Are the Packers Making a Mistake by Keeping Rich Bisaccia?
By GilMartin

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst held his season-ending press conference on February 4th to address the state of the team heading into the offseason. One thing Gutekunst made clear was that special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia would be returning next season despite the team’s continued struggles in this area.
Gutekunst made it clear he has confidence in Bisaccia and the direction the Packers special teams are heading in.
“What Rich brings to our culture, this football team, he’s a very impactful coach around here,” Gutekunst said. “I thought we’ve been better on [special] teams these last few years than we’ve been in a long time. Our cover units have been better, we have one of the best punters in the National Football League, an excellent snapper…I've got a lot of faith in Rich and his staff, what they do around here, not only the X's and O's and what they bring to the field, but what they bring to this place culturally is really important.”
There was some truth to this assessment. The Packers punt and kick coverage units statistically did improve a bit this season. The punt coverage unit ranked fourth in average yards allowed per return while the kick ranked 11th. That overlooks some key longer returns allowed by the team at inopportune times which helped give the Packers opponents a short field in key points in the game.
There were no issues with the punting game. Daniel Whelan led the NFL in average yards per punt. This was the first time a Packers punter accomplished that goal and the first time a punter averaged more than 50 yards per kick in Packers history. That’s not an easy accomplishment when kicking in the cold and windy conditions at Lambeau Field in the second half of the season.
But problems persisted with special teams. Missed or blocked field goals cost the team at least three wins this season including in their playoff loss to the Bears. Lining up Luke Musgrave, who is not known for his blocking, next to the inexperienced Brant Banks on the field goal protection unit cost the Packers a blocked kick that caused them to lose a game.
There were times when special teams didn’t have 11 players on the field and cost the team timeouts. The Packers also committed too many penalties on special teams that cost them field position both when they were blocking on returns and when they were covering punts and kickoffs. The kickers also struggled to get kicks into the landing zone far too often, something that other teams in the league seemed to have had little difficulty with.
Then there was the decision to allow Brandon McManus to play when he appeared not to be fully healthy. McManus struggled through the season in large part due to injuries. But it is up to Bisaccia to determine whether his kicker is healthy enough to be effective and play well. Gutekunst also indicated he would pay McManus his $1 million roster bonus which means McManus will at least be in training camp to battle for the kicking job again next season.
Bisaccia also never found the right return specialists. The Packers longest kick return this season was just 36 yards. Their punt returners were near the bottom of the league. The Packers just couldn’t find a reliable and consistent return specialist. The decision to not utilize two-time All Pro return specialist Keisean Nixon until the playoffs was understandable, but the team never found a replacement who was even close to as dangerous. On punt returns, neither Romeo Doubs nor Matthew Golden gave the team much juice.
The special teams units ultimately cost the Packers at least three wins. That would have meant possibly winning the NFC North and getting at least one home playoff game this season.
Regardless, it appears Bisaccia will be returning. Hopefully, he can improve the Packers special teams units in 2026 and have them do no harm to the team in key situations. If not, this decision to bring him back will look like a big mistake for the organization.

"Gutekunst also indicated he would pay McManus his $1 million roster bonus which means McManus will at least be in training camp to battle for the kicking job again next season. "
Ugh. The cap savings to cut him aren't high (about $2M), but last season was what he was the two years before he came to GB. I think he blinded the Packers with an incredible hot streak in '24 after we'd all been forced to weather a string of bad kickers. Maybe they think that roster bonus is a small price to pay if he rebounds to being more like '24. Havrisik isn't great, but I think he can do what McManus did and for about the league minimum.
"Daniel Whelan led the NFL in average yards per punt. "
Has a great leg, but outkicks his coverage on a regular basis which is part of the reason why the Packers surrender longer returns (17th) and force among the fewest fair catches. If they'd kicked to the corner in the playoff loss rather than surrendering back to back long punt returns in the playoff loss to the Bears?

I never knew Gute was such a comedian with that Bagdad Bob impersonation....
True, the Packers special teams improved in a couple of areas, but that was negated by big mistakes at the worst possible times that cost us games.
The Packers used a total of nine players for kick and punt returns, and not one of them was worth a crap. And that falls on both MLF and Gute. Surely it can't be that hard to find a couple of reliable returners that can be counted on week after week...but it sure as hell is for our "dynamic duo", LOL.
Look for more of the same next season.

"The Packers used a total of nine players for kick and punt returns, and not one of them was worth a crap."
That alone shows me that they have a very hard time evaluating talent. Much of this should be figured out in training camp and pre season, Baring injury, there should never be a 9 man tryout for KR/PR during the season. That just screams incompetence at all levels. I have never seen it before.

He's doing what they want him to do. The ST are good where leadership cares about being good. They haven't cared about returns since the 90s. As far as that goes, all they want is someone to secure the ball so the offense can get out there and do their thing. Bisaccia is still extremely well regarded around the league. He'd be unemployed for all of 5 minutes if the Packers fired him. And anyone they brought in to replace him wouldn't fix the perceived issues.

Gute gave them Hardman and they refused to even elevate him on game days even after we had Doubs out there in his guardian cap due to injuries and 4TEs active. I doubt that was Bissaccia’s choice. It’s LaFleur who requests elevations/determines inactives. All Gute can do is give them an option. Last year they made it clear it was one they would not take despite injuries.

He didn’t have input into deciding to keep LaFleur. I doubt he has any over LaFleur’s subordinates.
The evaluation of performance and subsequent decision to extend LaFleur was made by a sports real estate lawyer with no football side experience whatsoever. Think on that for a while. Murphy usurped the original hiring, but at least he was an ex player and long time sports administrator.

The Soothsayer of Pittsburg (Vic) would say something like "your ST play is only as good as the depth of your roster." And it sure seemed to me Holmgren regarded ST as equally important as the defense and offense. So, are there a lot of things at play that the causal/critical fan may not be aware of: is the roster loaded w of sub-par players, is there a reluctance to commit the correct players to ST, poor conditioning (that would exempt off/def starters from playing ST because "I'm tired?"). When I saw Josh Jacobs taking the kick-off in the latest rendition of "one and done," I thought the Packers are finally taking this seriously. MLF is the HC. The buck stops with him.

The Packers had the choice this offseason of letting go of head coach Matt LaFleur or keeping him.
I'd have let go of him, but the Packers decided to not only keep him, but to give him an extension for at least the near future.
So, what's done is done.
I hope I'm the one who is wrong about LaFleur. I think he has shown some good results over the years that give reason for hope, that he just might be able to lead the Packers to a title.
After the decision to keep LaFleur, I'm pretty much okay with whatever he wants to do as far as assistant coaches.
I would have been excited about Jim Leonhard as our new defensive coordinator, but LaFleur wanted someone else.
I would have liked to have moved on from Rich Bisaccia as our special teams coach, but LaFleur didn't want someone else.
Well, whoever LaFleur wants as assistants is pretty much okay with me, as long as he takes a step or two forward to get the most out of his teams -- the satisfying sense that comes with the Packers reaching the fullness of their potential. In other words, leave the heartbreaking and gut-punching season finales in the past, and instead finish strong.
As I understand the situation, LaFleur has two more seasons to put it together with the Packers along with Jordan Love as quarterback.
I think they can do it. I pray for them to do it. I realize there's a lot of uncertainty, but that's life. There's uncertainty with just about every other team in the NFL going forward, too.
So, GPG!!!
***
P.S. My main goal is to get past the halftime show at the Super Bowl. With my lack of interest in the teams playing, I might just skip it altogether. My larger concern is that the NFL doesn't continue on its insane path of wokeness, which basically insults the majority of its fans by sending the message that we're a bunch of rubes and bigots.
The condescension is sickening and silly. It seems a diversion from the greed of the millionaires and billionaires who operate the NFL, beginning with the seemingly inept and insipid Roger Goodell trying to justify an income that I estimate amounts to an obscene $40-$60 million per year.
Never underestimate the ability of humans to ruin a great thing.

I come here to get away from politics.
Swisch
February 05, 2026 at 07:22 pm
Well, that's pretty much my point.
It's the NFL that's been shoving politics down our throats for the past several years.
After not allowing Peyton Manning to wear black hightops to honor the passing away of Johnny Unitas, the NFL bigwigs have pushed BLM slogans on the field season after season after season.
I agree that this is a good place to avoid politics most of the time, but sometimes politics intersect with sports in a way that's difficult to avoid.
When the NFL is apparently putting out propaganda for gayness and transgenderism in the halftime show of the Super Bowl with a performer that probably most NFL fans have never heard of, it's worthy of a comment.
When the NFL tells us ad nauseum to stop hate -- and other trite slogans at the level of a nursery school -- it seems an extremely annoying insult to good Americans who are kind to everyone (but don't like being manipulated or intimidated or otherwise jerked around).
It seems appropriate for NFL fans to speak out to the elitists of supposed superiority who have the arrogance to tarnish our experience of our favorite team.

…and it surely makes me wonder why the richest owners in the league - broncos (and some of the richest in the world), need a former Secretary of State as a minority owner??
And where did a politicians salary, like Condoleezza Rice, become enough to enjoy ownership in an NFL team…???

I wonder what Gute and MLF see as the secret sauce Rich brings to the culture of the team? I remember when he was hired, and he got some positives from the press for his demeanor in training camp. No one was talking back to coach B, dammit! New sheriff in Titletown.
Next, we had concern Coach B might leave, and seeing managing the time clock and any potential game-altering situation got Coach Matt firmly in a headlock, the Packers made Rich an Asst HC to keep his influence in Green Bay. Didn't want to let him slip though their hands. Here we are.
What do you think? Is Rich the coach that yells at guys when they pee on each other in the shower? Does he enforce curfew? Does he make sure everyone is lined up for the Anthem? Does his lack of attention to detail rub off on our ST crazies? Do the 53 look to him and think "as long as Coach B is on the sideline, we have a chance?"
It seems like the Packers are clinging to a version of Coach B that never was a thing.
I know he's a player's coach, and the Raiders players played hard for him in an interim role back in the day, but jeepers, wtf is this?

I have been critical of Bisaccia and the Packer special teams - hard not to be after Doubs booted the on-side kick against the Bears and gift wrapped the game for our rival. However a look at a ratings service provides a somewhat different view.
LINEUPS ranks every team's special teams across all of the special team functions (kick off and kick off return, punt and punt return, field goals, PATs, etc. etc.) and has done so since the 20-21 season. The rankings are as follows:
Season Coach Ranking
2020 Mennenga 30th
2021 Drayton 24th
2022 Bisaccia 24th
2023 Bisaccia 21st
2024 Bisaccia 12th
2025 Bisaccia 16th
I was surprised the Packer special teams were ranked in the top half of the league for the last two years. Every rating scheme is different and I don't know the details of this one or how well it is regarded, but it is food for thought......

We haven’t actually screwed up on coverage for a while. We were absolutely unthreatening on returns, but generally sound too. Where we screwed up was on kick protection. That ended when LaFleur seemed to relent and allow the use of starters.
So we have been better in the sense of giving up possession/scores. We are about as dangerous to others as a gentle breeze, but that’s still progress I suppose.

Excepting the 10 second attention spans of most modern fans some may recall the general gladness when RB was hired as special teams coach. The special teams under McCarthy were awful at times. Never forget the person you hire to replace someone you fire might very well be worse than the person that is there now. Gannon will be viewed under that microscope though Hafley wasn't fired.
Part of RB's problem is the Packers don't draft players exclusively to be on special teams as many teams do. That's a Gute problem.

If most of you feel as though you are going back to the empty well, I would ask why?
There are at least 6-7 teams who are drafting and coaching well-why not learn about those teams, appreciate what is being done correctly and root for them? No one is forced to stay in a bad marriage, drive a lemon or remain in a persecutory religion. It is clear that MLF, Gute and Policy are telegraphing exactly who they are. Next year will be the same and so many will have wasted many precious hours in denial and hope. It is difficult to move off of team but it will save hours of grief. It gets better. Radical acceptance.

The nature of special teams is that mistakes are going to happen and they're going to have a big impact on the game. A missed FG is a turnover. A turnover on the return is a turnover. Holding or blocking in the back are penalties that move you back.
If it were up to me, rather than spending a bunch of time and energy making the special teams better, I'd try to figure out a strategy that minimizes the opportunity for our special teams to cost us the game. It's still going to happen, but not as often.
Don't return punts. There's nothing about the kickoff return that's more important than not fumbling it. Don't give you opponent an opportunity for a long punt return. Don't attempt long FGs unless it's the end of the half.

The title in this article used the wrong name. A coach is only as good as the players he has on his team. This falls at he feet of the General Manager who can't seem to find the players to give a coach something to work with, and takes a pass on the obvious ones, Cooper Dejean being a recent example. Imagine him on special teams.
