Cory's Corner: Just Cannot Get Going

Health and poor play have plagued the Packers wide receivers.

It took longer than I thought.

After Aaron Rodgers continuously berated his wide receivers in the media, those wide receivers have grown tired of that “leadership” act. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “Some of the young wide receivers have been painted as scapegoats for the Packers’ problems.”

But frankly, I’m tired of the whole thing.

The Packers have lost five straight games for the first time since 2008. The offense continues to get worse. After eeking out an overtime win against a third string quarterback in Bailey Zappe and the Patriots, the Packers continued to spiral out of control.

There are obvious trust issues because Rodgers hasn’t always pulled the trigger when a receiver is open. He has said that he will continue to hold the ball in the pocket until he sees something he likes.

Of course, the problem with that is he invariably takes unnecessary shots, or throws it late or off target, resulting in a turnover.

On the other hand, the Packers have 17 drops this season. That includes two apiece from Sammy Watkins, Romeo Doubs and Allen Lazard. To make matters worse, free agent acquisition Sammy Watkins (225), Rodgers’ buddy Randall Cobb (173), rookie hopeful Christian Watson (121) and supposed Swiss Army knife Amari Rodgers (92) only have played a small percentage of the 594 offensive snaps.

The wide receivers have shown flashes. Doubs can get open and is very athletic and Watson can be used in multiple ways. But there’s no way this group was going to surprise anyone, especially given the amount of injuries that has plagued that position group. I will admit it now…I was completely wrong about Watkins. What appeared like a solid signing on April 14, has turned into a bad horror movie. Even “The Reaping” had more juice than Watkins, who has no idea what he’s doing out there.

So what does this all mean? There are so many people that want someone to be fired because of this mess. First of all, head coach Matt LaFleur isn’t going anywhere. I agree that he has not acted like the head coach of a professional football team this year, but I want to see him with a quarterback that operates his system that is supposed to be run-first oriented.

Secondly, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia isn’t going anywhere either. The special teams has shown plenty of gaffes this year, but surprisingly, it has done good things as well.

Finally, that leaves defensive coordinator Joe Barry. I think he should’ve been fired after the season opener. If you’re going to pay Jaire Alexander as the fourth-highest cornerback according to cap hit in 2023, let him prove to everyone why he earned that money. Barry has a bend but don’t break philosophy and that’s just not what a team full of athletes needs. It needs a defensive coordinator that is willing to take chances, powered by their athleticism.

The funny thing though is, the Packers are still barely alive with a 3-6 record. And of all people, it’s going to be Mike McCarthy to put the final nail in the coffin on Sunday. The Cowboys are averaging 131 yards a game on the ground and the Packers are giving up 138 rushing yards a game.

Green Bay knows what’s coming and the Packers won’t be able to stop it.

How’s that for pad level?

It's gonna be a whole lot of the same thing next season if the kids don't get on the field, get some snaps versus NFL DB's and grow a little.

Toure needs to play and Doubs and Watson need to get healthy.

Amari is a dead WR walking and Watkins is a corpse from the living dead flix.

poor alan lazard is mis-cast as a #1 or #2 type threat. He is a gamer for sure, but he needs a complimentary cast to reach his maximum effectiveness.

Sourpuss rodgers isn't helping with all of his spouting about the issues that are occurring. young guys gonna make mistakes, get on their asses in the meeting room and/or the sidelines with some positive suggestions on how to improve. cut the tank top bitch sessions, that doesn't help anyone and drives him further from positive communications that could actually help the situation.

Oh by the way... WHERE IN THE HELL ARE THE COACHES THROUGHOUT THIS SHITSHOW?!?! They could be playing good guy - bad guy with the coaches chewing ass and criticizing leaving Rodgers to be the nice guy with positive nurturing advice... OK, I am back from fantasy land... GBP coaches are pussies and AR is a dickweed. reality sux.

It will be very interesting to see what LaFleur does with Watkins this week. If it’s business as usual then I think that will highlight the inability to manage at the root of this coaching farce very clearly.

There was an illuminating article in the local Wisconsin paper this morning on the miscommunication between Rodgers and Watkins where Rodgers threw the fade in the endzone while Watkins was running an inbreaking slant. Watkins admitted it was his fault - he missed the signal from Rodgers to run a fade.

Watkins said he noticed the CB was playing with inside leverage (and Rodgers saw the same thing) but missed Rodgers' signal (tugging at his jersey around the shoulder pad area) to change from an inside slant to a fade.

How does a veteran wide receiver who sees the opposing CB playing leverage that will make his original route tough to run miss a signal from his QB to change the route? Once Watkins saw the CB playing inside leverage, all of Watkins attention should have been on Rodgers (perhaps even signaling Rodgers). But no, he just blindly runs right into the coverage.

I have been critical of Rodgers and will remain so for his errors, but if Watkins can't make this basic adjustment, he needs to have a seat on the bench. Let the rookies at least play and learn.

Careful now, some are coming awfully close to criticizing Gutekunst.

Do some folks actually believe that 5 years as GM is enough time to evaluate Gutekunst's ability to add offensive weapons?

I mean any GM could have missed on Jimmy Graham, Jace Sternberger, Josiah Degaura, J'Mon Moore, Equanimeous St. Brown, Devin Funchess, Amari Rodgers, and Sammy Watkins.

Stop blaming the GM for what is obviously just bad luck.

We whiffed on Funchess? Actually, I wish we’d kept him. He’s better than Winfree and Watkins and can play the X role too.

He’s a free agent: could you just have hit on the source of our salvation? Or is that one hell of a desperation lunge?

So true. And while you are at it, I can't wait for Murphy to reach his retirement point and be gone. He holds everyone back from doing their job by being the last to OK things.

But in reality, we all have wishes and thoughts about how to run the team, but changes will happen much slower without a true owner. It is run by a committee of business people whose job it is to make money, steer the ship, and don't make waves. The waiting list for season tickets is years, so for them life is good and the seats are always filled. We are not real owners. Our stock certificates are just receipts for donations to upgrade the stadium. Sorry to say, but this is what it is.

JB, I get that you're unhappy. But in essence, this first half of this is about WRs. Then a paragraph complaining about Rodgers. Then a complaint about the coaches.

IMO, there's a lot more to football, and our problems this year, than WRs. Whatever else, you play the guys who are healthy, and that's Lazard, Watkins, Rodgers and Toure.

We run about 66 plays and half of those should be runs, 33 passes would break down to 11 targets for the RBs, TEs, and WRs. That's 11 targets for the entire unit. If you think the WR unit deserves more, then you can steal those targets from Jones and Dillon and Tonyan and Deguara and target them less.

It's a small piece of the puzzle. A bigger piece is Aaron Rodgers, but this situation will solve itself. He'll play well and lead the offense to first downs and points, or he won't play well, the offense will continue to seize, and the pressure to play Love eventually prevails. So that's not worth be angry about.

I'm sure the coaching staff has made mistakes that has resulted in an undisciplined team taking the field. They'll learn from that. I'm not a guy who thinks the best solution to a problem at work is to fire the guy that you've already invested a bunch of time and resources in. I'm more of a "let's see if we can fix this with what we have" kind of guy, because you usually can. Firing is the last resort, IMO.

I cannot write one huge post that addresses everything I see sideways with this team, it would break the interweb1

i have stated before that my number one reason that things got tilted was the offensive Line jumble that started in camp and has not stabilized throughout the season.

I didn't even mention that in my post above.

I am aware of much more than I write in each and every post.

Keep on keepin on LH, I see an upset in Lambeau this week... Savage with 2 picks!!!

Don't believe the media! It's all clip bait. Rodgers is the best player on the Packers. So get off it. MM should be the enemy here. Not Rodgers. This game is about Attacking. Yet we see everyone attacking everyone. ( connected with this franchise ) Quit looking through the microscope. And Let these guys play the game they Love. TOGETHER, they can figure it out. We may stink now. But the tear -down cannot be part of correction. Rodgers isn't running on expired time. He's trying to get people to listen to him.
Calling Rodgers out, is why this team is Losing. You think there is more to this team than Rodgers. And thats the struggle, with in it.
Nobody Has proved it. Not the Defense. And Surely not the Offense. The NFL is about proving yourselves. Rodger's has been doing this a long time. And it's NOT new to him. Work with him. The fight should be on the field. Not in a comment!

We’ve seen Rodgers uncoached, he’s good but not good enough to overcome certain tactics and situations even with the pieces around him.

Rodgers and this roster plus LaFleur is a fish without water. His contract on top of a mountain of other dead cap will ensure that he stays that way. It doesn’t matter whether he’s our best player, he’s no longer a piece that we can win with or enable to win. Our other best player candidate, Jones, is likely going next year too. It’s going to be worse, not better.

It was over, that should have been obvious, faced up to and accepted. That it wasn’t has proved bad for him (since he could have been paid elsewhere) and bad for us. It won’t have a chance if getting better until we face up to that and address how we got here.

Volume doesn’t change reality. It’s run it’s course. The only question is how long will the death throes be prolonged to save the face of Murphy and Co.

Since we are well and truly in the realm of the absurd now. Let’s let Monty Python handle the emphasis. Murphy is as close to an owner as we have:

Owner: Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords.

Mr. Praline: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home?

Owner: The Norwegian Blue prefers keepin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage!

Mr. Praline: Look, I took the liberty of examining that parrot when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.

(pause)

Owner: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee!

Mr. Praline: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised!

Owner: No no! 'E's pining!

Mr. Praline: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

If LaFleur isn’t going anywhere, nor is this team because of that and because of the attitudes that would require.

At this point, I no longer care about LaFleur’s sand pit abilities with Love. His coaching regime is a joke from the basics to the finer points of execution and he’s demonstrated that he’s tactically inept.

At some point the time comes to stop ignoring what is right in front of our faces. This team need a true coach and perhaps even more in the near future, a true leader to turn this around. That’s not LaFleur.

LaFleur isn’t the root of the problem, but he’s a large part of it. If Rodgers comes back and LaFleur stays it’s the worst scenario possible. That’s a one way route to irrelevance till the ‘30s.

Wake up! This isn’t just unfortunate, it’s the culmination of a series of critical mistakes (LaFleur being one).

Love to watch AR from September to December but I bet against him in the playoffs. I notice that lack of effort in Packers team vs Giants and that effort is even on lower level than in that game (baring 2nd half vs Bills).

I have no doubts that team is in good phisical condition, so it must be mental. What is the first I got from that is that team is in turmoil. The question is, who is in the root of that turmoil. I first pointed ACR, as logical source, because of his public calling of the offensive players. Behavior of coaches, especially MLF, I tend to put the blame on them. There is several reason why, but first is that we do not know if ACR said in locker room what he just repeated publicly or not. Second, I can see that defensive players are not happy with Barry and his scheme, saying that publicly, very often in form that is not clear if this is going in the direction of Barry or in the direction of their team mates. And third, most important, impresion that MLF do not care about defense or ST, but exclusively on offense. It looks like he have no interest what other 2 units of the team do and how they are doing. If that is true, all of that can produce turmoil as players think that HC does not care about them, and that HC is not the leader they will follow.

That situation open doors for players to find another leader, often between themselves, who they will follow.

Situation is additionaly complicated with ACR inluence on MLF game plans and his right to "suggests" what plays should be called. That is another strike on MLF as the natural leader (what he as HC should be).

Player feel as they are left to themselves. That produce a lot of misunderstanding among them and often diminishing their efforts on the field.

Conclusion is that until management doesn't change their attitude, we will be watching Packers playing as low as they playing now.

Fish smells from head. And, there is the reason why it is always like that.

It shows the breadth of failure in coaching: play installation, game preparation and fundamentals are all shown to have been ineffective. This is not even touching on the O calls and game plans, it’s pure execution and coaching basics.

This is one very clear illustration why keeping LaFleur will undermine us after Rodgers as it almost certainly did our Super Bowl chances in years prior. Just look at Lazard as an indication, he’s not new here. Starts to make me less baffled by our D by implication and at how our STs got as bad as they did.

I for one am sick and tired of posting the same negative thoughts or feelings about this team, coaching staff, and QB. I for one have begun to pray...A LOT for the retirement or better yet, the trade of one Aaron Charles Rodgers this upcoming offseason.

Maybe Indy would take him, Tennessee, or even Las Vegas. I mean Las Vegas would have to be attractive to Rodgers. He's a better option than Derick Carr, even THIS version of Rodgers, and with the AFC West full of great QBs, they may be able to STEAL a 2nd or even a first rounder from the Raiders.

The thing is, I would take ANYTHING to trade Rodgers. The time for a HAUL of draft picks and players was this past Spring, now you take WHATEVER you can get to rid yourselves of Rodgers and at least some of that money from that contract.

I understand there's plenty of people who still believe in Rodgers, and he could very well have a resurgence next year with some help around him. Hey, I'd even cheer for it to happen for him. But Rodgers can no longer CARRY this team. I want to see what Jordan Love has. Let MLF design a few game plans FOR Love. The game vs Kansas City last season was a game plan for Rodgers, NOT Love. Let him start 4 or 5 games at the end of this season and see what he's got.

One hope will be asking the Idiot why he allowed FO to spend that much money on one player who left team, but leave no cap space to have enough players to play football.

Or, even impossible to believe in, the Idiot will call himself of the cost of Packers organization and left Packers to start over w/o him. That might happen because he bounded his destiny with ACR destiny.

And that would bring salvation of team all of us here love.

And it will help you to enjoy on other web page in supporting your Gral.

Everybody wins.

I think you're about the funniest guy on here. You were so fantastically positive in training camp and look at you now. Blaming Rodgers for all the problems is fantastically funny too.

You're a funny guy.

One of two things will happen Sunday at Lambeau. The fans will see Rodgers play to a level not seen since last season or a QB who totally accepts it's over, not only for the team in regard to playoffs, but his career in GB. Losing to McCarthy in GB may give GB the path to fixing its problems. However, I cannot help but sense that this outcome, either way, isn't going to be easy and a win just might occur, if only to give false hope for another week.

Taryn, I've said the same thing several times.

Aaron Rodgers will play well and the offense will move the ball and score points, or not. Those are the only two possible outcomes.

It is Cosmic Karma that brings his former coach....who he helped get fired....to the field this Sunday for what could be the end of the line for Rodgers. If McCarthy crushes the Packers offense and makes Rodgers look washed up on national TV at Lambeau, it could be the end of the line for Rodgers. Do you think that would be some sweet-tasting revenge, served cold?

I've got a real bad feeling about this game, and I almost never have a bad feeling about an upcoming game.

I have a bad feeling about this game also.

The worst thing that could happen for this team, is to win, and I think they just might pull it off.

Nah, no worries there, Taryn. These guys can't get out of their own way right now to pull off a W. Even if the effort is there tomorrow, they'll be out-manned and out-coached.

I have the LH-like bad feeling about this one. I don't want to watch the final public humiliation that should send the Packers back to noon kickoffs in 2023. Can't stand the thought of multiple shots of Jerry Jones (think he'll bring Chris Christie to hug?) smiling, or close-ups of LaFleur's sad boy face.

In some ways, it will be a relief to get past this pounding, in hopes that it will initiate what needs to happen for this team to improve. Sucks to be here, though. Hate it.

Well he can take solace in the fact that it won't be MM's defense that crushes the offense. Most 8th graders that follow football would know that.

I have a strong feeling that the GBP will be exposed big time.

I do not have a bad feeling about that feeling.

I am ready for a change - or a few big ones - to occur.

Nothing short of a very large negative event will bring about the type of change necessary to salvage this franchise at this point.

Actually losing a game, no matter how horribly, wouldn't precipitate the correct change. Maybe 35,000 loudly booing shareholders who do not stop booing no matter how requested until MM stands up and walks off the stage at the shareholders meeting next year.

No- you'll see the defense keep losing players. LeFluer Say - So wut- are IR is better than your team. Because this just won't be an Attack on the packers. It's REVENGE. And then you'll see; the ones talking shit all season.
The honorable thing to do; is cheer for Rodgers win or Lose.

I'd be okay with a 4th and potential final win for the season,if it leads to even the beginning of change. Starting with the coaching. Ideally I would Go for the Murphy on down approach first but that's not realistic with this group. So let them drag it out. Make a token effort to get rid of the coach or whoever coaches followed by some further rot before the real eventual change comes.

So today let's watch the sitcom unfold.

Jaire talked about some of the players laughing and not taking the game seriously. He told them to stop laughing while they were on the field, losing.

There is a systemic issue here. Very few players seem to really care. Many players need coaches to hold them accountable and that is not happening in Green Bay.

Mediocrity is tolerated so the fat cats @ the top can enjoy the good life.

The Rodgers-Adams show blinded most of the fanbase-including me.

Some pro players truly love football. For others it’s a way out and a career more than a passion. To some that means that putting oneself physically on the line is a business decision. To others any investment has to be instilled by coaches and peers. Unfortunately, that is just life in pro sports for guys whose future isn’t on the line in their minds. If there’s a lack of faith in coaching or rifts among the team, that can be amplified dramatically.

Ted Thompson was great at selecting receivers, the current GM has virtually nothing to show (JMon Moore - Jace Sternberger - Sammy Watkins - ESB - Deguara and most of all Amari Rodgers). It reminds me years ago of former Bear Doug Buffone on his Chicago radio show saying "the Bears GM couldn't pick out an NFL Quarterback at a Manning Family Reunion". To make it worse, as a punt returner Rodgers has poor hands, poor judgment - no burst), he may set an NFL record for downed punts on the half yard line. If he played for a team with an NFL Owner and he was still on the field every week you would have to guess he was the owners son in law, what other reason could there be ?

A paradox of this game is that if Rodgers tries to do too much in an effort to beat the Cowboys and his former head coach, he'll likely fail miserably. That seems the lesson of the Lions game.
What we need is the Rodgers of the Bills game. However, my understanding is that Rodgers didn't like the way the offense emphasized the run, even though it was highly successful and seemed to increase his productivity as a passer.
I have a hunch that Rodgers doesn't know what is truly good for him these days, on and off the field. I pray he gets some insight not induced by a hallucinogenic drug or other illusory experiences.

It’s not that unusual if you step back, forget personalities and just look at what had happened on field as a team, the known, observed traits of key individuals and the evolution of the roster dispassionately. The difference between winning and losing in this league is small.

Team Leaders succeed from a platform of ensuring adequacy in the basics and then making sure that they overlay that with. Complimentary talent and effective tactical usage of that, getting the mist out if individuals and groups. Then it’s down to motivation and in game adjustments.

I’d say we have failed on every element of that. The result is much less than the sum of the parts in the roster. That’s unsurprising. This year we lost Adams. I see that as not the cause or the start of the problems, but the major tipping point that caused the whole to lose its balance and cohesion, exposing the reasons for prior failings, magnifying them and tipping the works from relative synchronization into self conflict.

There is your cliff. It was there. We had no excuse for not seeing it. Plenty did, yet we chose to deny it and to willingly step off. Unfortunately, gravity wins over hubris every time.
