After Further Review: Packers vs. Raiders (Preseason)

Ross will provide a few observations every Monday afternoon following a Packers game based on a few viewings of the condensed version of the game on NFL GamePass.  While this might not be the All-22 camera deep dive that might be more "educational", it should provide a conversation point for the rest of the week.

This, is of course the Friday after a Thursday game.  All things remain the same.  The same, but different.

Boy, did Tim Boyle turn things around.  He was mostly forgettable up until a tipped ball that looked like it was intercepted, but wasn't.  As soon as that wasa over, Timmy turned on the laser show.  He was spectacular.  That is as good a performaance from a backup QB as I've seen in Green Bay since "good Matt Flynn".

Love the content... Ty Summers paragraph missed the editor though. Maybe check that one.

That aside, ++ on Raven. Such a change at Safety.

Boyle reminds me of Favre in the sense he gets too excited early and makes bad throws, then settles in and gets in the zone. Great ability to forget the bad stuff and make good stuff happen to put the Pack in a position to win.

I think Brady Sheldon's hit will always be a penalty in Canada. He's lucky a Canadian Mounty did not arrest him and charge him with assault and battery.

He (Boyle) has also learned Aaron's move-to-the-left-and-throw-a-strike. That's not an easy thing for a quarterback to do...very impressed with his movement, accuracy, and tight spirals last night.

Boyle is currently the epitome of hot and cold even with near perfect protection. That is not what you want in QB 2. He has yet to play against first stringers as well.

Ironically, having called for him to start earlier, in retrospect I would like to have seen what he could do behind the joke of a line that started the second half. I suspect that it would have been carnage, particularly if he still opened with his quarter one performance.

Is he worth keeping? Yes, but currently he will lose us games, not win them.

I see your point, but it wasn't just him, it's the whole team and it's hard to get consistency with a lot of new moving parts. I got to think everyone takes a while to get into rhythm, which would explain the first quarter.Either way, very happy to see a flash of something because we've seen none with Kizer.

As has been pointed out by anyone watching the Packers with a functional pair of eyes, GB doesn't have a legit back-up QB. Boyle is the lesser of 2 evils.

If NE cuts Hoyer, he might be a better option than what we have now.

I'm Going to be blunt. Told you Brown would be good, and really could have played Safety. Told you Davis would make this team. Done, Period. Told you Summers will be the talk of Green Bay. (He has.) And now I"m going to tell you he will be the starting ILB. It's essential for any rookie LB, that the DL can get push. And do their jobs. Fear is your question marks. Summers is No gamble. He will hold up. Boyle won two games ago. The hit on St. Brown says one thing. 7wrs will be needed. And Shepard must improve. His Holding must stop. And keep him in the slot or he will get hurt. The smart move is to keep Moore on the roster now.

And Summers is unlikely to play the cover backer role. Team may need to abandon that and play two ILBs of a more traditional nature. It is pretty clear that Martinez’s back up is Summers. It wouldn’t be a shock therefore if he does start in a trad two ILB formation if they open with one. Sheldon may actually be a find as well, and a little better in pass coverage. He may find a berth and is a comparable athlete.

To my mind, Davis hasn’t shown that he is better in returns this off season than Shepherd, who seems far calmer. That’s not the reason he will likely stay.

Houston: 1 PR for 4 yards, 4.0-yard average
Ravens: 2 for 15 yds., 7.5-yard ave. 2/51 KR, 25.5 Ave.
Raiders: 1 PR for 15 yds, a 15.0-yard average. No KRs.

Shepherd: 4 PRs for 34 yds, 8.5 Ave in the preseason.
Davis: 1 PR for 17 yards, a 17.0 Ave. in the preseason.
Davis: 37 PRs, 12.1 yd. ave. in the NFL regular season.

I think Shepherd has some good elusiveness, but I don't really see as much short-area quickness as some credit him as having. He had a pedestrian 7.13 second 3-cone, a poor 1.68-second 10-yard dash, and a decent 4.40 20-yard shuttle, all at his pro day, not to mention his 4.61 forty.

Davis had a 6.60 three-cone*, a 4.22 20-yard shuttle, and a 10.94 60 yard shuttle*. That translated nicely to being a good punt returner. [*Best at the combine for WRs.]

Shepherd looks very comfortable catching the ball. I am not worried that he will have a high muff rate. IMO, Shepherd would be at least adequate as a punt returner. To say he's better than Davis can only be justified by the eyeball standard. I don't even know how to compare which player is calmer.

Davis has already proven that he's one of the best punt returners in the NFL. Came in 3rd in the NFL in 2017 for average. Would have been 3rd in 2016 and 7th in 2018 if he'd had enough returns to qualify.

Just sat and watched that second quarter against the Raiders for a second time...Tim Boyle was amazing as he hit receivers all over the field, engineering three TD drives with two passing TDs. He was indeed superb playing QB in that quarter once he got past that slow start. After that performance it sure looks like the Packers have a really good backup QB to develop. He just needs more playing time to gain experience...the skills and potential is there.

didn't get my prayers answered, no players hurt-esp GB Packer players. Thought the 80yd field was ridiculous and the TV coverage from KTLA (Los Angeles) was predictably Raideresque and was third stringish; but it took them about 10-15 minutes of TV time to announce the quirkyness of the goal line being on the 10yd line. If the chef game is on TV, i'll just listen to the radio broadcast, which is very good! Larabee and the Rock, what could be better?!

That game would probably feature a bunch of "bread basket" catches and Y-"banana" stuff in it! It was interesting to see how the other team's (Raiders in this case) announcers were discussing how many extra fabulous WR's the team had (sound familiar?) and how other teams must be salivating to snatch them at cut-downs (hmm, sound familiar again?). :)

I do not get it why many Packers fans does not love Trevor. Maybe because Packers kept him over Jeff Janis?

Because, as a receiver he was flat out bad. He survived on his returning, which also got him benched for bad decisions. Great with ball in hand but hardly calm under pressure.

LaFleur started earlier in the off season that Davis has come back with a different mentality. His lightbulb had gone off. Seems LaFleur was astute. Davis has clawed his way back.

That said, he likely would not have under MM because his current role would not exist in that O. Looks like mature Davis appeared at the right time to add horizontal stretch to LaFleur’s bunch approach.

I admit I saw neither coming and didn’t see the true fit till Thursday watching his routes. Being wrong is great in these circumstances. Wish it would happen more often (Sprigs, Jones etc.)

You have a long memory, Coldworld. Davis got benched because as a rookie he fumbled twice. McCarthy was known for putting players in the doghouse and keeping them there. I don't know if fumbling equals bad decision making. At least one fumble was a muffed punt. Davis has no fumbles since his rookie year.

TT kept all 7 draft picks in 2016 and kept a career-high 6 UDFAs that season. After losing 5 games out of 6 during the middle of the season, McCarthy decided to "shorten his bench" beginning with the Nov. 28 game. GB proceeded to win 6 straight. Trevor Davis played just 4 more snaps all season, with all four coming in the last game. Kenny Clark saw his snaps reduced from 24 to 15 per game. Lowry was benched for the Nov 28 game, but then played 105 of his 158 snaps in the last 5 games. Allison got 5, 5, 3 and 13 snaps until he got a 43 and 61 snaps in the last two games, covering for Cobb who was injured and inactive those last two games.

It was not just Davis, it took pretty much every WR & TE 3-years to learn McCarthy's system where they had multiple adjustments on routes depending on what the DBs did. I think LaFleur's scheme is much more basic and easier to learn.

I was not much of a fan of Davis until this year. I saw him as stuck in STs. Yet as others have said he now gets it and is more ready to contribute in both phases of the game. Good for him. Sheppard looks like a younger version of Cobb. Summers remains a work in progress but has the speed and smarts to eventually become a starter, but Bolton looked better before the injury. I don’t think the team will carry 7 WRs this year. I expect that there will be 4 tight ends, a fullback, a DB and maybe even an extra lineman vying for the 53, and that means fewer WRs. All teams in the NFL will have to cut good players and just because we have fallen in love with a certain player or two does not mean that he will be snatched up by another team before we can put him on the PS.

“Inaccuracy is not something that usually improves as you go from college to the NFL, and Kizer wasn't accurate at Notre Dame.”

Ross - Have you ever looked at Boyle’s college career? 48%comp, 1TD, 13INT...doesn’t get much worse than that.

He played ok at times Thurs, but also flashed some serious accuracy issues peppered in throughout the game. The only reason people are so high on him right now is because Kizer has been so bad. As it stands he should be the #2, but I personally don’t think either are an adequate backup.

If you look at the throws Boyle was making, in many cases with the WR covered, he threw the ball with good location and gave the WR a chance to make a play. That was encouraging to see. His accuracy looked like it was spot on for this game anyway.

GB can't afford what a decent backup QB would cost. Even if f Boyle were 50/50 hot and cold, he could at least go .500 in a replacement role which would be better than our last two #2's.
