Packers Select Lukas Van Ness in 2023 NFL Draft - Round 1

Green Bay uses the 13th overall pick on the powerful edge rusher from Iowa.

Lukas Van Ness, Iowa, EDGE

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

Height: 6'5"

Weight: 272lbs

40-yard dash: 4.58

Shuttle: 4.32

3-cone: 7.02

Vertical jump: 31"

Broad jump: 9'10"

Bench: 17 reps

CAREER NOTES:

Van Ness signed with Iowa after playing his high school ball at Barrington High School in Illinois. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2020 before impressing the following season with 33 tackles, 8.5 for loss, and a team-high seven sacks in 14 appearances. Van Ness did not start a single game at Iowa, yet still earned second-team All-Big Ten accolades in 2022 after leading the team with 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He had two blocked punts in a single game versus Iowa State, which should make him popular with Green Bay's special teams co-ordinator Rich Bisaccia. Van Ness was twice named Academic All-Big Ten.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/lukas-van-ness/32005641-4e63-9767-91e9-a7147693e290

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

"NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell walks to the podium on Thursday, April 27, just a few moments after the New England Patriots select Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with the 14th overall pick to crush the souls of Packer Nation, who had foolishly held out hope that the Ohio State product would have been the first wide receiver Green Bay selected in the first round since 2002. Goodell taps on the microphone and announces, “With the 15th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select Lukas Van Ness, defensive lineman, Iowa.” With his length (6′5′′), power, and age (he’ll turn 22 in July), Van Ness fits the bill of what Brian Gutekunst is looking for in the first round. If he’s on the board when the Packers are on the clock, Gutekunst selecting Van Ness will surprise nobody." - Brennen Rupp in the Cheesehead TV Draft Guide.

COMMENTARY:

Van Ness fits the mold of the types of edge rushers the Packers love. He's big and super athletic, registering a 9.39 Relative Athletic Score (RAS) out of a possible 10 compared to previously drafted defensive ends.

The former Iowa EDGE has serious power and is a regular threat to run through an offensive tackle's face. While he currently lacks a finesse element to his pass rush, Van Ness is still young -- he doesn't turn 22 until July -- and can develop that side of his game. Van Ness didn't show the propensity to use a speed rush around the edge on tape, but his 4.58 40-yard dash shows he does have that tool in the bag.

He holds up well versus the run, too, providing a disruptive presence without going big-game hunting and losing sight of his assignment.

At his size, the Packers should be able to move Van Ness along the defensive line to target an opponent's weak spots. He plays with great effort and also has experience dropping into coverage.

In short, Van Ness is a quintessential Green Bay EDGE and a very on-brand selection from Brian Gutekunst.

BG drafting ceiling.
Young, traitsy guy, who reminds me a lot of Aaron Kampmann.

Yep, and Yep. We need another blue collar Kampman. my belief was GB was going to pick Skronski until he was nabbed two picks earlier. We all saw what happened to JSN, ESPN blew off the hamy issues--i'm just glad Balt took Flowers one pick ahead of the Queens as they'd have gotten Flowers to go with Jefferson. Still plenty of fine players left, 42 and 45 are both key...let's see if GB is targeting a player and will trade up to get him earlier in the second. Plenty of good TE's and O/T's. Also, all the safeties!! GPG

I'll hold back my opinion about the new Lock Ness Monster. I have to trust Gutey and his team.
I was hoping for NSmith out of Georgia though.

What an enjoyable morning it has been in Texas!! A beautiful day, even though a storm is predicted. And I've been enjoying the coffee and reading everything I can about Van Ness, and after everything.....I like this guy. I should have been able to predict this, but I was just so wrapped up in improving the offense that I couldn't see the merit in drafting a guy like this in the first.

BUT.....it confirms the organization's values. Don't take offensive skill position players in the first round, except for QB. Draft defenders in the first round. And as Gutekunst said today, they prioritize the pass rush.

I wanted them to abandon 20 years of a strategy that has worked pretty well because I thought we should make an exception because it was Love's first year, and because we needed to improve the offense. I give Gutekunst credit for standing firm and not making exceptions. This gives us protection against injury and flexibility in dealing with PSmith's future on the team.

XXXXXXXXXX

The 20 year strategy also has featured a belief that we can draft good WRs on Day Two of the draft. Hoping massively for Tillman and Rice today.

I know the kid has a lot of "Promise" but Personally, I wish they'd have taken JSN. I mean Joe Barry can't do shit with 7 first round picks. Does the Packers front office really feel a 8th will make a difference? Maybe the injury scared them off, that's understandable. But DAMN, they BETTER get Love some Weapons...FAST!!!

I hear ya Murf7777... That HAS been in the back of my mind too. I'll patiently wait to see how this all plays out, tomorrow especially and the rest of the draft.

I'll be okay if the take a TE and WR in the 2nd. Very few WR's in the draft fit the Packers tastes so it will be interesting because we KNOW there will be a run before they pick at 42 again.

Great question. You have to know IOWA's program. Kirk Ferentz the HC of Iowa has a 'Seniors First' program. He has always been that way. Although Van Ness started well over 1000 snaps, he was never an actual "game day" starter on the roster due to the Senior players ahead of him.

If Van Ness had played at say WI or Ohio State, he would have been a starter 100%.

so glad Washington survived. He's my guy for TE but if he's too expensive (Gutey doesn't move for him) then Musgrave, Kraft & Schoonmaker in that order. Don't be surprised if GB drafts 2 TE's! Hawkeye LaPorta is lurking as well. My gut tells me GB drafts Kraft @ #73

WR's? Yes, they'll go for at least 1, but there's still good O/T's and 2 good safety's (Battle or Brown on my wish list). But perhaps really would like to see Cody Mauch next as he might go in the 30's. I bet GB is tracking him as he might be another Zach Tom type. GPG

Nick....I agree with so much of what you say , but this Barry-bashing isn't warranted, IMO.

7 first rounders. Stokes lost for the season. Gary for half the season. Wyatt played very little. Walker played a lot and made his share of rookie mistakes.
Alexander and Clark are top players at their positions. And Savage, despite inexplicably only playing 1 snap in two different games, still finished 6th in total defensive snaps in a secondary that led the league in fewest completions allowed, was 3rd in interceptions, 6th in pressure % (despite losing Gary for half the season). We're not an easy team to pass against.

You don't like the fact that we gave up 5.0 yards per attempt because like most people, you'd rather see teams throw on us for 7.0 yards per attempt. I think that ESPECIALLY when you're playing a good QB who gets 10+yards per attempt on a good day, you're way ahead to let teams grind the ball on the ground until you get to the redzone. Especially if you can put enough points on the board that the other team CAN'T just hand it off every time.

I would urge you, and some of the other calmer heads here, to reexamine your opinion of the defense.

Good enough pick. Van Ness has some outstanding physical traits and some things he needs to work on. Yeah, I don't think he's the reason Gute wanted 13. I do think Van Ness would have been there at 15.

NE traded back, 14 to 17 and picked up pick # 120. I'd have done that.

all one needs to do in these circumstances is to watch the Steelers too! They probably also were coveting LVN. Was very pleased...and, my praying gut hopes for starting level while Rashan has more time to come back up to speed. I see Van Ness as another relentless Hawkeye, much like Kampman. Love the pick and say what you will--this was the pick!
Now....Barry needs to really work this guy in and hopefully we can develop into a CM3 machine!! Folks we can always use depth on the edge as this will also strenthen run defense. Right?

He’s right in the range I expected. One of less than 5 picks that I would have considered at 13 without feeling I had to trade down if I could, and the other one was Murphy. They obviously preferred Van Ness. Looks like we stole a March in the pats with that little jump to 13.

If they like Van Ness that much, the marriage with need means I have to put aside my wish for another pick, which was strong. We dodged some bullets tonight and got a good one. Now let’s get Washington and some offense tomorrow.

I’m so glad we didn’t get Myles Murphy. Luke had far more production, in fewer snaps, and his numbers were ascending. Murphy’s numbers took a significant dip from 2021-2022.

I like the Van Ness pick better that Myles Murphy. LVN appears to have a much higher ceiling.

Considering Gary’s development time, they haven’t gotten a lot of value out of that #12 pick. Just as he gets productive, they have to think about a second contract — with the added complication of how he’ll recover from the ACL. Decent player, but not a great pick. Hopefully Van Ness can develop his NFL chops quicker.

Part of that development time was because they didn’t need to play him because they had high level talent in front of him. Personally I think that was a mistake and they should’ve played him more. The talent was always there, just needed to be released more. I hope they don’t take the same conservative approach with Van Ness.

Stockholder, this might be the reason....

Nolan Smith ER/LB Georgia
by Drew Boylhart • March 17, 2023
STRENGTHS
Nolan is a very athletic Edge Rusher. He has done a solid job at that position for his college team. He has quick feet and is very fast, faster than most receivers and cornerbacks in this draft. He has excellent size and overall athleticism to play more than one position in the front seven of a team’s defense. Nolan was not on many teams’ “Have to have him” radar until he hit the combine and worked out and showed everyone that maybe…just maybe he has been playing out of position for Georgia. It makes you wonder why?

CONCERNS
I think it’s a red flag when a player with this much athleticism, size, and flat-out speed is not playing off the line of scrimmage where a team can take full advantage of his God Given talents all over the field. Then he slipped up in an interview and suggested that he struggled to learn the concepts when playing off the ball. So, they put him on the line of scrimmage to make it easier for him to learn. I guess that’s why he plays with so much hesitation and not to his God Given Talent off the snap of the ball. He’s an honest person.

BOTTOM LINE: 2.33
There is no doubt that Nolan has been playing out of position. He is an off the line of scrimmage linebacker and he good be one of the best. When he drops in coverage you see the athleticism and it makes you drool with envy. I hope once he gets into the NFL and coaches spend time with Nolan that he will break out as a pure linebacker. He can become a good edge rusher but he has to start playing more to his talents and not thinking so much. His college coaches have set the base for Nolan and put him on the field and although Nolan still struggled to play up to his athletic talent at least he has learned. I don’t know how long it will be before Nolan can impact at a pure linebacker position, but I do understand that he should be worth the wait of his first contract to find out. BTW, don’t tell me workouts and the combine don’t matter. I don’t care how nice a kid Nolan is in interviews, until he worked out, no one thought of him as a potential 1st Round draft pick, no one.

I doubt he slims down, and damn if we didn’t need 5T. We’ve needed that for years! Run stop arguably our greatest need since before the Smith Bros signings. Sadly, that did little to help our run stop.

Finally, the Packers added one of the most complete DEs in the draft.

Thank God.

Felix consensus board was pick number 45. I understand you like the speed guy but the Packers prefer size and that is why they took Van Ness. If the Packers would’ve taken Felix this board would’ve been pissed for over drafting him. Not saying you’re wrong or right, that’s just the reality of the type of player the Packers like.

Not so fast.

Both LVN & Felix had 46 pressures last year. LVN didn’t start one game.

Felix had 8 sacks last year. LVN had 9, in 100+ fewer snaps.

PLUS, and this is a big one, Felix’s RUN STOP SUCKS.

Run stop was arguably one of the Packers greatest overall team needs. LVN is considered one of the very best at Run D amongst the entire DE class.

Then get a DT in rd three, We are talking about the Edge. The Pass Rush. Judas Priest, quit making alibis for this guy. Felix with a Full repertoire of moves, technical Hand usage, Punch to the OT with his fast first step. He knocked OTs on their asses, I believe he can handle the run game; 25.5 Tackles for LOSS, 19.5 Sacks, 8 forced fumbles=Strips sacks, 23 reps. long arms. Three year production. Two-Time All Big 12. 2022 First Team All-American. Worked out and tutored by his brother an NFL Tight End. A guy who can step right into the spot, not wait two-three years. Zach Harrison will be better than Van Ness.

“Alibis?” Are you kidding?

I’m looking at the 2022 numbers:

663 total D snaps
388 pass rush snaps
8 sacks
9 hits
28 hurries
46 tackles
11 TFL

478 total D snaps
271 pass rush snaps
9 sacks
6 hits
31 hurries
37 tackles
10.5 TFL

Who had the better production in pass rush 2022? Van Ness’ numbers the latter.

Van Ness out produced Anudike-Uzomah in 117 fewer pass rush snaps in 2022.

LVN is a physical freak with proven potential and he’s one of the best run stop DEs in the class. He also is able to switch inside to DT. After looking more closely, his ceiling appears to be much higher.

Hey, I wanted Felix too, but… R2, and I preferred Isaiah Foskey there.

I watched "Poirot" and slid into "Morse" to avoid the Inane chatter with a carnival sideshow to be underwhelmed once again with the reach for another tweener. Nobody wanted to trade up with Gutedkunst? I still prefer Felix.

Sporting News:
13. Green Bay Packers (from Jets): Lukas Van Ness, EDGE, Iowa

Grade: C
There’s no doubt Van Ness has first-round upside with his raw pass-rush skills, standing out with his explosiveness and relentless in getting after the quarterback. But he’s also a bit of a project with limited experience for a team that had more pressing offensive needs at wide receiver, tight end and tackle to boost new young starting quarterback Jordan Love.

Achtung! And Broderick Jones goes with the next pick to the power running Steelers. So he rates Nijman on the same scale as Jones?

14. Pittsburgh Steelers (from Patriots): Broderick Jones, OT, Georgia

Grade: A+
The Steelers nailed this first draft pick for GM Omar Khan. They realized that with Johnson, Wright and Skoronski off the board, they had to jump the Jets to get the other surefire first-round tackle. Jones has a pleasing combination of strength and quickness to both help second-year QB Kenny Pickett big-time as a major upgrade over Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle and get downfield in run blocking for third-year running back Najee Harris.

10. Chicago Bears (from Eagles through Saints): Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee

Grade: B-
The Bears fill their massive need for a pass-protecting left tackle for Justin Fields, but it’s not Johnson, Peter Skoronski or even Broderick Jones. Wright compares favorably as a blocker to new Bengal and former Chief Orlando Brown Jr. He rose up boards late by showing teams more athleticism in his powerful frame, but should have gone later in the round vs. the other available tackles.

I pegged him as a Right tackle?

I put very little credence into any one source. . You can find good ones and bad on most players. That is why 50% of first rounders never even get a 5th year option. If you are going to consider a source I think a Consensus of most all of them would be most accurate. The consensus had him at #15. Broderick Jones was #18. Either would be good choices for the Pack.

Smith is a 4:3 guy if you want him to have a shot at starting, which any first rounder should be picked to do. Sometimes you just have to say great player, but not a fit. That’s the price we pay for LaFleur and Barry. Choices …

I did a little survey on where he was projected to go.

Reuter, over on CBS, PFF, and Draftek all had him going at 14 or earlier. WalterFootball and a few others had him in the 20-25 range. The HuddleReport had him at 15.

Gutekunst clearly stated, and has shown, that he prioritizes pass rush. This will help.

If Van Ness "can be used all along the defensive line"...why didn't Iowa use him that way and keep him on the the field and at least start?

What I see on tape is a bull rusher mostly. And kind of stiff. Slow feet. No bend or any real pass rush toolkit beyond pinning his ears back. NFL eats up bull rushers. Bahktiari and Jenkins and Tom too...just steer them out of the QBs passing lane with their quick feet. Maybe Barry can coach him up now that he has 8 first rounders to experiment with in quarters/soft zone. I don't think he passes Enagbare on the depth chart.

This was a RAS reach...NFL.com had him at 26 and a good starter in 2 yrs...For the 13th pick of the draft! Hope Van Ness exceeds expectations beyond what he shows on video.

On to the second round.

This is exactly what I saw. A 3rd round reach like every Packer First round defensive player. There is no third round curse, we just pick ours in the first.
I'm at my breaking point with the FO with first rounders. They have a plan they stick to that has netted them a mediocre defense after 12 years. It does not work!

You're entitled to your opinion, Blockdoc, but very reputable draft analysts like Chad Reuter, PFF, Tony Pauline, etc. disagree with you.

Referencing the mediocre defense....we gave up two more points than KC last year. Did they also have a mediocre defense? Yet they won the Super Bowl? Is that possible? How? Oh, that's right....KC moves the ball and scores points. Maybe that's why they're the reigning champs and we missed the playoffs.

As Cheech Marin said to Kevin Costner in Tin Cup "Sometimes, par is good enough to win". You can win quite a few games with an average defense. Ask Andy Reid.

49 Pressures and 9 sacks last year.

“NFL.com had him at 26”. Yes, that is one source, the consensus had him at 15. I think using the average of 30+ is better than one source. The man put on 50lbs of muscle in 2.5 years and still runs a 4.58 with top end 10 and 20 yd, a great 7 cone. The metrics show he has quick feet. He could put on more or take some off without losing much it seems. I’m not saying he is going to be great, but it easy to cherry pick information to support your opinion.

Lucas Van Ness only played for 2 years.

In 2021 he had 378 B Gap snaps. In 2022 he had 155 B Gap snaps, and 242 Outside Tackle snaps.

Quite frankly, this is exactly the kind of player we needed at DE. A great, versatile 3-5T, with big production numbers to prove his worth, and a ton of untapped upside. Huge ceiling.

Rashan Gary came close in 2021 where he was top 5 in basically every pass rushing category and had 5 sacks in his first 4 games last season before he got hurt. His best running mate has been Preston Smith because Z-Smith was hurt. He routinely gets double teamed and he's still affecting the game. A piece that can blitz from any position (like Z Smith) would really throw opposing offenses that already have to plan for Gary and Clark, now with Wyatt and LVN as well? The Packers could have one of the best fronts in the NFL if Wyatt takes the leap and LVN can get 5-6 sacks.

I was not happy with Gary pick..Thought he was a project...and he was. After 3 years Gary was coming on strong...then got injured. Gary has a good motor and wants to be great...Nothing wrong with that. Personally I would rather spend $ on defense that's proven for the weak spots and draft offensive talent. Either way, not too many high end players want to come to GB weather and small market so I see draft and develop mentality for everything they can. We were fortunate to land "Z" and Preston...which made Gary pick more of a head scratcher to me. I wonder if Gary stays in GB or flys away?

I can. I hated the Gary pick. Never thought in a million years Gutey would even consider Gary at 12, but he did.

But, once he was a Packer, you have to root for them. I was so happy Gutey took Van Ness instead of JSN, it didn't matter to me. I know JSN was a favorite among some. Just not me.

I like LVN. I think he'll be better than Gary, tbh. We needed another Pass Rusher, and they get paid to make the decisions. I think he'll be a beast like Maxx Crosby in a couple years.

Of the bigs I had on my list of picks at #13, OT’s Broderick Jones, Darnell Wright, Edges Myles Murphy and Lukas Van Ness. Van Ness has the most upside. He’s young and not as experienced, but still put up some good numbers not even being a full time starter. If the Packers can coach him on some better technique and recognition, the sky is the limit. He has physical ability and desire. I’m good with the pick. Now let’s get a TE or two.

Theyre gonna put him on the same diet they did with Gary, who has lost nearly 20 pounds since coming into the league and gained explosiveness because of it. I would expect him to be down around 260 by year 2 and be ready to ball out. What he is now, isnt the player hes going to become.

Yeah so was Gary when he was drafted. Not sure if you remember, but he was about 280 pounds of pure chiseled stone. They had him scale back the powerlifting and exchanged power for explosiveness. They'll do the same with LVN. He's not gonna be a 5 tech. However, he may end up being used like Zadarius Smith where they rush him inside from time to time.

Van Ness - very fast in the 40 yard dash for a fellow his size, but 17 reps on the bench press is pretty low - Van Ness was near the bottom of Edge Rushers in the bench press:

He has 34" arms. Ever bench press with 34" arms?

I benched 275lbs as a 5'9" 185lb QB as a Senior in HS, but my arms were only 28 .5" too. Granted, I threw 110 lb alfalfa bales all summer from the time I was 11 - 12 years old, so I was pretty stout to begin with, but you get my point.

I could probably come close to 10 reps right now of 225 at 61 years old, but my arms are still only 28,5" long which makes it a lot easier to bench. OTs on my college team hated I could bench more than some of them because their arms were so long. I found it hilarious.

Van Ness may be a little low on the number of bench presses, but he is big and fast. It's possible for a player to get stronger and increase the number of times he can bench press, but it's unlikely that a player will become taller and faster. I think our first round draft choice will excel.

JB, if you take some time to dig, you'll find articles quoting Gary as saying he'll be ready for the start of the season.

I would view this more as a move to improve depth at a priority position and simultaneously give us some options with PSMith next year, because he's only a $6.4 million cap hit this year, but next year it's $16 million. He will turn 31 this season.

Given all that, and that Gutekunst clearly prioritizes a pass rush, it's not really a surprise that we took this guy. This will be PSmith's last year in Green Bay, I'd bet. We'll trade him, and probably get something for him too if he has a good season.

You know....as the selection of LVN sinks in a little more after a nights sleep I easily see him within a couple years of being that 8 to 11 sack season guy. Never going to be a top sack guy but a guy with steady production. If he can become very good at stopping the run, and holding the edge, combined with staying healthy and on the field this was a very solid pick. If the Packers pick-up Rashan's contract the Packers should be very well set at the starters at Edge (not back-ups) for the next 4-5 years.

I had hopes of the Packers drafting Mazi Smith on the DL in round 2, but he went much higher than I anticipated. With the TE, WR, & Safety needs remaining I'm thinking a top NT might not be in the cards this year, as the first DL pick may take place in round 4 - 5. We shall see but I sure hope Johnathan Ford had an incredible jump this offseason.

I don’t get this “he wasn’t even a starter” concern. It’s been addressed ad nauseum. It’s just something for people to glom onto in the talking head driven sports “news” that doesn’t have near the significance that the amount of attention it gets would indicate. Like not drafting WR in the first round.

Clay Mathews was not a starter in college.

I'll admit Van Ness caught me somewhat by surprise. I was not surprised by the selection of an Edge in round 1. I was only surprised that Van Ness was the selection. Not because he isn't a good player but because I felt he was rated a little lower than #13. I am still shocked the Packers did not take Broderick Jones.

Second round going to be interesting! Do they stay put or do they move up in round 2? I'm guessing they select a TE in round 2 but the problem is I see a run at the TE position. The other 2nd round pick likely between a DL, and a WR. Who will still be available at #42 & #45?

Tucker, Washington, Musgrave, Mims, Tillman, AT Perry, Rice?, Mingo Don't see how they get out of round 2 without one WR.

Musgrave who some do not like has that combo thing going like Kincaid in that he can play WR or TE. Might he be a strong consideration by Gute?

Musgrave is a nice idea, but a big health question. Who knows what the Doctors think? He’s a big slot, not a TE though, like Kincaid. Ignore the label.

The AFC drafts rockets. We draft bulldozers. Yea, bulldozers are big and strong, but don't go very far or fast. This is a passing game, edgers who can't get to the QB within a few seconds do nothing to stop the rocket passing game. We don't know if Love is a rocket passer, but the prime WRs go to Chargers, Seahawks, Ravens, Bills (Kincaid), Vikings. Those are some players Love needs around him, but Guterworst can't bring himself to picking a receiver in the 1st round.

11”.

Duane Brugler on Van Ness:

“Overall, Van Ness needs coached up with his pass-rush construction and overall pacing, but he is an ascending player and competes like a grizzly bear with his fierce power and explosive twitch. He has the upside of an impactful starter with inside/outside versatility, regardless of scheme.”

Pretty much says it all. Good.

He ran a 4.58 at 272 pounds lol. Thats faster than Will Anderson, Myles Garrett, TJ Watt, just to name a few. And Van Ness will likely get put on the same dieting plan Gary is on (he has lost about 20 pounds since being drafted) which will lead to even more explosion just like it did for Gary. This kid's gonna be a freakshow.

Agree... and, getting to the QB is a team effort. Some people create chaos or draw attention that allow others to get to the QB quickly. LVN is going to be able to be used in both ways, which is why GB loved him. Flexibility on the front 7 creates greater uncertainty for the QB.

Wasn't all that long ago that a fast Clay Matthews was washed out of every play because he just tried to run past the tackles and every team saw it coming every play.

I wonder when they will go QB?

Remember when Favre was traded, they went to the well and drafted 2 QBs, Brome and Flynn.

I will not be surprised if they go QB in the second and TE or WR. Then probably TE or WR in the 3rd.

Well Brohm was supposed to be a top 5 pick if he had come out after his junior year but he stayed in school and had a bad year. Ted probly thought he was getting a steal at that pick. If Levis keeps falling, it could be deja vu. I hope not, but i guess its possible.

15 to 12! thx for sharing this. Hard to fathom as differing teams usage and Michigan didn't really seem to use Gary properly, thus his D1 stats weren't top notch. I sure hope GB uses VN quicker and gets him going early as it appears he's an agressive type and better yet a tough well coached Hawkeye!!! Hah, as they say, you can't coach size nor speed! Love the pick once Skronski was gone.

And Gary has since slimmed down nearly 20 pounds from the weight he was drafted at which has made him a lot more explosive. I expect Van Ness will be put on the same dieting plan. Get him down to around 255-260 and he will be missile coming off the line.

weight isnt everything in missile making.

The player must have the quick twitch muscles to take advantage of the lesser weight.

It remains to be seen where LVN ends up, losing some weight and becoming a missile, or gaining some weight and becoming Dean Lowrey...

Which he has. You dont run a 4.58 at 272 pounds without some serious twitch. Takes a lot of torque to accelerate that much weight that fast. Losing some weight for him would be like ripping the bed off a powerstroke diesel. There will be a difference.

The pick itself will be a wait and see proposition. The issue I have is not maximizing the value of your pick. I have a hard time believing that the same deal that Pitt. made with NE was not there to be made by GB. Maybe a missed opportunity to get the same player while adding additional draft assets.

Tonight 15 of 31 first round picks - about half - were offensive players, including 2 running backs, 4 wide receivers and 1 tight end and 3 quarterbacks and 5 offensive tackles,.

Our last 11 drafts below + first pick this year in Lukas Van Less, Edge Rusher.

Other than Jordan Love, the first pick in each of the 12 drafts was defense.

Despite this emphasis on defense, over the last 15 years, the Packers have had top 10 defenses only 3 times.

Of the 101 players drafted by the Packers over these 11 years, just 3 of the choices made 1st team all pro and all were offensive players - 2nd round 2014 draft choice Davante Adams in 2020 and 2021 and 4th round 2013 draft choice in 2018 and 2020 and 5th round 2014 draft choice Corey Linsley in 2020

As usual, I don't get your point, if you have one.

The Packers draft defensive players in the first round? Yes.

Now, if the point you're attempting to make is that this has hurt the offense, that's going to be a fumble, because since 2011, we've finished in the Top Ten scoring 6 times, we finished first twice, and we were in the bottom half of the league in offense only once, and that's the year of the Gumchewer.

And if that's not your point, then I give up.

I have nothing against the player, what I am disappointed in is the continued pattern of taking defensive guys over the years with little to show in return. I don’t see much changing in this unit because mainly of poor coaching for many years. They should have focused on the offense, load up. An opportunity to get quality at either WR or TE, and they draft defense. Not feeling this gentleman

There wasn’t an offensive skill player I would have taken at 13. We could have traded back. Had we, we could have. Ultimately, that was my hope, but if there’s a player a GM feels is value at 13, he has to take him. Now we start seeing if that assessment was correct.

Lukas Van Ness -
40 TIME: 4.58 SECONDS (96%*)
AGE: 21.9 DOB: 07/06/2001
Iowa

NFL Draft Buzz strengths and weaknesses are below.

NFL.com had him as the 27th ranked player, others:

ESPN 11
CBS 16
PFF 14
DN 31
SN 23
ALET 10

His average ranking was 22.3.

NFL Draft Buzz

SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS

Very athletic player who is nicknamed “Hercules” by teammates. Looks like he was carved out of stone standing 6-5 and weighing in at 275lbs

He’s flexible enough to bend the edge, and he’s at his best when Van Ness can use his quickness and change-of-direction abilities to counter back inside.

Plays with leverage at the point of attack whether inside or outside. Keeps eyes in the backfield when inside; moves linemen to either side with strong hands.

High level of functional strength and an elite ability to convert speed to power
His spin move is already NFL-caliber, and he displays a very good motor

Gets very good leverage and has exceptional lower leg strength

He’s very instinctive when it comes to countering and solid with overall hand usage

Has very powerful hands - gets under blocker's pads and easily drives them backward

As a pass rusher, he shows quickness off the line and has the fluid athleticism and flexibility to bend the edge.
Combines excellent power with initial quickness, but one of his best attributes are his violent hands, which he uses with impressive precision

Long arms with an elite tackle radius along with an always-on motor

SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES

Plays too tall, and doesn't have the elite speed to easily beat top-level tackles on the edge

Doesn't anchor consistently and can not be knocked of balance

He’s susceptible to cut blocks, a tactic that was used on him often

Has limited experience - has played just two years of college football
Struggles recognizing blocking schemes

Has been able to dominate a college with power - this won't be possible at the next level where he'll need a greater set of rushing tools

Van Ness doesn’t show much in the way of dynamic change-of-direction ability on counter moves, and also has a limited repertoire of pass-rushing moves

SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY

Lukas Van Ness is a good pro prospect, with ideal size and elite power for the position. In his final year at Iowa, he played at an elite level as he logged 9 sacks and huge 31 total hurries on the edge. He however is a little raw and while having outstanding power is inexperienced and only has a limited array of pass-rushing moves and so may struggle to adapt to the pro game.

Van Ness may be over-drafted due to his power and production, although currently, we regard him as a day-two selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

You don’t need to do your own math to determine the average of where people selected him to be drafted. Just go to NFL Mock Draft Database and they show you a consensus of the average of around 30 scouting services. On that one they show Van Ness at 15.

I predicted Edge Myles Murphy, but said (in another thread) that the Packers may well prefer Van Ness.

Both WERE on the board when pick 13 rolled around, but I was not that surprised the Packers liked Van Ness ...............they do like guys with lots of upside.

I think Myles is the more refined guy now - but Van Ness might have more upside. I'd still go Myles Murphy over Van Ness (he had a higher RAS score than Van Ness and a bigger repertoire of moves), but I'm happy the Packers took an edge guy in round one - top end edge guys are always in high demand and Gary (when fit) and Van Ness are a duo to excite as pass rushers.

I do prefer power guys over speed guys at Edge (a Van Ness or Murphy, over a Nolan Smith for example) ........and as Mark Oldacres says, Van Ness does have good wheels, even if speeding round the edge isn't the biggest part of his game at this time.

Played more snaps than most of the front 7 at Iowa last year, the narrative that he wasn't a starter is just silly. Dude played a lot - go watch his tape against the top OL taken in the first round last year, blew them up. Put skoronski on his ass, pushed paris johnson jr off him like it was nothing.

Who starts is irrelevant. How many snaps does a player get and who is playing during the crucial parts of the game is more important.

I'm old enough to remember Aaron Kampman.
I'm old enough to remember Ezra Johnson.
I like Van Ness.

But Jaxon S-N was rated higher on my board & almost everyone else's board, a clearly BPA scenario AND the Packers need help at WR more than edge/DL.

Why do we always go defense with our premium picks?
Savage was benched. Erik Stokes was benched. Kevin King cost us the Super Bowl. Damarious Randall sucked. Haha Clinton-Dix sucked.

We had a chance at a great WR who out produced 2 NFL 1st round studs while together at Ohio State.
