2021 Preseason Hits And Misses
What you saw is not what you will get.

The 2021 Green Bay Packers preseason is mercifully over. The old contention that preseason games mean nothing has never been more true. The line up that will take the field for the season opener in two weeks will be a completely different team. So did we learn anything useful while watching the deep reserves get pounded the last three weeks? Maybe a little.
Most Important Thing We Learned:
Jordan Love has the talent, if not yet the good judgment, to be a quarterback in the NFL. He showed a strong arm, accurate passes, the ability to use his feet to make a play, and the leadership to move the team down the field. Is he ready now to be the starter? No. But he doesn't have to be ready now. The only thing required of him for the remainder of 2021 is to come in at the end of games and take a knee. If he is still executing so poorly in the red zone next preseason, then it will be time to worry.
Most Valuable Player - Offense
I'm not sure what else Malik Taylor can do to prove he belongs on the team. In all three games, he was all over the field, running precise patterns, making tough catches, and showing at times spectacular body control by staying in bounds. He contributes on special teams, and has even been a kick returner a few times. If the Packers choose to keep just five receivers and Taylor is left out, surely he has put enough on tape to be scooped up by a receiver-hungry team. No way he makes it through waivers to the practice squad.
Most Impressive Rookie
It probably has to be center Josh Myers. Despite taking some tongue lashings from Aaron Rodgers for practice miscues, the former Ohio State star was installed as the starter on day one, and has done nothing to shake the coach's faith in him. If Myers holds up at center it will be a tremendous break for the offensive line. In the early absence of David Bakhtiari, it allows Elgton Jenkins to focus on playing tackle and Lucas Patrick to concentrate on being a guard.
Most Valuable Player - Defense
Honestly, I didn't see anybody on defense play well enough consistently to deserve the label, but I'll go with rookie Jack Heflin. The free agent seemed to be around the ball and made a few plays behind the line of scrimmage. As an undrafted free agent, he began as a long shot to make the final 53, but he is fortunate to play on the weakest unit of the team, defensive line. There will be a spot in this room for a guy like Heflin who hustles and holds the point reasonably well.
Most Pleasant Surprise
Running back Kylin Hill has shown he is immediately ready to contribute. The number three running back isn't normally expected to play much, but Hill flashed speed, explosiveness, good hands in the pass game, and a nose for the end zone. The Packers also used him to return kickoffs. He is an unexpected extra weapon on an offense loaded with artillery. Hill put a quick and convincing end to the competition with Patrick Taylor and Dexter Williams.
Biggest Disappointment
It has to be the dismal tackling and lack of playmaking in the defensive secondary. Watching the DB's try to make a stop in the open field became almost comical, as they were consistently late to the ball, then tried to launch themselves into the receiver, often resulting in spectacular whiffs. Opposing teams just kept throwing the ball in front of our secondary, knowing the receiver would elude the first defender. If this is typical of the tackling on this Joe Barry defense, the Packers are in grave trouble.
Biggest Surprise Cut
When Devin Funchess led the team with six catches for 70 yards in the first game, I wrote that not only does he belong on the team, but he will compete to be the number two receiver. I couldn't have been more wrong. Funchess suffered an injury in practice, never saw the field again, was placed on IR, and then waived injured. Wow. That was a quick fall from grace. It seems Funchess is going to be one of those talented guys that just can't stay healthy enough to build a career. The Packers chose not to wait on him any longer.
Hard Luck Player of the Preseason
Receiver Equanimeous St. Brown never had a chance. Entering what likely was a last chance camp, EQ couldn't seem to overcome a hamstring problem. The few times he got on the practice field he actually looked pretty good by most accounts, but he wasn't healthy enough to play in any of the preseason games, and likely watched Malik Taylor take whatever spot he might have had on the 53. He might end up on the practice squad, but one has to wonder if the Packers are ready to move on as they did with Funchess.
Players Worth Sticking With
Jace Sternberger, Yosh Nijman, Kabion Ento, Jonathan Garvin
Players Out of Time
Oren Burks, Dexter Williams, Patrick Taylor, Jake Hanson

Amari Rodgers just disapeared in camp. Hill looked more like a 3rd rounder, and AR a 7th

I think Rodgers was OK. not great, but he was picking things up. I thought he looked decent against Buffalo. AmRod was force-fed the offense through a fire hose. He was running pretty much his full route tree in each game and playing a lot of snaps. RBs have a different--and usually faster--acclimation process: they have assignments, sure, but running the ball is more instinctual than adjusting routes...and RBs usually don't depend as highly on QB play.

Most Important Thing We Learned:
Love had ups and downs. You can see talent, but for him to take the next step its the mental part of it. And he just needs game reps. He needs to learn that he can't throw the ball up for grabs in the redzone. Not in that situation.
Most Valuable Player - Offense
I can see the argument for Taylor. He was the best weapon on the field. I think I am going with Kylin Hill though. He was impressive! Comparing him to the other 2 RB's behind him, is a huge difference. Hill not only has earned the 3rd RB spot, he has earned playing time in the regular season IMO. He wasn't doing it against scrubs either. He was doing it against the Jets and Bills starters.
Most Impressive Rookie
Hill to me was the most impressive especially when you factor in draft position. But I can see the case made for Myers. But since I want to spread around the love, I will say my most impressive rookie is Newman. Newman started out behind Patrick and Runyan and even Braden, but by the end of camp he appears to be the starting RG. And not just winning the job, he looked great doing so. He was up against starters and didn't give up 1 pressure. He not only took the RG spot, he forced Patrick to move to the battle at LG with Runyan. Which essentially they are a warm body until Bakhtiari comes back to take the LT spot and move Jenkins back to LG.
Most Valuable Player - Defense
I really like the Heflin pick. He may have beat out Lancaster for a spot on the 53. He has more pass rush ability, and holds up well in the run game. Not saying they are getting rid of Lancaster but if there is 1 spot between the 2 of them, i could see Heflin winning that job.
Another name I would like to mention here is Henry Black. Black I think is our 3rd safety. He was all over the field and could be brought in to play a 3rd safety role in packages.
Most Pleasant Surprise
I already talked about Hill. I love the kid. I think he is the Packers biggest steal in the draft.
Since I talked about Hill earlier I want to say my biggest surprise is Kurt Benkert. He played a lot better then I could have thought. He played well enough to be a #3 QB on the 53. Whether they keep 2 or 3 is yet to be determined, but he Definitely surprised me.
Biggest Disappointment
For me we spent the first part of training camp talking about how our WR battle for the final spot was going to be so fun to watch. It started out to be a great battle. Unfortunately we never got to see that materialize in the preseason games. We saw Funchess light it up in the first game to get hurt and now was released. We got to see Malik Taylor run away with the job. We never got to see WInfree or EQ. I was really looking forward to seeing Winfree. He was a guy that everyone was talking about during the offseason and during the preseason. Then he didn't get to play.
Biggest Surprise Cut
I agree with the Funchess situation being the biggest surprise cut. I will add that if they don't go out and get Cobb, I think they wait it out with Funchess.
Hard Luck Player of the Preseason
I do really like EQ. Unfortunately I think his time in GB is done. Unless they keep 7 WR's he won't be on the 53. There is a chance he goes to the PS, especially with the injury, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is time in GB is done.
Players Worth Sticking With
Maybe not on the 53, but on the PS I hope they keep Chauncey Rivers, Ray Wilburn, Kurt Benkert, Innis Gaines, Christian Uphoff, Reggie Begleton,
Players Out of Time
I agree with this list. Though I'm not as sold on the Oren Burks. He is a good special teams player

Pretty much in agreement RCP. I believe we keep 6 receivers with Taylor being the sixth receiver. Winfree to the PS. All the others will be cut.

I have some remarks on your points:
1. Jordan Love. He is sure still "statring QB in work". I do not take that interception and another similar shot so tragic. You have to understand that he was little upset he was not able to play against Jets and he badly wanted to impress. I agree with you that his main goal this season is to settle his mind and to better focus when he is in game. Nobody will complain about that INT if there was 4th down, but he has to understand very simple thought - "what next!" Next was 2nd down. Nothing was lost at that moment. He will prevail those mind farts.
2. Dissapointment - For me it is Jace Sternberger. I wish him all the best in the future anywhere he will play and it may be even on Packers PS. It is not his drops that happens from time to time. It is his blocking. It is not Packers OL or Jardan Love mistake that we did not score. It is Jace "BB" Sternberger mistake (BB is here for Baaaad blocking).
3. I understand your love of Hill. At the end, only 2 preseason TD was his scores. And for both TD he needed some heavy work before he reached the end zone, sorry gold zone.
4. I can bet that we will be surprised buy choices which will be made by FO in co-operation with coaching staff, which player will stay, which player will go to PS and which player will be cut.
5. Notable mention - Isaiah McDuffie! He had better performance than Oren Burks and he is also valuable player on ST. It will be interesting!

If you take what he did earlier in the game and against Houston, he's working the progressions. He's finding open receivers (case in point, the Dafney completion) when he could've taken his checkdown or run. It's encouraging with him and the mental part of the game.

Yes. He scored 2 of the 3 Packer TDs this preseason, and both required significant effort on his part. He's a potential replacement for AJones a year or two down the road.

I still am holding out hope for Burks. I think it’s going to be a mental thing. He has the skill but needs the confidence.

Ken, I’m curious what makes you think Sternberger is worth sticking with. What has he put out there that says “I’m going to be an NFL caliber player”? I see a TE in the mold of old Jimmy Graham. No block and half effort unless the pass is for him.

Sternberger is a guy I struggle with.
I loved him coming out of college and, give his injuries, I want to give him more opportunity because he has so much potential. The Packers offense has roles for many types of tight ends, including guys who catch a lot better than they block.
That being said, he's still been inconsistent this preseason.
He might be the toughest call to make in the final round of cut downs,

He looked like he’d given up on Saturday. He’s done nothing to improve his playing strength over the off season either and he often doesn’t even try to block. Perhaps his head is in the wrong place, but he’d be a really easy cut for me. As would EQ. Burks tries, but he just doesn’t have instincts. I’d find that harder than two who seem to think it will just come to them to me. All 3 should go though.

Equanimeous St. Brown has had every chance over several seasons. He’ll likely follow Funchess out the door as another talented guy that couldn’t stay healthy. I think the jury is still out in Jace and Yosh, but Burks is on the 53. Middle linebacker is thin and he’s a key special teamer. Not sure what you saw in the preseason that makes you feel his time is up. It was clear after the Houston game when his snap count went down that they wanted a more thorough look at some other guys on the bubble. Although many fans would rejoice, I’d be surprised if Burks is let go.

Once you get past Campbell and Barnes (we presume they're the best of the lot), I don't see a tremendous amount of difference in the remaining ILBs. Burks, Harris, Summers, McDuffie...it seems like you could just draw a couple names out of a hat.

Burks is the one who showed he’s still clueless if not rushing. Summers did little in camp and was one I thought might make a jump. Wilborn, McDuffie and Harris look like they can run, cover (in the order listed and tackle in the reverse order) and tackle and all play STs. Burks is a good ST player, but so are others. You have to be at least marginally competent on more than STs. Burks isn’t except as a rusher. McDuffie and Harris did that well too. If we were seriously evaluating players Burks should be gone and Summers might be. Pick upside if all things are equal.
Black looks a really good box safety prospect. Gaines is good too. Neither are ready to play deep. Scott might be the best all round, but is injured. Still think we need a deep player if Is to play star or Amos is in the box.

Given the Packers tendency in past years to use a 3rd safety over a 4th CB, that cover S role would look pretty important.
I think there's better talent in the CB room now, though, and even if Barry might favor S (like Pettine) he's going to have to use those CBs.

Snaps played by Rashan Gary, Dean Lowry, Kenny Clark, and Z. Smith = 0.
Snaps played by Alexander, King, Amos, and Savage = 0.
Pass rush was abysmal...that should improve as the defense moves plays its 1s and becomes a little more creative, and that will create opportunities for the DBs to make things happen. Does that excuse tackling? Not so much...but you've got guys playing a whole ton of snaps back there who should never see the light of day on defense. They've got to make plays when they're out there, yes, but if you were expecting #1 CB play out of Kabion Ento, Richard Dawson and Michael Jackson...well, survey says: Heee Heee!

This is exactly what I find funny with comments i have heard from people talking about how 'bad' they have looked this preseason. I have had to remind people that a good portion of the guys playing won't be with the team by tomorrow.
I will say I was overall fairly impressed that our 2nd/3rd/4th stringers did hold up fairly well against the Jets and Bills number 1 units, without any game planning done. And with the defense we still have no clue how they are going to run the defense. We are accustomed to seeing the Pettine version with this team. We don't know what Joe Barry's defense is going to look like schematically.

I agree and I think your comment about not knowing the defense is important. Barry showed next to nothing. He was just shuffling people and positions to see what we have.
That led to the group never being in synch in addition to all being inexperienced and not used to playing together. That last fact alone can wreck a D. A lot of the young players haven’t played much football in the last year or so as well. We learned about individuals, not much more.

I would flip Burks and Sternberger on the keep / don't keep lists. While I am not an Oren Burks fan, at least he is a key contributor on special teams and gives the defense some pass rush capability in situational play. I just am not seeing an NFL grade player in Jace Sternberger. He is a lousy blocker and a lackadaisical route runner / pass catcher. I simply don't see the effort necessary for an NFL player. I will be shocked if Sternberger makes the practice squad much less the 53.

Nuata seemingly was seen as an improvement before injury. I see they worked out Doug Peterson’s TE son this week: they are looking at TEs. I’d say the wall has already been written on.

Hey, don't forget that there was a time when Richard Rodgers was the only person on the team who could actually catch a ball. He had great hands. I think it was one of the early years of Adams dropping everything...

I find it hard to be sympathetic to EQ. He’s had a litany of “small” issue injuries over his time. With him they seem to last longer than for others too. Sometimes you have to play through niggles. I just don’t think he does. Winfree is the guy I feel sorry for. He’s fought his way through to finally get to the NFL and stay there. Looks like he belongs and then hurts his shoulder.
I’d say Newman over Meyers not to denigrate Meyers but because Newman was a much bigger surprise in terms of level of performance. A nod to Nijman too.
On D it’s really hard to say because we never played a settled one and were mostly testing inexperienced players. Heflin was probably the big surprise though Slaton was better than most seemed to expect too. That’s about the only part of the D that saw any consistency.
My big worry is ILB. McDuffie, Wilborn and Harris all looked better than Burks and Summers. Burks looked lost every time he was not asked to charge forward. Those three can cover and tackle and pLay ST. I’m not sure Burks can and Summers disappointed this summer.
It looks like Garvin at OLB 4. I can’t say I’ve seen him justify the coaches’ faith that he deserves it. I’d consider a waiver claim. Likewise, I like the 3 young safeties, Scott, Black and Gaines, but I do not want any of them playing deep is Savage or Amos are up near the line or injured. I do like the idea of Denmark being tried there. If not, we need a waiver claim (and still give Denmark a real look).
I still like Ento. You can’t teach instincts, you can improve tackling technique/angles. He was also the highest rated ST player on Saturday. Yiadom is either a possible deep safety candidate or a cut. He can not play with his back to the cb.
The worst camp award for me goes to Sternberger and EQ. Men for whom football seems too much effort. Sad to see talent wasted. We could see a TE picked up easily.
Sternberger, EQ, and Burks should be gone. I fear Burks won’t be and I fear the moment he takes the field on D. As to the RBs, I’d keep Taylor on the PS as a reserve pounder: he gets hard yards. Williams is a third down type. He had a good camp but I’d play Jones and Hill before him and his catching and blocking isn’t great. Hanson was better in the last game. He might make the PS. I’d look at Capra and Van Lanen as developmental PS candidates too. I think Kelly will be cut.

Pretty much agree on all points CW - excellent wrap up to the preseason.
My most pleasant surprise was Nijman. I did not like his first game against the Texans, but he he was much improved against the Jets and the Bills. The best part is that he looked good against some pretty formidable starting D-lines with the Jets and Bills. I have high hopes that he is the swing tackle and the Packers get to save some cap dollars by cutting Kelly.

We will see what happens with ESB. Might he go to IR? That would be my guess as the guy has talent. If he does is there a settlement and release, or does he stick around another year?
I'm guessing there was more to the Funchess release than just the injury. I'm wondering how well he fit the GBP's type of player they want.
After mentioning ESB and Funchess I harken back to the top five WR's collectively deciding to skip attending the voluntary camp. Many of us discussed how that might come back and bite some of them in the backside at count down.
Winfrey, never saw him but would sure like to see him clear waivers for a chance to watch him next year.
This Packers team has a boatload of talent at every single position on offense. Going to be so fun watching them.
K. Hill a total steal much like A. Jones in 5th round. Hill needs to play this year and I believe he will play more than we think.
Jordan Love....what a fantastic selection late in 1st round when all of Gutey's preferred players were off the board. Believe Jordan's ceiling is very high and he will be an exceptional QB for the Packers for many years. Regardless of what happens with Rodgers in 2022 Gutey has the Packers set up to to be extremely strong at the QB for a long time. For all of those making absurd knee jerk comments that Love is a bust it is going to be fun watching him evolve into a top 10 QB.
Going to be a fun year regardless of SB, or not! Go GBP's!

ESB is in the last year of his contract. He might go to IR if he’s injured because that is the rule, but if you meant as a device for keeping him around, it’s pointless. Would you offer him a new contract? As with Sternberger, bye bye.

Can understand the frustration with ESB. Likely he isn't around after Tuesday, but...
1. He is highly talented and we do not see him in practice, or know what medical people are thinking.
2. With almost no WR's currently signed for next season with his skill and knowledge might it make sense to stash him at least until the Packers make up their minds about Adam's and ARod?

Having watched Love in college, what we see is pretty much what we have always seen. Hopefully, coaching can help him improve the decision-making/execution part. Hopefully. I too would flip Sternberger and Burks. Butks has merit on special teams. Sternberger just hasnt shown much. Strike that, he has shown he cant, or wont, block. And that he has poor decision making skills. I am also unenthused by the defensive coaching. Berry was an odd choice. Go Pack go!

Preseason didn't get to show the first team O, but I think it's even better than last year's great offense. The reason?... Randall Cobb. At the moment, Cobb is clearly better than Amari Rodgers. He actually had a decent year last year. He's a seasoned pro, has a great rapport with Rodgers, and he'll have to be accounted for by opposing defenses, thus removing some double teams on Adams while opening the field for MVS and Lazard. I see Cobb having a huge year.

Biggest surprise cut to me was Kamal Martin. With the preseason he had last year, where he was looking like a world beater, prior to his injury... that one took me by surprise a bit.
However, I do think Ray Wilborn is the better, more reliable player at ILB, 100%, making Martin easily expendable. Wilborn wasn't missing tackles. He was making them. Add in his coverage skills, and I think he definitely won a job on this Packers Final 53 man roster. Ray looks solid, and he's got nearly the identical physical profile to that of Kamal Martin. Wilborn is a big, long, fast player at ILB.
Ken, I like the Taylor, Myers and Heflin calls, and believe firmly that Kylin Hill and Royce Newman have to be in a tie for Most Pleasant Surprise. Remarkable play by both of those players this preseason.
Yosh Nijman has to have solidified his spot on the 53, without question. He's our backup swing tackle.
Players worth sticking with on the 53 man roster: Nijman, Wilborn, Denmark (despite the small sample size, Denmark appears to be the superior player, and a more willing/effective tackler than Ento), Braden, Heflin, Rivers, Black, Garvin, Uphoff, Gaines (we did keep 5 Safeties last season, and I like the raw talent we have to develop at S throughout this year).
Players worth sticking with on PS appear to be Abdullah Anderson, Reggie Begelton, Kurt Benkert, Coy Cronk, Kabion Ento, Tipa Galaei, Damon Hazelton, Bronson Kaufusi, Dennis Kelly, Delontae Scott, Willington Previlon, Rojesterman Farris, and Juan Winfree.
Players out of time I would consider to be Oren Burks, Ty Summers, EQ.
Based on performance, I wouldn't stick with Sternberger. Jace doesn't seem to want it.

Pretty good summary (though we differ on Uphoff). I would keep Capra on the PS. I’m just as high on McDuffie as Wilborn. I’d keep both and Harris on the PS.

We really don't differ on him a whole lot, as we both know he's not fully NFL ready today, and easily could be one year away from contributing. We only differ in thinking how GB can retain him within the system.
Yosh Nijman was the last UDFA that had a line of suitors behind him like this. Gutekunst understood that and did all he could to protect Nijman. My thinking is he'll have to fight off those other teams who coveted signing Uphoff in UDFA in like kind.
Really funny looking back on that memory, Coldworld. I was so excited about the Yosh signing then... ha! Three years later, and the kid is going to actually legit make the roster as our swing Tackle, fully developed in system, without spending a draft pick to acquire him.

0-3 in pre-season. Lets get right into this. If Gute wanted a future MVP QB. He's not on this roster. Herbert should of been the guy he traded up for. Regardless of cost. That said. Trade LOVE. /// Tes - Keep them over a WR. As much as we keep seeing the Wrs battle every year. The WRs out of college, are just so much more athletic then any other position now. It won't matter who is behind Amari Rodgers. Prediction: Lazard will be gone after this year. Don't give me route running, when MVS is a perfect example for speed. Sign him before Adams. OL- Great Balls of fire. I thought we built the wall two years ago. If rookies can make that great of impact. Why wait for a guy from the PS? The Defense was fixed but never finished. So much went into this secondary. I only can say; King keeps looking better and better. LBs. - I see who is really good. But Why keep who isn't? After 3 years- they won't start. After Crosby missed that chip shot. I'm worried. This team has spent to much time trying to judge what they have. .

On that concern about tackling, I think that maybe Barry messed it up by the time in classroom when he tackled in air. And they have been doing that all preseason.

Sternberger has to be a definite cut, the guy has actually regresses from last year and now bone headed enough to use drugs, good bye! I would dump Love now as well as he is still worth something, he is not going to be decent QB! Benkert seems to me to have more upside than Love at this point and Begelton better have some better looks at!

Sternberger has just not developed
I am not so sure he has the "want to" in him.
He says he added 10 pounds in the off-season but he is as thin framed as ever...does he ever see the weight room?
He may stay for the two Game suspension in case of injury but after that if the TE room is healthy I think he's gone.
