Cory's Corner: Be Reasonable With Week 1 Expectations
It's not worth risking a season-ending injury in Week 1. Now if it was January, the thinking would probably be different.

Now we can all come back to Earth.
Micah Parsons is a Packer. He chose to wear No. 1 — the last time that number has been worn was in 1926 by team founder Curly Lambeau.
But even though Parsons is one of the best pass rushers on the planet, how much will he be able to play in the season opener on Sunday? He has barely practiced during training camp and he is also dealing with a L4/L5 facet joint sprain in his back.
The reason why it matters is because the Lions come to town on Sunday. It’s not a situation of Green Bay wanting to show off their new toy. I would say it’s more the Packers really need the three-time All Pro to send a message to Detroit. The Lions went 15-2 last year and finished 2024 ranked No. 1 in points.
The Lions are also going for their third straight NFC North title. I don’t know a better way to reverse that trend than by making Jared Goff rack up 10,000 steps just in scrambling alone.
But then again, is it worth it to send out a guy that hasn’t practiced much and who is also dealing with a pesky back injury?
I know that Parsons has been cleared but this is also Week 1. If anything, Parsons should be kept on a pitch count and held to a certain number of snaps.
Obviously, this would upset a lot of people. The grumbling would go like this, “The Packers are paying Parsons $47 million and he isn’t playing Week 1?” I get it, but you also have to remember that it’s a long season. The Packers aren’t going to win the division in Week 1, but watching Parsons go down with a season-ending injury in Week 1 sure wouldn’t help things.
I am keeping my expectations low for Parsons’ playing time. I will echo that for Jayden Reed as well. Reed is dealing with a Jones fracture in his left foot. Even though he opted to not have surgery, he will need time to make sure that his foot can be weight bearing. In addition to the cutting and moving, he will need to test his foot to make sure that he can absorb a hit.
Obviously, my thinking would probably be different if it was January, but this is the first game of the year. With Jordan Love still getting nursed back to health with his injured left thumb, the Packers are going to go through a myriad of growing pains.
It’s OK to be jacked up for the season. Everybody has huge expectations for this team.
Just remember that those expectations cannot be fulfilled with notable stars stuck in the trainer’s room.

Oh how fast the excuses start. Gute gave up two first round picks, a very good DT, and put us in a salary cap situation that we finally got out of. Parsons better be playing 80% of the defensive snaps. This is one of the biggest games of the season. These are the Lions, last years division champs. He better be ready to play and play. If his back was an issue which it is then they should not have made this deal.
I had the Packers at 8 wins before the trade. I added two wins after the trade. They will squeak into the playoffs.
In two years Parsons will not be happy and want more money and Gute will be fired because we did not reap the benefits of a big trade.

Then what is your issue. If I cannot disagree and voice my opinion then how can people that agree with it voice theirs. Its called free speech. I have every right to voice my displeasure as a fan.
I have been a supporter of Gute eventhough I have disagreed with many of his decisions. I even supported him after not trading AR a year earlier after I decided that he was doing what MM wanted.
You are right my voice means nothing other than I can put comments here. One of the reasons I like this forum over others is I can speak my mind instead of someone picking and choosing which of my comments make it.

"Free Speech" only legally applies when the government is trying to suppress peoples' opinions and essays; it does not apply to private businesses or to discussions between individuals or groups. The fact (and it's a very important one) that this forum does not over-mod the comments is why I, also, like reading and occasionally posting here, but that has absolutely nothing to do with "free speech".
Cheezehead72
September 02, 2025 at 08:54 am

The point is that people should not down play a person's opinion just because it has no bearing on the situation.

that's exactly what's supposed to happen, say stupid shit, win stupid prizes. While it's true that anyone can have an opinion, it does not imply that your opinion has value. I understand.
I have a different view than you on the Parson's acquisition today than I did when the hype began to weeks ago from many fans to "get him, no matter the cost". Back then the "experts" were forecasting the cost for Parsons would be 2 firsts, 2 seconds, a mid rounder and a starter.
Gutey took advantage of of Jerry's emotion and impetuousness and negotiated decent deal, costly but doable (see Carter Semb's article).
Time will tell the tale.
SicSemperTyrannis
September 02, 2025 at 11:14 am
This open dialogue should demonstrate to you the folly of having said "#1 better play 80% of the defensive snaps in week 1."
I have no idea how much he might play or if he'll play at all. Losing the game without him playing but him being 100% for as much of the season (and post-season) as possible is the better option if it comes to that, as compared to trying to declare him a full go and coming up more seriously injured, whatever that might look like. If it means playing week 1 without him or Kenny Clark? Obviously that wouldn't be ideal but it wouldn't begin to make the trade a bust, it just means Hafley has to figure out what to do without KC - he has to do that anyway.
What's much more important is getting the whole team to "show up" from the very first snap in week 1, something that's been a real weakness for at least a few seasons.
nagawicka
September 05, 2025 at 12:58 am
You can say what you want. However.
When not a single snap's been played, there is zero value in condemning the team, coach, or staff when you have NO RESULTS to complain about. Stomping around like you're in charge is just asinine. You're not, my guy. All this 'Gute had better this' and 'LaFleur is a softie loser' AND ESPECIALLY 'The Packers OWE ME a season of easy & overwhelming wins that aren't even close' -- it just exposes an unpretty self-indulgence that actively fails to remember that NFL football isn't there to cooperate with your personal preferences.
Meaning that every year there are 31 teams in the NFL that DO NOT win the Super Bowl, all of them consist of very large men, many of them angry & motivated, all of whom are paid very very well to make sure the Packers WILL NOT win it all. It's not realistic to think the Packers 'had better' win, or do as they're told.
Hey, I get it. It's hard. It must be frustrating that we have no basis to weigh in on the results. We have no results. But we do have a basis for speaking to the posts & comments we find here. So if you can spout off the rails, it's reasonable that anyone can say, 'Hey, the season hasn't started. WHEN IT DOES, it'd be great if you could take a deep breath & enjoy all the competitive great close games, win or lose. What else is there? Not poisoning the experience by letting in the folks incapable of enjoying the game itself and stopping right there.

If parsons- who hasn't been in any training camp activities until after he was traded- isn't physically ready to play football, the Packers shouldn't even dress him.
This isn't a one year deal. Make sure he's ready and then put him on the field. We've got him for multiple years, don't risk damaging the young man just because he's expensive.
DoubleJ

"Parsons better be playing 80% of the defensive snaps"
It makes no sense to have him play that many snaps in week 1. He will have had less than 10 days to even learn the playbook and he hasn't practiced all training camp so he isn't in game shape. Those things are going to take time to fix. By mid season he will probably be paying that many snaps. I could see that at mid season when in base he is a standup LB to keep him on the field and avoid some of the extra beating from the OL.
SicSemperTyrannis
September 02, 2025 at 11:18 am
We don't know if anyone will ever play that many snaps in this scheme. There's something to be said for "fresh legs." Our other pass rushers didn't forget how to play when they signed #1.
It will be interesting to see how this unfolds ...

September 02, 2025 at 11:19 am
Ideally, you'd want your starting DE on the field for 60% of the snaps, but not more than 75%. I mean, this is a tough job where you have to outfight guys that are way over 300 lbs. You've got to rest some time.
Considering the backups at DE will be guys like Van Ness and Enagbare, two solid vets, I'd say the Packers would probably aim for a 60/40 split, which if we ran 64 plays would translate down to around 40 snaps for the starter.
Of course, in the playoffs, you play the starter as much as you can.

Excuse is not the word. It’s just being smart. Number one hasn’t practiced in training camp due to holding out for a new deal. It’s stupidity not to recognize that and slowly ramp up his snaps.
What would you do? Not trade for one of the best pass rushers in the game and continue to have good but not great teams. Who cares about having a healthy salary cap if you’re one and done in the playoffs every year? That’s exactly what fans of the Green Bay team are complaining about. Since it’s title town, they want the team to contend for an actual trophy. Gutey made a move to contend come postseason.
Again, it would be stupidity to overuse a player who is not acclimated to the game through training, camp and end up with an injury that knocks out your new best player for weeks.

September 02, 2025 at 07:12 am
I would expect Parsons to play on obvious passing downs and not much more. His back doesn't need the strain of standing up 300 pound tackles until that injury heals. And it is hard to pick up the nuances of a different defense in one week. Give him a little time.
A more interesting question for me is how much does he play edge and how much does he play linebacker? Parsons can do both and given the Packers depth at DE and McDuffie being the third LB, I think we might see Parsons as the third LB in a 4-3 set.

September 02, 2025 at 07:29 am
Pitch count, situational, whatever, he's not ready to start the season at 100% participation. The Packers aren't dumb, and they won't be with Reed either. If it comes down to their participation to ensure a victory, we're not close enough in talent as I think.
No excuse for game results. This is a division game, and we need to turn our division record around from last season. 6 and 0 is not a bad goal to shoot for. Then throw in some playoff victories just to put exclamation marks on it.
porupack
September 02, 2025 at 07:52 am
There are some Reggie Whites where the talent transfers and elevates the new team. But more often, the star was made to a big extent by the system and situation, and that does not significantly elevate the new team. Khalil Mack was supposed to be the "generational talent", so how did that work for the Bears? I am not optimistic about Parsons being the "generational talent" missing piece on the 2025/26 superbowl aspirations. It sort of sets the back end of the "window of opportunity" to lose 2 future first rounders. So, the next 3 years better yield some gold hardware.

Mack was absolutely a game changer for the Bears defense and he vastly improved their defense during his time there. But they had a bad QB (Trubisky) and poor coaching so they wasted his time in CHI.
Green Bay has a good QB and good coaching and a pretty deep roster even before this signing. So it’s not a fair comparison. I mean the comparison in terms of productivity is Reggie and that worked out pretty well for GB.
Parsons’ success in Dallas wasn’t based on the system or the guys around him. It’s him. Winning one-on-ones and double teams and getting to the QB for a hurry, hit or sack.

Parsons is not completely game ready and he needs to last 17 games. He will play some reps but should not play the entire game against a team like the Lions, who will be gunning for him. I live in the Bay Area and all offseason we were saturated with news of Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk's contract demands. Neither of them were game-ready when the contract fiasco was finally settled at the beginning of the season-neither had seen the field since the previous season, returned too quickly and both ended up injured for lengthy periods.
This game is more about MLF's preparation and in-game decisions. Also, the OL needs to hold up-
Love is also not 100%-ligament surgery does not render a ligament healed in 3.5 weeks. If he plays, he could re-injure. These guys will do what it takes, for the team, to win. Jordan Love was acting heroically when he got injured in Brazil. The coaches and MDs understand that warrior mentality and understand the players will put their bodies at risk most of the time. So, they need to step in and decide whether a player should be on the field knowing that mentality.
A brace will not protect him from a hit. He will also not be able to grip the ball as well.

I’m not a doctor familiar with his actual medical prognosis. Therefore I have no clue how healthy he is or of the potential for aggravation.
Even if he is essentially full healthy, he’s not actually practiced all summer and there is a difference between fit to practice and ready to play. Moreover, he’s new to the system, albeit at a position where that can be overcome somewhat, but that is done by limiting usage at first
All in all, I’d not play him at all (though I’d dress him to mess with opponents) if I thought that he needs a couple of weeks to get fully healthy. If this team need him to win when not fully healthy, then we probably don’t have an adequate platform for him to make enough difference when he is.
Assuming his back is genuinely minor, some limited snaps if he’s close to full health, especially if we can get ahead (so increasing the likelihood of passing) and perhaps some decoy use where he doesn’t rush. LaFleur’s offensive efficiency may have a lot to do with how busy he is initially. If they are just pounding us back on the ground in the middle, then not so much too. I suspect we find out early if Wooden is really viable as a run stopping NT against Detroit, as much recent hype claims.

I assume Parsons will be on a pitch count. Not a full load as he has very limited practice time.
Now I did see some practice video where Parsons drilled and lifted the practice sled 3 feet off the ground. So whatever his “back issue” this is not something you see someone even attempt if they are truly hurting. Don’t listen to people on the internet especially from those who would love to see this fail. Lots of “copium” floating around.

My understanding is that Parsons has been dealing with the "back issue" for almost a month now. What is the prognosis from the doctors? I could care less about opinions from non medical personnel. Wow. It doesn't take much to start a stampede here.
Most likely scenario: Parsons plays, the Packer play well and win this game at home. The OL simply pushes Detroit out of the way and the RBs take care of the rest. Detroit plays well, but ultimately makes too many mistakes to survive. Packers go 1-0
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
Detroit, previously, ran numerous plays where the ball is out of Goff's hand before any pass rush could reach him. Parsons will help, but stopping that is a team effort. This is a league where 70% of passes get completed.
Hopefully, you have a secondary that can keep people covered for more than two seconds. If you do, then the pressure has a chance. You have 4 guys, and 3 of them will be in one on one situations. About 1/3 of the time, you'll send five or six rushers, but it still comes down to winning one on one battles.
Of course, you double team Parsons, so it's the other 3 guys who have to apply the pressure. That's likely to be Wyatt, Gary, and probably Brooks.

"Wow. It doesn't take much to start a stampede here."
Is it a stampede if it's only 3 cows, but they run in circles a lot?
"Detroit, previously, ran numerous plays where the ball is out of Goff's hand before any pass rush could reach him."
That requires WR to win at the LOS and get good releases. The Packers seem to be a team going more toward zone...they'll need to squat on some of those passing lanes--enough to make Goff pump and think.
I agree that Parsons will be on a pitch count. These guys are well-trained athletes and in tremendous shape, but they don't train with guys beating on them very much. If they go past 15-20 snaps out of Parsons, I'll be surprised...but every time he steps on the field, he changes what the offense does, even if he's a "decoy".

the internet in a nutshell, three cows running in a circle. the three cows here are pretty predictable, regardless of the identity they're posting under.

how about MLF gets the offense to produce early and often so Parsons can ease his way in ?

Let the focus be on Parsons, Cooper will be their worst nightmare. Just my gut!

That's right TB, exactly what I was thinking. Parsons could very well be a decoy most of this game and Cooper tears Goffs ass up!

Regarding Parsons, it's not uncommon for NFL pass rushers to play through back issues, but the severity and specific type of injury are critical factors. The position itself puts immense strain on a player's back. The explosive movements, torquing of the spine to generate power, and repeated impacts with offensive linemen make back injuries a frequent problem.
Micah Parsons' situation, a facet joint sprain in his L4/L5 vertebrae, is a real concern. Here's some info:
It's a recognized and confirmed/legit injury: Parsons' back issue has been confirmed by both the Dallas Cowboys and a well-known orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. Robert Watkins. This suggests it's not just a minor issue or a tactic in contract negotiations. Parsons is managing the tightness with PT and medication, including a course of prednisone.
While the injury is concerning and not to be ignored, it seems manageable and (since he seems to receive epidural injections) to play through the pain.
This injury is not unique to Parsons. Other players, including pass rushers, have dealt with similar back issues. For example, former 49ers pass rusher Dee Ford has spoken openly about his struggles with chronic back problems, which he managed with a carefully planned snap count.
An L4/L5 facet joint sprain can be painful and limit a player's explosive movements, but with the right medical care and pain management, Parsons can still perform at a high level, albeit potentially on a "pitch count" or with a limited workload (i.e. 'use him wisely'.) This plays well for GB who has a number of talented DE rushers -- it will allow all of them to be fresh throughout games and strong in the 4th Q -- a recent GB problem on defense.
Parsons passed his physical. So, the medical staff believes the injury is manageable and not a long-term career-threatening problem. However, as with any back injury, it's something that will require constant monitoring and can be a recurring issue for a player in a physically demanding role.
I also gather Parsons has 'fire' and really pushes himself. I take this as a positive -- meaning he's not an 'I stubbed my toe, I'll be out a month' kind of guy...but moreso wanting to be out there and push the medical staff to do so. I'd rather have a guy wanting to play through issues and working hard to manage (chronic pain) than the overly-cautious 'soft' dude. I think Vince woulda kinda liked 11 of this type of guy on D.
Pass rushers, particularly those who are highly-paid and expected to be on the field, generally express a desire to play through facet joint sprains, viewing them as a manageable, albeit painful, part of the job. Their comments often reflect a high pain tolerance and a commitment to their team, even with a known injury.

Very informative. My take is the more we play Parsons the less number of plays our defense will be on the field. The goal should be to keep Detroit punting on every forth down. Ideally a three and out every series.
Bottom line: he has been cleared medically so have the kahunas to take advantage of what is likely the best defensive player in the game. There will only be one home game with Detroit. It is Sunday. If we want to win the division this is a no brainer. Unleash Parsons!
