Cory's Corner: Pedal To The Metal

The Packers cannot hold anything back on offense.

Remember when the Packers were within striking distance of the No. 1 seed in the NFC?

That seems like such a long time ago as the Packers have limped into the playoffs on a four-game losing streak. Green Bay didn’t even want to win the season finale at Minnesota thanks to giving former practice squad player Clayton Tune the start at quarterback.

So the Packers treated Week 18 like a preseason game. A lot of teams use Week 18 as a way to self scout ahead of the preseason slate that begins in August.

So who exactly are the Packers? I have no idea. Jordan Love hasn’t absorbed a hit since Dec. 20 when Bears defensive Austin Booker handed him a concussion and forced the Packers to be cautious with their franchise quarterback.

“I think we’re physically in a better place,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur about a comparison from the 2024 Packers that lost to the Eagles 22-10 in the NFC Wild Card Game. “You definitely stick with your process that you believe in. It’s just everybody has to understand the magnitude of the playoffs and what that brings.”

I think the Packers understand it very well. The last time the Packers advanced to the NFC title game, it was 2020 and their offense was ranked No. 1 in points. This year, the offense has been ranked 16th, despite tallying over 400 yards of offense four times this season.

I would expect the Bears to knock Love down as often as possible. The main difference we saw between Love and backup Malik Willis was that Willis is very good at using his legs. Love is apprehensive, even when there is plenty of green space in front of him.

Love will have to extend plays with his legs in order to find an open receiver. But at the same time, I would like to see the Packers insert packages for Willis where he can fake it to Josh Jacobs and sprint to the outside and a likely first down.

The Packers could win a couple playoff games or they could lose right away. The Packers should’ve gone 2-0 against Chicago this year but a silly onside kick had other ideas.

As for the Bears, you have to respect what they are. They are a 1980s Big Ten team that can run it between the tackles very well. The problem is first year head coach Ben Johnson has been getting too cute. The Wildcat snap on fourth down at Chicago was weird and asking Caleb Williams — who has issues with accuracy — to make a lot of difficult throws just doesn’t make sense.

All the Bears have to do is run it between the tackles. That isn’t sexy but it will roll the clock and wear down the Packers defense that has been ravaged by injuries.

This is the game where Love has to show why the Packers are paying him $50 million a year. He needs to make a plethora of tight window throws and he cannot get jittery feet when the Bears bring the house.

I think the playoffs fell right for the Packers. They know the Bears very well and most importantly, they know that they can beat them.

Now it’s up to the offense and score. Don’t even think about putting your foot on the break.

All gas.

"insert packages for Willis where he can fake it to Josh Jacobs and sprint to the outside and a likely first down."

Kind of an obvious play package, isn't it? Everyone will know what's coming. If everyone gets blocked it will still be hard to defend.

Of course, if everything is getting blocked there's no need for cute Willis play packages. That's the crux of the matter. Blocking. Win at the line of scrimmage. Wonder if anyone else has ever thought of that?

I don't think Love is "apprehensive" to run around. I think that's how he's coached. He's made some big plays with his legs when required. He's earning his 50 million.

This game like all the others only comes down to winning the line of scrimmage. If that happens the stars will come out to shine. If not, it won't matter what the "stars" do.

I think it's time to show that the Packers are the more experienced playoff team. When's the last time the Bears were in the playoffs? No more youngest team in football talk. MLF has more playoff coaching experience than Ben J. also. Time to show him a thing or two and yet not need to use all the tricks in your bag on the Bears so you can use them after you move on.

The idea is to play off that and go play action, and hit a pass-catcher leaking out on the play. Thing is, they could just as easily to that with Love (see below).

"That's the crux of the matter. Blocking. Win at the line of scrimmage."

Bingo. Too many 3rd or 4th and short plays where the OL gets pushed back or LBs get penetration--or outside defenders get a clean run and can chase down the line--and stop plays cold because they know what's coming.

The recipe to beating the bears is score tds in the redzone. If the packers score tds in the redzone at soldier field instead of field goals the onside kick never comes into play. If the lions scored TDs in thr redzone last Sunday instead of field goals it doesn’t come down to the wire. Bears D is gettable and will let the offense into the redzone. Packers have to take advantage of every redzone trip or the bears run game will wear on the defense.

Yea lets take out our starting QB so we can run an obvious play that the D can key on. I know unless your QB is sure fire HOF the back up is always the most popular guy on the roster, I have lived in enough NFL cities to know that is the same everywhere. If you look at the stats however, to talk that Love should be replaced or even taken off the field is just silly. He is 2nd in EPA per play, only Drake Maye was better this year. You want to take a guy off the field who is 2nd in expected points per play? This stat is newer to a lot of folks but it is a great way to measure efficiency over each play. For more traditional measurements like QBR and QB Rating he is 73.1 (3rd over all) and 101.2 (6th). I was a critic of Love and still am in many areas but Love is a proven starter in this league, Willis is still trying to become that. I think both benefit from the offense they play in but I think lots of Packer fans will be surprised that Willis doesn't do as well next year away from MLF and the offense here in Green Bay.

"I think lots of Packer fans will be surprised that Willis doesn't do as well next year away from MLF and the offense here in Green Bay."

Most likely, the team that bids him up and signs him is probably going to be a lower-echelon team riddled with holes (one of which will be at QB, of course). It might not be the missing the connection to LaF, but more playing on a really lousy team. Bottom line is that the sample size on Willis isn't very big.

It also could be he lands in a place where the support is really good and when he gets his chance, he lights it up. Whatever he does--as long as it's not in MN and not otherwise at the expense of the Packers-- I wish him the best.

Not sure why you would say this. GB is very inconsistent in run D, but has shut down plenty of teams even later in the year, including Chi until the failed onside recovery. That game was over. Now GB (re-)picked up a very motivated Ford who actually has the size to hold up.

I guess the PTSD over Henry, who was also very inconsistent, is to still too fresh ...

It’s not just a playoff game, it will say a lot on how the organization looks at the future. I still do not put a lot of trust in what our new CEO said last week about what a great job MLF has done with all the adversaries that he has dealt with this season. BS, the loss to Cleveland and tie with Dallas was before the season started to take shape. I hope whatever decisions are made after the playoffs will not put us in a downward spiral.

Firing a coach who can not only win with a back up but have him excel is a good way to put your franchise in a downward spiral.

Most administrators/GMs aren't going to offer much but words of support in their pressers and statements. This is why most pressers and statements from management--especially in-season--aren't worth your time.

"I hope whatever decisions are made after the playoffs will not put us in downward spiral."

When you're living above the waterline in the league for as long as the Packers have been, there's always more room to go down than up. If Policy chooses to make a move on either Gute or LaF this off-season, he needs to be damn sure he's right and have a clear path for where he wants to go afterward.

If he makes a move on Gute, who do they replace him with? There's no GM worth his salt that will come in and work under the current structure the way it's set up.

You're going to have to say what a "worth their salt" means...if you mean proven and successful, GMs who are "worth their salt" are not out and available on the market, and you can't hire them away from other teams because teams can block those interviews.

It's still a promotion from an assistant GM or scouting director position, and that's probably what you're hiring if you dismiss Gute as it stands.

When GB loses in the playoffs its almost always because the offense struggles. This game we need the offense to set the tone early. They need to move the ball, and score TD's. We have too many weapons to settle for less.

"I would like to see the Packers insert packages for Willis"
I wouldn't mind seeing them using this on 3rd down short yardage situations. Bring him in where he has the option to handoff, run or throw. It would be a nice change of pace and would maybe help an area that has struggled a bit.

I think Willis's strength--or where he creates the most chaos for a defense--is his unpredictability and improvisational skills (if you consider the read-option to be improvisation, too). Add in his athleticism and he's a tough guy to defend. In those short-yardage plays where the playbook and personnel groups are more limited, and defenses are crowding the LOS more and pushing upfield to contain on the edge, I think a lot of that goes away.

I am looking more in the middle of the field on a 3rd and 2. I wouldn't mind bringing him in. Spread it out, go in shotgun. having the receivers running routes, to give him options to throw, but run RPO. If he thinks the RB can get it, hand it off. If he thinks he can run, run it. I think that is a good wrinkle that is really tough to defend.

MLF slogan of all Gas.
Is going against the da bears pope!
The bears have No character.
Their Emotional Strength is a motto.
"Good, Better, Best. Never let it rest.
Till your good gets better and your better gets best,”
While All gas is tied to Go Pack Go.

This isn't business as usual.
This is a rivalry. Brought back to Life!

A Concusion and elbow injury have led to victory .
Where Love did not finish against them.(4-2)
So the Bears know they must take Love out again.

Their Game plan promotes violence,
harm to others, and hate.
And that just doesn’t justify the pope
Being a bears fan.

Take aways will determine the out-come.
So Love and his WRs must protect the ball.

Agree, who is the bad ass on the Pack's defense to return the favor. Odunze may be ready this week and he tilts the passing game. Diggs may be a lifesaver on the perimeter. Keep Valentine as the Dime guy. See if McKinney shows up as a playmaker? Defend the middle of the field, Hafley.

I think Mike McCarthy said something to the effect that “every game is our Super Bowl now” when we went into the 2010 playoffs. He was right. There’s no point in hiding things when you are one and done unless you are so far ahead there’s no need. It’s simple, win or go home, so leave no stone unturned in trying to get the win.

I was reading the comments about Willis below. I think some are overlooking the fact that Willis is genuinely fast and, importantly, runs like an RB, is built like an RB and not a track star.

Have him out there with Love and you’ve essentially got a Lloyd running option. Sure, he could also throw, but it’s his genuine ability with his feet that adds a dimension we lack if Love is out there too. Love, Wilson, Jacobs would pose a variety of threat we can’t otherwise.

Obviously, running Willis is a risk. He could get hurt, then it’s Tune/Ridder backing up Love from thereon out. But if you don’t win, that’s not an issue. At some point, if games are close, you have to throw out the caution and take such risks as this in the playoffs.

If you don’t try you don’t succeed. I think at least 2 HCs in our division would see the Willis option as an obvious one. Will LaFleur even consider it?

Everything for the current Packers leadership is riding on these playoffs. Neither MLF or Gute has gotten extended and the all in nature of the Parsons trade tells me that Policy is putting on the pressure and may want his own guys moving forward. Up to that point he was having a terrible game and would have been castigated in Chi. Then Doubs blows the onside, big mo totally switched and all of a sudden Caleb was able to pull it off. It still took several tight plays, including Quay's jersey being tugged 2 feet behind him on the game-winner, or sack, no win.

Really? Seriously, just stop. The organization has signaled in a multitude of ways that they're going to stay the course, and Policy isn't interested in blowing things up when we're so close. Gutekunst and LaFleur are staying, and we're already getting ready for next season.

Unless I've missed something, this is our base offense for this game. Love, Jacobs, Musgrave, Watson, Reed, Doubs. Except for Musgrave, this was our preferred grouping.

The Oline will be Walker , Banks, Rhyan, Belton, and Tom. When this group is healthy, they've done a good job.

Defensively, it'll probably be Gary, Enagbare, and Van Ness with some other guys rotating in at DE

We have Cooper, and Walker, and McDuffie at LB. This is how we drew it up in the offseason. The secondary has a solid group of safeties and Nixon and Valentine are a pair of veteran corners

We'll miss Parsons and Kraft. Other than that, this is pretty much the team that we hoped to put together since April.

One thing I really like about Jordan Love is that he seems to do whatever it takes to win.
He'll hand off the ball over and over again if that's for the good of the team, even if it means that his passing yards are rather modest.
At least this is my impression. From what I can see, fans of the Packers should be grateful for Jordan Love, and excited about the future with him as our QB. Let's hope that future starts on a high note this Saturday and long into the postseason.
***
Having opened my comment in this way, I think it might be good to pass a little more than run in the playoffs. We need a balance of run and pass, but I'd lean toward the pass.
The passing game seems to be what the Packers do best on offense. We have top players at quarterback and wide receiver. Our offensive line seems better at pass blocking than run blocking.
I like to think that our head coach has been saving some plays for the playoffs. Maybe a screen pass or a draw play. Maybe rolling out Love once in a while, so that he can either pass, run out of bounds, or throw the ball away easily without a grounding penalty. Then there's the presnap motions and various pass routes that can be designed.
***
Use the pass to set up the run.
Open up the offense not by throwing deep all that often, but with an array of short and middle routes setting up the occasional long ball. Baffle the Bears defense, and move the chains.
I want the Packers to be physical against the Bears, but also to outsmart them.
It'd be fun to see the Packers offense operating the way it did a couple of seasons ago in the playoffs in a big upset win over the Cowboys.

Swisch,

The reason that Love is not complaining about not throwing the ball very much is because Jordan knows his record as a starter is now 11 wins 18 losses and 1 tie in games where Jordan drops back to pass more than the Packers run - that is a ABSYMAL 38.3% winning percentage!!!

Rodgers Sunday night dropped back to pass 49 times and the Steelers ran the ball 24 times and the Steelers won. More on the won loss records of Jordan and Rodgers under Lafleur when passing more than running below.

However with Gutekunst's prize - Jordan - the Packers cannot pass consistently.

The only way the Packers beat the Bears is if Lafleur takes the ball out of Jordan's hands and runs on more offensive plays that Jordan drops back to pass.

These are the updated won loss tie records with Jordan as starting quarterback:

8 wins 20 losses and 1 tie - 28.1% winning percentage - when Jordan either throws an interception or losses a fumble.

20 wins 2 losses - 90.9% winning percentage - when Jordan does not throw an interception or lose a fumble.

Lafleur now after 3 years - 51 games - with Jordan as the starter is 28 wins 22 losses and 1 tie - 55.9% winning percentage - AND JORDAN HAD A TOP 10 Packer Defense in 2 of the 3 years and this year's 11th ranked defense was in the top 10 through week 16 of 18. The Rams allowed only 20 and 19 points in week 17 and 18 relative to the Packers 41 and 16 points allowed after which the Rams overtook the Packers for the 10th position.

Lafleur after 3 years - 53 games - with Rodgers as the starter was 41 wins 12 losses - a winning percentage of 77.4%.

Overall 77.4% winning record with Rodgers after 3 years compared to 55.9% overall winning percentage with 3 years of Jordan starting.

Let that sink in, but don't stop there.

And in 46 of those 53 games - 86.8% - that Rodgers started the Packers dropped back to pass on at least 50% of the play calls. And in those 46 games where Packers and Rodgers dropped back to pass more than they ran, the Packers won 34 times or 73.9% of the time..

Jordan is now 11 wins 18 losses and 1 tie in games where Jordan drops back to pass more than the Packers run - that is a ABSYMAL 38.3% winning percentage!!!

So what we had in Rodgers for 15 years was a Franchise Quarterback as a starter who was a 4 time MVP and Super Bowl MVP Super Bowl winning QB that was graced a top 10 defense by Packers General Managers Gutekunst and Thompson just 3 times in 15 years and not afforded the overwhelming # of top offensive draft picks that Jordan has been graced the last 4 years.

And what we have in Jordan is nothing more than a game manager that Lafleur cannot trust or count in in critical situations when the Packers need to pass.

And in 17 of those 18 games that Jordan and the Packers lost where Jordan had passed more than the Packers ran, Jordan threw an interception or fumbled. The only game that Jordan did not lose a fumble or throw an interception was the Falcon game in 2023 when Jordan tried to do a quarterback sneak without the ball on 4th down and turned the ball over that way.

The Packers are now 17 wins and 4 losses - 80.9% winning percentage - when Lafleur takes the ball out of Jordan's hands and running plays account for at least 50% of the Packers offensive plays.

Lafleur can only do so much to hide Jordan's issues - and Lafleur has done a hell of a job hiding them.

This is a Jordan problem and thus a Packers problem as there our times the Packers are forced to pass. When the Packers fall behind - often do to Jordan's inaccuracy and/or fumbles or interceptions - the Packers need to score more quickly and are forced to pass. When the defenses of the opponents put 8 in the box, the Packers are forced to pass downfield.

Lafleur could call as many passes as he needed with an ELITE QB and he had one in 4 time MVP Rodgers and Lafleur and Rodgers were deadly when Rodgers dropped back to pass more than the the Packers ran.

Gutekunst destroyed the Packers chances for Super Bowls - past, present and future - with his ego and incompetence and insensitivity to veteran Packer players.

Does Gutekunst have the the character to admit he made a mistake - many of them - and to trade Jordan Love as Roseman did with Carson Wentz? Most true Packers fans knew back in 2020 that the pick of Jordan was terrible and the trade of Rodgers in 2023 was terrible and now that Gutekunst in desperation overpaid for Micah Parsons.

Malik Willis is our Jalen Hurts.

Jordan Love is our Carson Wentz.

If the Packers run more times than Jordan drops back to pass the Packer beat the Bears Saturday night.

Rodgers Sunday night dropped back to pass 49 times and the Steelers ran the ball 24 times and the Steelers won.

However with Gutekunst's prize - Jordan - the Packers cannot pass consistently without Jordan making some BONEHEADED DECISION - not to mention his slow processing of what is in front of him and his lack of lateral movement and agility or elusiveness in and outside of the pocket.

The only way the Packers beat the Bears is if Lafleur takes the ball out of Jordan's hands and runs on more offensive plays that Jordan drops back to pass. Beyond Jordan's inept play, the Bears defense allows the most yards per carry of any of the 14 teams remaining in the playoffs - 5.0 yards per carry.

Jordan is now 11 wins 18 losses and 1 tie in games where Jordan drops back to pass more than the Packers run - that is a ABSYMAL 38.3% winning percentage!!!

This game will come down to MLF and his play calling . His decisions will be crucial on third and especially 4th down. He should hold nothing back , be decisive and consistent . He needs to step on the throat of the Bears defense all game long .
