"Chips Report" from Packers Preseason Week 3 Loss vs. Seahawks

Vince Young was the big winner in the Packers' preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks, while Graham Harrell may have punched his ticket out of town.

Our weekly "Chips Report" will always include two blue chippers (outstanding, exceptional play), two red chippers (good, though maybe not great) and two cow chips (dud performances). From the third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks...

Blue Chips

  • Quarterback Vince Young––Combined with a dreadful performance by Graham Harrell, Young may have took the lead in the competition for the No. 2 quarterback job. While he didn't complete any passes deep downfield, Young was efficient, completing six of seven passes for 41 yards and a touchdown, good for a passer rating of 130.7. Young was also able to get traction on the ground, scrambling for 39 yards on three carries. He led the Packers' to their only touchdown of the evening and kept the sticks moving.
  • Outside linebacker Nick Perry––It had been a quiet training camp for Perry thus far, not necessarily playing poorly, but not making any waves. People definitley expected more from a first round draft choice. Perry took a big step forward on Friday night, his biggest moment coming when he batted a second quarter pass by Russell Wilson that was intercepted by Casey Hayward. On the first drive of the third quarter, Perry also shed his blocker for no gain on a Seahawks run play, one of three tackles on the night for the outside linebacker.

Red Chips

  • Linebacker Brad Jones––On a night when the first-string defense got no little pass rush outside of Clay Matthews, Brad Jones did his best to chip in. He was sent on a first-down blitz on the Seahawks second drive of the game, and ended up sacking Wilson for a loss of nine yards. That was one of five tackles on the evening for Jones, which tied for the team lead and helped the Packers defense forget the loss of Desmond Bishop, if only for a night.
  • Safety Jerron McMillian––Punter Tim Masthay probably deserves a red chip of his own, but so does McMillian, who grabbed a second-quarter interception of Wilson. Thus far in his brief Packers career, McMillian has shown to be a good in-the-box safety, not afraid to mix things up and make tackles. In order to be a three-down safety, McMillian has to prove himself on the back end, making plays in space, and he did just that by on Friday by reading the quarterback and picking off a pass.

Cow Chips

  • Quarterback Graham Harrell––In the first preseason game against the Cardinals, Harrell averaged 4.0 yards per pass attempt. In the second game against the Rams, he averaged 4.4 yards per pass. Harrell bottomed out against the Seahawks, completing only six of 13 passes for 49 yards, which averaged only 3.8 yards per attempt. Granted, he wasn't helped by drops and penalties, but Harrell got his chance to play with the first-string offense when Aaron Rodgers exited the game after only one series. Harrell didn't take advantage.
  • Cornerback Loyce Means––Means' night got off to a bad start when he was flagged twice on consecutive plays, forcing Masthay to punt on three consecutive downs late in the second quarter. He later lost contain on a third-quarter play that led to a big gain for the Seahawks and then was responsible for giving up the game-winning 42-yard touchdown pass from Brady Quinn to Stephen Williams.

I would be shocked if they kept Harrell. He is just not an NFL player in any aspect.

One disappointment I had from tonight's game was watching every Seattle RB's just torch our DL and run right over the LB's and DB's.

The run D stuff Lynch. They looked good. gave up some passing plays, but part of that has to do with missing Hayward and Williams.

Just looked at the stats on ESPN. There were only about three runs given up in the first half that were more than 3 yards other than 12 on a 3rd and 21, and one scramble by Wilson on their first play from scrimmage. Not bad at all for a group that got torched by San Fran and AP last year. I thought it was definitely a step forward.

Means and Harell are both gone. Young looks like the backup. How he'll be able to handle diagnosing defenses on the sideline when ARod comes out and says "what did you see?" remains a question.

As does the kicking situation. I hope they find another vet.

And that Burnett, Jones and Harris' injuries aren't serious.

I think we've been more than fair and more than patient with Harrell and so have the Packers.

He's had every opportunity, including Young not being signed until August. And, Young had to play with second stringers, Coleman with the 3rd stringers. Stop making excuses for Harrell.

Sad to think about the amount of time and effort the Packer organization has invested in Harrell when evaluating his total lack of production. A business would never continue to employ someone who has shown no positive output. While Young has been with the team for a fraction of the time, he has demonstrated skills that can produce results. Harrell should be gone by the end of the weekend.

Here's the problem with Harrell. McCarthy, Thompson, Rodgers, et al...they all clearly like the dude as a person. It's going to have to get to the point where they separate the head from the heart. He's just not an NFL caliber talent. The good lord just didn't give him the physical tools to make it all the way to this level. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's gotta go.

More excuses about the 2's. Take a look at the run production even with the 1's all of Franklin, Harris and especially Lacy had more carries than yards. This OLine sucks at run blocking, all the pitiful excuses notwithstanding.

You're right, obviously the reasonable thing to do is get all melodramatic (everyone knows that production stays at the same level once 2s enter! pitiful excuses!) over a preseason game against a team with one of the best front sevens in football. We're doomed, and the only thing that will save us is getting snippy with each other and talking like supervillains. Speaking of which, your wretched imitation of football analysis has left me queasy.

Harris and Lacy combined for 11 rushes and -3 yards. This is something to worry about. Without a legitimate running game our playaction doesn't work. That will leave us with AR throwing way down field on a lot of plays; and then we're right back to where we were last year. All that being said, our offense wasn't the problem last year.

Harris's carries came with ones against ones, so those would be more concerning, but it was his first football in a long time so I'll cut him some slack. Lacy had the second line and Harrell at qb against a really good front seven. He had guys on him practically upon taking the handoff.

I thought the 1st and 2nd defenses looked much more physical than I expected. Russell Wilson started to look frustrated, especially after the 2nd INT. The line did a good job containing #3, and the secondary did much better after ditching the man coverage. Kept the #1 Seattle offense to 3 points over one half. That works for me. The #1 offense, with Rodgers, moved the ball just fine. Cow is drunk. This is a win for the Packers had this been the regular season.

I'm not going to complain to much about officials, especially after last years mess.
But if you touch a QB is that an automatic flag? That penalty on Manning was horrible. I understand what the league is doing, but come on.
And then later in the game with Michael, leading with the crown of his helmet. I don't know how that wasn't a penalty. I am willing to bet he will be fined for that one.

August 24, 2013 at 06:00 am

Agreed, Packsmack.

What really illustrated his lack of NFL arm strength wasn't even the deep throws for me...

It was two weeks ago when Harrell attempted a few of those WR "quick hitters" when they see a CB giving the WR a HUGE bubble at the LOS and the QB immediately tosses the ball, allowing the WR to work the open space and get an easy couple of yards, almost like a run play for the WR..

Harrell was throwing the ball with a lobbing arc instead of driving it to the WR on a frozen rope; the result was that instead of the WR having an easy 2-3 yards before the CB could close the gap, the coverage was in the WR's face by the time the ball got to him and they ended up with no gain..

That's when I conceded that all the hoopla about Harrell's improved arm strength over the last few years was nothing more than wishful thinking. He just doesn't have the cannon- I think it's why we see him getting so many batted down passes at the LOS as well.

SOrry, Graham. You're just not built for NFL level play.

The team seems to go backwards whenever Harrell is in the game. Time to find something different.

Masthay was tremendous. Nice tackle too.

Harris tweaked his knee again. Something's not right there.

Hyde is around the ball a lot.

Thought there was consistent pressure on the Seattle QB'S tonight. The first Seattle drive was a result of Wilson making plays - else the D was pretty good.

The run blocking by the second stringers was abysmal, but they were going against the first teamers for a good portion. Not even Lacy could do much with that.

Hawk even made some plays.

The Packers still look relatively small to me.

Good call on Jones and Perry. They're going to be good. Overall I thought the 1st team defense/offense looked pretty good. Harrell is truly a lost cause. He has little capability of moving the ball. Enough excuses already. It has to be Young at backup. Coverage teams were Cow chips to me. Not sure if those were second units. Adrian Peterson couldn't get 50 yds behind our backup OL. Little quality depth beyond Newhouse. A cow chip for the flag-happy officials. Jarrett Boykins keeps showing he belongs. If its possible, my appreciation of Aaron Rodgers keeps growing. Boykins did have a fumble, but that looked more like a reaction to him being surprised by the ball being there than him actually having a ball security issue. I don't know if that was him messing up by not knowing the ball was going to be there or if Harrell threw the ball too early in the route.

The Packers didn't use the third game as a dress rehearsal but as a disaster check to see what Harrell could do if he had to go in. As expected the answer against a very good D was - not much. As often as the O line was overpowered it is a bit hard to judge the QB and RB play but Rodgers did manage a drive his one series in the game.

The defense looked good and played physical and fast. Let's hope all these players leaving the game (Burnett, Jones, Hayward) are not hurt badly.

I like Crosby. Everybody here probably wonders why. His field goal kicking has been inconsistent and atrocious. I am positive that the Packers are so high on him because of his ability to minimize returns by putting the ball into the end zone often and his ability to do some great on-sides kicks. What would be great is to have that kicker that can boom the ball through the end zone as well as one who masters on-sides kicks and still makes successful field goals attempts. But before the Packers give up on him, I would hope that they would consider that a change in who does the kickoff duties or who does the field goal kicking duties may produce may produce a kicker, or a pair of kickers, that does both. Having Masthay kick field goals means the Pack has to find another holder. I am curious if having him kick off may be the solution to Crosby's issues with splitting the uprights. Residing in upstate New York, I may not be seeing what some of you may already be aware of regarding what is being done about the situation.

FYI, Crosby was 21st in touch backs last season, the big leg from early in his career is now as inconsistent as his field goal attempts. He is the best on sides kicker I have ever seen and never backs off on a tackling opportunity. However those traits do not balance his in ability to kick under PRESSURE. His kick to tie against the Colts was the worst shank (not blocked) kick I have ever seen, it ended up on the left sideline bouncing back almost parallel to where he kicked it. In McCarthy's only losing season he missed in 3 games to tie or win, two were indoors and medium range.

His touchbacks went down cuz the Packers wanted him to kick it deep, but allow a return. Even a 25 yd return from 5 yds deep, means the ball is at the 20. Most returners don't average 25 yds on returns. If the coverage is good your better off allowing a return from just in the end zone than to have your kicker boot it out of the end zone.

I noticed that. Then they posted the starting lineup with Finley at TE. Honestly, I'm digging the Amosa FB. He seems to be tough. Kuhn just seems to be a name and also a pricey FB. Pack is all about getting younger and keeping the price tag down. Kind of seems like a no brainer. Unless your running a Vontae Leach leading run game, why invest so much?

At least Kuhn got more yards than carries, which is more than you can say for Lacy (8 carries -5 yards) Harris and franklin. It's only one play and Kuhn will make this team. Get over it.

Meanwhile the Sea Hawks Christing Michael ran wild through the Packer defense and outside of the 2 int's and some nice play by Jones, the D still looks soft.

MM wants a leader in each position group. I predict that Kuhn will be that person for the RB's this year. I don't like his cap number, either; but he is integral in the punt units, and is dependable as a receiver. Obviously, pass protection is his calling card, but I don't see Kuhn going anywhere.

I do question DJ Williams, though. Not a good blocker (Quarless did much better last night), and too many drops as a receiver. Like G.Harrell, MM knows what he has and should look for higher upside players. IMO

Couldn't agree more with the chip report. Vince Young convinced me tonight he is the #2 QB. I understand he is behind in regard to learning this complex offense. However, his raw ability is far beyond that of Harrell. I'm convinced the on the run pass to Stoneburner, where Stoneburner fumbled, would not have been completed by Harrell. He was missing bad on some throws. VY also seems calmer and more relaxed. There is no excuse for Harrell to be struggling this bad in an offense he knows very well.

Brad Jones and Nick Perry looked good as well.

You're right, it was Coleman. Too many beers at this point...I guess that proves my point even more. Coleman, a guy who will not make the final roster cut, scrambled to the left and threw across his body to Stoneburner. Some would say easy throw....but that throw goes over the TE's head if thrown by Harrell.

I remember my comment about three weeks ago......Harrell is terrible. He needs to go. Please usher him to the door. In fact, he was terrible the last two seasons. Packers wanna bees sent messages like "Oh you are a head coach now", "you know it all". Yes. I do. Now that we have established that, we need to send Crosby on his way. But what about the next kicker? Let's hire a high school kicker. It would be better than Crosby. Remember that. In December, Crosby kicking and he misses......................

Pretty good showing overall by the Pack. more so considering both our first round OTs are out, along with both our top WRs.

As said elsewhere, I think we come away happier with what we have seen, than the Seahawks.

If Rodgers and Matthews stay healthy, we win a lot of games this season.

Vince Young did fine for what little he played, but I'm not sure if he is blue chip worthy. He's definitely more athletic than Harrell, and I appreciate that part of his game. But the playbook still gets a lot smaller when he goes in. He did not attempt anything last night other than short passes. I'm not sold that he can win for the Packers in anything other than spot duty. He should get a longer look in the 4th game, and so should Coleman. I'd like to see if Coleman can put anything together when he is not running for his life. Let him have a series with the #1 O.

I'm shocked that you guys aren't more concerned with the injuries to Harris, Hayward, Burnett, and Jones.

It should be the topic of every post on here.

The defense just got gutted, and we're now down to 1 legit NFL running back.

We're talking hamstrings and knees here.

Especially Hayward. Re-tweeked the same hammy... THAT'S NOT GOOD.

These guys are most likely all going to miss the opener at least. Probably won't see some of them until after the bye.

Everything else that went on in last night's game is unimportant.

Defense looks good vs. balanced offense attacks. But teams with pure passing attacks can put up lots of points. Third and <10 continues toexpose the underbelly of the coverage--no blanket coverage or "downhill" playing inside linebackers to destroy the underneath passing game. Was hopeful Manning or Barrington (the latter still with hope) would be the player AJ is not.

Palmer a keeper. Only going to play faster.

Dontae gets a pass because still injured. But desperately need to get pass rush out of him.

DL looked great against inside runs--Time to let Pickett's (thank you for your wonderful service) salary go to keep Boyd and Miller and let them grow.

Would much rather keep Banjo than Jarret Bush, save money and not have to watch Bush try to cover anyone.

Secondary still a mess without Hayward, Williams and a developing House.

Wish they keep Lacy, Starks, Green and Harris, all who offer positive plays. Lose/Trade Franklin and Kuhn...Franklin pick was just a hedge of Lacey who is definitely the real McCoy.

He was released per the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinal. I think that balloon he threw on the long sideline pass that hung was the last straw. Hard to feel sorry for him, with salary/playoff shares he made a couple million dollars and got a Super Bowl ring.

I like a lot of things about this team. I think the defense looks more solid and deeper although I wish Capers would scale back on the "schemes" and just play smash- mouth football more often. Lacy is a huge upgrade at RB BUT the O'line will probably hold us back from having a really effective running game. Sure woulda been nice to have Sherrod and Bulaga for Lacy to run behind. As it is our O'line looks pretty weak. EDS is a backup at best.

True, but it's a long season and I expect the guys with the hamstrings to get back. I doubt seriously if we beat the 49ers with or without the hamstring gang. Over the long haul our biggest worry is the O'line. EDS is overmatched and our 2 tackles just aren't going to provide anything in way of a running game.

That would be my guess regarding Pease. They've done it in the past where they released a guy on the 1st cut then put him on PS tho. DeShawn Wynn, but he was on the team the previous year, had some off-field issues IIRC and was coming back from injury. That's not the case w/ Pease.

Starks is gone. Green, I think he might make it. Showed a nice burst on Friday.

Right now the only way I see Starks making it is if the injury to Harris is major. I think Green made the team. He showed real burst in the last game.

Green sticks. Made more plays than Starks. Expected it all offseason it would come down to one spot between them and always thought Green would win out.

Could be.
Starks just seems hurt all the time but when he does play he looks good.
Green is tough to evaluate since I'm not sure we've ever seen him TOTALLY healthy. But he gets credit from me for toughing it out as well as he did last year. After which he admitted the knee still hurt like hell!

Now you're a clairvoyant Straw? Do you even know what that means Strawman Stroh?

I think Green is a better third-down back than Franklin, though that isn't saying much (yet). As for Starks, much likely depends on the severity of Harris' knee injury. The scenario where both Starks and Green make the final cut may not be that far-fetched.

If Harris is out indefinitely, I would expect both to have a legit shot of making it.

What's the rule on when you can sign people to the PS? I know there's a time period that you have to wait, but is that relative to the final cut down date, or relative to the date that you cut someone? If the latter, maybe they're trying to make it harder for someone to claim him. Who knows.

I believe its 2 days after the final cutdown. I know its after the final cutdown tho. I believe 48 hrs to give all teams a chance to look at all the FA available.

Not surprised about harrell, but the hype about Young is so overdone. The guys had thrown more INTs, had bad passes and even ha balls fall out of his hand in practice than I like to discuss. One decent series against another's team backs ups doesn't cut it for me(besides the fact that he threw what would have been a int against the 1st strig). He other drive was as pitiful as BJs. Good luck- what are the pack going to do next week if youn throws 4 or 5 picks?

Agree ColoradoPF. This is simply a case of Young being less awful than Harrell. Still kinda awful though.

Oh I see you no fan of VY. Maybe the 31-19 as a QB help his case that he can win games. Maybe you just under rate him. Let talk about him at end of the season.

I still wonder why they brought him in so late. And if they liked him why didn't they bring him in vs. Giorgio?

I heard the kid has a great leg.

And why was he sitting around waiting for a call? I hope he's great, though.

Either way the extra competition seems to be working for Crosby, who in the end I believe will end up being the kicker.

At this point I just want anyone that can be accurate. Points are to valuable in close games.
