Does It Make Sense To Extend Allen Lazard?

The wide receiver has signed his RFA tender

After months of questions and speculation, Allen Lazard has finally signed his second-round restricted free agent tender and is going to play for the Green Bay Packers in 2022 for $ 3.986 million. That was the obvious part.

First, it was improbable that a team would give Lazard a contract the Packers would refuse to match, plus be willing to pay Green Bay a second-round pick. Then, the time for other teams to give him an offer sheet had passed. Therefore, Lazard's only option was to play for the Packers. The delay to sign the tender was just a matter of possible negotiations for a new contract, and also a way for him to not attend mandatory minicamp without fines.

Now, here comes the tough questions. The first one is if the Packers will restructure Lazard's current deal in order to open up cap space this year. And the second one is if the team considers a long-term extension to secure the wide receiver services for future years - something that can be more important after trading Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders and losing Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency. So, let's take a look at the possible scenarios.

1) Keep it as it is

The Packers are in a relatively comfortable situation cap-wise this year. If the idea is to keep this roster and there isn't any major free agent addition left, Green Bay can easily enter the season with the current $ 17 million in cap space to operate in-season minor moves, such as placing injured players on IR and promoting practice squad players. It's even possible to sign one or two inexpensive outside free agents.

That decision wouldn't open up any cap space this year and it would keep Lazard's hit at $ 3.986 million. The good news is that there wouldn't be any dead money left for future seasons, so the Packers would have total flexibility to give Lazard a new contract or let him leave without remnants.

2) Restructure

If the Packers want to open up cap space this year in order to make a big move and the parties don't want to reach a long-term agreement, it's possible to formulate a contract restructure.

The Packers could reduce Lazard’s base salary to the minimum of $ 935,000. Then, they would convert the remaining $3.051 million into a signing bonus. Adding four void years, Green Bay could prorate this amount, opening up $2.44 million in cap space this year. The problem, though, is that the prorated amount would count towards the 2023 salary cap, unless the player and team reach an extension before the void date. In this case, the prorated amount will remain stretched, but it would still be extra $610,000 per year for the next four seasons in cap hit.

3) Extension

The third option is to give Lazard a long-term extension. This scenario could also be used to lower his cap hit this year, while guaranteeing his presence on the roster moving forward. According to Spotrac, Lazard's current market value is a $ 7.7 million average per year (on a 3-year, $ 23.26 million total deal).

For Lazard, though, it doesn't make that much sense to sign this deal now, considering he will have a chance to be a primary receiving option this year and go to the market next offseason as an unrestricted free agent. Therefore, the Packers would have to pay a little more in order to satisfy these circumstances. Maybe a 3-year, $ 27 million contract ($ 9 million per year) is a solid enough offer.

As always, the Packers wouldn't give the player any guarantee beyond the first year. The new $ 27 million would be added to the current $ 3.986, so it would be in reality a four-year, $ 30.986 million deal. His signing bonus could be around $ 10 million, the same value Nelson Agholor got from the New England Patriots with similar previous production.

2022
Signing bonus: $ 2 million
Base salary: $ 935k
Cap hit: $ 2.935 million (1.051M in cap savings this year)

2023
Signing bonus: $ 2 million
Roster bonus: $ 4 million (this part could be converted into a signing bonus to prorate it again)
Base salary: $ 1.1 million
Cap hit: $ 7.1 million

2024
Signing bonus: $ 2 million
Base salary: $ 7 million
Cap hit: $ 9 million

2025
Signing bonus: $ 2 million
Base salary: $ 7.951 million
Cap hit: $ 9.951 million

2026 (Void year for cap purposes)
Signing bonus: $ 2 million

While there is merit to the extension idea, it probably is better for both sides to let this year play out. For the Packers, because they will have more data and film to evaluate Lazard's value - and also more information about the young receivers' impact. For the player, he will have a chance to put up career high numbers and go to the market without restrictions to extract the highest possible value.

Personally I’d see how things shake out over the first half of this season in terms of both availability and performance of Lazard and how the newcomers are doing. That would be my plan were I Lazard too. He has a chance to dramatically increase his value as this offense is shaped.

It's now 2 seasons in a row that Lazard has been an 'off-season dissenter'.

He may well see more targets this coming season, but if his YAC and contested catch %'s aren't also increasing, then he may well have found his ceiling.

I agree, let things shake out....... but the WR market is a bubble at the moment, so I guess he's trying to cash in while the market is like it is.

ADDIT:

His work off the ball must not be understated (and I want to call that out - he does a fantastic job there), but at the end of the day, if he desires the big payday then he also has the follow Kupp's lead and be well rounded with the ball in hand.

I think you've got it about right, Wendell. One of the things that I keep thinking about is that Lazard fits a specific niche in the Packers' offense as a big-bodied, physical WR. After several years of the Packers being tall on the outside, they've moved to more mainstream 6-1/6-2 WR this season. They really don't have anyone else like him on the roster...the closest parallel (depending on whether the HW info on the Packers website is correct) might be Bob Tonyan. Watson is 20 pounds smaller. So they must be thinking they can accomplish the same things with smaller guys, or that they really only need one or two big bodied guys.

There are also 3 reasons why they shouldn't extend Lazard just yet: Watson, Doubs, and Toure. While it's possible Cobb and Watkins return in 2023 (especially if ARod is still around), I don't expect it at this point. If they get two from that rookie group to be regular contributors, that would be pretty good. Three would be beating the odds in terms of draft return. So if two of those three guys show promise, and AmRod plays better, that's 4 WR going forward that they can write into the regular rotation in 2023. They'll still likely be in the draft market for a WR in 2023...maybe they're looking at it and saying they don't want to put $$ into Lazard until they know what they've got in those four young WR. They might be saying that Lazard is very replaceable, or feel that they can do better.

A good summation Wendell and Dobber. The only other thing to add is the possibility that they still may add a free agent vet . I am especially think O j Beckham. They almost did a while back and he may add as n extra dimension later in the season and during a playoff run. His production could affect Lazards future long term with the Packers. He has been a great contributor especially doing the dirty work as AR has said. I am less sanguine about him than some though as few players benefited as much as he did with Tae on the field. He may not be as open and may get more double coverage.

The Goon does a lot more than just the dirty work. Besides Cobb, Lazard has the most chemistry with ARod. We all know ARod doesn't trust inexperience. He loves going to guys who he knows aligns with what they're supposed to do. I've always seen Lazard as an underrated WR who does everything well. He's worth the extension now for a high-end WR2 price because this season, he's going to blow up with some stats because there's really no one else right away that ARod will trust to force the ball to.

Calling it now. Lazard will be a Pro Bowler if he stays healthy throughout the year. He will have great stats early in the season until the Rookies catch on to building chemistry in crunch time with ARod. He will be a Redzone machine.

At the very least, it will be interesting how productive Lazard is with the defense focusing more on him due to the absence of Adams. He's got size, strength and decent speed and it would be great to see him emerge.

After being a practice squad FA signing, Lazard was in a perfect position to come in hungry and prove himself as the top returning veteran receiver. Instead he skips mini camp and stays home. I’ve been a Lazard fan since seeing him at training camp back in 2019, but to me it says a lot that he wasn’t there. I say wait and see how the receiver room shakes out over the first 8-10 games.

Maybe he's just trying to not get hurt in a contract year. Maybe his agent was trying to negotiate a long-term deal. Lazard has shown great commitment to his development and a strong work ethic. He'll have plenty of time to "prove" himself in training camp.

I have always been a big fan of Alazrd but was really disappointed that he didn't show "great commitment" last year by not getting vaxed.
I don't want to start a debate about vaccinations, but a totally committed player would have followed the advice of any run of the mill doctor, not a guy that sells pillows, about taking the best care of himself.
Not vaxing and going to a large indoor halloween party shows me a lack of commitment in season. I don't care what they do off season, but in season you have to commit and he didn't IMO.
I hope he and the rest of the wr room play great this year and 2023 provides them all with new opportunities. Wish him the best. GPG!

No other team offered a 2nd round pick for Lazard, why should we give him a big contract. Let’s see what he can do without Adams.

If he is concerned about an injury, maybe he should try a different occupation.

They drafted three, but if they're lucky, 2 will pan out. Cobb and Watkins probably gone after 2022. AmRod looked over his head. There's a lot of room on the 2023 roster and beyond for Lazard, but he's got a narrow line to toe: needs to be good enough to stay but not so good that he prices himself out of town. Packers will still be drafting WR in 2023.

I have nothing against Lazard, but he is what he is and that's #3 at best when at his very best. They have Lazard for this season and if another season ends without an SB appearance, less a victory, it should be an out with the old and failed. A failure again isn't on Lazard, but it's the perfect time to let go of many of the often failed teams of the most recent seasons. We should hope that many of the new can actually play and show the ability to move some out, if not, the team will have nothing, not even Rodgers.

I have to request an explanation, Taryn. How does our offense continually rank among the better offenses when we don't have a legitimate #2, a "one-trick pony" at #3, no real receiving threat at TE, etc.??

Is it luck? Is it the GloriousGreatness of Rodgers and Adams? Is it that we just play against more weak defenses than other teams?

Also, I cannot agree with the idea that just because you come close but fall short you should then start over with a bunch of new pieces. I think you're better off by adding and improving rather than just "letting people go" because we've failed to win the Super Bowl.

I don’t have a real clear idea of what constitutes a #1, #2, #3, or #4 WR. The #1 WR is probably the easiest. The guy who is trusted, gets open and catches the most passes on a team. He is now gone. Theoretically, the next guy on the list moves up etc. Yet many people have a different criteria. My guess is that it involves comparing that WR to receivers on other teams. It also involves comparing their skills to other WR’s. And then there is the scheme related comparison. Whom best fits the scheme and called play can be the #1 receiver and that could be a TE or RB. Lastly, the #1 receiver could be the guy that the opponent most fears and plans for. So how does that impact #2-4 receiver? Does he then become the #1 or #2 when he gets the most opportunity? All of that gives me a headache.

They definitely want to wait a bit and see how it plays out. Adams drew all the attention and Lazard was probably schemed as the third option. What I want to see is how he performs if his scheme priority goes up and higher caliber CB’s are in coverage. It is not out of the question he gets priority one scheme seeing as he is most familiar with #12.

With Allen Lazard the only proven wide receiver on the Packers who is still in his prime, I would seriously consider signing him to a contract of three or four seasons for up to $12 million per year.
In other words, with Davante and MVS gone, all of our other guys are question marks. It seems wise to keep at least one of the starting trio from last season.
Lazard is not of the caliber of Davante, but then again, he hasn't had a lot of opportunity to show his potential; and while Davante may be entering the decline of his career, at least gradually, Lazard is entering his prime.
With Davante making on average $28 million over the next five years, Lazard would seem a bargain as a steady and solid wide receiver -- already the caliber of a WR2 -- who perhaps has the potential to grow.
***
It may be better for the Packers overall to have a few wide receivers catching about 50 passes per year than one who catches 100.
In the Super Bowl season of 2010, it seems we had a good balance with Jennings, Nelson, Jones, and Driver.
That may be the way to go for a title in 2022, especially with running backs and tight ends also as prominent pass catchers.
***
If Lazard is a great guy on the field and in the locker room -- which seems like a good possibility -- than I think the Packers should go out of their way to secure him for the next few seasons at a seasonal average of roughly $11 million.
It's not just the talent, but the character, that makes for key players and winning teams.

OK Swisch, let me ask you this, then: Do you see Allen Lazard as one of our Big 3 WRs for the next three years? Watson, Doubs, or Amari Rodgers? How about them?

Obviously, the organization is hoping that Amari and Watson will become weapons for us, Watson was early on Day 2, Amari late on Day 2, but these guys are blue chip caliber players. You'd hope somebody like Toure or Doubs would grow be one of our Big 3. So where does Lazard fit in after this year?

Next season, we could be lining up Watson, Amari, and Doubs and all the old dogs will be gone. It should be Cobb's last year, Watkins is just a one-year plug, and Lazard might be worth more to us in trade than he is on the field.

There's plenty of time to extend Lazard. Let's see how things shake out.

A thumbs up from me, Leatherhead, for making a good case.
It's just that outside of Lazard, there's a lot of hope with our young wide receivers but little, if any, NFL experience.
So it is that I'd lock in Lazard for three or more years, which is just about the time the likes of Amari Rodgers and Doubs would be entering their primes and their second contracts.
Even if three wide receivers other than Lazard develop into starters -- not ruling out Winfree, Taylor, and Toure -- it would still be good to have Lazard as a fourth -- especially when it seems almost inevitable that guys at this position are going to miss at least a couple of games per season.
I agree it's a tough call, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, as I've heard tell.
***
Also, I sense that Lazard may be outstanding as a teammate, as well as at least solid as a wide receiver (WR2) -- and this would be all the more reason to snatch him up rather than risk losing him.
At some point it's up to the Packers to evaluate the talent and character of all of their wide receivers for this season and into the future -- and make the tough calls.
However, especially after letting MVS go, I hope Gute isn't penny wise and pound foolish, to use another old expression (perhaps a subconscious reaction to the prospect of turning of 60 next week).
Anyway, a penny for anyone else's thoughts.

You guys got this all wrong. If Lazard was worth an Extension. Somebody else would have grabbed him first. And IMO; he'll have to play TE or the slot to further his career. The reason we drafted 3 WRs was for speed. When it's gone. You are replaceable. Lazard can't separate. He's big and catches the ball. But his YAC isn't going to put him in the All-pro category. He's valuable but not replaceable.

Not a lot of offers are made on restricted free agents, because it's not worth the bother. The team that already has the player usually matches the offer anyway. Also, Lazard is the kind of player who is more valuable to the Packers than to anyone else. Basically, he's shared #2 WR duties with Marques Valdes-Scantling for the past couple years, and he's done pretty well in that role. So I think he may be worth the kind of money that is being talked about here. I'm on the fence, though, now that they've drafted a couple of WRs who have potential to be very good.

I'm actually a little surprised someone like the Bears or even the Lions didn't chalk up an offer sheet just to force the Packers' hand with their limited cap (think Kyle Fuller a few years ago). They could've messed with the Packers' cap--as you said, the Packers were in a situation where they would almost have to match--or forced the Packers to play even more short-handed at WR ((while also signing a WR who probably makes them better).

Detroit had pick 34. Chicago had pick 39. MN had pick 46 (MN traded this away along with pick 12 and made other trades in the 2nd round, including with GB).

Lazard or pick 34? Sold.
Lazard or pick 39? Probably sold.
Lazard or pick 46? IDK. Probably sold.

Losing Lazard puts GB in a bind. Gute might have gone after another or a different free agent WR, though. [That might have given Jaire Alexander more leverage on his extension, I suppose.] I was thinking DeVante Parker, but google tells me he was traded on April 2nd, so the offer sheet might have come in later, as late as April 17.

I kind of coveted Pitre, who was drafted 37th. Watson obviously went 34th and GB would have retained picks 53 and 59. Suffice to say that there were a lot of players I liked between 34 and 46. Trey McBride for Lazard? Mafe? Booth? Brisker?

It is a little telling. A 2nd rounder is a high pick for compensation but if the player is worth signing to long term extension you think he can be a good starter for several years. Lazard is as replaceable as it gets and not a player you want to commit to. Take it year by year with him and if someone wants to pay him next year take the comp pick and run with it.

He's been mostly a part-time starter dealing with off-and-on injuries and playing behind an ace (Adams)...I tend to agree that a 2nd round pick and a big enough contract to beat the tender was a big ask for someone like that. That's the whole point of the tender, ain't it? If he wasn't someone the Packers wanted to keep, they could've gone with the cheaper "right to match" level or they didn't have to tender him at all (ESB). He gets his chance to show that he can be productive and stay healthy. We'll see how he does, but I think he's best pegged as a #3 possession type.

I've always liked Lazard, from the Detroit game on. Obviously, LaFleur does too because he starts whenever he's healthy, and we win when he starts. Under LaFleur, the Packers are an amazing 15-1 when Lazard is targeted 5 times or more, the lone loss coming in the season ender against Detroit last year.

Let's hope for the best and plan for the worst. If the other WRs look like we want them on the field more, perhaps we do the same thing with Lazard next year that we did with Adams and trade him for draft capital. Who knows? Maybe he gets hurt. Maybe he doesn't play that well. Maybe he plays awesome. Best guess is he'll play most of the games, he'll start, and if we throw it to him half a dozen times we'll probably win.

This is a no-brainer. You let him play out his deal. This isn't a guy who teams are dying to get or will make a big offer to. He is a big slow WR with average hands. By the time he is 28 or 29 he will be a red zone target or out of the league. He and Watkins are bridge players to the young guys develop.

Lazard's status on the Packers roster is a good lesson for all who think the Packers are sunk unless they invest lots of effort to sign a first round receiver. Lazard was an undrafted free agent who originally signed with Jacksonville.

Fast forward a few years and the debate centers on whether to give him a nice sized contract.

I watched several of his games his senior year in college. He was clearly the best receiver on the field in a pass-happy college program. There is so much good receiving talent available he wasn't even drafted.

If I can do something I don't like doing, Lazard might well become the top receiver on the team. After this season you might well see Cobb and Watkins gone, possibly after injuries. The team will need a veteran to take charge and Lazard could be it. In the playoff game against the 49'ers, if Rodgers had glanced down the field instead of being laser-focused on D. Adams(who was double covered), he would have seen Lazard wide open and he just might have scored a TD.

Lazard is a player worth keeping, for this year and at least a couple more years.

Watkins was the fourth player taken in 2014. To the crowd fully "Kiperized",(folks who think high draft picks are automatic success stories) he should have been the greatest receiver of all time. Now he is competing to make the Packers roster.

Lazard was undrafted and could ascend to a top spot on the Packers.

I'd love to keep Lazard long-term, but I'm not sure he's really worth the kind of money being thrown around here. I would think he's worth more to us than most teams. Of course, I was a bit surprised my MVS's interest too (and his interest in leaving).

MVS actually needs to produce to this year or he can be cut pretty easily. $6.4 million of his 2023 salary guarantees on the 3rd day of next year or if cut his dead money is $4 million. Fairly easy cut if he doesn't have a decent season or gets cut.

When they start saying again, "Ladies and Gentlemen" at online workworks, then I will return, but not until then! Florida is a common sense conservative state where most people have brains! 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤.𝐜𝐨𝐦

That's what "Florida Man" is all about, common sense.

Lazard is also our best blocking WR, in the run game. I think he balls out, this season, and then goes on the market and gets paid big time. Enjoy Lazard, while you can, because this is probably his last season, in GB. Also, we drafted 3 WRs this past draft because we lost MVS, ESB and because Lazard was an RFA. Tonyan is injured, yet, and it could be Cobb's last go round with ARod, as our QB. I am more puzzled as to why we let ESB go, to the Bears, than I am about anything involving Lazard. If you remember, in the SF play off game, when ARod threw an incompletion to a double covered Adams, Lazard was open under the coverage and would have extended the drive by moving the chains. ESB was also open, on that play, down the left sideline, and had his man beat, by at least a step. ESB was gaining ARod's trust, as Lazard did. You cannot fault our receivers for ARod throwing to a double covered Adams, there. I say Lazard would not accept a contract do over, at this point, because of how other teams have paid their WRs, this past off season. Lazard wants to get paid, and most likely will, but it won't be by the Packers. And I was going to buy a Lazard jersey. Damn!

"I am more puzzled as to why we let ESB go"

Maybe his CAREER totals of 37 rec and 1 TD in 4 years might have had something to do with it. Having more drops (5) than TDs (1) in your career usually doesn't get you re-signed.

Plenty of time to offer an extension to Lazard. he can be extended later in the season if he is having a good/great year. It's best for him and the team to let it play out. He is a willing blocker and that is a factor to consider in MLF's offense. Thanks, Since '61
