Bryan Bulaga Isn't Going Anywhere

The veteran right tackle is feeling good and ready for Week 1.

It seems every offseason there's some speculation (how informed it might be is up for debate) surrounding Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga and his status with the team.

Last offseason, Bob McGinn reported that the Packers had approached Bulaga about taking a paycut, a request he refused.

This offseason, Bulaga and his representatives haven't heard anything from the Packers, as the veteran offensive lineman told Michael Cohen of the Athletic.

Bulaga is set to count $8.3 million against the Packers 2019 salary cap.

While his availability is seemingly always an ongoing issue due to the plethora of injuries he has suffered over the years, the old pro battles through a ton to stay on the field. And when he does play, he is still one of the best right tackles in the game.

The Packers will undoubtedly start planning for life after Bulaga (and may have already started with the signing of Billy Turner) but for 2019, Bulaga is worth every penny the team is set to pay him for the level of play he provides.

Good. When healthy he has been very good. Perhaps this is the season that he makes it all year. The new scheme may benefit him.

It's time Bulaga gets cut. Another guy who's going to get injured and not earn his money. At some point we should move on. 8 .3 mil can be used elsewhere. He's over achieveing.

Absolutely keep Bulaga for this year. Draft his replacement in April for the 2020 season (and for if/when he misses time this year).

Bulaga is still a good RT. He was rated very high when he was on the field last season. Even if he missed 6 games this year, he'd still be worth the 8M based on what top OT make.

Stock,

Who would you suggest we replace him with? The o-line has issues already and I do not think Billy Turner is the answer long term. Even Taylor is iffy at this point. Bulaga is worth every penny right now to protect AR an 89M investment, by the way.

Given his performance the last 2 years it's hard to argue against this Dzehren.

My only question is if the 2019 Packers do use zone blocking schemes more regularly, would this not be a better fit for Spriggs? I don't know the answer to that, possibly best to see how he goes in TC and pre-season.

.... All said, his pre-draft scout report was spot on - paraphrasing here - "an up and down-player with great athleticism whose footwork and strength could be exposed at the NFL level"

Word is Spriggs is working out like a mad man and is like a totally different player. I expect big things for Spriggs this season.

But getting back to Bulaga. Glad he's back. Older vets on the o-line I actually prefer. They usually know all the tricks of their trade vs. a rookie or 2nd year guy.

In this one instance I agree with you. Start him and play him!

However, in addition I might take even a slightly different approach. Draft his replacement with someone who can move well to get outside easy enough. Spell Bulaga whenever you can and save unnecessary injury. Accomplishes saving Bulaga while giving the rookie experience. I know consistency on OL is supposed to be critical but I would give the rookie experience throughout the season during games where there are routs or unlikelihood of a team being able to bounce back. Preserve Bulaga for when really needed. Just me but believe smart approach.

As far as Spriggs he needs to be working out like his life depends on it. I hope he is performing the correct workouts meaning working on his quickness out of his stance, and moving better to get outside. Likely he needs to shed some of the weight he put on last off-season IMO.

Bulaga is a 33 life path...the number of the master teacher...he'd probably make a great OL coach down the road.

born 03-21-1989 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 +9 + 8 + 9 = 33

His jersey is 75 so 7+5=12 and 1+2=3 so 3 is also in play here. Which I THINK would mean he’s a slightly better kicker than Crosby (2).

Dragon, are you by chance Glynis McCants the numbers lady? Can you do a reading on Aaron Rodgers? He was born December 2, 1983. Also Tim Boyle born on Oct 3 1994. The future of the Packers is at stake. I want to know your take based on those numbers.

Thank you,

Dash

P.S. I just did them for the hell of it. Correct me if I am wrong but I have Rodgers at an 8 life path and Boyle at a 9. I did mine as well. I am also a 9 life path which is weird. Would be interested in what they mean as I am sure the rest here would. As many here know Dragon, I have the ability to see into the future but I never used numbers like you do. Just interested in your take. Also, isn't Bulaga actually a 6 life path not a 33?

Fascinating. I want to her website for the hell of it to look up the information myself. This is what those two particular life paths say. It sounds pretty spot on particular about Aaron Rodgers since we all know him better than Boyle. Rodgers loves money and hates taking advice which is why I feel he's going to clash with the new head coach if the head coach tries to establish dominance. As for Boyle the first sentence is all I needed to read. "Nines are natural leaders". Ladies and gentlemen, I think we found our next great young quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Would like your takes on these numbers.

Dash

(Aaron Rodgers) EIGHTS do not feel safe unless they have found a way to establish financial security. It is difficult for the 8s to take advice. When they make a choice, they must feel it is their decision, NOT SOMEONE ELSES. As a result, they do tend to learn the hard way. 8s are very honest and by being too blunt, they unintentionally hurt other's feelings. Although they can sometimes appear insensitive, what is going on inside them is the exact opposite. They do feel deeply about everything that goes on in their lives.

(Tim Boyle) NINES are the natural leaders. People often think they are in charge even if they are not. When in a store, people will often assume that they work there and will ask for help! They take care of everyone else, but need to learn to speak up when they need help, love, and hugs. The 9s often feel unloved or abandoned by their mother or father, or they feel completely responsible for them. It's hard for them to let go of the past, and it is something they need to work on in this lifetime.

I'm sorry but I really got into this numbers thing. Here's something even more crazy. I looked up a couple people for the hell of it. Tim Boyle and I were the same. Life Path of 9. Again, just for the hell of it I google Ted Thompson. His birthday is: Jan 17, 1953 - 1 +1 +7 +1+9+5+3 = 27 -----2+7= 9

Yes, Ted Thompson, Tim Boyle and Dish Riprock are all 9 Life Paths. Those two people in particular as many of you know I have been backing forever since I've been here. This blows my mind honestly.

Josh Sitton was too. TT released him when he could have traded him. Were hanging onto Bulaga to long. The 8.3 million cap is needed now. Turner can do his job. And I'm sure it would justify a OT in the draft. Time to move him.

SH,
I would agree with you 'if' Spriggs was the player we all thought he would be when TT moved up to draft him, however he has been a major dissapointment. If they cut Bulaga they would not have an experienced OT...and they would need to draft two OT's to replace him. Where now they can get by with Turner aboard by drafting one OT.

A dicey situation but think they need to keep Bulaga this year. Ideally he would make a great back up at 4 of the OL positions while someone started at OT. I think this would be where his greatest value would be even at 8.3 million if a starter went down you know you have a high quality player you can plug in without missing a beat. However, they will not put him in that role even if they had an adequate starting OT in his place.

SH that was a McCarthy thing with Sitton. My brother in the Fox Valley said Sitton' s was very vociferous in commenting on stale game plans etc. during his radio show, TV? Why would Ted move a guy w/out getting something in a trade or holding him for a comp pick? If he wanted to dump his salary and extend Bhaktiari he could have done that before the draft 2016. Taylor is at best adequate.

Bulaga has played well when healthy, but he’s struggled through a number of injuries in his career. To his credit, he’s been willing and able to play through most of those injuries.

With this being the last year of Bulaga’s contract, it will be interesting to see what moves Gutekunst makes to plan for the future at RT.

3rd highest salary cap hit for a RT this year. Still, it's not like there are great RTs out there ready to be signed on the cheap. Just one of those things where we have to hope for a healthy year but plan for the future.

Unless someone comes in and takes BB's job, he's our 2019 RT for as long as he can stay on the field. Spriggs is built for the new wide zone blocking scheme but in pass protection he's a revolving door. For all of us that were on the "In TT we trust" bandwagon the current roster proves we were hoodwinked, bamboozled.

Marcedes Lewis wasn't brought back (even after validating Bennett that MM didn't use TE's well) to blow the top off corners.... he'd need a Segway for that at his age! Interesting to hear that Spriggs is "training the house down" too. Perhaps they do validate the theory that the Packers are going to go heavily into zone blocking schemes. Could Spriggs be used as a pulling guard..... question, not statement?

I disagree. He certainly was ill fitted to the past regime's style of play but may fit the new coaches style of play better. I'd say this is the make-or-break season for Jason Spriggs - but that the Packers are still going to draft an insurance policy (or replacement) early in the draft. He may have a new lease of life as a depth piece.

Cutting yes! The money goes to a position of need. OR Extension. Most people wanted Risner. The guy needs to be replaced. What difference does it make if you do it this year. The RT position gets younger. Bulaga is another china doll. That 8.3 is not going to help on the IR. Do it before the draft. Jake Fisher and others will come in cheaper too..

GUTE is going to replace Bulaga in the draft. The 8M can be used as roll over, emergency $$ ,extending a younger player or finding post June 1 cuts to fill out the rest of the roster.
Belichick always says its better to replace someone a year early than a year to late.

When Bulaga is healthy, he is as good a tackle as there is out there, keeps those big guys out of Rodgers face. Problem is when he gets dinged up, its usually a knee, and mobility is an issue. Draft his replacement this year and as someone mentioned earlier, when possible, give the rookie some reps. I don't think Spriggs is the answer either. He is barely an adequate back up,, much less a starter along the line. GO PACK!

Bulaga is close to being shot. You can cross your fingers and hope he makes it, but shouldn’t be counted on. This is why team needs to find his replacement in this draft with early pick. Depending how their board falls they should consider pick #12. Personally I feel Oliver is only player to be taken at #12 other than OL. My preference would be take Williams and then get your TE or safety at #30

Calls for cutting one of the best RTs in the NFL protecting the flank of the most valuable players for his team in the league is not just silly, it is illogical.

Who do you replace him with?

Spriggs, who has been a liabilty to date? Turner? He hasn’t proved anything yet at T but was brought in to play LG.

Bulaga is tough, smart, a leader and a talented NFL tackle.

He starts until he cannot.

The Pack are projected to have 20M In cap room next year. The 20M has already taken into consideration Daniels, Bulaga Crosby Martinez will be free agents & off the books. Add the fact Clark will need to be tagged or extended or 5th year optioned. GB should be rolling over $8M.

Unfortunately someone needs to go & GUTE will have to make a tough call after the draft.
Cutting Spriggs & RB Bibbs would give GB about 2.8M in free cap space.
