Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Holy Packers Dumpster Fire Batman.

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Offense - This was just another case where Aaron Rodgers hijacked the game when faced with a multi-touchdown deficit. Only HE can bring them back. Sometimes that results in amazing performances, other times it results in routs.

Defense - What can you say... defensive line getting manhandled, linebackers not doing much, defensive backs looking confused pre-snap, and pointing fingers after easy TDs are given up. What's old is new again.

Rodgers - This had to be the most inaccurate I can remember Rodgers. Maybe he should have taken a football with him to Hawaii?

The Game Plan - Has Mike McCarthy returned? That was the most uncreative, non-Lafleur-like game plan we've seen in his two years here. Were they hoping going this route would confuse the Saints?

Panic. - Have to laugh at how LaFleur said at halftime that with limited snaps, he hadn't even gotten into his game plan yet and he was not going to panic. That lasted for one series and then Rodgers-ball took over (5 rushing attempts for Jones and Dillon in the 2nd half).

DL - I'll go back to what I said at roster cut-down time. I would have let Lancaster go, save $1M in cap space and give his snaps to Slaton/Heflin. Could not possibly be any worse.

Who killed Kenny? - I hate to say it, but other than the one early play where he came close to Winston on a stunt rush, Kenny Clark was rather invisible. I spotted him jogging after ball carriers a few times. He looked gassed after two series. .

Bohorquez - If the offense were to continue like this (it really can't, right?), he'll get plenty of opportunities. That could make this the move of the year.

After all the preseason talk about how "hungry" this team is, I'd say the Packers looked like they ate themselves into a stupor and couldn't get off the couch.

Bright spot - Special Teams weren't horrible.

Nice guys - Is there a culture issue with the Packers - are they all just too nice? Call me old school "get off my lawn guy" if you want, but how long has it been since a Packers defense has had even one player that opponents are intimidated by? No one is afraid of being laid out by a Packers player.

Brady - Far be it from me to say anything good about Tom Brady, but what do you think we would have seen on the Packers' bench if Tom Brady was their quarterback? Would he be just sitting slumped on the bench looking sad?

"After all the preseason talk about how "hungry" this team is, I'd say the Packers looked like they ate themselves into a stupor and couldn't get off the couch." You nailed it, Al! Thanks for the laugh.

You know that the Packers had a miserable horrible game when Special Teams ( ! ) is the lone bright spot on the day.

If they barely punt or kick it certainly helps our coverage. I’d argue we didn’t look great but being off the field saved that unit.

"61% of CHTV readers chose struggle. CHTV readers are smart."

Hmmm... I'm in that 39% who didn't think it would matter BUT I based my vote on last year. Last year they came out scoring 43, 42 and then 37 points against the Saints. What a FOOL I was for believing what the Packers leaders and coaches were saying .

This Monday against the Lions the Packers SHOULD score 35 to 40 points IMO. They should be able to RUN and pass the ball with ease against THAT defense. Now if that happens the absolute LAST thing I want to see is any smugness from the Packers players. Lets just cut the smug OUT, and put the FOCUS faces in. Games faces the rest of the year or at least until the taste of an ass whooping from Jamis Winston, WR's, a D-Line, and Secondary like that is washed out.

Hint to Packers... That won't be washed out until FEBRUARY!!

I actually disagree: I think the Packers will come out and play their typical struggle-bus Lions game where they show stretches of good play and stretches where they can't get out of their own way. They'll win by a TD, but they won't dominate and they won't pull away.

We'll be right here talking about the same things at this point next week and wondering just what's up with this team as they head out to SF to play a 1-1 9ers team in their home opener.

If we ask Kevin King to play off coverage again, I will assume Barry is intellectually incapable of being a DC. If we don’t come out fired up, I’m going to be asking if LaFleur is really a coach not merely a scheme guy or if the Rodgers situation is just screwing up his ability to coach. If that is the case, the team needs to think about the unthinkable.

Too late for buyer's remorse CW. Barry's the DC (or my guess is until Gute tells Lafleur to replace him with Gray if things don't get better by the sixth game) and it's up to him to get this new scheme up to speed. Utter confusion on the defensive side of the ball. Going to rough for a bit...

Once again, thanks for your thoughts. My is not much different. What I believe is that Aaron Rodgers had his game plan and he just dismissed what was agreed and planned by coaches. I also believe MLF is afraid to admit that publicly and to complain to AR because he is afraid to lose AR for this season. We knows, and MLF is much more informed about that Jordan Love can play, but it is still at least one year away to be leader of the offense with no questions about. Also, he can be afraid not to spoil nice progression Jordan Love is doing with premature starting. Why I believe that can be the case? Because, when Jordan Love replaced AR, offense suddenly started to move the ball. And I believe because that team plan was executing by JL, not by Aaron Rodgers plan...

I believe Packers will win game against Lions (Lions have huge problems with injuries, mora than Saints, as I read), but the problem will not disappear with that win. Also, Aaron Rodgers has huge problem with Tampa 2 D, and every team who applied that kind of D (and have at least OK talent on D) can count on win against AR. The first who noticed that was KC in 2011, when Packers were undefeated until the worst team that season did not apply that kind of D. Every other team who produce that kind of D won against Packers while they were under AR.

That is what I saw in the AR era and I might be wrong, because of my limited football knowledge...

Pick, Pick, Pick. It's not going to inspire Rodgers at all. Pushing change isn't going to bring you a winner. Yet thats exactly what the problem is. You keep talking up Love. The Fire will spread. So now everybody thinks the OL did just great, now that PFF grades are in. So lets change this whole team if it worked on the OL. Lets Do the same to the DL. Start Clayton and move Raji (Clark) outside. After seeing this team give up; 2 of the 5 TDs quickly. Who wants to tackle in the secondary? It isn't Savage. If it works for this OL. Maybe it needs to happen in the secondary. That way you'll get off Kings back. The problem isn't snap counts. It 's who can tackle. For The last 10 years: Why do the Lbs on other teams always have more tackles then the Packers? Any great RB will break this defense. So whats next for this Team? Follow the Blueprint. Praise Gute.

I'm trying really hard not to be a jerk.

1) Starting left tackle out with injury- causes shuffle in OL or inexperience to take role

2) Cap issues and a surprise reduction in the salary cap of almost 20 million meant keeping your All Pro starting center was not feasible if you wanted to hold your team together. This necessitated a replacement or more shuffling

3) you have a choice to start a guy who played RG last year the job, or the guy that heads-and-tails outperformed all other options during camp and preseason the job. Who do you chose?

The logical move in D-Line rotation was discussed all of the off-season, yet we see the deficient alignment return to deplorable results. "We like our guys" bullshit. Yes, Slayton should work the NT with Clark moving outside and where was the rookie ? (inactive). We saw this brilliant strategy on display during the Pack v Denver S.Bowl . I will maintain my case against Lowry who should have been moved along last Spring. Heflin out-played Lancaster and can split the G/T. Use more four-man and five-man down linemen looks and bring your best safety into the "Star" and that ain't Amos who looked the fool watching a scrub TE catch a floater in front of him. Last Hurrah, Swan song whatever; tighten the ship or you will be viewing a redux of the sherman years debacle. King should be jettisoned , now.

Not many bright spots in this game which is disappointing for a season opener. We have seen this type of game a handful of times in the LaFleur tenure and that is worrisome. He gets so badly outcoached and out schemed that the game is lost before the half. There is little in-game response or adjustment to the situation which should tell us something. The Packers have a MVP QB, stable of WRs, TEs and RBs and nothing could be done to chip away at the lead? Something is wrong here and that needs to change.

In true Packer tradition our defense is bad - a carryover from last season. Everyone likes Joe Barry's energy but energy doesn't overcome weak D-line play and confused secondary. It will be difficult to overcome the skill gaps and poor organization of resources. The Saints treated our D like preseason tryout players and took anything that they wanted. Very disappointing.

There is a lot of season ahead BUT teams know right now that the Packers can be run over and that Rodgers's tendencies are still his ceiling.

Whatever he says or does at halftime doesn't seem to have much effect, either. Good teams like the Steelers and Chiefs were able to overcome deficits and win. Both teams were able to capitalize on special teams plays, clamp down with their defenses, and get their offenses in gear in the second half.

Having to rely solely (whether it's chosen or not) on Rodgers to bring the back isn't a recipe for success.

Hard to know if it’s MLF or Rodgers abandoning the game plan and playing street ball. Handful of times is hardly alarming, though. The guy has only lost 7 games since he took over. I firmly believe you won’t see the full MLF scheme until Rodgers is gone.

We have to stop griping about MLF's playcalling because we have no idea what play was called. Once AR is gone and probably retired, MLF and MMcrthy should write a book about who honestly called the plays that were run at the line of scrimmage. One poster noted that it looked like MM was back. I think AR was calling MM plays in the huddle. At least I hope so, if not MLF has to go. GPG

I am most worried about the defense. While neither side showed much energy, the defense just looked confused and out of position most of the game. I hope this is not a harbinger of things to come. The Joe Barry hire bothered me when it happened (lousy resume) and the first game reinforced that concern. If the defense doesn't show up strongly against Detroit, the Barry hire has the potential to sink the season.

I too was not a fan of Joe Barry. Aside from the poor track record, I thought it was a young coach picking someone that he knew. Just as troublesome is the lack of change on the defensive side of the ball. Watching our D-line get shredded and secondary running around in confusion is disheartening. I can't see how the Packers can expect to beat the big teams with this D. Tampa Bay, Buffalo, KC and anyone with a TE will be a problem.

Certainly the narrative was that this was a case where LaF decided on a scheme and then looked for someone with experience in the scheme.

Energy needs certainty. It’s pretty obvious that there was uncertainty among many on D. That should improve. However, the usage of players and making King play off suggests Barry has little clue. That type of thing is harder to excuse, surely?

I totally agree with Jersey Al about the defense. How many years have we had to watch them get owned by physical teams? To damn many! Neither Gute or TT seemed inclined to get tough guys; getting smaller-fast or lanky-skinny DBs, not addressing the ILB, and using soft Northwestern guys on the DL. How about drafting a Kam Chancellor type instead of a 184 lb. safety? Or a tough, aggressive ILB? Just once, Gute, please! When your most intimidating defender is a 190 pound cover CB, you know you’re in trouble.

Tough D-lines (Tampa, SF) and solid O-lines all but control the games and negate any Packer gameplan. Our D-line is at least a grade below and can be controlled by decent O-lines. New Orleans ran and pass blocked with ease on Sunday. We have seen this playout numerous times before and it will become more evident as we get to the real season.

Offense -
The offense looked slow. Looked out of sync. It looked like the Saints knew what was coming. Rodgers was slow getting the ball out and it brought back shades of 2018.

Defense -
One of the things LaFleur talked about wanting with his defense was for his CB's to be up pressing WR's. He wanted them being aggressive. And then the game comes and you see the CB's playing 10+ yards off the ball again. What's old is new again.

Rodgers -
At least Rodgers explained what happened to his first interception. Maybe getting double nutted was a good wake up call for him. I believe that after last year's off season Rodgers felt he didn't need to put in the work he normally did in the past. I guess he forgot that last year no one had the offseason, but this year everyone did.

The Game Plan -
Almost no motion, no creativity. Its a good time for LaFleur to look at what happened and realize the game plan was flawed. And just because you get down, does not mean you can't be creative.

Panic. -
Not going to lie. I really didn't panic at half time either. Scoring right before half, I thought there was a realistic chance they would be within 7 after the first drive of the 2nd half. And then Rodgers takes a double nut shot and the route is on.

DL -
Heflin should be playing ahead of Lancaster. Its as simple as that. Lancaster has not been as good as his rookie year. Heflin looks like he is easily the better option.

Who killed Kenny? -
Kind of catching onto a theme. Perhaps the weather did have more of an impact then we want to admit? The whole team looked sluggish.

Bohorquez -
He was fine. Probably the most consistent player on the team.

Bright spot -
Special Teams weren't horrible. I like Kylin Hill, but I would much rather see Rodgers back there returning kicks.

Nice guys -
To be fair. How many teams in the league have players like that?

Brady -
Rodgers definitely is no Brady. I saw comments of Rodgers separating himself from the team on the sidelines. IF that continues this will make for a long, long year.

GB needs Clark to be elite. They are paying him as if he were. I've been writing for two years that Clark has forgotten to play the run. By all means see if he can play DT (3 Tech) as a run stuffing pass rusher, but if he can't, then back to NT for him.

Agree, he gives up blocking angles in his attempt to get in the backfield instead of controlling/jamming the blocker. He performed well towards the end of last season especially vs Tampa when he was jamming cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice, jamin' till the jam is through.

The only difference it wasn’t the first game of the year. Quite frankly, I’d rather it be the first game and I believe there is a very good reason for it , which is fixable.

Was it stupid not to play your starting Defense with a new coordinator during the pre-season, YES! Was it stupid for Rodgers to vacation all Summer and miss OTAs, YES! Will we get better? History with Rodgers says……YES! Now, lets RELAX and move on…..!

I think we have to ask questions of the coaching. There is no excuse for starting a season flat. If Rodgers is to be believed, they thought it would be a breeze on O. In what universe is any NFL game a gimme? After umpteen years as a pro, am I the only one who finds that a staggeringly idiotic frame of mind?

I’m starting to worry that what the off season and last dance scenario has done has made Rodgers uncoachable: just free to do what he wants due to the absence of any control. Alternatively, LaFleur has been influenced by Rodgers or the hype around this O. Either way, that was a game plan that looked poor and yet again gave up on the obvious ploy of running Dillon when he started with near 5 ypc and kept the ILBs busy. Deja Vu. Was it LaFleur or Rodgers or both. I’m not as sure as Al that it was all Rodgers. It was still damning to repeat the same mistake yet again. Someone needs to take LaFleur aside for his and our own good.

AR threw plenty of footballs in practice. Bringing a football to Hawaii seems like hyperbole to me.

How about those 2.80 WRs/play, 1.18 TEs/play, 1.02 RBs/play? Sounds like 11 personnel was the order of the day. I am not happy with those numbers.

Allow me to put all you NEGATIVE fans at ease.

Take week one and think of it as what the old preseason week three game was about, finding the necessary adjustments when your starters played, though only for a half. The real season starts week two with the original 16 game slate beginning. Yes, the week one game counts, unlike the preseason previously mentioned, it's a game that could be forgotten about, to a point, and have little effect on the record at the season's end as to playoff seeding.

We all know the Packers will be in the playoffs, it's what happens in the playoffs that have been crushing, and maybe this is the playoff bust game come early. That's too optimistic for me but should help erase the angst /disgust many are feeling today.

Your welcome.

I've always had optimism, just not to the blind level, and most cannot understand the difference. This week showed how uncontrolled many are with their fandom when I show more optimism and reality-based thinking. However, I'll claim the NEGATIVE title at some point, I'm sure.

Occasionally, I think there is a fine line between the two. Yes, I would agree that some, will have optimism without realism at times because they are fans of a particular team and want them to do well, thus lending to, or what can be perceived as, a blind eye. That said, when you have a Franchise QB it is more warranted than not.

I’ve always thought of myself as a realistic optimist, meaning I’m seeking and writing about the positive or optimistic side of things, but with substantiated evidence or realism. I’ve also noticed that much negative points of view on most blogs come without substantiated evidence, thus lending to too much uneducated subjectivity. I suspect thats why some get a lot of thumbs down.

I’d like to add that impressed with the intelligence level on this site, whether that be the writers or bloggers. Over the years, I’ve learned quite a bit.

"After all the preseason talk about how "hungry" this team is, I'd say the Packers looked like they ate themselves into a stupor and couldn't get off the couch."

Quote of the week. Good one. But as far as fearing getting hit by somebody, perhaps Amos. Though he came over from the Bears, where there is a culture of "knock them on their butts", not "pat them on the butts after a good play against us."

Good summary, Al.

I thought the players and Matt LaFleur seemed to take the shellacking they got from the Saints as if it were no big deal. They should be jumping up and down and I wouldn't mind a little swearing thrown in. I was totally pissed with everything and wished I could see a little of that emotion from them. Hearing Rodgers say it was only one game and there are 16 games left was sickening. What I would like to have him say it was his fault and he should have been there with his players during the off season workouts rather than chasing around in Hawaii. Well, as Forest Gump said..."That about it".

how does this team turn it around when their leader is making excuses and blaming the defense for the loss? you can turn shit around when you have a leader. this team does not. the finger pointing and the excuses are starting already. the sad part is, that rodgers is just hurting his own legacy. the same legacy he was so damn worried about when he was demanding to be more involved in the packers decisions, thats the legacy he is fucking up all by himself now. i was on his side all offseason, because i thought hed come in here guns blazing and prepared. he did the opposite, and he looks ike a fucking asshole. and instead of owning it, hes making bullshit excuses on his buddy pat macafees horse shit show.

AR did say that the OL's protection was pretty good. He could have just not said much of anything. He diplomatically sidestepped the run blocking. He didn't criticize the personnel groupings. Not knowing how to beat two high safeties is hard to believe. AR is experienced and LaFleur should have a whole bunch of 2 high safety beaters. I still think the problem is with teams with really good inside linebackers. Demario Davis is an All Pro. I am not sure what Kwon Davis has left but he was fast. Their other two guys, Baun was okay and the Packers made Eliss look okay for the first time in his career.

RELAX?

I do understand its' context and its' intended implications for the Packers but . . .

Unfortunately the Top 30 players were allowed to " Relax " during the Pre - Season instead of getting some practice game time and perfecting their timing, rhythms and skill sets against live opposing teams, be they vanilla schemes played against opponents, 1st, 2nd or 3rd stringers.

The Saints weren't relaxed, they came hard, ripe and ready to play a 60 minute slugfest against a team full of starters who for the most part watched the Pre-Season from the sidelines rather than getting game readying reps.

Spot on, Al. Matt LF has no excuses for the Fiasco In Florida.

This is his work agenda this week:

1) 4 hour live practices in full pads and lots of hitting.(probably not allowed). No red shirts for the QB's.

2) A frank discussion with Mr. Man Bun. You in or you out? He should be sitting on the practice squad soon.(With hopes another team claims him like Washington). Problem solved.

3) A frank discussion with Joe Barry. Are you a defensive coordinator or a sub for Ronald McDonald?

4) A frank discussion with Kevin King. Are you a defensive back or are you working for Door Dash?

5) A frank discussion in the mirror with Matt LF. Are you a coach/boss or simply a cheerleader?

Vince Lombardi is spinning in his grave.

Pessimist, or should I say realist, says Packers, Murphy, LaFleur, Hackett, Turner, Bahk fulfilling enemy year.

Optimist says TB lost to Saints 38-3 too last year (well into the season, 11-08-20) and won the Super Bowl.

Apparently NFCG wasn't rock bottom for Kevin King, so bench him for a rookie to throw salt in the wounds. Given he's in a contract year again (for another team I'll assume) perhaps he'll find dignity to play his way back on the field to avoid earning the vet minimum for the rest of career.

I am absolutely astonished by Jersey Al. Finally, Finally, he spoke truth and wisdom and laid it on the line !!! Thank you Al !! The hard truth!!

Lastly, I heard Marr Lafleur said, paraphrasing that hopefully this azz whooping will get us motivated? After losing to Tampa Bay in the NFL championship game at HOME wasn't enough? Or, all the other heartbreaking games we've endured. Horrible, maybe the Packers against Detroit maybe, but SF. is gonna kick our butter if this team doesn't get serious fast!!!!

The offense has too many talented players at the skill positions to continue to play as poorly as they did in the opening game.
This ongoing concept that Rodgers is changing MLF's plays and game plan has reached the point of an absurd conspiracy theory which only comes up when the Packers lose a game. They are 28-8 since MLF took over and most of those losses were bad losses which should not be blamed on any one player, (e.g, the 38-10 loss to Tampa in 2020 and the NFCCG loss the SF 37 -20). The entire team including the coaches failed in those games just like against NO this past Sunday.

If we're going to blame the losses on Rodgers for his alleged subversion then we need to credit him only for the 28 wins, which is ridiculous.

Putting the banal conspiracy theory and the NO game behind us my concerns are with the defense because they showed nothing different under Barry than they have in the past. In fact they looked worse. No sense of urgency, weak hitting, lack of a pass rush and totally confused and out of position. I don't care what Barry's scheme is. These are professional football players, you rally to the football and you make the play. It's still a matter of shedding blocks and making solid tackles. The defense was totally overmatched from the opening drive.

I realize that we are in a different era but the game is still about blocking and tackling. As Coach Lombardi said "the team that tackles better and blocks better will win the game.' That is as true today sit was in the '60s. The Packers did neither against the Saints.

The Packers need to get past depending on Rodgers for everything and the fans need to get past the idea that it matters who calls the plays, whether it's MLF or Rodgers. It is the execution of the play that matters. It makes no sense to think that if MLF calls the play it would work while if Rodgers changes the play it will not work. Neither will work if the OL, QB, RBs and the receivers don't do they jobs. The result of the play and the QB play are the output of OL play regardless who calls the play and who the coach and QB are. Football 101.

Time to move on and beat the Lions. WE are a better team than we showed against NO. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Rodgers seems to take over the play calling when we fall behind by two scores. I don't have the stats so I could be full of shit, but I don't think it's a coincidence that we ran almost not at all in the second half of the last two games.

We stopped running against Tampa in the NFCCG because Jones was injured and we were down by 18 points. They did run few times with Williams but Tampa wasn't worried about Williams beating them. The MLF offense is built around around Jones and he can score from anywhere on the field via the run or the pass. The Packers did put up 16 second half points (should have been 17). But unlike the Packers defense the Bucs doesn't collapse and plays a full 60 minutes of football.

I'm not sure why they gave up on the run against the Saints other than they felt the OL was not getting the job done on the running game and again the fact that they were down 17-3. The problem is the GB media never asks why they stopped running the ball, they just throw these softball questions at the HC after every game.
Hoping for a better effort against the Lions. Thanks, Since '61

As usual, excellent point from '61. I agree on everything except one thing. I don't think we have all that talent in attack that many think of. I believe that all MLF play is fundamentally based on running. If the race is stopped, and they defend them knowing that we will go with passes, our WRs all have big problems opening up (Adams, less ...)
I don't even want to talk about the defense (I think it is right to wait at least 5 games, but the conditions are not good)
Anyway I think we will lose a lot of games this season, but I think we will go to the play of. The important thing is to find in that moment the right synergy between all the members of the team ..... then maybe we will have the possibilities

It's not effort it's a lack of talent on D. I don't understand the lack of effort excuse. Does anyone really think King or Lowry or Lancaster or Sullivan weren't trying? They were, they're just not any good. That's four holes on defense. Then you look at a few others; Cambell, P. Smith, Keke, Gary... any future all-pros here? And please don't say Gary, we're still waiting in year three.

One great CB, one good but overrated defensive lineman, and two decent safeties doesn't make for a great D.

This is a bad defense on a talent level. Add in a clueless DC and what we saw is what we'll be seeing against good teams. I have no idea how they will stop any of those high-powered teams. Gute and his Sancho Panza MLF, better open their eyes, there really are giants out there and not just windmills they're fighting.

Not sure why ever is so surprised, what I saw in preseason is what I saw on Sunday ( and the last 10 plus years). Packers no edge, beat up in the trenches, and when Rodgers has a bad game also it’s blow out city. It’s just that Rodgers only has about 3 -4 of those a year. The rest of the team does it 16 games.( yet the blame Rodgers crowd if twice as vocal, because screaming makes you right( Damn I should of said that in all caps) ) The positive was special teams weren’t awful.

The coaching staff are a worry; everybody is on the same page. We need someone who is not on the page - who is pointing out that our game plan is poor, the calls are bad and predictable and that we can't react to what is in front of us. Our H.C. makes these bland comments about "finding ways to get him[whoever him is?] the ball" just call some bloody plays where he gets the ball rather than lamenting later. "I've got to do better" is a nothing comment. I've got to use A.J.Dillon more or bench Rogers or Adams are comments.
I'm sick of the crap - just play
