Around the NFC North: 2022 NFL Draft Edition

Taking a look at what other NFC North teams did in the draft this last weekend.

Around the NFC North has generally become a part of my regular in-season column "Hello Wisconsin," but with the NFL draft having just occurred, there's a whole lot to talk about regarding how the Packers' "competition" in the division made out with their picks.

So without further ado, here's a quick look at the drafts that the Bears, Lions and Vikings all had this past weekend.

Chicago Bears

  • Round 2, Pick 39: Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington
  • Round 2, Pick 48: Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State
  • Round 3, Pick 71, Velus Jones, WR, Tennessee
  • Round 5, Pick 168, Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah
  • Round 5, Pick 174, Dominique Robinson, EDGE, Miami (OH)
  • Round 6, Pick 186, Zachary Thomas, OL, San DIego State
  • Round 6, Pick 203: Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor
  • Round 6, Pick 207: Doug Kramer, iOL, Illinois
  • Round 7, Pick 226: Ja'Tyre Carter, OL, Southern
  • Round 7, Pick 254: Elijah Hicks, S, California
  • Round 7, Pick 255: Trenton Gill, P, North Carolina State

The Bears were without a first round pick in the draft, and the Packers had already taken three players by the time Chicago was on the clock. It seems like, at the very least, an interesting coincidence (if not a direct correlation) that the Bears immediately took two defensive backs after the Packers took Christian Watson.

Experts have given draft grades that were mixed to positive for the Bears. Chicago definitely needed to upgrade its secondar. But coming into the draft, there was a very good argument that the team had the worst offense in the league on paper, and that the Bears have done little to nothing to set Justin Fields up for success. This draft doesn't really change that.

From an outside perspective as a fan of an opposing team, there's not a whole lot about this draft that gives me any cause for concern that the Bears are suddenly going to pose a threat. The Bears' future depends on the development of Fields, and in both free agency and the draft the Bears seem to have been mostly content with the status quo on offense. That has to be concerning if you're a Chicago fan.

Detroit Lions

  • Round 1, Pick 2: Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Michigan
  • Round 1, Pick 12: Jameson Williams, WR, Alabama
  • Round 2, Pick 46: Josh Paschal, EDGE, Kentucky
  • Round 3, Pick 97: Kerby Joseph, S, Illinois
  • Round 5, Pick 177: James Mitchell, TE, Virginia Tech
  • Round 6, Pick 188: Malcolm Rodriguez, LB, Oklahoma State
  • Round 6, Pick 217: James Houston, EDGE, Jackson State
  • Round 7, Pick 237: Chase Lucas, CB, Arizona State

The first two days of the draft are really what captured the headlines for hte Lions. When the Jaguars unthinkably took Travon Walker wtih the first overall pick, it left the Lions with a no-brainer to take the local phenom Hutchinson with their first pick. Hutchinson has a chance to be a franchise-altering player if his college skill and production translates to the NFL.

After taking Hutchinson, the Lions aggressively traded up to number 12 to take Jameson Williams, a speedy wide receiver. Williams will be a major addition to a Lions passing offense that needed some extra help. Between Williams and Amon Ra St. Brown, the Lions are setting themselves up nicely with young pass catchers.

It was a surprise when the Lions decided to go back to another EDGE with Paschal, who is a versatile player with a lot of talent. The Lions continued filling needs throughout the rest of the draft.

The Lions had so many holes on their roster that it would have been very difficult for them to take players that weren't at positions of need. But they probably had the second-best draft in the division behind the Packers, and took some important steps toward building a competitive roster. They still have a lot of holes and are unlikely to be a real danger in 2022, but this is the first step that needed to happen for this team to build itself up.

Minnesota Vikings

  • Round 1, Pick 32: Lewis Cine, S, Georgia
  • Round 2, Pick 42: Andrew Booth, CB, Clemson
  • Round 2, Pick 59: Ed Ingram, G, LSU
  • Round 3, Pick 66: Brian Asamoah, LB, Oklahoma
  • Round 4, Pick 118: Akayleb Evans, CB, Missouri
  • Round 5, Pick 165: Esezi Otomewo, DE, Minnesota
  • Round 5, Pick 165: Ty Chandler, RB, North Carolina
  • Round 6, Pick 184: Vederian Lowe, OT, Illinois
  • Round 6, Pick 191: Jalen Nailor, WR, Michigan State
  • Round 7, Pick 227: Nick Muse, TE, South Carolina

The real story of this draft is going to be the fact that the Vikings traded with the Packers and allowed them to take Watson. The Vikings got a couple extra second round picks, and immediately used one of them to take a cornerback, much like the Bears did. Several years from now, who is going to be the team that regrets this deal, if either? Will the Packers regret giving the Vikings additional ammo, or will the Vikings regret giving the Packers Watson?

Beyond that, the Vikings had a decent draft. They went heavy on the defense, which is exactly what one would have expected out of the team this year. The VIkings' defense was simply too inconsistent to allow this team to content. Will the pieces they brought in be the answer? There were certainly plenty of Packer analysts who were hoping the team might take Cine in the late first round or with one of their second round picks.

But again, the Vikings and Packers are going to be inextricably linked by the trade they made in this draft. Who will come out with bragging rights? It'll be quite a while before we know.

Until the Lions get a franchise QB, they'll always be behind. Until the Bears decide to take their offense more seriously, ditto. And the Vikings continue to be a puzzle that always seems to be missing a couple of pieces. How good is this draft for any team? Get back to me in two or three years. Though, a few impact rookies will emerge this year.

I think it's better than that.

The Lions, like the failed city they call home, are just destined to perpetually suck. The ownership, the organization....they don't understand how to put a quality product on the field. That doesn't change just because you get a new GM, a new coach, or new players.

The Bears don't take offense seriously. I don't know what the deal with that organization is, but they can't recognize the difference between a franchise QB and a failure, and they wouldn't know what to do with a franchise QB if he sat on their face. So there's that. Yes, they put good defenses and good special teams on the field. No, they never put high-powered offenses on the field.

The Purple will always self-destruct. They were an expansion team in 1960, and since that time we've won 7 Championships and they've won 0 and yet they consider the Packers as "rivals". In the 60 years of their existence, they always collapse. The Favre Collapse was probably the sweetest one ever, as all season long I persistently reminded Purple people that Favre would throw their season away, even while he was playing some of the best football he'd played in 10 years.

God has not invented enough bad things to happen to the Purple, the Bears I can respect, and I just can't really take the Lions seriously.

Usually I agree with you about things but I'm impressed with what is happening in Detroit. They seem to have gotten their craniums out of a lower orifice.

The Bears and Vikings have, and will continue, to suck.

Fellow Hodag, you have inspired me to take a closer look at Detroit. I still look at them and say "Who are they better than?" Are they better than the Vikings, when they
went 0-2 against them last year? Are they really better than the Bears?

But I'm going to look deeper. Do you really think they could be the second best team in the division? Because I don't right now.

LH: I do think the Lions got better with this draft, but they are so far into the bottom it will take another draft or two like this one to become competitive. Will they screw it up? They certainly have a wonderful tradition of doing so.

Love your last sentence ("God has not invented enough bad things to happen to the Purple..... ")!

The Lions are, on paper, making a some good moves for the future. They are the only team I see ascending in the North at the moment. They look like being a couple of years away though. The Vikings are stuck in a stasis period where each year is much like the last and the Bears are too early in their new configuration to tell.

Disagree. They have an above average QB now and that might well be enough. In case you haven't noticed the Lions are forming a really solid core of players who are fanatical in their effort, like their coach.

This team will be a contender for the NFC North in the not to distant future. They need more players and they aren't that far away.

Yeah I agree about the Lions, I like what they are doing, to limit what the qb has to do. Good 1-2 punch at running back yep, top 10 te check, building the trenches check,. Not sure about their secondary, but they still have time to address going forward. I get Goff isn't great, but he's not the future either, and I believe he's off the books next year or the year after. Then they have his cap space, to add more pieces around the qbs they draft. Besides as long as Campbell the coach you know it's going to be all gas and no brake, so watch your kneecaps!!

You do realize that Detroit has had some good players in the past? Megatron, DonkeyKong Suh, a Super Bowl MVP QB for the last decade....the issue in Detroit isn't talent.

Campbell is fiery, and people like fiery, but nobody wants to live on a volcano. They didn't end the season very strong, it took them 17 games to get to 3 wins, including the season ender we gave them. The week before, they gave up over 50 points to the Seattle team we had shut out.

We're hearing words, but they're going to have to show me something on the field. I'm a non-believer.

Yes, DET has had some really top tier talent. It's got to be just awful to see them trade away their franchise QB only to see him win a Title for his new team, proving that QB was never the issue in DET. This trade up to get Williams reminded me of them taking Charles Rogers at #2 (never panned out and didn't last through his rookie deal) and Roy Williams at #7 the next year (also only had one really good year in DET) who was eventually traded to DAL. Of course, Megatron was also taken at #2 overall and he proved to be worth that and more, though they squandered his talents with their lack of roster building ability. Time will tell if Campbell can change a culture that no one has been successful in shifting.

Yeah, my Dad used to tell me the Lions were good once. Long time ago. My memory doesn't really kick in to about the Beatles so ever since then, they've mostly sucked.

In 1970, we opened the season with a 40-0 loss to Detroit, and we closed the season with a 20-0 loss to Detroit, so I guess we got twice as good during the season. I've never really felt we gave them the appropriate payback for that and I'm starting to lose hope we will. Even when we had the 30 year home winning streak against them, or whatever, it still wasn't quite enough for me.

I think we should steal Hockenson from them. They deserve it.

Harry—I’m in agreement with you—this team is building—-They have a number of very good players. They lost some very close games last year; games which looked like they were going to win. They also seem to have bought into their coaches “tuff guy” character. They’re definitely improving.

Regarding the Bears - Fields is the real deal, now he has Getsy coaching him, and for next year the Bears are loaded with cap space. So no worries this year - after that it will be a different story.

If you go to rubechat, you'll find viking fans calling for the viking GM to be fired. Detroit had a decent draft and Chicago is still feeling the effects from drafting Fields. Being the Packer fan, that I am, I am really excited with our picks and cannot wait to see our new receivers, in action and our defense, under Joe Barry, rock and roll all over the gridiron! The Vikings got fleeced a bit on the Lions trade for pick 12 but their fans were really bitching about the trade with the Packers even though the Packers overpaid to move up to 34. I'm afraid Cine will be a great pick for them and wouldn't be surprised if he's the best player of the 5 1st round picks from that Georgia defense. Georgia could have 2 or 3 1st rounders from their defense next year, including a top 10 DT in Jalen Carter. That teams was LOADED.

Cine is a great pick, but the Vikings don’t really change overall. They get good pieces but they don’t get enough to carry them. They remain decent in a bad division. Let’s put it this way. Take the Vikings roster and ours with Rodgers removed. How confident would the Vikings team be against us?

Thanks for this, Tim. The division matters. Some people like to skip to the end and see how we match up with SF, or Tampa, or KC, but the reality is, the division opponents matter more than any of them. LaFleur has crushed these guys. The Lions have one win that we gave them. The Vikings have broken through twice and are 2-4. But best of all, the Bears are 0-6. That's an aggregate 15-3 against the division. People like to say that it's a weak division but these teams are not going 3-15 against the rest of the league.

Win the division. Start the playoffs at home. Even though that hasn't worked the last three years for us, it's still the best path to the Super Bowl.

There is one coach in this division who has proven he can win at this level. There is one QB in this division who has proven he can win in this division. We had the best defense in the division a year ago and we've gotten better. I very much like our chances to win the division and be one of the final four teams in the NFC, just like the last three years. and perhaps even make the Championship game for the third time in four years.

I hope you younger fans are enjoying this as much as I am, because this is clearly a Golden Age in the history of this franchise. There's no guarantee that in the future we're going to have this kind of success.

Bears: Kind of like watching a dog chase its tail around in circles.....Our first-round pick Walker should make an excellent QB spy.

Lions: Accumulating a lot of high-end talent, but still should be in prime position to draft the QB they desperately need next time around. After that, they should climb their way to respectability, but seeing is believing with this organization.

Vikings: A couple of their higher picks have either crime or injury red flags. Also, in trading down with the Lions, they lost the opportunity to draft Kyle Hamilton; they got a fine prospect in Cine, but it will be interesting to compare the two over time.

I thought the Lions did well in the first two picks. Hutchinson will start for them but I am not as high on him as others seem to be. No doubt the kid will work. I just see him as more of a plugger who will have a nice career but not an All Pro. Williams will be a stud but he is going to miss some early development time early in his career. You also have to wait to see who is throwing him the ball. Goff is not a long term answer. The rest of their draft is just ok.

The Bears really need to stop trading 1st round picks. They have too many needs. Getting Mack hurt them more than helped that franchise. Now they are starting over. The Brisker pick was a good one and Velus Jones pick was solid. After that it looked like they were trying to fill needs on the field rather than get the best players available. That is a dangerous way to draft.

The Vikings got a nice prospect in Cine but man drafting a questionable character in Ingram so early, yikes. Go take a look at his situation for yourself. This is a family friendly site. So many good players were yet available. Why? Asamoah was a decent pick as was Muse a good value in the 7th.

Maybe I am a homer but I do honestly believe Gute ran circles around these teams. We had mor ammo but considering where we drafted from I love what he was able to accomplish. Only time will tell.

"Getting Mack hurt them more than helped...."

I agree, although that was a pretty unpopular thought at the time, when people wanted US to trade for him...to show we were "all-in". He was a great player in his prime, but you can do a lot of good for your team with some high picks, too.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The Purple does not care about character. Love Boat? Whizzinator? Randy Moss? The mentally ill guy they drafted who retired instead? This is an organization which tampered with Favre and lied about it. Screw them with a hammer, sideways.

Poor Jameson Williams, he looks absolutely thrilled to be holding that blue jersey. Might as well just take the year off for recovery from that acl injury at this point and hope they can find a good QB the next year.

I’m actually a Goff fan but that’s because I love rooting for the underdog and I think it was 2019 he went up against us in the playoffs with a finger he’d broken throwing his hand into someone’s helmet the week prior. Guys got heart that’s for sure.

Apologize as in middle of workout using phone but that happens more often than Snot! 😀

I think many if not all have missed what happened with these teams in the division. Their draft had NOTHING TO DO WITH WATSON it had everything to do with Rodgers resigning.

The Vikings may very well have one of the top 5 pass rushing defenses in the league if health prevails. They are very strong at LB but what they did is significantly and systematically upgrade their defensive weak spot in backfield. Go back and look and then research them. They are already strong offensively. Anyone who thinks they will not be competing with the Pack think again and take those glasses off.

Detroit added two awesome players one on the offensive side and another on defense, but go back and look at their draft after those two players. Defense to stop Rodgers and company. They are well coached and play really hard. I like direction they are going if a Lions fan. We will be fighting for our lives every time we play.

Chicago...I think they are in huge rebuild process but again look closer at their draft and positions drafted.

Our division rivals drafted to stop Rodgers. We are in an alley way fight to win division. Love our draft because Gutey smartly drafted guys on top he didn't need from a pure needs perspective like our division rivals. He drafted to take our team to a whole new level. Gutey gets an A+ and while the division will be difficult I once again see the Pack on top barring a dissasterous injury.

KnocktheSnotOutOfYou - I’m in strong agreement with your take on the Vikings. I loathe their team/organization (although not quite as much as the Broncos), but they are of the lowest common-denominator. I say this incognito because my brother, a best friend, and several other friends of mine are hard core Vikings fans. But you’re are right, their offense is VERY good and their defense looks to be improved. We will be in dogfight with them - despite our dislike for their team.

I think the Packers are lucky to be in the NFC North. Gute can have one of his usual B- or C+ drafts and still look good by comparison and win the division by a mile. Then they get their extra playoff game revenue and Murph uses it to build a few more condos or build a roller coaster. If they were in the NFC West they would finish in 3rd just ahead of Seattle and the dogs would be howling for Gute's head.

They've gone 39-10, so minus the phenomenal 15-3 in the division, that leaves 24-7 against everybody else.

If you deduct the division games from Chicago and Minnesota over that period, their w/l percentage against the league is respectable. The Lions......not so much.

The NFC North is not the toughest division, but it's not the weakest, either. It's one of the ones in the middle....average. If we were 6-0 in the division and 5-6 against the rest of the league, then that "weak division" stuff might have some merit.

The Vikings had a pretty good draft. Trading back for that team who needed depth and some starters was a good move. Very smart to take 3 DB's out of the first 5 picks. There backfield was a sieve last year. Who are they trying to beat, oh yes, the Packers with Arod. Vikings will give us a run for the money and make the playoffs as a wild card IMO. The Packers will still own the North.

I think the vikes did well. they sure have a host of edge rushers so it looks like they are staying in the 4 3 defense system. Considering all the free agent defense they got, they sure have a lot to choose from and can insure the pass rushers stay fresh.

You want to bet a beer that the Purple are going to be a playoff team?

They were 8-9. Outside the division, they were 4-7 . They lost games to bad teams, like Cleveland and Detroit, on their own field.

Their starting QB has a good arm and can run an offense, but he's never really shown he has nuts in the clutch. The Purple had a lot of 30 point games, including against us, but they also had games where they couldn't move the ball and they lost almost all of those. I'm not seeing how they've really improved that.

I think they're tiny. If you look at the size of their defensive front, and you look at the size of our offensive front including Lewis and Lazard, and we should just be able to push them out of the way.

Hope you are right LH but I think you are underestimating the Vikings. They had a lot of key injuries. They have the makings of a pretty tough team.

Even the Lions battled us hard and we couldn't contain ESB's brother who was just a rookie last year. Now they draft Jameson. The difference between winning and losing usually isn't that significant in the NFL. One turnover, one timely stop, one blown call, etc. I'm very comfortable with our D barring injuries and believe we should have pretty good success against most any one. Our ST's completely unknown right now and hard to expect huge improvement immediately though we can only hope right? Our offense will be okay but lots of unknowns as they may not hit on all cylinders right out of the chute. Will have much better feel heading into regular season.

If the Packers are out of the playoffs and the Lions are still in it, I will be rooting for Lions. They deserve it. However, I could never root for da Bears or Vikings....

I thinks its funny that the author thinks the Bears took 2 secondary players as a reaction to the Packers taking Watson? Im sure the Packer receivers were the least of their worries when Minnesota has Jefferson and Detroit just drafted the best/most explosive WR in the draft. Im a Packer fan, but really?

Wouldn't make sense would it as the Packers lost Adam's, MVS, and ESB. They drafted them in large part because they will be facing Rodgers for at least a few more years.

Think about what Ron Wolf did in the 1999 year after Randy Moss torched the Packers during his rookie year the season before. He drafted Antuan Edward's at Safety with their 1st rounder. Ron then drafts Fred Vinson in round 2 at CB. In round 3 Wolf then drafts Mike McKenzie at CB.

Division rivals drafting defense to try slowing down Rodgers and Packers offense.

Yeah, I thought it was ridiculous for the author to suggest that the Bears picked two DBs to counter the Packers picking a WR in the second round. GMs are not that reactionary.

I think the Vikings had a great draft. I love Lewis Cine. He has a chance to be great. I really liked Booth. I've mentioned Asomoah multiple times. I am not a fan of Ingram that high, but he probably is an NFL OL. I like Paschal well enough and think that's about where he should have gone. Lowe and Nailor are nice late round picks.

I am not surprised Vikings fans didn't like the draft. Not much flash.
