Early Front Runners to Succeed Mike McCarthy if Mark Murphy Decides to Pull the Plug

David Michalski discusses his thoughts on the current organizational power structure as well as potential replacements for Mike McCarthy should CEO Mark Murphy opt to make a change at season's end.

With the Packers season fracturing little by little with each passing week, many have begun to speculate about head coach Mike McCarthy's future with the team.  McCarthy signed a 1-year extension prior to the 2018 season to prevent him from entering the campaign as a lame duck head coach.  Although many thought that McCarthy should have suffered the same fate as former general manager Ted Thompson after last season's 7-9 disappointment, CEO Mark Murphy instead made the decision to replace Thompson, keep McCarthy, and rework the organization's power structure.

As part of the Green Bay Packers, new power structure, newly appointed general manager Brian Gutekunst and Mike McCarthy both report directly to Mark Murphy which means that Gutekunst does not have the power to hire or fire the head coach.  This kind of organizational structure breeds a culture of dissension, disjointedness, and uncertainty which could be affecting the way the Packers are playing on the field.

Gutekunst and McCarthy clearly have their own agendas, and after the results of the season thus far, it is fair to ask the question of whether they are really on the same page and who exactly is behind the curtain pulling the strings.  Maybe this new dynamic has caused a bit of a power struggle within the organization leading players like Randall Cobb to articulate the different feelings and vibes that are coming from the organization.

As Brian Gutekunst continues to carve his identity and place his fingerprints on the Packer organization by distancing himself from the Ted Thompson regime, CEO Mark Murphy is the final figure that stands in between Gutekunst ushering in a new era of Packer football with a new head coach, or, holding onto the final members of the old guard from the last thirteen seasons.

As this season continues to take wrong turn after wrong turn, every Packer Backer around the globe still holds onto that stray glimmer of hope that the team will finally have a galvanizing moment, play up to their potential, win out, and go on a historic Super Bowl run.  We as fans have to hold onto that last glimmer of hope no matter how unlikely that it may be.  That glimmer of hope is why we come back to the stadium and tune into the game week after week, it's why we love our team and don't stop believing.

However, if the Packers are not able to turn their season around and miss out on the playoffs for the second straight season, Mark Murphy will seriously have to consider a changing of the guard at head coach in order to usher in a new era of Green Bay Packer football.  If Murphy does finally decide to pull the trigger and make a change at the end of the season, this should be his short list of candidates.

Josh McDaniels:

Josh McDaniels probably is the next face of this new wave of NFL coaches as he brings both youth and a lifetime of experience to the table.  McDaniels has spent over a decade in the New England Patriots organization and has developed a great partnership with Tom Brady.  McDaniels has shown his ability to evolve his play calling to fit Brady's strengths at each and every stage of his career in order to maximize the production of his star quarterback.  Aaron Rodgers would greatly benefit from a play caller who is more open-minded and willing to adjust his play calling and tailor a diverse attack to fit his strengths while still scheming innovative ways to stretch opposing defenses.

John DeFilippo:

John DeFilippo is currently riding a wave of success following the historic run that the Eagles went on just one season ago.  DeFilippo garnered national attention as the football world watched Carson Wentz blossom before their eyes, and became a legend as he, along with Frank Reich, and Doug Pederson was able to harness a magical run from back up quarterback Nick Foles which culminated in an upset Super Bowl win against the Patriots.

The Eagles magical run gave their former offensive coordinator, Frank Reich an opportunity to become the head coach of the resurgent Indianapolis Colts and also gave DeFilippo the chance to run the Minnesota Vikings offense behind head coach Mike Zimmer.  At 40 years old, and the NFL looking for young offensive minded head coaches out of the mold of Sean McVay, DeFilippo has ascended the list of names who could get a head coaching opportunity at the end of the season.

DeFilippo's most recent experience in the west coast offense under Doug Pederson, a former Packer back up quarterback, and disciple of Andy Reid would make him an attractive option for the Packers because of his connection to the west coast offense.  His experience under Doug Pederson and his work with Carson Wentz and Nick Foles would give the Packers organization hope that he can revive this stagnant version of Mike McCarthy's west coast offense by utilizing all of their weapons and maximizing their production.

John Harbaugh:

John Harbaugh is probably the most well-balanced coach out of this list of candidates.  Harbaugh's background as a special teams coordinator allowed him to run the team's special teams unit and become more involved on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball which makes him a coach who has his fingerprints in each phase of the game plan.

Having Harbaugh run the special teams would instantly inject life into an area of the team that has perennially struggled and cost the Packers field position, and in some cases, wins.

Harbaugh is a proven winner and a leader in his locker room who always has his teams ready to perform in big games and finds new ways to challenge and motivate his players.  His impact clearly is deeper than just x's and o's as his teams always seem to play hard and maximize the production from their 53 man roster.  Hiring Harbaugh would definitely be a huge step in changing the culture of the organization and would provide a new beginning for many players in the locker room.

Bruce Arians:

Bruce Arians is an interesting name that would garner serious attention for the work that he did in Indianapolis while Chuck Pagano was ill as well as for the work that he did in Arizona going up against the likes of the legion of boom and the San Francisco 49ers, and nearly securing a Super Bowl birth for the Cardinals.  After last season, Arians thought he was ready to retire and ride off into the sunset.

However, during his first year of retirement Arians has played all the golf that he can play, is bored to tears, and desperately wants to get back into the coaching fray.  Arians has worked with and developed some of the best quarterbacks in this league and has breathed life into the careers of others like Carson Palmer.

Arians is a no-nonsense coach who holds his players accountable and projects a serious sense of bravado.  He does not shy away from a challenge nor does he shy away from speaking his mind. His attitude would definitely be a welcome change to the Packers organization and a breath of fresh air as this team needs a coach who will not accept sub par play from his players.

Other Interviews Should Include:

Pete Carmichael:

Pete Carmichael has had a tremendous track record as offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints over the last ten seasons.  Alongside the leadership of Sean Payton, Carmichael has been a part of some tremendously high powered Saints offenses and has helped accentuate Drew Brees’s strengths and develop a system in which he thrives in.

Matt LaFleur:

Young offensive coordinators are the new flavor of the month in the NFL as teams are desperately trying to find themselves the next new age offensive guru who will channel their inner Sean McVay.  LaFleur seems to fit the mold of the new wave of young and energetic offensive-minded coaches, with the work that he has been doing with Marcus Mariota and the TennesseeTitans diverse offensive attack which was on full display during their rout of the defending AFC Champion, New England Patriots.

Harbaugh is a very good coach, but offensive coordinator has always been a revolving door for the Ravens in their relatively brief history. QB and WR development are definitely not strengths of this organization. Defense and special teams are, for sure. That being said, Harbaugh may not be a good fit for the Packers. But he's certainly worth an interview.

I'm trying to figure out how John Harbaugh is even in this conversation. He is the HC of the Ravens and not their offensive coordinator, so what are people thinking? That the Ravens are going to call the Packers and ask if they want Harbaugh since we need a new coach? I suggest keeping the list to coordinators and college coaches. If your going to list HC's of current teams you might as well list Kyle Shannahan, and Sean McVay if it's a wish list.

Lots of speculation in the national sports media around Harbaugh's job security in Baltimore. The Ravens have missed the play-offs for several years in a row and Harbaugh's rabbi (GM Sharpe) is retiring this year. Harbaugh may well be available which I suspect is why he is on this list versus a Sean McVay or other NFL HC's.

You're absolutely right. I live in the area and therefore hear a lot of Ravens babble on the airwaves: lots of griping about Flacco (they're never satisfied with the QB here) and concerns about the management going forward. They've already started the transition to Lamar Jackson due to Flacco's injury and contract situation. Since the Ravens have only made the playoffs once since their Super Bowl win six years ago, the new management may certainly opt to go in another direction with the coaching staff.

I was not fully aware of the situation in Baltimore but after hearing it from you I have to wonder who would want a coach who has missed the playoffs 6 straight years , especially in a division with Cleveland and Cincinnati. Also perennial AFC creampuffs Indianapolis, N.Y, Buffalo, Miami, Jacksonville, and Tennessee on schedule every couple years. Not exactly a strong track record imho, sound like another McCarthy without the playoff appearances and division titles..

That's why I said Harbaugh may not be a good fit. He would certainly have to go out a find a stellar offensive coordinator if he were to land with the Packers, something he doesn't have the best track record of doing. He had to replace the offensive coordinator about three-quarters of the way through the 2012 season with Caldwell, who turned the Ravens offense around enough for them to march through the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Caldwell later got the Lions head coaching job. In my opinion, Harbaugh is a good coach, but he hasn't had an abundance of offensive talent to work with, and that's not his pedigree anyway.

Interesting take and timely article.
I see a lot of people talking up Brian Kelly at ND.

Yet I don't see mention the connections of MM's wife to the packer EC and B of D. It matters. I don't see anything on Murphy and his use of consultants and inability to notice what is going on around him until he is wet with drool

Aaron Rogers is better than Slacko.

Our offense is good just needs tweaking.

1. John Harbough
2. Pete Carmichael
3. Josh McDaniels

All sound good

Sad the season is over for the Packers and we have to talk about new head coaches and Draft picks.

On a side note Akeem Hicks on Chicago was a nightmare for Minnesota OL.

Nice if we could add someone like him in Free Agency or the draft.

"Our offense is good just needs tweaking"

That sounds like Ray Rhodes when he took over for one disastrous year. He suggested all the team needed was a minor maintenance check up. "A spark plug here, a spark plug there". Turned out he was wrong.

Harbaugh at the top of your list? I'm just curious as to what sound good about Harbaugh other than the name recognition? He hasn't taken his team to the Playoffs in 6 years but he sounds good to you, I bet Jeff Fisher is on your short list as well, lmao. Just what we need a washed out has been to replace another has been. Thank God you're not the Packers GM. Also McDaniels was run out of Denver midway thru his second season as HC. He also was fined by the NFL for cheating in the Video taping scandal involving a 49'ers walk through practice. He later agreed to and was hired to be the coach of the Colts on February 6, 2018 before pulling out and dissing Indianapolis and leaving it's organization in an embarrassing and precarious situation. Sorry Doug but just because we have a POTUS who has no moral character doesn't mean we need the same thing in GB coaching our team, some of us still hold morality and loyalty in high regard. McDaniels has shown time and again he is a great offensive mind but he has also shown he will cheat and put himself and his agenda before the organization. There are other good coaches out there with moral character who won't put their personal agenda above the organization. Once again thank God you're not the Packers GM.

Referring to the POTUS is not talking Politics, If I say I wish our next coach to be inventive and creative like MacGuyver am I talking Hollywood now. Or better yet, if I say this team hasn't a prayer of making the playoffs or only God could help this offense am I now talking religion? Should I be worried an atheist is going to be offended by my use of the words prayer or God? I don't talk politics or Religion and will not on this site but will never back down from speaking truth to anyone. There's an old saying that goes like this "throw a rock in a crowd of dogs and you can tell which one was hit by the yelping'. Sorry if truth upsets people, but as far as I'm concerned you may as well be peeing your own pants because no ones feeling it but you. Certainly not me. And yet you mention politicians by name while telling me to not talk politics on the site, C'mon TGR. Please stop acting like mentioning someone's moral character or lack thereof regardless of who they're is a matter of politics because it's not. And also people need to stop being so thinned skinned and sensitive like the POTUS!

I think whomever the coach is next year, needs to be able to get Rodgers turned around. Needs to be ale to get him excited to play and hold him accountable. The Packers aren't moving on from Rodgers, so whomever the coach is needs to be able to get the "elite" qb back. The good qb we have this year won't work. That said it has to be a team and everyone has to understand that. I don't buy that is simply McCarthy as to why the packers have struggled this year, but I do think things have gotten stale and maybe change may be needed. I sense Rodgers hasn't been a positive leader this year for whatever reason, and that needs to change going forward.

The problem is NOT McCarthy it is Rodgers plain and simple. He got the money and cares less now and I think he lost a lot of arm strength from that shoulder injury that we don't now about! And if the fire McCarthy that fact which has been kept secret will leak out! Just a hunch as what is going on!

I also believe something is going on. Not sure if the injury from last year or knee injury this year, or just lack of fundamentals. But something is wrong this year, badly missing to many easy throws . Even some of this completed throws were underthrown. I'm hoping its the fundamentals, those can easily be fixed. My personal opinion he also has to get over this "trust" crap with his wide receivers. If they are open throw it to them.

Give me a break - let this season play itself out. I'm tired of all the made-up drama. The Packers PLAYERS need to play better - period. If ARod hits a few more passes, we win at least 2 of the games we lost and are right in the middle of the playoff hunt.

Josh McDaniels wasn't great as a HC and the stuff he pulled on Indy isn't a good sign.
DeFillipo is an interesting name, but I'm not that impressed by the Vikings offense this year. The run game is just pathetic, but he had a good run game in Philly so its a good consideration.
I'm not interested in Harbaugh. Packers need to get back to an elite offense and let Pettine run the defense.
Arians is too old and doesn't have much of a track record of success. He'd be a worse McCarthy.
Carmichael is a good consideration.
The Titans has played as many terrible games as they have good ones. Their offense isn't good. LaFleur is a pass.

Very interesting, a bit early for this one folks. If We beat Minnesota (yes we can beat the Vikings, they have flaws) we are 2nd in the North with a schedule that lightens up at the end of the year. Not to mention, the Bears still have to play us, the Vikings at Bank of America and the Rams. Still quite a bit of football left. We are not done until mathematically eliminated. I see 4 wins, Dirty birds, Lions and Cards at home and the Jets are garbage. We CAN beat Minnesota and the Bears on the road, we are 5 plays from being 7-3 or even 8-2. Are the Packers flawed? Yes. But not finished, pump the brakes.

I want so badly to be on board with this. My problem is that the Packers have yet to play a complete game. I hope you are right.

I thought the Bears were a mirage since they had not beaten a team with a winning record until last night. Last night's game changed my mind a little. Can the Bears still crap the bed? Of course but I'm not as sure of it as I was.

The Vikings really do not impress me. Very average team in my opinion.

Back to our favorite team. An additional problem is the injuries. The D-line is much weaker than it was opening day. They will miss Daniels tremendously. I think a lot of tha lackluster performance on offense is having Cobb and Alison out for much of the year.

While I don't think McCarthy is necessarily the problem, sometimes the drumbeat for change grows too loud. Unless the Packers can run the table and go deep in the playoffs, he's likely gone.

How about Bill Cowher? I always thought he'd be great in Green Bay.

I realize pessimism is easy here, but if you haven't noticed, the NFC is jumbled mess. Carolina, they just lost to the lions and have to play the Saints twice. Do we trust anyone in the east? 9-7 could win that division. Seattle? Let the season play out. 2 years ago we were 4-6 and went to the NFCCG and that teams defense could not stop air, this years d is much better. Yet Packer fans want to mail in this season. This is a week to week league. We have Aaron Rodgers. We are not out until mathematically out.

Good stuff, Bure9620. Let's not give up as long as there's a chance. I still have hope that the Packers will have a surge on offense; perhaps if Rodgers has the humility to make the short throws and hand off to Jones more often, then the Pack can make an exciting run to the postseason. Ironically, success with the short stuff should open up the long stuff.
I'm cautiously excited about Pettine's scrappy, scrambling defense. With more than a week for rest and for integrating the newer guys, I think they can excel for the rest of the season -- especially if our offense stays on the field longer.
I'd really tell our guys, especially the newer ones, to have a lot of fun for the rest of the season playing the great game of football. Be smart, but be loose and daring, too. Savor each snap!
On a finishing note, I'd like to see Tonyan get some significant plays at tight end as our fastest and most athletic player at that position. I'd also challenge our still-great QB to lead the way down the stretch, and really elevate our promising rookie receivers with positivity.
A lot of the rest of the season depends on attitude. Whatever happens, let's go down fighting to the end. Fly around, get dirty, dive for catches, make the tackles, be stout, support your teammates, and enjoy the game. If McCarthy can somehow get that groove going, he just may be good for the keeping.

Sometimes it's good to remember that we used to play football and dive around for the fun of it all; and yet were really focused for the enjoyment of good competition, and wanting to excel and win. Recapturing that enthusiasm doesn't replace coaching and execution, but it may help to ignite a fire under a team.

I agree. If Rodgers gets out of his head and says screw it and stops playing scared and starts playing more like bree’s by getting ball out on time in rhythm and taking more chances throwing in middle of the field, throwing in tight windows when needed, hitting check downs and take the short open throw instead of running around taking sacks and getting jones the ball(also on McCarthy to do this and scheme better plays) this offense can take off and with are defense playing pretty good(offense play will only help) we could easily go on a run. But up to Rodgers to say screw it and just let fly and have fun.

I’m with big guy on this one. Get a coach that will build a balanced offense that gets Jones 20-25 touches and let’s 12 attack vertically and slants and digs to off set it. That is the saints offense it is fun to watch and the QB gets to stay aggressive all the time. I think 12 could put up huge numbers and having a 1000 yard rusher would open up every level of the passing game. MM personnel groupings are the same most of the time. Thomas is moved all over Kamara also they are always in a spot to make plays. Then the defense must always defend side to side. Which in turns gives you vertical throws. I would love Carimicheal and keep Pettine as DC this team is a contender next year. That offense would be great and year 2 of Pettine and getting some more pieces they are back on track.

I like the dynamic duo of Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine. We need a kick ass defensive oriented head coach. Rex fits the bill. Pettine stays at DC. Both on the same page, same philosophy and have the same vision. Also, Aaron Rodgers won't be able to walk all over them the way he's doing to McCarthy. Chicago is offically the offensive powerhouse for the next decade in the North. Rodgers will be gone shortly. A great defense always beats a great offense. It's time to get physical. We tried that approach since 1996. How is having a "hot offense" working out for the Packers? Most are only thinking in present day terms meaning right now. Look at Mitch Trubiski and project 2 to 3 years from now. Look at Aaron Rodgers and project 2 to 3 years from now. Do you really think it's going to be close? We have to think strategically. Our best shot to beat the Bears is to stop Trubiski and that offense. That means we need to shift from a 25 plus years offensive mindset to a defensive mindset. I can think of no duo better to lead us than Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine. Whether we want to admit it or not, the Bears are the future. They are the leaders in the North. The change has already taken place. We have to change with it. It's time to get physical. Ryan/Pettine - Make The Packers Great Again!!

..and most would argue that's a failure for having two hall of fame qb's. Don't believe me just ask. The Bears got to a super bowl with Jim McMahon and Rex Grossman. Not exactly elite qb's. Unless the Packers strike gold and hit on another young hall of fame qb ready to take over in two years (Boyle perhaps?), I don't see how the Packers will be able to compete with the powerful Bears offense. To me it makes more sense to look for a defensive oriented head coach to stop the young and powerful Chicago Bears. They are going to be a force for the next 10 years because of their qb. Ryan never won something. just a crazy foot lover who put a picture from his QB on his body.

so for guys who want the future and something new…..progressiv, you chose an old bum, who was never any good. and that was even before time has passed him.

the only guys who thought he is a winner is himself, his D genius twin ("I would be seconds without a job") and maybe the strange wig guy. makes three nice hillbillies.

These guys are just the complete opposite of "Packers People" and all what Lombardi stood for.

Im sure AR would looking forward to it.

Ryan almost got to a super bowl with Sanchez as his qb. Sanchez!! He would now have an aging Aaron Rodgers which is still a thousand times better than Sanchez. With Mike Pettine he built up a great defense and running game. Most here are constantly crying/whining about not running the ball more with Jones. So I suggest a strategy of winning with two of the greatest defensive minds in the game in Ryan and Pettine and suddenly people are afraid and want to stay with Air McCarthy or some young inexperienced guy who Aaron Rodgers will scoff at because he's younger than him and doesn't respect anything he says. The answer to me is simple. You either want to win or whine in style with some guy who makes you feel good. I want to win!! It's time to get physical!! Ryan/Pettine - Make The Packers Great Again!!

He never had a quarterback. That means a lot to a head coach just ask Mike McCarthy last year with Hundley. Rex always had a great defense and running game but never the quarterback. With Aaron Rodgers he has the final piece. His defenses in Baltimore and New York speak for themselves. Rex and Pettine can win and take Green Bay over the finish line if they are allowed to change the philosophy from offense to defense. If Rodgers doesn't like it, tough shit. It's the only way if you ask me. If they go offense oriented again they are going to get killed in the long term. Chicago Bears are the real deal. Rodgers started in 2008. It's 2018. 10 years, times up. Trubiski starts in 2018 to 2028. How do we compete? Answer? DEFENSE

Offense is broke, need a coach who can relate to Rodgers and command his attention. Defense is in good hands with Pettine. Top teams in the NFL have offenses coaches in McVay, Reid, and Payton. Nagy also offensive minded. League rules favor offense and highest scoring teams have best records so let's go hire a defensive coach. Who can then hire an offensive coordinator that Rodgers is going to defer and listen to, lol. Sounds good to me, sarcasm.

Rip your over doing it. I get the idea of building a dominating defense but Ryan is a major asshat and supreme narcissist, and would be a terrible fit for Green Bay. Give Pettine the HC job if defense is to be emphasized, but I don't think he wants to be a HC anymore and has said so. Surprised though he was not mentioned in the article as a possibility. For all we know he may have been hired by Green Bay because he was a former HC to replace McCarthy if the defense showed improvement from last year and dissention in the locker continues, which it has. Would love to see a dominating defense in Green Bay again and Pettine on the sideline instead of up in the booth and just let Rodgers call the plays like QB's used to do back in the old days.

" but Ryan is a major asshat and supreme narcissist"

Which is exactly why I want him. A great defense needs asshats with arrogant confidence. Lots of them especially their coach. We don't need nice guys like Lindy Infante or Bart Starr. Nice guys get their asses kicked in the NFL. It's a brutal game with no mercy. This isn't politics. We're talking about building up this Packers defense to where it's so effin dominating that they can win strictly on their defense like the 70's Steelers and the 85 Bears under Rex's dad Buddy Ryan. That's where I am headed. I am also saying this from a two to three years from now perspective. I don't even see Rodgers on this team in three years. That's why I want to go heavy defensive minded right now. The Bears in three years with Trubisky will be how we were in 2010 and 2011. Trubiski's not going away anytime soon but Aaron Rodgers is. We need a kick ass defensive minded coach. I like Rex. We agree to disagree. No biggie.

Green Bay could also kill two birds with one stone and hire Condoleezza Rice as Cleveland is now considering. First female head coach and first African American female head coach. Green Bay could be put on the map as a city that cares about diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. Don't know how good she would be as a head coach but sometimes the greatest leaders are the one's with little experience. I personally want the dynamic duo of Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine but Condoleezza Rice would be my second pick to be head coach of the Packers. It would be very interesting to say the least.

Her tenure as Secretary of State proved that her judgement isn’t great. She inevitably cracked under pressure. She’s an ultra risk averse person. The Packers already have someone who fits that description.

The college game and, increasingly, the NFL game is about creativity and mental aptitude. It’s life size chess. You need a grandmaster, but one with leadership skills. That’s hard to find.

This is like going into a model shop and handing the keys to someone who has never been in there. Pretty soon, the chuck key will go flying and take out someone's eye. And then there would be fingers getting cut off at the bandsaw. Experience absolutely counts, especially when some is in charge of anything remotely important. You would not even want a dog catcher who has never handled dogs. Remember: things can always get worse, a lot worse.

This is beyond just replacing MM as a head coach. There are talent gaps at almost every level on both sides of the ball, and it’s been an issue.

On offense: The guards are average on their best of days. WR is still likely a need if they let Cobb and Allison walk out the doo. They need good tackle depth. TE is still an unsolved mystery, and someone needs to help fix some of the issues with Rodgers.

On defense: STILL need edge help. The secondary probably needs 2 pieces. Maybe 3 depending on what the staff make/think of Josh Jones. The DL needs some quality depth and attention as well.

I’ve been a MM supporter and I must admit it looks like it’s time to move on. The next hire is imperative because if they hire the next Sherman, the Packers window slams shut. But here’s the million dollar question. What if MM leaves, and the FO is wrong?

Mm signs another 1 year contract. (Arron Rodgers can't win on the road.) Gute took two Cbs to set the draft. Why didn't he protect A-Rod by taking a RG. early ? (A 5th rd that was a No Show never is good.) He took Burks to replace Thomas.( Ryan wasn't hurt yet.) This team has not gone away from TTs Defensive thinking. (And Management still retained TT.) Dix/Monty gone. ( The message sent from Gute!) But yet Rodgers isn't called out for his mistakes! And how close is Crosby to the door? How would this work out for any coach? How will this work out for Gute? He liked the way this team was headed. For the sake of this franchise. Do not Replace MM yet.

I'm still not convinced MM needs to go. Everything that could go wrong, has this year, in the way of bounces, calls, etc. I did strongly disagree with his reasoning concerning the punt last week, but if it works, we're all talking about what a genius he is.

The offensive funk has as much to do with Rodgers as anyone. He needs to take what the defense gives him and continue the drive. Defenses have caught up with his tendency to escape between the tackles to extend plays, and have kept that lane filled.

Two very rookie mistakes took away huge plays last week that definitely would have swung momentum to GB. That in addition to a very suspect call reversal (I just want to punch Al Riveron in the throat!)

We will see now if MM can get aggressive with the offense, because this is really his last chance. If they don't win out, or go 5-1 the rest of the way, he is probably gone, whether it's his fault or not.

Should GB hire Rex Ryan, I will burn every piece of GB gear I own, and adopt a new team to root for. I have no clue how that clown got multiple head coaching opportunities.

"This kind of organizational structure breeds a culture of dissension, disjointedness, and uncertainty which could be affecting the way the Packers are playing on the field."

I don't understand this statement.

Gutekunst, McCarthy and Murphy have all been working together since 2007 (Gutekunst joined in '99, Murphy in '07 and McCarthy in '06).

I'm pretty sure that after working together in various capacities for nearly 12 years would mean a considerable amount of trust has grown between these men. Obviously the structure is new and Gutekunst's role has changed the most over time, but I can't imagine McCarthy and Gutekunst are bickering and running to "Daddy" aka Mark Murphy over disputes.

If anything, McCarthy got what he finally wanted -- a GM willing to be aggressive in the draft and in free agency.

12 years together can breed a considerable amount of trust or it can breed a considerable amount of distrust. If they truly trusted and liked each other, why not just move Gute into the full sized version of the GM job initially? There had to be reasons why McCarthy and Ball don't report to Gutekunst. I suspect personalities, egos and trust are part of the answer.

I would not assume that they work well together and the evidence is the current organizational structure. I think the author got this one right.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not thrilled by this list of coaching candidates:

1. Arians - Cardinals still own rights to him since he was under contract when he retired. We'd owe some sort of draft picks as compensation and you can bet the Cardinals, as bad a team as they are, would want to charge us up the ying-yang.

2. Harbaugh -- seems to wear people out around him within 3-4 years. Great coach, but would he actually last, or would he be abrasive on everyone? I also can't see him leaving Michigan. His kids go to the same elementary school as he did. He wants them to grow up like he did and leave a lasting legacy there like Bo Schembechler.

3. McDaniels -- not only did he pull a fast one and leave the Colts hanging, but it's pretty obvious that Belichick 'n Co. have him lined up to be the next head coach.

4. DeFilippo -- I'm not impressed by Minnesota's offense. They can't run the ball to save their life. They have a nice passing game, but I don't see a ton of creativity in them like I do with Matt Nagy and the Bears.

5. Carmichael -- I honestly don't know much about him, but anyone from New Orleans' Super Bowl bound club is worth a look.

6. LaFleur -- in pre-season, there was a lot of hype. But good grief are the Titans Jekyll and Hyde! One week they wax New England and the next week they get waxed. Marcus Mariota was hurt earlier in the season, but the Titans have absolutely no offensive rhythm whatsoever.

Neither am I. That's why I made up my own. I want Rex Ryan and Mike Pettine working together to make the Packers great again. Rex Ryan's defensive rankings as DC or head coach are up there with the best of them. Very consistent. We need a great defense in Green Bay and haven't had one since Fritz Schurmer. Hiring some young 32 year old no name who Rodgers is going to eat alive is not the answer. If Rodgers was not here, yes I would go that route but he's here for at least a few more years. I don't particularly like any of them except Carmichael and I am concerned how much of the NO offense is a product of Carmichael and how much of it is a product of Sean Payton? Tom Landry stayed with Dallas Cowboys until 1989. Bill Belichick is now the highest paid coach after 5 losing seasons with the Browns. I suggested let Philbin call the plays after A-Rod said he wanted a better game plan. After a WIN. That way MM could mediate. My feeling is there is a agreement between Phibin and MM. And it has everything to do with Rodgers changing plays. So Philbin is keeping his nose out.

Was Philbin the OC in 2011, the year after the Super Bowl, when the Packers offense was amazingly dynamic and almost unstoppable? Did he call the plays? Did he have more of a role? Was Rodgers more coachable at that time? What did the Packers offense do that season that it's not doing now? This may be a good topic for a CheeseheadTV analysis. Perhaps we can learn some lessons from 2011, while improving on the end result of a first-round playoff loss by solidifying the running game.

Often times it feels like Mark Murphy is living under the mantra, "Just make money, baby!" He seems more concerned about development AROUND Lambeau than the product INSIDE Lambeau.

I think a failure to make the playoffs will result in Garrett being fired. I'm curious what he'd do out from under Jerry Jones' control.

Kubiak is reportedly interested in returning to coaching but not as a HC. I hoped he'd come to Green Bay when MM was hired.

Apparently, he's not interested and his HC experience in Cleveland didn't go very well. Of course, it could just be Cleveland.

One name I was surprised to not see mentioned is Eric Bienemy, the OC of the Chiefs. Andy Reid has said that he'll be an outstanding Head Coach at some point and although not the play caller in KC. He is learning from one of the best in Andy Reid. The KC offense is one of the best and most creative in the league something sorely missing in the Packers offense at this point.

IMHO,once MM leaves there will be nothing to stop Rodgers and his crazy sandlot football tactics. He will bulldoze any new head coach to do things his way, which is trying to score 2 td's per play, instead of driving the ball down the field.Rodgers is extremely talented but not a strategist. The great football coach Hank Stram used to say"Just matriculate the ball down the field boys". Tom Brady is not as talented as Rodgers but is a better qb because he understands the game better.

"This kind of organizational structure breeds a culture of dissension, disjointedness, and uncertainty which could be affecting the way the Packers are playing on the field. "

Let's write an article based on an assumption; really 3 assumptions. That the "culture of dissension" is real; that it is real in the case of the GBP; and that it is affecting the play on the field. I think it's a bunch of bs, given that many very successful organizations in the NFL use this kind of structure, including the Steelers. It's more like reading a fan's teed off opinion of the team without worrying about things like facts.

And has everybody forgotten what Josh McDaniels did in Denver?
