Cory's Corner: There's Nothing Wrong With Boring

The Packers have proven that boring wins consistently.

The Packers have typically been a boring franchise when it comes to the draft. Going back to 2010, the Packers have taken an offensive or defensive linemen five times.

I don’t have a problem with boring. Heck, I welcome boring. I would rather have boring than a guy that was drafted just to be a billboard or headline pleaser.

The Packers have won the NFC North the last two years, have gone 26-6 in the regular season in that stretch. and have advanced to the NFC title game in each of those seasons.

You could make an argument that the Coach of the Year worked in Green Bay the last two years. What Matt LaFleur has done in his first two seasons as a head coach is nothing short of amazing.

But it all comes back to boring. The Packers don’t make a lot of wild and crazy free agent additions. The trio of Adrian Amos, Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith a couple years ago were the best collection of free agent talent at one time in a long time in Green Bay.

The Packers will likely take Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins in the first round. Jenkins isn’t going to move the national needle for draft pundits, but it would fill a desperate hole after Corey Linsley and Lane Taylor left for the Chargers and Texans. Not to mention, we don’t know when left tackle David Bakhtiari will be back, but it probably won’t be before October. The Packers will need some depth to protect the team’s most important player to start the season.

Will people get upset? Sure. There are people that want the glitzy pick. But that’s more of a description of the Cowboys, not the Packers. Dallas owner Jerry Jones is like a moth to a flame for blockbuster guys that sell the draft day grade. Be happy that the Packers handle things 180-degrees differently when it comes to the draft.

The Packers are the smallest media market in all of sports and many tab them as boring for taking the sure thing.

If winning consistently is boring, then let me be the first one to yawn. The Packers know and understand that flash doesn’t work in the NFL — consistency does.

From 2000-2010, the Packers were second in the NFL with a 102-56-2 record including a Super Bowl title and eight playoff appearances. Minnesota, Chicago and Detroit combined for nine playoff appearances during that span.

The NFL Draft is a time that usually brings out the worst in fans. But most of them are just coveting the shiny object.

The Packers are boring and that’s fine with me.

What position GB goes for in round 1 will be determined by how the board falls.

OT is a candidate due to the number of qualified candidates available around the 29 spot and the possibility of a falling talent.

I see CB as the other position with value at the 29 spot with the possibility of a falling talent.

I do not see any other position working for spot 29 meeting at the corner of value and need. No single position screams either since the Packers needs coincide with draft depth this year so a selection later might yield a similar value-need opportunity at OT or CB/DB.

Please for the love of God do not waste middle round picks by sacrificing them in a trade up deal this year.

I like the Packers historical ability to get good OL later in the draft, that gives me comfort that the needs will be met even if round 1 doesnt fill the immediate needs that are apparent, this shifts my focus to CB/DB with all things being equal.

Rounds 2-3-4/4 can be used for WR and best available.

I see 2 WR coming to town as well as 2 OT and 2CB/DB in the 10 picks GB has. Include 1 RB and perhaps a flyer on a DL and that pretty much rounds out the dance card leaving a couple selections for BPA.

One of my draft crushes is OT James Hudson, especially if GB does not get a 1st or 2nd round OT and he is available at our #3 pick.

I'm good with boring. It's alright by me if the Packers stay at their current draft positions and start out with some combination of DL, CB, OL, and ILB. It's okay if they don't take a quick and agile and fast slot receiver until a later round.
From what I've read here at CHTV from the staff and the fans, this seems a very good way to go. We should get a lot of good players, and perhaps a couple or more can contribute significantly this season.
However, I also am good with exciting. If there's a slot receiver that seems extra special, maybe we take him in the first round. Maybe we do something daring and risky and perhaps highly rewarding.
It seems like a lot of fans wanted a receiver in the first round last year. Are those same people against it for this year? What's the story?
If we do pick a receiver first, why pick another tall guy when we have so many already? Why not try for a Tyreek Hill, Antonio Bryant, Cole Beasley, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Steve Smith, DeSean Jackson, Brandin Cooks, or Randall Cobb?
I haven't been convinced so far that these smaller guys get injured more often; but even if it's true, there are some impressive precedents for small guys making a big impact. A guy like this on the Packers could provide a big psychological boost for the players and fans (nothing wrong with that), and then some dazzling gameday bursts for huge gains on the field.
Again, I'm good with going boring in this draft. Really and truly. However, just maybe, the Packers do something different and original and creative and exciting -- not for the sake of doing something different, but because they are independent thinkers, perhaps forward thinkers, looking for a way to put us over the top.

Almost 30 years between Favre's first game and today and they have 2 SBs with 2 of the best QBs to ever play. Yes, they've won a lot of games but you play for championships.

Look what TB did this last off-season. Brought in Brady and then brought in guys he was comfortable with (i.e. Gronk and AB) and what happened? Same thing with KC, they watched their o-line get beat up in the SB so what did they do, went and brought in 3 new starters to protect their QB.

Boring is fine if total wins is what you're looking for but it'd be nice to see them swing for the fences every now and again, even if that means a few years here and there of mediocre football.

Ok you want to lose to get a higher pick?? - I like the excitement of playing in the playoffs. Reminder - since 1967 - Superbowls - Pats and Steelers - 6 wins - 49ers and cowboys 5 wins and we are tied with Giants with 4. And if you look at the teams other than the Pats - they all won several with previous great teams - Bradshaw, Montana Elway etc. So be realistic - I think that we wasted some good QB years . With #4 it was some bad defense as with AR - and these games can be decided by one play - 4th and forever against Phillie. But look at poor Brees and his heartbreak 2 years running.

It's a delicate balance. I like the fact that Packers give themselves a chance at winning a Superbowl year after year. You can't win one if you don't get in the dance.

I'll take consistent winning records and playoff appearances over the boom/bust cycle facing teams that are constantly mortgaging their futures in free agency. Where will Tampa be in a couple or a few years? Starting over, and facing a long road to get back in the playoffs. Meanwhile the Pack will continue to feed the pipeline with players that they draft and develop, and produce a consistent product.

You can't have it both ways, not with the salary cap and the monstrous contracts that MVP-caliber QBs are reaping.

Or you could choose the path the Vikings have taken for years - poor drafts, spending in free agency and still not giving themselves a shot at the big one.

The Packers brought in 4 starters in free agency 2 years ago. Last year they went looking for a starting middle lb and who they thought was a starting receiver who sat out. Only difference is the Super Bowl win. Your whole philosophy makes it seem like it's easy to win the Super Bowl. if you just "insert your pet move here" then they win the SB - easy.

My whole philosophy is get playmakers on the team that will help you get over the hump. If Funchess is your marquee signing and that missing piece then I don't know what to tell you.

One game away from the SB and these were their first 3 picks last year: QB, RB, TE/HB. Were any of those positions considered a weakness of the team or the reason they didn't make the SB?

They still haven't addressed the LB or DL problem other than bringing in Kirksley and Snacks Harrison and we saw how they worked out. Now LB spots are manned by a 5th rd pick and an undrafted free agent and the GM who is in charge of getting players says he needs more out of that group.

It's just frustrating to watch as a fan when you have two all time great QBs spanning 30 years and the Giants, Buccaneers, and Broncos have same amount of SB wins.

Do not trade any 2nd or 3rd or 4th round picks. This is a heavy draft class according to the EXPERTS - for CB OT and receivers. Trading up loses talent - with all the QB's going off the board early - some people say 5 others say 7 before we pick we will be getting a pretty good player at almost any position at 29. Would hate to give up a 2nd rounder on a hope and a prayer. And the higher you go up to get a generational player - if there is something like that in this draft other than the TE - the more capital you need to spend

That's your answer? What happened to the Bears when they moved up to take Mitch? Do your evaluation job - dont over-react. Take the guys who you will help you out. When you are down near 29 - you will kill your team by giving up too many high picks to move up to the top of the heap to get any supposed generational player and who is that other than the supposed best non QB guys - Pitts or Parson and will they get us over the top this upcoming year.

Cory, what a great statement. Flash does not work in the NFL, consistency does. Boring? 1968-1991 could not have been a more succinct and painfully true fact. The Packers are boring only in the respect that they do not get to draft flashy players, or go after FA glamor boys(Cowboys-Browns). They acquire talent that fits their needs and develops them. With the exception of Reggie White, the Pack has always been a draft & develop team, not a hyped up media flash in the pan addition.

The closer to the draft with the more I study the possibilities at pick 29, I bet we end up picking at 29. There should be DB, WR, OT, and my preference ILB talent waiting to be selected. The players I would most desire to be on the board @29 are in this order: Barmore, Farley, Koramoah, Darrisaw, Newsome, Moehrig, COLLINS, Oweh, Boltin, Asante Samuels, Cosmi, Terance Marshall, or Teven Jenkins.

I fear 5 CB's may be gone before 29 as well as Barmore. I see us hopefully getting to choose between OT, ILB, WR in that order of need at 29. As far as who the best player is on the board Thursday night, I hope we pick THAT PLAYER. The draft is not rocket science, or is it? Thursday night can not get here soon enough.

"The Packers are boring and that’s fine with me."

So, the first three years of BG at the wheel in the first round of the draft nets a big trade-down, getting an extra 1st, moving back up to nab a blue-chip CB. Then taking a 'controversial' DE/OLB early and trading up to get a S, the last year trading up to take a developmental QB with an HOF QB with a big contract in the fold.

Boring.

The draft as a process in and of itself is boring. But that is not the point. The point is to select players who can help the team win and to fill out the roster. I'm not sure that it's boring to take an OL or DL if that player evolves into a solid contributor or all-pro level player. Last season we took a QB with our 1st round pick and he has yet to put on the uniform. I'm not sure there is anything more boring than that.

For me the excitement comes in reviewing the selections and trying to picture the player helping the team either in the current season or down the road. Unless the team picks a Gale Sayers or a Bob Hayes they are all about the same to me. That's why I say wake me when it's over and I will futilely attempt to determine if the Packers have made good selections or not. Thanks, Since '61

They used to run 14 rounds in four hours or so . We would listen to the AM radio or read the results in the Journal the next day. Oh, by the way as a 5-6 year old I was a Braves guy, but also was glued to the Yankees as my #2 team, especially Roger Maris and Mickey.

The Milwaukee Braves had some great players in the late 50s, Hank Aaron, Eddie Matthews, Stan Musial, Warren Spahn. They split the '57 and '58 World Series with the Yankees. Braves won in '57 and the Yanks won in '58. Maris and Mickey put on quite a show in '61 until Mickey was injured and missed the last 3 weeks of the season.
Until '61 Mantle was the #3 hitter in the Yankees lineup. But he agreed to move down to #4, the clean up spot, so that Maris would get better pitches to hit. It certainly worked out well for the Yankees that year.

The 50s and 60s were the golden days of baseball while the 60s and 70s would become the golden days of the NFL.

Actually they would do 17 rounds in one day before the NFL expanded and went to 14 rounds. I would get the selections the next day in the NYC papers. I was a subscriber to the Packer report in those days and living in NYC it would eventually show up with more details on the Packers draft picks. I would also get Pro Football Weekly's annual draft report to review the picks. I guess that's why I still prefer reviewing the picks after they have been made rather than getting involved with all the pre-draft hype and speculation. Thanks, Since '61

Yes, I read the Sporting News but for the NFL in those days I enjoyed the fact that Pro Football Weekly was exclusively focused on the NFL. I knew that PFW would always include coverage of the Packers and pre-internet that was a crucial resource of Packers information. SN was a better resource for general sports reading and they did a great job with their baseball coverage.

It's kind of amazing how we have come to take for granted that we have access to the Packers or just about anything else on a 24/7 basis with the click of a keyboard or the tap of our phones.

"Stan The Man" played for the Cardinals. This was in the old days when many of the great stars of the game played for a single team during their career.

I was a Braves fan and was elated when got Red Schoendienst from the Giants to help win that World Series in 1957. That team was my all time favorite for baseball.

It was period in time when our Green Bay Packers were struggling and reached an all time low when Scooter McClean was the coach the year before Lombardi came to the rescue.

No one is fine and fucking dandy with cornerback play so bad it will go down in history bad. I have no idea who these people are that you think are fine with this.

The issue is what to do now going forward. The packers have an MVP qb, the best wr in football, a top rb, two all pro o linemen, several rushers that can get double digit sacks, a top cover corner and good safeties. The packers did not lose the NFCCG because of a lack of talent, they lost due to shitty play in the crucial moment. In football you don't get a best out of 7 series for talent to win out and one shitty performance and the season is done.

I'll take the first sentence as my main complaint.

This has been/is the yearly question and the answer is always the same. The Packers FO is fine and fucking dandy to do nothing that gets this team to the WINNER stage, and most here ignore that just having who you believe to be the best at whatever position isn't enough. Have they won the final game with this team? Have they got to play in the final game with this? Of these players you boast, which has risen to the level needed to WIN the final game? The cream rises to the top, and nobody on this team has done so, therefore it's false bravado to boast at having so much when they do so much less when needed.

I like that the team wins games, but I will not excuse the constant failure to win the SB, or partake in it, because of their yearly failings by players that are yearly boasted as being the best. Never have the presumptive best lose so often than that of GB. The only thing that's worse is the consistency of the FO to not fix what is so apparently wrong. It's talked about and recognized by everyone except the FO, who are the only ones able to correct it. If I whine as some say, it's because I, no matter what I say will change the FO doings, but my whine is to make the team a WINNER and not continually accepting and excusing losing.

No, what you do is say that because they don't make the move you think they should - that they are not trying and don't want to win. That's a big difference. You constantly over and over say that the whole packer fan base doesn't want to win. It was wrong the first time and will be wrong the 1 millionth time you say it. You consistently appear unable to understand that a fan can be both happy about 13 - 3 and a division championship and pissed about a championship game loss. Being excited about a playoff win over the Rams in no way detracts from a desire to get better, pick up good players and get rid of dead weight. They are not mutually exclusive.

I request the same from all others. I feel the same as all others. I just come from a different direction. I want more than a Division Title. I want more from the team that has the level of QB leading the way, and all should feel the same. When you have the best, you need to succeed beyond that which an average QB can obtain, a Division Title, playoff spot, and doing so a few more years than the average is not a success, it's being a better participant, and only holding a trophy (Division) of no real meaning, but emphasizes the failure to achieve the ultimate goal. Winning the Division is mooted by the inclusion of the Wildcards because you don't need it to be in it.

Slow and steady won the race between the boring turtle and the glitzy hare. I think most football purists understand that the games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. A QB that gets 2 seconds to read the defense and make a play will not perform as well as a QB that gets 3+ seconds regardless of their innate ability. Disrupt the passer on Defense and Protect the QB on offense is the name of the game so, yeah, boring works.

This is the year that I think GB should work the board and move down for more picks throughout as many rounds as possible. How many players like Walker Little, the Stanford OT, have virtually no football reps in the past two years. I just don't see how any GM can be comfortable going "all in" on this years' draft class. This is the year to take a dozen or more bites at the apple and hope that 5 or 6 of them are still edible in three years.

This is also the year where none of us Packers fans can forecast what Joe Barry has in mind for his defense. Even though the DL class is deemed suspect, he and Gutey may see tremendous value and we see GB take 2 DL in the first 3 rounds. The beauty of the upcoming week is that "life is a beautiful mystery".

The only shiny object I covet is the Lombardi Trophy. So I'll make the same boring comment: devote the majority of the draft to the defensive roster because that's what will eventually get us there. I really don't think we need to go OL in the first round, but definitely by the end of the third.

I'll say one thing in favor for consistent winning: it means the Packers are on national TV often, which means I only have to haul my carcass to the sports bar maybe 6 or 7 times.

I waited, until everybody followed each other. Now I'm going to tell you. Boring gets you Tony Mandrich. Oh you remember him. And you must remember Barry Sanders. (per that draft) Does this guy not look like Tony Mandrich to you? Why on earth would Gutey take a Ot, after going around the country looking at CBs? There is No way out now. It's CB all the way. And I hate it. Taking Teven Jenkins will finish Rodgers. He'll be done in Green Bay. And if Jenkins does start. You just wasted last years late draft picks. All in? Don't say it unless you draft like it.

Agree stockholder. I still believe the Packers first 3 picks should be CB, WR and DL in whichever order gives the BPA at each of those positions. We can take 2 OLs with our 4th pick and beyond. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Thanks, Since '61

so boring is a bad player and exciting is a good one? lol good to know.

How do we know Boring is Tony Mandarich and not Elgton Jenkins? SO Derrek Sherrod and Datone Jones were boring and Jaire Alexander and Kenny Clark were exciting? Wow that's easy then.

The Feet. Get into the scouting reports. Jenkins feet don't get set up quick enough against faster players. But the biggy I learned. Opted out in 2020 after lower back issue . Thats why!

I'm not crazy about drafting OT or C early. The biggest problem I have with the ML offense is when they have run up against Elite level Defenses with exceptional ILB's and DL the OL seem to get rag dolled (dominated). ML use of TE's so much limits running routes when much of it is heavily relied upon to bail out the OL all the time especially when facing these type teams to get a running game going. I do believe we need a really dominant RT and C to beat these type teams. I don't think it's a must we draft these type OL early as long as we find them, especially who excel in the run game. The TE's can then rub a defender on their way out to their route instead of blocking so much in the pass game. Our OL is good, not great.

If he sits like glue on #29, then he should move up in round two and bag Trey Smith. Nobody is going to rag doll this dude.

He has issues with blood clots in lungs. I think Liam Eichenberg would be a better fit. And the scouts say he has the best mechanics.

The blood clot stuff is now under control. He didn't move back toLT because the prospect they have there now is outstanding. Trey Smith can also be the RT. He will take no prisoners.
