Confessions of a Polluted Mindset: A Packers Brain Drain

Random thoughts swimming around in the Packers' section of my brain.

Mike McCarthy: At his Monday press conference, Coach McCarthy declared that the biggest thing to come out of the self-scout process was that the running game needs more attempts. 1. No Shit. 2. How many times have we heard this? I wish there was some press conference extraction tool that would go back and pull every instance of McCarthy saying he has to get the running game going.

Andy Herman: I personally can't wait for Andy's Friday film session where he will take a deep-dive on Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

Bye Week: Prior to last season, Mike McCarthy was 9-2 the week after a bye, with the only two losses coming to undefeated teams. Last year's Rodgers-less 30-17 loss to the Lions after their week 8 bye changed that narrative and also set the tone for the rest of the Packers' season. This week's game against the Rams will be a huge tone-setter for the 2018 Packers. It's time to find out if they are contenders or just pretenders.

Rams:  The Rams are going to score their points on the Packers' defense. The Packers are just going to need to score more. For me, the key to this game will be the Packers' offensive line, as the Rams lead the NFL in pressure percentage (they've gotten pressure on 36.9% of quarterback dropbacks.) Surprisingly, the Packers are sixth - bet you wouldn't have guessed that.

Odds: After three straight road games, the Rams return home this week and not many "experts" are giving the Packers much of a chance. The oddsmakers certainly agree, making the Rams 8.5 point favorites. Aaron Rodgers getting8.5 points? This has never happened before. I'm not much of a gambler, but this enticed me enough to make my first legal NFL bet in NJ. Likely just what the oddsmakers want. Sucker bet?

Defense: I'd love to be optimistic that with Jaire Alexander back and Bashaud Breeland now ready to play, the Packers will be in better shape in the secondary. But then I remember it's still Ha Ha and Brice behind them.

Non-Packers: Watching the Giants game Monday night, seeing Eli Apple with a weird grin after every bad play he made, it was obvious the guy just doesn't care. I give the Giants credit for getting him the hell out of there overnight.

Kind of how I feel sometimes:

Agree on the McCarthy “more attempts” lip service; and yet he’s ALSO lambasted for being “too conservative”. Can he do ANYTHING right??

What I would hope to see is for the Packers to have a balanced offensive gameplan. Not all of a sudden calling 40 rushes a game just because they're being criticized for running so few times, but a balanced mix of runs & passes along with a few surprise plays that will keep opposing defenses guessing.

What McCarthy & Rodgers have to learn is that you win games by scoring more points than the other team, not by getting more yards.

I just want to see a decent game 4 quarters....the come back games are great but I don’t want to see anymore 20-3 before the 2nd quarter, abandoned run game.... and the team has to pull a rabbit out of their ass to win.

Nope.

My favorite is if they win a game its because of Rodgers. When they lose its because of McCarthy.

Rodgers can do no wrong and McCarthy can do no right.

Rodgers has not been sharp. Plain and simple. He is as much at fault to why the offense has looked out of sync.

A lot goes into that. His knee injury, not playing half of last year, missing practice, no preseason. That all adds up to inconsistent performances.

Hopefully getting a week off, healing up and just getting a break to clear his mind he will come back as good as ever.

The funny thing is Rodgers at an 'average' level is still one of the top QB's in the league. He just hasn't been Rodgers great that we are accustomed to seeing. If he can get to that level, our offense will look much better.

I was disappointed that ARod sat out the first practice of the week. If he's going to play through these in-game issues, he's got to be on the field as much as possible. Period.

Yeah, I agree. I thought he would practice then he didn't.
IMO, he needs more reps in practice. He missed half of last year. He didn't have a preseason. Got hurt in week 1. and has barely practiced since.

Maybe the lack of practice time has hurt his timing with WR's. His brain isn't trusting his eyes.

In my estimation, it's not MM lip service that's the problem. I beieve he's calling quite a bit more run plays than we see being run.

His failure isn't saying something he doesn't intend to follow through with; his problem is he's given too much freedom to control the offense at the LOS to one of the most gifted and cerebral QB's in the league- who just so happens to want to do it all with his arm (Big surprise).

The real catch 22 for MM is that if he lays down the law and takes freedom to control the play call away from Rodgers, Rodgers will bitch, cry, and whine to the media, and the fan base will blast McCarthy because everyone is so sure he's an idiot who simply rides on Rodgers' jock.

I do not envy MM. Everyone likes to talk about him enjoying success because he's had back-to-back all-time great HOF QB's.. Nobody stops to consider he's also had to deal with two back-to-back all-time Diva Egos, too.

"Coach McCarthy declared that the biggest thing to come out of the self-scout process was that the running game needs more attempts."

Sorry coach but I no longer put much into most things that dribble out of your mouth. To me it's EXACTLY that...Dribble. I suppose it's from listening to the same ole, same ole, about doing this or that and then doing no such thing.

I'm also reasonably sure this is how the "More rushing attempts" will work out....

The Packers will defer to the 2nd half and kick-off to the Rams. The Rams will go 75 yards in about 7 plays with Gurley getting 40 yards because our OLB can't hold the edge. On 3rd down Cooks will be Brices responsibility but won't be within 15 yards of him on a TD pass in the end zone.

The Packers then start at the 12 yard line because a 55 yard return was called back for holding...Just like EVERY decent return this year so far. On 1st down Williams starts the game with a 1 yard run (who else would start right?) On 2nd down Rodgers throws a rainbow down the right sideline but overthrows his receiver by 15 yards. On 3rd down McCarthy calls for a pass to Cobb that travels 2 yards in the air and loses 3 yards...PUNT.

On the Rams next series just see example one...TD!! Rams 14 Packers 0 at the 7:30 mark of the 1st quarter. Down 14 Rodgers throws 52 times over the next 52:30 of the game. Aaron Jones gets 3 carries for 37 yards in the 1st half and 1 carry in the 2nd half for 8 yards finishing with 4 carries.

In the presser after the game Wilde asks McCarthy what happened to running the ball more and more specifically using MORE Aaron Jones. McCarthy's gives Wilde that how DARE you ask me that stare, tells Wilde he's a "Highly successful NFL HC" and says he won't answer questions about Jones.

On to New England where Mike SWEARS the Packers will run the ball more.

Mike McCarthy - I legitimately want to know, when he comes out and says they need more running attempts is that directed at him or Rodgers? I truly want to know how many run plays were called that were either checked out of or it was a part of the RPO and Rodgers threw it.
Is it McCarthy that is choosing not to run the ball more or is Rodgers choosing to not run the ball more?

Bye Week - It seems every year the team comes out of the bye and performs really well. Proven by the 9-2 record under McCarthy. What I'm more interested in, is seeing what changes they make. 2014 they came out of the bye week moving Mathews to ILB. Do they make a big move like that?
The one player I wonder about is Josh Jones. Do they get him involved more? Do they have him switch out with Brice? Do they get him in an ILB role?

Defense - Alexander I think provides the biggest boost to the defense. His energy and swagger seem to really make others play better around him. Even though he is a rookie he already is one of the top players on defense. I'm looking forward to seeing Alexander and King on the field together really for the first time this year.
Getting Breeland on the field will really help the defense also.

Rams/Odds - Lets just say, I'm feeling optimistic about this week.

That would be nice.

Will this be the week?
I honestly think they are close. They started out strong against the 49ers. Got into a lull and then came on strong late in the game. During that stretch in the middle the stopped running the ball.

The offense has the ability to put up points in a hurry, and has the ability to dominate. They just have been too inconsistent. And quite honestly that all is around Rodgers. He has missed open receivers (not thrown to them and throwing to them).

This week getting back his safety valve in Cobb should really help. Also Allison should help. The experienced gained by the rookies should help also.

I'm feeling optimistic about this game.

Thats basically what I want to know, but then also how much in a game the original play call gets changed.

I found it really interesting that on the final drive of the 49ers game, Rodgers came out and said Bakhtiari called the run play to Montgomery. So, did he call it in the huddle? Did Rodgers have complete control on play calls on that drive?

You bring up a great point. I've seen some sideline bickering the last few seasons after a running play where I believe Rogers wanted to throw the ball more. However, Al is correct ,the O line needs to play better and if we're in a close game the balanced attack will prevail bc I think that our running game has improved.

MM and Rodgers. through the years, have told us what it looks like, generally speaking.

It seems to me we have been told over the years:

-all plays in this offense (and probably any NFL offense) have built-in pre-snap adjustments allowing for flipping the entire formation, motion to adjust set (including extra protection) and route adjustment based on what the defense is showing. These are by design, and are an extension of the base play that was called.

-great majority of plays have at least one check from pass to run, or vice versa, so if the defense comes out and shows a look that has a great advantage against the pass play called, there is a built-in check to a pre-defined run play to get the offense the edge. This is built into the design of the original play call.

-the wild card. It has been years now that MM has gone on record as saying Rodgers has been given ultimate control of the play call at the LOS as he sees fit. This means while all the above conditions are built-in adjustments and options designed into the core of each play in the offense, Rodgers can simply do whatever he wants. I believe we first heard MM talking about giving Rodgers this kind of freedom between 2011/2012, saying he didn't want to stifle Rodgers unique abilities. He can scrub the entire play and jump to any other play in the book. He can re-position a specific WR or TE to line up anywhere. He can tell any or all WRs what routes to run. All off the cuff. Playground stuff. This is something that has been mentioned by both MM and Rodgers over the years, and you catch little nuggets from other players once in a while-for instance, in one of Graham's interviews he was asked about what it's like playing with 12, and he mentions how he can just control everything at the line- he says, yeah, other QBs can tweak things, but Aaron has complete control.

By and large, the only thing Rodgers doesn't have control of- at least, I've never heard it commented on or seen indications of it- would be selecting the personnel on the field. Of course, he could go no-huddle at anytime to keep the personnel from being swapped out.

Reasons for my optimism...

Rodgers - He has not played up to his normal level. But he has shown he can. I think the injury has affected him more, but the last couple of games he has been getting more mobile. He just needs to know what he can and can't do, and be smart with it.

Cobb and Allison- They are getting both players back. Cobb is Rodgers safety net. He has missed him the last few games. Allison is on the same page as Rodgers and minus the last game that he was really bad in, he has been really good. He has averaged 15 yards per catch. Not bad for a slow guy.
But while those guys were gone, MVS and EQ have shown that they can make plays and be trusted. Earning Rodgers trust now gives them 5 legit WR's.

Graham- While he hasn't been the redzone threat we were hoping for up to this point, I think it will be coming. He and Rodgers are getting more on the same page. 2 years ago it took Cook a while to get going with Rodgers. I think Graham becomes a bigger part of the offense in the 2nd half of the season.

Aaron Jones - I do think they find ways to get him more involved. They brought up needing to get the run game going. Jones can be electric with the ball in his hands. I think they figure it out.

Defense- Clark is a stud. It starts with him. But getting Alexander back will be huge. He has a swagger and energy that rubs off on others. Also King is healthy. Those 2 can make plays on the ball. Also Breeland should factor in.
The part that I like about the defense is they have been really good in second halves of games. They have averaged giving up 7 points per game. They have given up more in the 1st half, but some of that has been the offense with turnovers and putting the defense in a bad spot.

Having the bye week to refocus I think Pettine will have the defense playing at a higher level in the 2nd half of the season.

In my eyes the team has shown signs that they can be really good. They have just hurt themselves with drops, or missed kicks or bad penalty's at bad times. I think they get that cleaned up and start looking like the team we envisioned!

RC - I agree with your points but I would add that Bulaga missing parts of games has caused some of the inconsistency on offense. The 49ers game is a good example. The offense scored 30 of their 33 points while Bulaga was in the game.

The defense is coming together but we need better play from our OLBs. We are getting killed on the edge against the ground game and we have had virtually no pass rush from the outside.

Finally if we eliminate penalties from our STs we can win in that phase four games as well.

If we can keep the OL healthy and get some improvement from our OLBs this team has a good chance to have a strong season. Now that we're healthy there are no excuses injury wise. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Remember when it was thought that Bulaga would be on the PUP list for the first 6 games? I shudder to think how the offense would have performed without him. I was surprised when I read Bulaga so far has played 87% of the possible offensive snaps.

When McCarthy says they need more running attempts, I interpret that to mean that play action isn't working very well (and it isn't).

Play action doesn't work very well if you don't run the ball enough.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play-action_pass

It very well could mean that he told Rodgers to quit checking out of run plays so they can better setup play action......and better setup his playaction bootlegs.

Despite many fan claims, MM is not stupid.

It is clear as day that MM calls run plays, and too many end up being switched to Pass plays. MM won't call out Rodgers in a presser, but he will state the fact- "we need to run the ball more."

It's not stubborn mike on this one. It's stubborn Aaron.

Because Mike McCarthy is not stupid, and when the playcaller continually says "we need to run the ball more", or "Frankly, we need more rushing attempts" repeatedly over the course of multiple seasons, it's pretty effing clear he wants the ball run more, but it's not happening.

The only way it could possibly not be happening, is if someone is checking out of the runs and instead passing the ball more.

Unless, of course, you truly believe a full grown man would knowingly stand in front of a video camera and room full of people all armed with tape recorders, laptops, pencil and paper who are going to publish on a world-wide level every word he says, and openly criticize himself for not doing something that he regularly says he must do.

It's a sniff test thing, or maybe just a logic thing. I'm willing to air on the side of "it makes sense", chastise me as you will.

MM says the biggest thing to come out of the bye week self-scout was more rushing attempts. One would have thought that was the biggest thing going in!! MM is no Churchill, to be sure, but he might have made a more pithy observation. To be fair, we will need to see how Packers play Sunday to accurately judge the mid-season adjustments.

I have an easy fix. Someone needs to swap the current offensive playbook with the Chiefs though. Short passes, quick pitches... you know move the chains... build rhythm... score points. Why is this such a struggle to implement?

I have a simpler solution. Rodgers throws the ball to the open WR. If they are open, throw it to them. Move the chains, get first downs, get touchdowns.

In researching my football book, what I have learned is that in the heat of the game....the coaches are trying to find which pre-determined plays that will work against the defense on the field. When they review the game tape, they find what they might have done to play better. Neither play review process, during the game or after, says the team finds the perfect plays only what they think might have worked.
Usually, during the film review a play the coaches thought would/should work would have IF (big if) a lineman had his head on the right side of the defense player or the runner had hit the right hole, or the receiver didn't square his route off at the top of the route.
So when a coach says they need to run more, of course they want a balanced attack. The reality is that when the game is progressing, they call the plays that match the defense's weakness. In Green Bay's case....you have Rodgers so the pass is their strength. What the coaches want is for the players to do their job on every play and see which team can execute the best during the game.

Putting things in order. The penalties are from players; Time off, missing time, part-timers, and new comers. Watch and see if Breeland doesn't get called. MM can't give things away before playing. The press is on his every move. It looks more like a Lynch mob, then a jury waiting for the evidence before the season is played out. The lack of play by Jones might be do to penalties too. I don't believe they gave up on him. But Dix has been criticized for lack of hitting. Brice Hits! And when there is lack of ILB play; because CMIII won't move and Ryan down, you play the hitter. So lets look at the biggest problem right now. The hot shot QB criticizes the Wrs. Criticizes the game plan, Just plain Criticizes now. I know people have made a idol out of A-Rod. His money is talking and not his performance. He gets time off and continually distances himself from his teammates now. But yet they have to rally around him. Any body associated with the packers knows it. So lets wait and see how many run plays happen. Let's wait and see how this OL plays. Lets see if Crosby doesn't screw up. Let's see if A-Rod can shut the hell up and just play a good game. We've all decided he is the most important person in Green Bay.

-Penalties have killed the Packers this year. At least 2 of our long kick returns had penalties to bring them back. they have had a TD taken away, and a lot of 3rd down conversions get taken back due to penalty.

-Clinton-Dix and Brice have struggled with tackling. Brice is a hitter but he hasn't been hitting. Outside of a couple of good hits he has been really soft, and has not wrapped up at all.

-Rodgers has struggled. Even as he has struggled he is still better then pretty much all the QB's. Not sure about the distancing himself from teammates. I haven't heard anything about that.

Morrison, Crawford were called to often. MM was in Brown's face. Brice can't go back in coverage and is having trouble. Rodgers continues to get time away. Sure it's injury. But the criticizm is there.

I quit watching MM pressers a long time ago. Nobody tells you less about what's actually going on than MM.

How can you tell you're getting dumbed down answers or half answers from MM in a presser? His lips are moving.

Yeah, MM pressers are pretty well useless. Given that he has been throwing the same "need to run more" sound bite out for the last five years, no real information is passed along. Such is this time of fake everything.

There is no competitive edge to be gained for the
packers if McCarthy gives informative answers to the press, but there's a great deal of competitive edge to be gained for their opponents.

it's just that simple, and that's why you're exactly right.

Very hard to run the ball consistently when your playing catchup and O line is missing blocks. This week I feel positive mainly because injured players ,especially Rodgers, will be rested and ready to go. Defense needs to slow down Ram running attack. Rams are due !

Yes this game is going to be the perfect barometer for what the rest of the season is going to mean. Going to see them play the Jets with my three sons 20,18 and 11 the day before Christmas Eve for their first Packer game. First football game for them. I'm hoping I'm not going just to yell at McCarthy.

Especially meaningful for me as I never pushed any of them towards any particular team well maybe jokingly. But my oldest in particular is a die-hard Yankee fan and now also a die hard Packer fan . Youngest is as well. Middle I really don't know, he has never stuck with any team.

By the way my Jet fan older brother, won't commit.

Life is beautiful hope the rest of season is.

If they’re going to replace McCarthy, I’d seriously consider the Brohm brothers. What they did against Ohio State was impressive. Plus, the GB ties.

I'd stay away from college coaches with no NFL coaching experience. I don't have data to back it up, but it seems those coaches don't do terribly well.

Interesting article on APC today for those who haven't seen it...

Yes, but both Brohms have NFL experience as QB’s. Jeff was in and out of the league for 7 seasons. That’s fairly rare for college coaches.

If this season marks the end of this head coach - so be it. If that is what it takes to get the most of these players and in particular this offense. At this point, I am not sure why this team under-performs. But, like the replacement of Ted Thompson, a change may be needed.

My bigger worry is that our franchise QB is at the root of the problems for this offense. As the on-field general of the offense, he may be the roadblock to a real run game and he may be the reason for ignoring the underneath pass and get-it-out-quick play. We all marvel at his comebacks and tight window throws but this drama may be of his making.

All I know is that this offense is under-performing and the team overall is playing undisciplined ball. How and when this will be fixed will be answered in the next 5 or 6 games.

Confessions of a Polluted Mindset: A Packers Brain Drain
By Jersey Al on Oct 24, 2018

"Andy Herman: I personally can't wait for Andy's Friday film session where he will take a deep-dive on Ha Ha Clinton-Dix."

I agree, this will be interesting to read.

"Rams: The Rams are going to score their points on the Packers' defense. The Packers are just going to need to score more. For me, the key to this game will be the Packers' offensive line, as the Rams lead the NFL in pressure percentage (they've gotten pressure on 36.9% of quarterback dropbacks.)"

Yup, need to score more points than the opponent...I agree about the offensive line being key vs the Rams. I expect the Packers to double-team Aaron Donald almost 100% so that's going to leave Suh 1v1 which will be a tough match-up for whoever draws him. I expect AR12 to bolt the pocket often...pressure or not. Thanks for providing the pressure graphic.

"Defense: I'd love to be optimistic that with Jaire Alexander back and Bashaud Breeland now ready to play, the Packers will be in better shape in the secondary. But then I remember it's still Ha Ha and Brice behind them."

HHCD isn't the problem. It's possible Brice will be replaced in the line-up...we'll see. I'd rather the nickel defense have four CB types and one safety (HHCD) and eliminate Brice from the equation. King, Alexander, Jackson, and Breeland/TW.

i think i would have been better with McCarthy suggesting that the team reduce the penalties it has evoked and improve take-aways and situational offense.
