Cory's Corner: What Does Aaron Rodgers Want?

Is it rings or money? One of the best passers has to decide.

Let the rumors swirl.

We just saw the final game of the 2021 season and now most of the talk will be centered on Aaron Rodgers. Where will he go? How will he get there? And what will it take?

We have heard from both the Green Bay Packers and from Rodgers that there is mutual respect on both sides. Rodgers has said the right things and coach Matt LaFleur has said the right things. Heck, even general manager Brian Gutekunst has said the right things.

Trouble is, I’m not sure what all those words mean. The Packers know that they cannot bring Rodgers back on a $46.6 million deal without crippling the rest of their franchise. And Rodgers knows his earning potential only has maybe three very good years left.

It’s obvious the Packers are a galaxy better with Rodgers under center. He proved that this year by delivering a second-straight MVP trophy. He continually pulled rabbits out of hats for the last two seasons, but ultimately failed when the lights were the brightest.

Maybe the Packers truly do want Rodgers back. But they are letting the decision ultimately fall on Rodgers. Nobody wants to make the decision to trade away a four-time MVP. In a sport that is predicated on quarterback play, you don’t have to look no further than the L.A. Rams as proof of the quarterback position. The Rams made the switch to the strong-armed Matthew Stafford and in his first season, he delivered Southern California a Super Bowl title.

Obviously the biggest question in this whole equation is Jordan Love. We have no idea how good Love is or how good he truly can be. I have heard from numerous people saying that he’s going to be a bust, but do we really know?

And how many teams feel the same way? Meaning, what could the Packers fetch in a trade for the Utah State quarterback that the Packers traded up to get in the first round? Not to mention, how many more years is Love willing to sit before being given a chance to play?

This season Rodgers said all the right things. In typical Rodgers fashion, he played with a chip on his shoulder and pitted himself against the world.

What needs to happen now is an honest conversation. Rodgers needs to sit down with Gutekunst and LaFleur and take their temperature of the franchise. Where do those guys see the team in two to five years? And the Packers need to ask Rodgers what he really wants in the twilight of his career. Rodgers cannot take the easy way out and say respect, because that usually just means a fatter contract.

If Rodgers truly wants to win as many rings as possible, then something has to be sacrificed. He cannot be paid that much money and expect to excel at a sport that has a salary cap. The reason why Tom Brady was competitive was because he was willing to play for under market value. And yes, you can argue that he has a supermodel wife that makes buckets of cash. But he did that knowing that his team would use that extra money on a defensive end, cornerback or tight end.

It’s a simple question Rodgers. What do you want? The problem is, I don’t think he really knows.

Pretty sure Rodgers wants:

- Personal attention and awards
- Power over the Packers Organization
- Money
- Trashy ironic fashion looks
- A Super Bowl ring

In that basic order.

So, the key is to not give Rodgers what he seems to want most of all: personal attention.
Who cares what Rodgers wants?

Gosh it sure seems like his teammates really like the guy. I can't imagine that would be the case if anything on your list was true. He might have choked on the biggest stage, but that would be fear, not anything on that list. The most personal attention you can get is to be the QB on a Super Bowl winner. And how can you question him wanting money? He's just won the MVP two years in a row; had 3 years of 13 win seasons, won more MVPs than anyone not named Manning, and has the best rating in the history of the franchise. Being the highest paid QB is a no-brainer. Whether GB can do that or not is the question. And this article suggests he might think at this point in his career that it might be worth it to take less money and try to build a team that could go all the way. But that's up to him. I'm not taking less money if I'm at the top of my career.

Who among the teammates of the self-exalted Aaron Rodgers would want to incur his self-righteous wrath?
They have to make nice with Rodgers, even if they may be seething inside with understandable anger at him.
When Rodgers was holding out of OTAs last June, all of the wide receivers stayed away as well (as I understand it). Was this (a) coincidence; (b) solidarity with Rodgers in admiration and affection for Rodgers; or (c) fear of Rodgers freezing anyone out who didn't conform to his supposed superiority?
Granted, we don't know what's really happening behind the scenes; but from what evidence is out there, it seems to me that Rodgers is a sly prima donna who has as much or more sway than our head coach.
I hope I'm wrong, but he seems a cancer that needs to be cut out right away.

I don't hate Aaron Rodgers at all, but I'm angry with him.
I'm especially angry with him for threatening to ruin this past season by holding out without any compelling reasons, and then trashing the front office when he did come back.
I held out hope all season that Rodgers would express some regret, some change, as far as being more agreeable and more coachable.
It doesn't seem to have happened. He seems about as arrogant as ever, as indicated by his push to play in the meaningless game against the Lions at the end of the regular season without apparently caring what his head coach might think about it.
I've been a big fan of Rodgers, and so his recent antics hurt even more.
I still want the best for the guy, but pandering to his ego isn't a help to him as a player or a person.
If Rodgers showed some significant change in attitude, I'd want to find a way to bring him back next year. As it is, I don't want him back at half his current salary, or at any reduced amount.
As of now, it seems he's poisonous to the Packers. His true friends would kick him in the pants and tell him to get a grip on reality.

I read the article and the vast majority of the comments and I still don't know what Rodgers wants:) However, It is quite evident what many of the commenters here want.

I do have one question for the commenters who only see Rodgers as a selfish choking Diva that doesn't care about anyone but himself ...

If Rodgers took fifty cents on the dollar to finish his career with the Packers, thus allowing more money to be spent on the rest of the roster, would you want him back?

It's not really the off-the-field stuff, it's not his personal life that is at issue (although his ratty hair is seemingly a symbol of his messy brain).
What bothers me is what Rodgers does in the locker room, on the sidelines, and even on the field as far as apparent insubordination to his head coach and general manager.
That seems to be the ruination of a healthy team and the destruction of any real hopes of winning a Super Bowl.
As Packers fans, we should know most of all the great lesson of the glorious Lombardi Era: Character counts.

I believe that there is something to be gleaned from the series of Rodgers appearance "transformations" over the years. While not quite the Michael Jackson's transfigurations - it does suggest to me someone who is not entirely comfortable with himself. Most recently, he seems to be chasing coolness - as evidenced by his "trashy ironic fashion looks." Also becoming the Head, last summer, of the Hawaiian brat pack. With Rodgers now approaching middle-age, and, having earned a baziliion dollars - I wonder how important football is to Rodgers anymore? This year we discovered that Rodgers generally does not like to practice or play in the cold weather. So...???

I think it's safe to say Rodgers would want and expect Adams back which is going to take a ton of money. Then there's that other issue of the rest of the WR room from 2021 where no one is under contract. To be competitive since he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild, DeAndre Campbell, hopefully Douglas, and others need to be resigned. You also have to figure in the extensions to players like Preston Smith, Jarie Alexander, and Eldon Jenkins to name a few.

SO... IF Rodgers wants to stay AND be competitive, he needs to FORGET about being the highest paid QB in the NFL. Hell, maybe even one of the top 10 paid QB's in the NFL. Nope, IMO Rodgers needs to take a VERY team friendly deal, WITH 2 or 3 VOID years to make it work.

Anything else is pointless, unless of course you want a version of the 70's and 80's Packers who won 4 or 5 games a year.

PS...Can we PLEASE have some articles about players coming out in the draft? It's starting to feel like last summer when I was held hostage by AR12 and EVERYTHING is about Rodgers...EXACTLY how he prefers it!

Nick,
Agreed! Exhausted hearing non-stop about Aaron Rodgers.

Ryan Wood just did a hit job on Jordan Love. An unfair article that was lazy basically painting Jordan as a bust. Why not do a good indepth article about Love. What he is doing this offseason, etc.

How about articles about some of the players on injured reserve and how they are doing. Of course, an article about the draft though there is no getting around it Rodgers has to be the center of anything draft because no one knows yet how he is going to impact the draft.

Hey Knock.... Yes, this true, but there are positions of need no matter what Rodgers does. The Packers BETTER draft at least one WR in the first 2 rounds, and IMO another by the 4th. The also need a D-Lineman early, and I'd say another edge rusher is a need as well.

There are positions of need no matter what Mr. Rodgers does.

At this point, Aaron Rodgers is the de facto GM and HC and President. Basically it's Russ Ball running to Aaron Rodgers for approval for every player transaction he does this off season. I'm not joking. They won't do a thing without Aaron Rodgers approval.

Look, he's already thrown gute under the bus once, don't think he won't do it again.

During the season, MLF will send in the play, but Rodgers is going to run whatever he wants just like he does now...including the playground stuff (go deep).

MLF is fully aware that Rodgers threw McCarthy under the bus and doesn't want to meet the same fate.

Love has not been sparkling in his very limited snaps, I will give you that.

QB who dance in and are brilliant from snap one are very, very rare. As a reminder the GBP have NEVER had a QB that fits that mold.

Why hate on Love and declare him a worthless bust when you actually have ZERO idea about his ability to become an NFL QB? ...and don't tell me you have seen this and you have seen that, you haven't seen even 1% of what the Packers have seen and they are working with him. Just like they worked with Favre and just like they worked with Rodgers (a complete throwing motion revamp, remember?)

Root for Rodgers all you like, but please, stop the Love hate. Give the kid a chance, he has faced enough challenges due to abbreviated reps due to covid, playing behind a future HoF QB, et al.

I don't think he meant you personally were hating on Love. Since you broached the subject, I think he was talking all the people in general who have been hating on Love. At least that's how I took it.

I'm getting old, but I remember in '07 when Favre stared down the right flat for the INT to send the Giants to the Super Bowl. I also remember ARs first full season at QB.

If you look at ARs last two performances in the playoffs, he might not have lost them, but he darn sure didn't win them either.

The NFL is a game of replacement, that is why Gutey spent a 1st and 4th on Love. Rodgers first season starting we went 6 - 10. I don't know what is going to happen, but if Love were to start next season, I feel confident that he would win more than 6 games.

Granted, I could be wrong, but that is just how I see it right now. I am to the point I hope AR says: Thanks for everything, but I would like to be traded. It lets our FO off the hook, AR gets what he asks for, and we can move on knowing we didn't hold him hostage.

In a couple years, he can come back and we can retire his jersey and when he retires, he can come back into the fold just like Favre did.

The Packers aren't going to get top trade offers if the league knows they are planning on trading Rodgers.

Very publicly stating, repeatedly, that the Packers will do everything in their power to retain Rodgers tells 31 teams that if they want Rodgers they are going to have to bring a big offer to the table.

It’s a theory that fits the known facts. and it allows the organization to seize the high ground.

But note this: Saying “we will pay you big money to stay” is not the same as “we won’t trade you”

I know that saying anything that diminishes Rodgers trade value is counterproductive to the good of the team.

At least Favre’s team went to overtime & scored more than 10pts.

Rodgers was utterly impotent vs the Niners. Who cares if he didn’t throw an INT. Garappolo threw 2 and won. Brady threw 3 last year and still beat the INTless Wonder. Hell, Russell Wilson threw 4 INTs and still beat Rodgers.

You did couch it to address it as of now. You have to agree that the limited amount of time we have seen Love doesn’t really provide us any strong indications of either direction. Even Mahommes had a bad game that day, which I attended and it was very windy inside the stadium. And for Love who got thrown into the game without preparation or coaches game planning to his strengths had to deal with a very loud crowd. His 1/2 half game with 2nd and 3rd stringers in Detroit also wasn’t a good indication. Lastly, even if they were it is a very limited amount of play to make much of an indication. There are many HOF QBs who had bad first years.

After Rodgers held the Packers hostage by threatening not to play [putting the whole season in Jeopardy ;-)]; and then when he came back and immediately trashed the front office; and then seemed to decide for himself that he wouldn't play in the preseason -- after all this I tried to give Rodgers all these months to show some real humility, some real regret, some real graciousness.
It hasn't seemed to happen. His apparent bullying of our head coach to play in the meaningless game against the Lions is an indication of his continuing insufferable arrogance.
So, I'm at the point where I wouldn't want to keep Rodgers even it meant winning a Super Bowl. It's not worth selling out our dignity as fans to pander to his self-serving manipulations.

"...Jordon Love isn't the answer."

Based on what? The Chiefs game where he outplayed Mahomes in a game controlled by defenses?

Maybe the 2nd half of the Detroit game when he played with 2nd and 3rd stringers...outplayed Rodgers...actually led the team to a lead late in the game that the defense gave away?

I recall Rodgers first 3 years playing behind his legend in mop up duty. He wasn't the answer either, according to many fans...the same fans who were miffed at TT selecting a 1st round QB with #4 still playing at a high level.

It is unfair to judge Love after 6 quarters of NFL regular season football. Two words: Trevor Lawrence.

I'm still waiting for the answer to the question as to how such a superior superstar quarterback could miss such a wide-open receiver in a key play at the end of a playoff game that may well have been the difference between winning and losing?
It's one of the most horrible mistakes in NFL playoff history, comparable to fumbling or throwing an interception one yard away from a winning touchdown.
It's a gaffe of legendary proportions.
Did Aaron Rodgers not see the open guy or just ignore him? What happened in this critical moment in the mysterious mind of our supposedly irreplaceable quarterback?
Has anyone dared to ask Rodgers, to call him out for this massive blunder, to seek some kind of explanation from our pompous regular-season MVP as to how he could come up so pathetic in the most momentous of moments?
Unless there's a satisfactory answer, and some solid reason to hope for change, why would anyone want such a failure back?

Hello BIRDDOGUNI,

Several radio hosts, including Bill Michaels have declared Love a bust already. I don't like that only because he started one game in a system that was designed for Rodgers.

By "radio hosts", I assume that you mean "professional football scouts". What? No? You don't mean that?

Just because somebody's on the radio or TV doesn't mean they know anything worthwhile to listen to. It means that they're probably good looking (TV), have a great speaking voice, and good hair (TV).

Have any former professional QBs gone on the record that Jordan Love is a bust? NO. Until one does and explains WHY he thinks that way, there is no credibility to your assertion.

Yeah, calling Love a bust is hyperbole, with no basis in fact, IMHO.

Don't get me wrong. Many Packer Blog writers declared Love the worst pick in history the night he was drafted. Paul Noonan at APC had a prolific meltdown that night, which you can see on YouTube. Lol.

The odds are against him being a HOF'er, but that doesn't mean he's a bust. Besides, Gutey drafted him. It's not Love's fault Gutey moved up and used an extra 4th round pick to acquire him. That's on Gutey. Adding a 1st round QB pick to the roster is all on Gutey, and it is yet to be determined whether it was stupid or genius.

Most people railed against the pick, but that still doesn't mean Love is a bust. If he never gets a chance to play, we may never know, either way.

Most (including me) railed for the fact that they picked a project QB who explicitly wasn’t intended to play for years primarily. That actually had nothing whatever to do with how well he might play when he did. Only after did most start to take sides on Love’s record/potential.

Several radio hosts? That’s what you based your “numerous people have labeled Love a bust” comment on? I appreciate your article but please don’t feed the trolls unless you have better sources. Love may or may not end up being a decent NFL QB but radio hosts are some of the last people I would choose to evaluate NFL talent.

I think many of the people you are hearing say Jordan Love is a bust are actually Rodger fans/supporters. They want to perpetuate that Love is a bust so that more people including the GBP's FO believe the Packers absolutely need to keep Rodgers if they want to remain competitive. I simply do not buy it!

You may be right, but I think for many it’s an easy, simplistic argument against the threat of change. It’s also irrelevant, since Rodgers is not in a competition against Love, but in one with the cap, wider roster, recent record and time.

Aaron Rodgers wants to be Packers president, Packers GM, Packers HC, Packers OC and Packers QB. He also wants weak D and bad ST, so he can use that facts as justification for his own failure. Everybody else is unimportant. He is pleased with MLF because he takes public blame for losses and support Aaron Rodgers feel of greatness.

I did not like Tom Brady, I was convinced that AR is better than he is, but today I except that TB is GOAT and, unfortunate for many of us, AR is great stage choker.

I know that many of you really believe how Packers have the best choice to win SB with AR, my opinion is that in 2 years span chances of winning SB is about the same with AR or JL. Only difference is that with AR Packers will have better position when playoff starts.

There is the proof in many years, more than one decade,

"Aaron Rodgers wants to be Packers president,..."

Hyperbole, for certain, but not too far off. ARod wants a voice broadly in whatever organization he's part of, so if a GM out there decides to make a deal to bring him in, that GM better have a big office, because someone's going to want some desk space in there, too. Is that because he feels he's earned it, or because he thinks he can do the job better, or because he has some personal grudges he wants to settle? I think there's evidence for all three of those.

"I know that many of you really believe how Packers have the best choice to win SB with AR, my opinion is that in 2 years span chances of winning SB is about the same with AR or JL...."

I think there's no doubt that the Packers' best chance of winning a SB in 2022--as we see the team right now, and that's a huge part of this: we can't decouple our current view from the team--hinges on a return by #12. Do I think their chance in 2022 is as good as it was in 2021 or 2020? Hell no. But it's hard to see how this team will be nearly as talented in 2022 as it has been the last two years, either.

I'll come back to the perspective that if it isn't ARod, it doesn't need to be JL under center in 2022. The Packers will need to be aggressive in their pursuit of a QB going forward. Until we see JL start cutting it loose in game situations, we're all going to be uneasy about him--and management should be, too.

I have no idea what Love is. He neither played in the Covid truncated preseason in his first year nor even ran the scout team. We barely saw him with the starters this preseason and the only time he started they ran the full Rodgers system, with no practice, and game plan too, which was plain daft. In Detroit he came in only when the starters were out.

Essentially, we’ve got a player with one year of preseason Experience almost exclusively with backups and a couple of games with a plan designed around a veteran. Impossible to know. Maybe they start him if Rodgers leaves, but I really don’t think that’s certain. Then again, this isn’t and never has been a situation driven by Rodgers v. Love. It’s Rodgers versus not Rodgers and if it’s not, we have the wrong FO.

Still in Detroit he played better than Aaron Rodgers. Starters produced 13 points in the first half, Jordan Love and lot of scrubs produced 17 points, almost won the game. It was not that Jordan Love had SB level performance, but he was till better in moving the chains and scoring the points!

"In a sport that is predicated on quarterback play, you don’t have to look no further than the L.A. Rams as proof of the quarterback position."

So why there is no Mahomes, Allen in SB, but 2nd season QB (Burrow) and why there is not Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers but Matt Stafford?

You also forget one very, very important issue that brought us to LAR - Bengals SB. Those were 2 teams with the healtiest roster in the NFL. That means only one thing. You do not need HOF QB to win SB, you need HEALTHY ROSTER.

Only seriuos injury loss LAR had was 2nd WR who was quickly replaced by OBJ. Bengals lost the game because their important injury loss (LT) was not replaced. So both team were healty ones, not the teams with HOF QB!

I will say that now it looks like Joe Burrow will be HOFer for sure. But today he is stil 2nd year QB in NFL! For Matt Stafford I'm not so sure. I do not see LAR that high in NFL as this season because they are filled with lot of vets who will start to decline, OBJ is in question with his knee injury and they have some players on expiring contracts. If LAR will be less strong on D, I do not expect that Matt Stafford will be able to overcome that minus. But who knows.

Still, both teams were the healthiest teams in whole NFL 2021 season. That is the fact. SO all the minuses or flaws where covered by executions of their star players. We had blocked punt and missed FG. So, our D did not allow TD, LAR D allowed 2 TD and they had missed FG. Still won!

Can you imagine what would happen if their 7 out of 10 most valuable players on the roster was out because of injuries. How far LAR would reach? Same is with Bengals.

Stafford aint Hall of Fame. It just goes to show -that one play can make you a hero or supposedly a choke. Stafford threw an INT against San Fran late in the game - game over San Fran - except the guy dropped the ball. Now Stafford is a hero. Tom Brady was on the sidelines against Seattle and they throw a pass that was intercepted and Brady has another ring - should have been a loss. One play one play. AR has had several of those where he was right there - on side kick against Seattle. Two coin toss losses - Seattle and Arizona and never touched the ball. One play sometimes. Stafford is a chump as is his wife. And dont get me going on AR's recent tom foolery from last offseason to the Vaccine debate. But he wins games and has 3 good years left because he has played 3 less years than guys like Brady Manning Rivers Big Ben.

No 2nd year (11/2 really) QB is anointed to the hall of fame. We’ve seen plenty of flames that burnt short and brightly. Some were figured out, some were broken. I happen to think Burrows has potential, but he needs to survive for many more seasons, something that is legitimately questionable unless they protect him a great deal better.

Canadapacker - if there is only one play why than Packers did not win Niners. Packers scored TD on the first possession and after that there were numerous possession with only 1 FG and lot of 3 and outs! LAR scored enough to win, they scored when they needed to. Aaron Rodgers never score when he needs to. When he needs to do something he choke. Lot of examples. How many point Packers scored against Seatlle in the second half of that NFCCG? Do you know. And they played whole 2nd half with injured Sherman who was not able to rise his left arm. How many throws went to his direction? NONE! That is I call FEAR. Your beloved Diva had pants full of some smelly substance. He never looked at Sherman direction. He cut the field in half for his team. That is not how you can win the game.

Also, if only one play is the one that decide the outcome, than you can not say you are good team, or player. Game lasts 60 minutes, not one play. True competitive person would find fast and adequate answer on issues he is chalanged, he will not sit at chair and cry about his destiny. That was what we saw from Aaron Rodgers in the divisional round this season. He was sitting on the bench with look at his face that was saying - do not bother me!

You may find zillion reasons way you did not succeed, but there is always only one answer - you were and you are not good enough! Because you did not find the way to overcome obstacles. True competitors would find a way!

Dont be anal - New Orleans lost the to the Rams when they didnt call a very very obvious PI late in the game. Otherwise the Rams are not in the Superbowl that they lost.

If there is a penalty early in the game then one can say that you had the whole game to overcome a bad call - but when the bad call comes late in the game ( and one can argue that the late PI against Cinci was one ) - it becomes almost impossible to overcome.

There are many of those situations and if the NFL wants to promote and encourage gambling then they better straighten out some very bad officiating - both the rules and the lack of review.

If you dont win the toss as Buffalo didnt this year nor did the Pack twice - how is that blaming the QB???? Especially when there are usually 30 other quarterbacks that never even made it that far???

You obviously do not believe in consequences. Every action you do (by word, or by act, or even by thought) brings consequences through responds. All those one plays you are mentioning are the end of the line of consequences for some act you did maybe few minutes ago or maybe at the beginning of the game. For example, you called one formation and played from it on second snap of the game. You use similar or same formation at the end of the game and opponent DC or players recognize it and prepared for it. You did not succeed this time. I make it simple, it is not that simple in the life, as not in the football. Just to show how one of your action can cause wrong ref call at the end of the game you lost. Because of the refs? Or because you started causally consequential bound that brought you to the moment you'll blame for everything.

Sorry, but that is how world and life function. And the mass of people will talk about luck or unluck, depending on the side you found yourself. There is no coincidence. Everything is causally consequential!

Preach brother Croat!

Defenses adapted to Rodgers by the KC game in 2011. He’s never changed his game enough to win when it matters after that. We’ve seen him exit the playoffs every year since with the same gutless, constipated play. But very few INTs so he’s the GOAT or something.

I hope he just wants to golf because i don’t enjoy his football game. I wonder who he blames when he misses putts?

The Packers have painted themselves in a corner by trading up to take Jordan Love and then finding out that he is ten thousand miles away from being ready to run an NFL Offense (and may never be ready).

The Packers instead should have traded up for Justin Jefferson but were outfoxed by those clever Minnesota Vikings!

Then:

*Aaron Rodgers went out and won MVP Honors not once but two years in a row!

*Jordan Love looked like a deer in the headlights when he had his chance to show his stuff!

*The Packers again got knocked out of the playoffs. Imagine how different they would have looked with Justin Jefferson opposite Davante Adams instead of Jordan Love holding a clipboard?!

And now the Packers front Office has no choice but to try and resign their 4 time MVP QB or risk their own job security, covering up the fact that they made a major blunder in the drafting of the docile Jordan Love instead of Jefferson!

Ask yourselves this? Do you honestly see any spark? Any fire? Any leadership traits in Jordan Love? He seems like a nice enough kid but seems way too chill and emotionless to lead an NFL franchise. Certainly not a guy that can inspire teammates to rise up and conquer adversity. No he seems like the guy that will move the team between the 20's and throw the killer pick! If you don't believe that just watch his College film, not just the highlights! It happens again and again and again!
Ask yourself this again honestly. Who has shown more fire in the belly traits? Jordan Love or Kurt Benkert? If you are being honest with yourself and not just wishing the 1st Round choice pans out, it is Kurt Benkert by a mile.

It is time to trade the kid, get what they can and push the poker chips all in on the 4 time MVP and do what they can to win now!

While I think your take is ridiculous, if Gutey were to trade Love, it would be an admission he messed up, and that is just not happening.

I think it's much more likely he trades his 4 time MVP than admit he made a mistake moving up for Love.

Besides, you can rail against Love all you want, but none of us truly know what Love is at this point. Until he's actually given a chance, nobody will know.

I agree - dont think that you trade him yet - this year at least. Look at the guys who are going to/could be available this year - ( not counting Rodgers) - Wentz, Garappolo, Trubisky , Mariota , Bridgewater, Brisset and probably Sam Darnold. Now Love is better than those guys - maybe potentially - but right now NO. So keep him until financially one needs to make a decision. I actually think that the best of the bunch is Trubisky and I would flip him to Buffalo for a pick if AR would move on. But Detroit got two 1 and a 3 for Stafford and is anybody going to give us that. And now Detroit is getting number 32 for the Stafford trade. And what would that team have left if they had to sweeten the pot to get AR - probably nothing.

To your point, we don't know. Only way to know is let him get on the field for an extended period of time.

Exactly. ARod sat for 3 years behind Favre. We drafted Love with the idea that he would have time to develop behind Rodgers.
There is no logical reason to trade Love at this particular time. Due to Covid, Love has really only had one year of true normal NFL training, Nobody knows for sure what we have with him.
Even if Rodgers stays I wouldn't be in a rush get rid of Love.

First the Packers only gave up a fourth rounder for Love; people who say they gave up a 1 and 4 are forgetting that we got a 1 back.

Secondly, Jefferson opposite Adams during that last drive would've made no difference because AR wouldn't have thrown anything to him either, just like he didn't throw to Lazard or ESB. We could've line up Megatron, Jerry Rice, and Adams and AR would've STILL thrown it to a double-covered Adams.

"The Packers instead should have traded up for Justin Jefferson but were outfoxed by those clever Minnesota Vikings!"

More litigating draft picks? yay...
Never mind that we're litigating that pick in the lens of the 2022 Packers and post covid cap crunch issues...and well away from a 2019 ARod who looked far less MVP-ish than the 2020 or 2021 ARods.
Never mind that if the Packers dealt their 1st and likely 3rd rounders (with some later pick likely in return based on value charts) to move up to a position ahead of where the Vikings went for Jefferson--a WR--this place would have lost its collective minds.
...but sure. Why not.

Again--coupling the ARod situation only to Jordan Love loses sight of the bigger issue: cap problems and the future success of the team. The Packers have precious few chips to push to the middle--in fact, they're in the hole and the house is calling to settle up.

"Ask yourself this again honestly. Who has shown more fire in the belly traits? Jordan Love or Kurt Benkert?"

Don't care who it is. If the Packers part ways with #12, they need to aggressively locate that next QB. Maybe it's Love, but don't think so narrowly that the next QB of the GB Packers is already in the locker room.

Nice try Roadrunner!

"Who has more fire in the belly traits"

Now that is a first! How is that even measured? Every player is unique and has their own approach and style. One of the positive qualities I have read about Love is he remains calm regardless of the situation. I read this year a few Packer players such as Lazard that Love manages the huddle well.

So which player (Crosby or Molson) has 'more fire in the belly traits'? Is the better kicker the one who shows 'more fire'?

Do not think so!

It’s also what the team said when they drafted him. They made it clear that the attraction to them of Love was a superior talent level (in their estimation) that was not yet ready. They appear to have seen Love as a guy who, like Rodgers proved to be, could be radically improved with the luxury of time. So, they’ve been consistent in that from day one.

The Love centric analyses we see here not only ignore that fact but, in my view, completely miss the point. Love isn’t pushing Rodgers on the field and no one has claimed that. The wider roster, cap and other considerations are the sole drivers.

Does Rodgers or the Packers have the leverage? I believe it is Rodgers because, If Rodgers won’t negotiate a new contract than the Packers are stuck with an intolerable 46M SC for 2022. Since the Packers are about 50M over the SC, That alone makes it extremely difficult for the Packers to get under the SC before FA starts. Of course, all the other teams seeking Rodgers services know this and will use it against the Packers during negotiations. On the flip side if multiple pursuers are prevalent than it will increase his value.

That said, Those that think there will be a similar deal the Rams provided the Lions for Stafford are going to be disappointed. I believe if the Packers do trade Rodgers, it will be 1 first and a couple of 2nd/3rd round picks or a comparable value player(s).

I wish I had the video of the discussions Gutey, Ball, LaFleur, and AR had those 4 extra days he spent in GB, after the season.

My movie scenario is all of them in a room with a bottle of scotch, pouring over the options before them, and AR coming up with the scenario of greenlighting a trade for all they can get.

Them planning his return to retire his jersey number, etc., etc...

In my version, AR compares Love to where he was at the same time in their careers and points out Love is actually ahead of where AR was after two years in GB, and they come up with the "We want AR Back..." PR campaign narrative knowing they were going to trade 12, with his blessing.

I know this is all BS, but I wish it would've happened... ; P

Then Aaron can say ok I'm retiring or you can trade me to these teams. Don't ask again my decision is final.

I actually pray that is exactly what AR said.

"Trade me to these teams, or I will retire..."

Greenlighting a trade would be my perfect scenario for the Packers FO in my opinion.

Which to me means, we trade AR for all we can get, draft to surround Love with assets, a great defense, and great STs.

I would go as far as to hope for AR to win a Super Bowl with the Broncos in Love's first year of starting in which we win the North, but aren't quite there yet, and then the next year Love beats AR in the Super Bowl. Hey, it could happen... : )

Well said . I don't know if jordan love stinks or is a quality starter but I do know 2 mvp years on loaded roster equals zero super bowls.

And just who won the last 5 Superbowls - I know I know not Green Bay - but who won the last 5 Superbowls - I thought that Tampa had the loaded team this year bringing everybody back. I thought that KC had the best roster and was a guaranteed SP pick.

I am not a fan of AR and his antics - nor was I a fan of #4 when he started that retire or not retire BS near the end of his career with us. But that aside - until we really know about Love and how many top picks are great = where was Mahommes picked? #10 - where was Trubisky #2 Who are the 4 best QB's from 2018 - Baker Darnold Rosen Allen - and of course everybody missed on #30 - Lamar Jackson.
So we better hope that Love is a Jackson and not one of the top guys I guess - but the chances are slim to none - from the first bit that we have seen.

My point is - that the Steelers got out of cap hell this year with Big Ben - we can do the same with some creative accounting and get both AR and Adams and others back . Some guys may need to be renegotiated ( or back up plan cut) . Most will want to be on a team that has a high chance of winning.

And whatever one thinks about AR and his demeanor - or his Vaccine stance or his attitude this past offseason - he is our best chance to win until we see what is up with Love. Now after next year we may need to make a decision about the 5th year option - but because Love hs hardly played - It should be pretty cheap wouldnt it - not like Josh Allen???

If they are able to bring back 12, 17 and others, there really is no salary cap.

“ Outside of star defender T.J. Watt, the Steelers don't currently have a lot of players to get excited about as they begin what looks to be a rebuilding process. Fortunately, they are set to have over $40 million in effective salary cap space in 2022, according to Over the Cap. While it seems like this money could go far, it’s important to remember that some of this will be used on extension and that the team only has 43 players under contract next year.“ Discussing further cuts necessary in order to free up room to get through the season.

https://stillcurtain.com/2022/01/24/3-easy-cuts-steelers-15-million-cap-...

So yes, they are relatively better off than we are cap wise, but still have almost as small a pool of players currently contracted as we do and still need to cut and find a QB. The Steelers fans aren’t particularly optimistic about their chances at this point. I hardly see them as the poster team for the point you are trying to make, in fact, they are probably an example that speaks against it.

The most unrealistic part of that is Aaron Rodgers playing in another super bowl. He’d have to win a conference championship first. In the AFC. Vs Mahomes,Herbert, Allen, Burrow…. Not happening.

There are several twists to this story. A.R. knows the Packers financial woes. Wouldn't a consensually agree salary be an indication of both sides working together to keep this team together? If the F.O. doesn't insist on numerous 1st/2nd rounders for AR in a trade, then they have betrayed PackerNation. As for Love, cut bait and seek a trade. We have little to no evidence of him being NFL ready in the long term. And if Love's contract is up, I can't imagine Pack renewing it unless there is evidence that he's the successor to A.R.

"What needs to happen now is an honest conversation. Rodgers needs to sit down with Gutekunst and LaFleur and take their temperature of the franchise. Where do those guys see the team in two to five years?"

It's obvious that someone hasn't been paying attention as this question was answered the moment they drafted Love. The question now is how to put the pin back into the grenade before it really goes off. The answer to that, not saying is the right answer, appears to be to blow up something, the salary cap for years or the roster. The problem is that with or without Rodgers, this team is dead in the water for seasons to come, in regard to SBs, but Division Titles may still be somehow obtainable. YIPPEEEEE!!!!!!!!

The conversation should have been along these lines. Here’s what we think we need to do with the roster to get where you need to be for us to have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl. Do you disagree?

(Listen, discuss, and either agree or disagree as amended.). If agreed move on, if not, skip the next point.

To do that, we need to do the following cap gymnastics. These will entail big future costs for the franchise-to emphasize the commitment being made (Listen and discuss).

The final point is, given the above, this is what we need your contract to be. Are you willing to stay on that basis? We need your answer by March 1. If you agree, we move forward. If not we will trade you or you can chose to retire. We understand and accept that that is your choice, and have a plan should you elect to do so. These are our terms and the reasons for them. We mutually agree that these are contingent on us both agreeing not to discuss more in public until after you have decided. Have a nice break.

That’s roughly how a franchise in control would approach this. Know what the stakes are, have a plan for each and a black lines that won’t be crossed. Be open to discuss and amend from input where reasonable and consistent, but then stick to it and make it clear that these won’t move. Be prepared for all 3 options, but don’t waiver on them. Let Rodgers choose.

Any other approach likely represents a ceding of position and indicates a lack of conviction or resolution.

I agree that is how it should have taken place, but it hasn't as far as it is perceived based on available knowledge supplied. The FO, and many a fan, believed, right or wrong, that the FO had and has all the leverage as to the Packers' future of the team. If they do, then they must go with the plan they hopefully have if an answer from Rodgers isn't met by the date of their choice, and not waiting for Rodgers to slow cook them in his croc-pot.

Meh I don’t personally care much either way but am sick of Rodgers throwing 40 yard bombs on 3rd and 1. If Rodgers leaves and love stinks then the packers will get higher draft picks and replace him. What ever, it will all work out.

Rodgers won’t get us to another super bowl with his refusal to hand the ball off or throw a check down. We’ve all seen Brady dink and dunk and hand off the ball on his way to 7 super bowl wins…

Rodgers wants a championship team. Not the tear off the band-Aid. You and others have stated! You have all the answers but the right one. You want a guy gone. Because Gutey F**ked up a major draft with a Bust. And No matter how you sugar coat it. The players he drafted, could be gone within 3 years. Injuries and Free Agency, could make this team a loser to come for years. Stab Rodgers in the back all you want. Without him. The Rats will leave the ship anyway. We're only as good as Rodgers. And this FO knows it. The whole League knows it. Yet most of you; just think a championship grows on trees.

While you are at it, who do you recommend that we appoint as a GM to avoid future busts? Especially ones that no one else has the evidence to determine at the time if writing, so we can can them now.

Gary and Dillon I know you have long pronounced busts, Nijman, Turner, I forget the long list of proven busts you’ve regaled us with as draft picks or FAs.

If only we listened! Then moving to Love would not matter. Because we’d be fighting for first rounders anyway.

The larger question for me is first- what do the fans and stockholders want? If it is a regular season MVP, then Rodgers is the man. He has proven to be a fine (fair-weather) QB (both literally and figuratively). However, if it is a proven playoff performer, with the ability to take the team to a SB, then Rodgers is a poor choice. In the last 3 years, his playoff record is 0-3 (with some ghastly performances). This is a pattern. So if Rodgers is retained, then there will be a much higher probability that he will go 0-4 in the playoffs - than not. Particularly with a team that will be hobbled by the salary cap and reduced assets.

In all the informal polls about retaining Rodgers, or not - 75% to 80% of the fans seem ready to move on from the Rodgers era. Plus all the major economic, financial, personnel and social factors show that the time is now, for a change. So, for me, the question as to what Rodgers wants, is irrelevant. Moreover, I do not want another off-season, of a potential sequel to "The Beautiful Mystery."

I asked that question of a bunch of mostly casual fans recently for something to talk about. I was actually very surprised at the almost universal desire to be done with Rodgers.

I’m not in agreement with the type of reasons mostly cited, but it is interesting that the overwhelming response was a desire to move on. I think that it’s possible that the Packers have dramatically misread the mood of casual Packer fandom. Certainly those I listened too were not impressed with the noises coming out in the local media. This is very different from the atmosphere during the transition from Favre.

I'm hoping that whatever interest the FO is showing in a Rodgers return - is an illusion - perhaps for some face-saving purpose - so as to prop-up Rodgers market value. Anything else would be a heart punch to the franchise.

I don’t really buy the need for them to say anything other than that the ball is in Rodgers court. The league knows the dilemma and that staying may not be an option that suits either.

I believe it is saturation with all this talks and Aaron Rodgers behaviour through this last year. People love mysteries but not for that long. You'll either solve the mystery or you can forget it, but when you constantly fire up it become tiresome and people wants to finish.

Aaron Rodgers arrogancy just add additional weight on the mystery.

I still believe the agreement will include the trading of Rodgers and moving forward with Love. The team needs to get its financial house in order and go the hopefully mini retool route and roll the dice with Love. Management felt at the time Love was drafted he was the future. In addition to trading AR, they need to take a look at many of these big money contracts, keeping in mind they got some younger players coming off their original rookie contracts.

There is not doubt in my mind that Rodgers is a superior QB. And at this point Love is not even close. So the question is what can the team do about it when stuck with a massive cap hit if they pay and keep him? One option is to lose Rodgers and build a team around a sub par QB. That’s one way and it can work. The other option is to keep Rodgers and work around the cap with pushing the hit into the future and losing some important players and hope that their replacements do better than expected. I expect that right now Ball and the team is working around the latter. However, if Rodgers balks then it’s the former. It’s out of our (the fan’s) hands and it’s frustrating to us but that’s what makes us fans. We love our team and want the best. I am so happy that I am not a fan of some of the other teams that are dealing with their own clown shows.

It will be an interesting four weeks leading up to free agency. Lots of speculation and I know there will be a couple of surprises. I hope Gute does what I think is best for the Packers, and that's to trade Rodgers. To keep him means some of the free agent starters will be gone, and I don't think he can win the big game when it counts. I thank him for his great regular season play and stats. I am ready for a QB (trade for a vet or Love) that will adhere to LaFleur's play calling and not play hero ball. Packers still have a very good core of players if most can return under the salary cap.

Hackett becomes Denver headcoach...Rodgers and Hackett have no doubt discussed a potential future together. If Aaron wants Denver, Denver GM has leverage given internal dialogue. SInce the Hackett hire Packers front office (plants?) PR about going all-in again, despite cap implications. Why would they say that? To maintain elevated draft capital in any deal from all potential suitors.

Game of chess.

Trade Rodgers, get compensation, build for the future.

I have no idea what Rodgers wants or if it has already been worked out and we just get to wait. I will however, assume that if he stays, he’s gonna want his cake and eat it too. Meaning, he’ll try to get Cobb and Adam’s back. If this is in fact the case, I hope he understands that this defense will suffer from here on out if this happens, and if he cares, this scenario will possibly leave the Packers future in the 80’s mediocre dark age once again. As I see it, there is no last dance left. Running it back means two more years of one and done while paying off void years like an irresponsible credit card user. It’s all as interesting as it is exhausting waiting this out. Not one of us has a crystal ball nor inside information. All we have is speculation, daily click bait, and our own opinions and emotions. God speed Packer nation. We’re either going more into debt while trying to win a title, or we are going to start a new era with many more options for retooling.
Side note: I have checked my settings but I never get alerted of comments, likes, or hates. Something I’m missing?
Have a great week everyone.
