Cory's Corner: Very Sloppy Season Opener
High expectations cannot save poor tackling and mental mistakes.
I
’m not really sure what I just saw.
I was really looking forward to seeing a new direction on defense. In came new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley with a promise that he would bring a more aggressive attitude.
The defense was gifted an awful throw by Jalen Hurts that was picked by Xavier McKinney and a terrible snap that hit Hurts in the arm. The Eagles beat Green Bay 34-29 in the NFL’s first stop in Brazil.
Remember when Jaire Alexander was supposed to be a shutdown cover corner? He looked confused and overmatched tonight. I thought things would changed now that Joe Barry was gone. Alexander kind of punched out last year because of the flimsy defense and lackluster effort that followed. He did have an interception by did he even think about running it out of the end zone? All that did was give the offense poor field position in the shadow of their own goal post.
But I cannot mention how hard it was to play defense when the playing surface at Corinthians Arena was an absolute joke. Playing on a soccer field is empirically different than playing on a football field. No soccer player is 300 pounds and chewing huge portions of sod. It was downright hard for defensive players to cut and maintain their position on their backfoot without losing their footing. It was so bad that Soldier Field in frigid December would’ve been 10 times better than the greasier version in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Hafley showed that he wasn’t holding back. He blitzed early and often but the problem was that the blitzes weren’t getting home. Sending an extra defensive player didn’t have the desired effect.
And Saquon Barkley carved up the middle of the Packers defense. They didn’t win the line of scrimmage by allowing 24 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns. But Barkely, the new Eagle that came to Philadelphia after six seasons with the New York Giants, also caught a couple passes — including an 18-yard touchdown on a swing pass that he torched linebacker Isaiah McDuffie.
And yes, the offense didn’t help much either. Xavier McKinney made a nice reaction on an awful throw by Jalen Hurts and picked it off. McKinney returned it to the Eagles 19. Five plays later, Brayden Narveson nailed a 31-yard field goal. On the ensuing drive, the Eagles inadvertently snapped it and hit Hurts in the arm. The Packers recovered at the Eagles 13. Eight plays later, Narveson hit a 23-yard field goal.
And to make matters worse, we are now sitting on our hands as we await a decision on Jordan Love’s injury. If he is out for any length of time, this team is in deep trouble.
You cannot win by being passive in this league. I know nobody wants to hear this, but that was exactly why the Packers lost the 2014 NFC Championship. They cannot keep allowing chunks of yardage and expect to win.
On fourth-and-1 early in the second quarter, T.J. Slaton was flagged for encroachment and the Eagles got a touchdown later in the drive. With 9:26 left in the second, A.J. Brown caught a 20-yard pass. Philadelphia later scored on that drive. With 3:33 left in the second, Dallas Goedert caught a 21-yard pass on third-and-7. With 1:59 left in the second on the same drive, Hurts found DeVonta Smith for a seven yard gain on fourth-and-3.
The defense just had troble getting off the field. The Packers were plus-two in takeaways, but got carved up all over the field. You cannot give up 34 points to a good team and expect to win.
I still think this team can be solid, but it has to make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. That is of the utmost importance because the secondary is not stepping up in big spots. They are not playing good coverage and the tackling has been dreadful.
This is a pivot point for the Packers. Do they spot their warts and get better or do they fold?
"I think Week 1, you just don't know what you're going to get," said Packers coach Matt LaFleur. "You know what I mean? It's kind of a slopfest, and tonight was certainly that."

Love’s injury is the only important thing from this game.
Sloppy field.
Season Opener.
High-quality opponent.
The Packers didn’t look overmatched; it was just sloppy.
Love is the question.

The expectation is different. SF, Detroit and Philly are the teams most feel are better than GB. All three have better coaching staffs, better o lines and you could argue GBs strength ( wide receivers) isn’t as good as them either.
But Love is supposed to be the ascending difference maker. Hopefully he will be. But in reality he’s played poorly against two of those teams in his last two games.
I will never trust this defense, even if Bill Belicheck was coaching it. We don’t have smart players and we can’t tackle. Alexander, Nixon, and Walker are not what I had hoped. McDuffie is not a top linebacker either.
If Love doesn’t live up to his contract , this team will regress. Six bad games, seven good ones and four so so’s won’t get you deeper in the playoffs.

MLF doesn't have a shinny record on opening weekend. Remember last season when the entire team actually looked really good against the Bears in week one? People asked Matt what the difference was between that 2023 team and any of the other week one teams before them the previous years. LaFleur replied "We played the starters in the preseason."
My question is if you KNEW that's a big part of why you didn't suck week one last season then why in the hell not get them more than THREE snaps this preseason? I understand, injuries...I get it but God damn!
Love didn't play well last night and the O-Line and some of his WR's did him ZERO favors. Drops, penalties, boneheaded mistakes at the worst possible time. This team needs to find some discipline and hopefully get some good news on Love.

The biggest trend I see with him is that in every game when there's adversity , there's a bad break, they get punched in the mouth, I keep waiting for him to have an immediate response, and in yet another game ...... One of these weeks, years? I see surprise disappointment but I'm waiting for the explosion., something to send a message that enough is, enough !

Other than Saquan, Brown and Reed, few had a good game. The Eagles got away with one they tried to give away. Neither team thrived. Love was arguably the better QB on the night too. Just made for poor football on both sides. A good game for a casual observer perhaps, but not good football.
I have to say that Emmanuel Wilson’s YPC at over 10
Is stunning given we’d managed about a yard before he got the ball. Why on earth take a guy out who has just done that both at the goal line and also for the next two quarters? If it’s working, let it work till it doesn’t.

This is the youngest team in the NFL and they played like it. They just played a top OLine and Dline team with formidable offensive weapons. The pack also has a new D coordinator.
They were in this game until the end.
It sucks that JLove hurt his knee and is likely going to miss at least a little time if not more.
This team battled despite self inflicted penalties and poor tackling.
Other than Loves injury I remain optimistic. I think this team played hard and could have pulled out a victory against a talented veteran team.

Youngest team but not the youngest defense. Realistically 29 points should get it done. Obviously they blew some RZ opportunities, but as always you knew the defense would wilt in crunch time. Who couldn’t envision Quay Walker making tackles 5 yards past the line of scrimmage, or Alexander being torched and unable to make a tackle ( after running his mouth )

There can be no excuses, and that includes the field conditions, since every player gets the time to walk, run, razzle, dazzle their footwork regardless of position played.
Nobody can complain about not playing preseason and then crying about not playing in preseason.
I don't know how serious the injury to Love is, but I'm against paying players that haven't truly earned the money or because he might get hurt and his financial security needs to be guaranteed before he gets hurt. Many were happy to pay him based on the small end of season sample, let's not cry over the spilled milk after you demanded it be filled to overflow, $255 million and $75 million guaranteed. He had a couple of moments, but he certainly wasn't a that level of contract value last night, and may never be, regardless of the seriousness of the injury.
The Defense needs work, as if that's a new issue.
The Offense still seems to have severe Red Zone issues, and TD's on big plays simply will not sustain to add up the wins.

I had higher expectations for Love and the offense, but the passing game looked disjointed most of the time and the running game didn't get cooking until the second half. We simply didn't look prepared at times; remember the two illegal shift penalties on the same set of downs? And then there were some of those throws like the skip pass to Reed on the crossing route--not remotely close. We should have been able to deliver a near-lethal blow to the Eagles after they turned the ball over twice early, but we squandered those opportunities. the final score would have been lopsided had it not been for the big contributions from Jayden Reed.
On defense it wasn't a horrible showing given the Eagles are a very good offensive team, but they caved when it mattered most in the fourth quarter (sound familiar?). The DC can preach better tackling all he wants, but the players have to actually do it on the field. Too many times the front four were stymied by the OL and failed to get any push. On the bright side there was McKinney in the first quarter--that's what a real safety looks like in action.
I think the defense will improve over time, but you have to wonder what their ceiling is. Once again we're going to be relying on finesse, athleticism, and (so far) the unfulfilled promise of better tackling to get the job done. In order to swallow opposing offenses alive, a couple of powerful hog-like defensive players up front would really come in handy, but that doesn't fit into the organizational philosophy as of yet.

Defense was a big disappointment again. Love was inaccurate many times just like early last year. Just my opinion but if the NFL is so concerned about kickoff return injuries just scrap it completely and place the ball at the 25 or 30. They took out an exciting part of the game. This new format is boring to say the least.

The only impactful loss for this game was the Love injury. For those of us who have played and watched the game - we know that his injury is not a day-to-day one. At best - out for several weeks. Probably - a number of months. Possibly - the year. So probably best to re-calibrate our expectations - for the sake of our mental health - and try to enjoy life without Love.

Alberta_Packer
September 07, 2024 at 11:55 am
A sports doctor assessed the hit and commented that he thought that it might be his MCL - as his knee appeared to pop - which is a characteristic of a MCL injury. Also I've had a similar injury which took 6 weeks to heal - which is the timeline for an MCL tear. Also, preliminary tests have ruled out Love's ACL - which was the worst case scenario.

The first game of the season always has the most over reaction of any game is sports. Win and it's on to the Super Bowl. Lose and the team is a disaster. Yes, overall the Packers did not play well and it looked like the 4th preseason game. But that will improve or at least it better. We'll see where the Packers are at after Week 4.
More critical than the Week One result is the injury to Love. If he's lost for a long period of the season I doubt if this team can recover especially with the current backup QBs. Hopefully we'll get answers soon on Love's injury. Until then hope for the best. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

I didnt think the team was over matched. Equipment personnel should have addressed the cleats and turf issues. LaFluer…. in the 3rd quarter I would have declined the penalty, kicked the field goal instead of going for 2.
On the Mckinney INT… it wasnt a gift, Hurts was under pressure all day and looked like he was hit as he was throwing.
Alexander couldnt keep up with Brown…not many corners can.
Quay Walker kept overshooting his gap and was too aggressive… I cant tell you how many plays he just whizzed past Barkley instead of diagnosing how the play is developing. He basically ran past Barkley all day. Im all about the aggression… but someone needs to chat with him about being too aggressive.
My needs list from the last 2 yrs is still unaddressed…There is still a need for a larger DL next to Clark and eventually Clarks replacement.
The situational play calling needs to improve, but as others have stated …LaFluers openers are usually less than stellar.

The outcome of Jordan Love's injury prognosis is yet to be determined but we should all be grateful Gutey traded for Malik Willis rather than keeping both young QB's. Willis is a veteran QB with some experience and obvious talent. I am curious to see how well he does as Willis brings a skill set similar to Hurts IMO.
I agree Love will be missed for however many games he may be out but the young Packer offense is still packed with talent. The Packers will need to lean on the running game and the short passing game. They have three very good RB's. Wilson is under-rated without question and we are still waiting to see Lloyd.
I would be shocked if the Packers with all their talent are not competitive in games while Love is out. This team is too talented to automatically believe the sky is falling!

Just a few things..
First off, Nick Perry hit the nail on the head, MLF doesn't have a good track record in opening games.
Second, it will take Green Bay some time to get their defense playing like the coach wants them to do. KC took about a half a season to play defense like SS wanted them to do when he took over their D.
Lastly, as a defense you can't let the other team close out the game with a 8 minute drive. Either bring more heat or drop more in coverage....That last drive by the Eagles was a gut check test that the Packers failed.
We will see if Love loses any playing time. At this point only one guy could possibly help if Love is out and I don't think Brady is interested in getting suited up for the Packers.
Alberta_Packer
September 07, 2024 at 12:42 pm
MLF, at times, can be very predictable. Like everyone knowing that Jacobs would be handed the ball for the first play of the game. So how about an RPO instead? Or his tendency to to call 3 running plays in a row? In short, a very unimaginative game plan by MLF.
Also the D is a work-in-progress that I think will require at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the season to start firing on all cylinders. Keep in mind that their first test was against one of the top offences in the League. All things considered - I'm giving them a pass on this game.
Yes the 8 minute drive was the Packers death nell. However the phantom holding call on Alexander was the critical play on that drive.

LA Fleur's words--" 9/6/24
Packers coach Matt LaFleur says he and his assistant coaches needed to do a better job in Friday night’s loss to the Eagles.
“There’s a lot to clean up,” LaFleur said. “It was definitely a sloppy game from us. I think there was some uncharacteristic things that we did as a staff, quite frankly, and that trickled down to our players, so we’ve got to look at ourselves hard in the mirror and find ways to get better, because tonight, obviously, wasn’t good enough.”

Words that never actually result in change lose their meaning over time. LaFleur is good at mea culpas, but so soon after the Broncos we are back listening to them again. We heard them many times with Barry, only to bring him back and repeat them for another year. We heard them about Drayton till it blew up in the playoffs. We’ve heard similar things about our blocking, but the song remains the same. Time has run out for too much credibility from such utterances.

Some obvious points.
First, the first few games of the season are just an extension of the preseason. Only the games count in the standings, and both teams have their starters out there. But mostly, these guys are getting their first real game action. It'll take them a few games to be ready for the season.
Second, the defense is still getting used to a new scheme, and if they look lost or not that sure of their assignments, it's because they aren't. You can do a lot of reps in camp, but when the real games begin, and offensive players do something unexpected, instead of reacting, you are thinking. How many games until the defense is more ready? Hopefully, very quickly.
All these comments also go for the offense. Again, it will take a while for the offense to gel.
Now, the good news. It doesn't matter at this point. What counts is which team gets hot at the end of the season, and puts forth their best effort at the right time. Game one in Brazil isn't that. Just like the start of the season last year after defeating the Bears didn't mean much when the offense really started clicking. A win would have been nice. but unless Love has a major injury, this season has a long way to go.
