"Chips Report" from Packers Week 11 Win vs. Eagles

Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers were the stars of the show for the Packers in a 53-20 win over the Eagles.

Our weekly "Chips Report" will always include two blue chips (outstanding, exceptional play), two red chips (good, although maybe not great) and two cow chips (dud performances). From the Green Bay Packers' 53-20 win over the Philadelphia Eagles...

Blue Chips

  • Linebacker Clay Matthews—Despite the Eagles getting a sneak peek of Matthews' debut at inside linebacker a week earlier, there's nothing they could do gameplan around him. Matthews once again looked solid at his new position, but he remained a dangerous pass rusher coming off the edge. He wasn't fooled on a second-quarter bootleg by Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez, dropping him for a 10-yard loss on third down and limiting the Eagles to a field goal instead of a touchdown in the early going. Matthews finished with five tackles, one for a loss, a pass defensed and two quarterback hits.
  • Quarterback Aaron Rodgers—It was an efficient day for Rodgers, throwing for 341 yards and three touchdowns while once again avoiding an interception, extending an NFL record in the process. The Packers quarterback surpassed 300 pass attempts at Lambeau Field without throwing an interception, a home streak that's without equal in league history. Rodgers also got the job done with his feet, rushing three times for 32 yards, an average of 10.7 yards per carry. For a second consecutive game, Rodgers played so well early in the game and got the Packers out to such a commanding lead, he got most of the fourth quarter off.

Red Chips

  • Packers starting offensive line—It's difficult to single out any one player, but the entire line played well as a unit, keeping the pocket clean and opening up holes for more than 100 rushing yards. Considering guards Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang continue to nurse injuries and miss practice time, their performance was particularly notable. By getting out to an insurmountable lead, the Packers were able to take them out of the game early and give them some rest. Unfortunately, the second-string offensive line didn't play nearly as well, as both Lane Taylor and J.C. Tretter showed they have plenty of room for improvement. David Bakhtiari, Bryan Bulaga and Corey Linsley are also deserving of being singled out for strong  performances.
  • Linebacker Julius Peppers—He may have made only one tackle on the afternoon, but Peppers' impact goes beyond a mere tallying of tackles. He contributed to two turnovers, obviously one being his 52-yard interception return for a touchdown after dropping into coverage. He also helped to force another by getting in the face of Sanchez, hurrying an ill-advised throw and an interception by cornerback Tramon Williams. Had Casey Hayward not been Johnny on the Spot on the fumble return for a touchdown, Peppers may have gotten yet another, escorting Hayward into the end zone.

Cow Chips

  • Punter Tim Masthay—The shortcomings on special teams weren't solely Masthay's fault, but he certainly didn't help matters. His biggest miscue of the day was a snap going through his hands on an extra-point attempt, one of two botched point-after attempts on the day. Another was blocked. On Masthay's lone punt, the net distance was just 34 yards when pinning the Eagles inside the 20 shouldn't have been out of the question. He was also part of a unit that got a punt blocked and was the holder on Crosby's lone field-goal miss of the season that wasn't blocked.
  • Safety Morgan Burnett—Like Peppers, tackles don't tell the whole story. Burnett led the Packers with 10 tackles, but he hurt the team's cause with a costly miss of wide receiver Jordan Matthews, which led to a 10-yard touchdown for the Eagles. Other Packers defensive backs like Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward and Micah Hyde made up for mistakes with turnovers and touchdowns, but Burnett didn't make any such impact plays.

I hope Clay is starting to like ILB, because I think he'll being getting more snaps inside.

Special teams was pretty bad today. Clay's double jump to deflect that Sanchez pass was brilliant. Sanchez probably soiled himself when he turned on that bootleg and had 52 right in his lap. Great game.

That double jump was insane...surprised he didn't shred his hamstring.

I was worried he did. Did you see him hopping around on one leg when he came down?

And the belt? I think Micah Hyde should get a red chip.

I agree. Not only the PR, but he also dove to deflect that pass (maybe his best play of the day) and was generally solid in coverage.

Who said Hyde wasn't a playmaker? Pick last week, punt return this week, those sound like plays to me. He's definitely developing, TT has had a couple of very nice drafts consecutively.

Well, last week was his first career INT...

(That actually really surprised me...I would have sworn he had some last year.)

Excellent point AJ, Hyde has been a great pick for the Packers. Either he's gone or commenting under a different name but there was a a dude named "Stroh" who used to blast Hyde because of his 40 time at the combine, even after his excellent rookie season which never made sense to me. I've always said the guy is just a football player and a damn good one. 40 times in spandex don't always tell the whole story.

There should be cow chips in a 30 point win. Plus a record setting back to back 50+ point games. shame shame.

Until I have watched it play out, it never occurred to me how Peppers size could be such an advantage in coverage. He's just so huge. His size and wingspan increase the area he can cover and cuts down on angles available to QBs. And, of course, someone his size should not be able to move like he does.

And that's just "bonus" stuff since his primary role is rushing the QB and he's doing that very well, too.

I'm surprised at how naturally he has made the switch to 3-4 OLB from 4-3 DE. I guess he always knew it because he wanted to go to a 3-4 after leaving Carolina. Can you imagine if he'd have made the transition with 3 less years of wear and tear on his body?

I think OLB in a 3-4 always was his natural position. that's why he never hesitated to sign. He was so excited to play OLB, and it shows. If he had played that position his whole career the number of his impact plays would be huge. Not only is he really big, but he is also extremely fast for such a big man. Yet all my neighbors who were Bears fans (lived in Chicagoland for a few years) insisted he was done 2 years ago. Glad that Young and Houston experiment is working out so well for them.

Don't forget about that sweet Allen signing! I'm from Illinois originally, all my buddies back there assured me before the season that Peppers was washed up and they got the better deal in Allen.

Lol!

I feel like there will be some kind of asterick next to Rodgers career when he is done. Guess I don't care about stat lines that much, but i don't recall seeing a QB get to sit out so many quarters of football before because of enormous leads. It happened in 2011. Its happening now. I don't remember it being like that in the favre era. Just something to add when we're doing that comparing greatest QB thing in the off season.

Guess the same could be said for peyton.

That's a good point...by the end of the season, he'll likely have sat out 1 1/2 worth of games due to blowouts.

I wonder if that'll hurt or help his MVP chances

Matt Flynn has finished up 4 of 5 home games this year. Had they not played one of their worst halves of football in a long time vs NJY in the opener, it could well have been 5 for 5.

Prior to the Iggles 1st TD, the Packers had outscored their opponents by 177-9 when Rodgers was the QB in Lambeau since that atrocious start vs NJY. That's an amazing run.

Jim McMahon got into quite a few games in '96, but it was usually just for the last series or two. Never for whole quarters like we're seeing with Rodgers/Flynn this year.

Gotta give MM some props for the offensive game plan. The O came out and just dropped a hammer on a D that had been playing well. Also, props to the Oline for keeping Rodgers clean. That's a D that can get after the qb.

Watching from the stands, it was very impressive. The score actually doesn't reflect the dominance. Sanchez had receivers running open, but he couldn't put the ball where it needed to be. Rodgers is just scary good right now.

I loved Peppers high-stepping it into the end zone with a guy on his back.

He's our best TE. I think he'd love to get more offensive looks at TE. Very soft hands, incredible size, fast runner. I'd like to see corners and free safeties try to square him up!

I am so impressed with the play of the O-line. They are really playing well as a unit, looks like we have our Center for the next decade (I'm sure Rodgers is ready to stop the musical chairs at the position).

MVP-

Watching Manning lose at the lowly Rams and Brady's 2 first half picks... I would think Rodgers has to be the front-runner at this moment in time, eh?

Linsley is awesome. Maybe one of the strongest guys in the NFL. That interior OL is as good as it gets in the NFL.

Linsley was an absolute steal. TT should trade the top 2 picks and get extra 4th and 5th rounders. He looks like an pro bowler already.

If one mussed tackle is the best we can do for a cow chip, that's a really good sign.

Like to give some sort of chip to HHCD. He got dinged on a tackle, came back shortly thereafter, and got involved in a couple of other violent tackles. I kind of feel bad for the guy because we keep hearing about how the Pack wanted Shazier, but Ha-Ha just brings the lumber week after week.

What, no love for Guion? Thought he had a great game and was worthy of a red if not a blue chip. Wasn't sure originally, but he's been a real asset the past few games.

Yeah, that big hit he put on Sanchez and the takedown of McCoy later were both beautiful. Amazing what winning does to transform these castoff big men.

They could easily have called a penalty on that hit. However, it seems to me that the natural reaction of a QB about to be hit is to go into a sort of fetal position, which involves the head going down a foot or more. I think that, once QB's do this, and the head is now where the chest had been a second earlier, there should be no penalty unless it's clear that the defender was going out of his way to do damage to the head.

I am surprised by Burnett's cow chip. He missed a tackle, sure, but I thought overall he provided very good run support and played well. I suppose someone had to get a cow chip. Back-up O-linemen were not good. Bulaga and Bakhtiari held up very well against a bevy of good edge players. That might be a function of playing on grass in the cold. Linsley had a couple of bad runs, but still had a good day. I would like to see Adams be a little more productive, but I loved seeing a couple of receptions by the TEs. BTW, CMIII had a sack, didn't he?

I thought Lane Taylor did a good job on that short-and-goal play where the Pack featured six (or was it seven) linemen. The play seemed designed to run behind Taylor, possibly a reprieve for the play in New Orleans which failed.
