Around the NFC North: Week 3
What a horrific week.
By Mike Price

We had it all. The Vikings could barely beat the Bears. The Bears still sucked. And the Lions looked like they weren't even a playoff team against the Packers. Guess we have to talk about the world we're in now.
Vikings
The Vikings embarrassed the Bengals, 48-10.
Game Notes
- It has to be that the football gods are out to get me. First, I casually talked about the Lions' window being closed, and then Jared Goff had like seven touchdowns or whatever. Now, after I made fun of the Vikings for only signing a bad corner and some washed-up DTs in free agency, the "bad" corner had two defensive touchdowns and another forced fumble in PFF's highest graded game ever. Sheesh. That was Isaiah Rodgers by the way. Next time, I'll talk smack about the Packers.
- Anyway, Carson Wentz started this one for the Vikings after JJ McCarthy's injury, and it sounds like he'll get at least one more game to win the starter's spot potentially. Remember, they signed Wentz in the last week of training camp after trading Sam Howell to desperately gather some draft picks. Wentz was 14/20 for 173 yards and two tuds in the game. Not MVP level, but they didn't need him to be.
- The Bengals were without all-pro QB Joe Burrow in this one and started Jake Browning. He wasn't great, averaging just 5.3 yards per attempt and throwing two picks.
- Jordan Mason had a big game in Aaron Jones' absence (the former Packer is on IR), with 116 yards and two TDs on 16 carries.
- I'm wary of implying the Bengals have a bad defense, don't want them to get twelve sacks against the Packers, but they did give up 27 points to the Jags in week 2.
Bears
The Bears beat up the Cowboys, 31-14.
Game Notes
- It makes you question what's going on with the universe when the Bears have a big win. Maybe the rapture is going to happen? It feels like something out of Revelation. Anyway, Caleb Williams was 19/28 for 298 yards and four TDs. Pretty good! He got his revenge against Matt Eberflus.
- It was Luther Burden III's breakout game; he had over 100 yards on the back of a 65-yarder. Odunze added 62 receiving yards and D'Andre Swift earned his name on a 41-yard reception, though he was more of a D'Andre Slow during his 13 carries for 33 yards.
- The Bears pressured Dak relentlessly with Montez Sweat and Gervon Dexter leading the way; both had six pressures. The pressure forced him into two picks and a QB rating of 80.3. Dennis Allen's defense depends on getting pressure with four and he has turned no-names into good starters in the secondary before. We'll see how it goes against NFL teams.
Lions
The Lions beat the Ravens 38-30.
Game Notes
- The stupid Lions are good still. You watch their game last night against the Ravens and the Packer struggling to get a first down against the Browns and wonder if the whole Lions team was drugged two weeks ago. Goff was 20/28 for 202 yards and a TD. Just a nice and easy day moving the ball down the field.
- The Lions' o-line problems seem to have been solved. Goff wasn't sacked and the team totaled 224 yards on 38 carries against a good defense. Though, it's worth noting Jahmyr Gibbs averaged just 3 YPC and Montgomery had a 72-yard run that inflated the total.
- The defense was OK. Playing from behind for much of the game, the Ravens never got Derrick Henry rolling, but they did put up 30 points and Lamar was 21/27 for288 yards and three TDs. Thought to be washed tight end Mark Andrews had 91 yards and two TDs, including a couple crucial catches with Brian Branch in coverage. The most important thing, really, was that the defense managed to force a fumble on Henry in the fourth and get a small field. Otherwise, we may be talking about the 1-2 Lions right now.

Goff is impressive-he threw one errant ball, the rest were accurate. My main concern for the Lions is their crazy play style. RB Gibbs is a Kamikaze, so is Montgomery. That team plays lights out and may be too injured by game 17 to compete.
The game was amazing, though. These Lions were not the same team who played the Packers in Week one and the current Packers (Offense/OL) will not be able to deal with them presently. It didn't take long for Detroit to re-orient after losing so much of their coaching staff. Culture and good coaches are everything and they have some good ones-the D coordinator was a acolyte of A. Glenn. He had that Defense grooving.
Good coaches are foundational and they bring their expertise and expectations with them. Ben Johnson is another one.

The Ravens have an overrated defense and they were playing without their best DL Madubuike. But the Lions still deserve a lot a credit for this one with two offensive drives over 90 yards and an impressive goal line stand in the second quarter (not easy to do with the Ravens' offensive weapons). And throw in some excellent coaching by Campbell, who found a way to get a first down when he need it with a gadget play (Are you watching, MLF?).
Lions drugged a couple of weeks ago? Or is the Packers defense that good?...Maybe somewhere in the middle, but right now I'm leaning more toward the latter.

MLF would never run some of the risky plays that Campbell does, he's too timid...

Cinci can't run the ball...and now they can't get the ball to their playmakers. Their defense is less than meh. They're cooked, and the Vikings--whose defense plays aggressively upfield--were happy to help cook them. Wentz is barely a game manager, but he's seen enough to not be overwhelmed by odd defensive looks like Ponder...I mean, McCarthy...was This might qualify as a "get well" game for the Vikes in their string of four straight "home" games, and I think Pittsburgh--who they see overseas this week--isn't very good, but the Steelers will pose more of a challenge than Cinci did. If Wentz plays well this week, they might have a QB controversy on their hands.
The Bears beat a bad Dallas team at home. Even last year under Eberflushed, they had a couple breakout home games, but were mostly trash otherwise. This game doesn't do much to convince me they're any good, but it gives their fans something to crow about. Their defensive stats are mostly skewed by the flogging they took from Detroit, but they weren't lights out in their other games, either. I don't see a different team, yet, regardless of coaching. I think they'll struggle in a low-scoring, sloppy game in Vegas this week...they might win, but I'd take the Raiders and the points.
The Lions were impressive last night. Yes, Baltimore was missing some key pieces on defense--best pass rusher and best DL--and that gave the Lions OL a break. Harbaugh usually has his guys ready to play and they respond to challenges like this...usually by leaning on Jackson. They didn't have enough last night, and with the exception of one run, Derrick Henry looked old and slow--which might be a pretty significant problem for them. The Lions aren't unbeatable, though. I think their CBs can be had and the catch and run game for the TEs worked against them pretty effectively. They're going to win 12 or so, and should beat the Browns handily at home this week.

They actually blocked was the difference. The lions o line and tight end blocked.
We did for the first two games.
Packers are better than the Lions.

You're using an anomaly week 1 game showing by Det to make that assessment. Anybody that watched what the Lions did to the Ravens will not repeat the ridiculous statement, The Packers are better than the Lions.

Three teams at 2-1 and the Bears with a resounding win over our opponent next week, Dallas.
Dallas on defense is as porous as the limestone of South Texas. They're giving up almost 40 ppg.

I have nothing to add or comment on, so I'll do it here.
Thanks for all you guys (writers and commenters) keeping me on the straight and narrow.

Yeah. This week we were the joke in the division. So what? Let them crow. It’s week 3. Besides, we’re still in first.
The Lions interior OL is paper thin. And not good. One injury and they’re toast. The way to fluster Goff is to make him a drop back passer and move him off his spot. Which we did in week 1. As was mentioned above, the style they play is going to lend itself to injuries. Further, they have no pass rushers outside of Hutch, and their CBs are bad. Dobber is right. They’re good. But they can be had. And the future isn’t bright for them. Cap problems on the radar.
The Bears suck. I expect them to be better than they are now by the time we play them, but the roster just is not very good. A lot of work to do in Chitown. Good thing their GM just got that extension. 😂
The Vikings also suck. The Bengals are going to be competing for the #1 overall pick without Burrow. JJ is as raw as can be and Wentz sucks. They have very little draft capital and they are the oldest team in the division by a mile.

The Packers schedule at this point looks far less daunting than it did in June.
In the AFCN, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati aren't going to be gangbusters--as you say, Cinci might be all-out bad, and Pittsburgh looks very average--and Baltimore looks like they'll score points but their defense is struggling...having that game at Lambeau is a plus. This makes that loss on the road to Cleveland more disheartening, but not season-crushing.
In the NFCE, the Packers defended home-field against Washington (who isn't as good as their off-season press clippings...at least, not yet), the Giants are already on QB2 and Dallas is porous on defense and beat up on both sides of the ball. Philly is the only juggernaut on the schedule out of these two divisions and they come to Lambeau.
If the Packers walk into Dallas and come out with a win, 3-1 (1-0 division, 3-0 NFC) is a pretty good place to be at the God-awful week 5 bye....which the Packers might already need to get healthy. The Packers could conceivably go 7-1 in those inter-division games...6-2 seems like a realistic goal.

…Oh-oh—did I miss the rapture(?)…and I’m a believer too—not good!
I said in a post last week that the best thing to have happened to the Vikings was the McCarthy injury—wentz is better than McC—especially with the exceptional Viking JJ and soon to return Addison.
My previous nosedive comments re the Lions may have been premature. They look very good. Their 4th-down success looks super…until it isn’t.
I don’t know what to believe about the Bears?…I hope it’s more about a pathetic Cowboys team.
I did previously believe the Bears were trending up.
Go Packers!!!

In a weird weekend in the league the NFCN was among the weirdest, with all the teams pretty much having games other than what was expected for them. In the grand scheme of things I don't think most of them from this week will matter much after the next weeks' worth of games are played.
Here at the next 6 games for the NFCN:
The Vikings play the Steelers in Ireland, at Cleveland, vs Philly, at Chargers, at Detroit, vs Ravens.
Da Bears are at Las Vegas, at Washington, vs New Orleans, at Baltimore, at Cincinnati, vs the Giants.
The Lions host the Browns, at Bengals, at KC, vs Tampa Bay, vs Minnesota, at Washington.
Talk about the Division when we add up all those results.

I think the Vikings lose to Pit, Philly, LAC, and Det--that puts them at 4-5 after 9 games (the Browns game is at home). They could conceivably lose all of those games, but I don't think Cleveland's game will travel well.
I think Chicago loses to Vegas, Wash, and Baltimore. NO, Cinci, and NYG look like dumpster fires but NO is getting better. Maybe Dart makes the Giants respectable, but I doubt it. They'd also be 4-5 after 9 games.
KC doesn't look good at this point. I think Washington is overrated...I think the Lions beat the Browns, Bengals, KC, and Vikings. They get TB at home, which is a real plus. Maybe they lose at Washington or KC...they're not going to win them all. I think they are 7-2 after 9 games.
I think the Packers COULD win all of their next 6 and be 8-1 at the midway point. I think after Sunday, we can't really chalk up nearly as many as we thought before. I think 7-2 or 6-3 with a game in hand over the Lions seems pretty likely.
