Cory's Corner: No Moral Victories

The Packers hit the ground running by averaging over six yards per carry.

I’m sorry, but moral victories don’t count.

I don’t want to sound like an unhappy grump that wants to keep people off his lawn, but the Bills beat the Packers 27-17. Buffalo should’ve blown the doors off the Packers but Green Bay managed to make it somewhat respectable. The Packers dropped their fourth straight game and with a 3-5 record, they will have to at least win six of their last nine to make the playoffs.

The best thing about Sunday night’s game was seeing the Packers rack up 208 yards on the ground vs. a run defense that was ranked No. 1 in the league by only allowing 76.2 yards per game.

“It just depends on how we’re going to play,” Aaron Rodgers said after throwing for 203 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. “Tonight, limited attempts. For most of the game, we were running the football. So, if that’s how we want to play…”
Well, Aaron, if you want to win, the best option is to play this way. It isn’t the same old dynamic offense that everyone is used to, but it is also very effective. Aaron Jones notched 20 carries and tallied 143 yards. That is the largest amount of carries that he has had this season.

It’s pretty sad that it took eight games for this team to figure out that Jones is one of the best offensive weapons in the NFC. Jones has always been the road map to success but the Packers have always wanted to take the “shortcut.”

“We’re going to have to push the ball down the field in order to win games in this league,” Rodgers said.

That’s not a strong endorsement from your first ballot Hall of Famer. The Packers finally did something meaningful on offense and Rodgers wants to do something different. The running game combined with a play-action game can win games in this league when you pair those things with a strong defense, which the Packers have.

Now it’s up to the Packers. You don’t see too many 3-5 teams that are willing to be buyers. General manager Brian Gutekunst has a tough decision to make today. Does he put even more chips to the middle, knowing that his quarterback still doesn’t believe in running the football consistently?

The Packers pass blocking has been abysmal and it will take some pressure off of a receiving corps that has been hamstrung with youth and injuries.

I still think this team can get a lot better. Unfortunately, the last eight games have felt like a string of preseason games. This team continues to dabble with a winning recipe and after Sunday’s game it appears that they are close to a mouth-watering winner.

(Just remember that there aren’t moral victories.)

“We’re going to have to push the ball down the field in order to win games in this league,” Rodgers said. "

NO, Aaron, we're not going to have to push the ball downfield, at least until you show you can actually HIT the man running downfield, and the offensive line actually gives you enough time to even attempt it. I honestly believe this guy's EGO, won't allow the Packers to do what they do best...Run the ball.

The Packers just ran for 203 yards against the #1 defense in the NFL. Jones had 143 of them and there was an AJ Dillon sighting and he actually had a few nice runs too. IF 12's ego can't get out of the way and continue to play the way they did against the Bills (running the ball), then it's DEFINITELY Jordon Love time.

I heard a lot of the moral victory crap on podcasts yesterday which IMO was a JOKE. That's what Bears, Vikings, and Lions fans do. Look for the moral victories when their teams SUCK. Sorry, I'll never stoop to what a Bears fan might do. I refuse to pump up a performance that doesn't deserve to be pumped up. They LOST...END OF STORY! Just like they did when they signed Rodgers to that ridiculous extension!

Moral victories and possible victories over our fellow NFC North dregs the Lions and the Bears are all Packer fans have to look forward to at this point.

At least the Bears are tanking, clearing cap space, and pannying for the future.

We're paying the most expensive QB in the NFL $50M a year for 4 years to hand the ball off and throw to the worst WR corps outside of Chicago.

Thanks Gute!

Im not into moral victories either but I said a week ago that finding an identity was more important than that one game itself. Seems like they found that identity with the run game (which you and I have been calling for since training camp) but it also appears Rodgers is still refusing to get on board with it for more than 1 game (which weve also been condemning Rodgers for forever now). Yeah they lost to the Bills in Buffalo, but that performance was good enough for at least 5-3 maybe even 6-2 or 7-1. Im not even mad anymore. Its just sad. It doesnt have to be like this.

"The Packers finally did something meaningful on offense and Rodgers wants to do something different."

I believe you found one of the significant points of problems Packers have. Unfortunately not the only one. The biggest problem I see is SC problems. And that problem came from disjoint management of the football operation. It looks like MM has one idea, BG completely opposite one and HC find himself in between and do not know to which side he should step.

Suddenly nothing is good. MM, BG, players, drafted rookies, veterans, referees, NFL, fellow fans and especialy - the truth.

I was reading comments on this site after the loss to the Bills. So much bitter "sky falling" type from many of fans, despite many was predicted even harder loss before the game even started.

Few fans are trying to give you logical, calm, fact based approach, but no. Everything is finished. Packers will disapear in the history and will never exist any more. Ridiculous.

For few things I think the game confirmed that D is not problem. Problem exists on the O. Todays Packers O can not score more than 24 points and vs very good and excellent teams Packets can not win.

If you do not want to see that, that is your problem.

I'm not for trade out or trade in at the moment. You can only get average or under the average players because we do not have space to pay true game changers.

The Packers didn’t keep it close, Josh Allen kept it close. He channeled AR by going away from the run and then channeled Brett Favre by winging rocket balls all over the field. Either he or the OC went temporarily insane for a quarter and a half. When they finally went back to running, the game was over.

Run the ball. It didn't win the Bills game but made it clear where this team is going for the Ds they're going to face. IF? IF they can get the line to pass block, teams will sell out on the run and the Packers can then take advantage of it with the passing game. A novel idea would be to attack some more in the mid-range since all they've basically done are short and behind the line passes or take shots. They more or less had to do that against the Bills when they went to single high a few times but with lesser teams it will make them vulnerable.

Anyone hear how Jenkins is doing? Probably won't hear till tomorrow.

He was injured by someone who steps on his foot at practice. Sunday, it still hurts him a lot and that is why he was inactive. Obviously nothing is broken so it is good sign he might be available for the next game.

BTW, PFF grades:

Top 5 offense
1. QB Aaron Rodgers: 89.2
2. LT David Bakhtiari: 88.8
3. RB Aaron Jones: 85.1
4. LG Zach Tom: 73.2
5. WR Romeo Doubs: 72.7

Top 5 defense
1. CB Jaire Alexander: 90.8
2. DL TJ Slaton: 76.2
3. LB Quay Walker: 75.3
4. DL Jarran Reed: 71.1
5. DL Devonte Wyatt: 69.6

Bottom 5 offense
1. RG Jon Runyan Jr: 47.9
2. TE Josiah Deguara: 50.7
3. C Josh Myers: 52.1
4. RT Yosh Nijman: 52.3
5. TE Marcedes Lewis: 57.0

Bottom 5 defense
1. LB De’Vondre Campbell: 29.8
2. CB Rasul Douglas: 30.0
3. DL Kenny Clark: 37.9
4. S Adrian Amos: 40.4
5. OLB Preston Smith: 43.0

For me there are few very suspicious grades, but, what I know...

Trade Love and get what Rodger's Needs. Dump the In and Out, OL. And Moral victories will be a thing of the past!
Change this Defense back to the 4-3-4. Because they're just not stopping anybody. And won't; until our DL is among the best!
So let's just go to the head of the problem. It's the coaches! And LeFluer needs to fire some people after this charade.
You have a hurt QB. And that in itself speaks volumes about this OL. The Hanson experiment told you one thing. That experiments don't work in the NFL. Tinker it all you want. You won't make the play-offs if you can't BLOCK!!!!
And after 10 plus years of a pathetic DL. Maybe we need a Coaching Carousel instead!

He's only a benchwarmer because MM refused to trade AR last off-season. He'd obviously be our starter if that trade had been made. He's certainly more mobile than AR at this point in AR's career, so a suspect OL would be less of a problem. Assuming a trade to Denver, we would've had the 9th pick in the draft and could've taken any receiver we wanted or, IIRC, the #1 OT available.

Make that trade, and we would have a better record today than we have.

Love is the future, not AR. Problem is, he'll be the future for another team.

Its not Lowry's fault hes being left to take on double teams play after play cuz Berry wont get out of the damn nickel defense. Thats not Lowry's game. Hes not Gilbert Brown. Hes being misused like so many other players on this team. Ive never seen a coaching staff sabotage their own players like this before. I could name about 15 guys that are being grossly mismanaged, maybe more.

Bills stopped the run when they needed to - on 4th down attempts. They were pretty much toying with us letting us run and burn the clock. So this entire line of thinking is unproven until we win with it. Does anyone care if AJ runs for 2000 yds but we have a 3-14 record? But even still - it took 3 losses in a row for MLF to get AJ more touches. Had he done that earlier, we probably win 2 of those. So he should be on a very hot seat.

Why is it our opponents often have a few plays with wide open receivers?
And why is it that when Bills ran the QB sneak they pushed our line so far back it was embarrassing? When is the last time we did that?

I think we have the players to be better except maybe in the WR group. No team is going anywhere when their top 4 WR's are injured. But I think the coaches cannot get the best out of some players. Classic drop off in play after getting the big contract. How can Savage be that bad?

So now we are on the pray for a miracle bandwagon - that AJ can do this the rest of the season, that Doubs (and Toure?) just grew up and take over the WR leadership. Not sure what the D needs but the coach took how many games to figure out we shouldn't play soft?

On to Detroit. Gotta start win streak somewhere...

I'm with you. I sas how about putting up 14 points quickly by passing then run. All we do is screw around trying to do long drives to keep our crap defense off the field. IMO we have the worst defense in the league and the passing game is second worse.

I know there are a lot of voices to run run run but I say how many points did we put on the board running. If your not mixing up the run with the pass your not balanced and your not forcing the defense to spread itself out.
At the end of the Bills came proves my point. Were down 17 in the 4th. Its too dam late to just start tossing the ball around like were now shifting gears. That never freeking works. But thats what we got into because while we were running wild in the first half, the other team was passing for quick touchdowns. 24 points we gave up to the other team while we were running a lot. We did a good job running out our own clock.

If you can't run the ball, you're not going to be able to pass either. Did you see how it was done last night by Cleavland? They didn't even have an MVP quarterback. Their runs left lots of wide-open receivers.

Generally speaking, you score more points passing than running. The majority of touchdowns in the league are passing TDs.

You don't run the ball to score points. You run because it protects your QB, it keeps the defense off the field, and it wears the opponent down.

Buffalo scored three quick TDs in the passing game , and we didn't match. That's why we were behind. I'm still reviewing those three possessions. One was helped by a long Singletary run, and another by a long Allen run. Other than that, they didn't get much done on the ground. In the air, Allen only completed 13 passes in 25 attempts.

13. Kind of reminds me of 2019 when Garrapolo threw 10 passes in the Championship game. Chicago, which is the worst passing team I've seen since the 72 Packers with Scott Hunter, scored 29 points last weekend.

If they wouldve ran from the beginning of the game it wouldve been more. But more importantly, the people calling for the run arent calling for abandoning the pass game. What were calling for is some balance and creativity. What were calling for is an end to the 40 pass vs 14 run games where they dont even try to run and get their asses kicked. What were calling for is consistant running to open up the playaction game to help make life easier for Rodgers and the receivers. Thats not so crazy is it?

"I’m sorry, but moral victories don’t count."

I completely disagree. Do they add to the winning column no. But they do count. When a team is playing as bad as the Packers had been, to finally come out of a game feeling good about some things, is a moral victory and that matters.

"Buffalo should’ve blown the doors off the Packers but Green Bay managed to make it somewhat respectable."
Exactly. The Packers are the reason why they made it respectable. Lets finally give the Packers some credit. They didn't allow the Bills to blow them away. The Packers were playing without a lot of key top players. They only allowed 3 points in the 2nd half. They forced 2 interceptions and a punt. For the people that are saying the Bills didn't try? Really? So they just let the Packers run all over them and they had Josh Allen throw 2 interceptions?
Had the refs not screwed up the OPI call it would have been a 6 point game on the final drive. That would have changed a lot of things.

“We’re going to have to push the ball down the field in order to win games in this league, Rodgers said."

Rodgers isn't wrong. They have to be able to throw the ball downfield. But it has to be as a compliment to the running game. They finally found something they can hang their hat on offensively with the run game. They finally found the running game. And not just working, dominating. But they have to be able to compliment the running game with the downfield throwing. The OL struggled in the first half but played much better in the 2nd half. Doubs looked really good down field catching just about everything his way. Toure had a big play. Rodgers looked pretty good catching the ball downfield. If Watson can make it back will be a downfield threat. They will get Lazard and Cobb back at some point.

The Bills game should be used as a moral victory. Because it should set them up into feeling good about going into Detroit and winning. IF they win at the Lions, it could be the turning point in the season.

That's why the buck stops with MLF and he should have been fired for not firing Drayton. A little tough maybe but in hindsight, it should have been done. So now he is doing the same thing. MLF standing by Barry is all we need to know concerning how the remainder of this season will play out. Without strong defensive play we're not going to win many games going forward with an offense that has an OL playing as poorly as the Packers OL is currently playing. Yes they ran the ball well but when we needed to win on 2 4th down situations our OL was pushed back and we failed to gain the yardage needed for the first down. Both times we were in Buffalo territory. Both times the Bills went with Cover Zero and we couldn't win the LOS.

this is why Rodgers is correct that you need to move the ball down the field. Just like you need to run to pass, you also need to pass effectively for the run to succeed. Teams are playing single high safety against the Packers to stop the run and when we attempt a pass they are just blowing past our OL and top of Rodgers by the time he receives the snap. When he had time he was able to get deep passes off to Doubs and Toure which resulted in TD strikes. we. should have had 3 TDs but absurd officiating took the Tonyan TD off the board.

Rodgers thumb is still injured and once again we face an opponent which provides a good opportunity for Love to play and give Rodgers thumb some time to heal. But if MLF is standing by Barry I don't see him giving Rodgers a week off either. Where's the vaunted ultra conservative Packer medical staff? Or is Love just that bad. So bad that he would be significantly worse than an injured Rodgers??

another move that the Packers should make is to replace Savage with Ford or anyone who knows how to tackle. Maybe Douglas should move to Safety with Amos and Ford should be the slot CB. I'm not sure which is best but Savage has been hurting the defense all season. Something needs to change. Lowry should be chucked as he has proven to be useless. Gives his snaps to Wyatt and Slayton and let's see what happens.

As for the receiving corps let's go with Doubs, Toure and Lazard when he's back and rotate in Cobb (when healthy) and Watkins in specific downs and distances. I'm not sure about Watson. He looks like he needs another season to be ready to play in the NFL if he can stop being injured.

The OL is a mess. The Packers need Jenkins back healthy. At least then the left will be solid with Bak and Jenkins. Myers has not played very well this season and the right side continues to be a sieve even with Runyon and Neiman. Maybe the right side needs a few weeks to gel. The Bills were pushing both of them all over the field for most of the game. All of this should have been figured out during TC and pre-season. The fact that is obviously wasn't is on the coaches.

There are no moral victories in professional sports. You either win or you lose. Find your best 11 on both sides of the ball, come up with a game plan, execute for 60 minutes and get after the opponent. Half a game is not good enough and a few splash plays won't cut it either. Thanks, Since '61

60 minutes includes adjusting to what the other team is trying to do to stop you or run on you too.

Going into week 9 and still trying to figure the O-line. I think the right side will get better now and they can help that side more with TEs if Jenkins is healthy.

Still want them to try Savage's speed in the slot with Rasual D. on top with his smarts and ball hawking ability. It would help Amos too, I think.

If Aaron Rodgers is still undermining his head coach, then nothing else matters.

"I’m sorry, but moral victories don’t count...

...The Packers finally did something meaningful on offense and Rodgers wants to do something different."

How can doing something meaningful not count for something?

"Well, Aaron, if you want to win, the best option is to play this way."

Except the way they played didn't result in winning the game. I'm so confused by this article.

it is a bit circular and I share your dizziness.
Maybe it's the subject material that has us dizzy and confused more than the words of the writer?

As of now with the trade deadline about 2 hours awayn and the Packers head office has done zilch, leads one to believe they are a bunch of dicks!

Right? I don't know why they didn't trade for Josh Allen.

What about amoral loses? Those performances against the Giants, Jets, and Commodes violated a few international laws and at least two laws of physics, and they still count as Ls. Plus, they made me sick. So, I don't think we can simply wish away moral victories or amoral loses based upon what Cory thinks or doesn't think.

I know Bart Starr wouldn't want us to discuss immoral victories, and he would forbid any talk of immoral loses. BUT, it is 2022 and as civilized society slowly circles the drain, we need to ask that hard questions. Who among us is willing to sell their soul to get the team back on track? Someone make a deal with Ol' Scratch, will ya? I ain't got time for this shit.
