Around the NFC North: 2025 Week 14
It's 2024 all over again.
By Mike Price

The universe feels slightly more correct this week as the Bears were taken care of by the Packers. Unfortunately, the Lions and Vikings had blowout wins. We just can't always get what we want.
Lions
The Lions beat the Cowboys, 44-30.
Game Notes
- The Lions took care of business again in a game after a loss - they still haven't lost two games in a row in the past three seasons. Jared Goff had a run-of-the-mill 309 yards and a tud on 25/34 passing.
- Jahmyr Gibbs saw the tweets during the week and while he didn't have a great average running the ball, 12 for 43, he had three rushing TDs and 77 yards on 7 catches. David Montgomery had more yards (60) on fewer carries (6) and added a TD, too.
- The Sun God was from a case of the Trump dance curse and had six catches for 92 yards, Jameson Williams had 7 for 96.
- The defense slowed down the Cowboys enough for the win and intercepted Dak Prescott twice. The biggest news was that Brian Branch tore his Achilles in the game.
Vikings
The Vikings beat the wheels off the Commanders, 31-nil.
Game Notes
- Here's the problem: the Commanders have become a horrific team and already demoted their DC, former Packers cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr, the next step is to fire head coach Dan Quinn. Meanwhile, the Packers' defense is one of the best in the league and Jeff Hafley will probably be hired as a head coach somewhere next season. Even more meanwhile, Dan Quinn is one of Matt LaFleur's favorite past bosses and he worked with micah Parsons in Dallas. The worst-case scenario, this off-season, is that Jeff Hafley leaves and Dan Quinn replaces him. We need to start a prayer circle or something to stop this from happening.
- Anyway, fresh off the worst QB performance ever, the Vikings chose to go with JJ McCarthy, who had been the worst QB in the league, and he went 16/23 for 163 yards and 3 TDs against Dan Quinn's defense. Bad!
- That wasn't even the worst of it. Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones combined for 25 carries for 128 yards. He's a bad defensive coach! We can't let this happen!
- If you want to feel better, The Vikings won this game by 31 points and Justin Jefferson still only had 11 yards on four targets. Lol. Request a trade!
Bears
The Bears fell to the Packers, 28-21.
Game Notes
- We all knew the Bears were outperforming and due for a come-down. We knew their defense depended on turnovers, and the pass game on offense was non-existent and we almost let them off the hook! With proper refereeing that game had a 20-point deficit at halftime, and the obvious PI on Romeo Doubs is called in the third quarter People say they don't want to be that guy, but LaFleur brought it up in the press conference. National personalities from Jourdan Rodrigue to Dan Orlovsky were tweeting about it. The refs robbed us of the blowout we deserved and we can only hope it actually happens in two weeks.
- Exhibit 1 for the blowout we deserved is the QB comp: Jordan Love was 17/25 for 234 yards, 3 TDs and a pick and Caleb Williams was 19/35 for 186 yards, 2 TDs and a pick. Ten more attempts for 50 fewer yards and two more completions, all while Micah Parsons was being strangled on a down-by-down basis.
- The run game was "going"; it took 32 carries to get 138 yards, and none went over 9 yards. Add in proper hold calls and they may have averaged under four yards per carry, but we don't want to be that guy so we won't talk about it.
- Defensively, the Bears got their interception and almost had another one. They played poorly, other than that. Love got what he wanted in the pass game and Josh Jacobs had 86 yards on the ground including an insane fourth-down conversion in Q4.

What a difference a week makes in the NFL.
If the Packers can beat a Bears team that gets to field 12 to 13 guys including the refs, they can go a long way.
Stay healthy and beat Denver. Broncos are due a letdown at home.

the bronco's d is for real. bo nix is a perfect quarterback for that weasel scab payton.

Do you remember if MLF has ever faced Payton before? I'm too lazy to do any research, I guess.

Packers got shellacked by Payton's Saints in 2021.
I recall before the Packers hired McCarthy, they tried to hire Payton as HC. He turned them down so they went to another young Offensive minded coach in Mike who agreed to coach the QB he did want in the draft.

You're remembering wrong. The Packers interviewed Payton and chose McCarthy. Payton wanted the Green Bay job bad, and he often mentioned it in interviews.

I was hoping the Packers would hire Payton. I thought he was the better coach. But after he made those comments about Hackett I am glad he was never a Packer.

Broncos 11-2. 6-0 at home. 10 straight wins. I can't imagine a much tougher game to face after the emotional win against da bears. Things look rosy now, but 4 games to go.

Right—Mr. Bounty Hunter. He should not have ever been allowed to be a head coach after that shameful scandal.

Denver is always a hard place to win, even when they don't have a good team.
They can't afford a letdown, IMO. A loss would give them a one game lead over the Chargers, who they play in the season finale. Denver is in the same boat as Green Bay.....keep winning or else.
How thin is the line between winning and losing in the NFL? We have three losses by a FG. We beat Detroit largely on the strength of a couple of 4th down plays. If Williams throw the ball a little higher, this game could have gone the other way.
I've enjoyed the ride so far this season, no matter what happens next. I'm expecting 2-2 and an 11-5-1 record and the 2025 regular season will be finished.
I do think the key for us is going to be protecting the ball on offense. We're nearly unbeatable when we don't turn it over, and we lose most of the games where we have 2 or more turnovers. Sometimes, it really is that simple.

11-5-1 would be my guess too. Plenty good for a playoff berth, and then anything can happen.

The Bears are (still) way over rated. I think we will beat them significantly more heavily the next time. The Broncos are not overrated. I think our D can cope with their O, but LaFleur is going to have to step up further than he had in forever to beat that D enough to separate us.

NFC East: The way the Eagles are playing now, there's a slim chance the Cowboys could win the division; wouldn't it be fun to play them again, especially at home?
Hafley: There will obviously be some HC openings, but how attractive is the Washington job? There will be some expectations with a QB like Daniels, but the defense is a bit of a geriatric ward and some rebuilding will be needed; No second or fourth round draft pick at this point.
Another team possibly due for a letdown is Denver, a team with a very good defense (they lead the league in sacks by a wide margin), but have barely squeaked by with a win on a few occasions. They deserve credit for "finding a way", but they're probably not as good as their record indicates. Still, it will be a challenge to win there as we've only done it once in the entire series history.

Sorry splitpea, but I live down here and no Cowboy fan thinks the Cowboys are going to win anything. Slim has left town. Their defense can't stop a sneeze. The Prescott-Lamb-Pickens passing game works, but the Cowboys lead the league in finding ways to screw up. You can feel their pain. I like it.
LA is going to win their division. Tampa Bay will win theirs, the Eagles will win in theirs, and we will win ours. That would leave Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, and the 49ers competing for 3 playoff spots. Nobody else is coming to the dance.

Actually the team I would really love to play at home is SF--they can be had this time and in the process we can stop that terrible playoff losing streak.

Split—you’re ALL gonna be weary of me bitchin about the Broncos this week—. They have slipped past opponents much like the bears. Should’ve lost to the Giants, Commanders, and jets. Their win over Philly was due to extremely egregious calls at the end of the game. Played the Raiders twice—nearly losing their first matchup.
But, they always beat us at their shack.

I know I am looking ahead to next year but it is likely Hafley will be somewhere else next year. He's a young, competitive man in his mid-40's. If he's not gone next year, it will be the following year.
Andy Herman said something interesting and troubling to me; "if Hafley leaves, they will likely do the 'Packer's thing' which is to promote from within". (Hafley will take his most successful position coaches as well.) I am concerned that GB won't put in the effort to locate the best Defensive Coordinator possible while they are on top. An average to mildly above average DC could hamper the Packers substantially.
This is the season when good coaches are being quietly evaluated by teams. I also don't think MLF is going anywhere after this run so promoting Hafley to HC seems unlikely) I hope GB is thinking strategically.

I have always thought Hafley left BC, because he knew he wasn't going to get a better HC opportunity there. Being an NFL DC would give him a better profile, then being a HC at a mid ACC school.
The Giants will likely look at him. I don't think Quinn is getting fired. That team over achieved last year, and this year had injuries from the outset of camp. He will get at least a half season next year. If they do fire him, I can't see a defensive mind getting the job with Daniels under center, and Kingsbury on staff.

Hafley was very transparent why he left BC...he was completely disillusioned with NIL and the demands on his time that detracted from Head Coaching duties.
And, having lengthy experience in the NFL, it was a logical career move.

Hafley signed a 3 year deal with us, and has one more year remaining. This is another reason that the "window" we're in right now could last another season, but nothing's certain beyond that.
This notion that after two years as a DC he's a qualified replacement for one of the winningest coaches of all time is not a well-conceived plan. We should be trying to lock up LaFleur; the only missing part of a HOF resume right now is a Super Bowl. Winning %, games over .500, total wins....all among the best of all time AND among active coaches. We'd be fools to run him off.
We are SO close to the top, why the urge to dismantle and rebuild? Keep Gutekunst and LaFleur running the show for a while.

Coaches and players get out of contracts all the time.
He has already signaled he is interested in a HC job. Though it was the 'same ol' Jets', he went to that interview. He is frequently mentioned as Head Coach material and has the intellect and maturity to succeed. It would be a learning curve but he has the capability.
I just don't want GB to get lazy about his replacement by promoting from within
MLF has cemented his place in GB with the last 4 games, unless he wishes to leave.

Teams cannot use the contract to keep a coordinator from interviewing or accepting a HC position. If a team wants him they can grab him.

Heck of a time to worry about coaching changes. We aren't the Giants. Let's get through the season then we have all the time in the world to worry.
Just keep improving the O & D lines, stay healthy and we'll sail through to the playoffs.

I disagree with the author - if Hafley takes a head coaching job after this season I wouldn't mind Dan Quinn as the Packer DC. He was a terrific DC for Dallas and has been a good DC for a long time in this league. He has been a head coach twice with not much success but that doesn't disqualify him from being a good defensive coordinator. Lafleur could do worse (think Barry, Mennenga, Drayton......).

Well that list of bottom of the barrel coaches, all MLF hires, makes one worry about his hires. Yes he got Hafley right. And yes he has completely whiffed repeatedly.

A long way to go yet. He needs to win through the New Year and start putting teams away more convincingly. Beating the Broncos and a beat down of Chicago would go a long way, but the New Year is what matters with this roster and 7 regular seasons under his belt.

Many of us Including me have lambasted MLF for hiring Joe Barry as DC but I have to give MLF a big shout out for going out and bringing Jeff Hafley In as DC. And I gotta think Hafley will be a NFL Head Coach next year!

I never disagreed with the Hafley hire. I did find it interesting. I waited until it all played out. I was skeptical after the Berry debacle that MLF could hire a good coordinator. He made an extremely good hire.

If the Packers win out in the regular season, LaFleur will be COTY candidate and Love will be in MVP discussions.
If the Offense stumbles in the last month while Defense plays winning football, Ed's coaching policy will create a more a more complicated decision. Will the Packers be better with Hafley or LaFleur as HC?
And if he promotes Gutey to an actual GM before then, even more intrigue in the evaluation.
But the way the Offense is coming alive now, I doubt LaFleur is going anywhere.
Hafley likely is. And he will be missed. Players respond to him. How he flipped the switch on swarming to the ball and eliminate the missed tackles has been remarkable. He did it by assertive coaching with constant emphasis and selling the vision.

"LaFleur will be COTY candidate"
Candidate? Well, technically...sure. But there's no chance he wins.
Top 2 candidates: Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson.
Strong contenders:
* Dave Canales: what he's done w mediocre talent and below-average QB-ing is impressive.
* Liam Coen: they're playing better than expected and a strong contender for a playoff spot.
Should be a contender, but won't:
* Kyle Shanahan: That team's been decimated by injuries, but they're still contending. He's done an underrated great job.
* Mike Macdonald: while this team does have good talent, you still get the feeling they're punching above their weight class.
And MVP is Stafford's to lose. But yeah...sure...Love as MVP will be 'discussed', but it ain't happening.

Packers need to be prepared for the eventuality of Hafley leaving and not be caught off-guard by not vetting possible DC replacements, NOW. Unfortunately, Hafley has been an outlier and my concern is MLF will return to his default-- 'promote from within' mediocre types.
MLF is remaining-he has won too many games to get replaced.
If they promote from within, there are no brilliant up-and-comers I've heard or read about. Hafley willl take the best and leave the rest. So, that leaves the 'mediocres' which are plentiful in GB.

"we almost let them off the hook!"
While obviously this is a pro-packers site, this is a bit unhinged even by that standard.
That was a close game, Green Bay Cowboys (GBC) fans are grasping at straws by blaming the refs for a close game, that was AT Lambeau. The truth is that the GBC talent should have prevailed, and while it did it was closer than it should have been.

The only thing the Vikqueens did was play themselves out of a top ten pick in the draft next spring and put enough on tape to remove any "element of surprise" in them that their upcoming opponents won't get caught in complacency against them. And they reignited some belief in JJ McCarthy.
While no one in the NFL "tanks," or at least admits to it, a bunch of wins now for Minnesota will have not much more value than preseason games. They're done for any playoffs. But with close out home games against the Lions and Packers they could relish the spoiler role against either or both of them.

Exactly—Colin Cowerd and a few other so-called experts are hailing the Bears as the real winners.
The officiating was obnoxious and “made” this game close. Is officiating easy—no! Were these easy calls to correctly make—Yes!!
The officials (throughout the year), appear to be purposely ignoring blatant holding against Parsons.
I’m probably the one person in America who is for fewer officials—they hoculi crew over-officiates every game—putrid to watch.
Great arrticle Jersey—it needed to be said—gracias!!
Next Sunday we’ll watch the Walton-Penner officiating crew and numerous camera shot of their private box. Screw the Broncos-hate that team.
Go Packers!!!
