Game Recap: Packers Beat Bears 45-30

Sarah Kelliher recaps the Packers’ week fourteen win against the Bears.

During a game where NFL ownership is on the line, Aaron Rodgers surely knows how to deliver. In a wild Sunday Night Football matchup, the Green Bay Packers (10-3, 3-1 NFC North) topped their division rival, the Chicago Bears (4-9, 2-2 NFC North), 45-30 at Lambeau Field.

The Packers won the toss and deferred, so the Bears were the first to take the field Sunday night. On their opening drive, they found a bit of early momentum after rookie quarterback Justin Fields saw a gap and rushed for 8 yards and the first down on 3rd and 5, and then connected with team-leading wide receiver Darnell Mooney for a 19-yard pickup on the next play for another first down. However, the hype was quickly killed by Green Bay’s defense after safety Henry Black produced a key pass break up on 3rd and 7 to force Chicago to punt.

On their opening drive, the Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were on and off the field even quicker than the Bears. On 2nd and 5, Rodgers was sacked by linebacker Robert Quinn for loss of 11 yards and the green and yellow couldn’t make up the yards on the next play and were forced to punt.

I could just stop writing at this point because Quinn decided to mock the belt right in front of Rodgers’ face and we all know that meant the Packers were walking away with an automatic win but, because I love you, I will continue.

After Green Bay’s good ole special teams unit gave up a 34-yard punt return, Chicago only had 44 yards to go to find the endzone and they took advantage. On 3rd and 5, Fields connected with wide receiver Allen Robinson for 8 yards to keep the chains moving. Then, on 2nd and 9, running back David Montgomery rushed for 20 yards to quickly propel the Bears into the red zone. After that, on 2nd and goal, defensive end Kingsley Keke was flagged for an illegal hands to the face penalty which gifted Chicago an automatic first down and brought them within the five. But, on 2nd and goal again, the Bears were flagged for a false start and had to move back to the 8-yard line. From there, they couldn’t recover after a major dropped pass on third down and were forced to settle for a 23-yard field goal. Their attempt was good, and Chicago took a 3-0 lead.

With the ball now back in Green Bay’s court, the special teams unit continued to give Packers’ fans worldwide a massive headache. On the kickoff, the Bears’ kick was sailing out of bounds, but Packers kick returner Malik Taylor decided to try and catch it anyways and dropped it out of bounce, costing Green Bay 35 yards.

Backed up in their own territory, running back Aaron Jones got things rolling for the Packers after rushing for 15 yards and the first down on 1st and 10. Then, on 2nd and 9, Rodgers was sacked for the second time of the evening which resulted in a 9-yard loss for Green Bay. However, this time, the Packers bounced back quickly on 3rd and 19 after Rodgers lofted one deep down field and found wide receiver Allen Lazard for a 32-yard pickup to move the chains. But the hype of the big play didn’t last long after the Packers couldn’t find something on their next three plays and were, once again, forced to punt.

On their next drive, the Bears took full advantage of the Packers’ slow start. On 2nd and 2, Montgomery rushed for 3 yards and a first down. Then, on 2nd and 7, running back Damien Williams got involved and moved the chains with an 8-yard rush. After that, Green Bay gifted Chicago 15 free yards after cornerback Rasul Douglas was flagged for a questionable pass interference call. And, just went things seemed like they couldn’t get worse for the Packers, they did. Just two plays later on 2nd and 4, Fields found wide receiver Jakeem Grant on a short pass play, and he zipped past all of the Packers’ defense and took off for a 46-yard touchdown. Chicago’s extra point attempt was good, and they extended their lead over Green Bay to 10-0 just minutes into the second quarter.

When the Packers needed to make a big play, they put their trust in star wide receiver Davante Adams and he came through. Despite dealing with a hamstring injury, on 3rd and 3, Adams came up huge with a 12-yard catch to move the chains for a first down. From there, tight end Josiah Deguara entered the chat for a big play and picked up 25 yards and a first down. After the Packers took their first timeout of the half, Jones erupted out of the backfield for 11 yards on 1st and 10 to keep things rolling. Then, Rodgers showed off his stuff with a masterful fake handoff that tricked everyone in Lambeau and watching at home and connected with veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis for 12 yards and a first down. Then, after failing to find the end zone on three straight attempts, the Packers went for it on 4th and 2 and Rodgers connected with Lazard for a touchdown to cut the Bears’ lead to 10-7.

Green Bay wouldn’t have to trail for much longer either. On 3rd and 3 on Chicago’s next drive, Douglas jumped the route and picked off Fields and took it back 55 yards to the house to put the Packers on top 14-10.

From that moment on, things took an absolutely crazy turn.

Just as fast as Green Bay took the lead, Chicago would retake it after Fields connected with wide receiver Damiere Byrd just three plays later on 3rd and 4 for a 54-yard touchdown play to go back up 17-14.

Desperate to try and respond, the Packers continued to put the pressure on the Bears with just over three minutes remaining in the half. On 2nd and 10, Rodgers connected with Lewis for a 20-yard gain and a first down to move the chains for the Packers. However, offensive tackle Billy Turner went down with a knee injury and was quickly ruled out for the game. To make matters worse, to open the two-minute drill, Adams was flagged for offensive pass interference on third down and Green Bay was forced to punt.

Not only did the Packers fail to get any points on the drive, but the absolute dumpster fire that was Green Bay’s special teams unit on Sunday night continued to go up in flames. On the punt return, even though it appeared Grant was pinned deep in Chicago territory, he somehow escaped and took off for 97 yards and a touchdown to extend the Bears’ lead to 24-14. According to the NBC broadcast, it was the first punt return for a touchdown this season in the NFL.

Despite the gut punch and disgusting performance from special teams, the Packers weren’t going down without a fight in the first half of this rivalry matchup. Less than a minute into their next offensive drive, Rodgers looked deep down the left side of the field and connected with Adams for 38 yards and a touchdown to cut the Bears’ lead to 24-21 with seconds remaining in the first half.

Just before the half, Green Bay’s special teams gave up another 40+ yard return, but luckily the defense was able to hold Chicago to only a field goal. The Bears’ 44-yard attempt as time expired was good, and they extended their lead over the Packers to 27-21 after two quarters of this rollercoaster.

Despite the noise, Green Bay continued to battle and opened up the second half with a nearly perfect touchdown drive to retake the lead. To open the half, running back AJ Dillon rushed for 11 yards and a first down to move the chains. Then, Rodgers connected with Adams for 12 and 16 yards, respectively, to pick up back-to-back first downs. From there, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling got involved and picked up 8 yards on 2nd and 2 to move the chains for the Packers and push them into the red zone. After that, Dillon continued to run strong and picked up 11 more yards before passing it off to Jones who finished the drive by rushing 3 yards for a touchdown. Crosby’s extra point attempt was good, and the Packers took a 28-27 lead.

After that, things continued to go pretty much perfectly for the Packers in the second half. On 2nd and 5 for the Bears, linebacker Preston Smith got to Fields and forced a fumble and linebacker Rashan Gary was there to recover it at Chicago’s 23-yard line. On the very next play, Rodgers displayed more trickery and dropped one in the bucket over a defender for Jones for a 23-yard touchdown to extend Green Bay’s lead to 35-27.

The fun continued for the 78,000+ fans at Lambeau and at home too after the Packers’ d-train forced a three and out on the Bears’ next possession.

On the Packers’ next offensive drive, they continued to stay in rhythm with a little help along the way. On 1st and 10, Rodgers connected with Adams right out of the gate for 16 yards and a first down. From there, Lazard had a little fun off the jet sweep and picked up 14 yards and drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Bears to gain an extra 8 yards while moving the chains for the Packers. However, it wasn’t enough in the end after Green Bay came up just about 2 yards short of the end zone on third down and the Packers looked to Crosby for a 20-yard field goal to extend their lead. His attempt was good and Green Bay extended their lead to 38-27.

With just minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Packers continued to dominate on both sides of the ball and the defense forced another Bears three and out. However, after that, their hot streak ran out and they went three and out themselves after Rodgers was sacked on first down and they could not recover.

To open the fourth quarter, Green Bay’s special teams continued to put on a truly laughable performance with a 22-yard punt. Luckily, the Packers’ defense held the Bears to another three and out and the ball was safely back in Aaron Rodgers’ hands within minutes. Green Bay had a bit of a scare on the punt return though (thanks again, special teams!) after Amari Rodgers muffed the punt and Chicago returned it for a touchdown. However, they were bailed out and the Bears had to redo the play after one of their players was ruled out of bounds.

The Packers made sure the Bears regretted their mistake, too. On their “dagger” drive, Green Bay ascended 71 yards down the field and methodically shaved 8:38 off the clock to just about seal the deal in this one. On 3rd and 2, Rodgers connected with Adams for 8 yards and a first down to move the chains. After that, Dillon rushed for 6 yards on 2nd and 4 to keep the drive alive. Lazard continued to get involved and, on 2nd and 8, picked up 11 for the Packers. After that, Rodgers connected with Adams once more for a 4-yard pickup to put Green Bay in the red zone. From there, Adams lined up one-on-one with his man on 1st and 10 and displayed his signature release to make a 3-yard touchdown catch to extend the Packers’ lead. Crosby’s extra point attempt was good, and the Packers went up 45-27.

The Bears were not going down without a fight in this rivalry game, though. With just over four minutes remaining, Fields started to heat up. On 1st and 10, he scrambled for 11 yards and the first down. Then, on the next play, he connected with Montgomery for a short pass over the middle for a 13-yard play to move the chains. After that, on 3rd and 10, Fields scrambled again and picked up 17 yards to keep the drive alive for Chicago. However, his strong play wasn’t enough, and the Bears decided to settle for a field goal with just over a minute remaining. Their 43-yard attempt was good, and they cut the Packers’ lead to our final score of 45-30.

To keep the game alive, Chicago attempted an onside kick and even recovered it after MVS bobbled the catch. However, cornerback Chandon Sullivan officially secured the win for Green Bay after he intercepted Fields with 53 seconds remaining in this entertaining Sunday Night Football matchup.

What we learned: The Packers still own the Bears

There is truly nothing like a Packers win over the Bears. Despite the slow start, once Green Bay got into their groove in the second half, this was such a fun game to watch (besides special teams, of course).

According to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, with Rodgers’ second touchdown pass to Davante Adams on Sunday, he passed Brett Favre for most touchdown passes ever against the Bears, with 61 total.

I guess his statements back in week six weren’t too far off.

What went right: Second half

After a shaky first half all around for the Packers, things really took a turn for the best in the second half. From veteran play from both Adams and Rodgers, to the tenacious new playmakers on Green Bay’s defense like Douglas, Stokes and Campbell, the Packers looked like one of the league’s best in the second half (besides special teams, of course).

Although it took a little time for that bye week rust to wear off, I’m glad the Packers shook it off when they did.

What went wrong: Special teams

I don’t even want to talk about special teams. However, if I did, I would say that Drayton’s job is most definitely on the line because what unraveled Sunday night is beyond unacceptable.

It was a complete failure all around and against pretty much any other team that would’ve cost Green Bay the game. Seriously, I don’t even know what the answer is to fixing special teams, but they are just performing so poor all the time and it’s utterly painful to watch.

Offensive MVPs: Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams

Sunday was just a clinical night for 12 and 17. They continuously prove why they are the best duo in the game, and everyone got to see that in primetime this week.

According to ESPN stats, Rodgers finished the evening 29/37 and threw for 341 yards and 4 touchdowns while Adams tallied a team-high 10 receptions for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns.

These two are special.

Defensive MVP: Rasul Douglas

I am once again asking how Rasul Douglas was on the Cardinals PRACTICE SQUAD. He continues to get better every week for the Packers and it’s truly a joy to watch. What a steal for Gutey.

Douglas finished the day with 2 total tackles, 2 of which were solo, 2 pass deflections, 1 interception and a touchdown (ESPN stats).

Up next, the Green Bay Packers hit the road for a matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. With a win, despite what happens around the league, the Packers can clinch the NFC North. Kickoff is set for Sunday, December 19 at 4:25 p.m. EST from M&T Bank Stadium.

I believe if they can find someone they like to coach special teams, they should hire him right now. I can't see how it can get any worse. I don't like to hire a coach during the season but if that person is available......get him now! Yes, ST is that bad.

As an avid Madden player who has yet to give up a special Teams TD in Madden this year, for only 60k a year I will be the new Special Teams Coordinator. This will save the team money, and from many different foolish mistakes.

The key to victory for the Packers seemed to be two wonderful displays of small ball by the offense -- with a creative array of play calling -- on the opening drive of the second half for a touchdown to take the lead, and on the final drive of the game for a touchdown to seal the deal.
Other than that, just a good, old-fashioned shootout between the Packers and the Bears, just like Lombardi and Halas would have planned it ;-).

I think Halas and Lombardi would've enjoyed the game but grumbled quite a bit about all of the passing in it. :)

When are opposing players going to learn it's NOT a good idea to mock the belt? Every time someone does, Rodgers scores 4+ touchdowns and their team gets destroyed. It's especially a bad idea considering you're playing at Lambeau field, against Aaron Rodgers and you're a Bears player. Rodgers owns you.

Drayton's ST coaching could cost us a playoff game or worse the Super Bowl. Change needs to occur now.

We could promote ST assistant Rayna Stewart, terminate Drayton. It might light a fire under some players. It really can't get any worse.

Drayton was an assistant ST coach promoted this year. I don't see promoting another assistant ST to coordinator achieving anything different. Seems that Steward could be part of the coaching issue on ST's as well.

Now that the college season is all but over, is there someone, ANYONE, who appears to be successful in the NCAA that we could bring in now? Doubtful that we could, but we desperately need a shot of new blood from somewhere.

Can someone please set the Packers collective biorhythm clock ahead about an hour. Or at least convince them it is ok to play football in the first quarter.

The special teams.... sigh. Just when you think it can't get any worse.

The backups to the backups are starting on this offensive line now and the team rolls on. Great going Gutey.

They are 4 games up in the division with 4 games to go. Awesome.

The problem is, who can the team get to turn things around this late in the season? And a new coach trying to implement new special teams schemes this late in the year could lead to even more issues. I know, hard to believe, but unfortunately, I think the Packers are going to be forced to stick with this group, including the inadequate coach. Could someone on the team step in to assist Drayton? Because the man is obviously in over his head.

Having a Kicker who can boot the ball out of the end zone would right most of last nights wrongs....Let's start there...that's the easiest thing to fix. Anyone on the team can kick off. It's not too hard to do if you have a good leg. Crosby is not that guy anymore. Crosby did well otherwise all night.

Absolutely Stockholder. I thought he was a good pick. He played pretty well in college but in the pro's, he can't even catch the ball. It seems like he will never be any good and appears to be a wasted draft pick. I never saw that coming when they drafted him.

Good summary. Special teams has been lousy for decades. I don't believe it's a lack of talent, so that leaves coaching as the problem. My stomach hurts every time either team is kicking the ball.

Great win for the Packers and the second half was just total domination.

Unfortunately Special Teams had probably their worst game of the year and that is saying plenty. Not only did they allow a 97 yard punt return for a TD and a few other long returns they muffed a punt which was fortunately nullified by a penalty but they also misplayed an onside kick which forced their defense back on the field.

This cannot be allowed to continue. For those who want MLF to be coach of the year it’s not going to happen with these pathetic ST performances. As the HC he is responsible for the entire team including STs and our STs are not Coach of the Year worthy. They are not even worthy of HS football at this point.

Fortunately the Packers win in spite of their STs so it’s on to Baltimore and GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

Worst game of the year? The special teams gave up 3 touchdowns today. I know two of them didn't count because of technicalities, but man. Three muffed returns, one of which being another onside kick, allowed 4 returns of 30+ yards and 3 of 40+, the 4th longest punt return TD in NFL history and the lone punt return touchdown on the season in the NFL, one kick out of bounds causing a penalty and a drive start at the 40 and then a recovery at the 5 yard line just to go out of bounds and give GB the ball at their own 5. This was one of the all around worst ST performances in GB's history, the only thing they needed to top it all off was a doinked extra point and a blocked punt.

Hello Since '61.
Two things.
First: I wonder if when we lose in the playoffs or the NFCC final or the Super Bowl to the ST will we still blame AR?
Second: While waiting to see the Packers game, I saw Bucs vs Bills. I wonder how we can not be indignant and why nobody talks about how many times the referees decide the games in favor of the Brady Team. Also last night an interference not whistled in favor of the Bills in the last attempt of TD before they impacted for extra time. Immediately after, however, an interference in favor of Evans whistled, really invented by himself. It is sensa to count that during regular play Diggs's shirt stretched incredibly without anyone seeing anything. I forgot .... when King did it in NFCC everyone said he was stupid because the stretched shirts are too obvious a penalty .... and it was just the decisive game of the game ....
Meanwhile, Turner is also gone and I fear that this (trying to be objective) will definitely put an end to our hopes for SB ...
It is always a pleasure to read your comments.
Greetings from Italy

The game has been over for a while and I'm still not breathing thinking the NOT so Special Teams are going to come back out one last time and send us all over the edge. Jesus !!!

Truly, had it not been the field positions (leading to points) given up by STs and the points, I'm thinking the Bears may have only scored 10 to 15 points total.

In the end Beating the Bears into the turf (Owning Them) at home is one of the best feelings there is.

In the spirit of Christmas I'll just say...... It is "A WONDERFUL LIFE George Bailey"

Great to see Lazard with some receptions. Strong hands and good ball skills as a receiver to go along with his height, plus the excellent blocking, makes him a keeper for the Packers.

check that prescription my man.

MVS is an OK depth piece to stretch defenses, however he does not catch contested passes well, does not get separation in tight spaces (not fly patterns) and seems to lack the consistency to deserve consistent snaps a s a number 2 in the NFL.

I was a big mvs fan, I really wanted him to succeed, my eyes have been opened, the experiment is over, he is a 4 or 5, not a 2. He has uses, but an every down Wr is not it.

Collinsworth's and Michael's riff on next-year's Packers team ("Has the bad blood between Rodgers and the FO been reduced? Will Rodgers want to be back? I think so," said Collinsworth, like he was talking about an effing soap opera) was ridiculous in that they never looked at the salary cap. Same when they looked at the Bears, speculating that Chicago would "move on from" a number of highly paid players. Crap announcers, both, ESPECIALLY Collinsworth.

In every area. Return coverage, on side kick coverage, a fumbled punt that luckily didn't count or maybe this whole game ends different. Clueless returners batting the ball out of bounds at the 5 yard line. AN amazing level of futility.

well, can it possibly be any more apparent that it is time for SOMETHING to happen on ST?

It is difficult to bring in a new coach with 4 games left and expect him to make any impacts.

it is true that drayton has failed miserably and needs to find where his talents lie, it is certainly NOT coaching NFL ST.

That said, changes need to be made to triage the woeful ST units of the GBP. Some with personnel and some strategic.

1 - KO returns - do not field the ball if there is any chance of downing it for a touchback. get ANYBODY surehanded and teach them how to handle the ball near the sidelines understanding the rules concerning out of bounds. No more attempts at heroics, PLEASE JUST STOP THE BLEEDING!!!

2 - Kickoffs - it is time to see if JJ Molson can reach the end zone on kickoffs and if so he needs to be activated to do so on each and every kickoff. If crosby can be salvaged for fg, great, if not, it is time for the molson era. Personally, i like mason, but if he cannot be automatic on fg, his time is over. Keeping 2 kickers on the gameday active is a high price to pay, but there needs to be some desperate measures to STOP THE BLEEDING!

3 - Punting-just kick the ball out of bounds each and every time. I dont care about a few yards potentially lost, our coverage unit is PATHETIC! PLEASE JUST STOP THE BLEEDING!!!

4 - punt returns - either put someone absolutely sure handed back there to JUST FAIR CATCH THE DAMN BALL or just do not put a receiver/safety back at all and let the damn ball bounce. No more turnovers. there is no sense trying to advance the ball on punts, our blocking is pathetic and the risk of fielding the ball is far greater than any potential that a return brings. PLEASE JUST STOP THE BLEEDING!!!

5 - fg - see ko above. Crosby seems to have overcome the yips and can be clutch, however at the first sign of yippiness just transition to Molson asap. enough of the "it'll get better" fairy tale stories. Either it gets better right now or it gets changes RIGHT NOW. PLEASE JUST STOP THE BLEEDING!!!

mlf needs to take ownership of this huge hole in the gbp ship and fix it nOW before the playoffs or we will certainly lose to a competitive team due to field position, turnovers and lost points due to our current special teams group.

Another option on punt returns is to put two men back, with one man designated to catch the ball and the other designated to stand in front of him, back to the play, making sure he does just that and available to cover the (seemingly inevitable) muff when it occurs.

Weird game and we got the win. No matter how big a favorite you are, it's always nice to officially post a "W" in the win column.

I cannot believe how atrocious our special teams were. I've been watching the NFL since 1961 and this is arguably the worst special teams performance I've ever seen. Ever. They found a way to screw up almost every phase of their game and even had two possible Chicago touchdowns taken away by penalties and rules.

Swiveling back to positivity, it's nice to know our team is capable of overcoming such mistakes.

Guess what? Rodgers should also be back in the MVP discussion.

It was a high entertainment value game - even though I may be experiencing PTSTD - Post Traumatic Special Teams Disorder.

Not surprised that it took a quarter for Rodgers to get in rhythm. It usually takes older fellows a little longer to get out of bed.

Boy does Collinsworth like Eric Stokes (and rightfully so).

Special teams came very close to losing this game for the Packers. Not only the kick return TD; but the Bears had two TD's taken away on Packers special teams mistakes. The fumble/muff by Rodgers on the punt, and the weird call on the missed recovery by MVS, and the ensuing TD by the Bears. IF those 14 points had been allowed, then the Bears are moving the ball into position for a winning FG against the Packers at the end of the game, rather than frantically trying to get at least two TD's and two two-point conversions to win the game. And I hate the Bears. It definitely seemed the Bears were focusing on beating the Packers ST's in the first half in particular. This has to end. The team needs to spend some money to hire a good ST's coach, before they find themselves out of the playoffs because of poor play by this group. This is something I've been complaining about for years, and nothing changes. Go cheap, hope for the best, then replace one mediocrity with someone else who is clueless, and hope that something changes. There is a term for those who do the same thing repeatedly, and hope for different results.

Ditto on special teams. A new coordinator should be walking in on Monday morning or MLF should personally coach the ST unit.

The worst performance on ST I've ever seen!! No more excuses for such pathetic ST play. Obviously Drayton is not the answer. ST performance of this magnitude will surely result in a quick exit in the playoffs.

Drayton is a good coach he was at the Citadel for awhile , But not right for special teams , the Packers won’t fire him because he’s black because of minority hires .

Don’t mock the belt, don’t ever mock the belt!

I love Robert Quinn! He guaranteed the Packers win on Week 6, and again last night! 😂😂😂

As soon as Quinn mocked the belt, I yelled out to the wife: "Game over. Packers win!"

Science. Law. When you drop an apple, does it fall? When the belt is mocked, do the Packers win?

A win is a win and I am always happy to beat the Bears. But if I ever see Maurice Drayton out and about you best believe I am starting a Fire Drayton chant wherever it is.

First off, a good (not great) win over a weak team.
That said, if we take the first quarter off, we'll be 1 and done come playoff time. Good teams will NOT let you out the hole you dug for yourself.
And it's time for something draconian with STs. I agree with johnblood. Don't even put anybody back there on punt returns. Yeah, I know some will counter with "just find a guy to fair catch the ball." We don't have anybody who can fair catch the ball! And on kickoffs, teams are PURPOSELY gonna kick the ball to the 2 or 3 yard line because they KNOW we can't return in it to the 25. I guess we hope the ball caroms into the end zone.
Look, I know the Packers never fire anybody mid-season, but Drayton's gotta go. It's WAY past time.

Time for a TYLER ERVIN return for rest of season. I believe he is unemployed unless I am mistaken!
