The Packers have begun making cuts to get down to the 53 man roster limit.
The #Packers are cutting Ty Summers, their former seventh round LB who has been a top special teamer, source said. He’ll get looks on the waiver wire.

The Packers have practice later today and another one tomorrow. No doubt we'll see a few more names pop up in advance of those practices as the team won't want guys they plan on releasing on the practice field and risking injury.
A former 7th round pick, Summers played in 14 games last season, logging four tackles (all solo) on defense and five tackles and a FR on special teams before being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 24th.
The TCU product played in 32 regular-season games with one start and all four postseason contests in 2019-20, contributing on defense (27 total tackles, 19 solo) and special teams (16 tackles) during the regular season.
He lead the Packers with 12 special teams tackles in 2020.

I remember his rookie year, when he looked impressive against other teams 3rd string in preseason. A lot of "expert" fans thought he was the next Butkus, would be moving right into the starting line up. It was probably the same "experts" who said the Rashan Gary pick was the worst pick in the history of the NFL.

Thought they would keep him for the STs. Played too Cautious.

Hmmmm.....they mention the tackles but not the missed tackles.

You're correct. He had trouble at Left ILB. He played better on the right. But Barnes was better. And neither could get over to the sidelines fast enough. And Now Walker gets his shot.

Most only care about 'highlights' so they can be used as the 'but' in defense for a player's time with the team.

OR - missed tackles are not a tracked stat. As usual, you're trying too hard.

Did not know that Aaron. Thanks. I just remember the last game when he got faked out so bad and a year or so ago as well.

He certainly never improved from scrimmage, which is disappointing. Still, to get what they got out of him on special teams, as a 7th round pick, it's a decent return on the investment overall.

Well, I am not sure I understand. The NFL doesn't track that stat, but Pro Football Reference does, and I think PFF. The NFL doesn't track pressures as an official stat as far as I know, but multiple sites track it, and obviously do not use the same criteria because pressure stats vary substantially by site.

He should have been moved two years ago. Not a Sp. Teams stalwart. He missed tackles, out of his containment area etc.

NO we said the Gary pick was mind boggling stupid and that he was a second round prediction by the analyst who werent high on him either. Wow were so lucky that this is his contract year and he will finally show up. I got money that says he plays lights out this year, tells the pack adios and leaves for the big bucks.
He reminds me of Perry from day one and still does. Perry had a great 4th year.

I'll take some of that money as you obviously don't understand how the 5th year option works. There will be no "adios" after this year.

I wish him luck. He played hard despite his limitations. Hopefully, he catches on elsewhere.
I assume a guy like Isiah McDuffie made the cut necessary.

Certainly no surprise - even if he is eligible for the PS I don't believe the Packers will bring him back. He just never developed from his rookie season and seemed like he just didn't have the instincts for football. All too often in the wrong hole or washed out of plays. The early cut gives him a better chance of catching on with another team. Wish him well in his future endeavors.

Agree. This came down to Barnes vs Summers. Barnes can play ILB. I think McDuffie is #3, but Barnes is a heck of a #4 ILB...for the Pack! (can't believe I am typing this after so many years of sub par ILB play)

Yeah, I think the four ILBs were pretty clear cut (backups being Barnes and McDuffie). And you are right, they finally have quality ILBs after a long stretch of poor ILB play.

Here's one 7th rounder that won't make the 53.
I had hopes for Ty...smart and fast with good size. Those attributes helped him on the perennially poor STs. But the former college QB just was not an ILB. And here is that topic again...tackling...Ty was not very good at it.
Walker is very good at it...Campbell is. McDuffie is a thumper too. All three have excellent speed. The heaviest thumper of all is Barnes...he can really bring it. He's just not as good in coverage and too often gets blocked out. But these 4 guys can play ILB and McDuffie and Barnes can replace Ty's ST snaps.
Good luck Ty. Thanks for your hard work and professionalism.

Ty was always one of the better/consistent Packer contributors on our special teams. On a personal note, in the fall of 2019, a family member of Ty's told him about my battle with Stage IV cancer. I don't know Ty from Adam. Mr. Summers added me to his Team prayer meeting which he holds weekly. Almost 3 years later, I'm still fighting the fight. Thank you for your strong faith, Ty Summers. I pray you continue to succeed playing this wonderful game. I know you will be successful in whatever you do.

Sometimes we get so focused on these guys just being football players and forget they have regular lives just like the rest of us. Sounds like he's a great guy.
Keep up the fight!!

BAMABADGER, I'm two months plus one day away from emergency surgery for a torn aorta that required a helicopter ride between two hospitals to keep me alive -- and am gradually getting stronger, though not there yet.
Your cancer sounds much more prolonged and difficult and trying, and I pray with all my heart for God to bless you in body and soul.
Thanks for sharing about the goodness of Ty Summers, too, which in the process revealed in a subtle but solid way good character within yourself.
Please say a prayer for me.

The fact that we’re strong enough to be releasing guys like this speaks volumes. He’ll be on somebody’s roster this season.

As much as I liked the guy, I knew coming into the weekend that he was not going to make the final cut. Three years with the team and aside from one spot start, he was never able to break into the weekly line up. That says a lot. He just didn't do anything noteworthy during this camp to warrant keeping him around. I'm glad that they released him now so he has a chance to maybe catch on with someone else. Wherever he lands, I'm not expecting him to move beyond ST guru.

I have a pathfinder that is covered with Packer magnets and stickers; —it looks like Packer advertising company.
Ty Summer’s grandfather, who resides in the same city as I, has noticed my vehicle and twice stopped me to advise his grandson plays for the packers. I’m saddened for Ty and his very proud grandfather. Best regards for his future.
