Cory's Corner: The Packers Are Living In Fear

This team needs to stop being afraid of each other and start being accountable to each other.

How did we get here?

How did the Packers fall off a cliff?

How did the Packers only score nine points against the worst defense in the NFL?

“We will truly be underdogs for many games moving forward,” said Aaron Rodgers after the Lions beat the Packers 15-9 on Sunday. “Hopefully we can embrace that. We have two games at home. We’ve got to win those two games in a week and then this thing looks little different.”

Rodgers threw two picks in the red zone for the first time in his career and threw three picks for the first time since 2017. He was 23-for-43 with 291 yards and a touchdown in addition to those three interceptions. He had a passer rating of 53.5 and the last time his rating was that bad was the 2021 season opener against New Orleans that saw him put up a dreadful 36.8.

But Sunday’s game just looked like the worst showing for Rodgers as a pro. He had a ball bounce off an opposing player’s helmet and he routinely threw the ball low and short.

We are here because of fear. General manager Brian Gutekunst was afraid that Rodgers was on the decline so he moved up to draft Jordan Love. Then Gutekunst was afraid that Love wasn’t ready to take the reins and reworked Rodgers’ contract to kick more money down the road. Finally, coach Matt LaFleur is afraid of Rodgers. The head coach gives the quarterback carte blanche and allows him to publicly criticize his young receivers but does not publicly criticize the starting quarterback when his play has been less than average. (Rodgers’ fourth quarter passer rating is 11th in the NFC — which is seven spots behind Marcus Mariotoa.)

There are too many people afraid to say something. They are afraid to tell the truth to spare someone’s feelings or ego. And I’m sick and tired of hearing how close the Packers were to landing someone at the trade deadline. Stop being afraid of the asking price and live in the moment. Just go for it. Is it a risk? Hell yes, it’s a risk. But so is offering a guaranteed base salary of $59.465 million in 2023 to a 39-year-old. The Packers knew that even if Rodgers had a good season this year, balancing the checkbook was going to be a chore in the years to come.

So where does that leave this team? The Packers just aren’t very good. You could make an argument that Sammy Watkins and Amari Rodgers shouldn’t even be on the roster, but both still have a jersey because injuries just cannot stay away. David Bakhtiari, despite how good he’s been, just isn’t the same. I realize that it’s not his fault that his knee cannot be right but after this season, the Packers are going to have to say goodbye to one of the best left tackles the franchise has ever known.

It’s honestly been a House of Cards this year. Elgton Jenkins, who has been a very good offensive lineman for the Packers was not the answer on the right side and the entire offensive line cratered. Pass protection has been a joke and even when Rodgers does have time, he ends up throwing one of his patented ¾ sidearm throws that don’t find the intended target.

After Detroit went to the half with an 8-0 lead, I said, “That was the worst half of football that I’ve ever seen.” The Packers have two solid running backs, they have a very good quarterback and they have a solid tight end. There’s no reason why the Packers cannot close out drives against the worst defense in football. (It also helps to kick the field goal and take your points early.)

This team is so afraid of so many things. It’s afraid to make its first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback upset. It’s afraid to trust its once-dependable offensive line to pick up some goal line yards. It’s afraid to count on a wideout that he may be in the right spot at the right time. It’s afraid that the best receiver on the team is its No. 1 running back.

This team needs to stop worrying about teammates’ feelings and be honest. Green Bay still has a fighting chance for a playoff berth. That may seem like Christmas in July, but remember that if anybody is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat, it’s going to be the guy that has completed three Hail Marys. (Let’s just hope he doesn’t throw the ball in the dirt.)

It’s a team with no heart and a coaching staff that obviously was carried by the QB for three years.
From theGM down they need to clean house and start the rebuild.

Been saying it for 2 years. MLF is the problem.
I understood drafting Love. They seem to be wrong but AR was showing a decline. (This current decline is much worse).
I understood strengthening the D (though in modern football, maybe not) over getting another top WR.
I understood signing AR again. Who could have expected this drop off in performance? (I understood the flipside too)

But MLF has continually showed inability to get to the next level, to stick to the run game as he said he would, to get his team prep'ed, etc.

All been said before. This fall has been too steep to fathom. But we are here and it will probably be a few years until we even start to climb out of it. CheeseheadTV site will suffer for this too. I'm not going to be posting much and I'm not going to be glued to the screen just to watch them fail.

My hunch is that the players on the Packers fear speaking out against arrogant and temperamental Aaron Rodgers, a petty tyrant who diminishes teammates and exalts himself.
No good can come of this egotistic version of Rodgers and anyone in the front office who enables him.
Until they are removed, the Packers are an exercise in futility.

My concern is that a bored and directionless Rodgers checked out of the Packers about the time he was putting the team in Jeopardy before the 2021 season with a prolonged holdout that seemed to have no real reason.
All of the external fame and money and awards haven't been able to soothe the angst and ennui within, not even a controversial trip with an exotic hallucinogenic drug.
***
I've been remembering what a huge fan of Rodgers I've been over the years until recently, although I'm still rooting for him all the way. I'm actually concerned about his inner well-being. He may be truly miserable and in need of real friendship.
However, it does no good to him or anyone else to enable Rodgers to drag down others into his midlife crisis, including the Packers and their fans. Enabling another in self-destructive habits is harmful to all around.
May we can do what we can to lift up Rodgers, including genuine prayer, but without his cooperation we may need to trade him away or put him on the sidelines, at least temporarily. It seems this should happen now.
***
I want to remember the Rodgers of the good days.
It would be wonderful if he could leave the Packers on a high note, but he seems determined to continually make decisions for sour notes that are the likely cause of painful discord. He is flailing away out of tune and out of rhythm, and it's an awful noise.
I fear the dreadful conduct of Rodgers is causing ruin to an entire team on offense and defense and special teams, even the coaches and executives and other staff.
We need a clear trumpet to rally the people of the Packers, and to send a positive signal to the fans.
Is there anyone with the character to sound such an alarm, with a clarion call for unity and effort and focus in a spirit of camaraderie?
***
The Lombardi Packers set the tone for teamwork (see the late Dick Schaap's commentary in "Distant Replay") that reverberates across the decades as the highest standard for common glory in the history of the NFL.
Laugh at it if you will, but it's a legend that happens to be true with lessons that are transcendent.
We most urgently need to get that back.

At least one other fan at CHTV has chided me for having an obsession with Bart Starr, for whatever that is worth as perspective.
Growing up many years ago outside of Philadelphia and then outside of Chicago, it seemed my late father was puzzled by my devotion to the Packers in general.
After all, he had grown up in Milwaukee, but I had left Wisconsin at the age of three (although we visited family on vacation, including my mom's side in Cedarburg). Yet, I was much more enthusiastic about the Packers than he was; although being born in 1962, I was too young to have been interested in, even aware of, the glory of the Lombardi Era in real time.
In the mostly lean years of the 1970s and 1980s, into adulthood, I tenaciously clung to the Packers even though my friends rooted for the local team, and even teased me with gusto. I survived the Super Bowl Shuffle of the Ditka Bears with my integrity as a Packers fan intact.
***
I tend to be an idealist. My favorite movie is, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," which says with artistic eloquence that lost causes are the ones most worth fighting for -- because of one simple rule: Love thy neighbor.
In college, I was president of the pro-life group on campus, which is considered conservative; however, I also had an internship as a community organizer in a rough neighborhood of Chicago (a little before a young Barack Obama came to town for such a job), which is considered radical. It seemed to me both endeavors were about helping people, and I consider myself an independent (perhaps a conservative radical).
Rebecca, you may pity for me for being an idealist. Like the title character from the aforementioned movie, I've had some hard knocks as an idealist against the rot of this at times scornful and brutal world.
My own brother just defriended me on Facebook for expressing viewpoints on current society that he considers shameful speech. Once, my dad hung up the phone on me for not being happy that President Obama was getting an honorary law degree from Notre Dame, an event which seemed to me a travesty and a tragedy.
It may be that part of the reason I stress character so much in my comments even about the Packers is that I'm trying to keep myself from losing my idealism.
I hope I never do. A man of unique greatness once told his followers to be as wise as serpents, yet to remain as innocent as doves.
As much as I may fall short of my ideals in practice -- being both flawed and faulty -- I hope I never stop striving for a high level of goodness.
I hope I never stop fighting for the lost causes, including the Green Bay Packers, a cause which I do esteem as significant as part of the heritage of Wisconsin and even the history of the United States. We could use more of the old Packers way in this country.
It may be that as fans we get the football team we deserve: If we demand character as well as talent, we're more likely to get both; if not, we deserve neither.
***
In any case, Rebecca, thanks for your concern. Maybe this explanation will help to provide understanding for my eccentricity to you and others. All the best to you and all here at CHTV.

It's actually what Rodgers is doing with the team that I've been focused on all along, not his personal life -- and I think that's true of most of the fans here at CHTV.
I only brought up his personal life in the context of my theory that Rodgers is having some sort of personal crisis that is affecting his attitude with the team.
With all of his activities outside of football put together with his apparent toying with retirement from the game -- in any case, he has held us hostage the past two offseasons with whether or not he wanted to play for the Packers -- I think my theory is highly plausible.
It seems to me quite possible that Rodgers isn't really committed to football anymore, especially all of the intricate work that goes on behind the scenes to put together an offense with an illusion of complexity.
It's much easier to ad lib on the field and sling the football wherever he chooses.
***
Also, I don't think fans here at CHTV are showing hatred toward Rodgers, rather justified anger at his apparent attitude of arrogance that seems to interfere inappropriately with coaching and personnel decisions.
Then there's Rodgers seeming to be cranky toward his teammates, and remote.
His increasing weirdness adds to the appearance of Rodgers being in his own little world and not being a real leader for the Packers these days.
I think fans want the best for Rodgers, but it doesn't help him for anyone to indulge his ego and enable him in bringing down the Packers into dysfunction and defeat.
If the man showed some measure of real change in agreeability and coachability, I think fans would still rally to him.
I would. I think he still has enough talent, if only he would show some genuine humility and renewed enthusiasm.

I liked Rodgers as a player IN THE PAST but I do agree that the back to back MVPs have turned him into an egotistical weirdo. In this version of AR12, he is not a leader. His facial expressions remind me of a spoiled child. NO LEADER throws his teammates under the bus. He should be encouraging young players to improve - not publicly criticizing them.

Paying him $50Mil a year was a HUGE MISTAKE. I suspect the rest of the NFL is now laughing at GB for this move...

It's almost as if the #12 we saw on Sunday was the #12 who has finally realized that he can't just "turn it on" anymore. The frustration, the outbursts, the sulking on the sidelines: I think he just confronted his own football mortality for the first time.

I had that thought. A lot of that game also reminded me of the Championship games when he was trying to pull I’d back single handed. Rodgers seems to have essentially been doing what he wanted all game. It was better and braver than LaFleur’s offenses outside of the red zone, but ultimately as futile as prior must win losses. It just emphasizes that LaFleur is not a leader and a hindrance not a help. A HC who abdicated when it matters is a fraud and lacks the guts or belief as well as the tactical vision.

In a favorite scene from one of my favorite movies, "Hoosiers" -- being a slightly recovered hoopaholic, hence my nickname of Swisch, or Swischer, from high school, which was more from my enthusiasm (and as a derivative of my last name) than my ability -- the new basketball coach in a small town of Indiana astoundingly goes with only four players on the court, because the only other available player is being insubordinate, gaining cheers from the crowd but undermining the coach.
Eventually, coach Norman Dale as the stubborn outsider is almost run out of town in the midst of his first season.
The movie illustrates the need of talent for success, but also character to be a true winner.

"This team needs to stop worrying about teammates’ feelings and be honest. Green Bay still has a fighting chance for a playoff berth."

Huh? What??

Cory, you know I enjoy the articles written by EVERYONE here on CHTV and I'm never one to be critical of the content on a FREE Packers site (though I could do without Nagler's 21 minute long Gut Reactions) but now YOU'RE afraid to admit the Packers have NO SHOT at making the playoffs.

Mathmatically, I understand there's a way, but it will be a matter of a few games before that's over too. Gary's season is over as is Stokes I'd imagine. Doubs is out 4-6 and Watson should just be shutdown. If EVER there was a team that cooked, done, and OUT of the Playoffs it's the 2022 Green Bay Packers.

Dallas is going to smash the Packers as will the Eagles. With this O-Line I can only imagine what MM and Dan Quinn will do to Rodgers. McCarthy, I'm sure he remembers Rodgers was a huge part of the reason he was fired in mid-season, thrown out like a Detroit Lions HC who never won anything. Hey, it was time for MM to go, but on THAT team, it could have waited until the end of the season. At least IMO. Maybe Mike is a bigger man than me, but I'd want to inflict as much of a beating on Rodgers as I could. AND the Dallas D is no joke.

He was a class act on his way out. A lot of us, myself included, might have been bitter in that situation, but he never showed it.

As for the game, McCarthy is probably more concerned about setting his team up for a run in the playoffs than embarrassing Rodgers or Murphy. I don’t think he’d admit to wanting to give the Packers a drubbing. “We were able to keep our pad level right and things just went our way.”

MM had become stale and was in a rut, but he was also faced with a FO run by Russ Ball in reality that had drafted badly and retained worse. The roster was full of holes and he and Rodgers were apparently at loggerheads and MM seems to have lost already in retrospect and perhaps killed his very public attempt to wholly revise his O. In addition he was shaken by the loss of his brother, which has to be an understandable issue if focus in there.

I felt at the time that MM had to go, that he and we needed to reset. Looking back, that looks like it should have happened the previous off season or not at all. I did feel he was to some extent being made a scapegoat by Murphy for letting Ball audition as GM, I just felt he had run out of steam . Looking back it seems likely that I underestimated Rodgers influence.

MM was a good guy who was a very innovative coach in his early part of his reign. He was a big factor in Rodgers ascension too. I now look back and wonder how much if it was him getting set in his ways and unchanging and how much was Rodgers asserting his desires. I suppose we will never know. I do know that I’d rather have him in the sidelines than Murphy’s hand picked successor. I did not think his successor would be less capable of addressing failed coaching than MM.

I agree with all that. I underestimated him early on, but his stewardship of the team during the Super Bowl run was superb. He obviously knew what he was doing.

My guess is that Rodgers stopped responding to him and that motivated him to head to the massage table.

If the O-line can work together as a unit for a whole game (heck, a whole practice) they might be able to resemble a descent front.

If the D-line can start to get consistent and rotate effectively to stay fresh, it would be a great help.

If the two lines above, don't happen it won't matter what else happens. It won't matter how many yards we run, pass or how many we give up. We won't score, get a yard or a stuff when we need it.

And perhaps no pressure without Rodgers and a new starter. A young guy might see the chance to shape his roster, develop a QB and be ready to hit hard when the cap lifts. He should have a free hand in coaching hires. Of course that kind of hire is a risk it’s pretty clear Murphy flubbed last time.

They keep moving everyone around all the time. Bak is put in and taken out and put in and taken out. Until the coaching staff decides to shut down Bak and keep players at the same spots for 2 or 3 games, this line will continue to have no continuity.

I hope someone important didnt put a 50 year curse on the Packers and its starting now? All I can say is the problem is money plain and simple. Ravens new acquisition Roquan Smith had two sacks and three hurries last night in his debut. Now they are talking Beckum to add something to the passing game.
They have the money. They and other teams can do this because they managed their money and the GM knew how to do contracts.
You've got a team forced to use 4,5,6,7th round picks as starters now. Other teams those are emergengy back ups learning as they are needed.
Every year we lose two three four starters who we have to let go due to lack of money because three guys are getting it all: Rodgers, Bak and Jairre. Right now none of them are worth half of what were paying them.
This team for years led the league with the most injuries for the simple reason tt and Gutt never paid attention to their injury records and these guys were at the end of round 1 or round 2 because of it and we called it a steel. Watson, string bean who will never amount to anything. But he's cheap right now.
Until this team sheds Rodgers money and can start spreading around to others, were going nowhere fast.

Speaking of fear, where is our illustrious GM? Why isn’t he talking to the media and “owners “ about the trade deadline and what steps they might take to fix this thing? I seem to remember that when he was hired he was telling everyone he was going to be open and media friendly, not sullen and secretive like the Ted Thompson regime. So where is he? Sitting in his Fortress of Solitude at 1265 Lombardi hiding while LaFleur takes all the lumps. Talk about fear. Oh, he will talk at his NFL-mandated end of season press conference, he has to. When he is forced to speak, I imagine we’ll hear the same cocky, snotty non-answers we used to hear from his mentor . The acorn doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

Here is what I would like to see happen:

1. Cut departing veterans (Watkins, Lowry) and play the young guys. Toure, Watson, and Amari (I would like to see what he could do more in the passing game) Wyatt, TJ Slaton, Jack Heflin, and Enagbare, and of course, bench Rodgers and play Love for the remainder of the season. We need to see if he’s the guy. Lazard I hope gets signed to a long-term deal; he's earned it. Playing the young people will give them good experience, but playing inexperienced players will also increase our draft position. Tonyan I would like to see stick around for a few more years but, in all likeliness, he will leave next yearStill, I legitimately don't know if we win another game this season

2. Clean out the FO. Everyone, specifically, Joe Barry, Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst, Russ Ball, and especially Mark Murphy need to go. The descision to extend Rodgers was a bone-headed move when we could've gotten great players (like Drew Lock, lol) and a lifetime jackpot of draft picks in exchange for him. It is now more evident than ever that MLF and Barry are clueless morons who have only been riding in the coattails of Rodgers and Davante Adams. Gutey has whiffed on so many draft picks over the last couple of years, and Murphy is the root of all the problems. I hope the board of directors have some good ideas of candidates to be the new owner.
Steno I would put back as o-line coach. The results haven't been great, and the unit clearly misses him.

3. Hire New Coaches, Owner, and GM. Here are some of my favorite potential candidates: HC: Shane Steichen, Eagles OC, Ejiro Evero, Broncos DC, Dan Quinn, Cowboys DC, Shane Bowen, Titans DC, Ken Dorsey, Bills OC. OC: Frank Reich, former Colts HC, Nathaniel Hackett, current Broncos HC (if he gets fired, which there’s a decent chance of), Troy Walters, Bengals WRs coach, Brian Johnson, Eagles QB Coach, Tony Dews, Titans RBs coach. DC: Mike Smith, Vikings (and former Packers) OLB coach, Titans OLBs coach Ryan Crow, Broncos DBs coach Christian Parker, Patriots CBs coach Mike Pelligrino, 49ers LBs coach Johnny Holland, Titans DL coach Terrell Williams. Bissacia is the only keeper for me. My preference would be to hire Ejiro Evero as HC and Frank Reich (Brian Johnson) as OC. I will explain more in other posts.

4. Trade everyone possible. This will do some to solve the cap situation while also getting more good draft capital. Bakh, Aaron Jones, and Preston Smith are the players who we could probably get the most for.

5. Extend Cautiously. I would like to see Jenkins be extended as a Guard long-term, but Gary should only receive a “test” extension (for about 2 years) so we can ensure he can consistently play well after he returns from his ACL injury.

6. Draft Wisely. We will likely have high picks so this is even more important. Choose players that have high upside but also good current skillsets and not solely on athletic potential but also on football smarts and other fundamentals (tackling, catching) and whether it is reasonable to assume that these issues can be worked out. Vice versa as well.

Hopefully the rebuild is quick and we are contending again! GPG!

When Rodgers is talking about retirement, you know he wants to go. He will still get the money, and at this rate, he won't earn a lot of incentives. He looks like he hates his team.

I'm afraid I actually agree with your takes Corey.

Thats a lot of fear...

The dysfunction all stems from the fear that Murphy put into his football operations team - all of them - from gutey to ball to mlf.

MMs power grab totally screwed the "chain of command' necessary for a functional football operation to succeed.

Murphy needs to be put out to pasture before his mandatory retirement date.
A competent gm needs to be installed - may he already be there?
The gm needs to choose his coach and then let that coach make his own staff hires.

That would be a beginning to allowing the future to develop in a positive direction.

There is my view of FANTASY LAND because there is absolutely NO CHANCE IN HELL that will happen in Green bay Wisconsin.

speaking of chain of command, the absolutely STUPID decisions that allow Rodgers to have his whiney narcissistic attitude to be brought into any conversations beyond talking through the game plan assigned to him by his OC and HC is ITEM 1B interms of what has crippled this team.

Coaches gotta coach

Players gotta play

Period.

When that gets screwed up you are a losing team

Period.

Sometimes Team Presidents suck...

Sometimes GM make exactly the wrong decisions...

Sometimes QBs get old and forget how to step into throws...

Sometimes DC really suck and can't put their players in a position to succeed...

Sometimes HC are really out of their element unless everything is going perfectly...

Ultimately, when the President let’s Ball run the FO surreptitiously for 3 years then finally has to face up to reality and anoints himself as the savior, questions should have been asked.

When the President then revamps the structure to make himself central to everything by having Coach, GM and contracts all report to him, he shapes the team and it’s culture.and assumes responsibility. When he then personally chooses, mid process, the HC with a vision to modernize the team and that team still resembles the one before, is clearly tactically deficient and can’t win with the roster built for it, that President should be done.

When that President presided over one roster direction consistently followed and then ignored it and has the team sell out control to its QB despite having no cap and the weakest skill players in years and the always likely result ensues it’s too late as the team is now competitively disadvantaged for seasons after the collapse.

Until Murphy goes we will likely not get a good GM. No GM worth their salt would be without final say in players or contracts or HC. They certainly can’t function if a QB and contract is entered into that goes directly counter to all that they have been doing. It’s farcical. Until LaFleur goes we won’t get good coaches. We have seen what he and Murphy hire and how they manage.

This organization needs a cleanse from the top down. The President must be replaced, the role redefined back to the Harlen model. The de facto czar of football cannot be the most senior executive and cannot be the guy who controls nominations to the board and executive committee. That’s just fundamental good organizational governance, particularly in a publicly owned corporation. The Board members should take a long hard look at themselves for approving that and I think it’s time for a clear out of a group who should know better.

This organization needs a thorough and deep cleanse, the signs of organizational sickness are everywhere on the football side, and that’s why the Packers exist and what makes the other operations relevant.

The only football move the new President should directly involve him or herself in is the hiring of the new GM. Given that we will need that person in place after our season ends I. December, that search needs to start now. The articles of the Packers need to be changed to ensure that the President never again has ongoing control of the football side, only oversight set out and defined.

That’s on the Board, and failure to act should be held against each and every member. Get their names out there and known. Let’s remind them that it’s not just a sinecure, it comes with real fiduciary and moral obligations to preserve the health of the Packers for its owners, most particularly given that the latter are neutered, and that goes beyond real estate profit. Indeed much of that depends on it in the longer term.

It’s an assemblage of local notables: an exclusive club not necessarily obviously driven by real personal investment in the franchise or game. Murphy as President nominated members for a smaller executive committee that meets once a month. I’m not aware of one being rejected.

The seven-member Executive Committee of the Green Bay Packers presently is:

Karl A. Schmidt, Member;
Daniel T. Ariens, Secretary;
Mark H. Murphy, President;
Donald J. Long Jr., Member;
Michael D. Simmer, Treasurer;
Susan M. Finco, Vice President and Lead Director;
Marcia M. Anderson, Member.

Finco founded a Green Bay PR company and has certainly leveraged her 21 years in the board to obtain other directorships based on press releases out there. She’s arguably the second most powerful person in Lambeau. Ever heard of her?

CW, I have heard of her, but only because I Googled Executive Committee membership last season and found it interesting that someone with a PR background sat on the EC.

Succession planning would be within the role of the EC , correct? At a minimum, MM has presented said plans to the EC with his departure looming in 2025. There should be a process in place for transfer of leadership, with individuals identified within and outside the organization. The EC and 40+ other members have been nodding and smiling on que for years. If the house is to be cleaned from the top down, who amongst that group provides learned stewardship?

What do we know of the mechanics of the process? Say by some stroke of magic MM is relieved of his duties. I mean, I understand if we had an owner we could just appoint Gilbert Brown President, but what happens with this collection of business owners, lawyers and marketing execs?

A majority of a board where none hold voting stock is essentially a simple majority of members. If that existed, to be formally adopted, it would require a meeting to be called to ratify it, but often, if the majority is clear then the procedure begins.

I would expect a move to spend more time with his family would be announced. In other words Murphy would be told there’s a majority and would agree to resign/retire before that resolution is officially written into the records. These processes can be very fast, once a board gets fired up and a majority emerges. That can take a long time or never happen at all though.

I disagree. I would not take a Wr this draft early. The packers will draft a TE before Wr. Plan on 2. The packers need to go Defense. Their run defense stinks. Pettine left because they didn't finish drafting the defense. Gutey either drafts defense or Barry will go.

Gary will not be ready until next Thanksgiving, # one. Pass rush. A premier TE controls the Red Zone and gets the third down conversions. The OT was needed this year to secure one of the flanks. The musical chairs along the O line has led to chaos upfront.

Not a WR that early. If we are at no. 9 I would take TE Michael Mayer. He could be the next Gronk, and the Packers have been devoid at TE for many years.

I however, think we'll be picking at no. 3 overall. I have a hard time seeing us win any game except maybe Lions at Lambeau. I would select Will Anderson Jr. Preston Smith should be traded after the season and he is a generational EDGE prospect. Him and Gary would strike fear into every offensive line in the league

Just stop the divide and conquer. It's not fear. It's Timing! So just stop the crying. Nobody is feeling sorry for us. We still have a lot of talent. But IMO- The pieces must be moved to come gather. Move Douglass back outside. Where he was more effective. If the plan is to play him at safety. Move him there. It's time to change the DL. Clarke, Slaton and Wyatt! And the next game will tell the story on the OL. The packers can't sit anyone. If Watson gets his Bell rung, so be it. He must learn that the NFL loves to put Packers out of commission. This whole season was to hurt Rodgers, and his passing game. And LeFluer threw gas on the fire. Rodgers thumb is No different than Farve's was. He will sit himself when the time comes. But the insubordination must stop. Lambeau isn't Fairy Land. And it's time to dish it out! Instead of taking the dirty play from are opponents.

Stockholder based on what we have seen this season, do you realistically expect this team to turnaround?

They beat themselves in numerous ways every single game. Bad coaching, poor preparation, misuse of players, stupid penalties, and missed assignments on both sides of the ball. Now add in that the injuries are piling up and our depth is not great which will probably lead to more mistakes. Worst of all Rodgers is making bad decisions with the football. He has been exceptional in his on field decision making for his entire career until this season. His mechanics, particularly his footwork, are bad and exacerbating his thumb injury.

Taken individually any of these issues can be corrected with good coaching but when they are all happening simultaneously week after week it's not going to change quickly. Can the Packers pull off an upset? Of course they can but they self-destruct before they can make it happen. If the other team self-destructs worse than the Packers it might happen. But I'm not seeing teams with worse coaching than the Packers on our schedule. Even in losing the Bears are playing better football than the Packers.

Rodgers is actually on track to throw the most interceptions than any season in his entire career. He needs to sit out at least a week, probably 2 or 3 and let his thumb heal. He needs to work on his footwork as well. Beyond that this team is not as good as previous teams to go on a playoff run. They don't have the OL or the receivers. Now with Gary and Stokes down they don't have the defense either. As for dishing it out when they do that they get penalized.

You mentioned Watson, IMO he should not play again for a few weeks at least. He probably should not play again this season. We're talking about a player's life at this point. I hope that the Packers have not reached the point where they are willing to put a player on the field who is not fully recovered from multiple concussions.
It's one thing to be stupid, another to be criminal.

This is the season to stabilize the team, play out the string and decide who can be traded and who should be released. Numerous vets will be gone and some of our players with big cap hits should be traded if possible. The sooner the Packers begin their recovery the sooner they will get through it. Time to take the losses and cut bait.

"This is the season to stabilize the team, play out the string and decide who can be traded and who should be released. Numerous vets will be gone and some of our players with big cap hits should be traded if possible"

61, that's on target. It's where we are. I would caution people about throwing out the baby with the bath water, since we have to put a team on the field and every guy who leaves or who gets cut or traded is going to need to be replaced, and we only have 7 draft picks and not much FA money, so we'll be loading up a roster with UDFAs.

We don't have the luxury of getting rid of a cheap player just because he's "not good enough".

Guys still on their rookie deal next year: Love, Dillon, Hill, Deguara, Watson, Doubs, Toure, Amari Rodgers, Runyan, Newman, Myers, Tom, Rhyan. That's 13. Add in maybe Walker, or Caleb Jones, but we still need to add at least 6 guys.

On defense, Lowry will leave in FA. Probably Amos, too. I think pretty much everybody else is under contract for next year.

Just saying, we're going to have enough holes to fill without creating more than we need to.

I understand where you're coming from. 1. The OL hurt Rodgers the most. 2. He then threw long to create space. 3. The red Zone was the failure. But let me add something here. I believe Rodgers is ignoring his open Wrs. And sticking to the play calling in The Red Zone. He's making sure his comments are Fact. The play calling sucks. 4. The Rookie Wrs must play like Vets. There is No better time for development. Live action is where its at. 5. You can't cut bait until you see who performs. The veterans on the DL will get a free pass. And they shouldn't.
The team can, but won't crawl back into this , after the injuries in Detroit. This team needs to get on the same page again. Even with a bad thumb. Rodgers is better than most. The Home games will be how to judge the players.
If Rodgers sits. He's done as a packer.

I agree stockholder. The OL has not only hurt Rodgers but the run game as well and as a consequence the entire team has suffered from the poor execution on offense. Yes, Rodgers is either ignoring or not seeing his one receivers on some plays. It may be that they are not in the spots where he expects them to be even if they are open. In any case there is obviously a disconnect.

It will be interesting to see if Rodgers can play 2 games in 4 days with his injured thumb. If he does I don't think that it will be very pretty on TNF.

If the Packers don't show up for these next 2 home games we'll know that the coaching staff has lost the team.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually feel we have a pretty decent roster of players. This is basically, minus Adams, the same team that won 13 games last year. I could understand a drop-off to a certain degree, especially with the injuries, but going from one of a handful of teams picked to compete for a Super Bowl berth to a team that looks like it'll be lucky to win one or two more games this year and end up as one of the worst teams in the league is difficult for me to fathom. Again, with basically the same roster that won 13 games last year.

I think 90% of this falls on coaching...period. We lost a total of 4 coaches from last years staff. That has to have had an effect. And what we have now is:

An ILB coach masquerading as a DC.
An OL coach masquerading as an OC.
An OC masquerading as a HC.
An OL coach who seems to be in over his head.

I've never been one of these "FIRE EVERYBODY" guys the minute something goes wrong. But I do believe this coaching staff needs a MAJOR overhaul. I truly believe a competent coaching staff could get this group of players competitive again.

Just my $.02

We need a new HC. Ejiro Evero would be my preference. The Packers have had offensive HCs for so long, and Evero (Broncos DC) would bring fresh ideas. Unlike Barry, Evero bases his defensive scheme to maximize his players' skill sets and makes good halftime adjustments. His unit is the second-best in the league, which is even more impressive when you consider that their offense is dogcrap (putting all of the stress on his unit).

As for OC, I would like to see the Packers go and get either Eagles OC Brian Johnson or former Colts head coach Frank Reich. Johnson because he may have a Luke-Getsy like effect with Love's development - a former QBs coach for a really successful young QB who knows how to design offense to bring out what he does best. This would help Love a lot. Reich because of what he was able to do with Foles in the SB and with Rivers, Wentz, and all of these washed up QBs. We are seeing how bad Wentz is in Washington without Reich's mentorship, and he actually had a decent season in Indy. Ryan is just too old, period, and their offensive line sucks this year. He still is a good coach.

Keep Bisaccia as ST coordinator. It's too early to judge, and there has been improvement

The failure of this team starts at the very TOP - ownership and directors. Whether its fear or sheer stupidity / ignorance that drives all the GB directors (especially Mark Murphy), CHANGE MUST START AT THE TOP! This team does not need 43 directors. How many of them actually know anything about football? Its becoming evident that the President they have selected has FAILED! If the Packers were their own business, would they allow this travesty of an organization continue in this way? They would not. They would FIRE the President asap and get on with improving their business.

He's been writing the same thing since they signed Rodgers.

Since the structure was changed, actually, and warning that it could end up like this eventually, though I didn’t see it happening in 5 years.

Some numbers. Cutting Bakhtiari would mean the Packers carry approximately $23 million in dead cap next year. If Rodgers retires, he'd add $68 million. Now, starting with those numbers, build a competitive team. Jordan Love is going into his fifth year, while Rashan Gary is going into his fourth year. And Aaron Jones, their most reliable and best offensive weapon, is going to be owed $20 million next year. In the case of Love, the Packers have to find out if they have a serviceable QB, or if they have to join the ranks of teams that struggle, year after year, to find a decent signal caller. And this just scratches the surface. If Love is designated to start a game or two, will LaFleur and OC Stenavich design a game plan to play to his strengths, or simply plug him in and give him the "Rodgers playbook"? Is it time to clean house on the coaching staff, hire a HC who can motivate the players, a DC who can properly utilize the talent on the team, and an OC who can actually make adjustments as the game progresses? This would mean paying guys more money, something the Packers have been loath to do the past few years. So, they bring in a revolving lineup of DC's (in particular), who are not worthy of their positions. But, they are cheaper than the truly good DC's. As far as the OC goes, it seems that Stenavich is in over his head, similar to Drayton. Who agreed to these hires? Because whoever it is, obviously is not a good judge of coaching talent.

so Rodgers was the MVP last year and completely forgot how to play football in a few months ? this is a coaching failure on all levels not a Rodgers issue, this team has talent but the coaching staff does not know how to use it, I always felt Dillon is overrated, cant buy a yard when its needed , but like I have been saying , no owner no changes.

If we're going to add coaching failures that includes Rodgers' hand-picked QB coach, right?

There is probably nothing more cluelessly fanboyish than the follow-the-leader pitchfork crowd that gathers with their torches as soon as their previously great team experiences a shitty season. Apparently some people haven’t been around sports long enough to realize that a team isn’t going to win every single year, and then their brains lock up and they don’t know what to do as soon as there is a losing season.

To be honest, I don’t particularly like Mark Murphy. I think it might be good for him to ride off into the sunset. But the amount of stupid vitriol certain uninformed posters are lobbing at him is pretty comical. I may not really like him, but at least I have enough self-awareness to realize that Murphy has forgotten more football knowledge than the combined knowledge of every poster on this board. Eight year NFL veteran, first team all-pro, pro bowler, NFL interception leader in 1983, superbowl champion, athletic director at Colgate and Northwestern Universities and the man who presided over the Packers Super bowl winning team in 2010, not to mention the holder of a Masters in Business Administration and a Doctor of Laws degree. During his tenure in Green Bay from 2008 until 2021 Murphy’s teams won more games (145) than any other team except New England, and only New England has won more superbowls during that time.

Oh, but Billy Joe Jim Bob on the internet thinks Murphy doesn’t know anything about football and insists on calling him “Howdy Doody.” LOL.

OK. Got it.

Keyboard commando's now taking on the roll of GM for the Packers...that would be hilarious if it were real life..they know everything and they know exactly whats good or not for the Packers...seems like a losing streak brings out the worst in a few...cant handle it...hell, half the NFL looks as crappy as the Packers...did you catch the amazing offense that New Orleans has!! Now that was baaaad...

The irony of your post is that you don’t see yourself doing exactly the same except favoring inaction. If that’s the most developed argument or solution you can articulate then so be it, but it’s probably best not to boast about that.

Who is "finding excuses" for anything? Did I say something to excuse poor performance?

And when you talk about "lemmings [who] too proudly follow a leader" do you mean the lemmings who follow what Mark Murphy thinks? Or do you mean the ones who follow what you think? Just curious.

Hey Cory. You might remember from my Twitter days. Left that phucking cesspool. In any event, nobody, and I mean nobody has brought up 12’s QB Coach/Therapist/, Tom Clements. He was clearly brought back to appease 12 (as usual) with his guy. At one point, yes, he was an integral part of 12’s success. Being out of the game for even 2 years, he clearly hasn’t been able to resurrect his former pupil. TC clearly needs to get back into retirement imo. But…as always..GPG! 👊👍✌️🏈

We fans are not always right, but sometimes we are. Our eyes can see some glaring problems that coaching and management refuse to see.
Quay Walker should not be starting. He is constantly out of position and slow to react.
Defensive coordinator should be replaced with someone that will use the ability of our secondary to play much more man to man coverage.
Sammy Watkins should not be starting. Amari Rodgers should not be starting.
Our head coach is grossly overrated. The 39-10 record of his first three years was greatly aided by playing Lions and Bears 12 times. Also, i went back and looked at the teams that made up the 39 wins and there were very few teams with winning records at the time they played us.
Our qb needs to play within the system or he should be benched. What do you think Bill Belichik would do with number 12???
This team needs a huge dose of truth serum...........

I guess your keen, insightful eyes somehow failed to notice that Amari Rodgers obviously hasn't started a game all year, and only started one in his entire career, and that was only because Adams and Lazard were out with covid (28 Oct 2021 vs Arizona).

But I bet those stupid coaches knew that Rodgers wasn't starting...
