Derek Carr Gets an A for Effort

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr makes a solid effort to pitch Packers wideout Davante Adams.

Derek Carr is doing his best to lobby for Green Bay Packers star receiver Davante Adams. Meanwhile, the Packers are reportedly working on a massive deal to retain one of the league’s best wideouts. At least Carr gets an A effort.

“I think it would unlock some things in both of us that people haven’t seen yet,” Carr said in an interview with Fresno TV station ABC30. “I’m always open to that and I will be recruiting very hard. When that time comes, it will be a full-court press.”

Carr and Adams are very close after they formed a relationship while playing together at Fresno State.

In the past, Adams has stated that he hopes to remain in Green Bay, but he will become a free agent at the end of next season. Allowing Adams to walk would be a colossal mistake. Luckily, the Packers appear keen on not letting that happen.

Adams humored Carr’s comments by saying, "It would be a dream to play with him, I'm a Packer now until the point where we make that decision, we'll see what happens."

In this utopia, Carr hopes Adams will join forces with him in Las Vegas as a member of the Raiders, which is interesting considering that Carr’s future with the organization is persistently questioned.

Almost annually, it seems as though trade rumors involving Carr begin circulating at season's end. Earlier this year, it was rumored that multiple teams inquired about the 30-year-old quarterback, but the Raiders were unlikely to move on.

Carr may want Adams to sign with the Raiders, but would he even be around much longer after the deal is done? His current contract will expire after the 2022 season. Carr has yet to play in a playoff game through his first seven seasons, and head coach Jon Gruden is desperately trying to field a winning team.

Carr has started all 48 games since Gruden was re-hired in 2018. Together the two have a record of 19-29 and are coming off an 8-8 season with the eighth overall offense.

The quarterback recently said he would “quit football” if he had to play for somebody else. Las Vegas remains committed to Carr for the time being as general manager Mike Mayock said this offseason that he and Gruden were shoulder to shoulder in pounding the table for Carr. However, another losing season or missed postseason could change those sentiments rather quickly.

Carr would obviously love a shot at joining forces with his former college receiver, who is now a star NFL player. But first, he may want to focus on playing well to make that even a remote possibility. If things go south for Carr and Las Vegas in 2021, he may end up starting over with a new franchise—turning a reunion with Adams into nothing more than a pipedream.

If #12 returns there is near zero chance DA leaves. And if he doesn't, I expect DA and Love will develop a prolific on and off field relationship, and the chance of leaving will still be very low. Adams ability to get open will get targets from Love.

The Packers are already in discussions with team Davante. He will be one of the highest paid players in the NFL wearing Green and Gold.

I just got here, so don't look at me. I suppose the downvotes are due to simple disagreement, though it would be nice if that were expressed in a comment.

I've always thought AR would return in 2021. I don't think that means anything about Adams signing an extension. I think it is highly likely that AR will not be a Packer in 2022. How does Adams feel about that? IDK.

GB can't win a bidding war with some teams even if they trade AR. Benefits from disability policies if the premium is paid with after tax dollars are not taxable, IIRC. So Adams could return to GB on his current deal and take out a $15M policy to protect his likely $30M guaranteed money deal on his 3rd contract.

I also don't know if Adams would remain a prolific WR with Love at QB. Maybe, but it is hard to see him getting more prolific: I mean, he's been pretty prolific lately. That might depend on what Adams sees from Love in TC.

Carr’s best (only) chance of being an Adam’s teammate is to end up as Love’s clipboard holder in the inevitable AR trade.

As regards Carr, I’ve always thought he was a pretty decent QB. If you protect him and give him some help, he’ll put points on the board.

As regards the Raiduhs commitment……the foreseeable future is never as long as you think.

As regards Davante Adams, he’ll draw a bunch of double teams for us and still catch 90+ passes. Then he’ll leave in FA and we’ll spend a high draft pick on a WR to go along with Amari Rodgers and MVS. The money we save will be used to extend some younger guys.

Before Rodgers signed his most recent extension, I suggested Rodgers be shipped to then Oakland for Derek Carr and other considerations.

That trade makes sense and I think Carr would do well in MLF's offense. It would give Love more time to develop.

I would also like to see the clash of enormous egos between AR and Chucky Gruden.

He's staying for now. James Jones was correct.

Funny but if you have listened to chucky, he would bend over backwards if AR came there. why? Cause he would finally has the elite qb he wants, and would do anything to make sure he is looked after. You know what Gruden truly IMO, is to secure his legacy, and he know deep down that people still talk about his TB SB and say it was Dungy team. Its hilarious to how people hate on AR ego when its been there since day 1. Plus for the most part he has been that team first guy.

GB has been developing some top tier talent, and thus is challenged to retain them. Its a great problem to have, but a problem still. Impressive given that they pick in the bottom cluster of draft order. Meanwhile the Detros, jetsies, and other high pickers don't ever seem to have trouble with cap space, and spend on FA. Still some love here for Ted Thompson though his time had passed him by, and Gute so far is doing a noble job at the Draft and Develop. Yes, spend the money on DA. High quality talent that has equal quality character don't grow like grapes.

A couple yrs with Carr , compared to 7? yrs with Rodgers. Who do you think he's closer to?

As a QB, would he rather have Rodgers or Carr? Or even Carr vs Love?

If he goes to the Raiders it's all about the Benjamins!

Adams is sart enough to know that Carr future in Las Vegas is tenuous at best. If Adams leaves GB. it will be to either follow Rodgers or to connect with a QB who can help him reach the HOF.

Rodgers did not opt out today which tells me that he wants to play in 2021. Opting out would have been financially beneficial to him and to the Packers and much better than holding out for Rodgers specifically. If money was a factor he would have opted out. He is either expecting to be traded or intending to play for the Packers. At least that's how I see it at this point. Thanks, Since '61

If he wanted to be moved they would have cashed in on draft day. I would pink slip Murphy w/ his retirement package and let low ball try his hand working for Snyder. Seems like a fair deal. Play to Win. Some of the Fans showed their colors. Not in the mood to return to the 70's show.

Just a friendly “What if’s” going on between two ex teammates. Of course the media has to make a big deal about it. And it worked.

You know what, I trust Brian Gutekunst. I believe he's earned that. None of us know exactly why he decided to draft Jordan Love. Maybe he could sense a rift forming with Rodgers, I mean the quote attributed to Mark Murphy "don't be the problem Aaron" didn't just come from nowhere. Maybe he was being a problem. We all know he made a big deal out of the audible thing so maybe he was quite prickly and not easy to work with or maybe he saw his enormous cap numbers and his declining skills (until his resurgence last year) and thought it was better to find a replacement sooner than later. Aaron in his only public comments has said "its never been about the draft pick, he loves Jordan Love" so we know it goes deeper than that. He also said he loves GB, the fans and the coaching staff, so that leaves Gute, Murphy and Ball as the ones he has issues with.

Whatever the case may be here we are, we now have 3 former 1st round picks at QB on the roster. 1 who is mad and threatening to never play for GB again, 1 who is maybe too green to start for a contending team and another who gets no respect. That's a pretty good collection of players. Training camp and the preseason will determine who starts, I can live with that.

If Gute decides that Adam's is worthy of an extention and can make it happen then great if not than maybe he can trade him at the trade deadline for more than the late 3rd round pick that they would get for letting him walk next year. That could free up the money to re-sign, Lazard, MVS and possibly Tonyan and give them a draft pick to find Adam's successor. Gute gets paid the big bucks to make these decisions and like I said I trust him to make the right decisions. Time will tell I guess.
