2021 Packers Stock Report: Week 4

Take a look at the stock report for the Green Bay Packers after a 27-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4.

The Green Bay Packers took care of business in Week 4.

Coming into the matchup, let’s be honest, this was a game that the Packers should have won. Thankfully, the Packers handled the Pittsburgh Steelers pretty much from start to finish in a 27-17 home victory.

So let’s get into the stock report for Week 4.

BUY

Randall Cobb- With Marquez Valdes-Scantling on injured reserve for a few weeks, buy Randall Cobb’s stock up while you still can. The veteran receiver saw increased snaps on Sunday, and proved that he’s still got it. He was Aaron Rodgers’ most reliable weapon when the Packers needed a big play. He came up with big third down catches and a couple touchdowns. Even with Valdes-Scantling’s return in a couple weeks, if Cobb keeps playing like this, the Packers will be forced to keep him on the field more often.

Eric Stokes- I’ve included Eric Stokes on my “buy” list a couple times already, but I’m telling you, I really believe he’s going to be a standout player in this league someday. He recorded his first career interception against the Steelers, and has the second-most pass-breakups in the NFL (6). He’s really proven his worth with Kevin King on the sideline. With Jaire Alexander’s status up in the air, Stokes will be relied on even more in the coming weeks.

Billy Turner- You know whose name we haven’t heard much of this season? Billy Turner. And when you’re playing on the offensive line, most of the time it’s a good thing when you don’t hear a name called often. Turner has been the unquestioned leader of a young offensive line, and his play reflects that of a solid veteran. Nothing flashy, but he gets the job done. Matt LaFleur said Turner graded out as the best offensive lineman on Sunday, against TJ Watt, no-less.

SELL

Jaire Alexander- Don’t get me wrong, I love Jaire Alexander. Please don’t roast me in the comments for this one. However, the star cornerback has given up as many touchdowns (2) through four weeks as he did all of last season. More importantly for including him on this list (because we all know he’s made plenty of plays this season), Alexander exited the game with an injury against the Steelers, and I would be shocked if he plays in the coming weeks. He’s got an AC joint injury, and reports vary on the severity of it. Maybe the Packers can get some help in free agency… Stephon Gilmore? (UPDATE: Just minutes after this original post, Gilmore was traded to the Panthers for a sixth round pick in 2023).

Ty Summers- This addition to the “sell” list is based off play alone. Ty Summers came in at points during the game and played next to De’Vondre Campbell, who has been excellent. Throughout the contest, Summers missed a couple run fits and looked lost. He’s an average special teams player, but his time on the defense should be limited moving forward.

HOLD

Robert Tonyan- Robert Tonyan has done a lot of good things for this offense that hasn’t necessarily showed up on the stat sheet. He’s run lots of routes, but has only been targeted 15 times. However, he’s drawn a couple defensive pass interferences, and Rodgers has missed him, too. Hold on to Tonyan’s stock, because it’s about to blow up. He’s due for a big game soon.

Stephon Gilmore is currently injury prone. He started the season injured, and that is a big reason why the Pats are dropping him. That, and the fact that his level of playing has dropped off. He would be a bad addition.

This is not a good list.. if jaire misses multiple games you will find out what kevin king and yiadon are capable of and that is vetting burned.

Terrible take 😪

Hello, yes, thanks for your comment. I'm looking at an individual's stock, not the team. Alexander's stock isn't high because of an injury that will most likely force him to miss time.

Right, jhtobias does not understand the purpose or intent of the stock report :). Totally understand why Jaire is listed as sell.

Of course, if in today's presser ML states that Jaire will be playing against the Bengals, that would change.

Forget: Gilmore--he's been traded to the Panthers for a sixth-round pick. He's from that area, so it was probably a preferred destination for him.

Hold: "Next man up." Not sure if it's going to cut it this time with our CB depth, but looks like we don't have much choice.

Buy: Agree with Cobb--we need him now.

Buy: Campbell and Stokes will continue to be busy, busy, busy...,

Buy: Bengals LB Logan Wilson. I couldn't resist going over to the other side here; this guy is doing it all right now, and it looks like he's going to be a star.

Buy: Run defense. With Mixon potentially out, this is going to help.

Nervous hold: Special teams. Obviously bright spots with Crosby, Bojoquez, and Stokes, but that blocked FG could have just as easily stood. Punt returns need to be better and penalty-free.

Sell: Fourth quarter play-calling. Twice in row now we've seen Rodgers winging it downfield when logic dictates that we should be running or completing short clock-eating passes htat move the chains.

Pitt was going after Stokes aggressively and for the most part he held his own. This week will feature a better slinger. However, Burrow has been sacked 11 times and hopefully that # will increase. Mixon must be contained.

Mixon probably wont play due to a sprained ankle - Watch out for Chase if he doesnt do the drops. Stokes needs to shadow him as with our injuries he may be the only guy who can keep up. Good thing that Cinci's Oline is as bad as Pittsburghs

I really wanted Logan Wilson at the Packers #62 pick in 2020. He went at 65 to the Bengals. I had AJ Dillon for the Packers in the 3rd round... would he have lasted? Who knows, we would have missed out on Deguara unless we didnt trade our #4 to move up to get Love and he lasted to rd4... What could have been...

Imagine Logan Wilson on the GBP and Jones and Williams both in GB while we would probably have missed out on AJ Dillon.

Oh well...

And imagine Packers without some kind of the back up solution if Diva decide to run away from the organization who made him the best paid player ever. They paid him that much money because they DO NOT RESPECT HIM?

Also I did not hear or read any report of Packers-Diva contract where is stated that GM and HC has to listen what Diva has to say about their job!

If you want to be honest fulfill what you signed... It is that simple.

Buy: The offense. 27+ points three weeks in row, 3-0. They protect the ball, stay on the field, and score points. The offensive line has been very good WITHOUT Jenkins and Bakhtiari. When these guys come back……………

Hold: The defense. Injuries are adding up. Z, Barnes, King, Alexander. That’s 4 starter. And you can spare me your gratuitous shot at King. We’ve won a lot of games with him at corner and he’d start for most teams in the league.

Sell: The people who begin crapping their panties as soon as Pittsburgh scored. Could you possibly be any more faint-hearted?

For your information , I had my Depends on. I'll gladly take a healthy/rested King this week over some unproven rookie. The Z injury is very problematic as he was one of the best pass rushers in the league, and difficult to replace.

I had to laugh. About 20 years ago, another coach showed me this advertisement for a casting call, They wanted guys who looked “mature, rugged, and outdoorsy “. Good money, too, But when we showed up and they told us it was a commercial for Depends. We left and drank some beer and laughed.

These people who come unglued at the first bump in the road………I don’t understand people like that.

My drill sergeant impressed on me the importance of clenching so you wouldn’t have an involuntary release. It actually does seem to help.

I'd put a buy on Davante Adams. Yeah, his numbers were not as great as usual. However, he had a big effect on the game.

Five times the Packers split Davante out alone and put 3 TEs on the other side. Five times Pitt responded by having a CB opposite Adams with a safety shaded outside the hashmarks towards Davante's side of the field. So that took one safety out of the box. Four times the Packers ran the ball with Dillon for nice yardage. The fifth time the Packers had Tonyan run the seam where he was wide open but AR underthrew the pass.

Helped GB run the clock while up 3 scores. Should have been the dagger, or another dagger. Thanks to Justis Mosqueda for the tweet with the video of those five plays (link below).

I think Yosh Nijman is a buy. As a third string left tackle he has faced Nick Bosa and TJ Watt in consecutive weeks and performed creditably. Any time a third stringer left tackle can successfully get you by those two game wreckers, that is a big win. I don't know if he will ever be a starter, but he can certainly be the Packers swing tackle for the next several years.

Well, it kind of makes that contract we gave to Bakhtiari look like it maybe wasn’t needed.

Nijman, Newman, Runyon and Myers look like real good additions. We’re going to have a pretty good line for the next couple of years, assuming we keep stocking the pond.

Color me surprised every time a big name player gets cut...there's a call to sign them because they will improve the team. Of course they would improve the team, now what are you going to pay them with...a soda can franchise for Green Bay's stadium? There is no money! You can give up a 5th round pick for him, but you can't pay him because the Packers are cap strapped. Douglas is doable but a very marginal player.

Summers/Burks are not the answer to any question that begins with NFL starter. They might be the answer to any question that begins athletic football players that don't know how to play football. So maybe a present has fallen from Santa's sled on an early run in the form of a LB dropped by the Cowboys. The good news is his salary is paid by the Cowboys. The bad news...he's played like Burks/Summers this season and most of last year. It appears to be a attitude issue verses medical, but I don't really know.
So take a swing with Smith, and not waste resources on a guy you can't sign.

In three week we will see if any of these new signings make a difference more than a hill of beans.

Looks like we swung and hit on the Smith pitch. Let's hope that he can be paired with Campbell and finally solidify the ILB position.

Smith/Campbell/Barnes is a pretty decent ILB trio, even if Smith isn't who he was in 2019. Summers is a pure liability, and Burks is best suited as an interior pass rusher similar to what Z had been doing when he went inside.

Douglas sounds like a depth signing, which we need right now. He has experience playing zone, which is good, and he sounds like a big guy who can tackle. At this point he just needs to be better than Yiadom, but he gives GB some flexibility if they want to move Stokes inside.

Stokes right now is giving opposing receivers a big cushion. Burrow and Cincy know this, and will be looking to exploit the soft coverage. Why not throw safe passes in front of Stokes and regular get 5-7 yards? And last night on a game preview on YouTube, I saw a terrifying sight: Jamarr Chase getting behind a defender, catching the ball and going for a TD. That is Kevin King's signature problem (not being able to cover someone who gets behind him) in a nutshell. Also, on the thought of adding Gilmore, perhaps you should talk to Tim Backes. He has some strong opinions about people who want to get the big name, flavor of the week player. This is going to be a very tough game. The Packers offense better be in high gear, because I think their defense is not a good matchup with Cincy.
