Adams trade puts Packers in exciting draft position

The Packers now boast a bevy of premium picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The blockbuster trade which sent Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders will have a significant impact on Green Bay’s roster building strategy ahead of the 2022 season, as Brian Gutekunst sets about filling the 17-shaped hole which has been left in his wide receiver room.

But the trading of the league’s best receiver has also put the Packers in a unique draft position, after collecting two premium picks from the Raiders.

As a result of the move, Green Bay now has two first round picks and two second round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. The last time the Packers held that kind of draft capital was in 1967. In those days, the draft was 17 rounds.

The Packers currently own 11 total selections in the upcoming draft. The last time Green Bay used that many picks in one draft was Gutekunst’s first, back in 2018.

That year yielded Jaire Alexander and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and you’d have to go back more than another decade to find a draft in which the Packers took more than 11 players.

In 2006, Green Bay selected 12 players, headlined by AJ Hawk in the first round and Greg Jennings in the second.

Having more draft picks, and specifically more premium ones, affords many luxuries.

The Packers now have an increased ability to move up and down as and when they see fit, which gives Gutekunst a better chance of drafting the players he really wants, and lowers the chance of the Packers being out of range for a prospect they covet.

More picks in the early part of the draft also provides an opportunity for Green Bay to veer slightly from their established precedent regarding which positions to spend premium draft selections on.

At this point, it will be an extreme surprise if the Packers exit the first two rounds without a wide receiver, and having an additional first round pick increases the likelihood of Green Bay finally taking a receiver on night one.

The primary goal of the Packers brass is clearly a short term one at present: To chase a Super Bowl in the next few seasons.

However, the aim of the draft will always be to simply find good football players. Period.

Additional capital in a deep draft class gives Gutekunst the chance to add serious talent to his roster for both the short and long term.

Gutekunst’s record in first two rounds has been more than solid so far, selecting future stars such as Alexander, Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins.

The Packers General Manager will be rubbing his hands ahead of the annual player selection process at the prospect of injecting even more talent into an already excellent team.

Agreed this trade is like a blessing in disguise. If we could sign a good FA at wr then with 11 draft picks that too 5 in the top 100 not only the present but our near future is set as well given that we hit good in the draft picks.

Yeah, this trade is great for us.

One thing that bothers me though. I read where Gute offered the same deal to Adams after he got the offer and even sweetened the pot some.

Can you imagine if Adams said ok Gute, I am coming back. Can you spell handcuffed?

You can forget Douglas, Campbell, Tonyan and whoever else.

I am somewhat surprised no one else has jumped on this. I guess maybe Gute thinks he is doing Rodgers a favor by making this outlandish offer to Adams?

The draft this year will be super exciting.

I would love a couple of GA defenders in the first round on the DL and Edge but, unless Gute can pull off getting a great WR in FA or a trade, I think he will use his first pick to get that great WR, if one is available. It seems like the FO identifies the top WR's, which may only be 3 or 4 of them, and if available, I see him pulling the trigger.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Packers were not going to move forward in any kind of meaningful way with Rodgers and Adams together again. I would have preferred to keep Adams, not Rodgers. My thinking was that the return for Rodgers would be bigger and Adams would have more years left in the tank.

However, the Packers went the other way and here we are. I'm already talking myself into the direction. It's what I do as a fan. They do have the draft capital to fill some holes. The haul they got in return from Adams was huge. I hope they don't follow Gute's usual pattern of drafting fewer guys than picks available when the draft opens. Trading down, not up, is the path to success, IMO.

I think it will be tempting to trade 1a & 2a to move up to 5 or 6 in this draft and get a real stud for DL. However, there almost always is good talent available at 22. You can get lucky at 28 too (see Eric Stokes). So whichever way Gutey chooses to go we should be good. OTOH, with so many picks, I don't see him trading down to get even more (but lesser) picks.

So you're giving up what you got in the Davante trade for the 15 pick. They'd have to hit on someone very good to justify it.

To move to #6, Gutey would need to offer both first rounders and #53.

He will not do that. A trade down has great value for the Pack this year.

To move up from #22 to top 10 would certainly require an extra first round pick. Adding a 2nd rounder wouldnt be enough. Maybe both 2nd rounders.

I absolutely love the idea of trading up for a DL stud. I think that’s the only way to go if he’s serious about winning a championship. Honestly wouldn’t hurt my feelings to trade both of our first round picks up to top 10 for either two DL studs or maybe a DL and a S. Plenty of great value in 2nd round for a WR and defense is far more important.

Draft pick value calculator says we could get the 13th pick with 22nd and 53rd. Unless a top 5 talent drops to that point I personally would keep my picks.

They may have to move up into the teens for a guy like Olave or London. Garrett Wilson will be off the board by 15. One of the top D linemen may be tempting to move on . BG saw his "hold position" move not work with the wait for Jefferson and Aiyuk. He has to pull two blue chips while he has this chance.

I agree, Hank. Trade down. The #28 pick could net another second and third rounder....Cleveland's #44 and #78 for example.

Then Gutey will have #'s 22, 44, 53, 60, 78, 92, 132, 140.

8 picks in the first 4 rounds of a draft loaded with players at positions the Pack needs for starters and primary depth...WR, DL, Edge, OL, DB, LB.

And they will be on rookie deals. Good for a team in a cap cage.

With the depth at WR and Edge in this draft I wouldn't mind them trading down one of the 1sts at all. But I think they need to use a pick on a DT by 45 or so or all the top ones will be gone. Trading down from 28 to 35 or so gets them Watson at WR I think.

I think they need a DT too. In general we need one overarching thing from this draft: as many players who can contribute now on O, D and STs. Within that we must get a DT and 2 WRs who can help now as a priority at a minimum, in my opinion. Trading down for more picks helps with numbers or to move back in to get a particular player. Both could help this year.

I agree on taking a DT on day one or early day two. DT has some great ready to play prospects at the top end, but the quality quickly turns into more project type big guys.

I would Love Watson in Green and Gold.

Probably DT and WR by #28. IF the D line move off the board and he holds his spots, then a guy like Kenyon Green fills a starters position on the O line. I would prioritize these needs and then hunt for an OT and Edge with the two picks. He may move up from the #22 or the #28 a couple spots. I have him trending in that direction.

I agree. Trading down doesn't trend with a "win in the new ARod window" mindset. There are a lot of players in the top 60 who could plug into significant roles right away. I think those 1s and 2s are "now" picks, and 3 on are picks where BG speculates on development in this case.

While I expect Gutey to draft at least 2 WRs this draft, maybe even 3, I don't expect him to deviate from his tendency to avoid 1st Round WRs. That being said, we haven't traded away a Pro Bowl WR for awhile, so he may actually be more open to the possibility this year than ever before.

Draft days can be surprising. I'm sure Gutey has his targets and his plan. I am also sure a bunch of guys won't be happy with it, no matter what it is. Lol

If you were to have a generic plan, I think a WR in the 2nd, 4th, and 7th rounds would be warranted. We have 2 - 2nd round picks, 2 - 4th round picks, and 3 - 7th round picks. So a WR in each of those rounds wouldn't surprise me, and might be the thing to do.

I don't know if Burks is the real deal or not. I know 40 times aren't everything, but he really ran slow. I really don't know a thing about him, but his highlight reel wasn't terrible. I assume Gutey has a much better idea of what he will become than we can imagine. I'm going to ride with Gutey. If he wants to take Treylon Burks in the 1st round, it would surprise me, but it all depends on who else is available when we're on the clock.

I watched Arkansas vs Texas, Texas A&M and some of the Alabama game and I remember thinking he's like a turbo Lazard. Didn't have the most accurate QB throwing to my either.

Market share in college is one of the best predictors of NFL success for WRs and his numbers were pretty outstanding.

"29.3% target share
33.3% reception share
41.1% yardage share
50.0% TD share
That’s why Burks has been the 1st rookie WR off the board in early best-ball drafting. He took lead-wideout level opportunity in 2021 and produced even more than could have been reasonably expected."

Learned from your post, LL. I did not know about "market share" analytic. Being a marketing guy myself, those numbers are eye popping for Burks. That's a "Flywheel Effect" that displays production from target all the way to TDs.

29% of targets resulted in 41% share of the yards and 50% share of the TDs? Wow!

This is college. Any receiver projected for day 1 or even 2 should be elite and a primary weapon able to generate stats similar to that. If they can’t, there is a problem or they are a one catcher offense to a large extent, or the number 2 to a bigger prospect.

I hate when it won't let you edit if you post a link in your comment.

I was also going to say he ran one hundredth faster than Davante at 13 lbs heavier. I'd be really happy if they went DT/Edge at 22, Burks at 28 and Watson or Pierce at 53. I'm also like you, if they traded 28 down a few spots and came away with Watson and Pierce in the 2nd round I'd be fine with that too. I also really like Velus Jones as a gadget guy/returner in the 5th round. I watched some YouTube stuff on him the other day and he's more advanced at WR than I thought he would be. Dude can really scoot for a guy over 200 lbs, he looks a lot smaller than that.

I wouldnt get so wrapped up in the similar 40 times. Adams had a phenomenal 3 cone time which might be the most important drill at the combine for receivers. Burks didnt even run the 3 cone cuz it likely wouldve been bad. Completely different players. Burks reminds me more of a poor man's AJ Brown. He'll probly be good but comparing him to Adams is just setting yourself up for disappointment. I dont think he has that kind of ceiling but were all wrong a lot so who knows lol

So many good WRs this year.

My preference would be to go big guys in the 1st round if a couple are available.

I really want Jordan Davis or Devonte Wyatt at 22. Kenny Clark needs a running mate, and if JD is there, it would be stupid not to take him. He's a monster of a man, and even if he just holds his hands up, it would be hard to throw around him.

At 28, I'm hoping George Karlaftis or another Edge guy worthy of a 1st round pick is available. If not, I'm open to taking a WR at 28. Hell, it's almost the 2nd round. ; )

If I had to guess, I expect Gutey to take at least one WR in the 2nd round, even if he were to take one in the 1st, because our need is so great.

Treylon Burks
Christian Watson
Skyy Moore
George Pickens
Khalil Shakir
Alec Pierce
Velus Jones Jr.
Tyquan Thornton
Bo Melton
Danny Gray

These are the guys I'm hoping Gutey takes 2 or 3 of... : )

Watson is intriguing but in this particular year he’s the type of player i feel that I have to fight myself and pass on. Small school, not many targets (run first), great athleticism, but likely raw. He may well get over drafted post combine, but he’s a classic Gute type physically. My brain tells me no, he will need time. I hate that sometimes.

I can’t see us going for a player like Skye Moore. Much as I like him in isolation we have AmRod and Cobb. Moore is a true smaller slot type. Unless we are willing to cut, we don’t need that and it doesn’t help on the perimeter.

Pierce does not excite me. He’s stiff. Yes he can run fast, but he’d be a real one trick pony. Maybe in round 4, but his speed/size mix likely gets him taken higher. I’d rather take Watson and start him doing what Pierce does and hope for more.

Now, if we want a sleeper late round guy, I really find WR Dareke Young intriguing. He is out of somewhere I’ve not come across before this year: Lenior-Rhyne. He’s 6’ 2” 223 lbs.

Why? Well it’s fun to hunt for gold in the middle of nowhere, the same names are recurring already and this guy has dual threat and ST potential . He has played a lot with the ball in hand, has vision as a runner, he’s big and he’s got great hands. Needs to learn an NFL route tree certainly. Theres a guy who ought to be able to help on STs, play the option and grow. He’s been timed sub 4.5. He could pay his way as a gunner and option guy.

A late rounder type that has caught my eye is Danny Gray.

Bo Melton is another guy that would profile similar to Cobb and Rodgers in size. I don't think the presence of those two should be of any concern. I really don't think either belong on a NFL roster. Well, maybe the Bears or Vikes.

They will sniff out some quick twitch guys and project them for the slot and return game. A. Rodgers is not guaranteed a spot on the roster. Skye Moore is already better than Rodgers. Fast feet. A low two or high three.
They will get a returner for Biscaccia.

Burks ran a 4.55. Adams ran a 4.56.

Burks brings an excellent resume of on field production while being very versatile. He's a football player...and off the charts in short, intermediate and deep catches. Even runs the ball out of the backfield. His RAS score is not top shelf as Gutey likes. But Gutey likes football players too, even if the RAS is not off the charts.

Big at 6'3" and thick at 225 lbs, I would see him logging many rookie year snaps with the Pack.

Burks or Olave at #22 is fine with me.

Adams isn’t very fast, in fact, we’re it not for his technique and lightning feet, he’d be a marginal type. I’m not sure Burks is that blessed in what Adams excels at. That difference could result in average at best. Caution is required against NFL defenders, the top 2 percent of college players. He’s a second rounder in my eyes. His major positive there is I do think you could play him early.

I'm not impressed by Wilson either, but I think London and Burks are better versions of Lazard, and that's not bad. Both are excellent blockers. I really believe the run game is going to be even more emphasized this year (speaking of which, I absolutely love Kyren Williams, I'm just afraid he isn't going to be the BPA on a Packers' turn).

Pickens had a lot of injuries in college or else he would likely be the clearcut top receiver in this class. Despite the injuries, Im still a huge fan of his game and I think hes the most physically mature and pro ready receiver in the draft. David Bell is my #2. Would love to see one or both in Green and Gold.

I see Pickens as a round 2 type. Great hands, decent long speed, not great acceleration, possibly able to be knocked off routes (willowy and not overly physical except in the catch) and a little sloppy as a route runner, which isn’t the greatest for our QB. Just back off an ACL surgery, so should be healthy but further to catch up.

I wouldn’t draft him in the first. I might draft him in the second, but I’d not look to him to be more than a 3/4 this year. Olave is much more pro ready, by comparison.

A new, highly respected ST coach.

This seems to be a good place to get some feedback on my preference: Trade pick 28 for someone's first round pick next year plus a move up this year--probably switching our 5th rounder for their third rounder. The third has good value this year, and odds are we'd do better than 28 with next year's--certainly not much worse. The big thing is it would give us two firsts in case we want to move up to get one of next year's good QB prospects.

I get the "win now" but Rodgers is going to be gone very soon, and by next year the Packers should know if Love can be his successor. I actually like Desmond Ridder and Kenny Pickett (both remind me a lot of a "poor man's Rodgers") and Sam Howell in this draft. They don't scream superstar, but they all seem like potential hidden pearls to me, and Ridder and Pickett both seem like they'd gain a lot by backing up Rodgers.

Because we're win now still. I would love to spend both 1's on starting WR's. I believe we could get 2 that could contribute day 1 that run in 4.4's or below. A WR and DL possibly are the picks or WR-Edge. Our offense needs more at WR and that's the real need. We should walk away with 2-3 WR, OLB, DL, S and maybe we get a top corner if JA wants the dreaded highest paid CB $. I don't want to revisit that. Maybe he gets tag and traded also.

well, the problem is we don't have 2-3 years for them to get better. We need contributors day 1. I was really surprised our slot guy could not get anything going last year because I thought he was pretty good...but he didn't show us much. When you say round 2 we remember that's 20 plus draft picks out of the best rated players. There are some of those that eventually be better than the first few off the board but not many. This kid Christian Watson 6'4 208 runs 4.36-40. Has ST returner experience, runs fluid and his speed is evident when he's on the field with end arounds, etc. He may not be the #1 we need now but has value as a weapon. He may be at 28..22 may be too high. A lot of good WR's and Edge guys and quite a few DL. We have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds and I think we have a good shot a 3-4 pretty good player in the wheel house alone.

Nah they need as many pro-ready players as they can get now. The future is now. If anything, i wouldnt be surprised if they traded future draft capital to take further advantage of this deep draft class.

Keep the picks and make them count. Excellent year to rebuild the offense and defense.

Bold prediction: Gute will use one of the 2nd round picks on a QB.

Question marks remain about Love, you can never have too many promising QBs on the roster, 12 might be gone in two years, Gute will get a couple pass catchers & other needs with other picks, and a quality prospect with be available.

Do it, Brian.

This is generally considered one of the weakest drafts for QB's in years. So, no, drafting a QB with a second round pick would not be a good idea.

I think another primary concern during this draft must be fixing the STs. We do get the weekly snap counts on this site from TGR. But it can be hard to judge the big picture from those weekly snapshots

Here is a listing of guys that make me wonder if they should either step up their ST contribution or risk losing their job to someone that can. There is not a single one of them that plays much above "replacement level", IMO. They are listed in order of the amount of ST snaps they actually played starting with Deguara and Taylor at 31% down Lewis 0 ST snaps. Gotta trade down a whole bunch to really put the bite on this list.

Josiah Deguara
Malik Taylor
Krys Barnes
Amari Rodgers
ESB (gone)
Jonathan Garvin
Dominque Dafney
Kylin Hill
Tipa Galeai
Patrick Taylor
Juwann Winfree
Chandon Sullivan
Kevin King
Allen Lazard
Vernon Scott
Robert Tonyan
MVS
Randall Cobb
Marcedes Lewis

If Gutey traded Rodgers and rec'd the Wilson compensation he'd have picks 9, 22, 28, 40, 53 and 59 in the 1st two rounds, TE Fant, DL Harris at positions of need and Lock.
Love's off season development has been hampered by Covid so I haven't written him off. Gutey would have two 1st and 2nd rounders next year for draft/trade if Love isn't the answer. I think Love would be the top QB in this year's draft so he does have talent.

Bubba....right on! Would have been an unbelievable opportunity to turn the team into an immediate contender in 2023 for the next 6 to 8 years.

KnockThe...yes, add the TEN 1st and 2nd round picks to the young proven talent (Clark, Alexander, Stokes, Gary, Jenkins, Jones, Dillon, Runyan et al) and be good for 6-8 yrs.

The qb dilemma reminds me of the Favre saga. I give Ted Thompson props for going out on a limb and correctly going with Rodgers.
Mgmt this time went the least controversial route by sticking with Aaron. I use the term mgmt because I think Murphy may have made the decision and told Gutekunst to carry it out.
