Bashaud Breeland: Contract and Salary Cap Details

Rob Demovsky has reported that the Green Bay Packers have signed Bashaud Breeland to a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum of $790,000 in base salary. Breeland also will receive a $90,000 bonus paid in three installments over the course of the 2018 season.  The base salary will be prorated for the thirteen remaining games.

The deal comports with the rules for a qualified contract under the CBA.  Under those rules, Breeland’s base salary for cap purposes only will be reduced to the minimum for a second-year player, or $630,000.  Since Breeland has missed 3 games, the cap number for the base salary will be 13/16ths of $630,000, or $511,875.  The full $90,000 bonus will count as well.  It is for the maximum allowed for qualified contracts.  Breeland’s cap hit for 2018 will be $601,575.

Assuming that Breeland is fully healthy, the signing represents tremendous value for a player who commanded a three-year, $24-million-dollar contract last March.  Moreover, Breeland shores up the team’s cornerback position, an area of need after the team put Davon House on injured reserve and Kevin King’s injury situation.

Some had hoped that the Packers would sign Breeland to a multi-year deal.  However, Breeland most likely wanted to prove that his foot has healed and that he is still a quality starting cornerback in the NFL so that he could obtain a long-term deal with a substantial signing bonus next season. Still, should Breeland prove himself over the course of the 2018 season, the Packers would have a leg up on other teams if they want to re-sign Breeland, and also stand to benefit in the compensatory pick calculations should Breeland sign elsewhere as a free agent.

The Packers cannot extend Breeland’s contract during the 2018 league year because Breeland signed a qualified contract.  Ted Thompson signed Quinton Dial to a deal for one dollar over the veteran’s minimum last season just so the Packers could sign Dial to an extension before Dial became an unrestricted free agent.  Giving Dial the extra dollar meant that Dial’s contract wasn’t a qualified contract and prevented Green Bay from saving $160,000 in cap space.

Breeland thus will become an unrestricted free agent in 2019, but he is a Packer (barring the team releasing him) until next March.

This just seems wrong. He must be considered a risk when no one else offered him a deal. CB's don't come cheap, and this is cheap by today's standards. If this works out like we all hope, Gute will look like a genius.

He will likely be inactive Sunday. So who will start? Without King we don’t look as good at db. What we really need is safety help. Don’t get me wrong, I like the pickup, I am just hoping that Gute can work some magic and pull another rabbit out of the FA hat.

King was upgraded from Did Not Participate on Wed. to Limited Participation on Thursday. What that means for availability on Sunday is anyone's guess. Better than a DNP.

Breeland visited Kansas City, Oakland, Arizona, New England, and had interest from Cleveland and the Jets. There were reports in late July that Kansas City offered him a one-year deal in the $7M to $8M area, but it was heavily based on incentives. KC only had about $7.5M in cap space at the time. Supposedly Breeland even sat in on team meetings when he visited KC.

One can google and find articles by various authors suggesting that their team should pony up a 2-year, $10M mostly guaranteed contract.

Something is off here. Either Breeland has the dumbest agent in the history of mankind, or he wasn't quite healthy yet, or something else was up. In any event, GB's offer was $90,000 over the lowest possible offer permitted by the rules. Breeland for all practical purposes couldn't have signed for much less.

I thought with LAR putting Talib on IR and Marcus Peters have some injuries, or NO putting Patrick Robinson on IR, there might be some competition between teams for Breeland's services. I guessed he'd command $2.1M. Way off.

Anyway, he is practicing today. Breeland has been a little up and down, but is a playmaker. He ran a 4.62 forty at the combine and a 4.57 at his pro day. I view him as somewhere between a #2 CB and a #3 CB. And he almost has to be better than House, right?

Nicely done TGR. Much of Breeland value comes from his flexibility as a DB. As big strong CB he had the ability to force changes in WR route running without using his hands. Much like Hyde with the Packers, he has the ability to play several positions within the backfield within the scheme. Like Hyde, his value is down graded by his so-called measurable. Breeland is a football player, and a damn good one. Most teams shy away mostly because of the foot, there was talk it could be career ending. Most teams are not going to risk that kind of heavy money on a player who is one step away from ending it all. All in all an outstanding signing for both parties. Breeland gets to play in a place and team that understands his talent and abilities, and the Packers defense gets a blue-chip player out to prove everybody wrong. People complaining about IAMGUTE signing are frigging idiots.

A different cologne to cover up a stinker, and another to cover up that stinker and another....what's the point. Everyone that comes to GB is good, will be good, a good deal...right?

"And he almost has to be better than House, right?TGR, your last sentence says it all. I was excited when we signed House last year, but he really wasn't effective. I know he played through some injuries and that probably has something to do with his performance. I was hoping he would bounce back this year and provide some solid depth, but he's just lost a step. Hopefully Breeland can come in and provide some needed help. Here we are again battling a CB issue! LOL. Please Lord, let Kevin King heal up, and keep the rest of our corners healthy. AMEN!

The chiefswire article I googled cited a KC radio guy as the source for the $7M/$8M. I don't follow KC and have no way of judging the value of that radio guy's report. Still, there were lots of articles on July 26 and 27 in the KC area expecting KC to sign Breeland at that time for some kind of money. I just don't know how much stock to put into the $7M figure. Lots of KC articles suggesting 2 years, $10M mostly guaranteed (that's is because Breeland's signing bonus back in March with Carolina was $10.5M, but that deal fell through when he failed the physical).
