Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Dubose not Dubious
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

Dubose - If he continues what he's done in camp and the first preseason game, Grant Dubose, an afterthought in many peoples' minds (like me). could not just make the roster, but also leapfrog Bo Melton as WR5 on this team. And I say that as a leader of the Bo Melton Fan Club. Jordan Love said Dubose has been making plays every day in practice, and that carried over to the Browns game, where he caught five passes, three of then resulting in first downs on third or fourth down. Love also praised his blocking downfield, and we know how much LaFleur values that. He loves it so much, on Saturday he showed the entire team clips of DuBose blocking in the game. Bo better start hanging on to the football.
LVN - Lukas Van Ness looks like he may be developing faster overall than Rashan Gary did, however, he still doesn't have a pass move beyond "run through the guy."
Wyatt - De'vonte Wyatt came to the NFL with the reputation of being a disruptor at the line of scrimmage. We've seen some glimpses of it - you're about to see much more. Wyatt got his first reps with the "1s" this week in practice, taking TJ Slaton's spot. Given the freedom to just get into the backfield and create havoc however he can, he did just that against the Browns. Here's the evidence courtesy of Ben Fennel:
I don't even mind (at this point/stage) if Devonte Wyatt is just a one-dimensional player... But in 2024 and in Hafleys scheme - his #1 job is get off the ball & get up field. Disrupt, disrupt, disrupt.
It may come with some gap lapses and/or taking himself out of play upfield pic.twitter.com/VuG64sAJVl
— Ben Fennell (@BenFennell_NFL) August 11, 2024
Pratt - Many are saying it this week (I was onboard about a week ago), Michael Pratt is just a better quarterback than Sean Clifford. Clifford is more of an intangibles/effort guy, but Pratt is just a better passer. I was pretty disappointed the Packers kind of shut him down on the last possession of the Browns game, choosing to have him keep handing the ball off and running out the clock. It's a preseason game! The Browns aren't going to get mad if you try to score another touchdown. I would have liked to seen Pratt given the opportunity to run the four minute offense. Oh well.
Rhyan - I think LaFleur let something slip in his presser. When asked to evaluate Sean Rhyan, there was the usual banter about good things shown and areas to improve blah, blah, blah..." But then LaFleur said, "One of the biggest things is that he has to make sure he's in charge of is the conditioning component and making sure he stays ahead of that. Because when he is fresh, I think he can be pretty good." Seems like LaFleur just revealed why Sean Rhyan isn't the starting right guard by now.
Getting your kicks - I have been decidedly pro-Anders Carlson in this kicker battle. My concern has been whether Greg Joseph could be successful at Lambeau Field in the winter when he was nothing more than average while kicking in a dome with the Vikings. I still have that concern, but now I'm just as concerned about Carlson's seeming attraction to the goal posts. Carlson has missed too many and even most of his easy made field goals and extra points are just sliding past one of the posts, while Joseph's kick are usually right down the middle. SO which is the lesser of two evils? I can't decide. The only thing I can be sure of is that I'm worried about the Packers kicking game. If the Packers are serious about making a run at a Super Bowl appearance, they're going to need better than what they currently have in the place-kicking department.
We've heard this before - Mike Pettine said it. Joe Barry said it. Jeff Hafley has said it. "We're going to fly to the ball." It would always start out that way in preseason and maybe carry over into the first regular season game or two, but then it would fade like the colors on that old concert t-shirt you wore and washed a hundred times. Sure enough, you saw it Saturday in the game against the Browns - players pursuing from all over the field. LaFleur talked about it in his presser. SO do I believe it? Will it really be different this time? Shouldn't I be singing. "We won't get fooled again?" And yet, this sucker believes the third time will be the charm. This time around, the defense has been filled out with fast and aggressive players. The personnel is finally there to make the dream a reality. I'm currently choosing to live in that dream. Don't wake me up.

I'm in the same place as Al when it comes to Carlson or Joseph. Carlson's kicks ALWAYS seem to flirt with either goalpost and have since last season. Very few kicks go right down the middle. Personally I think it should be between Joseph and maybe someone else who's not on the roster yet.
I don't have any faith in Carlson what so ever. If you really want to hang onto him release him and claim him once he clears waivers. Can anyone really see a team claiming him? I don't.
"LVN - Lukas Van Ness looks like he may be developing faster overall than Rashan Gary did, however, he still doesn't have a pass move beyond "run through the guy."
I think he'll be better than Gary, probably by next season for sure...Just my opinion. I like LVN a lot and he makes plays in the backfield. I think the Hafley bring the 4-3 defense to GB is the absolute best thing that could have happened to this Packers defense.

They will regret going with Joseph if that’s what they end up doing. I trust him even less, no matter what he is doing in camp. Carlson is still developing and could get better. Maybe he won’t, but this team and fan base had a lot of patience with Mason Crosby when he hit some very rough stretches — and he never had the really big leg he was advertised as having. Crosby didn’t make 'em all, especially early in his career. They could afford the same patience with Carlson.
And one more thing: get a decent long snapper for once! Orzech is not going to cut it.

This from Acme Packing Company...
Today was not a strong showing for the kickers. Yesterday was Alex Hale’s shot at kicking, so Wednesday went to the veterans. Before the two-minute period, Greg Joseph went three of six on kicks in designated kicking periods while Anders Carlson was four of six on the day, per Herman. Joseph ended up missing a two-minute period fire drill kick, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, which brought his total to three of seven on the day.
Joseph is now 50 of 61 in training camp (82 percent). Carlson’s total is 48 of 60 (80 percent), and Hale comes in at 10 of 15 (67 percent). Wednesday was easily the worst the veteran kickers have looked all summer.
Hmmmm...I think it's time for an entirely NEW leg in camp... And soon!
They BOTH suck!

The gap has narrowed. Joseph down to making 82% or 83% and Carlson is around 81%. That's Joseph's career percentage and Carlson is about where he was during the 2023 season. IDK.

Weird fact: The wild thing is the Packers traded JJ Jansen to the Carolina Panthers in April 2009 and he's been Carolina's long snapper to this day. Prior to that, in 2007, the Packers waived Clark Harris and he was the Bengals' long snapper from 2009-2022. In 2016, the Packers waived Rick Lovato, and he's been the Eagles' long snapper since late 2016. In 2018, the Packers did not re-sign Taybor Pepper, and he's been an NFL long snapper elsewhere from 2019-present. They also released Zach Triner in 2018, and he's been the Buccaneers' long snapper since 2019.
The Packers have had a lot of NFL-caliber long snappers but haven't kept them. Two have won Super Bowl rings elsewhere.

I am going to play Packers GM for the QB and kicker situation. This is not what I think they should do this is what I believe they will do and a re thinking.
They want to give Clifford every opportunity to become the number 2 QB. Even if that means they will not show what they have in Pratt. They will keep Love and Clifford on the 53 unless Clifford just drops the ball. They will waive Pratt and pick him up after he passes through the waiver and put him on the PS. Yes I believe he will pass through waivers because most teams do not want to pick up a new QB after training camp unless they just cannot pass him up.
I am not sure what they will do with the kicker. Gute wants to keep Carlson and pick up Joseph or another kicker for the PS. So I believe we are stuck with Carlson and we will get Joseph on the PS as no other team will want him. I hope they get a kicker off of the waiver but I am sure whoever they get will not be much of an improvement.
My gut tells me Pratt will be a better QB than Clifford in time. I also am not sure if he is ready to take over if Love gets hurt. I would roll the dice and at the end of preseason keep Pratt and try to bring back Clifford.
As for kicker I would drop the third kicker they have, forgot his name and to lazy to look it up. I would go with Joseph as he is more dependable. With the new kicking rules I would be negotiating with Crosby and I would sign him if we could get him at a reasonable price. Crosby's leg was not strong enough to get it to get touchbacks but you need an accurate kicker now with the new kickoff rules.
As for defense they messed up not hiring Vrabel. He would have been a great DC for the Packers.

I wondered why Ryan was not more competitive for the starting RG position. Third year player and third round pick should have been the favored candidate, even over a first round rookie. He sounds a bit like the kid from Eastern Michigan (Lang) who took a few years to grow up and become a starter. Hopefully he eventually does grow up.

In addition to whatever conditioning issues Rhyan may be having, he's also got the added bugaboo of not being the most sound pass protector at this point in his career.. and that's a big problem in Green Bay.

August 14, 2024 at 07:02 am
I was also disappointed that they shut down Pratt and the offense at the end of the preseason game. But Pratt played more in yesterday's practice, so we should see more of him in the next preseason game.
Good catch on that quote by LaFleur about Sean Rhyan. I hadn't heard that one. Yes, that does seem revealing. It's also a contrast to Jordan Morgan, who appears to be a tremendous athlete who keeps himself in good shape.
I was leaning toward Anders Carlson coming into camp, but now I'm thinking: What's wrong with Greg Joseph kicking it right down the middle almost every time? He looks like a very good kicker to me. If things continue as they are for the rest of the preseason, they should just keep Joseph and be done with it.

"What's wrong with Greg Joseph kicking it right down the middle almost every time?"
"According to an authority, humans can become addicted to worry and anxiety, and the brain can learn to crave the sensation. This can be a symptom of field goal & extra point anxiety disorder (FG&EPAD), a common anxiety disorder that can make anticipating each kick feel like a state of worry, fear, and dread"

Is there a pill for that or something?
My solution is still the best. Stop kicking the ball. Touchdowns are worth 6 points, add two with the conversion. Field goals are stupid.

A kindred spirit, amigo. I really think good offensive teams should go for 2 all the time. And a FG is worth 3, but a missed FG is essentially a turnover. Better to go for it on 4th and potentially get 8, unless 3 will win the game.

I like Dubose as well, but I also think it’s important to have some vertical threats. Right now that’s Watson, Reed, Melton, and…?
Now we can add “conditioning” to Rhyan’s to-do list, right after pass pro. But he offers more “slobber-knocking” than any other lineman, doesn’t he? Along with Monk? Or does that not matter in a zone blocking scheme?

Toure has long ball trackings skills and can outrun defenders, as he showed a lot of at NE. CBS sports projects him at 18 catches for less than 200 yards, which for him would be a big jump in stats. I don't know that they need another WR with tremendous speed.

I think MLF said it best. -
There is no #1 WR. Just the top 4.
Even if Dubose makes the club.
I don’t see him as a top 4 WR- Ever.
Word was they liked Jermaine Burton.
He would have been a better fit!
We just won’t get the most out of LVN or Wyatt
Being back-ups. Development for Who?
Play them or trade them.
QB #2.= It doesn’t matter.
You just paid Love 55 mil.
Sean Rhyan - Conditioning?
We’ve seen the athletic type fail.
I’ll still take mauler with speed.
If we grabbed King Sua-
They could have moved Tom.
Now they have to find a place for Morgan.
Just for kicks- have the kicker room with Love.
It worked for Rodgers and Crosby.
Fooled Again-I can believe it if a LB doesn’t cover a WR.

Should have picked this guy and should have drafted this other guy. There are 32 teams trying to get the best players for their team. I would say Gute has done a great job assembling one of the best teams in the league. Now it's up to the players to do it and coaches also. Most Packer fans cannot wait for week one and the season to begin.

Gute has done a good job assembling players.
But I wanted a team that turns into a dynasty.
Thats the difference in you and me.
You won't get that, if you keep the door revolving.
Gute has.
Regardless-
You will have an emotional team.
That turns "YOU" into a Yo - Yo.

Rhyan conditioning? Yeah, right?! The comment made from MLF dates back to last season. If Rhyan has a conditioning issue, would he have played the second most snaps on Saturday and showed no sign of slowing down. Rhyan is a solid 321. His legs are the size of tree trunks. You don’t get those by having conditioning issues. As for Morgan, he looks weak and soft. Not sure why some think he’s strong. He hurt his shoulder after a month of pushing against his own defense for a month? That’s a sign of just how he will fair during a full season. He won’t make it. He can’t handle it for a month and is already injured before pre season even starts speaks for itself.. it’s clear MLF doesn’t like Rhyan (for some reason) and will take every chance to suppress his accomplishments and highlight any weakness (whether true or not). Bad practice and obvious manipulation of facts by the #Packers and MLF. This was an issue last season. Who on the O-line is a mauler other than Rhyan?
Bitternotsour
August 14, 2024 at 02:22 pm
You could make that point without calling out Morgan, nonetheless, Rhyan appears beastlike to me.
Califan
August 14, 2024 at 11:08 pm
Ever since Morgan was picked, Rhyan has gotten bad press and has constantly been called out and questioned when Morgan has not played a snap. You can’t mention one without the other. #Packers needs to get Morgan on the field and put all of this to rest.

I was surprised that Pratt fell to the 7th Round, this past draft. After watching some tape and reading some content on him, I felt he could be, --heavy on the could be--, our next Brent Favor. Kind of a gunslinger, if you know what I mean. I think Clifford is headed to the PS, unless MLF keeps 3 QBs on the 53. I love LVN's speed and ability to get to the QB. I do not mind a "run through the guy" pass rusher, when he is on the field. Wyatt will be fine under Jeff Hafley. Turn the beast loose and opposing QBs won't know what to do with the ball, with our DL bearing down on them. If Sean Rhyan is having trouble with his conditioning, why are they playing him all over the OL? Can't they bench him and work to get him on a program to improve his stamina? Is he the second coming of Eddie Lacy, or something? Never met a buffet table he could not clear off? At least we got two solid years out of Lacy. I'd be happy to get one good year out of Rhyan, at this point. Let's go, Rhyan! It's time to show up!

In fairness, Rhyan did show up on Saturday. The wrinkle is that he did so particularly at C. Meanwhile, Monk, freed of being a C showed why we picked him.

As to defensive hustle, I think Reggie and LeRoy demanded it. Does GB have enough of those “attitude” guys now? I’d say Clark, Gary, Walker, and McKinney fit that mold, and I think Bullard, Wyatt, LVN, Cooper, Bullard, and Williams do as well. Some early season success on D would go a long way to cementing that approach too.

My two cents. First, LeFleur knows who signs his checks. Thus he favors Gutts higher picks with more play time thinking the later can be p squad.
Second, by now, time to get off the pot and pick a kcker. It aint that hard, Carlson hasnt improved.
I like de's who bull rush fine great. If the schem is everyone does it, any qb will pick you apart with donks over the middle all day long. Bull rush isnt a plan.
If Pratt is better passer why isnt he getting play time? See one above.
PS Vikes may need a good young QB, pratt could be the key for them. He aint clearing waivers folks

Dubose -
DuBose has really shined. He not only is looking to get a spot on the 53, he is looking to get playing time. We still have time but he really has really flashed. While I think Melton is the number 5 right now, there is definitely time for that to change.
LVN -
I can't wait to see LVN in this defense.
Wyatt -
Just like LVN, I can't wait to see Wyatt in this defense.
Pratt -
Pratt definitely has a better arm. Obviously Clifford is a lot farther ahead in knowing the offense. Right now I don't know who will be the number 2, but if Pratt isn't the number 2 I think he is on the 53.
Rhyan -
It makes sense now why he hasn't taken the next step. But I feel like Rhyan has performed well overall. I think he will be one of the main backup interior guys.
Getting your kicks -
Honestly. i'm more concerned with the long snapper. Most of the conversation has been about the 2 kickers. But none of it has been about the long snapping. Last year a lot of the kicks that Carlson missed were on attempts that the snap was terrible. Whoever wins the kicking battle, we need someone that is more consistent snapping the ball.
We've heard this before -
I feel the difference is the coach. I feel like Pettine and Barry could talk the talk, but when it came time to walk the walk, they weren't the guys. I feel like Hafley is. I just have that feeling that Hafley is the guy. But to go along with what Al said. the defense is filled with faster guys who can fly to the ball. We have 3 safety's that haven't played a snap in the NFL yet. (real games). And yet they might already be better then almost any safety we have had since Collins. We have a young group of ILB's that can absolutely fly. Also the defensive front isn't asked to take up blocks. they are asked to fly to the ball.
Bitternotsour
August 14, 2024 at 11:22 am
Pettine is a very aggressive hard-nosed coach. You may note that the season starts with aggression that is then dialed back. Those coordinators are doing the head coach's bidding. The fault lies with LeFleur. He weakens. He lacks the courage of his convictions.
This year remains to be seen. I hope Hafley stiffens MLF's spine, but history isn't a great indicator in that regard. MLF talks all gas, no brakes. In reality, he's pretty wobbly.
For the hundredth time though - if the defense remains top twelve in scoring, the onus is on the offense.

This is the time of year where I start to pick my favorites to make the 53. Should I pick opposite of my favorites because that's what the Packers always seem to do?
Are my instincts and evaluations so far off the mark? That may be true except I keep remembering the season that they started with Hansen and Newman as part of their best five starting in the first game.
splitpea1
August 14, 2024 at 11:20 am
I have no doubt whatsoever that Wyatt and the rest of the Packers' front can be excellent disruptors and carry it through four quarters if that's what they're coached to do. The nagging question, as always, is are they going to be disciplined and stout enough to hold up against the run for long stretches? So while I applaud the new defensive style (it's a long time coming!), I'll suspend judgment until they fill in the cracks with the run defense. So far so good against Cleveland, though, where they only allowed 2.7 yards per carry.
jannesbjornson

You don't draft One Picks to ride the pine. Wyatt can go inside/outside. His development was stymied by Barry ball. Van Ness has the burst. If the D-line coach cannot teach him the requisite kata to master the pass rush, call in Master Mark from the Shaolin Temple.

"I would have liked to seen Pratt given the opportunity to run the four minute offense."
I felt the same way. However, if you want to see teams play good aggressive football until the game ends, all they need is a simple change of rules. Bring total points into the equation as one of the tie breakers to be considered for playoffs when the wins/losses are identical.

All of the 'pundits' saying we should trade for a "true #1 WR" are ignoring the obvious trade possibility: Cowboys trade CeeDee Lamb to San Francisco for Brandon Aiyuk.
And yes, I am being facetious/sarcastic.
