Big Opportunities Await Golden and Williams in 2026

Flashback to the 2025 draft. Going into that weekend, it was pretty obvious that the Packers were going to come away with some kind of talent infusion at wide receiver. That season had been full of drops, struggles against man coverage, and a general lack of extremely high end talent. The space that should have been filled by Davante Adams as the #1 receiver was vacant, and it showed on the field.

The range of where a receiver could have been taken in that draft was wide-ranging, but as we all know the Packers didn’t wait long. Matthew Golden was the team’s first round selection in a historic occasion (one of the better draft moments for Green Bay in recent memory). I remember being surprised that Golden was still on the board at all in that moment, and the excitement as the team finally pulled the trigger.

The real surprise, however, came two rounds later when another receiver got the call from Green Bay. Savion Williams, the big, shifty gadget man from TCU was next. If Golden’s selection was a celebration, William’s was one of, well, confusion. And I recall my first thought upon hearing that news which was “wow they really didn’t like what they saw out of the offense last year at all

Maybe that’s true, or maybe Gutekusnt really did just take the best remaining player on their board in the third round. I do find it worth noting how needs-based the Packers’ 2026 draft was, compared to the 2025 result. After ignoring positions like cornerback, pass rusher and nose tackle in the first three rounds of 2025, they hammered those positions this year. Again, maybe that’s just the board doing the talking, but part of me still thinks the team felt extremely let down by the skill positions in 2025.

Fast-forward to now, and half of the 2025 receivers are gone entirely. Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion WIcks have landed on the east coast. Jayden Reed has already been extended, and Christian Watson looks to be next in line. Where does that leave the two receivers from the 2025 draft, who struggled to see the field much at all? In pretty damn good shape, actually.

We’ve already heard from offensive coordinator Adam Stenovich on this topic. When he talked to reporters a week ago, he did not hold back on the optimism for Golden’s potential.

It's going to be a big year for him" he summed up, and every move the Packers have made thus far signal that the team has the utmost confidence in him.

However, the quote from Steno that got a bit less attention was when he talked about Savion WIlliams. "It's gonna be really fun to watch him go out there and play. He's such a fast, physical player. ... I hope we see some great things from him, for sure.

Williams’ first year in the league was an interesting one, for sure. After spending his senior season at TCU as a do-it-all, gadget extraordinaire for the Horned Frogs, he saw heavy usage in the same role with the Packers. Of his ten total targets over the course of his rookie season, seven came behind the line of scrimmage. Add onto that his eleven total rushing attempts, and it’s clear his first season did not come close to utilizing his true potential as an outside receiver, which he absolutely has the size and speed for in the NFL. Also interesting to note that Savion’s main “gadget usage” came when Jayden Reed was out of the lineup, and those plays would have almost assuredly been called for Reed in those situations, instead of forcing Williams into situations that suited his game in college, but not the NFL.

To me, if Romeo Doubs’ being allowed to walk out the door was the organization’s confidence vote in Matthew Golden, the WIcks trade was a similar move for Savion Williams. There’s a huge difference in production potential between being a team’s WR4 and a WR5, especially in a system that rotates players as much as the Packers do.

Allowing Golden and Williams to come up together in the offense is ideal for a number of reasons, most of which is that they occupy different spaces in the offense. Take Golden’s 5’11” 190 lb frame, and contrast it with Willaims at 6’4” 22.

If all you knew about these two players was these graphs, which one would you guess is the one running gadget plays? Surely the one with 4.29 speed right? I digress.

These two players have a massive opportunity to flourish with an appropriate amount of targets going their way, and a higher place in Green Bay’s WR hierarchy.

It's odd after losing 2 productive WRs that GBs WR room might actually be stronger overall than last year. In reality, Doubs and Wicks have had ups and downs with the Packers, so they are definitely not irreplaceable like a Devonte Adams was when we lost him. I would argue that Golden and Williams easily have more talent and potential than Doubs and Wicks.

I also really like the other 4 WRs, Skyy Moore, Will Shephard, Isaaih Neyor, and especially the UDFA J Michael Sturdivant. The last 3 are bigger WRs. Moore, Neyor and Sturdivant are really fast. Moore, Shepard and Sturdivant are really strong blockers. All have very good hands. Injuries might not affect us as much this year if this backup group of WRs are as good as they look.

We didn't actually draft a WR but Sturdivant has been mentioned in every Top UDFA article written after the draft and in most rankings, he is Top 5. In other drafts he probably is a 5th or 6th round pick. The WR position group is a huge strength, now if we can just do the same to the TE group, we will have an overall great pass receiving game in 2026.

Sturdivant was passed on by everyone in a draft in which most GMs didn't think there was 200 guys that are draftable. I wouldn't get your hopes up on him.

The WR room has questions now. Golden has yet to show he can stay on the field and now we think he can take over the #1 spot? That would be a huge leap in year 2. Romeo was Love's security blanket, the guy he knew would be in his spot. That isn't as easily replaced as people think and I am not sure I see a guy on the roster that will step up there.

I didn't say he was a first round pick Bucky, I just said I like his skillset. And apparently a lot of NFL writers do too. Sturdivant is big, fast, has a large catch radius, and is a good blocker. GB must like him as they gave him a big $$$ bonus. Doubs was a decent #3 WR, nothing more.

I think the passing game will be fine with the Packer WRs and Kraft and Musgrave at TE. My concern is the rushing attack. The Packers only have one good blocking TE (Kraft) and no fullbacks or H-backs. They really need another Y TE to facilitate the run game.

Is it just me, or is this site having a problem putting new articles at the top of the page? I'm still seeing the article from yesterday with the Browns TE, which is already outdated because the guy signed with the Chargers, while this brand new article is buried. The same thing was happening last week. [Edit: The minute I posted this, a new article appeared at the top, so maybe they've fixed the problem.]

While I'm at it, I wonder what happened to that guy named Steve who used to post here all the time. He was often the first person to post comments on articles. His username was something like t7Steve. He suddenly disappeared a couple months ago. He never complained about anything or got into arguments, so I doubt that he left the site out of disappointment.

Anyway, yes, I am curious to see how Matthew Golden does as a full time player. Having him and Christian Watson and Jayden Reed on the field together is intriguing. I hope they all stay healthy.

I have no idea what we are going to get from Savion Williams. I am still scratching my head over that pick, actually. I agree that he needs to assert himself as an outside receiver and not just a gadget player. He has the size and speed to do it, but a lot of guys have the size and speed. The real question is whether he has the elusiveness and the knack for playing the position.

The Packers have a bunch of big, fast, young WRs (Williams, Neyor, Sturdivant and Moore) that have a lot of proving to do. Hopefully one or more pan out. Preseason will be interesting at the WR position.

Moore is a smaller guy actually--listed at 5' 10" and 195 pounds. He hasn't done much as a WR in the NFL. Maybe a slot WR or just a jet sweep guy.

The same thing happened to me Greg. Before the draft all my info was gone and I had to start over new. Lost a couple thousand posts.

Doubs production will not be easy to replace. He was also Love's most trusted WR on the team. A healthy Reed and Kraft can go a long way to replacing Doub's receptions and yards. Maybe Golden becomes his go to.

I recall reading after Doubs' was drafted, he and Love worked out together with a few other pro players during the offsesaon and have done so since.

Rodgers looked to Adams...Favre to Freeman. Love has some good teammates to throw to.

Most trusted or simply the one who was open? Never got the sense that Love played favorites like that other guy did.

Doubs was 2 things that set him apart, mostly healthy and a very consistent and thus predictable runner of routes. That type of player naturally tends to develop a good rapport with his QB. Love knew where Doubs would be.

Doubs was the money down guy. On 3rd and 4th down he was the guy they looked to to make something happen.

I think Doubs will be missed. I love what Golden can become but saw little to get excited about with Savion. If they stay relatively healthy, we have plenty of weapons in Reed, Golden, Watson and Kraft. I still mostly worry about the offensive line. I hope the rookie center shines and takes the starting spot because Rhyan is a below average pass blocker, who knows if Banks will play better, can our 2nd year RG improve, or maybe Rhyan beats him out. Will Tom be 100% what he was? Is our LT finally going to deliver now that he's in his best spot? Who's the swing tackle? A lot of questions there.

Don't forget that starting last season Doubs was another concussion away from not being an NFL player. I am glad he stayed injury free for the most part in 2025, but the writing was on the wall as far as his health goes. Anyone can get hurt in any game or practice, but concussions are a player wrecking injury and have long lasting effects.

This year, barring unforeseen injuries, will depend on how GB performs pass rushing, OL playing better, and CB replacement and how they produce.

Golden should've had plenty of big opportunities last year.
