Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Packers Thoughts on March 10 2021

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Tag, Jones is not it:

Well, yesterday's franchise tag deadline means the Packers have gone an entire decade without franchising a player. I'm usually pretty set against using the tag, but in this unusual year, Aaron Jones for one more year at $8M would have seriously tempted me.

Ticket Prices:

Where as they continued a streak with the franchise tag, the Packers ended a streak with ticket prices. 2021 will NOT be the twelfth straight season the Packers raise ticket prices. As someone who likes in the NY area, the Packers ticket prices have always seemed comparatively dirt cheap to me, but of course, you Wisconsin folks have a different perspective on that. Regardless, it's good news for everyone.

Mea Culpa:

In a podcast interview with Peter King, Matt LaFleur took the blame with regards to the Packers final few play on offense in the NFCCG. Says he should have communicated better with Rodgers as the QB might have felt they were in four-down territory and may have done something different on that third down play, like take off and run for the goalline. I personally don't see how in the heat of the moment Rodgers would have changed what he did base on knowing that. Regardless of what was coming up next, he shouldn't have tried to force the ball to a not-open Davante. And in the end, LaFleur's decision to go for the field goal would have worked out with the Packers getting the ball back except for one thing: Kevin King.

Gosh, Yosh:

The Packers had a bevy of injuries on the offensive line last season, resulting in some frequent shuffling of players across the line. But dadgummit (I've never said that in my life), a guy who was on the 53-man roster for the entire season was never given a chance other than some meaningless victory formation snaps. There were at least six "comfortable" wins for the Packers that could have presented an opportunity for the Packers to see him in live action. But he never got a sniff. Do we take anything from that other than the Packers being ultra-careful

A Bunch Less 4 Funchess:

So looks like we will get to see if Devin Funchess can have an impact on the WR group this season. Funchess agreed to a $750K pay cut to stay with the Packers. Surely, the bevy of players that are going to be released as cap cuts influenced his decision. There will be plenty of free agent options for teams and Funchess would be at a huge disadvantage, having only played one game the last two years. He likely would not have received any offers as high as what the Packers will pay him ($1.75M), so Funchess opted for the sure thing and a chance to play with a top quarterback. It's also a smart deal for the Packers, especially if he can contribute as they expected.

The 2021 NFL Draft:

When all is said and done, I'll bet this draft has the most third day picks and UDFAs that go on to productive NFL careers. The data on players will just not be there this year, with the total disruption of how players get scouted. No combine, no in-person visits, no attending practices, no 2020 game tape for some players. Players flying under the radar were becoming a thing of the past, but that will come back to a certain point this year. The smartest and hardest-working GMs and scouting departments will win the day. Let's hope the Packers are in that group.

Draft Guide:

In case you haven't heard (not likely), the 11th annual Cheesehead TV Draft Guide is now available to order. I'm certainly prejudiced as the editor of the guide, but every year I'm more and more impressed by the quality of the product our team produces. If you've never see the guide, you can view last year's guide HERE. If you like what you see, you can order this year's guide HERE.

POLL:

If you could be gifted one new player for the Packers that would start from day one, what position would you choose:

What is the #1 position you want the Packers to address?

I hope you're right about more under the radar players and that Gute and Co. are good scouts since GB has 8 picks in rounds 3 through 7. They will probably sign 19 UDFAs as well, maybe more.

The other side of this is surely not just less players staying in the league due to cost, but a higher risk level with earlier picks?

"...a higher risk level with earlier picks?"

...the necessary corollary to there being more good players later in the draft and as UDFAs.

I’m thinking it has to be. Given this is the time of year where certainty abounds within arm chairs, it’s going to be interesting. One could assume metrics like RAS will be more important where they have data, for players from outside the biggest programs.

This is a year where good scouting in prior years will pay particular dividends. Should be interesting. Then there is the extra year of college eligibility to consider. Will many stay on? Will that vary by position—a different calculus for RBs over QBs, for example?

Going to be interesting at the draft, UDFA and tryout stages. Maybe less difference in those tiers than usual perhaps?

May be hard to do. Some teams consider that confidential data. New York doesn't think it worth the fight. Most teams do share if they have prior relationships. But it's late, and this is something that should have been worked out months ago.

Your second comment is related to the first point. Relying on some of these metrics like RAS score gets us athletic guys but weak football players. I am thinking of guys like Josh Jones and Oren Burkes.

I don't blame Rodgers or Leflueur for anything. I Blame Gute. Sure he didn't play. But his roster got exposed. How many years has he avoided the ILB and DL positions. He went All in for Love! Not the Super Bowl. And Now a simple Tag could have kept the most electric RB since Ahmad Green. Once again we find ourselves looking at Cb. But the reality is. If you want to win. A Gm still has to bring in the most explosive players he can find. Waiver wires are Gutes fix. With that said; I'm going to go against your Poll. Lets forget Need. It's time to draft the electric. Get the game changer. Cobb could return punts. It's time to shock the NFL. And screw up everyones boards. Forget Funchess. We need to get the most exciting players in the draft. A weapon in the hands of LeFlueur , will go much further then Need.

The Packers, unlike a lot of teams, are pretty close lipped about ongoing player negotiations. Given who Jones has for an agent, it's not unlikely they were told Jones could refuse to sign the tag and they decided to avoid the distraction.

I’d say we were out prepared and out coached and that our talent almost pulled us back despite that. To me this game was lost in the first half by Pettine and it was mostly Gute picks that got us the ball before done dubious offensive calling in the second.

I think that we have seen this staff get out-coached in many of the big games these last two seasons. I don't know what we have in Joe Barry, but it is time that our head coach and his staff out-perform when on the big stage.

Agreed, LaFleur has good points, but he’s yet to prove he is a good coach as opposed to offensive mind. There is a big difference. Thus far I e chalked it up to a learning curve, but hiring choices and in game adjustments and calling acumen are essential to success as a coach.

My Man Stock - The Packers were just rated the #1 roster in the NFL. Doesn't mean they are but it's a point that can be made. Just 1 source as well.

They have a very strong roster IMO. LT,C,QB,WR,RB all considered one of if not the best in the NFL at their position. Also all draft picks.

Defense has a top tier DL player, LB, Safety and CB. (Notice that on both OF and Def they have studs at the most critical positions)

They lost numerous players to injury both in the short term and long term including Devante, Jaire, KC,Gary, King,Jones, etc and still won 13 games. That speaks to depth. The sent 7? players to the pro-bowl similiar all pro #'s - More than most if not all (just off the top of my head). They also have done this with the highest Paid QB for a time (still very expensive) Top tier paid Edge,LT and NT for their positions. Oh and have consistently drafted on the back end for 20 plus years.

Being able to name weaknesses doesn't equate to a poor roster, try to name teams without holes/weaknesses. Are the Packers helped by having ARod, sure are but he has also hurt them when it comes to the cap. IMO he's been more than worth it but unless you're Tom Brady no one is signing a contract well below their market Value to help the GM to sign better players. No One - And we shouldn't expect it.

The Blame for the NFCCG loss this year is on the Players, be it through play or injury.
Even last year, basically the same team but DB's played poorly(fooled/communication). Arod with another slow start. Then just give credit to a SF that had everything, HC with a great new offense, talent from years of drafting in the top 5 to 10 that equated into a great team. One that GB's youth, new scheme and HC were just over matched. You can be a great team and still lose.

Not True my Guy, The return is what the use is with the 8.4 Mil this year and a high comp pick next year. For a guy drafted in the 5th rd and all the value the Packers received from him it was a very prudent investment.

As much as I liked Jones, it could be easier get a good back in the draft, especially since we have a Clydesdale. So if we do have any money for a free agent it should be for a CB or DT which are harder to fill in the draft.

It will be interesting to watch Jones' contract situation plays out - and then watch and see if he was really worth it. I don't think he is as electric as Kamara. I don't think he is a guy that you can just feed and not have him wear down. I think that is why the Packers were low-balling the guaranteed money. The Packers are a better team with him, healthy, but my bet is that he misses at least 25% of the games covered by the next contract he signs.

Good job Al, as usual. Not tagging Jones is a mistake in my opinion, unless the Packers know that he would sit out rather than play if he was tagged. Now we lose one of our best players for virtually no return and we've already sent a signal that we are not all in for 2021. We're literally basing our 2021 rushing attack on Dillon's 21 carries against Tennessee! Ridiculous.

Once again we'll be putting everything on Rodger's shoulders. Hopefully we will draft an actual, legit #2 NFL WR. Funchess may fit the bill but he's has hardly taken a snap in 2 seasons. The price is right but will he be ready to play?

Not tagging Jones means drafting at least one RB, probably two. One of those picks which could have been used on a WR, CB, DL or ILB which are sorely needed. RB has gone from a strength of the team to a question mark?

MLF is a standup guy and he correctly took the hit on the play calling during his Peter King interview. There is literally no excuse for poor communication at that point in a championship game. Poor preparation and coaching decisions killed the Packers during the NFCCG. No excuses, it's on the HC.

As for Yosh, I would like to see him play but apparently he cannot beat out the players ahead of him on the depth chart. My guess is that he's a big guy with poor footwork. But until we see him play who can know for sure.

So far, we lost Jones and added Funchess this offseason. That is a huge minus one for the Packers at this point. But it's early in the offseason game. Let's hope that Gute has some moves left as the offseason innings play out. Thanks, Since '61

Good year for running backs. Nijman a no-bend guy, or he would have been drafted. There is no law about calling a Time Out with the game on the line. Rodgers did not rotate his reads or Lazard would have had the TD. The game came down to critical fumbles by a Star player and Redmond"s dropped Pick. They knew King couldn't pull off the perimeter job with his back injury, but the guy they drafted with a Two Pick was not even active for the second half of the season. Player Personnel issue. No SB 4 You.

Nijman is not a no bend guy. He’s a no technique physical freak able to dominate in college by simply being physically superior. Can he learn technique? That was the question. Or did his coaches just let him continue to deliver without messing?

I’m guessing the Packers think he can and is, since they’ve kept him, if so, he had a great deal to learn though. That’s why he’s intriguing. Perhaps the most physically physically gifted T in his class going undrafted ...

Personally I’ve no idea how far he has come. A preseason would help and one last year would have helped him a lot I’d guess as well as letting coaches see what he does in a game situation.

Jackson makes me wonder if he will be back, and if he is, about coaching. Both he, Hollman and Sullivan took a step back to the point where we relied on an obviously hobbled King.

Either they never had it in the case of Jackson and Hollman or I’d expect Gray to have got one of them contributing. This is why I’m skeptical of Gray’s impact. Savage and Alexander maturing isn’t a huge surprise. No improvement by those behind them at least raises questions.

I think it's hard to put the non-tag of Jones into that "mistake"/"no mistake" category until we know what they do with the cap space they would otherwise be giving to Jones. What does not paying Jones enable them to do? TT seemed to like to sit on that money...let's see what BG does with it.

By all accounts, the Packers are still talking with Jones' reps, so maybe the speculation that he wouldn't play under the tag is right-on.

1. Linsley. Elite center.

3. Wagner. Best swing backup tackles since Bulaga?
4. Kirksey. IDK. Looked better at will.
5. Preston? Lowry? Jamaal? RFAs?
5. Many more possibilities.

Tag, Jones is not it:
I have seen the fact that the Packers haven't franchised a player since Ryan Pickett in 2010? Going through it though, how many players in that stretch were really truly worth of being Franchised? Out of any of them Jones was probably the most likely to be franchised based on the situation.

Ticket Prices:
Not going to lie I was surprised that they didn't raise the ticket prices. It just seemed like the norm to do it.

Mea Culpa:
While LaFleur can take the blame all he wants, LaFleurs decision would have worked out, had it not been for a ref deciding to throw a penalty for something that they have not thrown all game long.

Gosh, Yosh:
I expect the Packers to draft 1-2 OT's in this draft. I don't believe they believe Yosh is the answer. Just a stop gap guy until they find the answer.

A Bunch Less 4 Funchess:
By taking the paycut it tells me a couple of things. First it tells me the Packers were going to get ready to let him go. And it tells me that Funchess plans to play this year. The question for me is, will Funchess make the team. Adams, MVS, Lazard are the top 3. EQ is the 4th. After that a lot of questions. I would not be surprised to see them draft a couple of WR's this year. There is a really good mix of players in the draft. I also wouldn't be surprised if they looked at a veteran if the money is right. I think Funchess will be able to compete this summer, but I don't know if he will make the roster come fall.

The 2021 NFL Draft:
Last years draft there were a lot of uncertainties. This year, there are a lot more. I completely agree that this year there will be a lot of day 3 and UDFA's that turn out to be really good. I think this will be a really good year to obtain extra day 2 and day 3 picks. I would not be surprised if the Packers traded back in the first round to gain more picks. Packers are expected to gain 3 compensation picks. So right now they will start out with the original 7 picks and 3 more day 3 picks. When its all said and done I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with 11-12 picks when all said and done.

EQ is nothing if not a question at this point. Only 3 are likely pencilled in on the roster, given health, Adams, Lazard and MVS. Funchess looks probable. Beyond that, it’s a straight out fight from holdovers, draft picks and FAs of all flavors, including EQ. Probably 2-3 spots wide open.

At this point EQ would be the 4th. A rookie could definitely over take him. Funchess could definitely over take him. Or he could take a step. At this point is kind of all up in the air.

I could see them drafting 1-2 WR's in the first 5 rounds or so. Meaning any of them could over take both EQ and Funchess. There will be a lot to be determined between now and the season starts. The draft will have a big impact on it though.

I think Jones would have played for the Packers if the tag were used. The productive playing years for a running back are likely the shortest of any group in the NFL and going without the entire 8 million would be a great loss for him. Would he ever recoup that 8 million after sitting out a year with his later year salaries? That is an unknown.
I believe there have only been about three players who sat out a year with the Steelers running back LeVon Bell turning down the $14 plus million franchise tag. He never had the productivity later with the Jets that he had in Pittsburg and was released by them. The other two players were Washington's tackle Sean Gilbert held out for an entire season in 1997. Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Dan Williams did so in 1998.

...I'll bet this draft has the most third day picks and UDFAs that go on to productive NFL careers. The data on players will just not be there this year...

If Gutekunst moves up in this draft I will scream. If our scouting has done their job, we should be able to find "plenty of talent beyond the tape". It is a good year to be picking at the bottom of the order.

Tagging Aaron Jones may have served our purposes but it would have been unfair to the player. Jones takes a beating and, as a RB, his second contract is his retirement. To delay the payday, risk injury would have been a "shitty organization's" way of doing things. Draft a shifty RB in the 4th, pair him up with Dillon and keep the chains moving.

O-linemen depth is a major concern for this team. I love our O-line coach and the job he is doing. Getting him another stud and development body is money in the bank. I am not sure that I would work past 2 years on some of these project guys. As the players say "you know fairly soon if a guy can play". Besides, if they don't work out, you can always ship off your o-linemen to the Bears.

Great article - love the poll as well. I picked an inside linebacker but not many others did. We have not had an inside linebacker who is totally a game wrecker. And as much as I loved AJ Hawk and Blake - great reliability but most of their tackles were always after they gained a few yards. We need a KJ Wright, Roquan Smith , Fred Warner. We havent had our Urlacher/ Ray Lewis - since we had our Ray.

Maybe the NFL has changed and now it is the outside guys - like Clay 111 - but I would just love to see us hit on and inside guy .

Funchess is a good signing - low risk and we know what we have with Adams, Lazard, MVS, St Brown etc and he can rotate in and if some young speedster who can return kicks - good to bring one of those later round guys in.
I agree that we didnt try to get some snaps to more of the Oline guys other than Runyon - and Njimon is a big boy.

I guess we will see some action now that the cap has been set.

I too like the idea of an ILB, particularly if we could add another stud D-lineman to our front seven. For whatever reason, both Thompson and Gutekunst have fundamentally ignored or undervalued the D-line and ILB positions.

Also agree on the Funchess signing. If the draft or FA yields us a quick slot receiver, this offense will be very dangerous.

Cap went up 2.5 mill and teams have until 3/17 to get under the cap, so we will soon see where we stand with free agents. I guess Funchess has a high ceiling for the money, but I would have liked to take my chances with another same priced FA slot type that could have been available that breaks the LG WR mold. There's always the draft.

Gute will only do enough to get just below the cap in time for the new league year, if he needs additional room to sign a FA it will likely happen the day he lands the FA. He will wait for the opportunity before making the space.

I'm with you on the slot rec in the mold of Cobb. He's a guy that gives the team adjustment/game plan options to take advantage of Chandon Sullivan, I mean mismatches.

Not my idea but I heard it and have been posting on it. Grab a RB/Slot Rec in the draft. Not just a good rec RB but a RB that could be a good slot rec.maybe play gadget as well. Examples that come to mind are Felton and Gainwell. Mike renner on PFF has mentioned this, he also mentioned how amari could be made into RB/WR though used only as a WR in college. It's the future much like the Hback, Nickel DB (not safety), Coverage ILB, jet sweep/gadget player. Possibly 2 birds with one stone.

How about kadarius tooney being your slot/gadget and 5 carries or so a game RB? It would make drafting him if available closer to the right value.

I think it's a class act for the Packers to not tag Jones so he can go where he will. It's a good message for all the other players on the roster that we're not going to hold you down if we can't sign you ourselves.
People work better when they know they are appreciated and treated the right way.
As far as not signing Jones, cautionary tales are Ezekiel Elliot, Christian McCaffrey, and Todd Gurley, plus in the past and close to home, Dorsey Levens and Ryan Grant.
In the NFL of today, there's a quandary for almost all running backs. If they get the ball all of the time, they get injured or worn down; if they share the load with another running back or two, then they're not worth as much money.
I think the way of the future in the vast majority of cases is two or more running backs sharing the snaps. We've got some real thunder in A. J. (Armored Jeep) Dillon; now we need some lightning.

As to the downvoters, I wouldn't want to ever work for you.
Not caring for the person of Aaron Jones, plus no explanation as to why you'd force him to stay. Sad.
Not only bad for society, but bad for business. If business doesn't put people first, it's doomed, and society will follow in devastation. To be miserly is to cause misery.
And, as Scrooge was told in a most striking way, our business is humans. All the calculations with the draft and free agency and systems and schemes comes to naught if a team is petty with people. If any success does come, it is superficial and and unsatisfying.
Herb Adderley's heart was with the Packers over the Cowboys because the Cowboys were too much about the system. and not enough about the players.
For all his flaws, Vince Lombardi loved his players, and the results were legendary. Adderley said he loved his father, but didn't think about him every day; he thought about Lombardi every day.
Love covers a multitude of sins, and strategic mistakes, and makes for champions.

This is pretty complex, so I did not downvote you. One might respond by suggesting whether you would be a good employee.

This is a fairness issue. Well, the draft is not fair. The ERFA system is not fair. Lazard is worth far more than his ERFA money, after all. Franchise tags are not fair. Really, revenue sharing and the salary cap system are not fair. AR's deal is not fair: after all, he makes 50 times the amount UDFAs make, a corollary to the CEO/average hourly worker debate. I am not a fan of mandating fully guaranteed salaries for a variety of reasons. Don't get me starting on the iniquities and inequalities of college sports: why are football players getting head injuries to fund huge coaching salaries and the badminton team, exactly?

Times change and what is deemed fair evolves. The concept of overtime, the 44 hour week, and later the 40 hour week are all as recent as the 1930s. In the end it largely boils down to whether Jones gets $8M guaranteed or perhaps $14M guaranteed. It is largely about whether Jones or some team takes the risk that he gets hurts, eats himself out of the league, etc. That's a first-world issue.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, TGR. I largely agree with you about the unfairness of salaries in the NFL, which does seem comparable with society.
If the superstars of the NFL really want social justice, then make their salaries more comparable to their teammates of all colors.
As much as I'd like to keep the dynamic and likable Aaron Jones, he may only have one or two or three more years of top performance left in his legs -- and I don't think the Packers should take away any of those precious years without his enthusiastic agreement.
***
By the way, I just finished a book about a fairer economy in general, "Small is Beautiful," by Schumacher; and am currently reading, "The Servile State," by Belloc.
I'm really trying to understand how to make things better for the average worker in football, and society at large. Let's not let one bad practice allow for other bad practices, but rather make a start somewhere at real reform.
A great concern is that a lot of the divisions in America these days are being concocted by the wealthy and powerful to distract us from the huge inequalities in income and ownership. It's a manipulation that makes me quite angry.
The vast majority of players and fans actually have common cause in being vastly less rewarded for their toil than our supposed superiors who, after all, still need us.
I don't want anything near strict equality, but the blockers and tacklers who labor in the trenches of life are getting cheated, if not crushed.

Distributism as envisioned by Belloc and G K Chesterton (3 acres and a cow) is not something I learned about. I never heard of Belloc, but Chesteron and Dorothy Sayer are another matter. The mechanisms by which the theory would be implemented sound like they would end up having to be very coercive over time (that is, brute force).

There is the problem of de Solla Price's square root law. In football, I suppose a loose analogy would be that 48 players are active, and the square root of 48, roughly 7 players, produces half the value on the field, with the other 41 players producing the other 50 percent of value on a sliding scale. Those 7 members of the square root group want to get paid more than those who belong to the masses.

That's the formalization of the adage that if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. I asked my son two days ago to give me a lift Wednesday Evening so I could drop my car off for an oil change and brake pads. Let's just say I still have the car and I will call my brother Thursday morning (single father of 5 children) to do this favor: he's busy but I have something close to a 100% chance of him finding the time and remembering to do it for me.

There has been some improvement of late. I like the fairly new tackling rules, health ins. and pensions for retired players. As far as college, I have always been very respectful of top football programs that have a high graduation rate for their football players(Alabama, Ohio St, Clemson). All athletes get scholarships, but should also receive tutoring, and proper guidance of life after football. A former student of mine from Union City Josue Matias (LG for the 2013 Fl. St NCAA champs) did not make it to the pros , but he had a degree which enabled him to get hired as the strength and conditioning coach at Texas A& M.

How about all scholarship athletes getting a stipend of $10,000 to $20,000 per year? They could take less classes during their season of sports but attend school in the summer.
Also, any athlete receiving a scholarship -- even if he leaves early for the pros -- should be encouraged to come back to school for free to finish his degree.
There should be a limit to what college coaches can earn at colleges that take taxpayer money -- as well as college presidents and other administrators.
These colleges should also be required to fund some measure of student loan forgiveness, and to reduce tuition to avoid huge student debt in the future.
In general, the public should have much to say about public colleges as far as how they are operated financially and what they teach, as well as how they treat their athletes. Or else let's privatize all colleges for them to compete more fairly for students and student-athletes.
Though it's not up to me to decide, let's have more discussion about such things by average Americans, and more of their involvement.
We have a huge generation of baby boomers entering retirement who could share their experiences. If we could bring back some of the idealism of the 1960s while learning from the mistakes and moderating the excesses. . . .

Chesterton is one of my favorite writers, and I'm looking forward to reading again a book of his on economics, "The Outline of Sanity."
A couple of modern writers on the subject of distributism are John Medaille, Allan Carlson, and Joseph Pearce.
As far as I know, there is no detailed program for distributism, and its proponents would abhor coercion.
What it means to me is rewriting our business laws and tax codes to favor small family businesses over huge corporations. In cases where big businesses may be desirable, it means employee participation and profit sharing, and even a measure of ownership.
It means giving the average American more real opportunities at economic independence in a nation in which it seems a very tiny few own almost all of the property of production.
It means saving America from socialism by reforming capitalism. As Chesterton said, in paraphrase, private capital is a good thing if only more people had some.
***
As in the case of player rights in football, it's a matter of having a serious national discussion and starting to implement some measures that give incentives to small businesses (including farms) while protecting them from predatory monopolists.
It's also about protecting employees from the abuses of employers, including the censorship of free speech and even cancelling their jobs.
Also, we can still greatly reward talent and initiative and tenacity in America. It's not about mandating a strict equality of wealth, but about rejecting the massive inequalities of billionaire domination.
***
An example of reform in the NFL would be partially guaranteed contracts for career-ending injuries: perhaps 50% of the first year of the contract, 30% of the second year, 20% of the third year, etc. (not counting against the salary cap).
The players could also look out for the well-being of stadium workers, and require that NFL merchandise be made in America with a minimum wage of $15 per hour.
Rather than allowing ourselves to be divided by the manipulation and intimidation of manufactured outrage, these kinds of reforms would help American workers of all colors for a revival of the middle class and a shared prosperity of human dignity.

Remember how Rodgers wasn't in favor of the new CBA Players Union Contract Terms.

He was trying to somewhat level the playing field, look out more for retirees, more of the long game but was IMO over ruled by those with less understanding of the overall implications looking for the quick return for individual benefit. Doesn't mean they were wrong but these rules are agreed upon by both sides so to blame players for making so much or owners for being too business focused is unfair. It's like blaming us taxpayers for taking advantage of the rules in place, voted on by the people we chose to represent us, to save money.

Hey, CoachDino, It would be interesting to learn more about what Rodgers was thinking when it came to the terms of employment for all of the players of the NFL.
It would be great if he was was looking out for all the players in the league over the long term. He seems a thoughtful person, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had a vision for the players that was well-intentioned and intelligent and insightful.

Whatever the reasons, it seems the NFL players have a much worse deal than their counterparts in the NBA and MLB.
I would guess a lot of the players in the NFL didn't really have much say in the matter.
I agree somewhat that in general we get the representatives we deserve, but I also think that oftentimes we don't have many good options as far as politicians and policies.
I also agree that we have to make the best of the current situation with its flaws and faults, looking out for ourselves as well as trying to help others.
All the while, though, we can all try to do the best we can to make things better, however little it may seem. A lot of little things can make for big changes.
***
Today, I was looking at a newer book entitled, "The Coming of Neo-Feudalism," by Joel Kotkin. It's hard to tell if it's good or not, but it certainly seems intriguing.
As a break, I'm interested to see if Badgers basketball can beat Iowa after two recent losses.
Last night, Coach Gard may have played it too safe in protecting a lead that almost slipped away. In any sport, it's a delicate balance in being properly careful with a lead while still being aggressive enough to keep things flowing positively.
Whatever you decide to do, CoachDino, have a great weekend.

I too think that this is a class move by a class organization. I also agree that big contracts on RB's is very risky business - as you have pointed out. To compensate, the Packers need to draft well and often for future RBs. I don't think we did that in the past. More important, we need to keep our O-line strong because that it is where it starts.

As for the down votes, I hear you. It is unfortunate that respectful, well thought-out comments are treated as such. Rest assured that it is a few who behave this way.

“If you could be gifted one new player for the Packers that would start from day one, what position would you choose?” Doesn’t this have to be QB? If he or she starts from day one it means he beat out a seasoned backup, a 1st round draft pick, and the reigning MVP. Sign me up for that!

I’m quite happy with Rodgers’ standard of play from last year. For me it’s the biggest marginal difference at a position.

Clark Kent didn’t register to play this year, so I went CB.

Jones will be replaced by a bargain. Dillon will be fine if there is blocking.

If Yosh hasn’t convinced the coaches that he deserves a chance to get Rodgers hit, that’s fine by me. That’s why OL is my vote for most critical need.

Funchess is a big, proven vet. All 5 of our top WRs are vets. Maybe we won’t have to line up any UDFA rookies this year.

There is plenty of blame to go around in our loss to Tampa, just as there would have been lots of shared credit if we won. The mark of a champion is what happens AFTER they get knocked down. I like our chances of getting back to the championship game again.

It is true. It is pretty succinct. But it is followed by GB should draft an offensive lineman in the first round. Not so clear and it does not necessarily follow.

Assuming King departs, and maybe even if he stays, a case can be made for a CB in the first.

I haven’t said we need a first round OL. I’ve said the #1 priority is protecting Rodgers. It’s more important than a corner, IMO. If we protect Rodgers, and give him time to do his job, and open holes for Dillon, we’re going to move the ball and score points and win games even if Josh Jackson is our starter at CB.

There are CBs we could get after the first round, and there are plug and play tackles we could get after the first. It’s too early for me to say I’d take a certain position or player first, but it’s totally obvious to me that our best hope is a healthy Rodgers with time to do his job.

I know and I acknowledge I got lazy: once I was in the Reply to Comment box, I can't look back at exactly what you wrote, but I could have opened a new tab and looked it up.

There are some good looking CBs projected for the 2nd. Plug and play tackles come usually in the first or early second, with the exceptions like Bakh cropping up from time to time.

It would be hard to pass on Asante or Newsome though Newsome at one point was mocked well into the 2nd round. One of them ran a 4.31 forty at a pro day, so probably not going to be around at 60. Darrisaw and Cosmi might be hard to pass on as well, but some have this Vera-Tucker lasting until late 2nd.

I can see Turner and Jenkins at OT. I don't like that much. I can see Hollman and Ento fighting to replace King, and though I like them both I don't like that much. I think Hollman/Ento scares me more.

Love that you mention Yosh. Ive been asking about him forever as where he's at makes a great deal of the why certain moves are/aren't made.

great point on not getting him some PT as well. Yes, he was a UDFA and a development player, cool. But what's the process in getting him ready for a bigger role? By keeping him on the 53 it means they have bigger plans for him or why not develop him on the PS. Part of that has to be PT in season.

Andy Herman sited Inside Information about Jace. So seldom so we ever hear about "inside information" now days. Is the packers locker room/Org very good and keeping everything in house and not talking to media? Is this the whole league now? I do know that practice access for media has been cut more and more over the years. No One should expect the HC or any one to say things on camera that's detrimental to the team but man it seems like if the coaches don't say it on camera it doesn't get outside the building.
