Cory's Corner: Don't Forget About Josiah Deguara

The 3rd round pick is poised play an important role on the versatility team.

Much has been written about the usual suspects on offense for the Packers.

You’ve got Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, Robert Tonyan, Allen Lazard and even Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Just don’t forget about Josiah Deguara. You’re probably like, “Who? Didn’t he tear his ACL?” He did in fact tear his left ACL in a Week 4 win against the Falcons.

But go back to what the mantra of general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur is — versatility. Basically, what else can you do? There’s a reason the Packers took him in the third round out of Cincinnati. They could use him as an H-back, a blocking tight end, a pass catcher and maybe even as a deceptive short yardage running back.

I questioned the pick last year, but Deguara is the perfect guy for what LaFleur wants to do. He wants a play-action heavy scheme and in order to do that, he needs plenty of beef that can do a plethora of things.

The reason I like Deguara is because he doesn’t mind what role he plays, he just wants to play. And the other players see that too. They know that Deguara can catch passes but they also see that he’s willing to sacrifice his body to block just to make sure the Packers get a first down on 3rd and 1.

That stuff is contagious. I know that sounds corny, but other guys see that and then instantly want to see what else they can do. And to make matters even better, Deguara is a talented player by his own right.

Don’t be surprised if Deguara is ready to go for training camp on July 28. That may seem a little soon, but what he has already done in such a short time, that’s just another goal for him to reach. Remember, he’s been lifting weights and rehabbing for quite awhile now, so he should be in great shape.

That’s fine to think of Adams, Jones and Tonyan. Those guys will put up huge numbers this season. But just because Deguara may not have the numbers doesn’t mean he won’t be impactful.

Remember, you can say a lot without saying a word.

First I think they knew exactly what they wanted to do with him. As a player, and the type of guy he was, as a coach you love that guy, you wanted that guy to be successful.

Unfortunately, there are some simple truths in the NFL. I can't remember any player who's ever come back from an ACL, a better player or a better athlete, or with improved speed. This kid wasn't real fast prior to the injury, I can't see him coming back stronger and faster than ever from an ACL. Was and unfortunate injury for him. We can hope. he definitely showed a glimpse of game..

It happens. I'm not say Jordy was faster after coming back from his ACL, but there wasn't much decline either. He had 97/rec for 1257 yds and 14 TDs, which was one more than the year before his ACL and only one less than his career high of 15.

This kid is young, so I think there is a decent chance he'll bounce back ok if he's not rushed back too soon. We'll see...let's hope for the best.

Athletes come back from ACL's all the time now across many sports. It's not the nail in the coffin it once was.

An ACL injury is so common now that rehab is pretty cut and dried. 9 months is the norm for a player of Deguara's size. Bigger OL and DL more like a year and older players (Jordy) a year as well. An ACL really has very little impact on the player after he is fully recovered especially if its early in his career. However, fully recovered isn't just a return to playing games. It usually take another 6 months or so to get fully back to what he was prior due to lost conditioning and other factors.

As for a player coming back from it stronger. You need look no further than Adrian Peterson who returned to rush for 2000 yds and win the MVP the next year after he tore his ACL and MCL in a late season game.

Now days an Achilles injury is worse than an ACL.

No offense - But I never liked the pick of DeGuara. Give me a WR any Day. And after taking Amari Rodgers this year. What a screw -up. But lets get back to why they took him. WE did have big Bob and Big Jace. And I really think they were better then Graham. So what goes? How many TEs or special scheme players did we need? And really how did DeGuara make a difference last Year? He didn't. And he probably won't. Gutey blew the picks when you consider the other positions ignored. And the main argument was, Deguara would make the offense go. Packer fans need to get this straight. The Argument of that Draft for 2 years. Was you get Rodgers weapons. Not LeFluer. Not to mention; Getting Pettine what has been ignored. And now you can see why Rodgers has had enough. He isn't the reason for anything anymore. The show will go on. But what a flop, when you add up the mistakes.

Stockholder; You really don't know anything about football. News flash- Deguara tore his ACL in the 4th game against Atlanta, so I guess he didn't make a difference on crutches. He showed he can be a good blocker and fits LaFleurs schemes. He played 24 snaps in his first NFL game. You need more than 1 TE, and Deguara can also run. Amari Rodgers is a screw up? Great that you have a crystal ball. Rodgers had the #1 offense last year with two all pros on the line, top WR, top RB, very good TE. The flop was the Packer players in the NFCCG. Rodgers, Jones,King, and Adams did not have their best game, and lost. Gute brought in the players to go 13-3 two years in a row with a rookie coach. My advice for you is: take two weeks off from this site. and quit. Go follow another team.

As always you missed the point. So why respond ? Amari Rodgers wasn't a screw up--.( It was they should have taken a WR sooner.) Before DeGuara! I got the scheme fit. It was also the holes before, and the ignoring of them. Got that! You can put your advice where the sun doesn't shine.

Never heard anyone say Deguara will make this offence go defore you said it in this post.
Maybe theBest O line in football last year.
One of the best running backs, two very good backups ar rb.
Best receiver in football.
A very good TE.
Pretty decent WR group, Rodgers rarely had no open receiver.
Rodgers has plenty of weapons, he just can’t get it done.
Who, what player available at the packs pick would’ve beat Tampa?
Just ignore the rest of the team, get Rodgers more weapons.
Which player in the last two or three drafts would’ve played better than MVS in the NFCCG? What weapon available to the pack would’ve replaced The injured left tackle?
How may more regular season wins would’ve got them to the super bowl? They did have home field advantage right?
This get Rodgers more weapons line is getting pretty old.
Every QB in the leage wants more weapons.
Gute has built a very good, balanced team.
Rodgers is a me first asshole hole who is holding the organization and the fans hostage because his feelings are hurt.
You are a hater. You can’t see that every team that pays a QB big money has roster holes. You can’t see that every team misses on draft picks. You can’t see that a huge part of GBs offense side of the salary cap tore his ACL a week before the Championship game.
You seem to be missing the one factory that’s consistent to all of the NFC championship game losses for the Pack in the last 15 years, that’s the QB- Rodgers.
If we can just get him enough weapons!

No - The one thing that has been consistent is No Defense! ( And the changes at DC.). Defense wins championships! Also what draft guru didn't think Gute should have drafted a WR first! If we had the right men in the FO. Rodgers would have won his second ring and more!

So I’ll ask again, which player was available that would’ve won the tampa game? Which WR rookie would’ve played better than MVS in that game?
Maybe if they drafted a left tackle that could’ve started ahead of Billy Turner? Is that one of the weapons you’re talking about?
Which rookie was available at GB pick that would’ve gotten AR his second ring?

Yes he did. And Z Preston and Amos are pretty damn good players too! But you ignore them. And Gutey also drafted some damn good players a few on whom are about to blossom into game changing players! Jenkins, Gary, Savage, Alexander are all better than any draft picks Wolf ever made. His draft record wasn't that great either, particularly in Rd 1.

And in the early yrs of FA alot of great players became FA. That is not the case anymore! The last time a Reggie White hit FA was Reggie White. Hell even the last time a Charles Woodson hit FA was Charles Woodson! That just doesn't happen in the today's NFL where teams keep great players and never let them get to FA. Just like the Packers!

Gutey is very much following the Ron Wolf path. Your just too damn old and blind to see it!

I'm not ignoring what he did. It's what he didn't do. Alexander and Jenkins are the only ones I will give you at this time. Gary, is not a full time starter. And the others that Gary was compared with, are starters with better stats. Savage has not reached his draft hype. In fact, I believe they move him to Amos' position soon. Wolf went after veterans. And don't forget who was on his draft team. You remember Winters, Chumara, Brooks, Simmons. Etc. In fact Simmons was his biggest "Trade" mistake. But= The bottom line is; if they wish to go to the super-bowl. They need more money and better Defense. Gutey hasn't found a way to do that yet without screwing over some fan favorites. Rodgers is next. You won't bring in the veterans unless you have a good QB. And that is the only reason the Pack CAME BACK.

What I really like about MLF is his pick-your-poison offense. Getting stifled at just the wrong time against the Bucs was a gut punch. I would have utilized Dillon heavily. The temptation to overthink the options at crunch time separates the great coaches from the rest.

White92 - I can't be certain but remember that those picks by the Packers defense during the second half were made deep in Packers territory. IIRC after the first interception the Packers took took on their own 32 and drove 68 yards for a TD. On the next pick they took over on their own 19 and on the third pick they took over on their 24/25 yard line. The last 2 picks were essentially punts for Tampa. It seems that everyone forgets that the Packers did convert one of the picks for a TD.

The next issue which was significant is that Aaron Jones was out of the game at that time. If Jones was in the game the Bucs defense would be focused on him which would open some things up for Dillon. MLFs offense is built around Aaron Jones because he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. The Bucs game plan was based on stopping Jones and getting pressure on Aaron Rodgers and they were very effective in executing their defensive game plan.

With Jones out the Bucs could focus on putting pressure on Rodgers and disguising their coverages since they were manhandling the Packers OL with just a 4 man rush. IIRC they succeeded in sacking Rodgers on the other 2 possessions following the picks. Also Williams was getting most of the snaps on those possessions.

It's questionable to put a championship game in the hands of a rookie RB with only 46 carries on the season. Tampa would have gone after the ball and they are good at stripping it away. I wasn't surprised that the Packers did not use Dillon much in the game. I do agree that they should have tried to run at least a few times with Williams. Not because Williams could break away but just to try to keep the Bucs defense honest.

It may not have mattered. Once jones was out of the game I think the Bucs DL was just going after Rodgers regardless and they weren't concerned about either Dillon or Williams changing the game. Thanks, Since '61

In that situation Dillon would not be effective against the Bucs defense because he doesn't have the speed to elude Tampa's LBs. Yes, he might break a tackle but the Bucs tackle very well and Dillon doesn't have break away speed.

I believe some power ball with Dafney as the lead and Dillon would have softened up the LBs and their Edge people like JPP and Barrett. This issue was Bhaktiari not in the lineup and Turner over-matched along with Wagner nursing his knee. Sometimes a scheme with draws and traps off zone is in order. Dillon can handle the load and the guy was on Home Turf.

It was strange when the Packers went to a power game, they tore up Tampa's D line. Dillon was getting to the second level and Tampa's LB couldn't handle him. They ran down Tampa's gut in the third quarter and then....just stopped.

It’s not just about the best player in a particular game, but about the best matchup between the teams: what works best versus that opponent. In my view, LaFleur got away from that in that game (and has in others when his back is against the wall). Whether Rodgers was part of that I do not know and is a question in itself, but the use, or non use of Dillon was, I agree, both baffling and still looks like a mistake in hindsight. LaFleur is learning, to fulfill his potential, these are the kinds of mistake he needs to avoid.

Excuses... for Rodgers after the INT's. Its a huge play that breathes life into and gives momentum to the team that gets the INT. The simple fact is on at least 2 of the possessions following the INT's Rodgers went w/ 3 passes and was a total of 2 3 and outs! He did NOTHING w/ the opportunities the Defense gave him. Turnovers are game changing plays and Rodgers squandered the chances he was given. He simply MUST convert on them or at least one or 2 of them. He got 3 pts off 3 turnovers, that's not going to get it done.

The turnovers were on the Packers side of the field none were in TB territory, but also not exactly deep so He had to go the length of the field either.

BTW it was also Rodgers INT w/ less than 2 min in the 1st half that set up Brady to beat King for the TD at half!

A HOF QB has to do better than Rodgers did w/ the opportunities he was given. That game was put in his hands any number of times and he didn't make the plays. At least not in that game!

Incorrect. As Since'61 pointed out above the Packers did score a TD after a pick. So 10 points off 3 turnovers and not just 3. Rodgers surely would say (rightly) it may have been 15 given the chance. Still not good enough, but not as bad as portrayed.

If Degaura is on the rise, that effectively Sternberger is on his continued decline. This begs the question of whether Sternberger even makes it out of camp, or is a late cut. After all, Tonyan had an amazing year (which makes a replay this year unlikely, because once you reach the top, there is only one direction to go). This is not said to gloat or with any sort of satisfaction. I had high hopes for Sternberger, but the light still hasn't come on. And if it doesn't burn very brightly in his chances in the preseason, he'll be hard pressed to remain a viable option.

There was talk coming from the coaching staff that Sternberger was 'dogging it'. That stopped once he was confirmed into the concussion protocol. Giving how long he was in, this must have been judged to be extremely serious for Sternberger. But for us fans it's tough to tell. The reaction from the front office to the coaching staff was interesting. MLF and his staff was told to knock it off. Serious medical injuries can't be fixed by just rubbing some dirt on it and pushing them back on the field. Seems to be mostly inexperience and some ego on Lafleur's part.

Sternberger should go on the Reserve/Suspended list so he won't count against the 53 nor will he be paid for the first two weeks. It doesn't cost anything to keep him in the team's back pocket.

There is a very good chance that Deguara and Bakh start TC on PUP.

Deguara and Daffney aren’t really direct rivals for Sternberger. One could argue that Deguara’s drafting was in part due to the fact that Sternberger wasn’t very good when tried in the H Back role and the failure of other candidates before that. Deguara was picked because he’d played H Back in college and well, a rare beast. Daffney was a fullback used unusually, such that he was closer to an H Back role than most.

Sternberger was brought in to be a move TE but one able to play more conventional TE roles than Tonyan (who had flashed in passing but wasn’t established and was a poor blocker). Since then Tonyan has become an adequate blocker and kept forward as a receiver. Sternberger has not progressed similarly (in part due to bad luck). Sternberger is not a good blocker and hasn’t consistently run good routes or caught balls.

As a result, even when healthy, we’ve seen him in the bench in favor of either Daffney or a different group. Tonyan was healthy last year, if he remains so, I see Sternberger’s playing time as threatened by Deguara/Daffney to some extent, but also by Nuata potentially. He is a more traditional TE and can block, but certainly not a move type. That’s different from the H backs or Lewis. I could see LaFleur using that skill set as well as ST benefits. I could also see the team preferring to use the roster spot for a different position and Funchess being the back up to Tonyan in effect.

Sternberger is up against it because of the emergence of Tonyan primarily. It will be interesting to see if he makes the roster. To do so I think his blocking will have to be greatly improved as well as his offensive play.

THIS was the guy MLF wanted. Josiah Deguara is the Kyle Juszczyk of the Packers offense. They're built almost indentical to one another and they're combine results are very close too. Having a guy like this in MFL or the Shanahan offense is important.

I trust MLF, he knows exactly what he needs to make this offense run. The fact he absolutely loves this guys AND wanted this guy is good enough for me. I don't give a damn if he was PROJECTED to go later in the draft. I care MLF was ape shit happy about getting this guy and the very little I saw of him before his injury and his tape from college tells me I think he IS the right pick. Getting this kid back AND an expanded role for Dillon is just going to make this offense more dangerous. The Packers NEED a guy like this. They needed a get your hands dirty kind of guy like Deguara. Meet the the new faster, stronger, BETTER version of KUUUUUUUHN!

All of this. The Shanahan/MLF offense thrives on players who can do a little bit of everything because it forces the defense to key in on players and give others on the field favorable matchups, since you can both run many different plays from the same presnap looks and run the same play from different formations.

Even if he's back week 1 I expect it will be a slow start for Deguara, but he also doesn't need to be the fastest guy on the field, have sharp cuts, etc.

Between him, the do it all back in Jones, and Amari Rodgers, this offense should keep defenses guessing and punishing them when they over commit on trying to stop the play they think is coming.

"You’re probably like, “Who? Didn’t he tear his ACL?” Ah, no, Cory. I doubt anyone on this site is asking "who" our 3rd round pick from last year is. I liked what I saw from him before the injury; he's got that "lunch pail" mentality that coaches love. I'm excited to see what he can bring this year! I'm liking the 'toughening up' of the Packers I see from Guteys' approach to the draft and MLF's scheme. This team was fun to watch (most of) the last two years and should be fun to watch this year as well.

When we were kids and played the game, most all of us heard and told about the term
"Hard Nosed". That is how Deguara strikes me. He is a hard nosed guy who wants to get in there and give 100 percent and mix it up. Of all the things he did in that shortened first season was the terrific block in the game against the Vikings where he took out two Minnesota players. I look forward to more plays of that nature from him along with a wheel route or two where he catches the defense completely off guard. To me he fits the image I like in a Packer player.

The small, yet intriguing, sample size we saw from JD last year certainly adds some excitement and anticipation on his return. Recent history has shown that players can completely recover from ACL surgery and have had highly productive seasons after the surgery. Sure, he'll be extremely rusty to start camp but as he gets stronger and more confident in his knee, he'll get more action and we'll see MLF's vision of his role in the O. With this O system design and a complete ACL recovery, JD has all the ability/mental toughness to pick up where he left off..... and be a high contributing player in this offense.

I still believe the Packers will be ultra conservative with Degura, maybe even start him out on the pup list.
The Packers have Dafney to fill that roll in the meantime and when Degura comes back they will have two excellent H Backs to fill that roll and play special teams.

I agree, nostrodanus! It might be a huge benefit for him to PUP for a while, considering the added game this season, and what a little more healing time might do to help him on the back half of our schedule.

Dominique Daffney seems more than capable of handing those duties until Deguara's able to return 100%.

Daffney was a fullback who was used offensively. There is some cross over, but it limited his usage last year. With a full off season and camp, Daffney should be ready to fill more if the H Back role as I think LaFleur intended to roll out with Deguara last year. Daffney is also a plus on ST and can play true FB. I think he makes the roster on his own merits. Look at Nuata in camp. A more traditional rugged TE who blocks enthusiastically and has decent hands. https://www.wfaa.com/mobile/article/sports/nfl/cowboys/cowboys-nfl-draft...

Yeah, Coldworld, I have to agree with you on TE Isaac Nauta. He's a player. Great blocker with surprisingly good skills as a receiver, and YAC ability. Hadn't spent much time if any on him. He's definitely in the fight there at TE this season. Big target too.

His Georgia highlights are pretty impressive. Kind of like what we all hoped Sternberger would be. That was the impression I got, knowing Jace was not great as an inline blocker, but better in open space.

I am certain the medical staff will be conservative with Deguara. I hope they will be equally, if not more, conservative with Bahktiari.

The biggest difference between these two is timing. Deguara's injury happened earlier so his rehab, logically, also started earlier. Bahktiari's injury was much later in the season. I won't be surprised if Deguara doesn't begin the season on the PUP.

Dafney's emergence last season, combined with Deguara's return, makes Sternberger expendable. If Marcedes Lewis and Bob Tonyan weren't around, Sternberger would have a better chance of making the roster.

If he's ready , play him. He's better than Dafney as the HB. Dafney can lay some leather along side Deguara in some sets. Zimmer is trying like a madman to try to stop some of the matchups LaFleur will employ with his groupings.

I am rooting for this guy to make a big impact like the media tells us he will. But I cant stand it when they hype a player as being the solution or being great when he's hardly played a down in an NFL game. Of course I hope he does well but lets wait and see how he performs before we get excited or anoint him to be the next John Kuhn.

No, I respectively disagree with your logic. I think that even though it was a small sample size of play from JD, he will be a great fit for the Packers in what they want to do offensively. Also, seeing how happy the FO was in drafting him you just got to be excited for him.

Finally, to compare him to Kyle Juszczyk from San Fran and how the SF FO views him, that is another reason to be excited about him.

In your opinion, who's worse at hyping players who have done very little in the NFL, writers or fans?

The reason I can not read packers.com is they make every player no matter how acquired sound like an NFL hall of famer.

The one that cured me of Packers.com was one when Lindy Infante was coach ( maybe the 89 or 90 season) T Ken Ruettgers was in a contract holdout again so the Packers signed T Scott Jones whom had just been cut by Tampa bay (the worst team in the league).

Packers.com hyped Jones up to make him sound like the 2nd coming of Anthony Munoz. Predictably Jones Struggled mightily!! If I'm correct, he had 6 consecutive holding penalties and was replaced at halftime by an injured guard Billy Ard.

Good article. This is one of the more fun positions to watch on offense, as it's a little easier to see the individual blocking that is sometimes away from the mass of humanity further inside. He has great hands and a ton of potential if he can return successfully and stay on the field. Dafney looks he could be a solid backup, though we haven't seen that much of him yet.

I agree. Deguara is one of the people I am most excited to watch in 2021. Granted we have a small sample size, but I sure like what I saw last year. Go Pack, GO!

I have to agree. Saying " WOW ", after a rookie starts and plays off the charts is extremely rare. Most don't even get on the field. I was really bummed he went down so early. I said to myself we really got something with this kid after only a few plays. His base is most ceiling as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to this guy mixing it up this season. He's a difference maker. GPG
