Cory's Corner: NFL Must Show Its Leadership

Everyone keeps asking the same questions.

What will the NFL be like? Will there be an NFL?

We are to the end of June and the same COVID-19 questions aren't going away. Training camps usually open at the end of July but teams haven't had any formal practices to this point yet.

"I think until we get to the point where we have protocols in place, and until we get to a place as a country where we feel safe doing it, we have to understand that football is a nonessential business," said Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins to CNN on Thursday. "And so we don't need to do it. And so the risk has to be really eliminated before we — before I — would feel comfortable with going back."

Whether you agree with Jenkins or not, he makes a fair point. And not only that, but how many other players share his level of concern?

I want sports to come back more than anyone. However, now that the PGA has been back a couple weeks, there are now seven golfers that have withdrawn because of COVID-19 concerns. The reason I bring up golf is because that sport seems like it is the lowest level of risk. There is no physical contact and it is outside.

If there are seven golfers not playing and one with the virus, how does that translate to football or basketball? One sport lives off the hrill of collisions on each play and the other plays man-to-man defense without bulky equipment.

Sports need to come back. That is obvious. Ever since this started back in March, we have understood how important sports is in our culture. There has been something missing and the thing that we constantly look forward to, the thing that we yearn for, is sports.

However, the rub is only if we can do it safely. The comments by Jenkins paint a realistic picture by players. They don't want to play football if there are no safeguards or protocols that they can fall back on. And from the owner's point of view, they don't want COVID-19 to derail the entire season.

Also, I find it interesting that the NFL is allowing individual teams to decide if they want to have fans at games. So who is going to win a tug-of-war between state governors and the NFL?

The reason this is so confusing is because things are changing weekly, daily and even hourly. The amount of overinformation on this has been mind-numbing. And that's really what I think Jenkins was getting at. He wants the NFL to sort through the minutiae and put pen to paper. Get some defined leadership as to what this means going forward.

Players want things spelled out. Where they are supposed to work out and with whom. What will they be allowed to do at practices? Will games look the same or will new rules alter them completely?

I understand that the NFL wants to wait and see what happens, especially in very active states like Florida and Texas. But the longer the NFL waits, the more players like Jenkins are going to be uneasy about going back to work.

First of all there aren't 5 golfers with the virus. One has the virus. The other four have either contact with someone or are out voluntarily as precaution. That's one out of over 800 golfers. Wow are we sissys.
But I do agree with the article, and believe the leadership of powerful influential companies and institutions like the NFL, are paramount. But imo they are failing miserably so far and there is no evidence I see that indicates any improvement.

There are now seven golfers that have withdrawn.

Why are we sissies for being concerned about health and safety? I don’t understand that. I get that we need the economy to run, but at what cost?

There’s a reason why many schools are still unsure what kind of a tact they will take in the fall. It’s because they want everyone to be safe and that’s in a primarily sedentary environment. Football and basketball are anything but sedentary and need special attention.

There is too much uncertainty right now to criticize. The data continues to change rapidly and we have to be fluid enough to change with it.

What does that mean? We may need to get used to a different game than how it was played in the past.

So if a state governor says X and the NFL says Y, who wins?

Seriously Cory, are you willingly blindfolded to the political upheaval that is allowing Governors of certain States to run rampant with their abuse of power, just to have football played, regardless of what you lose that is far more valuable than a game.

As opposed to Governors of certain (Texas and Florida) states who rushed to open their states, following the President's lead, and are now experiencing the highest spikes in the nation as a result. Maybe they should try injecting Lysol.

We must run the economy at almost any cost. Of course this is a debatable political hot button. Free market capitalism is at the core of why we are free and prosperous, and by the way, healthy. Government's job is to keep us safe from other countries and from criminals. Health is a private sector industry that imo does not do better with government involvement. I do not think government does anything well with the exception of policing streets, and defending us militarily. Even fire departments are originally 'volunteer'. Government has grabbed power in this and it is very directly related to the socialist movement and racial tension by giving false narratives a foot in the door. Of course the tsunami hit when Goodel caved in over an issue that was viewed differently by almost everyone just two years ago, and Drew Brees was forced to recant for saying things that are patriotic and beautiful. All hell has broken loose over a virus that is just a little worse than the flue, and had it been allowed to run its course with Americans voluntarily taking greater precautions, there would be no 'second wave' of covid. We would all be inoculated. Caving to government mandate and shriveling under media hysteria and sensationalism is what makes us sick and weak, i.e. sissies.
We live in Wisconsin. Five states have had over 50% of all Covid deaths. Even though Government does not know how to handle this nuance, apparently the NFL (and private industry) no longer does either. And yet political correctness is alive and well. Obviously my voice is fading. But thanks anyway Cory for you thoughtful articles, comment platform and personal reply.

As I've said before, I see no way they play an NFL season this year. They can do it with other sports, but you can't block, cover, or tackle someone while staying 6' away from them wearing a facemask. You can test them all you want but you can't test the hundreds of people that are involved in putting on the games & practices (cleaners, groundskeepers, laundry workers, food services, referees, etc.) and the people they come into contact with on a daily basis. And if you can't protect all the players, how many sicknesses or deaths is it going to take before they call the whole thing off?

I know everyone is anxious for the NFL and other sports to provide them with income & entertainment, but we have to realize that we're in a once-in-a-lifetime situation right now. IMO, the best thing to do is take the safe route and wait a year before playing a season. By then, hopefully we have a vaccine for this virus and we can all go back to living our lives again.

From the beginning & all the way to an end, an effective vaccine that can be mass produced & distributed .... is our only real solution.... ---- People need to hunker down, be patient & look out for each other.

At this time in 2021, everything will be better defined, understand & that vaccine will allow 'most' people to start up again....

I don’t see how they can play games at this point. Players from all sports are becoming infected without games. The pandemic is raging through the South and the West with no end in sight. I’m thinking sports are done until we get a vaccine and/or cure.
The NY Giants are offering their fans refunds on their season tickets or a credit towards their 2021 tickets. What does that tell us? The Maras have always been very well connected to the league’s inner circle especially with the NFL HQ in NYC.

I’m afraid that we’re in for a long haul as NFL fans. In the meantime everyone stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

Lying pos Dems. like the other reply like to tell that lie. The President asked some doctors if a medicine could be developed similar to how a disinfectant is used, to be inhaled like people who use inhalers for asthma since Corvid attacks the lungs the same way. He never said to inhale Lysol.

Drump's actual quote:

""And then I see the DISINFECTANT, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by INJECTION inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that"

Pretty sure INJECTING and INHALING are two different things. But even suggesting inhaling a disinfectant is such a ridiculously, dangerous idea, it makes one wonder if this man is in the early stages of dementia.

I do live in the East Coast. I have always lived in the NYC tri-state area and I always will. We have come through the worst of the virus here for now anyway. The state governors here did a good job of maintaining restrictions until the infection rate, hospitalization rate and mortality declined significantly over a 4 week period.
We still have numerous restrictions and still wear masks in public but it seems to be working. Time will tell. Be well. Thanks, Since ‘61

Essential or non-essential that is the question. A lot of people make a living off of sports and sports contributes tons of money to the economy. What's the solution? From reading the comments posted so far, I don't see how we get back without a vaccine either. We've rushed back in many states despite the warnings and this virus is exploding to record levels again. A lot of us in here are over 60 and are at a higher risk. I won't be attending any games along side of 80k people. I will wear a mask in public and continue to protect people around me. I have 4 more months and I'm re-retiring, my job was considered essential. Thankfully our region has seen just a small outbreak, 150 cases so far here in the U.P. of Michigan.

The Covid-19 virus at the onset was taken as being very dangerous, and did spread very fast but has proved more deadly for the elderly and by certain politicians on one side of aisle.

This virus is now a more political one and is being used again for the political agenda of the previously mentioned Political Party. It's no longer about your actual health and welfare as a people or individual.

The MLB is coming back, right up until enough players of esteem and influence decide it unsafe and the start of the season fails to happen. The NFL will go the same route as politics grabs a tighter grip on the minds of players, who have already shown an easy manipulation of their individual views because of a political agenda.

The moment the public began to see freedom to participate in outdoor events, all was coming back, until the tragedy, and now the Covid-19 uptick is being blamed not on the many who rioted, but those who go to the beach or a bar, and the Party with the agenda has again crashed down on the law-abiding citizens which mandates again to close up those businesses.

The NFL has already caved to a certain Party and will do so again as the Governors of certain States under the rule of a certain Party won't allow it to open because it supports their narrative and agenda for November. With some States again issuing no crossing of State borders without quarantine of 14 days, the knife in the heart for travel games has been unsheathed.

The NFL is about money and with all that needs to be adhered to just for the Covid-19 safety, which is not going to do anything, the financial loss is one that the NFL will see as simply too large to accept. They'll lose less by cancelling the season, unless a miracle happens, which a certain Political Party will find a way to deter, because nothing can be stronger than that certain Political Party.

If you are too blind to see that this virus is near a 100% Political agenda, then you are a lost in the chaos.

I'm not saying the virus isn't harmful or deadly to a certain age group of the population, but everything being done to corral or spread and kill, is being manipulated by the Democratic Party and the proof lies in the States and Cities under their control with the sole reasoning of controlling everything and everybody.

Science is real and the data if seen through eyes of the non-corrupt, prove the death rates are far below any other ills that take lives.

This is now a financial plot to cripple the country and nothing more.

Let's look at science.

How many people have Covid-19 and don't know and feel fine. Having it doesn't mean a death certificate is waiting, and the more who test positive, proves it's not lethal to all, and protecting the elderly is a necessary function, but personal responsibility for such must also be needed as to precautions by the elderly and by their family. Shutting down the country seemed right at the early start, but it is not in the best interest of anything or anyone moving forward.

However, Democrats believe the country needs to be shutdown and why sports won't be allowed to happen, and they'll find or create a reason to have riots to stop it, if need be.

Remember, 80% of the players in the NFL are black, you honestly believe that before Sept or earlier, they won't be demanding the NFL not play in the name of BLM. Another match will be ignited and that we be that as to football.

It's Political and it's already taking over the NFL, wake up.

I'm in the age group that is more apt to die and I take precautions to protect myself. I won't however demand the young to suffer the loss of all entertainment outdoors because I can't at this time. If you're in the elder years and have tickets to the Packers game, tough shit, stay home. How pathetic are you that thousands of younger have to lose out because you feel if you can't go, neither can anyone. You're the reason the science numbers are interpreted wrong.

Or is the best way to avoid those "could give a shit what your political leanings are" infections, is to move your parents out of the nursing home before the infected are moved in? Science is indeed real, but the dissemination of accurate information is not uniform. I remember when conservatives protested at the state capitol, which caused a lot of publications to condemn them by suggesting that it would increase the spread of Covid, with attendant headlines. I did not see any follow up stories noting that there was no corresponding increase in Covid cases.

With the protests, there are studies and the results have been published in the media and repeated by politicians. I don't love Vox but they do a better job than most of their ilk. See the link below as to why the protests and looting didn't lead to an increase in Covid transmissions. I'll summarize:
1. Protests were outdoors in warmer weather (latter is iffy).
2. Protesters mostly wore masks + distanced (latter is iffy).
3. Protesters = young. Might delay the rise, not avert it.
4. Relatively small % of the population. True, a new argument.
5. Protests caused others to stay home. Nothing like fear.
6. Chance.

The article is permeated with the notion that the cause was worth the risk of spreading Covid. It asserts that the protesters were aware and consciously balanced those competing interests. It notes that protesters were urged to get tested after the protests and to self-quarantine for 14 days. Pardon me for not believing either of those things happened, if only because testing was not that readily available and human nature. Fear wasn't about contracting Covid but about being assaulted.

I'm sure the protesters rush the doors of testing facilities during the riot breaks to ensure the safety of the public, which they had just taken a break from destroying, however small in area or numbers.

This is exactly why the Covid-19 virus is now a more political weapon for the Democrats. Support riots in the name of BLM, Equality, etc, but stop and condemn any other assembly of those not in support of our agenda or narrative we deem vital.

And yes I do own a foreign car. A BMW X6. You'll see it parked in the driveway when you come by. No one in this neighborhood drives a Ford though, so you might feel a little out of place.

Yet the uptick, as you call it, is highest in Texas and Florida, two very red states not associated with demonstrations, and are, in fact, going to the beach and bars en masse, encouraged by their very conservative governors and the idiot in the White House.

It was and is an expected rise as testing increased and people mingled again. The point you have difficulty with is the deaths are not happening to the level morons want to justify the bs. Keep you elders safe, practice the protections around your own elderly and the deaths will decrease even more. Again, young people are not dying, except drug addicts and alcoholics and those who have other medical issues, remain at risk.

The most interesting issue is what is an essential business (and thus who are essential workers) versus what businesses are non-essential. By the strictest criteria I could devise, very little is essential. I'd include food production, prep and food distribution services, medical providers including producers of medical equipment and supplies. Waterworks. Firefighters and law enforcement. Probably power companies including electric, and gasoline. Probably not internet suppliers, cable companies, restaurants, bars, iphone production. In the short term, not car dealerships nor clothiers (but at some point, people will need to replenish their wardrobes and essential workers will need cars and car repairs). I am sure that my definition would differ from that of many others.

I don't blame the NFL for not coming up with written protocols at this time. The data is changing rapidly and the NFL actually still has time to see how things turn out and study the experience of other sports.

I actually think it would be a poor choice to rush to write protocols. Workable protocols will seem downright callous if things take a turn for the worse. I don't see how a season can happen unless things change dramatically and rapidly.

I don't expect the NFL to cancel the season until the first week of the season. If such an announcement were made and owners and GMs believed it, Gute should immediately cut Linsley, Lewis, Funchess, King, Taylor, maybe Patrick, and if they know they are not going to re-sign certain guys, then perhaps Bakh, Jones. Sigh, the packers are so overloaded on the cap that other teams would benefit far more than they would. [No Clark because his deal is guaranteed.]

I asked a friend who works in the front office of an AFC team that exact same question during the NFLPA-NFL contract negotiations. Seems the owners did bring it up, but the players reps did not to open that subject up at the time. Since this was at the beginning of the pandemic, both sides had to be aware of what could happen. Who knows what side agreements, handshake deals the two sides made since then.

Way to go: let’s have a strike to follow the Covid period. This is a very minor microcosm of why we are so screwed up. A health risk that even the epidemiologists can’t quantify risk on has been subsumed in political correctness and ideological interpretations to the omission of either reason or intelligent discussion. No wonder we are in the mess we are in.

The chances of a season appear to be getting less every day. Until there are workable vaccines widely available and taken, it looks like the early opening was a dawn of false liberty. The hard choices are going to get harder I fear, lives and economic hell versus freedom and rampant state meddling. Tough choices that, if conducted like this will end up with only the worst of both worlds in terms of outcome.

I was deemed an essential worker but I don't think I was or am. I know how my employer got around the issue. OTOH, while I come into contact with people it is brief, there is no physical contact, and I can maintain 6 feet of social distancing pretty much.

I do check the CDC website and other sites that use numbers rather than adjectives. I don't believe that the US handled this well, but I think there is plenty of blame to go around. I was going to post a link but I can't get it to work. Suffice to say that the US has the 7th highest rate of deaths per million in population.

There have been 120000 deaths in a country with a population of 330,000,000. If you project that out over a full year, it’s about 250,000. If you do the math, it comes out to a mortality rate of .000757. That’s about 8 out of 10000.

If you remove the people who are over 85.... which is 1/3 of the fatalities....., it’s more like 5 out of 10000, which is about the size of the small town in Northern Wisconsin that I grew up in. Lower the age to 75 and it’s an even smaller number.

So in order to possibly prevent the deaths of five people, we’re going to shut down the town, drive people to bankruptcy and increase both suicides and domestic violence.

60% of the people who get this will have mild symptoms or be asymptomatic . Only 1 in ten will require a brief hospital stay. And the overwhelming number of people who contract the virus gave it to themselves by sticking their dirty finger up their nose, into their eye or in their mouth. So I have to wear a mask so they won’t do that?

“Flatten the curve”, they said, and I’ve complied for the two weeks they asked for and more. I’ve lost over $30000 in money I will not get back. I cannot go to the gym and that compromises my own health.

If it’s OK to riot in the streets, it should be OK to get a haircut. As Taryn and others noted, this has become about politics and people have retreated to their respective corners.

Since I was a little kid in the 60s, I’ve been warned not to trust the government; it’s some of the best advice I’ve ever received.

There will be an attempt at football this fall, but the season will end when the serious rioting begins in November. Too bad, because we’ve got a good team, but you can’t play games in the middle of a gunfight.

A lot of numbers leather. We can't ignore the fact that ICU units are full or filling up.This puts our nurses and drs at risk, many have died from constant exposure. Also have you heard of broken glass syndrome? You can get sick, recover but the lungs are scared for life. This happens in all age groups.

If the ICU's are actually filling up, it's with those who are elderly and already suffering with severe underlying medical issues. The way this is ranted about in the fake media, one would think young people would be dropping dead and walking about as those 'White Walkers' in Game of Thrones.

Why do people scream science and then ignore what it's actually proving.

This is not an apocalyptic event outside the minds of the easily duped, who sadly have hold of the media.

So we should write off the "elderly and already suffering with severe underlying medical issues?"
Just so we don't infringe on your rights?
The problem is that your rights threaten my right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I'm a 48 year (58 years old) insulin dependent diabetic. If I or any of the dozens of other diabetics i I know come down with it, we've got about a one in nine chance of dying.
Look across the world at countries that have succeeded vs those, like ours, that have failed at containment. Look at the steps that led to success or failure. We match the failures and it's not a Democratic plot.
It's poor leadership and/or compliance.
Hopefully partisan politics and electioneering stop right now so we can join hands and fight this thing with national unity.
It's the way we win wars, we win technology, etc. Without unity we're a laughingstock to the rest of the world community. GPG!

Here’s the deal, at least from my perspective. I don’t have the right to tell you what you have to do to make me feel safer, and you don’t have the right to tell me, either.

The protests were bad in two ways. First, they broke the medical and social protocols in place. Taryn and TGR, in their comments are right to point at the political and social effects that has and will come in the following months. Having Medical professionals screaming 'no justice no peace' with the mob did them and their profession no good in the mist of a raging pandemic. Second, it prolonged the first wave by months, maybe till the end of September of this year. A small silver lining (according to my chief medical officer) is that the government at all levels will for the first time be able to track the progression and severity of the virus. Oh Joy. The good news is there are five vaccines in various stages of testing and all look highly promising. But even with every break, we won't see it until December of this year, more likely January of next. Which means no herd immunity till August of next year in the best case. So Cory's point remains. How much of risk does the NFL (and for that matter college football) want to take in this environment. As is we have no immunity and will not for another year or three if the vaccine trials fail. These people need to come to grips with this now, if they can...

The elderly and already medically ill from other life threatening issues will be hit the hardest and that is a very difficult thing to stop.

How dare you compare the deaths of soldiers in the Wars we fought to those of Covid-19, where a too large a number of elderly people were murdered by the hands of corrupt Democratic Governor policies put into effect at Nursing Homes.

I'll simply assume, right or wrong, that those under 30 having 'permanent' damage to their organs are the same that are rioting and the numbers of cases are as fake as the others being portrayed to create the chaos in which to kill this country.

I'd also say that those under 30 people are already suffering from the effects of drug addiction or use as like alcoholic, which puts them in the same risk of the elderly with medical issues.

Let's also remember, the Flu still kills more each year by a very significant number, without the help of Governors bs policies.

Why don't you talk about the great leadership from the gov. of New York and Jersey?
Trump sent in the hospital ship, converted the Jovits Center and there was the mobile hospital set up in the park by a charity group.

And yet, the great gov. sent infected people into nursing homes which accounted for a great percentage of the deaths. Why don't you Dems ever bring up the incompetence by them and the deaths they are responsible for? Or do your blinders obstruct you from seeing all of those deaths.

For someone who claims to be an independent, your posts seem awful one-sided....

No, no, we can't relax restrictions, can we? What is everybody supposed to do--throw a tarp over our heads and never go out the door for a long undetermined period of time? And what about the inner city residents you purport to care about? Do you think it's fair or practical to keep them confined inside their row homes in the sweltering summer heat? A lot of them probably don't have air conditioning....

Back to the NFL, I hope you weren't expecting leadership from such a wishy-washy, appeasing commissioner.

I have never expected leadership from Goodell. He caters only to a few of the owners. He doesn’t care about the integrity of the game, or the players and least of all the fans.

I don’t say that people should be stuck in their homes, just continue to wear masks in public and maintain social distance as best as possible. Limit the size of gatherings. Nothing will be perfect but we need to try to mitigate exposure until we have a vaccine and/or cure.

I am a registered independent. In my voting life I have voted for McGovern ‘72 (because I didn’t like Nixon rather than I wanted McGovetn). ‘76 I voted for Carter( not much choice after Watergate), then I voted for Reagan 2x, GHW Bush 2x, ‘96 I voted 3rd party, 2000 W. Bush, ‘04 I voted 3rd party again. ‘08 I voted for McCain, ‘12 I voted for Romney, ‘16 3rd party again. I didn’t like or trust either Hilary or Trump. Anyway you see that I have voted more Republican than Democrat during my voting life.

Now, you have no reason to believe me or what I’ve posted, but I don’t know you and I have no reason to lie to you. Or to take the time to write this post. Yes, I am anti-Trump but I’m not exactly pro-Biden either. I have tended to lean conservative on defense and government spending and lean progressive on domestic social programs. We need and our country espouses social, judicial, economic and political equality. To achieve that we need solid leadership at the Presidency and in Congress.
I believe that the American people have been short-changed by both the Executive and Legislative branches for the last 20-25 years. Our leadership at the Presidential level has consistently declined during that period up to the current nadir which we are Experiencing
today.
CHTV doesn’t have the space for me to list all the mistakes, poor judgements and injustices that have impacted all of us over the last 3-4 administrations. If the USA were a football team over the last 20-25 years our record would be like the Packers of the 70s and 80s.

I’ll just say that I don’t agree with the current direction America is headed. It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. Trump could be a Democrat for as close as he is to being a George Will conservative. BTW, even George Will has stated and written that Trump needs to be voted out. That should be a huge red flag, alarm, siren for any and all conservatives because George Will has been the leading voice for American Conservatism since the 80s.

Some will blame the Republicans, some will blame the Democrats but we have no one to blame but ourselves. This is our country and it’s up to us, all of us, to make our country better. And we are better than where we’re at right now. We owe it to our children, grandchildren and beyond.

I regret any posters who have been upset by my earlier posts. But I am a Packer fan and my passion for our Packers also extends to my belief and value systems. As always, everyone stay well.

This is a very thorough and well-thought post. Today must have been quite an ordeal for you with all this correspondence, so I'll keep it brief.

Agree on the first two points, although limiting the size of gatherings can go on for only so long and maintaining distances is tough to do sometimes.

I don't subscribe to philosophies of any political pundit, including the pompous George Will. The thing will all these guys is that while you may agree with most of what they're saying, there's always a dark underside....The most horrible "journalist" of them all is Bill Moyers--a very, very sick man. On the other end of the spectrum, you have Sean Hannity, who from the comfort of his studio, tries to get the field reporters to ask inciteful questions to angry mobs on the street...what a wussbag.

People say Trump is unfit for office (which seems to be true sometimes), but Biden???? He looks so perplexed when you hear him speak sometimes, as if to say, "Are they really making me peddle this nonsense?" I think Joe Biden would make James Buchanan look like Abraham Lincoln--at least that's what I thought as I strolled past the Wheatland mansion a few weeks ago.

Back to the first point about the integrity of the game, the on-field product has to reflect a balance between offense and defense; I hope the next commissioner permits the defenders to play instead of pulling their hands back and looking at the refs every time they touch an offensive player, if you know what I mean....

No question G. Will is pompous, his predecessor Buckley was even more so. Be that as it may Will has been the benchmark of conservatism for the last 4 decades.

As for Trump/Biden they highlight the leadership crisis that we are living through in this era. We’re at the beginning of the 3rd decade of the 21st century and these two are the choices we have.

We deserve better and we need better. I never thought that in my lifetime I would experience what is happening in the USA at this time.
As I posted we owe it to our children and the future generations to do better. We need humanity, compassion, and integrity. That includes both parties, corporations and other institutions. We need to get refocused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, economic development, social and judicial equality, equal pay for men and women, all races, religions and lifestyles. A tax system that requires Corporations to pay their fair share and reduce the burden for working families. We need college tuition loan relief or the younger generation will not be able to contribute to growing the economy. They have loans that cost more than home mortgages. What sense does that make?

We have had too much focus on profits, executive bonuses, creating wealth for shareholders versus employees, too much of a wealth gap between the top 1% and the remainder of the population. Need to refocus on middle and lower income families.
National Healthcare: 3 questions, 1. Does everyone (citizen) have a right to healthcare? Yes. 2. What level of care should we provide? World class and ease of access. 3. How do we pay for it? Employer provided and private insurance for those who can afford it. Government provided for those who can’t. We are the only industrialized country that does not provide healthcare for all of our citizens. No excuse for the USA.

First we need a leader to begin to pull us back together again. Someone who doesn’t insult everyone and blame everybody else.
Take responsibility and be accountable. Congress needs to do the same. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are minor things, compared with what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

As for the game, I agree that defenses need to be allowed to play again. I doubt that will happen in this era of alleged concern for player safety. I have posted and advocated here for years that the answer needs to be focused on better equipment versus rule changed that are making the games unwatchable. I know the league is experimenting with several options for helmets but the answer needs to come sooner or later before the games become an outdoor version of arena football. Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

Importantly what the NFL is failing to consider is what the fans decide.

The governors win because they will either limit the number of people who can gather or they will allow people to gather in large unless someone has the vision and foresight to implement a national policy on how we get through this pandemic until a vaccine and/or cure is found. Thanks, Since ‘61

" unless someone has the vision and foresight to implement a national policy on how we get through this pandemic"

Where have we heard this before? Hummmm.......... Wait, "Trumps not a King, he can't tell states what to do, states have individual rights.... Trumps not a king".

Who do you see in the mirror, a hypocrite or someone wearing a blindfold?

So.....hypothetically.......a governor in Michigan , for example, could say “only 30,000”, or something, and theN the Lions would have to determine how these are allocated among the season ticket holders?

And it certainly seems to interfere with interstate commerce, which gives Congress the authority to regulate this.

And then what happens if the mayor says “we’re a sanctuary city and we’re not going to comply”? What happens if 10000 more people flood the area? Are you going to arrest them?

By encouraging disrespect for the rule of law, it’s made it a lot harder to govern. People choose which laws they’re going to enforce and which they aren’t based on how they think it benefits them politically.. Public health isn’t the primary interest here.

Leatherhead - your post is exactly why I posted that we need some guidance/leadership from the national level. If not the scenario you point out is likely to happen. However, I believe that the season will probably be canceled before any of this happens. Thanks, Since ‘61

No True fan would sign a liability waiver for attending a League Sanctioned event, that would fall into the territory of the red hat cult and the for-profit preachers. Do not expect a NFL season and hunker down to help your fellow Americans by following the protocols and staying alert, not inert.

More and more reports are coming out saying Corona is bacterial not viral, if that’s the case then this was intentional not an accident by China. that is serious and will mean some kind of retaliation , it still has a 99% recovery rate and people need to catch it to fight it. my 88 year old Mom caught it in her nursing home , never showed any symptoms never had a fever , we all have O blood which they say is more resilient. Also since March you can’t get any numbers for seasonal influenza deaths because they have inflated the Corona numbers with them , here in NYC I believe the state will collect 33k per Corona death so the more the merrier, I do also believe the Democrats want a high body count to use against Trump. We have seen how week democrats are allowing their cities to burn and the disrespect for law enforcement myself being a former officer , many law abiding citizens are tired of these protests and all the BS with them and will only strengthen Trump and law and order.

And this is my point. None of us thinks we’re misinformed, but all of us are, to one degree or another. Not just on the coronavirus, but pretty much on everything. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s true, it only matters if it sells.

I believe what marpag1 is saying is that this is a Packer blog and not a political one. I would hate to see this site turn out like the Packer site which is 90% personal agenda and politics. Thanks Marpag1 that needed to be said!
