Despite lone miss, Mason Crosby helped Packers stay afloat vs Vikings

-- For as many positives as there are to take away from Sunday's tie at Lambeau Field, Mason Crosby certainly has to be near the top of the list.

The Green Bay Packers' all-time leading scorer set a new career high in field goals attempted in a single game with the six he lined up for against the Minnesota Vikings. He was 5-for-5 up until the closing seconds of the game with a chance to secure the victory and a 2-0 start to the season.

He was also one of the biggest reasons why the Packers were even in control of the game at the times that they were with a red zone offense that went 1-for-5.

"Everything seemed fine," Crosby told Packers.com of the holding operations prior to his 52-yard attempt. "Had a great day up to that point. It’s disappointing not to come through there for the team. We’ll just keep working and making sure that we’re better next week."

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers engineered four plays in less than 31 seconds -- one of them being a spike to stop the clock -- to work down the field and get into field goal range for Crosby. The field goal unit just couldn't finish the job; a rarity for Crosby.

"It’s gross. I hate losing," Crosby said. "Ties are just weird, you just don’t get them a lot. It’s a weird feeling, trying to process through how it all went. A lot of really good things out there on both sides of the ball, we’ll just evaluate this one and learn from it."

It was the first time the Packers had tied in a game since the 2013 season -- also against the Vikings -- when Matt Flynn was the starting quarterback. However, they had a one-legged Rodgers for this contest after he had dealt with swelling and slight pain in his left knee throughout the course of the week.

Still, the Packers had multiple opportunities to beat arguably the best defense in the league.

Since 2008, the Packers were 12-2 entering Sunday when Crosby attempted four-or-more field goals in a game. That record, obviously, tacks on an additional "1" at the end of it after the day's events.

Complete with a rookie long-snapper and rookie placeholder in Hunter Bradley and JK Scott, respectively, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer called a timeout just as Crosby booted the first kick through the uprights in an effort to ice him.

"I wasn’t thinking about that," Crosby said. "Just trying to execute the kick. Playing for a little left-to-right movement, must’ve just held it over there a little too much."

While Crosby's day didn't end as planned, Vikings rookie kicker Daniel Carlson may have had to find an alternate way back to Minnesota after a miserable showing on Sunday.

Carlson, holding Vikings fans captive with a dismal performance, was 0-for-3 on his field goal attempts, including missing two in the overtime period. One of which that would've won the game in the final seconds for the Vikings, but instead, left both teams with a tie on their records.

Crosby, a 12-year veteran and having already achieved the ultimate pinnacle of his position by winning a Super Bowl and booting through many a game-winning kick, did talk to Carlson after the game and offer his own sound choice of words.

"He’s young. Just keep his head up. Obviously had a tough day there. ... That’s a tough one for him, and he’ll have to learn from that and process through. Hopefully, as a young guy, he can do that."

Not Crosby’s fault that we did not win.

No way!

The kicking unit as a whole is an asset (perhaps a premature call on Scott, but he punted really well today).

I agree, Coldworld. Asking Crosby to kick two 52 yarders in a row is tough. He made the first one. That game should have been way over and Cosby should not have had to kick in OT.

Our kicking and punting game are in good hands

I just threw out a bunch of old ties, but I'll keep this new one over an "L".

Effectively the refs took the game away from GB, but Minn wouldn't take it.

I don't know why but I'd take Jan Stenerud over Crosby to make a game winning kick. Jan always seemed to come thru in the clutch but in those days I drank alot and I could have a bad memory.

Having said that, I love Crosby. Been a great kicker for this team for over a decade. MM stuck with him when everyone wanted him cut a few years ago. Always reminded me of Randy Travis with that southern Texan accent.

Packers need to worry more about their safety play than their kicking game. Brice was responsible for over the top coverage on two Viking TD's. The one to Diggs on the bomb he got turned around and never made it to his responsibility in time, and on Thielen's TD he was slow to react and showed late knocking Alexander out of the play. He is definitely no Earl Thomas that's for sure.

I think that this has always been the knock on Brice as you read his scouting reports. He's a downhill safety and a hitter who runs fast and chases the ball well, but lacks flexibility, instincts, and coverage skills. This is--at least in part (IIRC he had some injuries in college)--why a guy who runs like he does wasn't drafted.

I've calmed down some but Crosby is not to blame here.

We can say "We were robbed" by the the refs but the Vikings had a few calls go against them too. BUT the call against Kendricks WASN'T like the Matthews call IMO. Kendricks actually picked and drove Rodgers into the ground. Matthews actually put I believe his left arm down to cushion the hit on Cousins. THAT play was the epitome of "Bang-Bang".

The TD by Jimmy Graham which was called back because of the holding call against Taylor was actually worse IMO. I thought the D-Linemen "Sold It" more than anything. That would have broke the Vikings and it should have been a TD.

Crosby was a beast Sunday afternoon and I was actually shocked he missed it. When the first attempt barely went inside the left upright I figured he would try and adjust a little to make sure it didn't go wide. So much for figuring.

The Packers were missing a lot of speed on the field in the 2nd half which IMO would have made all the difference in the world. King is out AGAIN (Wish you were here TJ Watt). Josh Jones is still out and Burks hasn't recovered from (only in GB) his dislocated shoulder while WARMING UP.

Obviously I''d rather have TD's in the Red Zone but I'll take 5-6 from Crosby everyday. Lets just miss the first one instead of the last one in the future..If you have to miss at all.

Losing King really hurt the defense. In his place they put House in for whatever reason, which I can not figure out why he was in there over Jackson. But then House gives up the long TD play. After that House wasn't on the field anymore.
Had King been in there I honestly doubt that play happens.

The way House played that was unbelievable. But where the hell was the Safety help on the play. Once again the Packers Safeties are in the comments for the wrong reason. Brice wasn't helping there and on the Thielin TD he was late again. Should have at least deflected it IMO.

PLEASE CALL ERIC REID!! I mean how much more do you have to see Gute?

Edit...Brice isn't the answer. He's a nice depth piece but he's not a starter.

No doubt that Brice didn't play that well at all!

I really don't get what happened on that Thielin TD. 2 guys there and neither of them touch the ball.

That stuff doesn't bother me as much as having House in there over Jackson. Jackson has proved to be better. Why was House in there to begin with? That decision IMO, was worse then the play over Brice.

Reid would make a difference no doubt. But I'm not sure if he is a center field type of Safety. I know he is great more in the box.

Jaire Alexander was in and out of the lineup in the second half with cramps. King was out. I'd have to look at the replay to see who was on the field with him, but if you're down 2 CBs, House is up.

Agree, we need more help. So far this D is only slightly better than previous years, still time though.

With 31 seconds left in the game, no timeouts and a gimpy QB, just the fact that they moved the ball about 45 +/- yards to get a chance at a GW FG was impressive.

That shouldn't go unnoticed!

That's a GREAT point RC. When they ran the ball I thought really Mike, really? But then on one leg Rodgers drives them down to FG range against what that motor mouth Charles Davis kept calling them the #1 defense in the NFL. Bite me Davis.

Kudos to the Packers receivers for getting them in range.

Where is Mike Daniels? The one play he made he let him go, [probably because he's afraid of getting a penalty. Congratulations to the NFL and Rodger Goodell...You've taken the greatest sport in the world and made it borderline unwatchable.

That call against Matthews. The call against Taylor. The call against Adams...These are all perfect examples of WHY the ratings are down in the NFL. Can't wait to see them after this year. Their losing viewers each and every week.

Honestly I think they were just going to try and run the clock out but when Williams got that huge gain on the ground they said screw it, lets go for it.

I wish Graham would have been more aware of the time and where everyone was at. He could have probably ran for another 5+ yards. Perhaps more. But still a great job to get out of bounds.

Daniels said that he thought Cousins threw the ball and he didn't want to get penalty. Can't blame him there. I guess he just needs to hold onto the QB the whole time. Not let him go?

Refs should not be the storyline of games! That call against Mathews cost the Packers the game!
yes the other calls were bad. The one cost the Packers a TD, which is also bad, but that one against Mathews, gets no worse then that.

The last time a call cost the Packes a win was with the fake refs. The next week they brought the real refs back. This week it cost the Packers a win. I really wish this would force the NFL to use Replay on those plays at the very least in the final 2-5 minutes of the game!

They have access to review, USE IT! Get the Call RIGHT!

Hey guys...Did anyone notice the block by Marcedes Lewis on the nice run by Montgomery around the right end?

Did anyone notice Lewis STILL isn't on the field nearly enough?

Will McCarthy notice this week the Packers running game actually works on plays when Lewis is in the game?

Yes! The guy is a beast, and I don't get why he's not on the field more. I can't recall exactly when it was in the game, but Bulaga had just given up a sack, and the next play Lewis was lined up next to Bulaga. Set the edge for a nice gain.

I thought Bakhtiari did a nice job yesterday, too.
