Cory's Corner: Aaron Rodgers Is Back — But It's Complicated

Rodgers is coming back for a 17th season, but...

So now it’s all hunky-dory in Green Bay right?

Aaron Rodgers is coming back so everything must be copacetic right?

The news that Rodgers is coming back is great. We all know what No. 12 brings to an offense with his mind, arm and legs.

But I’m starting to wonder about this now. If Davante Adams and Za’Darius Smith were having issues with the Packers’ brass, what else is going on? I mean, if there’s smoke, there’s fire right?

First of all, let’s stop comparing this to “The Last Dance.” Michael Jordan had already won five NBA titles when that documentary was filmed, which of course showcased him leading the Chicago Bulls to another championship. Rodgers has only won one Super Bowl, and his career playoff record is a less than flattering 12-9.

So the Packers, who had all the leverage in this scenario, decided to give Rodgers concessions. The final year in Rodgers’ contract will be voided, with no tags allowed. The Packers would agree to review how Rodgers feels at the end of the season. Adjustments will be made to Rodgers’ contract with no loss of income to give the Packers more cap room now. And things will be put in place to address Rodgers’ issues with the team.

“I think fans are frustrated with this situation,” said Packers president Mark Murphy on Monday.

Well, when you have a situation that started way back on April 29, just about everyone is feeling burned out on this whole thing. Mainly because nobody truly understands what the problems are because neither side has said anything about anything.

The contract reshuffling makes sense. Everyone had to figure that the final year of Rodgers’ deal in 2023 would be deleted and I do like that there is more cap room now. However, who are the Packers going to bring in at this point? Rick Wagner? Geno Atkins? Those names sound interesting but both are also in their thirties.

The one thing that stands out to me are the things that are put in place to address Rodgers’ issues with the team. What? Why don’t we address what exactly those things are first.

Let’s say Rodgers goes out and plays absolutely amazing this year. Why wouldn’t he want to come back to the place that gives him the best chance to win? And if that happens, do we see a similar gotta leave feeling from Jordan Love after this season?

There are so many things that are happening at the same time. But at the moment, be happy that Rodgers has touched down in Green Bay, so that he can throw another 48 of those this season.

There appear to be cracks in the foundation of the Packers. And it all leads to transparent communication from the upper management on down to the players. That doesn’t mean that players need to have a voice on what happens at 1265 Lombardi Ave. But it does mean that the players should know the direction of the organization. That’s a fair request and something that can easily be done.

Maybe this year the Packers can realize not just why the relationship with Rodgers was fractured, but how the organization can take steps so that this doesn’t happen again.

The Packers have an outstanding roster, have come very close to the Super Bowl recently(among 31 other teams) and had enough money to weather the pandemic.

All of the reports that I’ve read appear that both sides got what they wanted. The Packers may have gotten the better of the negotiations, but in the end, they had the ultimate leverage because of Rodger’s signed contract a couple of years ago. Nothing is simple these days including this WHOLE debacle. Glad that Training Camp is starting and let the fun begin!!

Hmmmm, well this is going to be interesting. I JUST heard about this when I woke up this morning and clicked on CHTV. At this point we still don't know a whole lot other than 2023 is voided, Rodgers has some say where he's traded if in fact he is traded after this year, and he's already requesting the services of Randall Cobb. (Surprise, Surprise).

From a winning a SB standpoint I'm excited he's back. BUT I have this feeling he's really WORKED the front office. He's gone from having 3 years remaining on a contract for a team he's supposed to not want to play for and a FO he likened to Jerry Krause which at least IMO isn't very flattering, to a voided 2023 and the Packers allowing him to see how he FEELS after this season and some say in where he can be traded.

Perhaps this is that cynical, negative side of me, but when I first saw that the FIRST thing I thought is he's gone NO MATTER WHAT after 2021...Victory Rodgers! If that is the case, then lets MAKE SURE we win the SB!

MLF, Rodgers, and the rest of the coaching staff had a chance last year to work and tweak A LOT of the offense before the 2020 season. This year that didn't happen. This year Rodgers was growing some "Man Bun", hanging out with Miles Teller in Hawaii, hosting Jeopardy, and whatever else was happening. My point is IF the Packers are going to make MORE major strides offensively to combat what DC's have had an entire offseason to learn how to slow down, the Packers are really going to have to hit the ground russ. nning to work in MORE NEW twists. IMO we've only seen a SMALL portion of what the MLF playbook looks like. Lets hope they can make the necessary tweaks in a more limited time frame.

A Beautiful Mystery indeed.

NP, it is a mystery because feelings have been hurt on both sides. Does that mean they can’t be mended? I believe they can and will through winning and time. I’m not guaranteeing it like Charles, but I think in the end Rodgers and the Packers will work out an extension when the year is over. Of course, if we’re losing that’s a different matter. As they say, winning cures all. We will see. GPG.

Rodgers pulled all this to maybe get the remains of Randall Cobb back and the very unlikely to be used last year of his deal voided. I'm worried bout his mental and emotional capacity TBH. I think he just cornered himself with absolutley no leverage and this is what the Packers offered to give him "something".

Rodgers just dumped on the fans to feed his own ego. He got nothing and Cobb may eat the money that would have let us upgrade at DL or elsewhere including injury loss. Hardly consistent with all in to win or optimizing the roster. By letting it be known, he’s likely made Cobb’s price skyrocket. To me Rodgers looks bad and illustrates why he’s not one who should have roster input (compare Brady’s moves). but I’ve seen so many already forgive everything (and overlook how this tidbit came to us through the same sources that his camp used on draft day).

If the majority view is correct the team threw him a bone while getting its original timeline back. Rodgers spent the off season playing with fans and franchise. I think that is a pretty poor testimony to the man and his attitude and perspective.

I agree, Coldworld.

Prior to the draft day bombshell, we all were on board with Aaron Rodgers leading this team, and Jordan Love working through his planned development.

After that, it became another story, with the ending yet to be written. Rodgers punked the fans for 3 solid months, maneuvering his way to what he wanted to the best of his abilities, which turned out to be ill conceived and in vain. He caved and returned under a new deal that really is beneficial to both sides, especially the Packers.

Sadly, the Packers FO took an enormous PR hit with Rodgers' words and actions. Rodgers, himself, brought on many questions of his own character - a PR hit of his own making. Winning the Super Bowl will be the only cure there, for both parties. In this continuing story, he piled immense pressure upon himself to deliver the goods.

Maybe he has had a real a change of heart. Maybe he is now truly ALL IN, willing to work under the guidance and will of his HC, Matt LaFleur. We can only hope.

Demanding Cobb shows us just the opposite. How? If i'm a star QB going back for one Last Dance, i'm pushing the team to fill the greatest holes to get there (DL), not an old guy I think can pull me out of jams when I wing it against MLF's game plan.

I have to agree. Rodgers did not come out of this as a person who cared about the fans or winning, but about being seen to be clever and instead shows how self absorbed he is. I won’t look at him the same. I will celebrate a Super Bowl just as hard but the man is diminished. I think Rodgers is the loser of the PR war he started actually, people are happy he’s going to play this year but I think he’s less beloved.

This is a very interesting subject that impacts the team as a whole. Its all about communication.

Since Ball, Gutekunst and LaFleur all report to Murphy now, the question is how much they talk to each other. If the organisation is healthy, Gutekunst should be chatting to La Fleur almost daily and at least regularly to Ball.

The current situation where they all report to Murphy is good for Murphy (keeping him in the loop), but it leaves things up in the air how the others communicate with each other.

I actually prefer the communication lines where the head coach and GM talk pretty much every day..........with the HC the one that keeps players in the loop, and the GM is (mostly) the one that keeps Murphy and Ball in the loop. It's not that the current system cannot work, just that if HC and GM don't work hard to both be on the same page, problems can arise. Same with Gute and Ball.

We know there are tensions between players and management - maybe the players are more to blame than the organisation, maybe not, we don't know the many small details of the relationship, but in any relationship where front office to player relationship (via the head coach) is breaking down to a degree, management automatically takes at least some blame for it.

Would you expect anything less then complicated when dealing with a complicated fella?

Basically we spent the last 88 daysish to be 'resolved' by voiding Rodgers last year of his deal?

I'm interested like everyone else to know what all of these concessions are. Schefter basically said that one of them was for them to void his final year and give Rodgers the ability to say what he wants to do after this year. Whether its to stay or go somewhere. Apparently that was one of the biggest things on why he decided to come back.

I still wonder if maybe him being more involved in player personnel? Not that he says who will be cut or signed, but just him having more of a voice in it? For example them asking his opinion of who he likes between EQ and Funchess. Something like that. That type of thing maybe more important to him in staying another year.

Regardless, all I know is that this gives us 1 year to figure out if Love can be the guy. It gives us a year that if Love doesn't look like will be ready, that Rodgers could potentially mend some of the issues he has had to stay longer. It gives us another chance at a Super Bowl, and after this year anything can happen. We just need a chance and we have that now.

Murphy needs to shut the hell up. The fans aren't frustrated. The FO is. AS a fan I want RESULTS. The FO didn't. This was about protecting Gute's ass. Love should not have been drafted. And Rodgers should have been traded per "his" request. But instead; the PR game, only showed it was about," the Life changing money". It said," the wheel that squeaks loudest" gets the Grease. Hell yes Rodger's had to speak up. Because Gute F**ked this team in the worst way. He showed how a team can miss their oppurtunity to be champions. That business is first. The charge card second. Ball is credited with being a cap guru. I’ve never seen any evidence of his brilliance in terms of innovation. Competent yes, but he’s long been viewed by Lambeau as far greater than I’ve been able to see evidence of. He’s almost certainly the man who led the wrecking of the roster as Murphy’s de facto TT replacement. That’s on Murphy too, but it indicates that Murphy relies on him too much. Ball was behind the bad release decisions and the bust up that lost is Cook. You may be right that he’s still an issue. Undert this structure, he may well have a great deal of influence on retention. He’s Gute’s equal and gatekeeper of all contracts and negotiations.

Eh. I get where you're coming from, Savage, but this deal appears to work immensely in the Packers' favor. Rodgers got some control of his future, and gave the team some cap relief, re-signing with the team to finish the job.

Like him personally or not, he's a competitive guy who wants to make good on this. He's in TC. Good.

All the fuckery aside, I'm glad this has worked out, and I know we're all hoping for the best. Figure, if successful this year, and we win it all, it is highly likely AR will want to return for another go in 2022. A lot can change.

I have no problem with him whatsoever. I just wish he'd have been a tad less mysterious about all of it.

He's with the Pack two more years, maybe longer. The Packers get the time they need with Rodgers to see what they have with Love, and if there's no meat on the bone with Love, they can revisit another negotiation with Rodgers. If there is, or the situation gets weird again, it's the trading block and some draft capital as boot.

I should have probably used the term ugly reconciliation instead of extortion.

In return for agreeing to honor his contract for 21, AR can force his trade in 22 and force Gutey to trade ASAP for a washed up slot receiver (Randall Cobb) who happens to be Rodgers best bud (ala Brady/Gronk).

Hey James, I don't know what all of the Cobb stuff is about, nor what might be in the works. From a pure "fan" standpoint, I'd love to see him back on a journey that seals the deal, with the Packers winning a Super Bowl, and Cobb being a part of it and getting a ring.

It would be a remarkable story. I'd say, having Cobb on board would be a dream to Amari Rodgers as well. Getting a chance to play for the SB with his mentor.

Just a 'pure fan" take, not knowing or considering the cap ramifications or his current state of health. That would indeed be a storybook ending. I love Randall Cobb.

I think Cobb would do to Amari what Graham did to Big Bob....slow his development and less productive snaps.

If Cobb wasn't out of gas, no way Houston lets him go. They just signed him for 3 years $27 million with $18 million guaranteed last year. But he only started 2 Games, played in only 10, and caught just 38 passes.

In making any deal, both sides have to receive something of value for the deal to be fair. I think this one is fair to both sides.

The Packers actually made out. Big. Ditching that last year for $11M cap relief, and AR off the books 2023 cures some financial woes. If he’s happy and wants to stay 2022, and the team is happy, that could only mean we won the 2021 SB.

AR got some control of his future back.

My hat is off to the front office for how they handled this adversity. Rodgers, on the other hand, dragged the Packers through the dirt. His MO, loud and clear, and wrong. This team took a big hit in how other players might perceive them moving forward.

Winning a Super Bowl this year will be the only cure for the Packers.

Coldworld, this is an interesting aspect in Aaron Rodgers' return to Green Bay. I'm a HUGE Milwaukee Bucks fan. I was at Game 4, and FWIW, I heard some credible sources confirm Aaron Rodgers was there, but he didn't show his face. Jason Wilde put a poll up that morning asking if Rodgers was there, would fans boo him? He uses his people.

Regardless, I do think he saw what Giannis Antentokounmpo did with the Bucks, and maybe that has inspired this change of heart. I think it did. Very similar, in that the Bucks didn't load up a superteam of stars, but added really great players, some cap friendly bargains, to handle what needed to be accomplished. They all got the job done in Milwaukee. Maybe that became a catalyst in his returning to the Packers, and working out a better deal for both sides.

You're right, that the pressure to deliver now is all on him. That changes some dynamics. We either win the whole thing, and try our best to keep the band together to do it again, or not.

Rodgers will need to take good care of his health throughout the 17 game season. Jordan Love was fast tracked for assuming the starting role this year, and that has to have helped him, should Rodgers get dinged. He'll get reps in TC/Preseason, and this should give us a better gauge on what he can bring if needed.

Rodgers gets this one shot to make good on leading this Packers team to winning it all. If successful, maybe he stays we try for another. It's the ultimate scenario all of us Packer fans have wanted.

This whole drama was a phony set-up to keep eyes on the Packers during the off-season, ending up with a miraculous new contract the day before training camp begins. I can smell the stink way over here in Minnesota. Keep that hype-train rolling! There is no bad publicity. A media hit is a media hit. Keep the doofus fans interested, right Murphy? Right Aaron?

The sky isn’t falling on the GB Packers. Just because Adams and now Smith isn’t getting what they want doesn’t mean there is a bad FO. The FO has to mange the SC. Everyone wants their slice of the pie and the pie is only so big. You cannot make everyone happy.

I believe the FO could’ve done a better job communicating with Rodgers, they made mistakes, hey, we all make mistakes it just they made them with the wrong man. One who always wants to even the score. The score is even. He embarrassed the Packers as the Packers did to him by trading up and drafting Love. I predicted Rodgers would be back with a rewritten contract and I’ll now predict the feelings will be mended and a contract extension will be signed sometime prior to the next NFL draft.

Adams seems to want to be paid like Hopkins, which is absurd money. The next highest WR contract is 5M less. Smith was signed to a very high contract when compared to his past achievements. The Packers took a risk and won. Smith is just two years into a 4 year contract and already whining. He should Shut up and play.

Everything will be fine, we just need to sit back and RELAX.

I don’t see any evidence of Smith being disgruntled, just that he wants to live on a golf course in GB, not Florida or Las Vegas. Adams has yet to do much more than be professional and negotiate. Rodgers is the one who thinks it’s cool to mess with others while playing the cool guy “embarrssed” by the attention while ensuring it continues.

Let's put it this way:

1. Packers FO saw what the percentages were for fans wanting his return. I believe throughout this entire fiasco it was a 75% for - 25% against wanting AR to come back to GB. OK, so that implies a big PR problem. They had to get the fans back.

2. Aaron Rodgers, like him or not, no matter how this situation went moving forward, will always have what we can consider a positive legacy in Green Bay. Long after he is retired from the game and gone, he will be applauded loudly in Green Bay.

3. Maybe he really does want to lead this team forward. We don't know the whole story.

4. The original plan we fans knew the day before the draft remains in place for Jordan Love's development.

5. The pressure is on Aaron Rodgers to deliver. Should anything go awry, such as an injury, Jordan Love has been fast tracked in preparation to take over the starting role to cover for him till he's able to return.

6. The pressure is off Jordan Love to jump in cold, without ever having donned the Packers uniform. The pressure is also off the staff in getting him up to speed to start.

Win the whole thing or don't. I do think Aaron may have gleaned a little something from the Bucks and Giannis. They went for it with all that they had, and some shrewd deals, trades, signings to get the ring. Did this cause a change in heart? Making Aaron "WANT to?"

You can't throw a strike if you don't grab the ball and give 'er a whirl.

The Packers team was taken for a ride in this from a PR standpoint. However, they were able to right the ship to their advantage in any number of ways.

I am not sure it was 75% for Rodgers, 25% against his return. It's more "complicated", and mostly self inflicted by 12.

At least on this board, he was under water on the "respect scale".

I think many fans, like me, wanted Rodgers to play again in GB because he is a good player on the field....but an arrogant dink off it.

I expect many became increasingly ambivalent toward him and his goofy, self centered and revenge focused antics. There seems to little forgiveness or self reflection in the man. Why do I think his mom, dad and brother would sadly nod at these words?

I respect him so much less now. Hope he plays well. But good performance playing a game does not = respect for the man.

The good news for Love, who handled the entire mess with class, is the pressure is off him now. But Rodgers is pulling 7 G's.

Actually I’ve been amazed at how most people reacted very negatively to Rodgers. The failure of his PR moves was dramatic. If he wins it all with us, this gets forgotten. If he goes down heroically and brilliantly in defeat, maybe. Otherwise I think it is quite likely that his reputation will never be as burnished after this. Yes, we want him back this season because he is good, but we like the man less and I think the team trades him as soon after the season as it can.

The Packers have had the best two QB's in the league for the past 32 seasons. And all they have to show for it is 2 Super Bowls. IMO Packer MGT has failed to provide/surround these QB's with the talent they needed to win more Super Bowls. Now Aaron wants to go to a team with the talent needed to win a Super Bowl, AKA just like Brady did with the Buc's. Father time is catching up to Aaron and I can understand his reason for wanting to go somewhere else. Packer MGT IMO has clearly failed the Packer organization.

Can we stop with this? I find this argument to be missing on a lot of factors that contributed to the Packers being unable to win another SB in the last 10 years.

Ted Thompson, one of the most highly regarded GMs and personnel men in the NFL started a years long progression into dementia. You could see there were highly uncharacteristic failings in drafts, and with personnel decisions over a years long stretch. When poor personnel choices are made, you run the risk of complete failure and collapse. Ask Brandon Bostick and Alonzo Highsmith.

Highsmith was begging Thompson not to take him, saying he will kill us. I miss Alonzo Highsmith. Too bad he's now with Seattle.

Add to that, we had Mike McCarthy in high comfort/stale mode. Everyone knew what we were running, and there was no keeping up with the times. Player development? "Lackluster" as a descriptor is being kind. Good luck winning and being dominant with both personnel and HC issues forcing a coaching change.

Brady knows the importance of DEFENSE. He made sure this TB team was stacked for their run, taking a cap friendly deal, and they won.

We'll see what occurs with a new DC, added talent, and maybe a better understanding between AR and MLF on how to move forward.

You might want to take another look at the utter destruction on the personnel side that the Packers had to recover from with the great, Ted Thompson losing the battle for his life. We were in cap hell, and devoid of talent all up and down the roster. I think Murphy, Gutekunst and LaFleur are doing remarkable jobs moving this team forward. This is a relatively cool, calm and collected group, IMO.

That doesn’t excuse Packer management in any way whatsoever.

Someone needed to lay down the law to MM. Walk into his massage room and tell him they were interviewing head coach candidates, maybe ask for his input: “Put your keys in this bag”.

And if Thompson wasn’t well enough to grab the bull by the horns, he shouldn’t have been in charge of football operations! Ultimate responsibility lay with Packer brass, i.e., Murph. For some reason, apathy or incompetence or some combination of the two, Murph was content to sit and watch Ted drool.

It does not excuse Murphy or Ball as the man running the FO in practice. Gute was much further down the hierarchy at that point, before the exodus of senior people under TT. However, This is the LaFleur show (backed by Murphy) now and the roster has improved beyond reasonable expectations since then. This is not a roster to sulk about but to win with. Fighting over yesterday’s that destroys today is the definition of self-defeat.

Now I can go back to thinking it’s time for Murphy to go. His handling of TTs last years would have ended his time in any good commercial enterprise not make him the Czar. Just wasn’t prepared to hang him for something fictitious.

So tell me...would YOU have fired MM after the 2016 season?

2017 was broken collarbone year but MM still fired Capers. Would YOU have fired MM then?

And then in 2018 it was clear MM was losing the locker room and new GM Gutey spent a lot of time with the 10 member player leadership committee, including Rodgers. MM was then fired after losing to the hapless Cardinals in sleep walking fashion on a cold December day at Lambeau.

Hind sight is perfect vision. It was time for MM to go after 2018...but the man won A LOT of games prior and saying lack of horn grabbing before 2018 was a FO failure and would have made a huge difference is not realistic in my view.

I don't think you understand how difficult it is to diagnose someone with onset dementia from afar, especially for a lay person working right next to him. That is why it took so many years to recognize. Ted deserved his respect due, and being able to discern what was actually occurring with him could not have been easy.

This has nothing to do with Murphy's competence. Medical Doctors? Yes. Murphy? No.

Ball was effectively running the FO for three years and Murphy was fine with that. Of course they knew. It’s unfortunately not hard to see the signs when in close contact, but here actions showed that they knew and had adapted. Murphy only acted when the roster and performance as well as internal strife with MM came to a head. Up until then, Ball was de facto GM and planned to be named as such. Sorry GG, but they knew, Murphy had a plan in action that blew up in his face and wasted probably 5 to 7 years of Rodgers’ prime. That is inexcusable.

I had no idea about that, Coldworld. Thanks for the heads up! Changes some things for me. Regardless, Brian Gutekunst had one hell of a mess to clean up. I respect the work he and his staff have done since.

Murphy? I don't know about. I think he may be a good steward, not the best by any means. Problem is as a former player, he wants to keep his hands in it, and he should be more one the outside.

Bob Harlan was the epic model for the position.

You mean like Denver? LOL!

Denver was 5-11 last year with the 25th ranked D in the NFL. How would Rodgers plan to win with that bunch? Brady went to a team loaded with top of round drafted talent for the prior several years...all they were missing was a trigger man.

Denver is weak on the talent side. Elway, since Manning, has been way over-rated. One trick pony who again wanted to get another end of career HOF QB. It worked with Manning who walked into a solid Defense. Rodgers would not have.

"So the Packers, who had all the leverage in this scenario, decided to give Rodgers concessions."

Apparently, the FO didn't have all the leverage, as many either suggested, assumed, and outright believed.

When you have it, you don't bend the knee and agree to concessions, you force the opponent to do what they threatened because you are in strong support of what you have to counter that threat. Rodgers used to his advantage the FO weakness, the possible SB that is assured to not be without him.

Many here claimed they didn't care and wanted Rodgers gone, and allowed their 'blind optimism' to dictate their thinking, again. Even with Love getting another season to grow, the SB will be out of reach if he starts next season, and you all know it to be true, though will deny it as usual.

Rodgers next year will move on to the best team that needs a QB and the Packers will be hoping that Love doesn't fail more than believing he'll succeed, as his contract comes up with so little of actual play to decide, either 2023 if Rodgers leaves or 2024 if Rodgers stays for 2023, Loves' 4th year and his first as the starter, yikes. The wrong decision could guarantee GB will be one of the bottom dwellers in the Division, and Rodgers surely will be in a better place, even if he only wins his new Division, because Division wins is success in GB, right?

Rodgers won this deal like he knew he would, by getting what he wanted all along. Did it suck that this all had to happen, yes, but at least you got what you all claim you wanted, another shot at an SB, which was walking out the door with Rodgers had the FO not conceded their 'leverage'?

Rodgers looks to have got nothing, except maybe a friend, while the team got him committed and can trade him at the optimum time. I would think that Murphy was jumping for joy. One more shot with the roster they’ve put together, another year for Love, the cap flexibility they sought and the ability to trade him next spring and a fan base that now expects it and sees that as Rodgers driven. I’d say the Packers brass is laughing if the stated details are confirmed. Rodgers got nothing they wanted and a big dent in his reputation.

He loses no money, and you contend he got nothing. He, if rumored true, now dictates that the FO bring back a player long gone, and who knows what else, and you contend he got nothing. SMH.

Rodgers has two years left...this year and next. Only 2023 was voided and it actually HELPS the Packers Cap.

Packers have said they want Rodgers under center THIS year and "hopefully" beyond. They said they were not trading him this year. Matt, Gutey and Murphy said Rodgers was their QB for 2021.

Mission accomplished and all they had to give was a 2023 void year with a very low cap hit on deal Rodgers signed with grins and giggles in 2018.

The FO had ALL the leverage as to whether Rodgers played NFL football in 2021.

You, or I, don't have ANY information beyond a reported void year, about who lost or won what, except for a few nuggets to date.

As far as you, or I know, based on what has been reported, is the Packers wanted Rodgers back for 2021 and vowed not to trade him. Check two boxes for the FO.

Rodgers apparently told teammates he would never play for the Pack again and demanded a trade. Erase two boxes for him.

And we will have to see....but if the revised deal gives the FO more cap room to sign top talent....check another box for them.

I do not see what Rodgers won beyond 4 months of horrible PR and bad mouthing the team that has paid him just under a $Quarter Billion.....and ending in the same spot he was on draft day.

Meanwhile the Packers got what they wanted all along...their MVP QB back for 2021 and it seems more cap room.

I agree that we still don't know what to make of all this, except a cautious optimism that it all works to the good.
It may be acceptable to move forward without knowing what has had Aaron Rodgers so disruptively unhappy, but still unsettling. As of yet, there still doesn't seem to be any noble principle that he is fighting for with heroic perseverance on behalf of all the working people of America.
No inspiring Woody Guthrie-type songs are likely to be forthcoming portraying Rodgers as the devoted friend of the downtrodden average American suffering from COVID isolation and desolation, even as a new round of restrictions is creeping around the corner.
***
Even so, this could be a very good thing. We'll have to see how it plays out.
I don't mind the front office giving Rodgers some concessions to save face to some extent from what appears to be a self-absorbed indulgence of coddling his own complex sensitivities.
It seems the front office has done little to nothing wrong with regard to Rodgers, but it is wise and gracious for it to say it could do better. We all could do better.
My hope is that Rodgers handles this unexpected opportunity in a way that rallies the whole organization of the Packers, especially his teammates. to a renewed surge to the Super Bowl.
In my opinion, Rodgers would also do well to show some appreciation for the fans who are still perplexed but perhaps ready to be appeased. We don't have to know all the inner details of the last few months of confusing suspensefulness, but it would be nice to hear with some sincerity that we are considered of some importance, and regarded with some affection.
***
I'm still not so sure about this whole thing, though, not giddily celebrating the return of Rodgers as of yet.
I can forgive someone of his stature apparently getting carried away with himself, even at the expense of teammates and fans. Just about all of us get carried away with ourselves at times.
What would be a major concern, which is likely to break the season at some point, is if Rodgers really isn't remorseful at all about his moodiness.
It would be a shame if Rodgers thinks he has won some kind of great victory for his supposedly honorable efforts, and that he should be welcomed back as a sort of hero for defying management and deigning to come back to the Packers at all.
A sneakily superior Rodgers who feels as though he is vindicated by his petty petulance could spread this cancerous attitude to his teammates in a way that sickens the Packers for years to come.
I earnestly hope it's otherwise.
***
It may be that the Rodgers reporting to Green Bay to fulfill his contract -- albeit one with alterations -- is a humbler and wiser and kinder person who is grateful that he can return without all that much ado.
He'll mostly keep quiet, but also say positive things to others all around. He won't be cryptically commenting on matters pertaining to management or coaching, but only about how glad he is to be back with his teammates to make a great run this season for the fans.
I'm not expecting a dramatic transformation of Rodgers, but a subltly significant degree of personal growth.
If in general he's still the same stubborn enigma from the past (that he appears to have been), he will be a poison leaking a contamination of discontent into the Packers culture; if he's undergone a change of heart -- truly relieved that his folly may not have caused all that much damage -- then great things for him and the Packers could be in the offing.
The same old resistant Rodgers would mean trouble that undermines the Packers; a grateful and amiable and collaborative Rodgers would make for a fantastic finale.

If Rodgers can stay healthy, this will be his and Adams' final dance. I look forward to watching Rodgers perform his magic in the green & gold one last time.

The FO didn't blink. They worked out an amazing deal to help the team, while bringing back the reigning MVP.

Yeah, maybe we see the dream become a reality this year. If so, then it's possible we can try for another. This is a sweet deal for both sides.

Where you see FO blinks, I see huge grins.

I think Shakespeare nailed it:

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

All these months of speculation, all these pundits deciding what the fan base wanted, and making wrong predictions. To what end? All this sturm und drang just to get Rodgers contract slightly adjusted so there is some more cap room this year, and he can decide whether to stay with the Packers after this season? Seriously? If I don't hear anything more about Rodgers and this ongoing fiasco for the rest of the year, good. But wait until Gutekunst is on the field as the same time as Rodgers. Let the analysis go wild! Was there eye contact? What was the body language? Did he say something to a teammate and they laughed? What did that mean? Get the teammate to share Rodgers' comment, ASAP! Or, we can simply move on, see if AR can develop some chemistry with Amari Rodgers and continue to grow a connection with receivers not named Adams, and watch to see what the Packers do with the extra cap space they got from the new QB contract? Meanwhile, how about a few kind thoughts sent the way of Jordan Love, who definitely didn't ask for this situation, but seems to be handling things similarly to how Rodgers handled the Favre controversy- keep quiet and do your job. That, more than anything, makes me admire Love for showing GUP (Grace Under Pressure).

Always cool seeing Shakespeare intertwined within CHTV comments. I have to add one detail to Ricky's note, adding:

"It is a tale Told by an idiot named Adam Schefter, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."

Rodgers is a complete dick. But guess what Bears, Vikings, and Lions, he’s our dick. So, for at least one more year, our dick will have your dicks once again just swinging in the wind.

So all the last 4 months was Rodgers saying "you better give me a void year in 2023 or I'm outta here, dangnabbit!"

Wow. Those void years are hard to give up!

I think I will get on board with the team once the season starts, but right now it feels like the Green Bay Packers have become the Green Bay Aaron Rodgerses, at least for this season. I hope the front office did not give him any big concessions, but it's a bad sign that he wants Randall Cobb back. Although Rodgers gives the team the best chance at winning a championship this season, I would have rather not had him back after he pulled this stunt.

No one should be surprised at the outcome. Rodgers had little to no leverage given his last contract. This was always going to be the outcome outside of Rodgers doing a Brady deal. And we all know Rodgers was NOT going to do that. If there is one big winner in all this angst strewn drama, it's Brian Gutekunst. The Executive Committee handed him the power and responsibility to clean up their and Mark Murphy's mess. Clearing Rodger's contract was a big part of that. We now know who the Man in Green Bay is, it's Gutekunst. At this point Murphy maybe a figurehead, speaking for the Executive Committee. How much real power he has on the football side is very, very, very little, if any at all. What is really sad about Rodger's behavior, is all he and his people had to do is sit down with Gutekunst and work out his exit. It was in both parties interests to do a clean exit. Don't think for a second that his diva act did not hurt his standing both as a player and person throughout the league. As for this season, we'll just have to see how it plays out...

Wait a minute. Doesn't Murphy have the power to fire Gutekunst? And what was the "mess" that Murphy and the executive committee created?

It's a long story. The Executive Committee (Owner) let Murphy have his shot at being GM with Russ Ball acting as his wingman. The Murphy faction had a majority on the so-called Board of Directors which handled day to day oversite of 1265. At some point this group either got pushed out, or turned on Murphy over his handling of the football side of the operation. Enter Bob Harlan who somehow managed to get the hiring of Brian Gutekunst before the entire Executive Committee over the objections of both the 'Murphy faction' and Murphy himself. How Gutekunst was hired is on the public record, and is one of the more insane moments in this long franchise history. After the midnight fighting of Mike McCarthy, the Executive Committee took away Murphy's ability to do 'oversite' in a series of public announcements with the final one in early 2019 with him Murphy stepping away from football operations. At some point, Gutekunst started reporting directly to the day to day committee on football operations, and Russ Ball started reporting to Gutekunst on Cap and Salary. By doing so, the Executive Committee restored the old structure that the organization had been operating under since 1991. Right now, it's unclear if Murphy has any oversite of the Football side of the house, much less the ability to fire Gutekunst. With the end of his contract in site, he is very much either a figurehead, or lame duck, take your pick. "The Mess" is twofold. Murphy's massive mishandling of pro football operations from late 2016-2018. Murphy acting as the Executive Committee's agent in the Aaron Rodgers contract. There is no question the contract crippled the team's ability in dealing with the Cap early on. Gutekunst ability in managing with the limited Cap space he inherited in rebuilding the roster, and setting up the transition to the next generation of players is a hallmark of what being a GM is. Dealing with both allowed the Packers to dodge a massive Cap hit, and the destruction of the roster that would have followed. That is the work of Brian Gutekunst and his team in the front office. Glad the Packers have him.

Rogers is not a great Post season player. Rogers is not a great team player. Rogers is a great Rogers player. Watch and listen to any of his interviews; he is fascinated by himself and can talk about himself almost endlessly. When Ted Thompson was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame he managed to turn it into his triumph . It was because of me that he's there. The W.R.'s that all stayed away earlier this year. Which one is he sacking for Randall Cobb? He's poison.
