A Look at the Packers 2020 Midseason Awards

The Green Bay Packers have played half of their 2020 NFL schedule and the team is off to a strong 6-2-0 start.

The Packers are 4-1-0 on the road and 2-1-0 at Lambeau Field. That means they still have five home games remaining on their schedule which should give them a further edge in the season’s second half.

Here is a look at the Packers at the halfway mark of the season. We will hand out team awards and examine the Packers performance in the first half of 2020:

1. Most Valuable Player: QB Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is off to a fantastic start to 2020. Through eight games, Rodgers has thrown 24 touchdown passes and thrown just two interceptions. His quarterback rating of 117.5 is the second highest of his career behind only his first league MVP season of 2011. His 2020 rating is higher than his second NFL MVP season of 2014.

Rodgers seems much more comfortable and confident in Matt LaFleur’s offense in his second season working with his current head coach. Rodgers knows the playbook and just seems to be having fun playing football again which is good news for the Packers and bad news for the rest of the NFL.

Rodgers has overcome injuries that caused Davante Adams, Aaron Jones and David Bakhtiari, the Packers three most talented offensive weapons outside of their quarterback to miss significant playing time. WR2 Allen Lazard has also missed several games this season. Rodgers seems to be unphased by it all and continues to play well and put up points.

Through eight games, Rodgers is not only the Packers MVP, but a finalist for his third league MVP.

2. Biggest Disappointment: OLB Preston Smith

We all knew 2019 was a career year for Preston Smith, but the drop off in his play this season has been a big disappointment for the Packers thus far.

In 2019, Smith had 12 quarterback sacks, 56 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 23 quarterback hits. Through the first half of 2020, Preston has only 17 total tackles, one tackle for loss and four quarterback hits.

Yes, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has had him dropping back in pass coverage more often this season, but that does not account for all the reduction in Preston Smith’s numbers this year.

Smith showed some signs of improvement in the last two games, adding flashes of pass rush and making some key stops. While it is unlikely he can approach his 2019 numbers, a strong second half from Preston Smith would be a big benefit for the Green Bay defense.

3. Rookie of the Year: ILB Krys Barnes

There isn’t a lot to choose from here. First-round pick Jordan Love was not expected to play much and has not been active for a game yet. Second round pick A.J. Dillon has seen limited snaps on offense while third-round pick Josiah Deguara has been lost for the season due to injury. Inside linebacker Kamal Martin played in only two games thus far and is now on the Covid-19 reserve list.

Undrafted rookie ILB Krys Barnes has been the Packers best rookie and a very pleasant surprise for the team this season. Barnes was cut after training camp, then signed to the practice squad and activated before Week 1. He presently leads the team in total tackles with 50. He has recorded one sack and three tackles for loss.

Barnes is a physical linebacker who works hard, studies the game and plays the run well. He has been the team’s best rookie in the first half of this season.

4. Unsung Hero: C Corey Linsley

Centers don’t typically get a lot of attention unless they make mistakes, but Corey Linsley has had a strong start to the 2020 campaign.

Linsley is grading out extremely high this season with his run blocking being good but his pass protection is among the tops in the league thus far.

Linsley is tough, plays through injuries and calls the signals for the Green Bay offensive line. He’s a heady center who often makes blocks on the second level on outside runs and screen passes.

Linsley is in his contract year and at 29, he may not be back with the Packers next season. He has already managed to make GM Brian Gutekunst’s decision harder by having a career-best first half of the year.

5. Defensive MVP: CB Jaire Alexander

Alexander has taken his game to the next level this season and now must be considered one of the game’s elite cover corners. He has shut down some extremely talented receivers this season and is rarely beaten in coverage.

Alexander is confident and has elite speed and a short memory. Opposing teams are now hesitant to throw the ball in his direction, especially with CB Kevin King missing so much time opposite him.

The only thing Alexander needs to do to take the next step in his development is to make more big plays. He did that in Week 1 in Minnesota with a safety and an interception but that needs to become a more regular occurrence for Alexander to take his game even higher.

6. M*A*S*H* Award: The Offensive Line

The Green Bay offensive line has been hit hard by injuries but they don’t seem to miss a beat. Starting RG Lane Taylor went down for the season in Week 1 so the line had to be shuffled almost immediately.

Elgton Jenkins has played both guard and tackle this season. Lucas Patrick filled in mid-game at center when Linsley was shaken up but the offense didn’t miss a beat.

Rick Wagner has played both left tackle, right tackle and filled in as a blocking tight end and has done a good job.

All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari has missed the last three games because of injury but the backups have answered the call and the offense has continued to get the job done.

Rookie guard Jon Runyan has had to fill in at guard during three of the first eight games, but he has more than held his own on each occasion.

Through eight games, Rodgers has been sacked only nine times and the holes have been there for each of the team’s running backs. Despite the injuries, the offensive line has gotten the job done.

7. Playing at a Pro Bowl Level

The Packers presently have five players playing at a Pro Bowl level. Rodgers is a no-brainer and so is WR Davante Adams who has proven himself to be an elite player despite missing more than two games due to injuries.

Linsley and Bakhtiari are playing at a Pro Bowl level although if Bakhtiari misses more time he may not earn Pro Bowl honors (there will be no actual Pro Bowl game this year because of Covid-19).

On defense, Jaire Alexander deserves to be in the Pro Bowl for sure although his lack of interceptions may cost him some votes.

Aaron Jones and Za’Darius Smith are playing close to a Pro Bowl level but would probably fall just short as of now. They can easily earn Pro Bowl honors with a strong second half of the season.

8. Most Improved Player: TE Robert Tonyan

Last year’s starting TE Jimmy Graham was released after two disappointing seasons in Green Bay. The Packers were unsure what they would get from the tight end position this season although it’s an important cog in LaFleur’s system.

Robert Tonyan has stepped up and established himself as the team’s top receiving tight end. Through eight games, Tonyan has 24 catches for 314 yards and second on the team with five touchdown passes.

Tonyan had his best game of the year against Atlanta when he made six catches for 98 yards and three touchdowns.

Through eight games, Tonyan has won the trust of Rodgers and LaFleur. He is a willing run blocker, runs the right routes and is a reliable receiver who is also capable of making the occasional big play.

Doesn't say much for Gutekunzt and his cutting department. When not "one" of his drafted players is playing a even a semi regular basis.
That's sad

It's not only sad, it's how GM's get fired---i have no problem trying to find Rodgers successor, but a blind man could see the packers needed help on run defense last year and Gute did virtually nothing---pettine and his crew deserve blame as well----they should let Lafleur find his own man

I get the feeling if things don't improve in the second half as far as run defense goes, LaFleur may find his own man as defensive coordinator. It's been frustrating in many ways yet the team is 6-2 at the halfway mark and 19-5 during the regular season under LaFleur. Thanks for the comment, fansince1959.

The one who likely would have played a lot, Deguara, is on IR. Frankly I’m thankful his number one pick isn’t. Martin is likely to play a lot and Scott more as the season progresses. Dillon is gradually getting more snaps, or was prior to Covid. Runyon has seen snaps too. Don’t really see this as an inexplicable phenomenon.

My most disappointing would be Dean Lowry. I’d say J Williams rivals Tonyan for most improved and the under the radar player is more deservedly Lucas Patrick than Linsley. Can’t really argue with Barnes as rookie of the year at half way. Martin may surpass him by season end.

You beat me to it on Lowery as the most disappointing CW. P. Smith has been underwhelming. but Lowery has been a turnstile in the run game and ineffective rushing the passer. I might guess he will not be with the team next year unless he has a remarkably strong second half of this season. His cap dollars could certainly be put to better use elsewhere.

Agree on Jamaal Williams and you can make a strong case for Lucas Patrick although Linsley is grading out as the top center in the game and he's never been that good so I felt I had to recognize that. The only reason I wouldn't put Lowry as most disappointing is that his expectations weren't that high. Lowry was expected to be a run stuffer who can occasionally supply pass rush. He has been disappointing, but he was a complimentary piece at best if all went well. Thanks for some good insight, Coldworld, always good to hear from you.

The Packers knew Love wasn't going to play much this season. Deguara and Martin were the most likely to get significant playing time but both have been hurt and haven't been able to play much. At the end of the day, this draft may become a big problem for the Packers, but we won't know that for sure for a few years. Thanks for the comment, blacke00.

GB knew Love wouldn't play.
GB knew Dillon would be behind Jones/Jamaal.
GB thought Deguara would play.
GB hoped Martin could play.
GB knew Stepaniak wouldn't play much.
GB knew Hanson would be behind Linsley.
GB hoped Runyan could play. Maybe beat out Turner?
GB knew Scott would be behind starters, Redmond.
GB Garvin would be behind Smith x 2 and Gary.

Not exactly looking for immediate impact but I agree with CW: it looks pretty decent. Martin and Runyan look like they can play as did Deguara prior to his injury. Scott looks like he at least belongs in the NFL in some capacity and we will see what happens. Ditto for Garvin, though he is a little less ready for a significant role.

Rookie of the year award goes to an UDFA, wow! Talk about an unproductive draft class. Couple this with an underwhelming 2019 class and we can see why our team is good but not great. 2nd and 3rd year jumps we were all hoping for have not occured, so we have mediocre players all over the field. The only exceptions are Alexander and Jenkins.
Thankfully we have Rodgers who under the genius of Lafleur is thriving. The front office has been terrible at drafting but desreves a ton of credit for going out on a limb in hiring of MLF. I think he is the real MVP of the team and should be coach of the year in the league.

I agree that LaFleur deserves consideration as coach of the year. He is 19-5 through 1.5 seasons and is maximizing the talent he has on this roster. The 2020 draft was more of a future draft than an immediate draft especially since we knew Love wouldn't play much and Dillon would start the season 3rd on the depth chart barring injuries. As for the 2019 draft class, Savage, Gary and Jenkins are all starting although Savage has had a disappointing year and Gary has only showed flashes before he got hurt. The drafts have been questionable although we usually need 3 seasons to determine the true value of a draft. Thanks for commenting, ShooterMcGee.

This is definitely not what anyone wants to see from rookie class. I honestly think they drafted with an eye on 2021 rather than 2020, especially with uncertainty about what COVID would do to college football this year and the coming offseason which could make the next draft even more of a guessing game than normal. Deguara was likely to be the big contributor as a rookie before his injury. On the plus sides, the ILB group is looking the best it has in years, and the OL depth is excellent right now due in part to the rookie class.

Given the Packers stability in th most important places, the Packers will always be drafting for future seasons. Not immediate contributions. That doesn't just mean 2021 either. But in some cases for 2022 and beyond.

The HC is in charge of winning in the present, while the GM (who makes personnel decisions) is drafting for the future. This is abundantly clear looking at the Packers recent drafts. Its also not rocket science! You should know it by now. Pat attention.

Nah. I reject that completely. GB has a hall of fame QB who is only going to get older. The window is closing and the GM used two first rounders on projects. If your goal is to be competitive over the long haul, then your view has more validity. Belichick just publicly said that NE sold out to win the Super Bowl in 2017, be in the Super Bowl in 2018, and to win the Super Bowl in 2019. Not GB.

GB probably won't sniff the SB with Gute's philosophy. That's okay with you but not with me.

Barnes had a couple of nice games initially and made a good first impression with fans. As he plays more, Barnes has played far less well as DC look at film and find things to exploit. My hope remains with Martin as opposed to Barnes.

Don't be surprised when Kirksey replaces Barnes though Kirksey was stinking up the joint in his first two games.

I’ve come to believe that the usage of the OLBs has impacted them all. I see two mistakes that set the foundation for the issues.

The decision not to obtain a replacement for Fackrell as cover backer has proved unhelpful.

Secondly, the porosity of the D line is forcing OLBs to do things that are better done by D linemen not OLBs. Hesitation is death as a rusher, it’s a fine line in terms of pressure but also impacts momentum. I don’t really expect a DL of 275 ish pounds to be a stalwart in the run game, yet we’ve played one so much they are effectively being asked to be and on a D line that is weak elsewhere.

Maybe the last game saw a realization from the coaches. Maybe that was a factor in improved OLB play. I hope both are true.

In the Packers defensive scheme every player in the front 7 has gap responsibility. That most certainly includes the OLB groups. Last year that was sorely lacking especially from OLB, this year its slightly better (save Minn last week).

Gap discipline comes at the expense of pressure on the QB. One comes at the expense of the other.

And be a downgrade from Linsley.
Jenkins to LT where he'll be a downgrade from Bakh.
Runyan to LG - time will tell but maybe a downgrade.
RG is ? Turner is a push.
Wagner at RT or Turner is not needed at RG. Push.

Of course, maybe they draft someone or find a player in Nijman or someone else.

Runyan is the next in a long line of Packer interior OL th have played OT in college. Sitton Lang Tretter and a couple others.

Moving fom college OT to interior OG/C isn't really a transition to a new position, its very common throughout the NFL. The Packers have just been among the best at it.

Big fan of Jenkins and yes, he can play anywhere along the line. Linsley is grading out as the best center in the league this year. He's always been reliably good, but never approached this level so that's why I gave him that category. Thanks for the comment, Bennys33.

He has had a few mistakes.
A couple of penalties, when he was the least penalized in all of football last year.
I know he also gave up a sack.
I think he's been great too, but he's not the best graded lineman on the team even.

I like the depth the Packers have developed in the O-line this year. Between Patrick, Runyon and Wagner, the Packers have handled O-line injuries easily. Starter Lane Taylor will be back next year if the Packers want him. Additionally the Pack will get Stepaniak next year and supposedly he fell to the sixth round only due to his injury and otherwise would have been drafted higher.

If Bahk walks, the Packers will need to draft a tackle, but Linsley will be easily replaced despite his excellent season this year.

Linsley is the best pure center that this team has had in memory. He is not a converted tackle or guard like many other linemen that the Packers have drafted. I realize that it is not a premium position in today’s NFL but I will be sad to see him go. Those guys are rare. And no, I don’t want to play center ;-)

I agree on his caliber. I just believe that cap reality and perhaps his recurring back issues combine with Patrick’s emergence to make his departure virtually inevitable given our cap position. We have Runyon and Stepaniak in the roster for next year at guard and also a center to back up Patrick in Hansen. Just seems like everything lined up with Linsley moving on to a big contract elsewhere.

Sadly I don't see anyway we keep Bakh and Linsley, and I suspect the front office will be looking hard at the game film from while Bakh has been out. Obviously there is a drop off from Bakh to Wagner, Turner, etc but if they feel it's an acceptable drop off they may elect to put the dollars elsewhere. As expensive as all-pro LTs can be, letting Bakh go might mean keeping Linsley, J Williams and/or King for instance.

The Packers have a lot of talent on the interior OL right now, and I suspect Plan A was to develop Linsley's replacement this year and let him go while holding onto Bakh. But if they decide Jenkins or Turner can hold the LT spot down without creating major holes elsewhere in the OL that gives then that gives them more options.

I agree because of the surprise development that both will be gone in order to try to keep King and J Williams (even with the assumption of keeping A Jones).

I don't know when we've ever had a better line with more depth, so I think it may
be time to move on in order to upgrade other parts of the roster for future deep runs
in the playoffs (and rebuild the OL depth via draft and UFDA again in 2021).

Right now, EDGE, Safety, and DL seem to be the weakest positions if the above 3 are retained. Might even let Kirksey go and keep upgrading that position.

If you look at the facts. Gute took expiring contracts and used the money on Smith's and Amos and unfortunately on Graham. Now money on Kirksey and RT position opened up by Bulagas departure. Most of the money is going to Defense. I think Jones gets resigned if it is under 10 mill. King signs for reduced rate because of injury or walks.
Kirksey cut, Amos cut or restructures contract, BAK and Lindsley walk. Preston Smith may have to restructure or cut. Gute gets new DC and a good DT to compliment Clark. Gute picks up a #2 WR Free agent if nobody has established themselves on the team by then. Those are the logical moves with a Negative Cap coming. Ironically most of the moves needed to be done anyway because of performance, but the Cap may mandate it.

The depth and versatility on the o-line has been huge for this team. I hope Lane Taylor can come back, he has missed the last two seasons now after early season injuries. Bak is not a weapon, he is a blue chip LT. Lindsley has been good as usual. Actually was surprised he did not get traded or let go for the salary cap to address the DL needs in free agency. I would have preferred Gute did just that. His replacement is on the team. I think if Degura would not have gotten hurt he would be THE rookie choice for us. That was a really bad hit for our team. You can tell he is special right out of the gate. We knew our #1 pick wasn't going to do anything. I was hoping for a big dose of the #2 RB by now. It needs to happen or our goal line stands will get tougher with better competition. I like the Barnes guy i'm sure there is upside there and Martin for that matter. I like all the OL depth we have. I think if we freed some Cap this season we would have been more likely to upgrade at WR #2 and an xtra DL. We need CB/S help if we could also. If EQ and MVS take a positive step or maybe even Taylor and Sternberger we can be okay on offense. Don't see anyone making a difference on the "D". Hope Clark can earn his payday, I don't think he has yet. He has not taken over any games like his check shows he can. Hopefully all the guys get back soon from injury and virus. 10 days are good for that if they don't come out shaky like in Tampa.

A phase is something we go through. Look it up.
To be fazed is to be stung with reality, like an electric shock.

I sincerely doubt that you've passed an English class since the 3rd grade, since you are clearly too dumb to understand this.

The ONLY Cheesehead staffer that I attack EVER is Cory, but that's because he completely sucks on every level and he would never have qualified to get my coffee when I was an editor at various places.

Gil is great. Aaron is great. Never said a bad word about anyone else, so stfu with those lies. There are no continuing attacks. I made ONE comment about Cory, simply because he IS that bad.

People with a Master's in English do not use all capitalized words, vulgar acronyms such as "stfu", and non-words such as "ya". Thus, I conclude that your chances of having five degrees and two published novels are extremely remote.

It is much more likely that you are a homeschooled deplorable who is jealous of Cory's achievements. Keep striving, someday you might pass that GED test.
