Cory's Corner: Stop Thinking And Just Play

The Packers can still make noise in an unpredictable NFC playoff field.

Now is the time.

The Packers season hangs in the balance. Green Bay is 4-7 but has the benefit of playing in an NFC where there aren’t many teams to trust.

The problem is, the Packers’ next opponent is the current No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Green Bay has had a full season of spinning its tires. It committed seven penalties vs. the Giants in London, seven more vs. the Jets at home, nine more against the Commanders in D.C., eight more against the Bills in Buffalo and finally eight more against the Lions in the Motor City.

The Packers are out of chances. They lost all five of those games because they frittered the game away. Even in the game against the vaunted Bills, the Packers could’ve won with mistake-free football.

But that’s where we are now. The Packers cannot afford any more mistakes. No more drive-altering false starts, free gift pass interference calls or late hit penalties.

This team came into the season carrying the fifth-best Super Bowl odds, but now the Packers are down to 18th — right above the Falcons. I’ll be honest, I never thought that the Packers would be taking on this much water, but then again, the reason they are drowning is because the USS Lambeau has a hole that has been ignored.

By now, people expect the Packers to fail. They expect Aaron Rodgers to airmail a handful of passes and they expect him to throw another handful at his receiver’s ankles. They expect the secondary to play several yards off of a receiver on short yardage downs. They expect a head coach to bend to what the quarterback wants and desires.

That’s why the next six games should be easy. There’s no pressure anymore. Plenty of people have already written the Packers off. But in an NFC that has been pretty flimsy, there’s amazingly still time for the Packers to make a run.

Even the mighty Vikings, who looked like they would clinch the NFC North by Dec. 1, got whitewashed so badly, the 40-3 Dallas win was the largest road win in Cowboys history.

The Packers can still turn this ship around. But it’s going to have to be a mimic of the Dallas game. Melt the clock with the running game, while forcing Philadelphia to be impatient and throw too often.

Now is the time the Packers have to play with as much urgency as possible. Scrap the bend, don't break defense. Don’t play to keep people in front of you, but instead play to disrupt the offense and cause turnovers.

It’s no use even talking about Thumbgate anymore, because Matt LaFleur had his chance to give Rodgers a rest and never did.

The Packers still have time. So the best thing they can do is just play.

And stop thinking.

Start playing like a well-coached team. Just win one.

I want the Pack to win every game. Is it possible to go on a run? Sure. Teams are going to start to overlook the Packers or take them lightly, at least. Maybe they can play spoilers (which is fun).

Can they go into the playoffs and win against well coached teams that have different game plans than they had during the regular season? They haven't yet. It would be fun to extend the season. Would it help them in the long run? Or would it be better to start the off season with a head start on the playoff teams for a change, because there's stuff wrong with the coaching on the team. Like Cory mentions above, they need to put these guys in a position to succeed in the near future. They aren't far away. The current coaches can wreck them and get them hurt for no reason but to make it look good by the end of the season.

The Packers have shown that they have a hard time moving on from coaches who finish the season strong or make it to the playoffs.

I suppose that could be taken wrong too. I can't take the blame for the lack of communication on the team. What's with that, 11 games into the season? It can't be coaching, can it?

The reason they EXPECT it Cory is because the Packers deliver the above without fail just about every game. Not only do people (the fans) expect them to do this, the opposing team EXPECTS them to do it. The Packers being "Mathematically" alive is just a way to give Packers fans hope. The Packers and their coaches are going to do EXACTLY what they've done all year.

I lost hope when this team lost to the Lions and put up what, 9 points doing it. As much fun as beating Dallas was for the moment, I said after the game the Packers MUST beat Tennessee AND Philly for the Packers to salvage this season. I'm going to borrow a phrase from Ron Wolf for the Dallas game. The win against the Cowboys was like "A fart in the Wind" in this Packers season.

There's no miracle coming. No "Relax" or "I think we can run the table" in this Packers team. Nope this will be the year in Packers history where I will wonder well into my 70's (I'm 62 now) what MIGHT have been had the Packers TRADED Aaron Rodgers away for a kings ransom. Hell, with Mark Murphy here for another minute, it might be the 70's again while I'm turning 70!

Very well could be a fart in the wind, but is there a better team to have that fart in the wind against then the Cowboys? Hopefully against the Vikings they can muster up another fart.

Stockholder,
Nice quote from Bart, and not completely off base.
Did he mention anything about a team getting their asses kicked weekly due to poor coaching?
Was that quote from his playing days, or his coaching days? The records from those times are complete opposites. I could understand that comment coming from his coaching days.
But I for one can't stand here and defend a team for which there is no defense (both literally and figuratively), the talent on this team far exceeds their record.
I'm as big a fan as you are, and I love the Packers win or lose, but the facts are the facts, they suck, and they're quite often out-coached.

It's not courageous to be felled by the sword of the inept. It actually makes you a larger part of the ineptitude, because you denied its coming/arrival and still took the blow, willingly.

Not only that, but it's hard to find help to rebuild, if you're rebuilding with the same failed ineptitude.

Really It takes courage to root for a team from your living room. When fans and the media say nothing about an inept coaching staff, it puts no pressure on the FO to make changes. How much more help can a team get from it's fans when home games are always sold out. The media in green bay is so easy on this team. The N.Y. Yankees fans booed Aaron Judge in the playoffs after hitting 62 home runs in the regular season. Rodgers would cry like a baby if the media turned against him.

Rock solid as always, Nick.

For myself, I had little to no buy-in this season. The Packers are rudderless because Aaron Rodgers is not a sound leader, at QB - where leadership really matters. Couple that with a diminishing skill set that comes with age, and a mindset firmly he’ll bent of heroball…

Whoosh.

Imagine if he were more positive alone. Who wants to play their all for a pouty bitch who blames everyone else when things go south?

Character has been a concern to me for years with AR.

Maybe some year we see Matt LaFleur’s scheme on O. During a game. That would be kinda cool…

"The Packers can still turn this ship around. But it’s going to have to be a mimic of the Dallas game. Melt the clock with the running game, while forcing Philadelphia to be impatient and throw too often. "

This is the best way for the Packers to beat teams. With a productive ground game and with play action passing. Hopefully with the mini bye it will give Rodgers extra time to heal up. One of the differences from the Cowboys game to the Titans game as Rodgers accuracy. Have to feel that extra rest will allow Rodgers to be closer to the Cowboys game then the Titans.

Something that hasn't been talked about enough this year is how hard of a schedule GB has had. They had a 5 game stretch that they played in 5 different cities. They have played all of these teams with winning records.
Vikings (8-2)
Patriots (6-4)
Giants (7-3)
Jets (6-4)
Commanders (6-5)
Bills (7-3)
Cowboys (7-3)
Titans (7-3)
And they have played the Bucs who are 5-5.

They have the 2nd hardest schedule. 2nd only to the Lions. 9 of their 11 games they have faced a team that is .500 or above.

The unfortunate part is that they have had chances in games and have squandered them. The offense just seems to make to many mistakes. They take 2 feet forward and one step back. They have a big run or play and its called back for a holding call. They have a throw on 2nd down and its dropped. Then 3rd down something happens where they don't get the 1st down. Or they finally get something going on offense and the defense can't get off the field. They just shoot them in their feet way to much.

They have hope. Maybe not for this year but for the future. Watson is looking like the guy they hoped he would be. Hopefully they get Doubs back sooner then later and Toure needs more playing time.

As long as the Packers have even a slimmer of hope I will be pulling for them to try for a playoff run. Never forget the Packers 2010 season needed major help to make the playoffs. While I'm hoping it will happen, they have not given us anything to make us believe it will happen. But its one week at a time. They are playing the team with the best record in the league. And they have not been world beaters the last 2 weeks. Packers have a chance. If they find a way to beat the Eagles that could spring board them into some good football the rest of the year. We shall see.

Ok Lets remove the Packers game against these teams.

If we removed the Packers games the opposing teams records would be...
Vikings (8-2) - Packers lost, they would be 7-2.
Patriots (6-4) - Packers won, they would be 6-3
Giants (7-3) - Packers lost, they would be 6-3
Jets (6-4) - Packers lost, they would be 5-4
Commanders (6-5) - Packers lost, they would be 5-5
Bills (7-3) - Packers lost, they would be 6-3
Cowboys (7-3) - Packers won, they would be 7-2
Titans (7-3) - Packers lost, they would be 6-3
And they have played the Bucs who are 5-5. - Packers won, they would be 5-4

Not really seeing much changes in the records. Actually in fact all the teams would still be .500 or better. Only one team would be even at .500, the rest are above .500.

But instead; we carve up the packers organization and Cook Rodgers beyond any rewards.
And No matter what you could have got for Rodgers. It Was all Fantasy! And still is.

The Team will follow. Why you can’t be honorable and show some class.

Obviously the Packers need to play one game at a time. The problem with the Packers is that they play about half a game at a time and then poof! they're gone.

Poor pre game preparation, questionable coaching decisions, stupid penalties, poor route running, dropped passes, poor throws by our QB, injuries, poor tackling, blown coverages, bad officiating and many other factors have all contributed to the Packers failures this season. For a long time Aaron Rodgers was able to put the team on his back and carry them. Now he needs help and he's not getting any.

Bottom line is that the Packers need to play a perfect or near perfect game to win and they have not been capable of playing at that level. We watch the same mistakes week after week and our coaching staff is apparently fine with that. For whatever reason the team doesn't play with any sense of urgency.

Can they win a few more game this seasons? Yes, I believe that they will but I don't have the confidence in our coaching staff to lead this team on a playoff run.
The Packers have been out prepared, out coached and out played for most of this season. We can blame Rodgers or the battered OL or the defense or the STs all that we want but when a team with at least some talented players continues to play as poorly as the Packers have played this season it's on the coaching staff. If a team's play is a reflection of it's coaching then the 2022 Packers are telling us all that we need to know about our coaching staff. Thanks, Since '61

I had high hopes that this week would be an upset special when I posted soon after the DAL game that PHI offered the best chance out of MIA, MIN PHI to steal a win. PHI had lost run stuffing rookie sensation, Jordan Davis, who would not be present to face us and PHI is still playing down to the competition. Then, as a competent GM would, Howie Roseman went out and signed DTs Linval & Suh to insure their DL would no longer be susceptible to the run. The beauty of it is that Philly's success has now made it an attractive vet destination, making a GM's job that much easier. We too could be in that position with execution from the front office on down; instead we're pretenders fixing for a high draft slot. At this point, given the cap circumstances and the conundrum at the coaching & executive levels, any win in '22 is just setting this franchise further back as there won't be change without crash & burn.

November 22, 2022 at 08:34 am

I have no proof, but it seems team chemistry is rapidly dissolving at 1265 Lombardi. The coaches may have lost the players. I am getting that intuitive feeling I had after MM's last game as Packer HC when they lost to the Cardinals on that cold day in Lambeau in 2018. I told my brother in law as we were walking out of Lambeau "you know, I would not be surprised if McCarthy was fired tonight. He's lost the team."

Watching that game was depressing. The Cardinals players were making more noise than the fans in the stands. Packers players just standing around by space heaters, no energy, no urgency, just body language saying "whatever."

So here we are again: Barry's rope a dope defense must be just lousy to play in when surrounded by so many playmaker teammates. No football player wants to be labeled as "soft". How much "fun" it must be to play for a DC who demands you play a "soft" D.

By LaFleur's timid leadership, he has allowed the offense to be increasingly led by a fading MVP consuming most of the Team's seed corn, who's surliness, finger pointing, and on field awful body language would drive me nuts as a teammate...especially knowing Rodgers impending retirement plans will destroy the team. It is clear ML is totally intimidated by Rodgers. It is both comical and sad. If you are a weak leader like ML, who seems a great guy, decisions are made for you and increasingly you just go with the flow. Offense has no identity now.

Big Salary Bisaccia has slightly improved STs but they are still a marginal, "just don't make a mistake" group.

Many of the team's most talented players know they won't be wearing Green and Gold next year due to Acting GM Murphy's cap destroying, meddling decisions. Murphy made Gutey GM...but Brian is mostly Mark's administrative assistant. Gutey, ML, and Ball must have their decisions second guessed by not just Murphy but by the other two "managers" on Murphy's Politburo. That level of micromanaging would drive me nuts.

After that Cardinal game, the HC was removed. After this season the President, or GM, or Master Sled Hill Maker must be removed and replaced with an experienced, successful executive that lays out a vision, gives clear direction and then lets his managers do their jobs and holds them accountable.

I miss Bob Harlan. And with Harlan as an example, the Packer renaissance could happen very quickly...but not with Murphy.

LambeauPlain - The executive board won't be making a move on Murphy as long as the revenue stream is secure, which it is, and the brand image is maintained. Those are the priorities for a non-profit organization.

If you look at Murphy's decisions, like building Titletown, 2 stock sales to improve the stadium, and re-sign Rodgers, they are all in line with those priorities as opposed to winning SBs.

Beyond that Murphy won't move on Gute or MLF because they are his guys. Basically this is the Packers management team until 2025. We need to hang in until 2025 and then we'll see what happens.

When merchandise sales dwindle and no shows fill the stands, as in the McCarthy dismissal timeline, Murphy will show the Emperor has no clothes. He has the whole floor painted black. He would best be served to resign.

The Packers would be best served if Murphy resigns. Problem is that he won't. He has another 2-3 seasons to go and then he'll retire with at least 12 playoff appearances, one SB championship, stadium improvements and Titletown as his legacy.

Merchandise sales will dwindle but that is a small percentage of the Packers overall revenue. There won't be very many no shows. Packer ticket holders will sell their seats rather than get 0$ for them. They'll make enough to pay for some if not all of the next season's pass and hold onto their seats until the Packers get it right again.

If they didn't lose ticket sales during the 70s and 80s they never will. Especially now that fans can sell off their tickets on their own and make a profit at it. Murphy and the Executive Board could not care less if the seats are filled with Packers fans or visiting fans as the long as the revenue comes in.

The football team is a hobby now for Murphy and the Board. They have made the mythology of the "Frozen Tundra" the year round attraction whether the team is winning or losing. Thanks, Since '61

I don't think you are painting a fair picture.

Yes, Murphy - and the board - are concerned primarily about revenue. What they've done with making the frozen tundra a year 'round attraction, or bringing concerts and World Soccer to the venue in the offseason, or the Packers Hall of Fame, or even the sledding hill everyone likes to mock - is they've helped secure the future of football in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Not just keeping a team in Green Bay, but keeping a team with every opportunity to be competitive in Green Bay. With top flight facilities and medical facilities, all the bells and whistles.. and a steady year-round revenue stream, because while broadcast revenue sharing has been a boon for the Packers and many other teams in the league, it can not be assumed to be there forever. It is subject to re-evaluation and change. There are voices in the league that do not want it to continue.

And so the Packers are diligent in securing new revenue streams and finding creative ways to fill the coffers, because if they are not, football in green bay could find itself unable to compete if the financial landscape shifts.

I expect this to be taken as petty, but I would stop the ridiculous celebration after a 1st down arm pointing and other, especially the after play jaw flapping when you're losing. Just get back to the huddle and execute the next play. It's the Mark Gastineau effect, celebrating a sack while getting your ass kicked by three scores. Body flexing after one play, then getting run over the next, makes the latter even more pathetic and the prior a show of a quickly lost value. Winners get to boast and showoff, during and after the game, Losers get to be quiet. Put that energy into execution, which seems to be at a near-death level.

Of course, I've always thought that not celebrating after a good play was classier (Barry Sanders style), like you expect it, and it will happen again. These choreographed dances kind of make me sick. Especially if you're losing.

Let’s just cut to the chase. It’s time to get the youth on the field and let them evaluate what they truly have. Wyatt, Ford, Tom, Toure, etc..Also, once mathematically eliminated, it’s Jordan Love time. To hell with Rodgers ego. His thumb is clearly an issue. Shut him down too. Facts. Out. GPG! 👍👊🏈

This isn’t a team. It’s a collection of guys promoting their very own brand, like it or not. The rest of the season the guys with expiring contracts will be promoting their brand to get that do-re-me $$$$ next contract. Peaky Blinders Hair, Lamborghini pulling up to practice, Big-Ass Green/Cheddar Sombrero…That’s my brand Boys!, do I get a gold star for participating? NFL=$howbiz! R E L A X

Two tidbits to toss:

Coach LaF, please remember you are not at Lambeau. Don't move your arms up and down...will look like an Eagle flying...

Hire, one James Andrew Leonhard for DC...don't take no for an answer...sorry Bucky.

That was easy...

Hoof Hearted?

It would take a miracle for this team to make it to the Playoffs. Which could happen, but likely won't without some wicked good luck.

I would love to see the viks go on a losing spree to the Pats, Jets, Lions, Colts, Giants, Packers, and bares... That would be almost as satisfying as seeing this team coming together and performing despite their coaching.

One game at a time...

Let's see how it ends.
