Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Love Will Save the Day

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Whitney Says:

When you're feeling down and out
And you've got troubles on your mind
Love will save the day
When you're feeling full of doubt
And fear has got you in a bind
Love will save the day

After a frustrating and somewhat abysmal 3 quarters of offensive football, it would have been easy to be full of doubts, assume this wasn't our day, play it out, and leave it in the rear-view mirror. But Jordan Love would have none of that. He showed he is fearless and led the Packers offense on a very improbable comeback with a unit missing four key starters. Love truly saved the day and sent an important message - we're never out of it. Love needs to keep developing in the physical and mechanical aspects of playing the quarterback position, but in the all-important intangibles, like leadership and mental toughness, he seems to be just fine already.

26 and Under - The Packers took the field on Sunday with their oldest player being Jon Runyan at the ripe old age of 26. And honestly, they played the way you would expect from a bunch of young guys - inconsistently. But the talent is there, it just needs to be honed with the benefit of experience. So be patient, this is a season for growth. And if they win a decent number of games that's just icing on the cake.

Wicks Got Quicks- I started to get this feeling against Atlanta, but I'm feeling real good about Dontayvion Wicks. You could make an argument that he has been the most reliable target for Jordan Love. He uses his elite RAS 10-yd split, vertical and boad jump skills to get more separation than any other Packer receiver except for maybe Jayden Reed and he catches any ball thrown to him. He could be your proverbial draft steal as a fifth-rounder.

Delayed Uptempo - For the last two seasons I've bemoaned the lack of uptempo deployed to try to get the offense out of its doldrums. It turned out to be the perfect move on Sunday and I'm left to wonder what could have been if deployed the last two seasons. Of course, there was different quarterback running the offense and with how much  he loved to get pre-snap reads and make last second adjustments, it's easy to see uptempo landing on the "things I don't like" list. Obviously, Love doesn't mind at all.

Returner Switch - Anyone else wondering why the Packers moved Jayden Reed off punt returns mid-game in favor of Keisean Nixon? With the Packers so short at the CB position, especially after Valentine went down, it seems odd to me to expose Nixon to more possible big hits.

Cheers to Ballantine - You have to give the kid credit. For most of the fourth quarter, this Practice Squad call-up was tasked with covering Chris Olave. While Olave got his catches, Ballantine was always right there and defended them well.

#MoreMusgrave - My week-long campaign for the Packers to use their dynamic tight end more seemed to work. Luke was targeted eight times against the Saints and led the receivers with six catches. Getting him open in short to intermediate zones just seems to come very easily and it's a great way to keep the sticks moving. And some day, Love will be routinely connecting with him further down the field.

Pet Peeve Dep't. - OK. False start penalties are a huge fun suck for NFL games. I mean, look at this video. Does Newman deserve to be penalized because he flinched an inch or so? Did his hand come off the ground? No. Was he moving as the ball was snapped? No. Did he gain some kind of advantage over the defense? No. I would love for this not to be a penalty unless one of the three things I just mentioned occurred. SO much wasted time would be saved.

Let me say first that this was a fun game to watch and what made it better was the win. Not sure if the Packers would have pulled it off if Carr would have played the whole game. I am saying no they would not.

The defense played very good even though we lost players. Berry did a good job with the play calling and the players executed.

MLF is showing that he is willing to take chances. Yes some worked and some did not. He called a game that showed he is willing to let it all hang out. Championship teams go all in. The young team responded. They looked like they were having fun.

I am having a hard time figuring out this team. It will be interesting to see what happens when we get players back from injury.

Win or lose they are fun to watch.

To be fair, Carr's performance to that point had been better than in the first two games of the season. For all we know, averages would have caught up with him and he would've coughed up a couple picks to fuel a Packers comeback. The Packers beat the team on the field. That's all that matters.

After the initial drive, our rush (Kenny Clark) disappeared for a while. Give Carr time in the pocket and he has always been able to maintain possession and get yards. Strangely, Barry seemed reluctant to do anything to disrupt that till the third quarter or the odd third and long when Garry did it for him. Players not coaching.

--Blitzing a veteran QB could be dangerous.
--84 % of defensive snaps could be a reason why Clark disappeared. The other linemen need to step up more which would enable Clark to be fresh at crunch time.

Blitzing Carr has tended not to be. I wasn’t intending to criticize Clark, but the use of DL. Clark was great and, as you said, over used. For example. Barry wouldn’t use Wooden an undersized penetration specialist. That would have been an excellent idea the week before, but less so against a non run first team.

Once a QB gets to the NFL, I’d say anytime you give them time they become pretty darn good. Of course, that is why D-Coordinators put a premium on pressuring the QB and they are paid accordingly.

I was at the game. The energy was the best I have seen at lambeau. The old folks who usually are asking everyone to sit down were on their feet. Pretty cool to see. Jordan Love is a young QB but there are no training wheels on this kid. He is 1st in the NFL on average depth per target. I like it. Now he needs his weapons back. Frustrating at times with a young team but the talent is clearly there. Enagbare, Doubs, Brooks, Wicks, Tom, Walker and Valentine are all day 3 picks in the last 2 years and appear to be steals. That isn't the norm folks...

Thanks JA!! When I saw the title of your article, I was thinking that it was a song. :) And then I remembered this oldie but goodie that pretty much summed up the result of last week…ah the good ole days!!…

https://youtu.be/87eq53LkVrU?si=ibIf61rYt61kGeKR

Yes, lots of things to clean up with technique and knowing where to be and when. But the troops seem energized and motivated to work even harder based on winning their first 2 out of 3 games. And knowing that even being shut out in the 4th quarter may still lead to a win!! We’ve got some tough games coming up so we’ll see how this all shakes out!!

Intetesting takes, Al!

I was expecting that after every TD would be some kind of "love" song released in Lambeau Field and when that was missing I was dissapointed. But after I had second thoughts, maybe it is better not to, because that is how you are starting personal cult. I know that Jordan is pretty balanced person, bit, by time that may produce similar nehaviour as we had witnes with FPQB. And, consequently, somewhat diminish contribution of other players in the team. After all, fooball is team sport. Ans as every team sport need all players to play in coordination, not just stars. We saw the outcome of that disrespect in divisional roundnearly 2022. And we all knew how that finished.

Jordan Love will be top 5 starting QB in a year or maximum 2 years.

False starts are bad habits that snowball. The home team getting them is inexcusable. If as Al says they should get away with ones where his 3-things don't happen, the O-lines will start to find ways to take advantage in a game that leans too far to the O already.

I guess that is what is making this team so much fun this year...they're not 'expected' to be Super Bowl champs. In past years it was constant disappointment. This year the idea is 'lets see what we can do!' and that is refreshing. As the game was going Sunday I told my wife, "this team is going to be awesome in a couple of years".

I Love all the Love Talk. You should have been a preacher.
Still I find it hard to disagree with anything you write.
But I still think a flip here, or there, is more truthful.
Really, we can’t compare Love to Favre or Rodgers.
But I can compare him to Doug Flutie NOW.
You know the guy that was a Bear,
CFL, Bill, and SD player.
(The heroics, Hype, and the beginning of a new era.)
Seems- every fan felt the same in those cities too.
And at some point, maybe he’ll win an award or two.

Good points on Quicks, Uptempo, And Switch.
All good credits for Love for sure.
But Olave tells you the difference per greatness,
and scheme. The waiting is the downer.

LOL on Newman. Everyone here wanted him cut.
Incredible how things turn -out. But for how LONG.

Favre was overweight alcoholic as he started........AR became a diva and a chemtrailer after the only win in his life in 2011.
Love has more talent, more poise and smarts than both of them combined. He will win way more than both of them together.
Love is more Packer People than both of the ever has been. Lombardi would chose Love everyday for leadership and potential.
Love is the opposite of Doug Flutie.

Rodgers was way more Flutie with his complex to be to short. But lets be clear Doug had a bigger heart than Favre and 5 times that of AR. He loved football and in that regards LOVE is just like Flutie.

Agree with everything JA wrote here except the false start. It was pretty evident even live, and the fact that the defense pointed it out, the flag had to come out.

Did anyone else see after the play...can't remember if it was Reed or Wicks that went into the Saints bench area and got a Gatorade bath...Aaron Jones over on the sideline toweling him off. Man, what a teammate and leader. I love Aaron Jones!

Hopefully, most of the injured heal up for Thursday. GPG

It’s interesting to me that one win makes so many happy about all things. There are a lot of positives to take away from that game. Most of those go to the mental strength of Love and the seemingly radically more cohesive team identity evidenced.

However, we were playing a team that has been offensively challenged in terms of both retaining time of possession and the red zone, is missing arguably its best player on O and can’t run even as well as we have been able to in his absence. In addition, its OL hasn’t held up well and its QB wasn’t mobile. This was the archetype of an opponent out D matches up well with. They have also been vulnerable to the run, but we saliently continue to fail to be able to capitalize on that.

This game was exciting for the turn around, for the apparent potential of Love as a leader and when he is given more freedom there’s now clearly more room for him to lift a team in future. It does not however in any way suggest that we’ve faced up to or resolved the ongoing structural problems on O & D (and STs had a bad day too). In fact, New Orleans despite injuries probably illustrated how less temerity in the secondary can produce more not less with less, as Al noted in his Three Plays post yesterday.

This roster is exciting. These coaches less convincing. We didn’t learn much or grow much off field. We weren’t well prepared seemingly. This was a day when the players showed that their make up is great and their collective attitude can turn corners in game. Now it’s time for the coaches to show that they can do the same between them.

My thoughts exactly. Pre-snap penalties are on coaching. Procedural penalties are on coaching. Coaching was a very big part of the Week 2 loss to ATL, and coaching nearly cost us this Week 3 win vs. NO.

On the flip side, coaching was a big part of the comeback win on both O and D. Despite that, it's apparent LaFleur and his staff have much left to figure out.

Happy for the win, but... WOW! We've got a lot to clean up in Aisle 1265.

Don't want to say too much as I've had zero time to review the game, but might try to carve some out tonight.

There's other stuff, as Al pointed out, and more. Disappointing to see Bisaccia's unit fail on that TD return. Yikes. Love's got his long ball accuracy issues, but I chalk most of that up to his getting dialed in with all the new additions. Some overthrows, and some under throws in those first 3 Quarters. I'm trusting in time they will get that ironed out.

Would absolutely LOVE to see Dillon get some rest and have Emmanuel Wilson take his reps. I think he might show a lot better in outside zone.

Lastly, Wicks was a steal. Thrilled to see him getting Targets. If you watch him closely, his separation is Davantesque.

How are pre-snap penalties on the coaching? The players are making these mistakes and there are a lot of first or second year players trying to work out schemes together. Let’s face it, we expected this so we can’t get too critical if we want to be fair. My guess is the coaching staff is teaching proper alignment on each play they run.

Thankful for Love hanging in there when nothing was working. And, I wish that I could roll it up to "Love Will Find A Way" but I just can't turn a blind eye to all the bad football this team is playing. Been watching tape on our O-line and it is not good. The interior of the line is as weak as I have ever seen it. Counting on your QB to throw 44 times to squeak out a victory is reminiscent of Rodgers hero ball offense which we all complained about for a decade. Enjoy it for the short week but shit is about to get real. Sorry for the tether.

So much is pinned on Jones and the hope that he can revive the run or at least RB contribution without blocking. He did, against a terrible team. He can at times, as we’ve seen over his career, but even he does far better when he gets some blocking and, without it, one wonders how he will hold up over the season.

The team meanwhile seems dead set on not trying anything to improve run blocking. In the end, that’s a signal it’s not important enough to them or they aren’t good enough as coaches to change tack. Trying and not succeeding is one thing. Not trying is just acceptance.

I agree the improving the blocking is a key to a championship team, however the coaches can only use what they have available. Pinning it on the coaches is wrong, they're missing two pro bowlers, have two rookies, and the TEs are lacking as blockers. Add to that, the best blocking WR is Watson.

The picky false-start penalties seem to be league wide; and it’s ridiculous.
The D-Line is beginning to stand and point at the O-Line on every series—followed by the Ref robotically and obligingly reaching for his flag.
The most infuriating is the Hoculi crew. They’ve decided to become the focal point. There over-officiating is nauseating.

The message he sent to the team was believe in me. Trust me, trust us. That performance was bigger then just 1 game win. He has the trust in the team now.

This is a pretty good team. They are just young and inexperienced. They should be 3-0, could be 1-2. There will be a lot of ups and downs this year. But they are building something here.

Wicks Got Quicks-
WIcks is becoming a key player in the offense. I really like what I have seen in Wicks. He has probably been the most reliable pass catcher. I don't know if he has a drop yet.

Delayed Uptempo -
I absolutely loved the uptempo on 3rd downs. It didn't allow the defense to substitute and allowed them to find the mismatches. I wouldn't be surprised to see more of this.

Returner Switch -
I was thinking they maybe made the switch because the offense needed the boost? That they needed Reed to go on offense. I was wondering about why they did it though.

Cheers to Ballantine -
Ballantine was much better then I anticipated. When he had to play I was questioning how we were going to be able to stop the Saints. But Ballantine stepped up and played well.

#MoreMusgrave -
Musgrave needs to be have more targets. He had 8, they could target him 10 times a game. He will get the big plays and the key 3rd down plays. Musgrave is quickly developing a rapport with Love. Musgrave has so much potential with his speed alone. But he is becoming the reliable player they need. Musgrave has a very bright future!

Pet Peeve Dep't. -
The part I don't get is how is it when a player like this flinches and its penalized. But an OL in a 2 point stance set down in, can stand up turn and look at the QB, and reset themselves. If a player is set, shouldn't they have to remain set?

I’d say Doubs has had the best hands by far. However, I have to admit that, while he has had drops, Wick’s hands have been very good, which I did not expect from film. If Reed can get that consistent we are laughing.

Yeah Doubs has great hands. Probably the best overall on the team. But Wicks has been the most reliable catching the ball thus far (3 games in).

Reed has great hands too. I think he is a rookie that is still thinking a lot out there. He had a bad day Sunday, but when they needed him the most he made an amazing catch. Great part about that is that Love didn't care what kind of day he had. He went back to him anyways.

Its crazy the young good talent we have right now. Watson, Doubs, Reed, Wicks will likely be our top 4 for a while. It will be really exciting seeing these guys the next couple of years.

I'm a fan of the entire WR room including PS, but seeing Wicks perform, he clearly deserves to move up in the pecking order and I like seeing that take shape too.

Watson Reed Doubs, then ... Wicks? I'm not sure if he always deserves reps ahead of Toure or if it's a matchup thing, but he's right in there IMHO.

I am delighted that this Packer vs Lions game is attracting so much attention. I am happy for we Packer fans and almost equally excited for the Lion's fans...they have waited a long, long time to be relevant.

I loved listening to Jim Irwin and Max McGee on the radio (tv volume down).

Which brings me to this beautiful nugget involving Sterling Sharpe. "He's open, wide open"!

* Now if they could simply run the geese flying south formation on kickoffs...hmmmmm

Too bad the pack is already in deep do do and the game thursday didnt even start. Gimpy wide receiver and running back, no oline to speak of and a rookie Qb playing behind it. All these dam injuries, and ya other teams have injuries too, but not like this. Something to be said about the conditioning program or lack of. Good luck with this. Going forward it doesn't look good for the pack. Bahk is done put a fork in him. He is taking up room now and money and serves no purpose. Medical discharge time.

Now now, his beer chugging abilities after wins are important. No disrespect to Bak, he gave us great yrs as a 4th round draftee.

Like my teenage years, and still to this day, quite fond of Tesla's "What You Give" and pertinent "Love Song" (Love Will Find A Way)...hopefully a recurring theme. Perhaps Lambeau sound producer(s) can adopt it as mainstay airplay during games going forward.

At a soccer tournament for most of the game, tuned in the van radio for the last 8 minutes to a pleasant surprise. Seems as though Wayne & Rock have been rejuvenated by the unpredictable nature of this youth movement landscape.

"Seems as though Wayne & Rock have been rejuvenated by the unpredictable nature of this youth movement landscape."

Wayne continues to masterfully deliver the promos and commercial spots, but struggles with accurate play-by-play. Larry's grunts and groans in the background provide much welcome context, and frequent success or failure giveaways while Wayne "I-beg-your- pardon"-s his way through the action. Still, they are better (Kuhn does a nice job, too)than most any team the tee vee can offer, IMHO.

Pet Peeve avoided: Mine is bogus roughing the passer calls. So when Gary sacked Carr and forced him to leave the game, I was thankful the officials didn't invent a personal foul for "slinging the QB to the ground" or something stupid like that.

was that "roughness" really "necessary"?

Hence the "unnecessary roughness" labeled penalty.

I for one believe that much more roughness IS necessary!!! Bring the pain!

I advocate violence.

Violent disruption of the opposing backfield.

This team gets a chance to try to play a physical brand of football tomorrow. I don't know if finesse can win this one?

Have to admit I was waiting for another "nose blower" to fly! Theri were more flags in that game that when my Mother used to hang clothes on the line in the 1950s before the dryer! Bless her soul! My mother in those day was advanced she was already using solar and wind power!

Well, I finally got to see a game at Lambeau Field for the first time in over 4 years and it was spectacular. I live in California so it was a fairly long flight and stayed in Appleton at the same hotel as the Saints stayed. My wife and I rode up the elevator with two of the Saints linemen and we chatted a bit and they were very friendly. I'm just under 6'2" and 200lbs and I felt dwarfed by those guys. I wished them luck, but not enough to win. This was perhaps the most exciting game I've ever attended and the crowd went crazy at the end. I don't recall the noise level every being so loud. I had hoped to make it over to Milwaukee to say "hi" in person to Green and Gold, but I couldn't squeeze it in...perhaps in the future.

Glad you got to go! On TV the crowd sure seemed LOUD. Part of home field advantage. Both their QBs were obviously having trouble hearing their helmet.

I wonder what Joe Namath has to say about THAT, lol.

I had the same thought on the false start. Then I started thinking back to Landry's OL doing their thing, and when I watched Eagles (?) or some team the guard was looking back and doing all sorts of junk to move like looking back, then telling center to snap by hitting him.

Then on another call, the WR had a slight flinch where he only bent his trailing leg slightly which was even dumber to call.

Football game, 3 hours long and 45 minutes of actual playing.

I had recalled reading that an average NFL game consisted of just minutes of actual action. I checked several sources on the internet and the consensus appears to be 11 minutes of action. Here is one of the links: https://www.sportsrec.com/6879403/how-much-time-is-played-during-a-footb...

I'll grant you, it sure seems longer than that.

Yes—exactly. Over-officiating ruins the game.
