Bryan Bulaga headed to the Chargers

The long time veteran tackle won't be protecting Aaron Rodgers in 2020

From Schefter:

The signing of Rick Wagner pretty much spelled the end of Bulaga's time in Green Bay and now it's official.

One last time...

Rick Wagner has been getting beat like a drum by NFC North pass rushers, just ask Matt Stafford. Now with the Bears acquiring Quinn to pair with Mack, I shutter to think about trotting out Wagner to protect Rodgers. That being said, my best guess as to why we have not released Lane Taylor is because he will take Turners spot at guard while Turner kicks out to RT which is his more natural position.

Turner was horrible in Miami when attempting to play tackle and still bad at Denver as a tackle. He may not be great at it but his better position is guard. Not even close.

We agree in the context of cap reality. Wagner is low cost, coming off a season where he was carrying a knee injury. He was previously a well respected tackle.

The comments on Turner seem to neglect the fact that he was thrown in by Miami as their third or fourth option after injuries without preparation or experience and then played as an emergency tackle in a decimated Denver line. Denver thought he showed promise at tackle, fans thought he was a bright spot on a dismal line, at least the ones I know.

As far as I am concerned, Turner was a step up at guard last year and has upside. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the mix at tackle this off season, but I hope that he is able to remain at guard this year, other than for depth.

I think he also understands that other teams have figured it out so why havent the Packers this offseason so far. How did the Bears clear up enough cap space to give Robert Quinn a "5 year 70 million" dollar deal and give Graham a "2 year 16 million" dollar deal. Whats more, how did the friggin Jaguars who a few weeks ago have around 400k yes 400k in cap space just pay Schobert 5 years 53+ mill??

The Packers made a big mistake not signing Kwiatkoski for the 3 years 21 mill the Las Vegas Raiders paid him. I understand not retaining Bulaga and Martinez, Fackrell, etc. But this team got GASHED in front of the whole world in the NFCCG in embarrassing fashion and Gute needed to do something about it and so far he hasnt.

I refuse to believe they use their round 1 on either of the ILBs worth taking there even if they were there for the taking. I get this is a deep receiver draft but I still believe Round 1 is a receiver and there is no difference maker at ILB past Queen or Murray.

Probably not with an O lineman and Martinez didn’t manage it last year. I think there is a thing called the draft and then doesn’t FA continue through the summer?

Good grief, for years we would all be asleep this week knowing we would not sign anyone! Bulaga and Martinez etc would still have moved but we would be sitting waiting to sift the residue in June.

Doesn’t mean much since both franchises aren’t that good. Jags did all that to do what next year? Their QB situation is still terrible and the def has taken steps back since 2017.

Well, until they find a QB worth a real second contract they can stock up on the players like Graham.

It doesn’t look like you understand cap reality either. As long as we have Rodgers or any good second contract QB we are not going to be able to pay aging players as if they are a good bet to continue to play like last season and at a cost that reflects that. Simple if unpleasant reality.

I think the drop in offence is slightly more than marginal and GB drafts an OL in the First or Second round like last year and is starting by mid season. I also think that this guy at ILB has the potential of being better than Martinez, so he might stick all year. Depending on how the draft falls we could end up with his mid year replacement as well... I like what we have developed at WR and have gotten in FA at WR so far. Adams, lazard, and Begelton.

Aside from the fact that the Packers cannot afford to pay everyone, the fact that Bulaga was remarkably healthy and productive in 2019 means nothing toward his ability to repeat that in 2020.

I would certainly say that the 2019 Bulaga beats the 2019 Wagner by a long shot. But 2019 Bulaga beats 2018 and 2017 Bulaga, when he played 19 of 32 possible games. And 2011-2015 Bulaga, when he missed 32 of 90 games. In 2017 alone, Bulaga missed more games than Wagner has missed in his 7 yr career.

I'm not kidding myself about the performance of the two when both are healthy. But I'm not kidding myself that Bulaga will be healthy, either.

So Bulaga gets about 10 mil per year. Same for Martinez. Graham gets 8 mil per year. Fackrell got 4.6 mil per year. That's over $30 mil per year total. Probably is somewhat less for multi year packages. But no way could the Pack afford all these guys. Other than Bulaga, the rest of these guys are either declining or wouldn't get us a Super Bowl. So BG is doing the right thing with Kirksey and Wagner. Get some value to move forward and be competitive. We don't want to put alot of value-money, time and talent- in guys that won't get us a Super Bowl.

Like everyone else here I wish the big guy well, one heck of a player for the Packers. I'm just surprised at some of the numbers these guys are getting. Still wondering how much all got upfront. Must be the effect of the new incoming CBA. (or these GM's are crazy. I vote the latter... :-) Losing Bulaga hurt, but we are seeing the outlines of Gute's draft needs show up.

Weak? Turner was fine. Wagner may not be Bulaga in his prime, but he was a good tackle prior to playing through a knee problem last year. Moreover, Bulaga is no longer in his prime. Had we kept him the cries would be how long before he goes down? I wanted him, but simply too rich.

As to Martinez, it seems the team does not feel that he fits what they need. If healthy, the guy they brought in was effective for Pettine before. That speaks volumes. I expect both positions to be addressed in the draft and I would not rule out later low cost acquisitions as well.

Right now, the one free agent player I really want back is Ervin!

Careful Coldworld --- You're using common sense analysis again... Many who post here have an extremely narrow view of the whole process... They just don't understand the "whole picture" approach being used by Gute.

Ervin will be back both as a returner & a change up in the backfield. (crosses fingers)

Wagner buys time to develop any draft pick and those on the roster. That was a shrewd move if we could not keep Bulaga affordably.

March 18, 2020 at 06:07 am

At this point, they are looking at (2) 4ths and a 6/7 for 2020 comp picks, at least based on 2019 picks. I would have liked either Martinez or Bulaga to have gotten north of $12.5-13.0 AAV to push into a 3rd round range. But such is life.

That Gute has confined himself to cap casualties (so far) has meant there are no signings to offset those two losses. If they sign a DL to about the same money as Fackrell, they would sacrifice the 6/7 unless they sign a cap casualty like Snacks Harrison or Linval Joseph. I'd like to see a DL added and like it to be a cap casualty.

If that happens, I think they can walk into the draft with nothing so pressing they must reach. Well, aside from WR. But with this draft class of WR, I think there will be value picks available each time they are on the clock.

LP - you really had your heart set on Littleton or Schobert didn't you? The Packers have a lengthy history of just not investing that much capital into the ILB position. I was not surprised they didn't chase either Littleton or Schobert given our cap availability. Kirksey was a surprise but no one knew he would be available. I would probably have preferred Kwiatkowski given they were about the same price and Kirksey has an injury history. I suspect Pettine had a lot to say about that acquisition.

At least they acquired a veteran. If he stays healthy this could work out well. If not, we will see what Oren Burks or Ty Summers can do.

He probably wanted Kwiatkoski and so did I....I didnt want to pay Littleton and Schobert got more than we could have paid also. Kwiatkoski imo is the superior player to Schobert for 3 mill + a year less.

How has not investing capital into ILB worked out for us? How did that championship game look to anyone else? DL and LB should have been top priority with a deep WR draft.

All of those players were on my wish list in cap free fantasy. The contracts they received were clearly out of our reach this year in retrospect.

As a result, it’s hard to judge what Gute would like to have done or do with this position. One could see what he did at ILB as an attempt to upgrade while keeping the cap under control. In the TT era, standing pat and hoping for a summer bargain to supplement draft and holdover depth would probably have been a strong possibility. Gute (thank heaven) did not sit on his hands and could yet draft and add late FA depth.

It seems to me this shows us that Pettine wants a type and that Martinez was not it and Burkes is not being counted on. What Gute would have done at ILB with more cash is an intriguing question. On the evidence of this, I would argue more than his predecessor. To those who cite nothing g to date, I think I’d counter with the greater needs elsewhere having to take priority until now when the cap cupboard is pretty bare.

I'm glad that Gute has the confidence and common sense to not put the Packers in a situation like the Cowboys are now in (they now have Zeke, Dak and Amari locked up and can't afford to have any decent players surrounding them). I know we have to pay AR $30+M a year, but I like what he is doing by letting Bulaga and Martinez and Fackrell leave. No way should GB be paying matching what these players are reported as receiving. I believe in the Bill B way- better to release a player one year too early than one year too late. Look how Josh Sitton, Randall Cobb and TJ Lang fared once they left. Only Cobb is still playing and he left for yet another team (Houston).

Sitton and Lang were both voted to pro bowl rosters, then the injuries laid them less than spectacular. Bulaga was never a pro bowl guy, nor an AllPro like Sitton. Selective memories.
