Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - 2019 Game 15, Packers - Vikings

The weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

NFC NORTH CHAMPIONS!!! - So much for the preseason predictions of impending doom for the Packers and of a new order in the North. Order has been restored - Packers at the top.

Jimmy Graham - I can accept the fact he's not the same guy physically anymore - nothing can be done about that. But for a 10-year veteran of the NFL to not know to switch the ball to his outside hand when approaching the sideline in just incredulous. It likely cost the Packers four points as they had to waste a timeout, which means when Jamal Williams was tackled in-bounds on the next play (screen pass), instead of being able to stop the clock, they lost 15 seconds getting everyone lined up to running the next play. Instead of 1st and goal with seven seconds left, they would have had 22 seconds left. Plenty of time for another try or two to score a touchdown.

End of the half - Continuing my thoughts from the Graham paragraph, yes, the clock management at the very end was bad, but things would not have gotten so frantic if they had two timeouts there instead of one. Thanks Jimmy.

Referees - It's pretty hard to believe, but in this year of 2019 in the NFL, this crew did a fantastic job. They let the game of football be played, only calling the obvious infractions. There was a total of five penalties the entire game. Crew chief was Bill Vinovich. Kudos to him and his crew.

Seahawks - So we're forced to root for Seattle this weekend and how's this for a development - can Marshawn Lynch ride in on his white horse and deliver a beast mode performance to help out the Packers?

Offense - For me, this was the best offensive game plan LaFleur put together all year. Run the ball and don't abandon it when down, use play action a lot, take your deep shots on first or second downs, move the chains on third downs.

Blow out - If not for their own mistakes, the Packers would have totally destroyed this "vaunted" Viking defense in their home stadium. Think about that.

Rashan Gary -  While I would need to "look at the tape," my impression was that when he was in, he did a good job staying in his pass rush lane and not giving Cousins an easy way out to his side. That and the fine interior pressure from Clark & Co, helped Z Smith have a mostly stationary target to go after. And please, let's stop obsessing about how many snaps Gary gets. This game was all about letting the big dogs work. Even Fackrell got 20 snaps fewer than he did last week, so it's all relative to the game plan.

Aaron Jones - What can you say? If you feed him, he will run. Kudos to LaFleur for sticking with the run game when things were not going their way early. I think he's learned his lesson from mistakes made in some previous games.

TE - Let's face it, from a pass-catching standpoint, this position is giving us no gas, just a stinky, smelly gas/oil mix spilling out of the old jalopy in our driveway. On the other side of the ball, the Packers finally did a good job defending an opposition TE, holding Rudolph to 2 catches and a total of 7 yards. While I've always thought Rudolph was a bit overrated, that's still a very nice job.

Defense - The "We have a defense" version of the Packers' defense returned for game 15 after a long hiatus. Just in time for a run through the playoffs?

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

The defensive front won this game, Z Smith and Kenny Clark were dominant. The plan for the Vikings was sending doubles at Clark, then Smith starting beating both tackles like a drum.

Agree on Graham, inexcusable veteran mistake, they must believe Sternberger is not ready as he was a healthy scratch, I expect him to be involved against the Lions. The Jimmy Graham experiment is over in Green Bay, Lewis has been out snapping him on first down especially.

Rashan Gary showed disruption when out there he looked good, couple nice bull rushes. He should play quite a bit against Det to spell Z Smith.

Would like to see Jones rest a bit next game as I think it will be in hand in the 2nd half. Get Ervin and Dexter Williams some opportunities.

I would like to see Sternberger, Gary, Keke, Williams and Tim Boyle get some opportunities against a bad Stafford-less Lions team missing a lot of pieces.

A question for anyone,
Is Preston disappearing? He doesn’t seem to be getting the pressures he had earlier in the season.
Just my personal observation: the term “kudos” is WAY overused on this sight. Especially if you add in the number of times it’s used on Pack A Day.
How long will it take Raven Greene to get into football shape? Is it possible that he would be able to help the Pack this season?
Hope you all have a blessed Christmas as you celebrate the Lord’s birth.

He is simply not as dominant as Z Smith, he also drops into coverage more and sets the edge against the run more as he is pretty good at it. He had a few pressures against Minn just no sacks. Playing well, but Z smith and Clark are taking over games.

I agree but also note that Preston Smith was on pace to drop back into coverage 147 times this season. Preston Smith averaged dropping back 56 times per season with Washington and his previous high was in 2017 when he dropped into coverage 72 times.

Preston rushed the passer on 53% of all snaps with Washington (2016 to 2018, inclusive). In GB he is at 45%. His pressure rate is at a career-high in 2019. Preston is playing very well.

Preston Smith is just a different kind of player and he gets used differently. After all the years of complaints of square pegs and round holes we should appreciate Pettine's recognition of this.

Even though they had many turnovers, the game never seemed lost, because the Defense kept getting the ball back. I had a feeling this season was going to be different when Preston Smith was signed and the first thing he did was drive non- stop back to his mother's house to tell her she wouldn't have to work anymore. That's the kind of charter you can build a team with that is greater than the sum of all the parts.

Except for the turnovers, I thought the offense did well all game. I am glad that Lazard is being trusted. He did a great job.

And the defense appears it is peaking. The dline is playing well.

This was a great win. The offense is close to clicking. Things are going well for the team right now. Go PACK!

See I was thinking a lot like you. Yes they turned the ball over but if teams are counting on the Packers to turn it over 99 games out of 100 they'll still be waiting by games end. The offense MOVED the ball pretty much most of the game.

MLF STUCK with the run and more importantly stuck with Aaron Jones. Under McCarthy his normal response to a fumble was to pull the player or really limit his snaps the rest of that game, MLF didn't do that.

IF they play exactly like that and Rodgers can clean it up just a little (and we know he will) then this team will be tough to deal with.

Many of the turnovers we had were due to the vikings punching the ball out of our player's hands, every chance they got. Even when our player was down on the turf, the vikings would punch at the ball. We should have seen a solution come from the coaches for this, before the game, as this is the vikings' MO for tackling. Glad it worked out for us with a victory.

Fundamentals displayed by both teams. Vikings defensive technique in tackling is recommended. PAcker ball security with five points a bit sloppy to say the least on a couple of plays. Graham's technique, totally unsound. You learn to carry the ball to the outside boundary in 7th grade football.

I also have to go back and "watch the tape" but I think Stefanski was playing 2 TE's and using them to block on most 1/2nd downs. Yeahhh, that didn't work too well, did it?

Jimmy Graham is bad at football. I hated the signing when it was made and I hate it even more now. Cut the bum the day after the season, Gute.

Thielen was clearly not himself, but the secondary (including Kevin King) played really well against a good offense.

Our front 7 has gotten much better against the run and that pass rush is sick.

If ARod can get back to his pre-collarbone 2017 form, this team is very dangerous in January. If not, and they play as clean as possible everywhere else, they're still dangerous, but the margin for error is much smaller.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Watching the game I noticed Rashan Gary had several pressures and came very close to sacking Cousins twice. One of those times Z beat him to the sack. Gary actually looked pretty good out there like he's staring to pick it up.

I agree. Just watched the all22 and he blew up the Tackle 3 times and a double team once with bull rushes. He seems to lack a few moves as a pass rusher but playing with the Smiths he is sure to learn. His future and our pass rush is bright.

I've seen a number of coaches comment that it takes a couple of years for a college down lineman to convert to a pro level OLB - just a significant change in techniques and responsibilities. Gary seems to be on a good learning curve and is definitely starting to get it. Good news for the Packers!

The thing is the Packers FINALLY have a position coach at OLB for the first time since Kevin Greene, hell Smith might be a better coach even. Gary has been showing up more and more each game. I think he actually does have a chance to be really good.

Considering “Gary” was the 12th player chosen he should have been a starter from day one. I felt he could be a good player but the 12th position demands you get an impact player now.

Good article Al, you pretty much nailed it.
I have not figured out this year why Graham has been on the field as much as he has. Lewis has been far more 'clutch' when he's targeted which IMO has not been often enough. We need the young guys to step up, and hopefully we'll see them in Detroit, Lewis has made it clear he's nearing retirement and Graham SHOULD be gone.
On the Seahawks, as a Packer fan living in 49er territory, and their record, I have the unfortunate problem of rooting for the Seahawks twice this season, things were easier when the 9ers were cellar dwellers.
I said on Monday that I thought this might have been MLF's best game as a play caller, and I still think so. Now we'll see how things play out as the competition gets tougher. Can he adjust?
It was really great to see Rashan Gary finally have some productive snaps, hopefully a sign of things to come.
Aaron Jones, what needs to be said, keep feeding this monster.
As for the defense, I like what we saw Monday night but I'll feel better when Jaire Alexander comes out of his sophomore slump and we can play the same type of game against a top tier running back, until then????? I haven't seen a "Charles Woodson type Take Away" interception in a long, long time.
If the defense can keep it up, and if the offense and Rodgers can get it clicking, this could be a dangerous team in the play-offs, but we need all the pieces.

Yeah, I agree.
After a good rookie season I'm hoping it's just a sophomore slump.
If not, he'll join a growing list of high-round DBs that didn't cut it in GB.
With that said, I'm not giving up on him like TT did with Hayward, but he needs to step it up and play like we think he can.
Bring back Woodson as a DB coach, watcha' think?

Edit: Maybe Gute and MLF can talk to 'Wood' and/or Al Harris when they're inducted into the Packers' HOF this summer. Big smile!

Hayward was injured for most of his time in Green Bay. He was great when on the field. King was likely in the same jeopardy of getting cut in the same fashion. I can’t fault the management for Hayward’s dismissal.
That said, they fucked up big time with Micah Hyde. He’s a safety! That square peg round hole shit just doesn’t seem to have a high percentage of return.

CB’s are taught to read the receivers eyes and hands when in trail technique to make a play on the ball, not peek in the backfield looking back for the ball. That would be a”bad habit”. It’s sometimes possible for corners to track the ball in coverage but rarely when playing trail. FYI. Merry Christmas to all! JA is a very talented CB who is playing very well. He shut Diggs down all night except for that one perfect ball by Cousins. Diggs has nice “late hands” so there really wasn’t much JA could do about that play IMO.

You don't really believe that do you? Sure - MLF was telling AR to hold the ball and look for the long shot rather than throwing it in 2.0 seconds!? (someone posted that early for his avg hold time in 2nd half).

If AR made those long throws, I'd be thrilled. But I'm a realist. He just isn't hitting them like he used to. But he is still good and should be smart enough to play smart.

The defense is doing what they have too. Expect The Unexpected! They now must protect against getting Sloppy, and over confident. Better QBs, a wait them. Working hard always pays dividends. This offense still is growing. The OL is the key to any victory. Give Rodgers time, and he'll find anyone. But how I wish he'd get to the OL quicker. Special players all have ups and Downs. ( They Get hot and cold.) While it's easy to remind someone what they should have done. It's still what they can do. Getting down on anyone will have a negative effect on everyone. Keep the ride going.

Merry Christmas Al and everyone. "order has been restored", love it! After rewatching the game, AR and the Packers ran the offense to perfection in the second half, mixing timley 3rd down conversions and runs. The won the TOP battle nearly by 2/3 rds. They pushed the vaunted queeny D around and imposed their will on them sticking the dagger in with the Jones 56 yard td run. Say what you want about prime time, AR and the Pack is 6-0 in their last 6 MNF games. Expect a lot of prime time next year too after what looks to be a 13 and 3 season. Let that sink in 13-3, who'd a thunk, and a chance to be the #1 seed. GOPACKGO....GOPACKGO....GOPACKGO!!!!!

A total douche move by a coach I've respected. While I loathe the Vikings franchise and their fair weather fans, it's hasn't been as easy for me to hate this group of players as it has in the past. With the exception of Anthony Barr, of course. There's no John Randle, Randy Moss, Fred Smoot, Fran Tarkenton, Paul Krause, Daunte Culpepper or Bud Effing Grant aka Bad Grunt to spark my rage (this list could continue).

The Packers have always had trouble with the Vikings, even during the Lombardi era, and back in the day the Minneapolis Star Tribune had a columnist named Don Reilly who used to grind our faces in it week in, week out. This went on for years as thankfully we watched those powerful Vikings teams ultimately fail.

I hate the Minnesota Vikings, their slimy owner, their fair weather fanbase, and now their no-class head coach. I've heard they had video of Barr's hit on Aaron playing on the scoreboard before the game. Were any of you there to witness that? If that's true, what a soulless morally bankrupt entity! Would some drunken tool at Lambeau jeer an injured Viking on his way off the field? Undoubtedly. Would the Packers replay the hit that caused the injury? Absolutely not!

On that note and in the spirit of the holidays, Merry Christmas, Go Pack, and Eff the Minnesota Vikings.

Not surprised at all. Vikings pretty much went all in this year. Even with the cap increase they were in a hard way coming next season. Win now cause there's no tomorrow for this team. Unlike the Packers who can get most of their core back, the numbers no not favor the Vikings in that respect. Giving the way the Vikings owner operates, Zimmer knows he a ' dead coach walking' and acted that way...

MLF has accomplished that in his very first year, congrats MFL for your first goal and for being a class act. I think the offensive line isn't getting the credit they definitely deserve. They pass blocked great. Did u hear Danielle Hunters name called? Only once & that was a roll out.
Did u hear Everson Griffin name? Nope.

Aside from one total screw up by Linsley, Rodgers had a clean pocket.
On that note, Rodgers was protected so well that we should have put up 40 in that dome.
And I'm tired of the "he had no weapons" comment.

Andy Herman & I tweeted some images of Kumerow WIDE OPEN deep 3 times where Rodgers never looked at him. Kumerow could have had an easy 150 yard game & then the "pundits" might say "maybe there's a new weapon"..... like when Jordy blossomed & Thielen blossomed. It takes the pass coming your way to blossom.

Speaking for myself it's good to know that we don't need to put up 40 points per game any longer now that we actually can play defense. Winning 23-10 or 43-10 still counts as one win, unless of course you need Aaron Rodgers and the offense to put up more points for your Fantasy Football league which would be the only reason to complain about Rodgers not looking at Kumerow. Of course if the passes went incomplete to Kumerow there would be complaints about Rodgers not throwing to the open guy underneath. For some Aaron Rodgers can't win even when he is winning and the team is 12-3. Always easy to criticize when you're not in the battle. Thanks, Since '61

Good points Ai , I taped the game and watched Gary on his early snaps he seemed to play a full series while Z Smith was on the sideline, there is a play where he bursts into the backfield but cousins hands off and Gary then runs the play down from behind, pretty fast for a big guy, I think he gets more snaps also against the Lions, Merry Christmas all!

IF this defense plays it's remaining games from the 2019/20 season the way they did week 16 against the Vikings, this Packers team suddenly looks MUCH MORE capable of beating anybody at any time.

Drew Brees for example doesn't play as well outdoors and that's in October and November. The Packers getting AT LEAST the #2 seed would most likely mean the Saints at home in the Divisional round. That doesn't seem so bad in January at Lambeau. I'd also wonder about that right thumb he had surgery on earlier this season in January. Could be interesting.

Merry Christmas to all Viqueen trolls who enter this site. Come on over to the Green and Gold side. See what it feels like to close out a Super Bowl and win an NFL Championship.

Those purple peckers have never known, and will never know, what it feels like to win a title. Sucks to be them.

I smile when I think that the Packers spoiled Christmas a little bit for Mike Florio and his fellow Vikings trolls.

I don't want any stinking, fair weather purple fans coming over to root for us. They can all stay in Minnesota and writhe in their misery.

I sigh every time I see the packers go Jimmy Graham's direction. On the bright side, we only have to watch him play 4 more games for the packers. Hopefully, he doesn't blow a game for them. I would just prefer them to go with Lewis and the young guys.

In retrospect, I would have preferred to have Randall Cobb in the lineup on Sunday's rather than Jimmy Graham.

To say I am pleasantly surprised at how well our team has done would be like saying Hank Aaron was a good hitter or Brett Favre was a decent quarterback. The performance of the Packers made my easy chair football season a complete success?

Absolutely Ferrari-Driver, Cobb over Graham is a no brainer. If Cobb didn't have so many injuries the last couple years here, I think he would be going to the playoffs with us, instead of hoping that the Jerry Jones Cowgirls Circus can somehow stumble into them. I think that was a tough loss for Rodgers to miss his confidence and sure hands. Cobb today looks like a speed demon compared to Graham. I always liked Graham as a player, but he should have retired BEFORE the Packers made the mistake of signing him. Money out the window there !!

Cut him some slack - his team just got toasted.

Better than the old Harbaugh / jim schwartz scowls.

don't blame him for not being into it....

I've always felt that you show class and respect to someone that just took you to the wood shed for a royal ass kicking !! Yeah, he doesn't have to be INTO IT, but give credit where credit is due and stop being a dickhead all the time. MLF just equaled in 1 year what Zimmers done in how many ? How bout acting like a MAN ??
