Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Packers Ram Their Way Into the Bye

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Dillon / Jones.- After the first two Packers offensive series, I got the feeling that Dillon was the better choice to go against the Rams front 7. Jones was getting stopped cold if a clear hole wasn't there, whereas Dillon could still get extra yards. That theory seemed to hold true through most of the game.

Crosby - Right or wrong, the Packers will live or die with Mason the rest of the way. At this point, I don't think it's the operation anymore, as it looked pretty clean on Sunday. Maybe getting away from it all for a  week will help him clear his head. Let's hope.

Not much to do - I wonder if there will be layoffs in the Rams' scouting department. They only have a third, a fifth and a seventh round pick next season (until they make more trades if they keep losing). In 2023, they currently have a second, third, fifth, two sixths and a seventh. One of the sixth round picks was from the Packers for Bojo.

Turnovers - For the second week in a row, I felt turnovers would be needed to carry the Packers' hospital ward to victory. The fact that they didn't convert even one of their chances against the Vikings still kills me.

OBJ - Great move on his TD catch, but even better play design. They got Amos to bite on a slant route and he should have been Douglas' help in what looked like quarters coverage. Douglas almost recovered in time, just missed tipping the ball by a few inches.

Yosh - I've said before that I had enough confidence in Yosh that I would have had him playing left tackle and move Jenkins inside. He played very well on Sunday against some premier pass rushers, justifying my faith in him. I knew the Packers wouldn't make such a move, but if they had, Jenkins would likely still be playing (polluted mindset alert.)  Oh, and the Packers are 4-0 with Yosh at left tackle. Says Nathaniel Hackett, "One of the most athletic big human beings I've ever seen."

Refs - This crew definitely let them play - even though the Packers spent all game complaining about the lack of holding or PI calls on the Rams' DB's, I much prefer this over what the Hochuli crew does.

Going for two? Not sure I understood that decision. Kick an extra point and it would have been a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter (two TDs needed) instead of 11 (FG and a TD).

Rams - So selling out and signing/trading for big name players doesn't guarantee anything? Good to know.

Third down 3 minutes left - Why pass the ball? Run the ball, kill more clock. Especially if you're just going to try a field goal on fourth down anyway. The Rams would not have had enough time left to score AND try an onside kick.

Al, I respect you opinion and agree with many of your thoughts and observations.

Regarding your comment of SF beating Vikings by running the ball more. I’m not in the “run the ball more crowd”.
Here’s my short list why I’m not:
1. You take it away from a HOF QB who consistently makes big plays when opposing team loads the box. SF has a game manager for a QB and don’t have much choice. Grappollo is normally only successful when he can play action. The best teams have a QB who reads the defense at the LOS and audibles to what has the highest percentage of success. In today’s game that means passing more than running. Ala, Brady, Rodgers, etc….
2. Quick short passes provide similar results. Dillon caught 6 passes for a 7.3 YPC, which I would argue are better then a run, especially when the OL cannot consistently create holes.
3. Mlf teams have 9 losses over the past 3 years, how many do the SF 49r’s have? Results speaks for themself’s.
4. It’s easy to say afterwards to run the ball because the pass failed. But, if you are being truthful with yourself, how many times were you saying run the ball before a play and they passed and made a big play. Those plays aren’t discussed on here. I don’t read statements stating why didn’t they run the ball instead of Rodgers throwing and making a big play. If you criticize one side you should compliment the other and balance it out.
5. Our interior OL, without Myers and Jenkins just isn’t consistent enough to open the required holes to achieve success running 36 times a game. With the current OL, I would bet a lot of money that if we tried to run the ball 36 times against the Vikings we lose more so. Much more likely to succeed with Rodgers making a play. If Bak and Myers comes back this could change and we run the ball more with consistent results.

I don’t believe you will ever see a HOF QB in todays game where they run the ball 36 times. If it happens it’s an anomaly.

I love the physical running game as much as anyone, but I also realize the importance of using your best talent to win games. Running the ball is very important aspect of the game, but the quality is more important than quantity IMO.

Problem was AR going long too often early on (and missing) instead of taking the short gains. Seems like a no brainer to get Dillon a dump off pass and go one on one with a LB. Do they have stats on how successful those plays are?

Dump off passes are a great alternative to running plays. The problem with dump off plays is if the LB’s and/or safety’s are playing tight coverage they can turn them into tackles behind the LOS. Throwing over 15 yards plus will keep those defenders deeper thus allowing for running and dump off plays to be more effective.

It’s balance that makes play calling work. It seems fans want a 50/50 pass vs run balance, but in todays NFL with rules that favor passing, thats not winning football. I realize I have a few down votes above, but nobody has debated my points with any valid reasoning. Even if you don’t complete the pass there is always the chance you get a PI, holding and/or roughing the passer penalty that becomes a big play and extends a drive that might’ve stalled.

They also spread the defense out laterally and force them to play honest in the short zones...even if you don't throw that route, or if you run a draw. It opens up the middle and deep zones.

Agree - the most successful dump-off\check-down pass attempts seem to be when it's the third progression (not the second) and the receiver can get the ball (and some valuable momentum) before the defender arrives. Dillon needs to get momentum to be his most effective.

Back to Murf777, agree that the O-line makes or breaks a RB and play

If they're going backwards with only a 4-man rush, then not only is the RB compromised, but there's at least an extra defender patrolling downfield against the throw.

I haven't had a chance to re-watch the Rams game yet, but I'll be keen to see how many 5+ man rushes they sent (and how often).

In agreement with Murf in that it really does depend on what the D presents you with, which match-ups are available and what the down situation is. Dillon converted a number of late-and-short plays due to YA Contact. Rodgers propensity and proclivity to throw the ball down field invariably influenced this by forcing the Rams to not stack the box (lest he hits on a long pass). That's the beauty of a balanced offense.

Remember too, no Aaron Jones for the Vikes game - that affects game planning and calling.

I’ve been saying this for years and all the stats and common sense in the world won’t change this crowds view. This is a “run the ball” website. Always has been but it’s gotten obnoxious since everyone hear now hates Rodgers also. Prepare for down votes..lol don’t even dare say we might need better/more receiving talent, an alarm goes off at cheesehead tv and Nagler personally hovers his hand over the “banned” button until Al talks him off the ledge(sometimes)

I only add here that Lafleur had both his F-Backs (or move TE) for the first time since the beginning of the season. With a healthy MVS as the second WR, that forced LA to play mostly combo zone as they had to put bracket coverage on both our No. 1 and No. 2 wideouts. This may be one of the few times that MLF and QB 1 had the full range of offensive options this year. And give credit to the O line for giving Rodgers 3-5 seconds for his reads against a very powerful front seven for LA. They came extremely close to sacking Rodgers more often than not. It really was a game of inches on Sunday...

Holmgren liked to get Favre in synch with the short game and it keeps the LBs moving, not sitting in gaps waiting to kill a run on first or second down. Will LaFleur begin to use more motion offense or is Amari Rodgers just not completing the picture?

Lafleur likes to run with his move TE or as he calls it, F-Back. The LA game was the first time he had both of his F-Backs healthy since the beginning of the season. Not an accident that we saw more wham blocking from the line, and having a lead blocker in front of LA's front seven for Dillon made a huge difference.

Yes the Packers had the better game plan vs the Vikings then the 49ers cause we won and the 49ers lost? Running the ball for every deep shot that was missed (which there was a lot of them) and we run the ball would have gotten more yards. Running the ball 25-30 times a game with Rodgers wins the game every time. We don't need Rodgers playing hero ball anymore. This TEAM is built for success.

You are comparing two games with two different teams, different OL and different QB’s as I stated above with Grappollo he isn’t good enough to win without a solid running game. In addition, your point is a small sample size.

You will see more rushing attempts when a team wins vs when they lose because they have to throw more to make a comeback when down and if they are winning they run more in the 4th quarter to run the clock.

When you see the Packers run over 25 times a large percentage comes in the 4th quarter or when they have a large lead. That lead many times is because of the big plays created by Arod throwing the ball. Also, those longer passes, even if incomplete, keeps defenses honest and allows for running plays to be more successful.

If rushing is working by all means keep running, but many times it isn’t working especially with our current OL. Down and distance is a big factor in whether it makes sense. Now with Myers and Bak back and cold weather we are set up to run the ball with Jones and Dillon effectively. I would love to see 25+ rushes. When that happens they win a large percentage, but its more because they are running the clock in the 4th quarter.

Until he's traded he is our best shot at SB this year. Also what is this year's team one of what two or three years, that as you call him the arrogant ego hasn't had to carry and drag the team to the playoffs playing hero ball. Yeah eyes for Adams, has to work on that, but look at Brady Moss Big Ben Brown Montana and Rice, even when Jordy was here. Usually elite QBs and WRs, have eyes for each other, when times need a catch. Sometimes to the team peril, and yeah it's hurting this team in some games. Going forward I'm so happy the team has Gute and MLF, cause both seem to try to do anything to win, where as, I was never sold on either of the former guys in those roles to what it takes to win.

Excellent Murf, very good points. I am assuming you are not discrediting the value of a run game, but simply stating that going with a Run-first, or Run-dominant game plan is generally not taking advantage of GB's comparative advantage. Good food for thought. Good passing attack with the threat of a deep strike, actually helps the running game...and one could argue that the failure to connect on a few deep balls led to Vikings committing more resource in the box against the run.

The only way Matt's "illusion of complexity" works is with a solid, credible run game. I agree with the coach and his 9-3 record is in large part due to success running the ball.

I would like to see more 12 and 22 personnel used with jets, motions, and RPO on rollouts to make the run even more effective. Get rid of handing off out of the shotgun, please.

The run game is a strength of the Packers and imagine it with Myers at C, Bakhtiari at LT, Nijman at RT and Turner at RG. (Runyan or Patrick at LG). Even with the injuries, the back ups have still done well powering the run game. Matt wants OLinemen who are equally adept at pass pro and run blocking. It is why AJD was drafted high. Run/pass balance has been working very well for over 2 1/2 years.

In MM last two years, he threw deep to the perimeter more than any other team. He passed close to 70% of the time. When he ran, it was mostly out of the shotgun. I recall during the bye week in 2017 after a self scout he said "it is clear we have to run the ball more and pass out of play action." He didn't do either and continued to flounder.

I largely agree. The "illusion of complexity" works with a solid (run game) offensive line. If those starting five guys can be relied upon, then the RB can motion out and the TEs can do interesting things. As is, the TEs have to at least chip, the RB has to stay in to block, etc.

I like Dafney, but it is hard to give illusions with him. He is going to block, whether it be a run block or pass pro. [Sooner or later they will let him leak out for a pass ala Marcedes.] Dafney is a better blocker (so far) than Deguara but Deguara is going to get more snaps for now because he is more multi-dimensional.

So my only problem with the deep shots is WHEN they do it. 3rd and three and you throw deep (even if not open) just because you saw single coverage? What percentage of times do you think that work? 20%? Let's say 33% to be generous. That means 7 of 10 drives ended because you didn't just try to get the first down and get 3-4 more plays.

My second WHEN beef is when they spend the first half doing it. Establish the run, make the safeties have to respect it and THEN take some deep shots (but not on 3rd and attainable).

I’ve no issue with a deep shot to open the game, it’s the fact that if there is one there seems to be several with little in between—a. Pattern that can be seen with other types of play this year. Variety, uncertainty are the keys to unleashing this offense.

not to mention controlling the clock. they can't score when you have the ball.

the defense struggled, the lafleur/rodgers offense refused to help them.

the first drive of the second half last week essentially killed the rams. running the ball, controlling the clock.

Run to pass or pass to run debate will go on forever. My belief is when you have a HOF QB you pass to run. Either way, Balance is the key IMO. Also, the reality is the rules favor passing.

On Sunday Crosby was flirting with that left upright on a few of his XP and FG attempts. After each kick I rewatched the snap, hold, and laces and all of them were PERFECT.

IMO there isn't another Packers player who will benefit more from the bye week than Crosby, at least mentally. After the bye hopefully Crosby comes back a new man, FULL of confidence. A week with his wife Molly and friends just may be what the doctor ordered. After the bye if he still struggles I'm not sure what you do.

Passing on 3rd down with a tad over 3 minutes left made me scratch my head too Al. To top it off Rodgers threw into triple coverage to Adams but he still damn near caught the ball! I'm thinking MLF thought Crosby would nail the 42 yarder and not hit the upright.

It's AWESOME to know the Rams as we know them today will basically team, even after the 2023 draft. I haven't heard as much lately from the "Gute Haters". Wait, hold on, could it be, could Gute and his staff REALLY know what their doing???

Right on, Nick. The Gute haters were always a deluded, 12 worshiping, crowd. They're silent now because the team is doing well, but they're just biding their time. If GB wins it all, they'll thank 12. If GB loses in the playoffs, they'll blame Gute. When 12 is (rightly) traded in March, they'll lose their shit.

I've got the popcorn ready. That, a 2022 Lombardi, and 4 1st round picks for 12 and a franchised/traded 17 is going to have Bearmeat in a very good mood come draft time!

If he re-signs it will depend on whom we retain. We have all spent long enough watching teams to know Rodgers can’t win it all without a good supporting cast. That seems to be forgotten. I don’t see any way that this team retains Rodgers and critical pieces.

Rodgers is not in a phase of his career where rebuilding is likely to appeal to him or a team. Nothing is impossible, but this team competing with Rodgers at QB next year is very very improbable. Emotion is fine but football is a professional sport. Money counts and the window for players is short and not guaranteed.

Agreed.

Bottom line is that the cap contraction--that no one could've expected prior to 2020--and the restructuring of many deals (coupled with the drama centering around #12) has accelerated the Packers to this point. Hard to say where the Packers would be right now without Covid, but this point would come eventually.

So I deleted most of my initial comments because I want to work it out systematically rather than just broadly disagreeing: I might change my mind after crunching numbers.

One thing that gives me pause is how much can GB really get for AR next March or April? I guess I think GB will get less than some folks are suggesting. There is a point at which I would pull the trigger on a trade for AR.

Who has multiple first round picks? Jets (#4, #5), Giants (#6, #7), Philly (#9, #10, plus Indy's first if Wentz plays 75% of snaps, so somewhere between #14 and #19), Detroit (#1 plus LAR's first round pick, at present #23).

Would the Jets give up on Zach Wilson, or trade him for a first? Would AR agree to go to Philly, NY Jets or Giants? Which teams am I overlooking?

The teams that have 1st round picks in consecutive drafts? I am not expecting multiple 1st round picks in the 22 draft. Rather 2 in 22, 2 in 23, 2 in 24. Ours plus the team we deal him to...

If we don’t trade him next off season then we have to extend because he’s basically free to go for a comp pick after next season—what he wanted from the rework that got him back in the building. If we keep him, we are going to be doing so without many of the players he needs to be a challenger and some if his closest friends on the team.

I suppose we could kick them all out into the future and be the Rams … selling a decade for one more shot, but the entire approach of the team has been to build a young corps for the post Rodgers era. I think the chances of him playing for us next year are minimal for purely cap reasons alone (ignoring politics). It’s next year if we want a boost to rebuild. After that it is a compensatory pick at the end of the 3rd round at best.

The better he plays this year, the more likely we are to get more interest and draft capital, not to keep him in my view. Emotion is a poor guide here. I do think the cap constriction probably shortened the time line by a year.

One never knows whether those picks might be high ones. Miami ended up with the #3 overall pick in the Laremy Tunsil trade when Houston unexpected went completely into the crapper. Most likely those picks end up being in the twenties, but not necessarily.

We have been punching this around since 2018. Just thinking about it depresses me. Even if (IF) Rodgers does a 'Brady', that is not going to stop the Cap blood bath as dobber points out. I have a very hard time seeing most of the core Packers doing what A Jones did in signing his contract. Pro football players have a short playing lifespan, it's hard to see them leaving any money on the table, even for a Superbowl run. (I know that it happened this season. But the unusual nature of the past season forced the Packer front office away from their mode of operation) And even with the TV money kicking in 2023, that will not stop the negative cash flow for next season. Even with most of the NFL teams in similar situations, that probably won't save this current core roster. (Thanks guys. Now I'm even more depressed if possible...)

It’s what’s been lacking for years. He deserves credit this year. It’s not rocket science. All true. But do not forget the league wide Cap contraction left a number of core veterans from other teams cut in the preview of next year league wide Cap blood bath. To say Gute signed these guys to team friendly deals would be a vast understatement. As usual, the elephant in the room is Rodger's contract, which took up around 30% of the total Cap. Both Gute and Ball have done an amazing job in signing FA talent with that hanging around their finical heads.

Yes, but a rebuilt was coming after 2022-2023 with too many contracts up from the class of 2018-19. Covid just sped up the timeline for Gutekunst. It's ironic, thanks to Rodgers being the primary mover along with A.J. Tretter (NFLPA president) that the league is playing at all. We all forget how close the owners were to shutting down last season all together thinking they could bank the TV money and not pay the players. The only reason the league is not deeper in the red is the players agreed to play keeping the revue flowing. I shutter to think how deep the Cap hole would have been for next year, if it were not for veterans like Rodgers to push for playing even under Covid conditions.

Can you direct me to an article that discusses this? I can't find anything that suggests the league was pushing towards shutting down the entire 2021 season in hopes of banking TV money and not paying players. In fact, everything I can find talks about the great lengths or planning that was undertaken by the league and its owners to ensure games were being played in 2021.

Also, Can't find information about Rodgers being at the forefront of ensuring play during covid. Can only find articles about Rodgers voting against the current CBA, being displeased with the outcome, and stepping down from his role as the Packers' NFLPA representative as a result of that in late 2020.

Any info appreciateed.

Try checking NFL/NFLPA contract pre covid to get a sense of the tug of war between the players agents and the union leadership. Then look at the side agreement between the league and union during the MLB near lockout for how the side agreement via covid NFL with their union. And look for the Tretter statement speaking for mostly the veterans vs agents. The general view was the owners in all sports was for shutting down till both the players, and more importantly the TV nets put their foot down and said no play, no pay.

Nice comments Al, as always.

Just 2 things. I agreed with your assessment of Yosh when you wrote your suggestion. It is no way that there is warranted Jenkins would stay healthy, but if you have that type of player (Yosh) you should go with him (I respect Newman performances, but...), if not for other reason to educate him for the time when he will LT position from David.

Refs - I have only 2 serious issue during the game. First was that choking of Lucas Patrick that went unpunished and second that obvious holding on Lazard deep in the gold zone - remember how Aaron was pissed of and he was complaining heavy to the referee who was standing in front of holding. But you are right. It was much better officiating than it was vs Vikings.

Keep up Al.

Getting to the bye at 9-3 with all the injuries in tow is the story of the year. A couple of thoughts:

* Coaching has been pretty good to get us to this point. Joe Barry has earned his stripes and has the defense playing as a unit. Previous year's we would have been talking about all the missed assignments and confusion - even at game 12. The O-line and D-line coaches have been crazy good.

* Additions to the roster and next men up. Got to acknowledge Gutekunst and the scouts have done their job. Campbell and Douglas are outstanding. The only glaring need is a punt/kick return specialist - next year

* It is not all about Aaron Rodgers. The team is showing that it is more than the sum of its parts. Yes, Rodgers pushes us over the top but the team is better when he manages the game with more balance. Trying to squeeze the ball into a triple covered Adams is his weakness. We could win it all if he embraces this balance mindset.

* Get healthy boys - finish strong.

Dillon/Jones - Jones needs to be used more in the passing game, he is deadly on screens, keep feeding the big man Dillon to soften up defenses. It's a deadly combo anyway they use it but after tweaking his knee i'd rather not see Jones pounding it up the middle against that tough front.

Crosby - Definitely has the yip's, caused by poor protection and bad snaps early in the season, he will get it going and be fine i'm sure.

Rams draft - The Rams and Seattle love to burn those high draft choices, Seattle is what the Rams will be in two years, bereft of young talent with a bunch of over priced, aging vets and no help on the way via the draft.

Yosh -B'Gosh - What an excellent find by Gutey and his staff! Yosh is by no means a perfect player but with his size and talent he has been a Godsend at Left Tackle! Especially with Bakhtari and Jenkins hurt.

Two Points - My only beef with the two point decision is this. Why the hell can't the Packers convert on two point plays when it seems that teams always seem to convert these against the Packers! That is very frustrating!

Great time for a bye week! Lets hope we get Myers, Z, Bakhtiari, King and Alexander back soon!

GO PACK!!

"Yosh -B'Gosh - What an excellent find by Gutey and his staff!"

I'll admit that I was way wrong on him. I was confused as to why the Packers burned a roster spot for him all season a year ago. He looked OK in the past in preseason v. #2 and #3 defenders, but he's taken a massive leap. Credit to Stenavich, here.

With that in mind, Jake Hanson seems to be following the Nijman route this season--PS in 2020, netting next to no snaps at the bottom of the roster in 2021? He seemed to be a long-shot when they picked him, and then took another C this year. Is he the next Lucas Patrick?

"Rams draft - The Rams and Seattle love to burn those high draft choices, "

High draft picks are gold. They often net you good players that you get to keep on the cheap for 4-5 years, and stabilize your roster and salary cap. When you're legitimately one or two players away from being an elite team, and the clock is running out, it makes more sense. But to throw those picks away year after year?

That said, there will be a team out there that throws those picks at the Packers in March trying to take a shot at the prize with #12. Especially if this team continues to roll and ARod keeps looking good.

"Great time for a bye week! "

Great for the Packers, but all the honey-do projects that have been piling up....

This does kind of show us that sometimes when they keep a player there maybe a bigger reason why they keep them then we realize. In the case of Yosh obviously showed them something a year ago which is why they kept him. Now we are seeing why.

"Yosh - I've said before that I had enough confidence in Yosh that I would have had him playing left tackle and move Jenkins inside....but if they had, Jenkins would likely still be playing (polluted mindset alert.) "

I've thought this, too, in retrospect. You never really know. Getting Bakhtiari--and Myers--back will be huge, especially when Bakhtiari rounds back into game shape, but the Packers will end up missing Jenkins, yet, especially in the playoffs.

"Going for two? Not sure I understood that decision. "

The call was confusing, yes. It's less of a problem if you're a team that is proficient at converting 2's, but is there a team out there that struggles more scoring AND defending 2's than the Packers?

"Rams - So selling out and signing/trading for big name players doesn't guarantee anything? "

Honestly, the problem is the guy with the headset. McVay might be buying into his clippings too much. The only thing new out of this Rams offense is Stafford and he's reportedly playing hurt. Don't you find ways to take the pressure off him? Lose Robert Woods? RUN THE BALL! There's nothing creative here: same offense they tried to run against the Packers in January. They tried that WR pass, but that was well sniffed out by the Packers...and that's not creative, it's a gimmick play. Minus two big pass plays, that offense did next to nothing. Credit the Packers defense, but the 'prodigy' McVay needs a serious self-scout at this point.

McVay may well be part of the problem, but I think the root is the ownership seeking attention and success in their new market. The roster in theory comes from the GM with the owner behind. If the ownership gives too much weight and power to McVay, that’s on them, but equally this could be driven from the top down. Any owner insane enough to gamble that highly on his coach’s say so alone is really the issue.

Could it be that Kroenke (Rams owner) saw what Justin Herbert is morphing into and got the jitters?

Possibly not - there's not much dumb luck in becoming a billionaire. As others have pointed out already, he's taking a calculated "win now" risk.

That said, LAR only have circa 5 mill in cap space next year. Admittedly the Packers presently are $-30M, but what exactly is OBJ thinking is the outcome if he doesn't light it up? Might be some new ventilation holes in the locker room at SoFI stadium??

Kroenke took a somewhat atypical road by marrying into the Walmart family. His real estate money was made through shopping malls anchored to Walmarts. Without the rich wife, no one would ever have heard of this scumbag.

So true about the new market, people sometimes don't realize how important it is. Especially in a town like L.A, where people don't care unless its the in thing at the time. The city has lost teams in the past, and with the Chargers also there, the Rams need to make them into the Jets to the Giants, like yesterday and right now they are not.
Look how many times, good old Al Davis leverage Oakland and L.A against one and other, cause he knew the money was there, just not always the fans. So much is riding on this year for the Rams and ownership even more, the Superbowl there they have the "Big Names Super team" and they're all in.
When they flame out it's going to be an interesting off season, because going forward, the Chargers look like the better bet, to win the fans over, even with the former ram hold out fans from the past. What do the owner just have to pay, 600 million, or something I forget what for, maybe relocation fine or broken contract. Yeah I would be motivated too. lol

LaF has always been about putting his best 5 OL on the field, and they must have felt that the stability of keeping Jenkins outside and Patrick in the middle was better than juggling at this stage. Certainly popping Jenkins in at C (because, IMO, Runyan has been solid) and sliding Patrick in at RG where he started all season last year, seemed a sensible move.

2 pt conversation.

The words Always and Never are used a bit much concerning football where those words NEVER hold the truth.

A favor to ask... How about TGR or some GBP CHTV poster that knows how to use Pro Football facts website pull up the success percentages on 2 point attempts and 2 point defenses and post the league wide stats PER TEAM so we can see if the Packers are among the worst or are actually middle of the pack?

Intelligent conversation with facts as a part of the discussion is always better than plain conversation with hyperbole as the entrée.

I wish I knew where those sites are and how to mine the data, however I am a Biological Scientist, not a Computer Scientist.

I just tried that and could find nothing useful. There is one site that tracks two-pointers (for and against), but it uses totally useless data points (success converting, but in percentage, not total attempts & total successes, and success defending, but in attempts per game instead of total attempts per season). Whoever controls that site doesn't know squat about reporting data points. Very frustrating.

The Success Converting numbers do show, however, that the Packers have not completed any two-pointers successfully this year or in 2020. Not sure about earlier years. As you would expect, we're tied for last in the league this year, with 10 other teams. The Cardinals are the only team to not attempt a two-pointer this year.

Pro-football-reference.com has the info.

52 out of 98. Cowboys are 4-8, that’s the most attempts by a team. Philly is 5-5. Most teams have only gone for two a couple of times. Success rate for the league is well over 50%.

My opinion is that a good offensive team should go for two all the time.

Wouldn't red\gold zone conversions ( X-and-goal) cover this? There would have to be correlations between effectiveness here and 2-point conversions.

I'd also look at 3rd/4th and inches conversions - again, reliably getting those short yards when needed would have to factor in here.

FWIW, I really liked that short Allen Lazard shovel pass TD play from a couple of games ago. A variation could be to show AJ Dillon and Jones in the back-field, bring "the goon" (Lazard) in motion and have #17 out wide.

I'd also like to see a separate play where Big Dawg motions across the line, chip blocks, then leak inside into the seam - Kelce did that on the Packers this year and fully pulled their pants down for an easy TD. Lewis has good hands and reach and this is a perfect play for him (motion, sell the block, chip, 3-5 steps then turn and catch).

Dillon / Jones.-
Dillon definitely has been getting better yards then Jones this year for whatever reason. That being said, I'd like to see them find more ways to get Jones the ball in space.

Crosby -
They have live with him. They simply can't make a change at this time. All but one of the kicks made it through. But everyone of them have went left. I don't know if there is a timing thing that is just off which is causing him to pull it? Is there a problem of where its getting placed causing that? I don't know.

Not much to do -
They traded Bojo to the Packers when in my eyes he was clearly the better punter on Sunday. That should speak a lot about their scouting of players.

Turnovers -
While we did get the pick 6. We did get the sack fumble. One dropped intercepting by Douglas could have been a bigger deal in the game. We lucked out that, it didn't ended up coming back to bite us. The drive that Douglas dropped an easy interception they ended up scoring a TD on. They have to come down with the ball every chance they get!

OBJ -
He can still make big plays. No question. But outside of that one big play, OBJ was held in check. Would it have been worth it to bring him in for potentially 1 play a game? Possibly? Maybe it would be different with him in GB. But with what I just saw on Sunday, the big play that he had, MVS can make the exact same play.

Yosh -
I had a LOT more confidence in Yosh after the previous couple of games that he started. He again proved he was more then capable of playing.
So not going to lie, I had thought about if Yosh had kept playing and Jenkins was at LG, Runyan at RG. Jenkins would be still playing. Obviously it was a freak injury and it happens. but this could have happened with how well Yosh has played.

Refs -
Completely agree with having this crew over Hochuli's. That being said, they have to call the choking by Donald. Right in front of the ref and that doesn't get called?

Rams -
We will have to see if anything changes at the end of the year for them. But the best philosophy is still drafting and developing.

Third down 3 minutes left -
I'm find with throwing the ball. If you convert the first downs you end the game your way. The biggest thing is to keep the clock running. But they need to do high probability of completing pass plays in those situations.

Yeah, I think the Rams are a spent force after this year, maybe even challenging for first pick next year, which of course helps them not at all. Welcome to the cellar, Rams! We'll see how well they draw at their new amusement park when they start winning maybe 2 games a year. I wonder if anyone has trademarked "San Antonio Rams"? "Portland Rams"? "Utah Rams"?

The only way they will really be able to improve is in FA. They don't have the draft capital to get a lot of help.

But they didn't make these moves for next year and the future. They made them for now. In the next 6 games or so, maybe they will start paying off. We don't know yet. But the early signs don't look good.

They may look completely different when the playoffs come though. So we will see how it works out for them.

How could that Ref not throw a flag on Donald choking Patrick? I hope the League offices see that and do something about it. I think Yosh Nijman is the unsung hero of our O Line. He has been solid for us, all season long. Yes, we should have run the ball more against the vikings! I now see that Dalvin Cook injured his shoulder and MAY miss significant time. Did the turf in their stadium cause Cook's injury. I did not watch the viking game but saw the Cook injury report on one of those "around the NFL" segments. It would not surprise me if the turf caused Cook's injury. It almost claimed Darnell Savage, when we played them there. Crappy turf, crappy stadium, crappy team. GO PACK, GO!!!

from a different thread...

That was some WWE shit right there, right along with the ref tapping the guy to make him break the illegal hold.

very comical actually, until you realize that this isnt WWE, the action is not supposed to be scripted, and the organization (NFL) is in bed-fully undressed-and rubbing vigorously, with Legalized gambling!!!

The NFL has to get the officiating cleaned up and FAST before this sort of "keep it close" officiating completely soils the leagues reputation as an above board athletic competition.

Right now, long time knowledgeable fans can see the blatant difference in the officiating and the manipulation of game outcomes. I can see this and I have pointed it out on a league-wide basis for a couple of years now. This MUST get fixed and FAST. I cannot stand the product the NFL is trotting out these days with the black and white striped "stooges" running around the field imposing league edicts on individual games simply to keep interest and attention up.

Full time officials under the auspices of a committee composed of league representatives AND NFLPA representatives AND Independent representatives needs to be put in place ASAP.

The rulebook needs to be completely re-written and unnecessary - redundant non-sense needs to be deleted. Modern era areas of controversy need to be addressed clearly and concisely in the rewritten book. Video Review needs to have a focus and not be an "eye in the sky" oversight of all action on the field with arbitrary options on what can be looked at.

I am not the most expert NFL rules guy ever, however I am confident if it were my job I could do it far better than the stooges (both on-field and off-field) currently running around doing Vince MacMahons - err, I mean Roger Goodells bidding.

That's all I have to say about that...

Dillon and Jones - The use of these 2 weapons has not been optimized in this offense yet. There is a lot left on the field each and every week. I would like to see a lot more 2 back sets. Both can catch the ball quite well and both can run inside and outside (although Dillon does not seem to get any chances at outside zone runs or even sweep type blocking).

With Tonyan out it is time to use the bye to get Deguara all primed to step into the Tonyan role for the final 5 games and playoffs. Get him coached up and insert him into the game plan.

I would really like too see this offense move to more 1 and 2 WR looks with Deguara, Jones and Dillon in on 80+ percent of the plays. THAT is December football and Playoff winning football. MVS, Lazard or EQ just do not do enough to justify leaving one of Jones or Dillon on the bench as much as they are and this offense just runs better with a receiving threat at TE (sorry Big Dog, you aint it anymore). More screens, more outside runs with either back, more misdirection in the backfield from 2 back sets, more wheel and seam routes from Jones and Dillon and integration of Deguara into the gameplan and I can see a steamroller bringing home the Lombardi Trophy.

The GBP have run enough 3 and 4 WR sets to know that they can do it when the WR actually get open and catch the ball. We all know Adams can execute at a very high level, the problem is that the other WR are inconsistent at getting open or at catching the ball. The capability is there for the power offense I describe to be successful with this roster as well, but the team doesn't run it enough to iron out the wrinkles. The last 5 games of this season is an opportunity to do just that and position this team for a successful playoff run.

Thats (almost) all I have to say about that.

I think a big reason they have more WR sets with only one running back on the field is to try to spread the field out so the defense can't load up the box. This creates huge holes for inside zone runs and guys like Lazard, EQ, and even MVS can block really well. So, if they can spread that defense out and get Dillon 1 on 1 in the hole, he is more than likely going to fall forward and get some yards out of it.

We complete over 65% of our passes. We are near the top of the league in passing TDs and Adjusted NetYards/attempt. How is this happening if our WRs are not getting open and catching???

The three WR set is our best personnel package, and here’s why: Adams has to be doubled, and you have to keep MVS from getting deep. Lazard, and Lewis at TE, are superior blockers. This gives us a numerical advantage in the box.

It’s been a long time since a franchise has gone so far in that they came out in the underworld for years. Most teams learned from the early cap pratfalls where that happened. It looks like the Rams may end up in a hole deeper than any this century. The Bears aren’t in a great situation, but the Rams are much deeper in the mire.

In both cases, it’s hard to say that it was driven by a nucleus of generational talent either. This has more to do with inept leadership desperately clinging on or the owner trying to cement a fan base after a venal move. For all the Packers have issues at times and an inherently unaccountable structure, hopefully it protects against these types of destructive follies.

We should remember that going into what I believe is inevitably going to be an off season of change and a season following that is the first in a new era. Painful as it likely will be, the alternative is likely far worse. The cap eventually exacts a price that is unavoidable and lingers, sometimes for years.

I certainly agree with your thinking Al and I thought of that when they started passing at that time of the game and was disappointed when they were passing the ball. Apparently, they figured they could get a first down and run out the clock.

Two comments:

Rasul Douglas got the defensive player of the week. Please don't bench him when King returns. He has earned his spot with clutch plays. Rather have a guy who makes clutch plays to put a game out of reach and then gives up a meaningless TD.

Secondly, I like the comment about letting the players play. Too many pass interference, holding and roughing the passer penalties that change the game's outcome.

I love Aaron Jones, an absolutely fun guy to watch play and a fun/great guy off the field. But I just haven't seen it from him yet this year unfortunately. Only 1 game over 100 yards, against the Bengals, and the long run in the 4th quarter is where he picked up most of those yards. I don't want to be a huge negative guy or debby downer because I love Aaron Jones, but it just makes me think. What if we kept Jamaal Williams and Corey Linsley last season and let Aaron Jones walk. The offensive line has held up, but with an all Pro Center holding down the interior line would've been a huge upgrade, and then the 2nd round Josh Myers pick could've turned into something else of value that we desperately needed. Because and AJ Dillon Jamaal Williams backfield with Corey Linsley to run behind is not that much of a difference than an Aaron Jones AJ Dillon backfield running behind Lucas Patrick. That's just my thoughts on how this entire season has gone and how the running back rotation has worked out, as well as the offensive line performance.

Aaron Jones cost just 4 mil per season. Jamal & Corey would cost more tnan 12 mil. Now sit down and calculate...

Aaron Jones contract is extremely backloaded, the last 2 years of his deal he is being paid 8 and 11 million dollars a year, so they could have easily done the same thing with Linsley and Jamaal Williams is being paid 3 million dollars, thats a steal.

We could cut Jones after 2022 with a minimal 6.5 mill cap hit, which is not that bad in todays NFL.

Could trade him too, at that time with a larger contract and depends how his play is not a lot of teams would give up a lot for him, but could get a nice middle round pick. Which if you remember we got him with a mid/late round pick so find another diamond in the rough and get them on a rookie contract. I love Aaron Jones, but I do love winning the line of scrimmage and Corey Linsley did that so it was tough to see him go.

Interesting idea, but Linsley's contract is more lucrative. Also, Jones gives us that change of pace back which Williams would not. The offense as a whole has not matched last year's numbers and I believe the injuries and reshuffling along the line the cause. However, we are still very efficient.

Dillon/Jones - assuming Jones is back and healthy after the bye the Packers need to get the ball in their hands more often each game. They should combine for 25-30 touches per game via the run and the pass. they. have both evolved into playmakers for the Packers and most importantly they can keep moving the chains and chewing up the clock.

Crosby - he isn't going anywhere so the FG unit needs to get better.

Turnovers - I'm confident that someone on the Packers coaching staff knows how to catch a football. Whoever it is have them spend time with the Dbs until they get it right. An alternative would to have the DBs spend with Davante Adams. I would never expect DBs to catch everything but some of the picks they are dropping are gimmes. Maybe watch tapes of Herb Adderley until they get it right.

OBJ - I'm just glad that he chose not to sign with the Packers. He is obviously injured despite his TD catch.

Yosh - I too advocated for Yosh to remain at LT and to return Jenkins to LG. I thought it was a great opportunity for Yosh to get the snaps and experience. Still not sure why it didn't happen. Maybe Jenkins is still healthy if he returns to LG.

Refs - I no longer have any confidence in any NFL officiating crew. They are just too inconsistent from game to game and sometimes from play to play. No call on choking Patrick righting front of the official is unacceptable from any crew at any level.

Throwing or 3rd down late in the game. I didn't agree with it but maybe it's MLF or Rodgers trying to keep their foot on the gas. For years there were complaints here at CHTV about MM taking his foot off the gas late in games. speaking for myself if I was going to pass at that point I would have gone with a quick slant to Adams or a short pass to Dillon or Deguara. It also sends a message to future opponents that we're not going to stop throwing regardless of what the score is.
In the end who knows what they were actually trying to do so I just prepare myself for more WTFs as the season goes on.

As for Rams drafting/trading etc. - the entire organization especially McVay, Stafford and Aaron Donald look overrated to me.

Enjoy the bye week. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Always enjoy this weekly column the most, Al. I said to my wife during the game that if I was the opposing team I'd ALWAYS go for the two points since the Packers seem to allow the play to be practically a "gimme" with the other team just walking in or passing to a wide open receiver. Conversely, the Packers seem to be climbing Mt. Everest when they are trying to convert a two pointer. It's a head scratcher for sure. The Rams "Dream Team" approach has been tried numerous times (Philadelphia Eagles, Olympic basketball squad, etc.) and it always come down to a load of INDIVIDUAL talent that can't play as a TEAM. IMO, these guys are used to being "The Man" at their respective positions and each wants to be the one to make the play, not unselfishly let another guy make the play. Team cohesiveness is underappreciated.

Uhh the basketball “dream team” with Bird, Magic, and Jordan absolutely destroyed every team they played so not sure why you included them

Big Al, enjoy reading you every week. You left a lot on the table to discuss, but here are few things I think about:
The concrete mix...
The Packers have taken their talent, owned their mistakes and have hardened into a physical team. They aren't perfect, but they also aren't a Jello mix which I have thought in the past.
Coach 'em up....
I do believe that the Packers record is because they have superior coaching. I'm not saying they have the best coaches, but the team has responded to the coaches and are playing as a team unlike I've seen in a long time.
Maybe some reinforcements....
The list of quality players that may come back for the playoffs is very impressive. How many actually do, we can only guess. If King, Alexander, and Smith are able to return the defense will be rocking.

There are some outstanding issues like FG/EP kicking, and punt returns being worst in the league. Also wonder how deep the current offensive line goes without reinforcements.
Overall a 9-3 record at the bye is pretty heady stuff.

I don't think the team misses Smith. If he is unwilling to hold the edge, he may not suit up again in the mustard and green.

A part of me hates the bye week as a Sunday without the Packers; but another part of me thinks there should be two bye weeks per season to give the players more time to rest and heal from the strain and brutality of NFL football.
When there is a bye, it sure is good when the Packers win the previous game as they did against the Rams. At least I can savor this victory over the long two weeks until the next game.

"The fact that they didn't convert even one of their chances against the Vikings still kills me."

As with the NFCCG. Sore wounds for sure.

Loved the Hackett description on Yosh. I remember thinking to myself when I saw him standing next to our defensive lineman in his first camp, Man that is one big dude! What if he can become a star for us one day!

1. Yes ! I was against moving Jenkins. Never move an All-pro. OL. 2. The 2 point failed. Yes, I would have just kicked the extra point. Why shift the momentum? 3. Darth Vader play. I say Donald was held. Could have been a flag on Runyan. Replay the down! 4. Rodgers Toe. Throwing on 3rd down. He's the MVP. Might have been an audible.

Before his injury, arguably Jenkins was legitimately in the competition to be an all pro at tackle, at least statistically. If a player can play left tackle well, he’s going to be paid to, regardless of where his current or past team preferred to line him up. Simply not enough Ts to go around in the league. That we appear to have 4 that clearly can when healthy is downright amazing. Bakh, Turner, Jenkins and now Nijman on one team is an extremely rare cluster of quality. It’s not financially sustainable for long, so enjoy the luxury now.

There is no question that Jenkins is a great player. The suggestion was Nijman. First. vs. Stability/ injuries ( IF Jenkins Stayed at LG.) Remember Bulaga playing Lt, before he got hurt. And do you remember Josh Sitton getting hurt at Lt too? If you go around the league. LT has had the most ACL tears. You do realize the OL has the most injuries in the NFL.

LT even more than RT puts players on an island and having to move under pressure in ways that put great lateral and tortional pressure on legs. Yes, there is a higher risk at T, but I don’t think that changed the dynamic.

Still say and think Packers would/will win games easier w/o Rodgers throwing those hero balls especially in first half!

Nope, they serve their purpose of loosening up opposing Ds. However, throwing the ball at the end of the game instead of killing clock was head scratching.

Disagree 100%. But each to own. Rodgers is well known doesn't have to "loosen" up defenders. They all know well what he is capable of!

I agree, Packers0808.
As great as Rodgers is, I hope he's always trying to get better -- including with his decision making.
It's important to emphasize all of the positives that go along with Rodgers -- and all that he brings to the Packers in helping to win so many games -- but without ignoring the negatives.
As we've seen since the 2010 season, it's really hard to win a Super Bowl. It's a slight edge that separates the best team from the closest contenders.
All of our players have to be continually striving to improve in order to put the Packers over the top.
***
It's one thing to send a receiver deep, but why does Rodgers throw it when the guy is covered? Why can't he check down to a receiver who is open?
It seems that Rodgers often makes up his mind to throw deep, and then there's no going back for him. I don't get why he can't be more flexible.

I seem to wince now when we attempt a FG but that last miss may have been wind related. I’ve read on several sites from players talking how the wind was swirling. If that was the case I think our kicking team did fine. I would like to think we will find out in our next game against the bears, but that won’t happen as it will be all TDs and no FGs! GPG!

I had the same thought about the Darth Vader move. The ref is right there. I suspect he was so shocked by the move that he didn't know what the call should be. He's a thought: try unnecessary roughness. Here's another thought, and it has happened before: criminal assault. Just because I stepped onto the football field doesn't mean I consented to someone trying to pinch my wind pipe shut. There is a whole lot of abuse that happens in the trenches but that is a very dangerous move and shouldn't go unnoticed. Brown County DA, where you at? Donald, you are an overrated dirty POS. You ain't no Kenny Clark.

After the Packers signed UDFA Nijman, I saw his size and looked up his athletic tests. He is a elite athlete for his size. For example he ran a 4.82, did 27 on the bench and broad jumped 9'5". The Packers knew he was green playing O line only having played it for 4 years at VA Tech (he was a DL player in HS.

The Packers were patient with him believing he would respond well to coaching. He has.

Yosh is another great find by Gutey and his team.

At 314 pounds! Physically, there aren’t many bodies like his, even in the nfl. He is a true outlier. He is ridiculously agile for a man of his size. The really good news is that he appears to have learned how to play and has room to get considerably better. By all accounts, he’s a hard worker. The best may be yet to come.

Might be a good idea to sign him to an extension after the season at non-starting Tackle-money. Might be a way to get him a little cheaper than a couple of years from now (or whenever his current contract expires...). I know, I know, cap issues. A guy can dream, can't he?

He's got one more ERFA year, then an RFA year where the Packers would need to tender him if they don't sign him long-term. They've got uncontested control of Nijman at an affordable rate for one more year.
