Devonte Wyatt Seems To Be Finding Form Again
Devonte Wyatt hasn't looked the same since returning from injury, but signs of a turnaround have started to flash.

After looking like a major breakout was in the works for Devonte Wyatt, including three sacks in the Green Bay Packers first three games, Wyatt has battled through injury and recent sightings as the missing person on the milk carton.
After hitting the shelf from weeks five through seven with an ankle injury, Wyatt returned to receive his usual snap share but not his normal production. As the Packers begin their December playoff push, with the team hitting stride in all facets, a cherry on top would be to get Wyatt producing how he was earlier this season.
After finishing last year with the 20th most pressures among interior defensive linemen (48), including playoffs, and 26 defensive stops on 550 snaps, Wyatt was geared up for a full breakout in year three. In a juicy role next to Kenny Clark, in a system more designed to maximize Wyatt's strengths, all signals were a go after three weeks. Unfortunately, he sustained the ankle injury in week four, and ever since then, something has not been right with Wyatt.
The knock on Wyatt was that he was not finishing plays in his first two years, a big reason why he only racked up 5.5 sacks last season despite regular explosive entrances into the backfield. He also struggled mightily in run defense under previous coordinator Joe Barry, which was a big reason for T.J. Slaton's emergence, who finished with 74 more regular season snaps than Wyatt in 2023.
But while Wyatt picked up where he left off in terms of being a pass-rush menace, his improvement in run defense and his actual finishing of plays stood out the most in his development earlier this season.
But since returning to play in week eight, Wyatt has only had three total tackles, one QB hit, zero sacks, and zero tackles for loss. He is now PFF's 67th-graded interior defensive lineman (56.4) with at least 200 snaps and 57th in pass rush grade. Yet, somehow, he still has more sacks (3) than Clark and Slaton combined (2).
Besides the injury, the only real noticeable change that could be impacting Wyatt's production is Colby Wooden's return to the shuffle. Since getting more defensive snaps while Wyatt was out, Wooden has logged roughly 30% of the defensive snaps, compared to a 0% snap share the first four weeks.
That said, with Preston Smith gone, it seems Jeff Hafley is mixing up his fronts more often, getting a wide range of players steadily involved. Clark, Wyatt, Slaton, and Brooks have all been logging over 35% of the snap count on defense since the bye week, with Wooden and Brenton Cox Jr. also seeing a significant uptick in play.
Wyatt did have some flashes against the Bears in week 11. Still, he followed that up with surprisingly only 17 snaps against the 49ers before looking like maybe a turnaround is on the horizon after registering three pressures against Miami.
And it would be a perfect time to do so, as the Packers face a challenging road ahead to clinch an advantageous playoff spot. The team seems to be clicking at the right time, with even Quay Walker playing arguably the best football of his career over the past few weeks. As the Packers front seven has been showing up in the backfield more often as of late, having Wyatt continuing to reclaim his form from earlier this season, which finally showed up again in weeks 12 and 13, would be a massive jolt. And the Packers need it.
Green Bay has only logged 3.5 sacks all season from interior defensive linemen not named Wyatt, including only two sacks since week five when Wyatt hit the shelf with an injury. Similar to Quarterback Jordan Love, if Wyatt is to the point where the injury is behind him, having him back at full strength will work wonders for the Packers' defense.
His run defense has slipped back into previous worrisome categories as he's got back on track, but over the last two games, he's posted his two best pass rush grades of the season by accumulating five pressures and four hurries. Now it's about getting home to the quarterback again if he has the full might of his 300-pound, athletic freakishness back in full effect.
With fellow former Georgia Bulldog Eric Stokes struggling mightily in coverage this season and star corner Jaire Alexander battling his own injuries, the Packers' secondary would benefit from the pass rush continuing to come through for them as it has these past few games. Wyatt plays a significant role as someone who has proven difficult to keep out of the backfield. While Clark is finally in the sack column and Brooks showing up a bit more, when Wyatt has been at full health, he's been hands down been the most disruptive interior pass rusher for the Packers this season.
What a perfect time for Wyatt to get back on track, too, as the Packers have to decide this offseason if they want to pay Wyatt a $13.1 million fifth-year option. While it seemed like a sure bet early on, Wyatt's ankle injury clearly took a toll on his performance, and it will likely take a big statement from him in their remaining games to earn the contract.

I guess they better sign him to that 5th year. He won't be playing for 13.1 for long or for anybody else. He and Quay are going to just start their "Prime" on Thursday.

Wyatt is the most over-rated Packer on the DL.
How many fans would draft this guy now?
We need better and a guy who stays in the line-up.

IMHO, if you're calling someone over-rated, you have to put it in context. Who is rating them and what standards are being used? Otherwise, it is a worthless description. Not sure what you mean by "who stays in the line-up?" He's missed very few games due to injury, if that's your concern.
Not sure where he's at this year, but in November of last year, "Packers’ Devonte Wyatt quietly has the 4th highest pressure rate among all D-Linemen in the NFL (16.0%)."
So that's pretty good right? 4th in the entire league?

Play after injury should always be looked at in context of what went before. If anything, especially in the trenches. Wyatt was looking much improved. Then he got hurt. Since then I’ve not seen him look the same. Despite the premise of the article, seeing is believing, but also recalling he had an ankle injury that may be the reason.
Just because he can play doesn’t mean he’s got the same burst or flexibility, in a big man, these can take time to return. So I’ve not seen anything yet, but I’m not writing off the possibility of him returning to early season effectiveness and that he’s co truing but hindered.
One thing that annoys me is playing players that are reinjury risks when we don’t absolutely have to, but a bigger one is lambasting players for playing hindered to help the team when the risk of aggravation is not significant. Usually, given the almost total lack of real information from players and teams in such situations at the time, we only find out much later, through improved performance or post season comments. Judging Wyatt accurately is therefore going to take future hindsight and patience.

Saleh will be the Bears new head coach ... put it in writing
Wyatt was slowed by a high ankle sprang needed help walking to the locker room, stretched ankle ligaments, you cant do much training with those. DL are at a premium in the NFL and Clark is reaching the end of his career they need Wyatt and will sign his option IMHO

No chance Saleh goes to the Bares. He is not even being mentioned. If the OC from Detroit isn't interested, the interim guy, Thomas Brown, has a solid chance. They like him.

Do you honestly think any coach will thrive with that GM? We’ve argued about the real truth of the turnaround in Detroit, but the salient thing there was that they did not just bring in Campbell but a GM whose drafting has been radically better in terms of roster construction and quality.
No GM can win without a good coaching staff and no coach can thrive without a good overall roster. Why do I always think of Jerry Jones when I say that? In fairness, the Cardinals have 50 more years of failure to grasp that than Dallas.

I think maybe we shouldn't be drafting Georgia kids so heavily. Most of them, on defense anyway, are only so powerful as a group. Start piecing them out and they aren't the studs they looked like on Saturdays. RAS is like PFF, it only tells you half the story.

Well Wyatt, Walker and Stokes are it recently, except Bullard this year and he looks like he fits in the NFL. BTW, Stokes only gave up 2 catches for 7 yards against Miami's vaunted skill players, so that's trending the right direction.

I sincerely appreciate and admire your optimism, but one or two games of bad or good play certainly isn't a trend. I think a trend would be more like 5-6 games in a row (They set their bars pretty low, so anything good they do looks better than it maybe is). I was stoked about these 3 1st round Georgia picks too. Walker and Wyatt are nice players, but they sure aren't playing like 1st round picks (and that unfortunately has been their trend). Stokes isn't even close to a 1st round producer. I like Bullard. He plays a tough position. But he wasn't a 1st round pick and is a rookie. There's much more to forgive there. Anyway, I would absolutely love to be completely wrong.

with these guys playing at a substandard level it's very difficult to imagine a scenario where the Packers have only lost 3 and at that to the top three teams in the league standings.
how are these miracles taking place, please explain. i also regularly read people telling me that the starting center is easily replaced, that the right guard is a scrub, and that the long snapper is a short timer. How exactly did these 9 wins occur, and what to which totem do I pray to have this divine intercession continue?

If Stokes is allowed to play press, then he’s able to use what got him drafted. If you expect him to play off and react successfully then you might as well play a PS corner. The same is true of all but Jaire on the roster, but in Stokes’ case, particularly so in terms of build and athleticism, though Valentine is close. Rochell might be the closest to having the tools to play off apart from Jaire, but he’s yet to get a defensive snap.
Most of our roster likely do best in press man, but press is the key not man or Zone. We like bigger corners for their length and ability to redirect. Off coverage makes those attributes moot and size is a disadvantage typically when it comes to burst and short are agility. I hope this was Hafley coming to terms with the tools he has, not a passing fortunate confluence of tactics and player fit.

And while I'm not in the let's kick Barry crowd, this is the one thing that is fair criticism of the Barry/MLF defenses. We brought in guys to play an aggressive style and then the orders from the top were to keep play in front of them and to play off.
A thing I find funny is how many here hold Rasul Douglass up as some sort of ideal corner, and then bitch about playing off coverage (not referring to you Coldworld). Douglass is a zone corner.

You are such an adorable little troll.
He was indeed arrested in February of 2020, and the case was dismissed in July. Per the Augusta Chronicle:
"The misdemeanor charge against Georgia football defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt stemming from a February incident with a female on campus was dismissed earlier this month.
The prosecution in the case entered a nolle prosequi that terminated the criminal trespass to property charge.
“After carefully reviewing the evidence and consulting with the alleged victim, we decided to dismiss the case in the interests of justice,” Athens-Clarke County Solicitor General C.R. Chisholm said Friday via email to the Athens Banner-Herald.
The case was resolved on June 12 in State Court of Athens-Clarke County.
Police said Wyatt, a senior, kicked in a female’s exterior apartment door in McWhorter Hall multiple times on Feb. 21 to force it open. That came after an argument at the player’s Vandiver Hall dorm room. Neither Wyatt nor the female, who had lived together, said they feared for their safety."
If only visionary NFL icon Bob Saleh had been on board to steer hapless Brian Gutekunst away from this low-character, non-first-round-pic-worthy criminal! Surely a failed NFL Head Coach with a career 20-36 record would have saved us all this grief!
Greg is correct. Much was said about the potential for a fall in the draft, but that didn't occur, except in your head. Wyatt was drafted where he was projected to be taken.
What's next? Maybe a review of learned helplessness for the folks who missed it last time? Or, how about what you're vibing on or feeling about LaFleur's innate lack of curiosity.

This too is available in the internet. There wouldn’t be much of a college or NFL game if that constitutes bad character.

Kind of hard to adapt strategies against a Dline that throws 8 really good players at you. Clark, Gary, Wyatt, Van Ness, Slaton, Brooks, Enagbare, Wooden....
It's that time of year when having a deep rotation that has kept people rested and healthy is really going to pay off for this Dline.

Or, you could let him go after 2025. Or you could trade him this offseason. Based on what I've seen from Stokes this season, I don't think you want guys playing for you that are pissed that they didn't get a 5th year offer.
I think he's a good solid piece, and he's only going to cost us $4M next year. The downside is that he's kind of an older guy. The Packers didn't draft him until he was 24. He'll be 27 next season. Do you want him on the line and making big bucks when he's 30? Because this is your chance if you do. I'm kind of reluctant to extend the 5th year deal at a cost greater than his last four years put together. Especially when we have guys we'll want to resign.
If they do give him the 13.1,they could add that into the 4 he's already got coming and making it two years for $17M.
WestCoastPackerBacker
December 04, 2024 at 03:12 pm
Pretty big assumption to say Stokes' play is related to not getting the 5th year extension. He's got to understand that injuries are a big (biggest?) reason for that, and try to prove he's worth it. Since, you know, it's a contract year for him. I really don't think he thinks that way.
Leatherhead
December 04, 2024 at 03:54 pm
WCPB, I'm just calling this as I see it. And really, I don't blame him. He came in and had a solid rookie year, but he's been hurt ever since. He didn't get the extension, he's going to be a FA after a few more games, and he's going to be worth more in FA if he doesn't finish this season on the IR.
I've seen repeated examples this year where he......eschewed...contact. He's a little over six feet, a little under 200 lbs, he covers, and he'll tackle the guy he's covering, but he's not going to come up and challenge the runner., He's 9th on the team in tackles, but rarely assists.
He's protecting himself. He's doing his job but he's trying not to break himself doing it. We need two corners on the field, and with Alexander frequently injured, it's been Stokes and Nixon. The alternative(s) are Valentine and Ballantine. It's not like we have a lot of options, but I'd rather play somebody else who'll be here next year.
Bitternotsour
December 04, 2024 at 05:26 pm
Objection, speculative.
I can provide another highly likely explanation, that he hasn't yet been fit since his return and that he's playing on duct tape and baling wire. Just because a guy can suit up doesn't make him fully fit.
LLCHESTY
December 04, 2024 at 11:13 pm
A possible 3rd explanation is he wasn't super agile to start out with, more straight line fast than quick. If the cumulative injuries made even less agile he could get hung out to dry on sudden changes in direction. That's when he sticks out to me anyway. He has been playing a bit better the last couple of weeks so maybe there's hope yet but he's most likely somewhere else next year.

Stokes has given an indication of unhappiness? News to me, he seemed just happy to be able to get out there. He may not have been good but he knew he hadn’t been able to play after a bad injury and tough return attempt last year.
Please point me to some evidence that Stokes is a malcontent? If you don’t have any then shame on you for passing off fiction as accepted fact: gossip mongering at its worst.
As to Wyatt, let’s see if his play reascends as he gets further from his ankle injury. This is a question better considered after the season had ended. There is plenty of football yet to be played.

December 05, 2024 at 03:51 pm
This is funny coming from the King of Innuendo.
Believe what you want. I believe that he's avoiding contact because I'm seeing it. Whether he was not content with not receiving a multi-million$$ 2nd contract, that's something you'll have to decide or yourself.
Bitternotsour
December 05, 2024 at 05:30 pm

Leatherhead
December 05, 2024 at 05:51 pm
I thought I came right out and said it. No innuendo intended. I think he's avoiding collisions. As I've said, he's probably our second best cover guy at corner.
Stokes won't be here next year. 5 more regular season games. If he can just finish the season without jacking himself up, he'll get much better FA offers than if he's on IR again. I wish him the best, but right now, I'd rather play Valentine more because Valentine WILL be back next year, and he doesn't avoid contact.
