Game Recap: Charmin-Soft Packers Wiped by Washington

Packers dysfunctional season-story continues in 23-21 loss in Washington.

At this point, I'm about out of words to describe my disappointment in the 2022 Green Bay Packers. They have nothing to hang their hat on. The 2021 MVP quarterback looks like a shell of his self. His coach, "phenom" Matt LaFleur appears lost in figuring out his team's offense, which, ya know, should be his specialty. And the best defense in NFL history - Paper Edition, is about as strong as tissue paper. OK, fine, Pat O'Donnell rules. But other than that, this team is lost, dysfunctional, flat, soft, weak, and to put it at its most simple, bad.

Antonio Gibson hauls in a touchdown in the Commanders' 23-21 win over the Packers.

Antonio Gibson hauls in a touchdown in the Commanders' 23-21 win over the Packers.

First Quarter

The offense came out with a new offensive line, although probably not what was practiced all week with David Bakhtiari inactive. Zach Tom got the start at left tackle, with Yosh Nijman at right tackle and Elgton Jenkins back to his left guard sport. After going to Aaron Jones on four straight plays, Allen Lazard dropped a third down pass which forced an early Pat O'Donnell punt.

The defense came out flying, forcing an immediate three-and-out on the Taylor Heinicke-led Commanders. Starting their second drive in Washington territory, the Packers went to some quick passes to move inside the Washington 10. On a middle screen inside the 5, Aaron Rodgers hit Jones for the touchdown giving Green Bay a 7-0 lead.

The defense forced another three-and-out, with Rasul Dougles nearly picking off a third down pass. But, soon-to-be-former Packer Amari Rodgers fumbled the punt, giving the Commanders the ball deep in Green Bay territory. The defense came up huge stopping Washington inside the 10 and allowing a Joey Slye field goal to make it 7-3.

The Pack's next drive was over before it started with a first-down penalty of which the offense was unable to recover. A third-and-long pass to Jones fell short, and out came O'Donnell again to end the first.

Second Quarter

The defense made its biggest impact play of the year, with De'Vondre Campell fighting for an interception, which he hauled in then promptly took to the house to give the Packers a 14-3 lead. And on the insuing possession, Rasul Douglas nearly hauled in what would have been another interception before Antonio Gibson broke off a nice run to get the Commanders near the 50. Kenny Clark made a nice stop on a screen, but then Heinicke hit Terry McLaurin for a first down at the Packers 35. A big Brian Robinson run appeared to end in a fumble, but the review held up a call that he was down. On third down, Heinicke hit Gibson for a touchdown to make it 14-10 Packers.

The Packers' offensive struggles showed up again, with Jones taking a loss on first down, then a holding penalty on second. Time to bring out Pat O'Donnell again, leaving Washington with the ball to start inside Green Bay territory.

On third-and-6, maybe the most pivotal play in the game where Rasul Douglas returned a Heinicke fumble for a touchdown. But a very questionable illegal contact penalty on Stokes negated it, giving Washington a first down. The defense would force another Slye field goal attempt which he missed to maintain the 14-10 lead.

After more ineffective offense, it was halftime. Aaron Rodgers with a putrid 47 halftime passing yards.

Third Quarter

Washington would start at their own 25, and after two nice stops, Kenny Clark held on a run play to keep it moving. Then, Curtis Samuel took a jet sweep for 15, and on the next second down, Heinicke went deep to McLaurin for a touchdown over Jaire Alexander for a 37-yard touchdown to make it 17-14 Washington.

On the Packer's next possession, the Packers went 3-and-out on a third down drop on a very inaccurate throw by Rodgers. Just exemplifying a terrible afternoon by the offense. Meanwhile, Heinicke and Washington found some footing. Moving into GB territory, the Packers brought some pressure and got the stop forcing a Slye field goal to make it 20-14 Washington.

Fourth Quarter

The offense failed to gain much after an initial first down. On 3rd-and-10, Rodgers hit Amari Rodgers for 9, bringing up a short 4th down. Run the ball you say? Of course not - Rodgers threw incomplete to Doubes who dropped the pass, but it looked like Sammy Watkins missed a blocking assignment that threw off the play.

Kingsley Enagabare would get to Heinicke, but on the next play he'd hit Curtis Samuel for 26 yards, followed by an Eric Stokes 15-yard penalty. After Washington killed more time, Sly booted another field goal to make it a two-possession game at 23-14 approaching 6 minutes to play.

The next Packers possession was more of the same, however Watkins was able to draw a hands-to-the-face penalty to provide a first down. Of note, to this point in the game, the Packers do not have a third down conversion. Amari Rodgers caught an out route, made a nice move and got the first down with 5 minutes to play. Rodgers went deep to Amari Rodgers again on the next play, but it was just out of his reach.

To give you an idea as to how injured the Packers receivers are, Rodgers' next attempt went to Samari Toure for his first career catch to bring up a 3rd-and-6. Going incomplete to Dillon, there was a flag on Washington for a hands-to-the-face penalty. The Packers continued to dink-and-dunk while the clock continued to run, and then drew a pass interference penalty on Washington on a deep pass to Robert Tonyan. With 3:33 remaining, Rodgers rolled left and went deep to Aaron Jones for a much-needed Packers touchdown to keep the game in reach at 23-21 Commanders.

With over 3 minutes left, the Packers needed a stop. Holding all their timeouts, they stopped Brian Robinson for a short gain on first down. Heinicke, facing pressure, hit McLaurin on a stumbling Jaire Alexander for a first down. Alexander fouled up on the tackle, though, not forcing McLaurin out of bounds.

The Packers stopped the next two plays for losses, using their final timeouts, with just over 2 minutes to go bringing up 3rd-and-9 for Washington. Rocked as he threw it, Heinicke hit McLaurin on a comeback to convert. Jaire Alexander in coverage, which is just a brutal fail by 23.

Running the clock down, the Commanders were forced to punt back to Green Bay with only :29 seconds left which was fair caught by Amari Rodgers with :23 left. Frantic, Rodgers went deep to Watkins near the 50 with only 5 ticks left, giving Rodgers and his Hail Mary arm one last shot. They hit Tonyan over the middle, and fafter a litany of laterals and a meaningless flag, the game was over.

Offensive MVP

This offense is totally broken, and it's hard to see how it can be remotely fixed. But with a late announcement of David Bakhtiari being out, the offensive line of Zach Tom, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, Jr. and Yosh Nijman seemed to hold up well. Pressure wasn't Rodgers' issue - it was Rodgers and his receivers today. The offensive line certainly held its own.

Defensive MVP

While it'd be easy to go wit De'Vondre Campbell on his awesome pick-six, Rasul Douglas was all over the field on defense and should have had a touchdown of his own. He was active, handsy, and made huge plays to keep the team in it.

What Went Right

Well, in the first half, the defense. But after that? Yet again, nothing much. This is just not a good football team anywhere. They can't get stops, they can't move the ball, they can't score points. Hard to image anything other than more of the same going forward.

What Went Wrong

Aaron Rodgers is a broken quarterback. While he's down his top receivers, he's inaccurate and his decision making is questionable. Not sure if he's frustrated or injured, but he's not himself and a huge issue with the offense. Oh, and a road trip Halloween weekend in Buffalo waits in the wings.

I actually agree with you.

The Packers have ignored the need to send Aaron Rodgers' self-centered ass a-packin' since the end of the MM era.

Time to get on it and tell Rodgers to kick rocks.

Always amazed me that Rodgers wanted back after he knew no Adams and not much cap and a draft pick or two. Just as much as why we thought that made sense. A real Head Coach might have made a fist of it, ours just showed he was just a coat tail hanger all along.

Aaron Rodgers isn't concerned with the Packers, he's told us for almost a decade what his priorities are. His decision to return was all about his career goal to play for a single team into his 40's.

That's not necessarily a bad thing to want to achieve, it's just that it isn't about the team.

Exactly right 13. And they converted 3rd and longs we failed on 3rd or 4th and one or twos. Truly a frustrating team. Underperforming and (worse) no fun to watch.

But LaFleur did say after last week he wanted his players to have fun on the season. They get paid win or lose so I suppose they can find some fun in this fiasco.

Today was not squarely on Rodgers. Some of those balls could've been placed a little better but having his receivers go to the ground to catch the ball is something he's done for years, especially on third downs as it minimizes the likelihood of defenders teeing off on them or dropping the ball altogether. Today was a story of two receivers. Allen Lazard and Romeo Doubs. Lazard dropped a ball early but made up for it with a few big time catches. Romeo Doubs dropped 4 passes and 2 were on third/fourth down. It's amazing how this team just cannot put it together.

Hogwash. Rodgers was inaccurate most of today. A few decent throws and the game looks very different. Ironically I don’t blame Rodgers really. The design of the O is so minimalist and unimaginative that he’s almost always throwing into tiny holes to receivers with defenders in their grill. No chance for them or he to get in rhythm and they weren’t. However, let’s not whitewash Rodgers accuracy. What is telling us that at least at middle distance, if a play breaks down and a receiver improvises, he can hit them just fine. The play calling is suffocating them all.

Green Bay very well could be 3-9 going into Chicago in December.

This is what happens when you have an old and descending team with an old 50m QB and a 25m LT whose knee doesn't work anymore. I'll always love the Packers. But having a brain as a fan of a losing team is like having a person you love who has a problem and just won't listen to reason. The best thing you can do at times is call the spade what it is. Then, either cut them off or tell them repeatedly they have a problem and hold them accountable.

The Packers have a problem. They should have traded 12 in the offseason and now they're going to be bad for a very long time. They're getting what they deserve. In hope they recover as quickly as possible, I hope they continue to lose so badly that 12 will retire in the offseason. That's the only way out I see for the next 3-5 years.

And if that doesn't happen? This team will suck for years and everyone in the building will be fired before the healing can begin in 2025 or 2026.

Bench Rodgers and put the ball in his court. Maybe some crazy team that is desperate for a QB to get to the playoffs will bite on a trade. Start the housecleaning. Trade Love, Savage, Lowry, Hanson, Newman, Bahk, Rodgers(the fumbler), Cobb when he's healthy, Dillon, Deguara, and Stokes and go 3-14 and get a top pick. Make that 4-13....we own the Bears.

Thanks to absolutely gorgeous weather, I only saw the end of the 2nd Q, a Wash drive (TD) and a GB drive (punt) in the 3rd Q, and part of the GB TD drive in the 4th Q. We absolutely suck. I'm SO glad I no longer live and breathe Packers green. No angst, no pissed-off moods, not really caring anymore. This, my friends, is the way to follow this team. Learned it back in the 70s and really thought I wouldn't need this strategy again. *SIGH*

I'm actually glad that, if this shit had to happen, it happens with AR under center. If they had traded AR and were still this bad (due primarily, IMO to a combination of very poor coaching and poor QB play), everyone would be saying "See! We told you Rodgers was the key to this team!" and even worse, MLF would be getting a free pass because, well, "there are always growing pains with a new QB." (which is of course true). So, if GB has to suck, let it be with AR - show MLF and his coaches the door, show AR the door, too, eat the obscenely stupid salary, amass some decent draft picks (and probably a new QB-of-the-future) and try again by the end of the decade.

Get the scraps you can before the deadline, clean house in the offseason, suffer through the cap issues for the next couple years, pray they do enough to have a core of players to build around for the next era. This team is done.

Yes, the OLine looked marginally better. As per not putting Nijman at LT where is he has been successful? Just another confusing MLF decision and Rich B sticking with Amari Rodgers at punt returner? No other sane coach in this league would keep Amari in there! We could have won with those 3 points without his usual fumbling routine...

At some point, blame has to be laid where it belongs.

Poor talent = GM

Poor game plan and management = coaching staff.

Oh, and if Rodgers retires and Bakh can't play, that'll be approx $130 million toward a 2023 salary cap projected to be $225 million for for two guys who aren't on the field.

I get Rodgers isn’t what he was but this is a bad team and not talented like they look. Best corner got beat all day today. Your best receivers are Alan Lazard and Sammy Watkins, and your best offensive lineman doesn’t even play is a losing formula. Plus your coaches can’t adjust to anything hence why this is the worst second half team in the league. I get everyone going off on Rodgers but outside of him this is bad team and coaching staff. If they change to Love at they will lose by double digits. The team lacks talent at all levels as well as a adequate coaching staff. Just rebuild and let Arron jones and Rodgers do something outside Green Bay is my opinion.

You’re hanging onto false hopes. 7 games and Rodgers has been barely better than Baker Mayfield. Today his O line was very good. His throws were about as accurate as Stevie Wonder and Hellen Keller playing lawn darts.
I thought P Manning’s declining game was next day. Rodgers is like, hold my beer (scotch). I’m not a Rodgers hater either. But holy crap, the picks and players (Fant) we could’ve had. That what if rebuild versus the actual rebuild we’re looking at is like getting a tax refund or facing a huge IRS audit

I kept trying to argue trading AR all offseason for Denvers draft choices and young talent with most here hating on me. Still cannot believe so many could not see that trade would have dramatically changed the Packers. The very fact Murphy, Gutey & Lefleur refused to pull the trigger the Executive committee should terminate them all. Now stuck with an old QB who is disgruntled, not highly motivated, who is inaccurate, and who cannot run to pick up 1st downs. Just hope he retires after this season. The other f...-up Lefleur will do to exacerbate the failings of his coaching is not playing Love to give him experience. Yes, let's not see what we have in him and give him much needed experience going into next year. Exactly what the Packers need next year is no Rodgers and Love with minimal playing experience. I want to see Lefleur at some point grow some gonads and sit Rodgers and play Love. Just don't see it happening except in mop up.

No offense at all to CHTV, but I don't think fans want a recap right after a game we just watched, especially if it's reliving a lot of misery inflicted on us by the Packers.
We want some personal observations off the cuff, and an opportunity to make our own, so as to vent our immediate reactions and blow off some steam.

Okay, so we have an OLD $50 million-a-year QB, a $25 million-a-year LT who's broken down, and a $20 Million plus a year CB who can't stop shit which is about $100 Million of our cap next season.

They have a coach and QB who are in obvious disagreement about the offense. Oh, let's not forget the JOKE of a DC they hired to replace Pettine.

This team is completely lost and the front office (blame it on whomever you want) has completely fucked this team for the foreseeable future.

Shiiiiiiiit... The '70s and '80s just may look like powerhouses compared to this team in 2023 and 24. What's a damn shame is it DIDN'T need to be like this!

For the very first time in as long as I remember I won't watch the Packers on Sunday Night Football next week. I'll record it fast forward through all the bad parts which should be about 59 minutes of the 60-minute contest.

This team is COOKED. It's time to see what we have in Jordon Love. The problem with that is the WR group is so pathetic it's unfair to even try and judge him.

I'd say the second touchdown pass to Jones near the end of the game was both an excellent throw and an excellent catch.
Rodgers can still throw a great pass at times, the question is how accurate is he overall?
Even more so, how effective is Rodgers at making the offense productive?

Coming to that above post he has been waiting for every chance to blame rodgers if i am not wrong he did that against vikings last yr when rodgers scored a TD on a bomb to MVS and got us leading for our defense to fold up and lost it. Even that game he blamed Rodgers.

I get the disappointment, but it would be a disservice to deny yourself watching Josh Allen. That guy is hard not to cheer for even when he is putting the boots to our Team.

I get it friend, and Josh Allen is really something else, the MVP IMO so far this year. BUT, I have Sunday Ticket on Direct TV and can watch OR record his games anytime. Watching next week will be too painful and unessassary torture to myself!!

Out coached and outplayed again!

Defense can't get off the field on the last drive?

Brutal

Having said that it was a terrible call on the illegal contact negating the scoop and score. Game changer.

Will get crushed by Buffalo next week.

Keeping Amari Rodgers returning punts is making Rich B look like the ever stubborn Joe Barry who I have zero respect in. (I still won't bring him down to Mo Drayton levels). I expected better decision making from Rich B!

The defense was good. They held their own as long as they could, but it’s hard to sustain success when you don’t have an offense. They were obviously tired throughout the second half. Also, Amari needs to go. The offense was crap, but his muff that lead to a FG likely cost us the game. It doesn’t matter though, I’m actually happy they lost so that the upper management get it through their thick heads that this team is done and they need to go.

Usually i agree on multiple of your other posts. The defense has been good first half but after that the very first drive the commanders started tearing down this defense in the second half. In terms of talent all the teams the defense played were either a no name qb or teams shorthanded on their wr's . Even then the teams had success running against this defense and later on opened up the passing game.

Agreed the offense is very poor but the defense is just only slightly better so far this year.

Upper MGT has been the problem for the past 10 years.. GUTE should have been fired years ago... If you didn't see this coming you must have blinders on... This team is a compilation of poor drafting and poor free agent acquisitions. Its all starts at the top and IMO they all need to go. Should have hired Dan Quinn when he was available. This team is in serious trouble... I didn't believe what any of the Packer beat writers were writing about during the summer. As a died hard Packer fan from the late 60's these players all look disgusted. Something is not right in that locker room. Trading deadline is 11/1 Packers just became sellers and not buyers. This season is over...

The coaching sux a lot.

No discipline.

TIRED???

Get these millionaires in SHAPE!!!!!

Training camp? Thats a fukkin joke. MLF let AR take the entire off-season off and then call his own shots in training camp and every other veteran did the same.

No Discipline!@!! Not in shape. Just unacceptable.

TIRED my ass, suck it up buttercup. Playing 40 minutes a game should be a very reasonable goal for both sides of the team. No excuses.

Get them out on the track and run them until their tongues are dragging the ground.

The hype that was sold to GB fans is disgraceful. This is a bad, soft and dysfunctional organization from top to bottom - with the exception of just a few of the players. The "product" that the GB "corporation" is selling to its fans is an abysmal value proposition. Poor strategy from its directors, ludicrous tactics from its coaches and bad execution from most of its players. Have I missed a level?

I can't wait to hear from LaFloor with his "excuses du jour" from this lost? You have to believe he must be running out of them? And OMG, we will still have to endure another 11 games! Accordingly, LaFloor might have to hire Jerry Seinfeld to help him with his upcoming media sessions? At least then, we can have some positive entertainment versus watching this utter lack of football acumen the Packers are providing...

Packers just keep beating themselves with penalties and dropped passes. The offense has become unwatchable. Rodger is not throwing well but he still made his best throw of the game while on the run on the TD pass to Jones in the 4th quarter. Maybe we should move Rodgers to make throws more often. Given Rodgers overall performance so far this season we're basically watching how the Packers look without Rodgers. It's not very pretty or positive.

The defense continues to drop sure picks and takes penalties on what should be game changing plays. We're losing to QBs who are back from the league's dustbin. It doesn't look good right now and I don't see it getting any better with our coaching staff and our upcoming schedule. Thanks, Since '61

Disjointed, fragmented, inconsistent; a testimony to poor practicing and accountability. I'm the type of guy who would be working the trade scenarios for a wide receiver with a set of hands. 3 to 4, 3rd down conversions negated with dropped balls. If it hits their hands, catch it. Nobody seems to lay out for the ball. On 4th and one, move the WRs in front of Rodgers and move the pocket, bing to the TE. No more excuses for Amari. He made a nice spin for the 1st down, but stone-fingered a clean look that should have gone TD.

I don't think you finished the prediction "without Rodgers and with horrible coaching." There is a lot more talent on this team that is being lost in just horrible offensive and defensive game plans. Barry never should have been hired and clearly MLF/Stenavich are out of their depth. I saw an offense that wasn't too simplified, but clearly designed by a simpleton.

This team reminds me of the 2018 team when McCarthy got fired after the Arizona team but worse. At least that team had no talent . This team has talent but this is the most brutal coaching staff I have ever seen from the defense to the offense . Gutless , no ability to adjust , and overall just a management and coaching staff that hold no one include themselves to any sort of responsibility.

This team needs to be sellers at this point and change the culture this season in the sense of playoffs is cooked . Why not shop some of the veterans . Unfortunately, unless their is something I don't understand we are left in a big financial hole with Rodgers contract either way .

Gutey was director of east coast scouting and by that time the GM was in the “Weekends at Bernie’s” phase with Eliot and Gutey jockeying for position to be the successor. Next week we will see the Tight End he should have selected instead of Jace.

They brought Jace in. Twice! - He got slower. Drug violation. And Rodger's liked Tonyan more. I now think Tonyan's gotten slower. TT would never have kept guys who got injured. He very seldom drafted them. If a trade is made for WR. I doubt Lazard or Tonyan will be resigned. Just a hunch.

Neither guy deserves a big contract. Once again, Gutey is behind in the count. No TE drafted in a very strong 2022 draft. Stokes has the speed, but not the skillset of Campbell, the other CB drafted out of Georgia.

-I'm starting to think that Lafleur is just a better looking McCarthy who had the benefit of working under McVay and Shanahan.

-Please give Amari Rodgers more opportunities in the passing game. I'm not saying it's a cure-all but he's done some nice things in his limited snaps. He'd be so much better on those WR screens than Doubs.

MLF never had control of this team. 12 made sure of that from day 1. See his interview with Kenny Mayne like a month after Lafleur was hired where he shit all over Lafleur's offense before they even practiced together. Lafleur may or may not be a good coach, but he has been stuck between a rock and a hard place his entire tenure with this team. He had two choices: coach this team as he sees fit (which will likely anger 12) or kneel and let 12 be in charge (to the detriment of the team). I dont envy him or any of 12's teammates.

MLF should have fired Barry in the off season and brought in a more aggressive DC. He also should have hired a true OC and not promoted Steno who seems to run high school plays.
