2022 Packers Stock Report: Week 7

Take a look at the stock report for the Green Bay Packers after a 23-21 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 7.

I am straight up not having a good time.

The Green Bay Packers, blessed with a very talented football team, look like a shell of their former selves. Three straight losses, with their fourth staring them directly in the face, has me feeling some type of way.

Mental mistakes, drops, missed tackles and coaching errors have been abundant since game one, and it has definitely caught up with our favorite team.

Let's take a look at the stock report for the Green Bay Packers after a 23-21 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 7.

BUY

Preston Smith- Playing against his former team, Preston Smith actually played really well on Sunday. He had a couple QB pressures and was strong against the run. Outside of trying to cover Justin Jefferson for a play in Week 1, Smith has actually played really well all season long. Which has been nice to see, because Smith is someone who you just can't help but root for. I'd bet that Smith will continue to be a bright spot moving forward.

Aaron Jones- Why do the Packers not give the ball more to Aaron Jones? It's a real head-scratcher of a question. It is abundantly clear that Aaron Jones is the best player on this Packers offense this season. Jones only rushed for 23 yards on Sunday, but was only given eight carries all game. He showed his talent in the pass game, catching two touchdown passes. The Packers will need to play through Jones more often to have a successful offense. Buy.

SELL

Matt LaFleur- I have refrained from putting Matt LaFleur on the sell list for a really long time. But I can refrain no longer. What the actual heck is going on with this football team? For the last three weeks, LaFleur has gone to his post game press conference and stated, "Now is the time where we really see what this team is made of." Dude, it's been three straight losses. This is what this team is made of. The Packers are a soft football team who struggle with mental mistakes, dealing with adversity and a variety of coaching errors. His offense is one of the worst in the league, the special teams unit (which he paid Rich Bisaccia handsomely for) has been inconsistent and the defense (which was supposed to be one of the NFL's best) always looks one step behind. LaFleur needs to step up and take ownership of this team. It starts with him.

Jaire Alexander- Jaire Alexander asked, practically begged, Joe Barry to let him get up and play press coverage against each team's No. 1 wide receiver. Packers fans were all for it. He's paid as the top cornerback in the league, right? So far it hasn't gone well for him. On Sunday, Alexander had his worst day yet. Terry McLaurin consistently got the best of Alexander, including when it mattered most -- catching two passes for first downs on the final offensive series for Washington when the Packers needed a stop. Alexander is paid like a star. He'll need to play like one if the Packers are to turn it around.

Drops- You get a drop, you get a drop, everyone gets drops! (Oprah voice)

Amari Rodgers- What is actually funny is that Packers fans have been begging, for the better part of the last two years, for our organization to find someone (ANYONE) who can catch and return punts sure-handedly. And the Packers coaching staff keeps trotting Amari Rodgers out there. It's the classic "mess around and find out." Well, Rodgers put the ball on the ground for the fifth time in his short career on Sunday. Always late to the party, I reckon the coaching staff will finally pull him from that position, and we'll see someone new out there Sunday. Sell.

HOLD

Romeo Doubs- Speaking of drops, Romeo Doubs had a couple of them on Sunday afternoon. It's frustrating that a young player with so much talent has struggled with drops early in the season. I get it. But the kid has talent. And he's one of our few healthy options at that position, so he's going to keep getting opportunities. For now, I'm putting him on hold.

where do you start?
- MN Badger voice -
You get a missed tackle, . . .
You get a holding call, . . .
You line up wrong pre-snap, . . .
You have close but no cigar coverage, . . .
You have a totally clueless and emotionless look on your face, . . .
One more to sell - AR12. So much more must be expected of a franchise leader. His emotions look like a towel boy, not a qb1. At some point he has to show some positive leadership. His play alone isn't cutting it.
One more to hold - Rich Bisachia. His grace period should be nearing the end. I was very impressed though watching him talk mlf through the special teams penalty scenarios. He looked like the HC, mlf, looked and looks lost.

" I was very impressed though watching him talk mlf through the special teams penalty scenarios"

Yep. At that point in the game it was clear why The Tulip can't make in-game/halftime adjustments where he needs to get 1 or more Packers open while facing covereage by 7 men when he can't even decide between 2 outcomes (take the penalty and have them rekick, or decline and take the field position).

When you get a lot less than you should from an organization, look at the leaders. Murphy and LaFleur. Both have led their respective fiefdoms into contradiction and chaos. That’s it really. Everything else is a symptom.

Rodgers can’t return punts and shouldn’t get snaps in O before Toure and Winfree.

Doubs needs a good pass and to be put into a position where he’s not surrounded. He was actually only credited with one drop by the independent stats people and only one uncontested target. That’s just a ridiculous indictment of this O and his usage.

The Packers will do nothing except gestures and tweaking, the dissension has started to emerge into public view. This is a logical result of the contradictory decisions and actions of the leadership.

Sell Murphy and the Rodgers era, the refusal to can LaFleur and making decisions that are based on air not solid ground.

I’m going to throw Gute into stock way down sector. He drafts, signs and retains with a certain objective, then signs AR to a massive contract without any reliable receivers. If you wanted a game manager, AR isn’t it.

It wasn't Gute, it was Murphy and Ball who resigned AR. Murphy publicly took the credit for resigning AR and Ball negotiated this monstrosity of a contract.

Leaving aside responsibilities for those things, the structure put in place by Murphy is a huge source of confusion and, possibly, the conflicting decisions. That structure with a GM not accountable for coaches and contracts or major roster decisions and competing voiced from Ball and LaFleur through Murphy (conceivably Rodgers too). was and is as opaque as possible and reprehensible in and of itself.

Buy: I'm adding Campell and Walker to your list Gunnar because I think I had Walker on hold and they're working well together now (or at least last week).

Sell: Your MLF pick and add his four-play offensive scheme that supposedly favors the run and complicated diversity that every team has figured out.

Hold: The new O-line looks encouraging, and I think it will improve with or without Bakh. We sold the old line long ago and I can't figure why the coaches stuck with it when we were seeing the problems since camp (sorry to keep bringing this up).

They are not a very talented football team. Players get older and lose effectiveness ( #s12,69,) some are one year wonders( Campbell) some are inexperienced ( Doubs, walker) some are overrated ( stokes savage)
The coaching staff is highly questionable ( unless you’re playing the bears)
And the GM is responsible for fielding all of the above. Oh yeah, some are just terrible (#8)

I think they just signaled that Fields isn’t part of their future and is expendable and thus that they may as well just get him running for as long as he holds up. Then they start selling assets and accumulating picks. A ground floor rebuild is coming to our south. In the long term, that’s not good for us since it may actually offer upside.

Sell everyone and everything before this week, then try to find someone or something to hold afterwards for the Lions game. Maybe we'll have someone or something to buy for the Cowboy game. If not, then crash this team's market willingly. Cut your losses before the Eagle's decimate the last remaining value, whatever that may be.

Kind of tough love but, I'd say you nailed it.

Let's see if they can start improving with the "new" O-line. It all starts up front.

We sold everything to the Cap Mortgage Co. long ago. We have no real room to manoever.

What we now need to sell are the guys who control and they like their paychecks and, thus far, each other.

You're sounding too depressed to get through another 10 games, let alone the next few years. We have to save something for later.

Concentrate on your true calling. The O-line coaching job. They finally have the line you called out from the start. How much better would they be and what would their record be if this line had had time to gel?

Resigned not depressed. To rebuild successfully one has to first remove the cause of subsidence. We are past the point where its obvious that is not centered on the field.

I will cheer up when we start to make positive steps, to address the root causes of the rot and to attempt to move forward. At this point, the path is inexorably down because we aren’t at a point where those that matter are being forced to face up to the real issues. We have no owner to intervene, and the problem starts at the top. Not with Rodgers or play on the field. Those are symptoms of protracted leadership failings and decisions.

So I’m passed being depressed. It’s a waiting game now. Not a pleasant one, but an inevitable one as more birds fly home to roost and fight for their piece of it.

I forgot that we talked about Caleb Jones on the right while Bakh was out, and you suggested Tom after the first 53 was listed. The coaching job they were doing was exasperated with the Newman/Hansen experiment. Still can't figure what they saw. Or did AR like Hansen and they didn't want to upset him?

Just like the stock market, how can we make knowledgeable opinions on buy/sell decisions unless we know the underpinnings of the stock?

While I read that its fashionable to dump on ACR these days, I can't do that without knowing for sure if the offensive woes are due to primarily ACR or MLF? Maybe its both? Why operate a spread scheme when you have WRs that can't separate from coverage? Why go to the gun at 4th and 1 and throw a pass to a receiver that can't "catch a cold"? Davante is not here anymore to execute that play 9 out of 10 times. So, who made that call? I agree with Aaron N, that ONE PLAY made me wonder who is running this team - ACR or MLF? Boy, there are a lot of "Aarons" associated with this team lol!

Sure, execution is a huge, player issue. It ALWAYS is. But, ACR calling out his teammates - while defending his own play at the same time - is not good leadership nor being a good teammate. Until I see ACR play an errorless football game at QB, he is not qualified to make criticisms like that. The head coach should be making those comments. The head coach should be benching players and cutting reps. Maybe sitting Amari from punt returns would be a clear signal in that regard? Heck, even Dan Campbell said he won't play a guy who can't hold onto the ball! Even the Lions HC realizes this principle for god sakes! I don't care if Amari looks like the next coming of Davante Adams in practice - if he can't stop making mistakes during a GAME, sit em. Its not rocket science. Just Coaching 101.

There is so much wrong on this team and organization from top to bottom that its scary. But, as shown with the OLine last week, things can be substantially improved if you make logical changes. Even execution can be improved if you try to not force round pegs through a square hole.

This team can get better if players execute (and stars stop coaching through the media) and coaches coach. As I said above, its not rocket science...

My sells are Amos,Amari Rodgers, and Lowrey. To be honest I'd trade them. It just appears to me, that the secondary is taking a player. And it's time for a new coach. They surly aren't as tight as they should be.
Wyatts time is now. I know that won't happen because of players union and Lowrey's experience.

Sell the entire coaching staff. I would bet they could find unemployed coaches that could do a better job than the existing MLF-approved coaching staff.

Sell Russ Ball. If he is Murphy's heir apparent then we really need to look into the Packers structure documents to fully investigate what happens when the team is bankrupt because that's the only outcome with Ball as the head.

The team is a long way from bankruptcy. They have league revenue sharing, they have a stadium that is sold out forever. They have a revenue stream from memorabilia and from the Titletown District, not to mention the physical assets they. have built over the years. The Packers have a very strong financial statement.

If we actually had real shares of stock they would be worth much more than we paid for them.

Most importantly as a non-profit organization the Packers are heavily regulated at the Federal level to maintain their non-profit status. They are probably regulated at the state level as well although I am not familiar with Wisconsin's nn-profit regulations. If they are similar to New York's or New Jersey's regulations then the state regulations are pretty restrictive on how the Packers spend their profits. Don't sweat the bankruptcy.
Thanks, Since '61

On field “bankruptcy” yes. Off field, that would take a certain negative genius with the assets the Packers have accumulated.

If the Buffalo game goes really bad I believe that the Packers should move on from LaFleur and put Bisaccia in as interim HC. He seems to have established some discipline with the STs and the rest of the team desperately needs to play with discipline. First on the OL as the latest group continues through the season, then with our receivers who are running poor routes and are having trouble catching the ball. Rodgers is accused of holding the ball too long but he needs to because his receivers either are not open or they are in the wrong place. They do not square off their routes which throws off the timing of the play. Bisaccia might be able to get that changed.

The defense is taking bad penalties and blowing coverages. That's lack of discipline on the players and lack of preparation from the coaching staff. Correctable mistakes if they are emphasized.

If they appointed Bisaccia as interim HC he would have 9 games to be evaluated for the HC job going forward. The team lacks mental and physical toughness and I don't think that MLF is capable of infusing either of those characteristics into the team. Bisaccia would have a shot at least to keep the team competitive for the rest of the season.

I doubt that the Packers would ever make such a move and if the Packers keep the Bills game close and competitive or win out right maybe they won't need to. But if the Packers are blown out someone needs to step up and do something. Thanks, Since '61

I was hoping Bisaccia would get the nod from the Raiders and was thrilled we got him. Now if MLF continues his dumpster fire run maybe just maybe in five years they’ll move away from him and I hope Bisaccia is still around when it happens. I see the next V Lombardi in him if someone will just give him a chance with a talented team.

The changes a head coach replacement can make are limited in season. He can change the approach to expectations: what is asked and what will be held to account. He can change the use of the play book and he can change personnel utilization. The main things are attitude, motivation and culture.

Bisaccia would be a good candidate for that in some senses, but then we’d need a true OC. I don’t know who that might be. I don’t see anyone on our staff.

"The changes a head coach replacement can make are limited in season."

Exactly, that's why I don't see it happening any time soon. Same thing with Mo Drayton when everyone was calling for his replacement. Easy to say on an internet comment, hard to find a replacement, and even harder for that replacement to effect change mid-season.

I am curious about coaching replacements when it comes to breaking contracts though - player contracts are not really binding contracts, I wonder if coaches are the same?

Well, it’s about fun—not wins and losses—right Matt?
Drop a pass—smile and drop another;
Fumble the football—laugh and shrug your shoulders;
Lose three in a row to subpar teams—no worries—it’s about fu.
Let’s have fun!!!

Hold: Bisaccia. They haven't been perfect, but did anyone expect the man to turn water into wine this quickly? And the stubbornness of those involved by continuing to trot Amari out there doesn't help; I don't believe anyone else on the roster has experience returning punts, so that falls into the lap of Gute.

Sell: Stokes. Another poster astutely pointed out that he doesn't have a pass defended this season. There are 392 players in the NFL that do, and one of our starting CBs isn't one of them. Amazing.

Optimistic hold: Enagbare. He's getting to the QB more often, and so far he's proven to be a useful depth player.
