A Just Early Enough Offseason SImulation

A hopefully not to far off prediction of the offseason.

Whelp. Here we are again.

The offseason has come again, on the heels of one of the most devastating losses in franchise history. The Packers fell to the Bears in a 18 point comeback, a loss that will have far-reaching ramifications. Jobs are at risk, the future is cloudy, and your Green Bay Packers are at a crossroads. Enough about that though.

Way back in the ancient, bygone era of July 23rd 2025, I ran a little experiment. It was a way too early simulation of the 2026 Offseason. The players had only just gotten back to training camp, Micah Parsons was a Cowboy, and we had no idea what this fresh new season would bring us. We've emerged on the other side of that season, certainly not unscathed, but still here. We've gotten a few glimpses of the mountaintop, but it remains elusive.

My experiment in the summer was, brace for it, flawed. Turns out, it was way too early. Who knew?

Obviously at that point, we did not have Micah Parsons. We still had a first round pick to play with in the draft, and a bit more money. Some highlights from that article were Elgton Jenkins and Josh Jacobs cut, a Rashan Gary contract restructure, losing Christian Watson, signing Kendall Fuller in free agency, and a first round cornerback.

This time around, my virtual Packers have less room in salary cap, a lack of first round picks, and an increased sense of desperation.

First up: a couple of ground rules. Last time, I used Spotrac's excellent offseason simulator for the contract side of things, and PFF's mock draft simulator for the draft. Both are excellent, but I disliked having to use two different sites. This time, I'm using Pro Football Network's simulator, which allows you to do both things, plus a little extra.

Next up: for the purposes of this exercise, we are going to assume the status quo continues in the coaching staff. That means Matt LaFleur and the Packers are able to reach an amicable solution on a contract extension, on which negotiations have already begun. Jeff Hafley returns as defensive coordinator, and Adam Stenovich is the offensive coordinator. I did it this way for the sake of simplicity (e.g. not wanting to research the draft preferences of multiple coaching candidates), but also because I do think it is the most likely outcome.

Matt LaFleur is, in all likelihood, returning. That's just a statement on the odds, and not what I necessarily think should happen. Jeff Hafley has interviews set with multiple teams, and it's no 100% lock that he does actually get one of them. He's a hot name in this coaching cycle, to be sure. But remember that teams generally tend to lean towards hiring offensive coaches. And on the defensive side of things, Hafley does have a fair bit of competition. Among others, I think Jesse Minter, Brian Flores, Chris Shula, and Vance Joseph are in competition with Hafley.

Next up, this is a simulation of what I think the team is going to do or want to do. It's not what would necessarily do.

Let's get into it.

First up for the site: Finishing the playoffs. In the NFC, the Bears continue to shock the world, and knock off the Rams. The Seahawks come out victorious over the Niners in what I'm sure was another tough, gritty entry into the lore of that rivalry. They end the Bears' magical run there, and ride their Home Field Advantage into the Super Bowl. In the AFC, Josh Allen takes out the #1 seed Broncos, while the Patriots manage to beat the surging Texans. Imagine this AFC Championship for a moment. The Bills, finally have their time to shine, and Josh Allen can win the AFC. Standing in their way? The demon in their particular closet, the New England Patriots, with a shiny new franchise QB at the helm. The Bills come out on top though, and the Super Bowl is set.

In the end, the Seahawks are victorious, and the final bow is put on the 2025/26 season. As the Packers begin the offseason, here's a look at how their (and our own) salary cap looks.

The Packers start $21,158.858 over the salary cap, so we've got some moves to make. Luckily, we've also got some very obvious candidates. We start by cutting Elgton Jenkins ($20 million savings) and Rashan Gary ($10.9 million savings), two of the moves we've been anticipating since the season began. We also cut Trevon Diggs ($15.5 million savings), hoping to bring him back later at a smaller number. I also cut Brandon McManus ( $2.03 million savings), following a rocky season at kicker. All that together brings the Packers to a positive $27.3 million in salary cap room. We aren't done yet though. By restructuring the deals of Xavier McKinney ($5.9 million) and Josh Jacobs ($4.7 million), our total cap rises to $38 million. Not to shabby, but we've got to spend a decent chunk of that right away.

The Packers have a lot of players that are about to be looking for new contracts. First up, a couple of the players that I decided to let walk away without a fight. Those include some of the expected names. Rasheed Walker, Romeo Doubs, and Malik Willis. Kingsley Enagbarre also walks, as he was just a tad too expensive.

I negotiated out a contract extension with Sean Rhyan for 3 years, $19.7 million dollars. Rhyan slides in and looks to contribute, likely with the inside track to be center next year. Quay Walker also cashes in a 3 year, $29 million contract, and stick around on the defense. We also kept Emmanuel WIlson, Lucas Havrisik, Bo Melton, and Brenton Cox Jr on small contracts. We also keep Trevon Diggs in town with a near-minimum 2 year, $6 million dollar deal.

All that leaves us entering free agency with $12.9 million in salary cap room. Maybe enough for a single free agent, or two small ones? Let's see at what we get. Spoiler alert: there's not much.

In what has become a recent trend in the league, the quality of free agent classes are shrinking, as teams are getting better and better at manipulating the salary cap to keep their talent in house. There are still some interesting names out there, even if the Packers wouldn't be interested in them: Aaron Rodgers, Trey Hendrickson, Khalil Mack and Travis Kelce.

There are a couple of free agents I considered trying to bring in. Jon Franklin-Myers or DJ Reeder to help out the defensive line. Wyatt Teller or Joel Bitonio at guard, both from the Browns. Johnathan Jones at cornerback.

I think it's most likely, in this scenario, that the Packers would sit ont heir hands. We've seen them do this before, when money is tight, and there are still extensions to hand out to the likes of Tucker Kraft, Devonte Wyatt, and a big decision on LVN's fifth year option. All that affects the salary cap this year.

So, we move on to the main event: the NFL draft. We've got big holes to fill at CB, DT and along the OL. Plus, some needs at TE, LB, QB, and Edge. Let's see if the draft gods are kind to me.

As it happens, they are. There are a lot of GB's needs available here, between plug & play options at CB and a lot of potential in Georgia's Christen Miller. Ultimately, we'll take Arizona State's Kieth Abney to be an instant starter on the defense. In the third round, I took Dominique "Big Citrus" Orange, to be a big answer at nose tackle for the Packers moving forward. Drew Shelton from Penn State is a tackle with positional versatility, right up the Packers' alley. In round five, center Jake Slaughter falls into my lap. Slaughter was thought of as a first round talent last summer, but has had a bit of a disappointing year. I've got no problem taking a flyer on him here. There's a similar story with my next pick in round six, Penn State QB Drew Allar, who I take to hopefully become the backup QB. The Packers have three round seven picks due to comp picks, and I use them on edge Cameron Robertson from SMU, CB Ricardo Hollman from Wisconsin, and TE Riley Nowakowski.

That's the 2026 offseason wrapped up! Al that's left is to let the simulator tell us how the 2026 would shake out!

Oh well. Better luck next year, right?

I see a lot of pie in the sky with this article.

I will say one thing. The parsons Project has failed the first year. We gave up a lot to get the 7th seed and lose the first playoff game. We could have done that good without him and had more money to spend in 27 and 28 and first round draft picks.

Oh by they way the ripple effects go onto next year because he probably will not be available until after week 4.

Not a failure at all. I would say an incomplete grade. The defense was playing great before he went down and the team was a top contender. Injuries happen and you can't say something is failure because of that in the sport of football.

Starting next year the Packers will be a top 5 contender.

I see what you are saying. I said it was a failure for the first season. When you go out and get a guy like that and give up that much success is making it to the SB. Injuries do happen that is why you do not give up that much for one player. And yes you have to look at injuries.

That is the point I have made from the trade. And yes that does not mean he will not pay off in future years but right now we only have one season to look at.

We saw the difference he made when he is on the field. Sorry but a player like that puts you over the top and don't come to teams who draft in the 20s. Fans complain because the Packers did too much draft and development and the moment they make a splash move for a HOF player they are criticized for that too. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I get winning is the ultimate measure but I can't complain for a big swing that fell short in its first year because of injury. That is just shortsighted.

The defense was great with him and without him we didn't win a single game.

Very odd to consider that a failed player.

Did the Packers improve with him? No worse record and 7th seed like last year and lost first playoff game like last year.

Now lets look to the future. In 2 more years lets see what the Cowboys draft choices do and how the team gets better. How are we going to get better?

Short sighted fans.

This is sarcasm yes? Parsons is four time all pro. Williams is one time all pro three years ago. Williams also has one year left on his contract so no guarantee that the Cowboys get any more than a year and half play from him for a first round pick.

Legitimate. We could have gotten the 7th seed without Parsons. Or without our first round pick. Belton, in the 2nd round, helped. The rest of our draft, not so much. Of the FAs, Parsons helped a lot when he was on the field, and Banks did a solid job after a slow start.

We have two key pieces leaving on defense, and six on offense. That's 8 guys that will have to be retained or replaced. And that's before we start cutting guys we think are 'no good' or 'not worth the money'.

I'd try to keep Enagbare, Quay, and Rhyan. That would still leave 5 holes.

I don't see Gary has an easy cut option. $17M is a lot of dead cap space and you will need to bring someone else in. Same with McManus. I know right after the game the emotional move is to get rid of him but we saw bad runs with Crosby to have them turned around. I don't like McManus, I think he is a questionable character, but you better have a solid option before you just cut him. Jenkins is gone but the others will be interesting. They could rework Gary and others as well. They could even convince Love to rework his contract and guarantee him more down the road.

Will be an interesting off season but this isn't a team that needs to be blown up and start a new. They have a great deep group of pass catchers. They have their Edge players and got improved play on the DL as well. The OL will need some work but they have some pieces to build around there. If it wasn't for injuries I believe 1000% this team would still be playing and probably hosting the Rams. Bad luck happens in sports, even more in a sport that uses an oblong ball that bounces funny.

" I don't like McManus, I think he is a questionable character, but you better have a solid option before you just cut him. "

He was lights out in in 2024, and then regressed to about where he was in the three seasons before that in '25. The league has become one that reduces the number of kicks, but still expects their guy to hit regularly beyond 50. What we saw from McManus in '25 is who he is.

The Packers can cut McManus, promote a guy like Havrisik (or some other street guy) who has a bigger leg and is comparably accurate, and still end up on the plus side in cap and probably points-wise. I would argue that, unlike other positions, there ARE NFL quality kickers lounging around on practice squads, and unless you happen upon a Ka'imi Fairbairn or justin Tucker, you should never have to pay much more than league minimum for one.

Surely the cost will be $8.5m for a 2026 post June cut, compared to his $31m cap hit in 2027, if he is retained then (he won't be).

No way they cut him before June 2026, as it makes no sense.

Interesting that this shows Gary could be retained for what amounts to a $2MM difference; although that doesn't spell out what else the contract renegotiation costs. You can't replace him for $2MM (provided he actually tries)

Your Elaborate plan is just wrong.

First a little history-
TJ Slaton signed a 2 year 14.1mil.
Wyatt should not exceed his.
Myers= when the Jets signed him 1 year for 2 mil.
Myers current is a 2 year 11mil.

We start by cutting
Jenkins - 20 mil- Wrong Rework??
1. He can play LG yet. And back up center.
CUT BANKS instead! He 'll never be a All-pro
(Don't pay him like one) It's OK to cut both!
Rashan Gary 10.9 - Yes - Nick Perry got cut
And I'd give the money to Quay Walker.
Taking plays off doesn't work!
Trevon Diggs. 15.5 and bring him back.
but that 2 year 6 is a No way. Try 10 mil. year.
Mc Manus is a cut. - You reward Clutch.

X McKinney and Josh Jacobs 4.7 restructure
X McKinney - Yes
Jacobs 4.7 - No.
RESTRUCTURE. Jordan LOVE.-
Rodgers RESTRUCTURED FOR THE STEELERS
and a better offense!

Rasheed Walker , Romeo Doubs, Malik Willis, Rhyan.
All could be resigned if Love gives in.
Why let them walk away like Myers?
Enagbarre can walk. Period.

Darious Slayton is a WR. Why would his contract compare to Wyatt's? Wyatt is the guy who creates the inside pass pressure. Karl should be in tandem on passing downs running the stunt games. I keep Enagbare on a fair deal. He hustles. Quay walks as I still feel he was the mistake of the 2022 draft. Watson @ #22 and you keep the #53, choosing Tre McBride ( ALL PRO TE) and I had #59 going to Abe Lucas( Starting RT for Seattle). He grabs Rhyan and we both bitched about the flyover on Kerby Joseph. Does this guy even scout the Big Ten
which has proven to be the superior conference for pro players? He was the SE section scout and I cannot recall any blue chips he culled from those swamps. Diggs? Why didn't he play more than a couple snaps vs. the Bears? They have better information regarding Jenkins physical condition, so he may come back on a reasonable incentive-driven deal. There are better Centers in this draft than Rhyan. Golden replaces Doubs and there was no CB taken with the three pick going to a gadget player. Maybe they move on Asante Samuel,Jr? They likely will drive cash down the road, refinancing McKinney and Jacobs, Love. Sorrell replaces Van Ness in any competition for the starting DE. LVN may best retain value as an inside guy. No 5th year extension, obviously.
LaFleur wants a power gap team, but doesn't have guards who can pull and zero Fullback to be the lead dog. Kyle Kuszczyk put the team on his back last weekend and set a dominant tone with McCafferty, blowing people out of their way. They didn't miss Banks , one bit.
Cause and effect. This brain-trust does not inspire confidence. Another year of this bullshit may be too much to bear and I've been consciously backing this team since 1959.

And if they let Quay Walk. They're screwed.

It has been reported that Quay Walker had an extension presented to his agent mid-year, if that is really the case their is little chance he is back. First they denied his 5th year option and his not accepting the extension probably means the number the team has assigned to him will not work. He has progressed some this season but his coverage grading is poor even with a high RAS number. Everyone knows you can't teach speed but it appears after 4 seasons you can't teach instinct as well and coverage is a huge part of being an NFL LB.

Gutekunst has done a good job acquiring people. I'm just trying to point out that we already have six holes on offense. On defense, we only have two (Enagbare and Walker) unless we start getting rid of guys because they aren't "good enough" or "overpaid".

Six draft picks, two between about 50 and about 85. A little bit of FA money. What's the plan to replace these guys?

McKinney was needed

"MLF developed Willis."

Can we put this narrative to rest already?
Willis was in town two weeks before he played the two games last season that started the mythos. Maybe LaF is good with QBs, but please don't tell me that LaF is such the QB whisperer that he "developed" Willis in two weeks. I'm sure Sean Clifford would like to know how he missed out.
Give LaF credit for writing decent game plans and not ruining Willis.

The premise of this whole article is that the coaching staff stays the same, status quo is what I think he said. That's where this prognostication begins and ends for me. The entire article is moot when considering it will most likely be a rinse and repeat of this year without any sort of shakeup with the HC or any assistants. Plug in all the draft picks, cuts, and FA signings you want, if MLF and company are the front men on this effort, we likely see the same result or worse.

Status Quo = Sweeping it under the rug instead of cleaning up the mess straight away.

It's a thought exercise.
If you switch out the coaches the personnel/scheme issues become unprojectable.
Enjoy it for what it is.

Why is it most likely a rinse and repeat? There are multiple areas where we could improve. You're assuming nobody has a better year next year. Golden? Reed? Kraft? None of those guys will have a better 2026 ?

9 teams have fired a coach this offseason. How many of those do you think will be in the Super Bowl within 2 or 3 years?

I think working to improve is a better strategy than starting over. I certainly see ways we can put together a stronger team next year. But if we just tear it down to start over because we THINK that MAYBE the new guy will be better.....that's a mistake, IMO.

"The odds of LaFleur, the Green Bay Packers’ head coach, and his team losing two games to Chicago and another to Cleveland when they held substantial late leads were 1-in-250,000."

Oh boyyy...

That’s the odds of the Packers team . Considering MLF is coaching said team it’s more like 1 in 2 .

“Positional versatility “ = mediocrity at numerous spots. But then again, I’m cynical.

We’re not that good. Injuries are an excuse. Every team has injuries every year. We might see improvement in some and others may be lost for the year. The overall talent is not good enough. I actually think MLF has overachieved the talent he has been given.
Wake up, 8 years into the Gute era and we’re not better than when he started and yes I know we were 6-9-1 and then went to 13-3. Look at who we drafted and the free agent signings and tell me that was because of Gute.

We have to get better talent and depth. That’s not gonna happen until we get a new GM in my opinion.
