packers team.

All that being said... It just feels like it might be another opportunity for the Packers to upset and shock the league, doesn't it?

I am concerned, but I'm hopeful.. I can't wait to find out how this goes down and see how the story writes itself.

Think the Pack will go out with 12 personnel… using 2 TEs. On defense I believe Ballentine and. Valentine are every bit as talented. They were a part of the wins against KC, Detroit. I think GB should rush 5-6 and play man mixed with zone… just like they did against Dallas . Aiyuk, Deebo, Kittle and McCaffre are the only ones Id concentrate on and Make SF use someone else all game long. Purdy can and will scramble which is another x factor. The Defense is going to have their hands full thats for sure. Hopefully Love can throw it all over the yard cause i dont see anyone really running against SF.

That's five starting players out of 11. You have 5 OL. That means the Packers have the luxury of not focusing on 1 guy on the field. So we're basically focusing on the entire offense...You are right, It will be a tall order. :)

I am hopeful, but this is going to be a big challenge. Our defense gets a chance to prove the last few weeks were not a fluke.

Jaire Alexander is listed as questionable. I think if and only if he plays do the Packers have a shot. I think the Niners have about one third of all the pro bowl players on their team. It doesn't seem fair. Didn't Dallas get whipped by the Niners too? That said,I think the media has underestimated the Pack. They are predicting Niners by 10. If I were a betting man I would take the Packers and 9.5 points. But....that's why they play the game. GPG

The last couple of yrs playing SF.. the games have been close. So I don’t understand the -9 spread. I can see it within a field goal. I just hope the officiating will be on par, but i doubt it… the officiating did just about everything they could do to give Dallas an advantage. But its games like this is why im hoping they drafted Brooks and Wooden… help slow down that rushing attack. But new year, new team. Hopefully GB can pull it out

No turnovers. Love has a tendency to throw several risky passes each game. His interception stats don't indicate a problem, but watching the game, there were several times in recent games when it was the defender simply not catching the ball that prevented the turnover.

The Packers aren't going to get far enough ahead to take Christian McCaffrey out of the game. He's a big play running back, and they will use him even if they are behind by a couple of scores. The good news is that the Packers have been playing better against the run for awhile now, even in the two games they lost down the stretch against the Giants and Buccaneers. I was wondering at the time if Barry was putting TOO much emphasis on stopping the run and leaving the defense vulnerable to throws over the middle and QB scrambles.

But starting with the Vikings game, the defense has been very good against the run AND pass. Why? Maybe Wyatt and Slaton have hit their stride. Also, they seem to have two of their top three inside linebackers healthy every week, which was often not the case earlier in the season. The safeties have not been nearly as bad as many of us feared they would be coming into the year. And maybe Valentine and Ballentine now have enough experience to be trusted in coverage. Everyone is playing together and making it work.

This is their toughest test yet. The Cowboys could be knocked off their game more easily than the 49ers can. The 49ers aren't superheroes, though. They can be had.
